:00:15. > :00:17.Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the The Papers will be

:00:18. > :00:21.With me are the broadcaster Penny Smith and Caroline Wheeler,

:00:22. > :00:28.political editor of the Sunday Express.

:00:29. > :00:31.Let's take a look at some of the front pages.

:00:32. > :00:34.The front page of the Sunday Telegraph leads on the government's

:00:35. > :00:35.?60 million investigation into historic allegations

:00:36. > :00:39.The paper says MPs are due to report that it's unfit for purpose.

:00:40. > :00:43.The Observer reports that Theresa May's government

:00:44. > :00:46.is going to make a major shift in housing policy - away from trying

:00:47. > :00:49.to promote home ownership - and towards better deals for people

:00:50. > :00:52.Donald Trump appears to have found a new ally

:00:53. > :01:02.in the shape of the former Archbishop of Canterbury.

:01:03. > :01:05.George Carey is quoted in the Sunday Express as hitting out

:01:06. > :01:07.at the "hysterical" overreactions of the president's critics.

:01:08. > :01:09.The Sunday Times has investigated what it calls "deficiencies"

:01:10. > :01:11.in defence procurement, including ships so noisy,

:01:12. > :01:14.Russian submarines can hear them 100 miles away.

:01:15. > :01:16.The photograph is of England player Ben Te'o celebrating victory over

:01:17. > :01:28.Finally, the Mail on Sunday headlines that former Ukip leader

:01:29. > :01:32.Nigel Farage is sharing a ?4 million in West London with his friend

:01:33. > :01:38.with his friend Laure Ferrari, a French politician.

:01:39. > :01:43.Let's begin with the papers themselves and the ones we thought

:01:44. > :01:47.we would give people a bit of a rest from Trump to start with. We can't

:01:48. > :01:51.avoid the man but let's start with the Observer story about the Tories

:01:52. > :01:55.breaking with Thatcher's home policy. This is interesting, backing

:01:56. > :02:00.renting. This is something I've been talking about for some time. In

:02:01. > :02:04.other countries, you have a more mobile workforce if you have people

:02:05. > :02:07.who rent, for example. This is finally an acknowledgement by the

:02:08. > :02:10.government that is saying, for too many people, they will never own

:02:11. > :02:14.their own homes. It is now so far out of reach that they never will so

:02:15. > :02:19.let's try to sort out these ridiculous rents, banned some of the

:02:20. > :02:22.fees that are charged by letting agents, try to sort out rogue

:02:23. > :02:26.landlords and make it so that renting is not a terrible option, so

:02:27. > :02:31.that you don't have to spend your entire life trying to get on the

:02:32. > :02:36.tiny, possibly broken first rung of the housing ladder. Caroline, quite

:02:37. > :02:41.a switch when you think of conservative values and policies our

:02:42. > :02:44.many years, certainly back to Thatcher. Exactly, and it's

:02:45. > :02:48.interesting they cite that you because if you think back, this is

:02:49. > :02:52.also Theresa May ripping up David Cameron's housing policy as well. We

:02:53. > :02:56.can all think back to the Conservative Party conference, his

:02:57. > :02:59.last conference speech in 2015, and he said to them that we should

:03:00. > :03:04.switch from generation rent to generation buying Ulster this is a

:03:05. > :03:10.complete reversal of this. Basically acknowledging that this policy was

:03:11. > :03:14.putting low income families, and denying them access to decent

:03:15. > :03:17.quality homes at the expense of basically ploughing all this money

:03:18. > :03:21.into this unattainable dream of people owning their own home. And

:03:22. > :03:25.then trying to make it so that instead of having affordable housing

:03:26. > :03:30.for sale, that it's affordable housing to rent. And this is part of

:03:31. > :03:33.the housing white Paper. It is only part of the announcement because

:03:34. > :03:37.that is how Downing Street rolls, we will get a taste of this and that on

:03:38. > :03:40.Tuesday, we will get more. It is likely she will also make some

:03:41. > :03:44.announcements about building more homes because of course, there is a

:03:45. > :03:49.housing such -- housing shortage but this is a taster of the direction of

:03:50. > :03:52.travel. On we go, the Sunday express, Caroline, great to have you

:03:53. > :03:58.because your name is on the story. It is. George Carey, the former

:03:59. > :04:02.Archbishop of Canterbury, has blasted Trump's predicts. Is he in

:04:03. > :04:05.favour of Donald Trump? He's not saying that he thinks everything

:04:06. > :04:09.Donald Trump does is brilliant, he's quite cautious in his language but

