:00:22. > :00:24.Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing
:00:25. > :00:25.us tomorrow. With me are John Crowley,
:00:26. > :00:28.managing editor of Newsweek Media Group, and the broadcaster,
:00:29. > :00:36.Lynn Faulds Wood. Thank you very much for coming in.
:00:37. > :00:37.Tomorrow's front pages. We start with this.
:00:38. > :00:40.The Telegraph says that the Brexit talks between the UK and the EU have
:00:41. > :00:43.descended into a slanging match with the EU's Chief Negotiator,
:00:44. > :00:44.Michel Barnier being called "unhelpful."
:00:45. > :00:46.Whereas the Times picks up on the frustration
:00:47. > :00:50.on the other side in its headline: "'It's time to get serious',
:00:51. > :00:57.for disappointment this week because, the paper claims,
:00:58. > :01:01.the Japanese government won't rush into free-trade talks with the UK.
:01:02. > :01:04.The Metro reports that the driver accused of killing eight people
:01:05. > :01:08.in a motorway crash on the M1 was almost twice over
:01:09. > :01:18.The lead in the Express is that arthritis sufferers,
:01:19. > :01:21.who take Ibuprofen for pain relief, are at greater risk of high blood
:01:22. > :01:30.Meanwhile, the Mirror on its front page says that statins could halve
:01:31. > :01:33.the risk of breast cancer according to new research.
:01:34. > :01:36.The Daily Mail highlights the case of a five-year-old Christian girl,
:01:37. > :01:39.who it says, was forced to live with Muslim foster carers.
:01:40. > :01:42.And finally, the Guardian lead is that there have been a record
:01:43. > :01:45.number of calls to the police over mental health.
:01:46. > :01:48.But it also has a photo of the 51st Notting Hill Carnival adorning
:01:49. > :02:07.We will start with the Times. Britain has to get serious, says
:02:08. > :02:12.Brussels. They would say that, wouldn't they? It is frustrating
:02:13. > :02:22.what is happening at the moment. It seems to be so sluggish. There was
:02:23. > :02:25.the slanging match at the beginning which is still ongoing when Boris
:02:26. > :02:30.Johnson said they could whistle for money. The government in Europe want
:02:31. > :02:35.to talk about how much money Britain owes to Europe. The other thing...
:02:36. > :02:42.They are setting the agenda at the moment. They want to talk about the
:02:43. > :02:47.Anglo-Irish border and the rights of EU immigrants who want to remain in
:02:48. > :02:50.Britain. Those are not bad things to want to talk about. That is what
:02:51. > :02:57.they are saying they want. But Britain wants to talk about other
:02:58. > :03:00.things. They think they are serious. They want to show their hand. There
:03:01. > :03:11.have been different treatments on the same story. We are getting the
:03:12. > :03:15.same quotes. The Times is the most nuanced, talking about Brussels. But
:03:16. > :03:20.when you read into it, this is the negotiating stage, hard bowling,
:03:21. > :03:23.they said British sources say the lack of a paper was entirely
:03:24. > :03:27.deliberate and the government was not ready to commit to a financial
:03:28. > :03:34.settlement without the EU discussing a transition package. To give some
:03:35. > :03:39.credit to David Davis, this is his negotiating line. He will not give.
:03:40. > :03:43.He is talking about the ambiguity which we will talk about from The
:03:44. > :03:50.Telegraph in a bit. Constructive ambiguity. What does that mean. But,
:03:51. > :04:02.as they said, whether you agree with this or not, this is high
:04:03. > :04:05.negotiation. If they say we will pay you hundreds of millions of pounds
:04:06. > :04:09.in a divorce bill, don't worry about Ireland, that will be OK, people
:04:10. > :04:16.will still be able to move back and forward, clearly that is not what
:04:17. > :04:22.David Davis wants to say. They want to say it is unseemly, certainly, at
:04:23. > :04:26.the moment, with them stabbing each other in the front, this is not how
:04:27. > :04:33.politics should work, but they are speaking to their electorates. Look
:04:34. > :04:39.at that guy. He is stupid. Do you think they are impressed by this? It
:04:40. > :04:44.is like schoolboys being rude to each other. Michel Barnier has said
:04:45. > :04:51.I am ready to intensify negotiations in coming weeks in order to advance.
