:00:14. > :00:16.Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be
:00:17. > :00:19.With me are Caroline Frost, entertainment editor
:00:20. > :00:22.at the Huffington Post, and Robert Fox, defence editor
:00:23. > :00:31.I hope you have had a restful yuletide. Nice to see you back here.
:00:32. > :00:32.Tomorrow's front pages, starting with:
:00:33. > :00:35.The Telegraph headlines the government's plan to build
:00:36. > :00:38.new garden towns in England to try to alleviate the housing crisis.
:00:39. > :00:41.It also reports on the hunt for the gunman who attacked
:00:42. > :00:46.The Daily Mail chooses to focus on the Queen
:00:47. > :00:48.missing church due to illness, saying she has not been seen
:00:49. > :00:53.The Guardian reports the demand from a top GP
:00:54. > :00:56.that the government must drop its plans to guarantee access
:00:57. > :01:01.to doctors at weekends or risk cuts to weekday services.
:01:02. > :01:03.Thousands of patients are waiting for hip and knee operations,
:01:04. > :01:08.It also quotes Princess Anne, who insists the Queen's
:01:09. > :01:13.The i bears the headline "smiling killer" -
:01:14. > :01:17.referring to the gunman who killed 39 people in Istanbul.
:01:18. > :01:19.And the Times also headlines the attack,
:01:20. > :01:21.reporting that the Islamic State - who claimed responsibility
:01:22. > :01:24.for the killings - has pledged a campaign of terror.
:01:25. > :01:26.Theresa May overhauling the honours system also makes
:01:27. > :01:31.And finally, the Mirror leads on the latest
:01:32. > :01:47.We will start with the ongoing hunt for the gunman who struck the
:01:48. > :01:52.Istanbul nightclub last night. We were reporting it around this time,
:01:53. > :01:59.two o'clock in the morning local time, last night. Smiling killer, it
:02:00. > :02:03.says. Shot victims one by one as they partied with friends. Hundreds
:02:04. > :02:08.and hundreds of people were in this particular nightclub. A massively
:02:09. > :02:11.popular place in Istanbul and well-known across Turkey. Very
:02:12. > :02:16.cosmopolitan as well. It was deliberately targeted. He was
:02:17. > :02:21.prepared all right. He was in some psychological state. The Express, on
:02:22. > :02:25.one of its inside pages, say this man is now believed to have been a
:02:26. > :02:31.Turkmen, possibly from Chechnya or eastern Afghanistan, or
:02:32. > :02:36.Turkmenistan, one of the most enclosed places. They are coming
:02:37. > :02:43.from a lot of different places now. What the Times is referring to, I
:02:44. > :02:51.think, is the very high profile spokesperson and operational
:02:52. > :02:54.manager, was killed at the end of September. His successor was any
:02:55. > :02:59.named three weeks ago and started saying the same things to which the
:03:00. > :03:04.Times is referring, namely lone wolves, go out and attack and do
:03:05. > :03:09.things on your own and do your own thing. As the Times gathers, this is
:03:10. > :03:13.the warning from UK security chiefs, that they are very worried this is
:03:14. > :03:19.the message that has gone out before. Use vehicles to drive into
:03:20. > :03:27.crowds. Don't bother with firearms if you are not particularly good.
:03:28. > :03:32.Use kidnap and cold still. As you mentioned it, the new-found campaign
:03:33. > :03:36.of terror after massacre. So many cities, London amongst them, had
:03:37. > :03:39.extra security measures, especially concrete barriers, to try to avert
:03:40. > :03:44.the kind of lorry attack you mentioned. We saw that only a few
:03:45. > :03:49.days before Christmas. On the one hand, you have this Western divines.
:03:50. > :03:53.We will continue as usual. All of the things we hold dear to our
:03:54. > :03:57.culture and communities, going out and revelling and having fun and
:03:58. > :04:02.celebrating Christmas -- western divines. These things have never
:04:03. > :04:06.been more important. But it is now accompanied by this very transparent
:04:07. > :04:11.ring of steel that we are at risk every time we do that. It is a
:04:12. > :04:15.double message and very complex. What scares me is this recruitment
:04:16. > :04:19.of lone wolves and the idea that in the past, we have had people trained
:04:20. > :04:24.in camps and allsorts of things with al-Qaeda. This is just if you are
:04:25. > :04:29.out there and believe what we believe, do your worst. It doesn't
:04:30. > :04:34.need the Internet, it doesn't need training, it doesn't need arms, it
:04:35. > :04:37.just needs a message. To me, that is the most frightening aspect.
