0:00:25 > 0:00:29Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be
0:00:29 > 0:00:30bringing us tomorrow.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32With me are the Associate Editor of The Times, Anne Ashworth
0:00:32 > 0:00:35and the Playwright and Writer in The New European, Bonnie Greer.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38The Sunday Telegraph claims that the Prime Minister has been has
0:00:38 > 0:00:41been warned by MPs not to retreat from a pledge to "take back
0:00:41 > 0:00:43control" of British laws from Brussels post Brexit.
0:00:43 > 0:00:46The Sunday Times meanwhile says that a member of the Labour Party has
0:00:46 > 0:00:48died after apparently taking his own life amid allegations
0:00:48 > 0:00:51of sexual misconduct.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53The Mail on Sunday alleges that there are links
0:00:53 > 0:00:56between Boris Johnson and Michael Gove's bid to persuade
0:00:56 > 0:00:59Theresa May to take a tougher stance on Brexit and a Russian Tycoon.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02And finally the Sunday Express reports that Meghan Markle
0:01:02 > 0:01:06is being guarded by royal protection officers as the Palace
0:01:06 > 0:01:10prepares to announce her engagement to Prince Harry.
0:01:17 > 0:01:22Let us begin our review today. The Mail on Sunday, it's all about
0:01:22 > 0:01:26Michael Gove and Boris Johnson, probably the two leading Brexiteers.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29They wrote a letter to the Prime Minister secretly trying to get her
0:01:29 > 0:01:33to take a tough stance on Brexit. What is this link, alleged link with
0:01:33 > 0:01:38the Russians?This story, it's a multi-layered story and you need to
0:01:38 > 0:01:43have a lot of background knowledge of who is who in think-tanks.And a
0:01:43 > 0:01:47lot of music too.In order to be able to understand it. The bare
0:01:47 > 0:01:53bones seem to be there are the think-tanks that seem to be having a
0:01:53 > 0:01:59huge amount of inNorwich Unions on Michael Gove and Boris Johnson,
0:01:59 > 0:02:05notes of secret meetings. But the institute is interesting because the
0:02:05 > 0:02:10people behind it who're two very rich brothers who made their money
0:02:10 > 0:02:16through Gazprom, the big massive Russian energy giant. It's alleged
0:02:16 > 0:02:25they have links to Putin.Johnson and Gove wrote a letter earlier on
0:02:25 > 0:02:29this month to Mrs May saying you have got to do this, that and the
0:02:29 > 0:02:34other and this story in the Mail on Sunday is saying, what they wanted
0:02:34 > 0:02:38in the letter is already happening, including £3 billion set aside in
0:02:38 > 0:02:44case we don't get a Brexit deal.A letter that was leaked to the papers
0:02:44 > 0:02:50so that we all knew about it.Yes. It was called, for your eyes only,
0:02:50 > 0:02:56Gavin Barwell.The Chief of Staff, yes.Full disloads sure, like they
0:02:56 > 0:03:03say in America - I wrote a piece for my paper, the New European. I used
0:03:03 > 0:03:10to have some sort of dealings with them a few years ago and it's an
0:03:10 > 0:03:15interesting place. I didn't quite know what it was about. It was at
0:03:15 > 0:03:19the time I was there very much interested in Boris when he was
0:03:19 > 0:03:27Mayor. They published a prosperity index which is apparently the thing
0:03:27 > 0:03:32they exist for so they gather this data in which they then describe who
0:03:32 > 0:03:37is the most prosperous. The whole thing is prosperity. Any time you
0:03:37 > 0:03:42see prosperity in relation to Brexit which David Davis has used, it's the
0:03:42 > 0:03:50buzz word. People are starting to wonder how much it's influencing.
0:03:50 > 0:03:55There is some kind of rumour. There is a big meeting out of Chequers or
0:03:55 > 0:04:01something. People trying to figure out what it is.There is no reason
0:04:01 > 0:04:06to think they're sinister, is there? Well, think-tanks would like to be
0:04:06 > 0:04:11thought of as sinister and powerful behind-the-scenes bodies but within
0:04:11 > 0:04:15this story, there is a claim that one of the members of staff is
0:04:15 > 0:04:19already the day facto Brexit czar which was one of the demands made in
0:04:19 > 0:04:25that.To be honest, when I heard David Davis say prosperity, I went
0:04:25 > 0:04:30bing, bing, bing, because that is one of their buzz words. I think we
0:04:30 > 0:04:34are entitled and good for the Mail on Sunday for bringing this up. We
0:04:34 > 0:04:38are entitled to know a bit more. If they had that kind of inflews, it
0:04:38 > 0:04:44doesn't mean it's bad. We just need to know.Transparency?Sure, that's
0:04:44 > 0:04:54all, just find out who they are. It's a good talking point.It's a
0:04:54 > 0:05:00good story.Who are they, yes, that is all.Let us move on to the Sunday
0:05:00 > 0:05:04Times and another disturbing story as we have had a lot of claims about
0:05:04 > 0:05:09sexual impropyrety, a story that has been rumbling on for a few weeks --
0:05:09 > 0:05:12impropriety. This is a suggestion that somebody who worked for the
0:05:12 > 0:05:16Labour Party had been accused of something and they've been
0:05:16 > 0:05:26suspended.
0:05:29 > 0:05:34It's alleged that this person worked for the Labour Party and has died.