:04:10. > :04:12.he does say there has been an overreaction and he is basically

:04:13. > :04:16.saying that as we have had today in London, thousands of protesters on

:04:17. > :04:21.the streets, he has said that you have not seen that level of hysteria

:04:22. > :04:26.around other politicians that he would say were far worse, like

:04:27. > :04:29.Robert Mugabe, or President Assad. But one of the interesting things I

:04:30. > :04:33.find from his particular intervention is he welcomes one

:04:34. > :04:38.particular proposal that Donald Trump has introduced, which is his

:04:39. > :04:41.refugee policy, where he is actively deciding to put Christians or

:04:42. > :04:44.persecuted Christian minorities at the front of the queue. This is a

:04:45. > :04:49.story we particularly have looked at on numerous occasions, in fact, with

:04:50. > :04:53.George Carey as well, in that there has been this tendency, in Britain

:04:54. > :04:57.as well and Prince Charles has spoken about this, that Christian

:04:58. > :05:00.minorities are pushed to the back of the queue and actually discriminated

:05:01. > :05:05.against in terms of when asylum seekers are being brought into the

:05:06. > :05:10.country. Terrible things happening, whole communities being obliterated.

:05:11. > :05:16.Absolutely. It is intriguing, Penny, that here is a man coming up with

:05:17. > :05:21.this kind of... The Archbishop of Canterbury, a former one, anyway,

:05:22. > :05:28.surprising? I suppose his point is that he's there, he's been elected

:05:29. > :05:30.and sworn in. Let's get on with it. He's democratically elected, no

:05:31. > :05:34.matter what you think about this alternative truth or anything else

:05:35. > :05:37.but the point is, he is there and we have to get on with it. I noticed

:05:38. > :05:41.some other things you have inside the paper which are rather fun, that

:05:42. > :05:44.Donald Trump is going to give the Queen, if he comes on the famous

:05:45. > :05:53.state visit, he will give her a saddle. She will like that, a

:05:54. > :05:55.horsewoman. Or Western saddle for the Queen and also the grandchildren

:05:56. > :05:58.but not just a saddle but one which is engraved with his seal and hers

:05:59. > :06:01.as a symbol of the special relationship. I tell you what, we

:06:02. > :06:04.will see at first because he will be tweeting direct from the palace. To

:06:05. > :06:08.be honest, that is what they are concerned about, from what the royal

:06:09. > :06:12.editor says. There are concerns about private conversations being

:06:13. > :06:15.tweeted and so forth and as you can imagine, the monarchy does not take

:06:16. > :06:20.kindly to that sort of thing. I can do is to imagine him taking a selfie

:06:21. > :06:26.in the state carriage! -- just imagine him. Don't rule anything

:06:27. > :06:30.out. It will definitely happen. It might. The mail on Sunday has a

:06:31. > :06:38.story about Nigel Farage's live in Lady and the ?400,000 Ukip... And

:06:39. > :06:42.all sort of things but really it's about the French politician, Laure

:06:43. > :06:46.Ferrari, sharing a property with Nigel Farage. What interests me

:06:47. > :06:50.about this, whatever people say about these things, the fascination

:06:51. > :06:54.with Nigel Farage is a bit like the one with Trump. It is odd, we were

:06:55. > :07:00.chatting and we were saying that when you consider how the party,

:07:01. > :07:06.Ukip, he is a former Ukip leader, he does not lead a party. They've only

:07:07. > :07:12.got one MP. Years, and yet, and how much he gets mentioned is huge. --

:07:13. > :07:16.yes, and yet. There are many quotes and I'm going to put my glasses on

:07:17. > :07:22.because we need to make this absolutely right. Mr Farage last

:07:23. > :07:27.night concerned that Miss Ferrari,... You are really going for

:07:28. > :07:31.this! I can just about understand you. She has been living in his

:07:32. > :07:34.Chelsea house but he said it was ridiculous to suggest they were

:07:35. > :07:38.having an affair. He said he knew her well and was helping her out

:07:39. > :07:41.with, to say. They met a decade ago when she was a waitress and he got a

:07:42. > :07:46.job in the European Parliament. She is the head of a think tank accused

:07:47. > :07:51.of breaking rules by diverging public money to Ukip and Mr Farage

:07:52. > :07:56.was quick to say they were allegations, and we should make this

:07:57. > :07:59.clear. These are allegations. He denies it absolutely. He denied

:08:00. > :08:03.everything and says he's not answering ludicrous questions like

:08:04. > :08:06.as he ever had dinner with her. She is someone he has worked with and