:04:38. > :04:42.President Erdogan again saying he will root out terrorism, but he has
:04:43. > :04:48.that porous border. Four major attacks in four weeks. Very
:04:49. > :04:53.difficult for him. He has been punished. The propaganda runs that
:04:54. > :04:59.he has been punished for creating up to Russia. But he needs them for all
:05:00. > :05:03.kinds of things, especially gas supplies -- cosying. And getting
:05:04. > :05:07.Russian tourists on the beaches, which are being vacated by Western
:05:08. > :05:14.tourists. Let's book and a couple of health stories. Top GP urges them to
:05:15. > :05:22.drop the seven-day plan. If you open surgeries at the weekend, you can't
:05:23. > :05:27.have it all week. We remember David Cameron with great fanfare, this
:05:28. > :05:30.would be the 24/7 NHS. At that time there were rumblings about who would
:05:31. > :05:36.pay for it and what resources would be thin on the ground. So it has
:05:37. > :05:43.proved. This is a very senior GP. This is Britain's top GP sagging
:05:44. > :05:47.there is not the need for it, this is an empty promise -- saying.
:05:48. > :05:52.Nobody wants to book a GP appointment on a Sunday afternoon.
:05:53. > :05:56.Equally, where are the resources? Something will have to give. She
:05:57. > :06:00.says herself, there is no point filling a surgery with medical
:06:01. > :06:03.knowledge and experience if on Sunday afternoon, where is the
:06:04. > :06:08.person on Tuesday morning? These gaps will be showing. They talk
:06:09. > :06:12.about ringing people in from abroad. She says it is not sustainable. She
:06:13. > :06:17.was warning people would have to wait up to four weeks for an
:06:18. > :06:20.appointment -- bringing. Very interesting that one of the junior
:06:21. > :06:28.ministers of the outgoing coalition, the Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb,
:06:29. > :06:32.was saying absolutely but the GP seven days a week is a superficially
:06:33. > :06:38.attractive gimmick. The emperor has no clothes. It really was an
:06:39. > :06:43.extraordinary piece of typical David Cameron flannel for propaganda. That
:06:44. > :06:47.at the other help story on the Daily Express. Thousands face hip
:06:48. > :06:52.operation agony because they will have a long wait. But more and more
:06:53. > :06:59.people will need this kind of operation. We are all getting older.
:07:00. > :07:05.I am over 70 now. No! It is the new 45 for me. We have to go on
:07:06. > :07:08.reviewing the papers. It is longevity. We have to live with
:07:09. > :07:13.that. There are other stories in the paper about old-age healthcare. They
:07:14. > :07:19.are bringing people back from Benidorm who are experts having a
:07:20. > :07:24.hard time and come in and do shifts in old people's care homes on very
:07:25. > :07:29.little qualifications. But the cost of ageing is enormous. We are really
:07:30. > :07:34.just at the beginning of it. It will be quite normal for people to move
:07:35. > :07:40.into their 90s. Look at the Paul Quinn, or whoever it is, the amount
:07:41. > :07:49.of telegraphs they will have to send to centenarians is enormous. -- poor
:07:50. > :07:54.Queen. It is not that they are scarce, but demand is huge. Look at
:07:55. > :07:58.the Times. Theresa May blames David Cameron the controversial honours
:07:59. > :08:02.list. Every year, some of the names on the wrist raise eyebrows, the
:08:03. > :08:09.busier, the Prime Minister says this is not done to me -- list. Do you
:08:10. > :08:12.believe her? I don't know. We have to think some of the Home Office
:08:13. > :08:16.appointment is surely would have come under her watch in her previous
:08:17. > :08:21.status. However, it is interesting. She says it is all about... It ties
:08:22. > :08:25.into her just about managing campaign. She said she wants to
:08:26. > :08:32.prioritise people from very social mobility and allow the young to
:08:33. > :08:38.realise their potential. One or two will be filled by Victoria Beckham,
:08:39. > :08:41.I'm sure. But this year we have a an influx of sport personalities.
:08:42. > :08:45.People will say why should a sportsman be given a gong in
:08:46. > :08:53.addition to a medal he has already won? Why should people be given
:08:54. > :08:57.gongs having being paid for a job well done. Or not even well done
:08:58. > :09:01.according to some reporters. I think that is an interesting part of the
:09:02. > :09:06.story. This is obviously based on a bleak. The times are having a go at
:09:07. > :09:15.the Department of overseas aid. They say why is the Department
:09:16. > :09:21.Undersecretary getting a knighthood? I think we will hear a lot to this
:09:22. > :09:27.year about the 12 billion budget from the overseas aid agency, and it
:09:28. > :09:31.is not being spent in the right places because the vultures are
:09:32. > :09:36.circling. Everything from defence to health want a bit of that action.
:09:37. > :09:43.They are trying to do that. So this very pious aim to spend 0.7% of GDP
:09:44. > :09:49.in line with the United Nations on overseas aid, I think, the head
:09:50. > :09:55.prefect will say no to that before the year is out. We have done the
:09:56. > :10:00.times. Let's look at the back of the Telegraph. New towns to ease housing
:10:01. > :10:04.shortage. We have been talking for years about our inability to provide
:10:05. > :10:09.the housing supply that we need. But here is an idea, villages of up to
:10:10. > :10:12.10,000 homes. That is an almighty big village that could be created in
:10:13. > :10:19.certain parts of the country where people most want to be. That would
:10:20. > :10:22.be a city. I did not realise a village could be that large.
