:00:16. > :00:18.Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers
:00:19. > :00:22.With me are the parliamentary journalist Tony Grew
:00:23. > :00:25.and the broadcaster and journalist, Sean Dilley.
:00:26. > :00:28.Tomorrow's front pages, starting with:
:00:29. > :00:33.Actress Carrie Fisher's death at the age of 60
:00:34. > :00:36.is the main focus of the Independent.
:00:37. > :00:40.The paper also claims to have seen plans to topple Unite union's chief
:00:41. > :00:45.Carrie Fisher also makes headlines in the Mail -
:00:46. > :00:47.as does new analysis from researchers
:00:48. > :00:50.that 80% of the middle-aged population
:00:51. > :00:55.The Express also features the new health figures,
:00:56. > :00:59.reporting that diabetes among the middle-aged has doubled.
:01:00. > :01:03.The Daily Telegraph claims that the Armed Forces face another
:01:04. > :01:06.round of cuts, partly due to the fall in the pound.
:01:07. > :01:11.It also notes transport disruption due to cold weather across the UK.
:01:12. > :01:14.The Times reports that the government will reform charges
:01:15. > :01:17.for electric car charging, to combat the steep costs that
:01:18. > :01:23.The paper also carries an image of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia.
:01:24. > :01:27.And finally, the Sun also pays tribute to Carrie Fisher,
:01:28. > :01:30.and reports that George Michael will be buried in his
:01:31. > :01:49.Carrie Fisher, whose picture is pretty much on every front pageant
:01:50. > :01:56.not surprisingly. An iconic figure for many fans of the movies and
:01:57. > :02:00.especially the Star Wars movies. She will be most remembered as Princess
:02:01. > :02:05.Leia did not need a hero to rescue her. She was one of the first
:02:06. > :02:13.Hollywood stars to speak openly about her struggles with addiction.
:02:14. > :02:19.She spoke about her experience of going through rehab so for many
:02:20. > :02:31.people she will be remembered as a feminist icon but also a mental
:02:32. > :02:36.health figure. Very fond treatment of the death of someone who is much
:02:37. > :02:43.loved across the world. Relatively young, like George Michael, who was
:02:44. > :02:50.53, she was 60. I wonder whether when we hear these stories, yes,
:02:51. > :02:58.they are iconic, it will be impactful too fans, the Star Wars
:02:59. > :03:06.fans, to George Michael music fans. But the fact, 53, 60, I think people
:03:07. > :03:16.find these less explicable than... You are talking about people who of
:03:17. > :03:24.a horrible year for celebrities. What they had in common was that
:03:25. > :03:29.creative but troubled souls, in a way? And the fact they spoke
:03:30. > :03:34.publicly about that no doubt would have helped many people come to
:03:35. > :03:39.terms with their own struggle. It is a bit of a cliche but at the time
:03:40. > :03:44.when those two were doing it, it was something that was not done. Those
:03:45. > :03:50.with things he did not talk about. Carrie Fisher, in particular, just
:03:51. > :03:56.her spirit, her ability to come he knew to be a funny and controversial
:03:57. > :04:04.and interesting person. The complete opposite of the bland movie star.
:04:05. > :04:09.With George Michael as well. It was lovely to find out about the
:04:10. > :04:16.altruistic acts that he was doing, charities, and money he gave away.
