:00:00. > :00:00.After days of huge street protests, the Romanian government has

:00:00. > :00:07.withdrawn a draft decree which would have reduced some

:00:08. > :00:23.Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be

:00:24. > :00:26.With me are the broadcaster Penny Smith and Caroline Wheeler,

:00:27. > :00:28.political editor of the Sunday Express.

:00:29. > :00:35.The Sunday Telegraph leads on the government's

:00:36. > :00:37.?60 million investigation into historic allegations of abuse

:00:38. > :00:42.The paper says MPs are due to conclude that it's unfit

:00:43. > :00:44.The Observer reports that Theresa May's Government

:00:45. > :00:47.is going to make a major shift in housing policy,

:00:48. > :00:50.away from promoting home ownership and towards better deals for people

:00:51. > :00:58.Donald Trump appears to have found a new ally in the shape

:00:59. > :01:04.of the former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey.

:01:05. > :01:07.He's quoted in the Daily Express as hitting out at the "hysterical"

:01:08. > :01:13.overreactions of the president's critics.

:01:14. > :01:15.The Sunday Times has investigated what it call "deficiencies"

:01:16. > :01:17.in defence procurement, including ships so noisy Russian

:01:18. > :01:22.submarines can hear them 100 miles away.

:01:23. > :01:25.The photograph is of England player Ben Te'o celebrating victory over

:01:26. > :01:30.Finally, the Mail on Sunday's headline is a story about the former

:01:31. > :01:33.Ukip leader Nigel Farage, and how he is sharing a ?4 million

:01:34. > :01:35.property in West London with his friend, Laure Ferrari,

:01:36. > :01:51.Let's begin. First, the observer. He will have to come to Mr Trump in a

:01:52. > :02:00.moment. The lead story, Tories break with policy to back renters. It is

:02:01. > :02:05.breaking with the Thatcher policies, but you could also see it as Theresa

:02:06. > :02:09.May breaking with Cameron as well. This is essentially saying that it

:02:10. > :02:16.is now so difficult for so many families to ever get on the housing

:02:17. > :02:21.ladder that now they should sort out the renting sector. They are trying

:02:22. > :02:26.to do three-year guaranteed tenancies and trying to get rid of

:02:27. > :02:31.rogue landlords and make the whole process a lot easier for so many

:02:32. > :02:35.people, who will never own their own homes. There are many European

:02:36. > :02:40.countries where people don't and it is not an issue. They spend a lot

:02:41. > :02:45.less of their disposable income on renting and it makes a more mobile

:02:46. > :02:50.workforce and in many ways you could say it is better. Indeed. But it's a

:02:51. > :02:54.break with the past. People talk about Margaret Thatcher but it is

:02:55. > :03:01.hardwired into Conservative policy, to make us homeowners. Absolutely.

:03:02. > :03:05.Not long ago David Cameron addressed the party conference, talking about

:03:06. > :03:09.trying to transform people's lives from being generation rents due

:03:10. > :03:17.generation by and she is doing a reversal of this policy. Again, this

:03:18. > :03:20.isn't just about raking with David Cameron on foreign policy, in

:03:21. > :03:24.essence tearing up his views of interventionist foreign policy, so

:03:25. > :03:29.she has done it again. Also what interesting is it really fits with

:03:30. > :03:33.what her narrative is. This narrative about being for the many

:03:34. > :03:37.and not the privileged few. There is an assumption, and it is something

:03:38. > :03:41.chief of staff wrote about before getting into this post, that housing

:03:42. > :03:45.policy was very much geared towards those with bigger incomes and that

:03:46. > :03:49.actually goes on low and middle incomes were neglected and almost

:03:50. > :03:53.forced into homes that great at the expense of pouring more money into

:03:54. > :03:58.people who could go on and buy their homes. We should say this is a white

:03:59. > :04:02.paper as well. Yes, and only part of the announcement we expect. There

:04:03. > :04:08.will be more in the coming days up until Tuesday. And they say that

:04:09. > :04:11.instead of insisting that there is affordable housing for sale, they

:04:12. > :04:15.will make it affordable houses to rent and long-term. Staying on the

:04:16. > :04:20.front page of the Observer. They have the story about Trump slamming

:04:21. > :04:26.the judge who blocked his... So-called Trump! Yes, I am just

:04:27. > :04:31.quoting the headline, but you are right! He uses his usual strong

:04:32. > :04:35.language to describe this judge. Absolutely. This story has been

:04:36. > :04:40.going for seven days and was breaking last Saturday night with

:04:41. > :04:45.this ban are coming into force, that it would impact Conservative MPs, Mo

:04:46. > :04:49.Farah, etc, and overnight we get the news that basically a judge has

:04:50. > :04:53.launched a bid to overturn it, it has been successful and Trump is not

:04:54. > :04:58.very happy about it to say the least and he has done his usual wave of

:04:59. > :05:06.tweets at this so-called judge. He is very bombastic. There are people

:05:07. > :05:10.who suggest that the way he does this is that he puts it out there so

:05:11. > :05:17.that actually... But his position is actually further back. Talking about

:05:18. > :05:25.tweets, we've got a few more of them that have been coming in through the

:05:26. > :05:31.day. This is going back to the judge. He avoids a personal insult

:05:32. > :05:35.but does say this. Because the ban was lifted by a judge, many bad and

:05:36. > :05:40.dangerous people may be coming into our country. A terrible decision.