:10:23. > :10:26.Controversial if you already a big nose places and I want to see it
:10:27. > :10:33.extended any further. Especially if it is greenbelt land, is priced in
:10:34. > :10:37.the heart of the great pastures -- live in those places. In the face of
:10:38. > :10:43.Brexit and terrorism fears, Donald Trump about to take his role in the
:10:44. > :10:49.White House, the idea of new towns, I just think this is not something
:10:50. > :10:53.people will benefit from any time soon. This reads to me like good
:10:54. > :10:57.news for generate the first. They have to find parliamentary time to
:10:58. > :11:01.get it through. I slightly disagree with Caroline here. It is people in
:11:02. > :11:04.the inner cities, the really big cities like Manchester and
:11:05. > :11:09.Liverpool, and people coming out of studies. They are looking for a
:11:10. > :11:17.first start, even if it is only a modest flat. That is what they want.
:11:18. > :11:20.I don't think those young people want to go and live in semi-
:11:21. > :11:29.suburbanite was semi rural England. Dogs of Elsbury and Harlow. Where
:11:30. > :11:36.are the jobs to draw them in? There is a bit of a disconnect. I do think
:11:37. > :11:40.it is part of the Theresa May setting the stalled just in case we
:11:41. > :11:45.may have to have an early election. We should talk about that more. But
:11:46. > :11:56.we can't. Let's talk about the Royals. The Daily Mail, getting
:11:57. > :12:03.better, ma'am. She has missed church again and not been seen for weeks.
:12:04. > :12:08.24 days. I'm counting. She is the lady who said long ago she has to be
:12:09. > :12:12.seen to be believed. She knows about the importance of an appearance.
:12:13. > :12:17.Often in a beautiful blog colour and a big hat. Purpose of very said
:12:18. > :12:22.young children -- said young children can see her from afar. I'm
:12:23. > :12:26.sure she would not have wanted to missed church on Christmas Day, and
:12:27. > :12:32.again on New Year's day. She has a cold. This is the official line. Her
:12:33. > :12:37.daughter, Princess Anne, says she is better. She is in IT award lady who
:12:38. > :12:42.has an iron constitution and has enjoyed that all her life -- I am
:12:43. > :12:46.lady. She will be taking all sorts of medical opinions and advice on
:12:47. > :12:52.how to get rid of this hacking cough as soon as possible. The good news
:12:53. > :12:59.is that Prince Philip is back in action and bringing our way. 95
:13:00. > :13:08.years old. Hats off. 95! You are just a mere 70. Not a hip operation
:13:09. > :13:11.inside. Soldiering on without the Queen as you expect him to. But
:13:12. > :13:15.clearly disappointment to those hoping to catch a glimpse of the
:13:16. > :13:17.Queen. But anyone who was a supporter was obvious the
:13:18. > :13:23.understanding of why she was not there. Let us go on to page four of
:13:24. > :13:27.the Express. I love this one. Outdoor skills are lacking in the
:13:28. > :13:31.young. Young people are clueless when it comes to basic survival
:13:32. > :13:36.skills such as tying a knot or starting a fire up from scratch.
:13:37. > :13:40.This is where I wish I had brought a length of rope in so Caroline and
:13:41. > :13:49.Robert can show us a half page or a shipshape. There are so many
:13:50. > :13:54.programmes these day is like like Bear Grylls showing us how to
:13:55. > :13:58.survive in extreme conditions. They should have picked something up.
:13:59. > :14:10.They mostly appear on young teenager's apps, don't they? This is
:14:11. > :14:14.aiming at the app potato face. We all know how to make a fire outside.
:14:15. > :14:19.We rub to Boy Scouts together. LAUGHTER
:14:20. > :14:25.Young but decides you see people struggling. Pupils going out with
:14:26. > :14:31.picnics. Everything has been done by a certain delivery van or whatever
:14:32. > :14:37.-- people. You used it cook for half the world. Did you have an outdoorsy
:14:38. > :14:41.childhood? I was once lowered to a harbour and did an outward bound
:14:42. > :14:45.horrendous exhibition at age 12 something. We did all right. We tied
:14:46. > :14:49.knots and started fires and waded through mud. The final frontier was
:14:50. > :14:55.that each member of the team had to eat an entire pickled onion. This
:14:56. > :15:00.was the fallout. This was where everything collapsed. A wild pickled
:15:01. > :15:03.onion? I do agree. If you walked out on the street, the average
:15:04. > :15:07.12-year-old could tell you how to hack into the Pentagon but asked
:15:08. > :15:12.them, come the Apocalypse, which one will be standing, it will be this
:15:13. > :15:18.man. I with Robert. You can type not for all of us. You will be carrying
:15:19. > :15:25.the canteen. -- tying knots. That is it for the papers this hour. Nice to
:15:26. > :15:28.see you both. Happy New Year. Coming up next, it is Reporters.