:04:52. > :04:57.A warning, a threat? He is frustrated according to the Times. I
:04:58. > :05:03.understand. He is calm. Publicly, all we are seeing is not very much.
:05:04. > :05:10.They need to crack on with it in private. Instead of insulting each
:05:11. > :05:21.other, perhaps telling each other to shut up, they just need to agree on
:05:22. > :05:26.something that looks positive to everyone's electorates. By 27
:05:27. > :05:34.against wind, they will win, it looks like. -- but 27 against one.
:05:35. > :05:38.He has been described as unhelpful on the front of The Daily Telegraph.
:05:39. > :05:46.Britain is not happy with his comments. The slanging match
:05:47. > :05:53.continues. I think we have covered the front page of The Daily
:05:54. > :05:59.Telegraph. The i. It is getting worse. We are used to hurricanes
:06:00. > :06:07.blasting through, but it is getting worse for Texas and Houston in
:06:08. > :06:12.particular. I am not surprised. My taxi driver on the way he told me
:06:13. > :06:20.his family lived in Houston and he was scared. They cannot get in and
:06:21. > :06:27.out of their building. It is terrible. Pets are being washed
:06:28. > :06:31.away. This is terrible. And it is not finished. 30 inches of rainfall
:06:32. > :06:41.have fallen on taxes and spreading to Louisiana as well. And another 20
:06:42. > :06:47.million... 20 inches. This week is Claire they are at breaking point.
:06:48. > :06:53.It looks like 30,000 will have to abandon their homes. And Donald
:06:54. > :06:57.Trump is visiting the region. I don't think he will visit Houston.
:06:58. > :07:04.Whether that is deliberate... We can speculate. He cannot get in and out.
:07:05. > :07:10.Do runner motorways. That is his argument. -- there are no. He says
:07:11. > :07:15.he doesn't want to disrupt the relief effort. But this is the first
:07:16. > :07:23.epic natural disaster event that has happened on his watch. The klaxon in
:07:24. > :07:31.his ear is the disaster that Hurricane Katrina was for George
:07:32. > :07:34.Bush. Can he rise above it? He was tweeting about a myriad of other
:07:35. > :07:45.events on the weekend about this. Can he rise above it... Can he stop
:07:46. > :07:48.tweeting! Can he give hope? In his statement at the podium over this,
:07:49. > :07:54.because he was at a press conference, the Finnish Prime
:07:55. > :07:58.Minister was visiting, he kept to the script. Everyone was watching
:07:59. > :08:04.closely. To round soft, very quickly, people have not picked up
:08:05. > :08:09.in the UK the fact you have the shale gas, oil refineries, and fuel
:08:10. > :08:11.prices have gone up. People are watching what has happened in
:08:12. > :08:19.Houston for global rough percussions. Yes. They are finding
:08:20. > :08:25.the oil. It will hit the cost. The price will go up. -- are refining.
:08:26. > :08:35.That will concentrate minds more. The Guardian. The first story.
:08:36. > :08:41.Record calls to police about mental health. This is sad. The police say
:08:42. > :08:46.every five minutes they get a call about mental health. It is a huge
:08:47. > :08:51.number. Why call the police? They say it there is a failure of the NHS
:08:52. > :08:54.mental health services and there have been cutbacks to deal with the
:08:55. > :08:59.problems. People are turning to them. There are many people with
:09:00. > :09:07.very serious mental health issues, hearing voices, things we read about
:09:08. > :09:16.in the papers, not rare, at someone being stabbed. -- but. People don't
:09:17. > :09:24.know where to turn. The NHS is not answering so they are turning to the
:09:25. > :09:29.police. We have to sort this out now. There is a huge rise in people
:09:30. > :09:34.calling because someone in their family, friends, they have mental
:09:35. > :09:42.health issues, it is frightening, frankly. This quote coming from
:09:43. > :09:46.Inspector Michael Brown. He says most people in contact with the
:09:47. > :09:49.police about mental health issues do not need the police, they need a
:09:50. > :09:55.mental health professional. They don't know where to go, basically.
:09:56. > :10:00.That is the problem. Just carry on with the Guardian. It is all about
:10:01. > :10:08.pay. Do you think bosses will reveal their pay packet? We don't do...