:05:41. > :05:46.There's another one. What is our country coming to when a judge can

:05:47. > :05:50.alter homeland security and anyone even with bad intentions can come

:05:51. > :06:00.into the US? It is a different sort of politics. It is. And his use of

:06:01. > :06:04.expressions like "bad dudes"... You might say he speaks the language of

:06:05. > :06:08.ordinary people. Look at the support he has had from people who support

:06:09. > :06:13.him anyway. His ratings are skyhigh with them. He is doing stuff and

:06:14. > :06:20.getting on with it. And quickly. Just what they want. Trump is

:06:21. > :06:27.obviously involved in this, but this is the Independent. The digital

:06:28. > :06:33.newspaper these days. Many is not Thatcher, we won't get US trade

:06:34. > :06:40.deal, Ken Clarke! -- Theresa May is not Thatcher. Interesting isn't it?

:06:41. > :06:46.Yes. As you say, not a huge surprise, and I suppose all he is

:06:47. > :06:50.saying is echoing what everyone is saying, but this is not something

:06:51. > :06:55.that we can fix in a day. It would be lovely if we could do, as many

:06:56. > :07:00.people would love, it would be great to say, right, let's sit round the

:07:01. > :07:04.table and sort this out and do it then. That's not how things happen,

:07:05. > :07:09.sadly. The other interesting thing about this, he was Margaret

:07:10. > :07:15.Thatcher's Chancellor and his saying they will never enjoy the kind of

:07:16. > :07:20.relationship that Maggi and Regan did. With the handholding and the

:07:21. > :07:29.inappropriate touching in this election should, as others have

:07:30. > :07:34.said, he is... Allegedly has a fear of slopes and steps! This whole

:07:35. > :07:39.thing is about this relationship and he has echoed this in conversations

:07:40. > :07:45.with her and apparently this was a story we had a couple of weeks ago

:07:46. > :07:50.and he refers to her as "my Maggie". The problem is, the chemistry, we

:07:51. > :07:55.were all sitting there and looking at the chemistry, he is quite brash

:07:56. > :08:00.and loud and forceful and she is a kind of vicar's daughter and how it

:08:01. > :08:14.this will interplay is fascinating. Do you think he has done this...

:08:15. > :08:18.America is important to us and she is just getting on with trying to

:08:19. > :08:25.build a new relationship. It was in fortunate in some way in that she

:08:26. > :08:29.had the successful in some ways, and everything was going smoothly,

:08:30. > :08:34.except for that question by the BBC which was suggested to destroy the

:08:35. > :08:38.relationship. -- unfortunate. But largely it went off without a hitch

:08:39. > :08:42.and then of course she is on the plane overnight, in fact I was there

:08:43. > :08:46.with her, and of course she introduces this executive order

:08:47. > :08:53.which throws the whole world, in terms of its borders, into chaos.

:08:54. > :08:57.The Sunday express front page. Your name is on this story. The

:08:58. > :09:02.Archbishop of Canterbury called for the world to give Donald Trump a

:09:03. > :09:07.chance. Why is he saying this? It is interesting because normally

:09:08. > :09:11.religious figures don't comment on political stories. Obviously he is

:09:12. > :09:15.the former Archbishop of Canterbury which gives him more leveraged to

:09:16. > :09:19.make these kinds of interventions. What is not saying is that Trump is

:09:20. > :09:24.brilliant and indefensible, but what he is saying is that ultimately we

:09:25. > :09:27.can't say that he is the worst politician in the world. There are

:09:28. > :09:33.certainly others like Robert Mugabe who could claim that role more than

:09:34. > :09:36.him. But ultimately there has been an hysterical outpourings could

:09:37. > :09:39.really undermined, as you were saying, the special relationship,

:09:40. > :09:45.which in this prose Brexit scenario is very important to us. And he has

:09:46. > :09:49.also applauded Trump's decision to put persecuted Christians at the

:09:50. > :09:58.front... This to the former Archbishop? Yes, absolutely. And

:09:59. > :10:04.inside is about what Trump might give the queen on the state visit

:10:05. > :10:09.that is coming up, which I'm sure the queen is looking forward to. Of

:10:10. > :10:15.course we don't know when it is happening. But if it does he is

:10:16. > :10:20.going to give her a lovely Western saddle, when he isn't busy tweeting

