0:00:20 > 0:00:23Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be

0:00:23 > 0:00:25bringing us tomorrow.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28With me are Susie Boniface, columnist at the Daily Mirror

0:00:28 > 0:00:29and Public Affairs Consultant Alex Deane.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30Good evening.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Tomorrow's front pages.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38The Financial Times has more on Spain's move to sack Catalonia's

0:00:38 > 0:00:43regional government as the fallout over independence deepens.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45The i is leading with the same story.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47It says the police are ready to intervene following Catalonia's

0:00:47 > 0:00:49declaration of independence.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52The Telegraph reports on warnings from the European Commission

0:00:52 > 0:00:55president, who says the EU doesn't need more cracks

0:00:55 > 0:01:00following Catalonia's declaration of independence.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03The Daily Mail reports nine British servicemen have been taken off

0:01:03 > 0:01:05a nuclear submarine amid sex and drug allegations.

0:01:05 > 0:01:10The top story in the Daily Mirror is the release of newly-declassified

0:01:10 > 0:01:15files related to the assassination of JFK.

0:01:15 > 0:01:20Many of us have been looking through them, trying to find something. And

0:01:20 > 0:01:27some people have, you have?I have found stuff that wasn't in it.Very

0:01:27 > 0:01:32interesting. We will get to JK shortly, everyone is talking about

0:01:32 > 0:01:39it again. But we will start with the big story of the day -- JFK shortly.

0:01:39 > 0:01:46The crisis in Spain, it escalates, that is the pretty blonde headline,

0:01:46 > 0:01:51it has been escalating for days, in all fairness -- pretty blunt. This

0:01:51 > 0:01:57is the latest drawn-out stage of the catastrophe, chaos, goodness knows

0:01:57 > 0:02:00what is going to happen next, and every day there seems to be a new

0:02:00 > 0:02:03disastrous thing that someone has decided to do that will move things

0:02:03 > 0:02:09further towards some sort of reward them. -- some sort of horrible

0:02:09 > 0:02:14event. The Catalan leader was challenged in a way to declare

0:02:14 > 0:02:19independence after the referendum, he said we will not declare

0:02:19 > 0:02:22independence, we want talks with Spain, which were refused, and then

0:02:22 > 0:02:29he batted it over to the Catalonian Parliament, and said you can decide.

0:02:29 > 0:02:34If he had decided it would have been the chopping block for him, but he

0:02:34 > 0:02:37shouted over to the Parliament of Catalonia and they said they would

0:02:37 > 0:02:44have independence, and the Madrid Madrid -- government has said, no,

0:02:44 > 0:02:50you are going to have direct rule, and what is going to happen next?

0:02:50 > 0:02:54Are we going to have a free and fair election in which everyone in

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Catalonia votes for independence and everyone accept the result? Do we

0:02:58 > 0:03:03have the kind of election which the Catalonian independence movement is

0:03:03 > 0:03:14not going to approve of?52-48 is a decisive margin, anyway... I derive

0:03:14 > 0:03:18my view from the way people have behaved, and the Madrid government

0:03:18 > 0:03:22could hardly have played this worse, they sent people with riot shields

0:03:22 > 0:03:28and batons and beat grandmothers away from polling booths, legal

0:03:28 > 0:03:33polling booths or not, they seized ballot boxes. The scenes in early

0:03:33 > 0:03:39October.Exactly.The Spanish police are moving in and there is concern

0:03:39 > 0:03:43expressed about what you are talking about. How could you not fear that

0:03:43 > 0:03:48what happened when they conducted the referendum in Catalonia, which

0:03:48 > 0:03:54no doubt would have passed off peacefully if Madrid had not

0:03:54 > 0:03:56intervened, will be repeated, and everyone remembers that Lincoln

0:03:56 > 0:04:02suspended habeas corpus in the American Civil War.Yeah, I remember

0:04:02 > 0:04:09that LAUGHTER If you have studied American

0:04:09 > 0:04:14history, you will remember that. My point is, that is what is happening

0:04:14 > 0:04:19here, the Catalonian Parliament wants to secede from Spain and the

0:04:19 > 0:04:23government of Spain is sending in the militia to stop them from being

0:04:23 > 0:04:28able to do so and imposing direct rule, the stakes are that high.Is

0:04:28 > 0:04:33it not the case of another part of the world that is becoming

0:04:33 > 0:04:36antiestablishment and anti-austerity and would like its own sake?