:08:07. > :08:10.known for a long time and she wanted summer to stay for a week that would

:08:11. > :08:14.not cost any money. He said it was a working Russian ship, inflated how

:08:15. > :08:18.you will. There is this fascination with him, isn't there, as a

:08:19. > :08:22.political editor, you must have to cover the story a lot. We do and

:08:23. > :08:31.there is this fascination and one wonders whether it is because some

:08:32. > :08:33.of the other politicians have slightly colourful lives and

:08:34. > :08:36.certainly when I was out with Nigel Farage in Washington. When you say

:08:37. > :08:38.you were out with him? You mean you were accompanying him. I went to

:08:39. > :08:42.cover the inauguration and was with Nigel Farage and his entourage for

:08:43. > :08:46.quite a considerable number of days while we were out there and attended

:08:47. > :08:51.his party at the top of the beautiful hotel which overlooks the

:08:52. > :08:54.White House. But he is a figure which is not only fascinating to us

:08:55. > :08:58.on this side of the pond but over there but in a very different way.

:08:59. > :09:01.Over there, they treat him like a rock star, they want to talk to him

:09:02. > :09:06.whereas over here, I think his relationship with the public is very

:09:07. > :09:12.divided. And they know his name? They know him as Mr Brexit and much

:09:13. > :09:16.more than Theresa May. Let's move on because we don't have a lot of time.

:09:17. > :09:23.The Sunday Times front page, a deadly serious story, gaps in UK

:09:24. > :09:27.defences. Tell us what the gaps are that have been identified. They have

:09:28. > :09:29.put together a precis of some of these astonishing bungles that are

:09:30. > :09:34.happening with our defence equipment. One of which suggests

:09:35. > :09:38.that there are warships that so noisy, Russian submarines can hear

:09:39. > :09:42.them from 100 miles away. Drones costing ?1 billion that have not

:09:43. > :09:46.entered front-line service for 12 years after being ordered and light

:09:47. > :09:50.tanks that are too big to fit into the troop support aircraft. This is

:09:51. > :09:55.a litany of things that has gone on with our equipment. There are others

:09:56. > :09:58.we can allude to, before, do you remember the aircraft carrier that

:09:59. > :10:03.was commissioned for absolutely tonnes of money and then it turned

:10:04. > :10:07.out it could never have aircraft? Even the Trident missile misfiring.

:10:08. > :10:12.I was going to say that. But they say that is what happens. The fact

:10:13. > :10:16.this destroyer sounds like a box of spammers under water and you can

:10:17. > :10:20.hear it from 100 miles away, you just... It does beggar belief. Do we

:10:21. > :10:26.know how they are getting the information? Rear Admiral Chris

:10:27. > :10:31.Parry, a former MoD director of operations. Someone to listen to,

:10:32. > :10:35.then. He is saying that it is bundling. He says the Navy

:10:36. > :10:37.mistakenly overlooked suppressing noise of the destroyed after the

:10:38. > :10:42.Cold War ended because the threat from Russian submarines had

:10:43. > :10:45.diminished. And it is important, this kind of story because we are at

:10:46. > :10:48.the moment in this kind of untested time with the new president and a

:10:49. > :10:51.new relationship with the president and the Kremlin and we don't know

:10:52. > :10:57.how it is going to fall out and beans being mentioned about Iran

:10:58. > :11:02.again. We need to know that our defence agreement. -- things being

:11:03. > :11:08.mentioned. Who wants to have a quick go at the vegetable story? This is

:11:09. > :11:12.the story. The Telegraph front pages talking about eBay. A huge vegetable

:11:13. > :11:16.shortage because of terrible weather in Spain, when they had a load of

:11:17. > :11:22.rain followed by frost which meant they could not replant. Lettuces, we

:11:23. > :11:25.know that already, they are being rationed and various vegetables are

:11:26. > :11:30.being rationed and now they are being seen on eBay for gigantic sums

:11:31. > :11:34.of money. Were you aware of the shortage? I don't know if you'd been

:11:35. > :11:37.round the supermarket. Reds with three children, I buy vegetables

:11:38. > :11:40.every day and feed them to them but it makes you think that those of us

:11:41. > :11:46.who have allotments, if anyone does, could be coining it in. I'm going to

:11:47. > :11:48.go and look in my vegetable patch right now! We have to leave it

:11:49. > :11:49.there. Thank you for joining us. You'll both be back at 11:30pm

:11:50. > :11:55.for another look at the stories