:10:21. > :10:25.and doing selfies and he doesn't just want to give them something

:10:26. > :10:29.that will be gathering dust on the mantelpiece. This is what a source

:10:30. > :10:34.says. He wants to give them something that he knows they will

:10:35. > :10:50.enjoy and use. Of course a keen horse woman. He is going to in grave

:10:51. > :10:54.on one side... On one side the Queen's seal and the other side with

:10:55. > :10:59.the President's Cup group three. He is big gestures. I was sent to

:11:00. > :11:03.Washington twice in the same week, so have established a number of

:11:04. > :11:07.Trump's contacts. Apparently this is genuine and something he is already

:11:08. > :11:10.planning, because there is a suggestion that this state visit

:11:11. > :11:18.could be in June. They obviously like giving presents because of

:11:19. > :11:26.course Trump's wife gave a blue bag to Mrs Obama. But also the presence

:11:27. > :11:30.aren't always that great. President Obama gave the Queen something like

:11:31. > :11:37.an iPad Manu with some show tunes on it. As we were talking about big

:11:38. > :11:43.gestures, we have just heard President Trump will attend the G7

:11:44. > :11:46.summit in Sicily. That's a White House statement that has just come

:11:47. > :11:52.out. That will be an interesting occasion! That is a beautiful area.

:11:53. > :11:56.It is. But the thought of Mr Trump with all of those European

:11:57. > :12:03.leaders... I like that Theresa May suggested she could possibly be a

:12:04. > :12:08.go-between between Europe and Trump. They say, it's OK, we will do it

:12:09. > :12:12.through Twitter. You were raising earlier than I thought that he might

:12:13. > :12:16.tweet from inside Windsor Castle or wherever he will be. Yes, Buckingham

:12:17. > :12:21.Palace, or wherever, from inside the coach. I'm sure we will see every

:12:22. > :12:26.step of the way very close up. Moving on. The Sunday Times, serious

:12:27. > :12:33.business, the huge gap in UK defences. Penny? There are a lot of

:12:34. > :12:39.things in here. Pick out a couple. This is the former MoD director who

:12:40. > :12:46.is talking about the gaping problems in our defences. For example, they

:12:47. > :12:52.say these are ?1 billion apiece and could be detected and disrupted for

:12:53. > :12:58.up to 100 miles because they sound like a box of spammers. Have new

:12:59. > :13:01.light armoured vehicles, too big to fit into the main transport aircraft

:13:02. > :13:05.without being partly dismantled and then they have to be accompanied by

:13:06. > :13:09.a crane. Then we have the reconnaissance drones. They cost 1.2

:13:10. > :13:13.Ilium pounds and are still not up to real service because of the

:13:14. > :13:19.technical difficulties. So it's a litany of things that have gone

:13:20. > :13:22.wrong, where he is essentially suggesting that people aren't

:13:23. > :13:28.looking ahead and working out what these things... IT hasn't spoken to

:13:29. > :13:32.the paper. This has been dug out by the Sunday Times. And if you see the

:13:33. > :13:37.byline, it isn't the defence editor who would have been plugging away at

:13:38. > :13:40.this for some time to come up with a dossier of offences that have

:13:41. > :13:43.happened and of course it is very topical at the moment, given the

:13:44. > :13:49.fact that we are finding ourselves in this new unknown age. What's

:13:50. > :13:53.America going to do? What's happening with Iran and Russia? So

:13:54. > :13:59.making sure that we are up to our capabilities and we can sort of send

:14:00. > :14:02.off any aggressive force that comes towards us and that's quite

:14:03. > :14:09.important. At this isn't new. We've seen this kind of thing happened

:14:10. > :14:12.before with aircraft carriers being ordered to carry aircraft and the

:14:13. > :14:17.Trident missile heading towards America rather than the Middle East.

:14:18. > :14:25.It quickly, the Sunday Times. -- very quickly. Cuts of 20%. This is

:14:26. > :14:28.because they don't want to be named and shamed because of the amount of

:14:29. > :14:33.sugar in chocolate bars, so instead of reducing the amount of sugar they

:14:34. > :14:42.have to meet government targets for reducing sugar, they will make them

:14:43. > :14:46.smaller. -- and having to meet. They say the American food giant behind

:14:47. > :14:50.Cadbury will take a bite out of it. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

:14:51. > :14:54.My children are addicted to chocolate and the idea of me trying

:14:55. > :14:58.to give them a carrot as a treat probably wouldn't go down so well.

:14:59. > :15:05.So if someone has taken a choice out of my hands... Do you not think you

:15:06. > :15:12.would just buy two? Well we won't be able to buy carrots any more anyway!

:15:13. > :15:15.The vegie shortage! Anyway, thank you very much.

:15:16. > :15:19.Coming up next, it's the Film Review.