0:04:36 > 0:04:45Nationalism is on the rise? -- phone said. It is the world order of today

0:04:45 > 0:04:51-- its own say.The stakes are high, because it is determining whether a

0:04:51 > 0:04:56country stays together or parts ways, Lincoln won the fight and is

0:04:56 > 0:04:59regarded as a hero, but the criteria for deciding whether a country is a

0:04:59 > 0:05:05country is very obvious, you have defined borders, Catalonia has

0:05:05 > 0:05:11those, you have a defined population and you are able in to enter into

0:05:11 > 0:05:15discussions with other states, and clearly there is enough of a GDP

0:05:15 > 0:05:17here, this is the richest part of Spain and there is enough activity

0:05:17 > 0:05:22that it could be a state, bigger than some European states, so what

0:05:22 > 0:05:30is to stop them?Let's move on to The Daily Telegraph,. As with all of

0:05:30 > 0:05:34these claims of independence or a change of world order, it affects

0:05:34 > 0:05:42everybody.Yes, we live in a global world. The Telegraph are focusing on

0:05:42 > 0:05:50the potential ramifications for the EU.Much of the thrust for

0:05:50 > 0:05:54independence is based upon the fact Catalonia feels they are in a strong

0:05:54 > 0:05:58position, not just supporting the population, but they have a fit of

0:05:58 > 0:06:01the Spanish population and an awful lot of their GDP and they feel they

0:06:01 > 0:06:05would be strong on their own. Across the EU, every nation has a

0:06:05 > 0:06:11separatist breakaway movement somewhere. Cornwall, Wales,

0:06:11 > 0:06:18Scotland, parts of Belgium and France, Corsica and Venice. If that

0:06:18 > 0:06:23was to repeat across the EU, you would have to have I suppose those

0:06:23 > 0:06:27states that wanted to have some kind of independence, they would have to

0:06:27 > 0:06:32feel they also likely to wealth and success on their own. Many of them

0:06:32 > 0:06:36will feel that is not the case, so you won't have all of the EU

0:06:36 > 0:06:41splintering apart in the same way and I doubt that other nations after

0:06:41 > 0:06:47watching Spain will have it in the same way.I put this to both of you,

0:06:47 > 0:06:51although I want to move on to other stories. The Prime Minister of Spain

0:06:51 > 0:06:58has put this to a vote, whether this can be trusted or not, remains to be

0:06:58 > 0:07:03seen, but he has put this to a vote to the people of Catalonia. It is

0:07:03 > 0:07:07hard to imagine the people who voted for independence last time in the

0:07:07 > 0:07:10face of riot police won't do so again, and the relatives and friends

0:07:10 > 0:07:14of theirs won't follow their example. Madrid has made a real mess

0:07:14 > 0:07:20of this. If it was just an advisory referendum they should have ignored

0:07:20 > 0:07:24it.If you are going to have a referendum that is this important,

0:07:24 > 0:07:29if you're going to call a vote, it should be a proper referendum, not a

0:07:29 > 0:07:34revote in Parliament, it should be a proper referendum with a binding

0:07:34 > 0:07:40turnout, you have got to have this many people that will agree with you

0:07:40 > 0:07:46before you can achieve it.Dialogue, as well, which didn't happen. Now to

0:07:46 > 0:07:53another story on the front page of The Daily Telegraph. This is in

0:07:53 > 0:07:57relation to a report in The Sun newspaper about allegations of

0:07:57 > 0:08:04sexual harassment in Westminster by researchers and other staff of theI

0:08:04 > 0:08:08suppose this is relating to the Harvey Weinstein scandal, moving

0:08:08 > 0:08:12into other areas of life and the situation in Parliament, if you are

0:08:12 > 0:08:16an MP and you have an office with staff, they are your employees and

0:08:16 > 0:08:21they are not Parliament's employees. Parliament has its own employees,

0:08:21 > 0:08:28and what this story is about, Parliament's standards boss, the

0:08:28 > 0:08:32Parliamentary authorities, asked that the same rights should be given

0:08:32 > 0:08:35to all the people who work in the Houses of Parliament, so MPs

0:08:35 > 0:08:41personal office staff have the same implement rights as everyone else in

0:08:41 > 0:08:44the Houses of Parliament, and uses MPs pushed back against that and

0:08:44 > 0:08:51they refused. -- and it says. That is not what any of us would expect

0:08:51 > 0:08:54in a place where we work, and it means that if you have a problem

0:08:54 > 0:08:58with your boss come there are only three or four people in your boss

0:08:58 > 0:09:05and the boss has done it's you, -- and the boss has done it to you,

0:09:05 > 0:09:08then it is hard to know who to go to, and that is the problem. There

0:09:08 > 0:09:16is a help line.Number ten has said the right things, but it is

0:09:16 > 0:09:18impossible to imagine parliamentarians could resist the

0:09:18 > 0:09:21pressure to have this properly investigated and revealed if there

0:09:21 > 0:09:25are things to reveal, I think the current climate will have the truth

0:09:25 > 0:09:33come out and those who say it shouldn't our daft. -- are.The

0:09:33 > 0:09:36truth came out about Donald Trump, he admitted it, and he is still the