:04:17. > :04:21.It is really interesting, you kind of learned something behind the
:04:22. > :04:28.public face, behind the trouble and I suspect that will be the case with
:04:29. > :04:33.Carrie Fisher as well. Personal stories that we may think, rather
:04:34. > :04:40.guiltily that are not experience. The main front-page headline here, a
:04:41. > :04:49.crackdown on rip-off charges for electric cars. One of the government
:04:50. > :04:57.big push us is to get people to drive more low emission cars by
:04:58. > :05:02.2020. But there is a disparity in terms of charging and the rules
:05:03. > :05:09.about charging electric cars around the house. 90% are charged at home
:05:10. > :05:20.but the problems people have is when they are further away from home,
:05:21. > :05:28.some of these charges could reach 7.50 and find this fascinating, at
:05:29. > :05:35.least 93 pricing accommodations are used in a different charge polls are
:05:36. > :05:39.round the country. I loved the story because of their recognising
:05:40. > :05:44.something stopped the target was to have 9% of low emission vehicles by
:05:45. > :05:51.2020 now reports suggest that the way we are going it will be 7% and,
:05:52. > :05:56.listen, statistics and figures aside, wouldn't it be brilliant as
:05:57. > :06:04.well as getting capital cities with congestion charges, getting
:06:05. > :06:08.incentive to get fuel free. A name for where you are worried about
:06:09. > :06:17.whether the car is going to get from point now to point B it is called
:06:18. > :06:23.range anxiety. Not enough charging point is one of the issues? It says
:06:24. > :06:33.there are 11,000 public charging points in Britain... Which isn't
:06:34. > :06:39.very many... There are actually significantly more than petrol
:06:40. > :06:47.stations are relatively. It takes longer to charge a car... But those
:06:48. > :06:53.charging point would not be surprised if they are concentrated
:06:54. > :06:58.in the city. If you are in the countryside, you could find a sock
:06:59. > :07:02.in difficulty. Frankly, my view is the government does not want to
:07:03. > :07:09.invest in the infrastructure and spend money on it. They will have to
:07:10. > :07:17.because with all sorts of insurance is, reducing emissions, we are going
:07:18. > :07:20.to see those generous purchase fees. We are going to have to see that
:07:21. > :07:25.because otherwise these diesel vehicles are going to carry on being
:07:26. > :07:30.bought and government will have to Shell out money for not being as
:07:31. > :07:37.green. The Telegraph have got the Armed Forces facing new cuts and
:07:38. > :07:40.apparently because of the new pound? They have been under pressure right
:07:41. > :07:45.from 2010 when the coalition government came into force.
:07:46. > :07:52.Obviously several things have changed since then... Brexit. The
:07:53. > :07:56.pound is much weaker and a lot of American equipment now costs a lot
:07:57. > :08:02.more money. There are other pressures. The government came up
:08:03. > :08:05.and said that we are funding the Armed Forces properly or the next
:08:06. > :08:11.ten years. When you look behind the figures is what they have done is
:08:12. > :08:17.taken out pension commitments, US peacekeeping costs and they have
:08:18. > :08:22.dumped it elsewhere. It was creative counting by the government. The
:08:23. > :08:26.Armed Forces would told they were getting more money but they were
:08:27. > :08:31.hidden extras. And now the settlement given by the government
:08:32. > :08:36.in the STS are, means that last year and this year they have not been
:08:37. > :08:40.getting the money they were promised and they may be in financial
:08:41. > :08:45.squeeze. Military costs money and they do not feel they are getting
:08:46. > :08:52.the money. They are saying invest more and protect the nation. The
:08:53. > :09:00.Telegraph have a story about potential peers, Dippel nominated
:09:01. > :09:06.for a peerage -- people, should be given an interview to test their
:09:07. > :09:12.suitability. Literally hundreds of people being nominated, be they do
:09:13. > :09:17.know is, aides to senior politicians, almost a little piece
:09:18. > :09:25.of living offers a reward. Remember cash for honours stop Theresa May's
:09:26. > :09:29.ethics adviser... I think that is what they are being called... Is
:09:30. > :09:34.saying we need to have a seat down, a jolly good chat, a cup of coffee
:09:35. > :09:41.and work out whether they are suitable. Do you want the title or
:09:42. > :09:45.would you be better off buying one of those titles of the Internet.
:09:46. > :09:49.Wrinkly, if somebody is donating a lot of money to a political party
:09:50. > :09:54.and in return they are receiving a peerage, I would suggest it is
:09:55. > :10:00.tantamount to little more than bribery. What about the unions and
:10:01. > :10:08.the Labour Party? State funding. There are not any other options.