:10:09. > :10:14.Publicly, to explain, they would be obliged to publish the Chief
:10:15. > :10:22.Executive and average British worker pay gap today. Theresa May, I don't
:10:23. > :10:30.know if... It is not going to happen. She has made up her mind
:10:31. > :10:36.already. This is weasel words. I have seen it announced before. I
:10:37. > :10:39.don't think this is going to work. They are saying the Prime Minister
:10:40. > :10:46.has pledged to put workers on company boards. They say it has been
:10:47. > :10:50.watered down. But would you not love to see... Imagine just for a second
:10:51. > :10:54.it did happen. It would be fascinating to see these publicly
:10:55. > :11:02.listed companies, the difference in pay ratios. People would not want to
:11:03. > :11:09.go to work the next day. The weasel words is to do it on a comply or
:11:10. > :11:22.explained basis. That means you can decide to tell these workers or... I
:11:23. > :11:26.could add something. Or you could not explain it. It is too easy to
:11:27. > :11:35.dodge. It is written in to get out. The Mail. Christian, a five-year-old
:11:36. > :11:45.Grecian girl, put into foster care with two was family. -- Christian.
:11:46. > :11:53.It is in Tower Hamlets. I want to know if this is the only case. I
:11:54. > :11:58.worked for The Mail a long time ago. I am disappointed to see this as the
:11:59. > :12:02.front-page story. Miniseries things are happening in the world. This is
:12:03. > :12:12.serious, but it is not for the first page. -- There are many serious. You
:12:13. > :12:22.can argue that... It is an important story that... Is this the only time
:12:23. > :12:26.this has happened? There is no context. What on Earth is the
:12:27. > :12:31.council doing having something like this happen that so obviously is
:12:32. > :12:38.going to have terrible repercussions? If the press get hold
:12:39. > :12:43.of it, as they just did... Alarm bells should be ringing. The child
:12:44. > :12:48.was crying saying she does not understand Arabic. She also said she
:12:49. > :12:53.was made to it on the floor. This story will not go away because MPs
:12:54. > :13:02.demanded a review. That is the splash. We have not looked inside, I
:13:03. > :13:07.am reading what's on the front. Is that a great witness for the courts
:13:08. > :13:13.to be admitted to her? Is there a bit of racism creeping in? I will
:13:14. > :13:19.jump in. We approached Tower Hamlets council for a response. They said
:13:20. > :13:25.they are unable to comment on individual cases. The council's
:13:26. > :13:29.fostering service provides a loving and stable home for hundreds of
:13:30. > :13:32.children every year. In every case we give absolute consideration to
:13:33. > :13:37.the background of the children and cultural identity. All foster carers
:13:38. > :13:52.get training and support from the council to get fully trained and
:13:53. > :13:57.qualification ready parents stop. The Children's Commissioner is
:13:58. > :14:05.asking questions now. It is not going away. If this is the one this
:14:06. > :14:09.ever happened and there is a reason why it happened, OK. If it turns out
:14:10. > :14:15.every council in the country has the same problem, then it is a huge
:14:16. > :14:22.story. But at the moment, I am hoping it is only one. It is not
:14:23. > :14:36.going to go away. Finishing off. Statins. A miracle drug. I don't
:14:37. > :14:41.know what they are. Are of a cheap? -- are they cheap? There is a huge
:14:42. > :14:44.question over is cholesterol really as big a problem as it is made out
:14:45. > :15:00.to be? 1 million women were looked at. They
:15:01. > :15:04.are saying there is a connection between high cholesterol and
:15:05. > :15:10.survival of breast cancer and they are thinking that the use of
:15:11. > :15:15.statins... Are all sorts of reasons. I'm going to jump in. They also said
:15:16. > :15:23.you are better off doing half an hour 's risk of walking. Thank you
:15:24. > :15:27.very much to both of you. Just to update you, North Korea has launched
:15:28. > :15:34.a missile test that has gone over Japan's northernmost island of
:15:35. > :15:39.Hokkaido. The UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has said he is
:15:40. > :15:43.outraged by North Korea's latest provocation. Plenty more coming up
:15:44. > :15:45.on BBC News. Don't forget you can see the front
:15:46. > :15:48.pages of the papers online seven days a week at
:15:49. > :15:53.BBC.co.uk/papers - and if you miss the programme any
:15:54. > :15:56.evening you can watch it Thank you Lynn and John,
:15:57. > :16:05.next on the BBC News Channel,