0:09:36 > 0:09:42leader of the free world. Now to the Financial Times. Maybe a story that

0:09:42 > 0:09:50makes the world look a bit better. This is something we were warned

0:09:50 > 0:09:55about after Brexit, Humvees were going to flee the country. --

0:09:55 > 0:10:09companies.We were told everything, and as they say, we haven't left

0:10:09 > 0:10:12yet, but as someone who is a Brexiteer and who thinks that our

0:10:12 > 0:10:20future will be bright, I must be as sceptical about stories like this as

0:10:20 > 0:10:25I should be about stories when it says such and such a company is

0:10:25 > 0:10:29going to leave, and the fact is, all these company 's posturing to seek

0:10:29 > 0:10:36the maximum advantage for their company, so if someone moves in

0:10:36 > 0:10:40their direction, they say, fantastic, more likely, but if they

0:10:40 > 0:10:45don't get the noises they want, they say, I had a nice trip to Frankfurt

0:10:45 > 0:10:51and the weather was lovely. We have got to be sceptical on those kind of

0:10:51 > 0:10:54announcements, and the same way we have got to be sceptical about the

0:10:54 > 0:11:00press conferences we see happening after the negotiations because we

0:11:00 > 0:11:03might think we have lived with Brexit for ever but we are still in

0:11:03 > 0:11:09the Eddie stages. -- early.Exactly, we have got to be sceptical about

0:11:09 > 0:11:12everything we heard about Brexit, because there wasn't that much that

0:11:12 > 0:11:17was clear about what Brexit involved.I don't believe that.If

0:11:17 > 0:11:24it was clear, the negotiation would be over? What was clear was the

0:11:24 > 0:11:29decision, we would be able to govern ourselves, and negotiate with others

0:11:29 > 0:11:35on our own esteem and control our own borders, and elation ship with

0:11:35 > 0:11:43other countries is complex, but the way we weather turning the won --

0:11:43 > 0:11:45and the relationship with other countries is complex, but the way we

0:11:45 > 0:11:52were determining our own future, that was clear. And now we have got

0:11:52 > 0:11:55a highly critical report which is the NHS was hit by the Wannacry

0:11:55 > 0:12:03attack, because of cyber security failings. It goes into more detail?

0:12:03 > 0:12:09It says the same thing. It does a bit. The National Audit Office says

0:12:09 > 0:12:14one in three NHS trusts were hit by the cyber attack, because they

0:12:14 > 0:12:20updated things less than most. With attacks like this it is seeking the

0:12:20 > 0:12:26weakest victim, like the burglar who goes along the street, the dummy

0:12:26 > 0:12:29camera over your house might not protect you from a determined

0:12:29 > 0:12:35burglar but they might move onto the next house. The point is not that

0:12:35 > 0:12:38the NHS security systems were bad, the point is that they were amongst

0:12:38 > 0:12:44the worst and that is why the NHS suffered so badly.I'm determined

0:12:44 > 0:12:50Susie can talk about the next story. These are allegations regarding nine

0:12:50 > 0:13:01sailors. What do you know from the front page question not they will be

0:13:01 > 0:13:05court-martialed, probably, standard operating procedure that if someone

0:13:05 > 0:13:11is accused of something, they are removed from their operating vessel.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15They might not all go to court martial, but the allegations are

0:13:15 > 0:13:24that nine sub Mariner 's were found to have tested positive for cocaine,

0:13:24 > 0:13:27some or all of them while on duty, and one man is said to have sex with

0:13:27 > 0:13:33a prostitute in a swimming pool. What a difficult place to have sex

0:13:33 > 0:13:39with anybody, really. The interesting thing is that not that

0:13:39 > 0:13:41this happened with the military, because there are thousands of

0:13:41 > 0:13:44people in the military, but the fact you had nine from one vessel, one

0:13:44 > 0:13:53vote. -- one vote.Allegedly.It was carrying the nuclear deterrent, and

0:13:53 > 0:13:59they are also sub Mariner 's, they are the most highly trained and most

0:13:59 > 0:14:03carefully selected people within the senior service and that is because

0:14:03 > 0:14:06they have to be able to be the kind of people who can operate under

0:14:06 > 0:14:12water for six months at a time without soap and deodorant or raises

0:14:12 > 0:14:15and an extremely high pressure situations, part of their training

0:14:15 > 0:14:21is you have two escape from an underwater submersion situation, but

0:14:21 > 0:14:26you can't do that if you are someone who panics and if you go on shore

0:14:26 > 0:14:33and takes a load of class a drugs. There may be more to it?Yes. But

0:14:33 > 0:14:35whoever was in charge of the submarine training school, they

0:14:35 > 0:14:38might have a quick look at how on earth these people, if they are