:10:09. > :10:12.There are. Since there is not the electoral system which many people
:10:13. > :10:18.criticise any way, ultimately, it should erratically be the upper
:10:19. > :10:24.house of the UK Parliament... Parliament is... Lets face it back
:10:25. > :10:28.on King Charles I who lost his head therefore the Queen has lost her
:10:29. > :10:31.right to have a say. The House of Lords is more or less having to
:10:32. > :10:35.rubberstamp things because they are stuck in there in the first place.
:10:36. > :10:40.They go through a screen each process are ready. But if you want
:10:41. > :10:46.to sit and have a chat with them, they have to have some understanding
:10:47. > :10:55.of the Constitution. Look, we need to separate honours from
:10:56. > :11:02.legislation. What we do it like the state... That is too complicated.
:11:03. > :11:08.And we do not have time to discuss that. The Daily Mail, health curse
:11:09. > :11:15.of the middle-aged. Tony, I not looking at you. You are not even
:11:16. > :11:20.middle-aged, I know that. 80%, they say are overweight, lazy or drink
:11:21. > :11:26.too much. Thank you for that, by the way. These are shocking figures. 80%
:11:27. > :11:37.of people in your age group... Thank you for that! 77% of men are
:11:38. > :11:44.overweight. That alone is a public health crisis coming down the track
:11:45. > :11:51.for the NHS. Then in diabetes. Only 13% of men and with 1% of women are
:11:52. > :11:56.normal weight, physically active and do not treat too much. The problem
:11:57. > :12:02.is these warnings have been issued before and no one has taken notice.
:12:03. > :12:06.These people will end up having extremely unhealthy periods in the
:12:07. > :12:13.latter part of their lives. It is a concern for the NHS, social care
:12:14. > :12:16.cost an across-the-board. Seeing headlines like these, we have seen
:12:17. > :12:23.them, but no one seems to be listening. Again, frankly, if you
:12:24. > :12:26.look at all the headlines, what is interesting about the paper review
:12:27. > :12:32.tonight is that all the papers have gone on the same story including
:12:33. > :12:37.this public health story. This is not new news. There is a quiet
:12:38. > :12:43.period where it is likely to get splashed on the papers. The cost of
:12:44. > :12:50.the NHS, the future of the nation but ultimately what do you do to
:12:51. > :12:55.persuade people. Do you say it is the job of the state to enforce that
:12:56. > :13:02.on people which is a little bit 1984... Sorry, if you are going to
:13:03. > :13:05.have a health service... It is another debate we cannot get into
:13:06. > :13:12.because we only have one minute for the last story in the financial
:13:13. > :13:20.time, high it executive pay and good performance. Apparently, the link is
:13:21. > :13:25.negligible? Is that a surprise? No. The idea of performance related pay
:13:26. > :13:30.within big organisations as was be difficult to prove. They have strove
:13:31. > :13:35.not to try to make that direct correlation. Basically, it says that
:13:36. > :13:44.over a decade, pay rises have gone up 80% for CEOs but 1% in terms of
:13:45. > :13:49.performance. It seems we are not getting a good return for the
:13:50. > :13:53.investment. I think I would say we are in a more competitive
:13:54. > :13:58.environment now and if you pay peanuts... I do not have the finish
:13:59. > :14:07.that sentence. You cannot underpay people. The market rate has gone up.
:14:08. > :14:13.A bag of sugar has cost a lot more. My view is that if you're going to
:14:14. > :14:18.raise the pay, you should also be increasing the pay for people that
:14:19. > :14:25.actually work in the company. We have run out of time. Health issues,
:14:26. > :14:35.constitutional issues... We got through the papers. Thank you. That
:14:36. > :14:37.is it from the papers. Many thanks for joining us. That is all for us.