0:14:38 > 0:14:45found guilty, got through the training process.We have had a

0:14:45 > 0:14:50statement from the Ministry of Defence which confirms nine British

0:14:50 > 0:14:54servicemen have been dismissed from duty from HMS vigilant which carries

0:14:54 > 0:15:04the Trident deterrent. The tests moved positive. The Royal Navy says

0:15:04 > 0:15:07they don't tolerate drug misuse by service personnel and those found to

0:15:07 > 0:15:09have fallen short of their high standards face being discharged from

0:15:09 > 0:15:15service.Drug testing is fairly regular in the service, as well, so

0:15:15 > 0:15:22you have got to be pretty dumb to do that. Most people pass these things

0:15:22 > 0:15:28with flying colours, so this is an outlier, if true. The big talking

0:15:28 > 0:15:34point, even if there is nothing that much new, the JFK files, and many

0:15:34 > 0:15:39papers have gone pretty big on this, look at The Daily Mirror. The front

0:15:39 > 0:15:45page. You have been looking through this, is there anything we are

0:15:45 > 0:15:55learning which is new? This is the most fascinating and gripping

0:15:55 > 0:16:00mystery that has been for most of my lifetime, and people will always

0:16:00 > 0:16:04talk about this, which is why the tabloids will be doing it, but

0:16:04 > 0:16:09business solution or answer to the conspiracy theories. This is a

0:16:09 > 0:16:11re-stoke in and putting the fire underneath everything to keep people

0:16:11 > 0:16:17asking questions. It shows a few things, like most people who look at

0:16:17 > 0:16:23the evidence, it is difficult to believe one shooter conducted the

0:16:23 > 0:16:29assassination of JFK. Weird things happen, the magic bullet theory

0:16:29 > 0:16:34might be true, that is what the bullet did in the path of all that

0:16:34 > 0:16:39damage to the president, but the papers reveal that the FBI revealed

0:16:39 > 0:16:46at the time -- that the FBI at the time did not think that Lee Harvey

0:16:46 > 0:17:00's bald acted alone. -- Lee Harvey Oswald. The point is, pretty

0:17:00 > 0:17:04understandably and predictably, at the time the FBI had people who are

0:17:04 > 0:17:07questioning what was determined to be the ultimate truth, and also they

0:17:07 > 0:17:11reveal that J Edgar Hoover came down very heavy and very early in his

0:17:11 > 0:17:15decision to say, we just need to say that the Harvey Oswald was the

0:17:15 > 0:17:20killer and was the only shooter, and that might have been true in the

0:17:20 > 0:17:24end, but it was like one of those uneasy things, you have no right to

0:17:24 > 0:17:31know that at the time. What you did have the time, total panic. Complete

0:17:31 > 0:17:34panic within the FBI and CIA, everyone else around the no one

0:17:34 > 0:17:39knowing what happened, and what you won't have in these files, any kind

0:17:39 > 0:17:44of memo that says, there seems to be some kind of wing nut responsible

0:17:44 > 0:17:49for this, who we noticed six months ago and we should have collared him

0:17:49 > 0:17:55and he has gone and done some stupid. We can think of terrorism

0:17:55 > 0:18:00incidents in the last 12 months ago where police have known about

0:18:00 > 0:18:04someone but he has got lucky and done something anyway, it is that

0:18:04 > 0:18:10scenario. That doesn't suit the conspiracy theorists.That is right.

0:18:10 > 0:18:16The one thing I thought, many of the files mentioned the conspiracy

0:18:16 > 0:18:20theories, as well, as lines of investigation.Yes, it started very

0:18:20 > 0:18:27early.The dead express now. British newspaper got tipped off before the

0:18:27 > 0:18:33Kennedy assassination Ash the Daily Express. Someone got in touch with a

0:18:33 > 0:18:39Cambridge newspaper reporter.25 minutes before the shooting, a

0:18:39 > 0:18:43senior reporter at the Cambridge news got a phone call saying there

0:18:43 > 0:18:51was going to be big news from the US embassy. And then it happened. I

0:18:51 > 0:18:57think the person at the CIA who was doing the whole conspiracy dialled

0:18:57 > 0:19:03the wrong number. It depends on the person reporting, these things very

0:19:03 > 0:19:07quickly cement into truth, they fit a conspiracy theory and are

0:19:07 > 0:19:12constantly challenged if they don't, and it is just as likely that

0:19:12 > 0:19:23someone got the time wrong.Alex and Suzy, thanks for joining us.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25That's it for The Papers tonight.

0:19:35 > 0:19:39evening you can watch it later on BBC iPlayer.

0:19:39 > 0:19:40Thank you Susie and Alex.

0:19:40 > 0:19:50Goodbye.