0:05:34 > 0:05:41There are no other details. What worries me is that we are seeing
0:05:41 > 0:05:45these stories emerge. We don't know the background to this and there
0:05:45 > 0:05:50seems to be no apparatus in place to deal with this, no party seems to
0:05:50 > 0:05:56have a proper policy on how to deal with these accusations, how to deal
0:05:56 > 0:06:00with the aftermath and it seems to me that it's something they need to
0:06:00 > 0:06:06tackle soon because there are some politicians who still do not know
0:06:06 > 0:06:12what the accusations are that are being made against them. I think
0:06:12 > 0:06:16it's down to the leaders and the speaker to find some way to assemble
0:06:16 > 0:06:21this. The same things go on in America and France. It's a cultural
0:06:21 > 0:06:27shift. It's a very big culture, one of the biggest in my lifetime
0:06:27 > 0:06:31certainly, and it's happening. It's coming on and it's important that it
0:06:31 > 0:06:37happens. But what the politicians need to do and also businesses, they
0:06:37 > 0:06:41need to find a mechanism by which all of this can be gathered up,
0:06:41 > 0:06:47weighed up, can be understood. We don't understand it yet.Fees like
0:06:47 > 0:06:52they are racing to catch up, doesn't it? The leaders are discussing how
0:06:52 > 0:06:57to make it work? They need to move faster. In the United States, there
0:06:57 > 0:07:03are apparently some kind of slush fund that existed that was basically
0:07:03 > 0:07:06made from taxpayers' money to sort of pay. You know, we need to move
0:07:06 > 0:07:12this a lot faster and get some sort of a mechanism by which women and
0:07:12 > 0:07:16men who're making these accusations can come do, this and this whole
0:07:16 > 0:07:27thing can happen very quickly. There seem to be no guidelines as to how
0:07:27 > 0:07:36the system should be used. I mean, people seem to - I mean the divide
0:07:36 > 0:07:39between private and professional life seems to have been blurred and
0:07:39 > 0:07:43people are looking at things on the IT systems at their work and not
0:07:43 > 0:07:48realising all of that will be logged and there will be consequences
0:07:48 > 0:07:51because people in the IT department will be looking to see what is going
0:07:51 > 0:08:01on.It's quite shocking. I'm proud of the men and women starting to
0:08:01 > 0:08:04ring the alarm bells. Certainly when I was young, there was nowhere to
0:08:04 > 0:08:09two. You couldn't say anything. Now this is all starting to come out,
0:08:09 > 0:08:12it's happening faster than the system is able to cope with and
0:08:12 > 0:08:18that's what's happening.Let us move on inevitably to another story about
0:08:18 > 0:08:21Brexit and the evening cannot go by without one or two stories about
0:08:21 > 0:08:29that. The Sunday Telegraph.Whether anybody picks up a Sunday paper and
0:08:29 > 0:08:34thinks yippee, there's a Brexit story.I work in Westminster
0:08:34 > 0:08:38normally, even in our office there may be times when that may be
0:08:38 > 0:08:42voiced! This is a story, another warning to Theresa May as if she
0:08:42 > 0:08:46hasn't heard enough from people in her own party about not betraying
0:08:46 > 0:08:52the party over the European course which is something that many of them
0:08:52 > 0:08:56feelshire strongly about -- courts. Slightly baffling. I thought the
0:08:56 > 0:09:00European Court of Justice would remain only to deal with cases of
0:09:00 > 0:09:09the EU nationals after Brexit. Wasn't that going to be the
0:09:09 > 0:09:12restriction on the basis if we were able to offer that to the EU, that
0:09:12 > 0:09:18might be able to ease other parts.I think the problem is that you can't
0:09:18 > 0:09:23have a parallel court system, you can't have a parallel EU or a bunch
0:09:23 > 0:09:31of people who live here. Brexit people are saying the hardline, get
0:09:31 > 0:09:39rid of the whole thing and the EU is saying, you cannot have our citizens
0:09:39 > 0:09:44living in your country and there are the only EU citizens who're not
0:09:44 > 0:09:49under EU court, that is off, it can't happen, it's not going to
0:09:49 > 0:09:54happen. The hardlines are saying, get this court out of the country.
0:09:54 > 0:10:02That's where she is. Brussels has been very, very precise. There
0:10:02 > 0:10:06cannot be a parallel EU, a market where there is no freedom of
0:10:06 > 0:10:10movement, a group of citizens in the EU who're not under the court. You
0:10:10 > 0:10:15make another level of EU citizenship. They don't want that.
0:10:15 > 0:10:20She's got to figure out how to navigate this against people say who
0:10:20 > 0:10:27want it all out of here.I wonder if sometimes the European Court of
0:10:27 > 0:10:32Justice doesn't get confused with the European Court of Human Rights.
0:10:32 > 0:10:37It all gets confused. Also I would have thought that the EU story today
0:10:37 > 0:10:46would have been Ireland.Yes.The idea that there might be in the
0:10:46 > 0:10:48republic an election before Christmas. I wanted to read more
0:10:48 > 0:10:54about that.But this is a Telegraph doing whistle and it's important for
0:10:54 > 0:10:58them to keep, for their readers to keep this kind of thing forward
0:10:58 > 0:11:02because Ireland is extremely complicated. So if you do... Well
0:11:02 > 0:11:07it's not really, but if you do the bang, bang, bang about the courts,
0:11:07 > 0:11:12it reminds them of what the hardline Brexiteers say. We'll move on from
0:11:12 > 0:11:15Brexit. I know you are very sad about that! Let's talk about
0:11:15 > 0:11:19productivity. This in the Budget was one of the big problems with the
0:11:19 > 0:11:23British economy and has been for a long time. This seems to suggest
0:11:23 > 0:11:29there might be the answer. What is the problemWell, it's not that we
0:11:29 > 0:11:33don't have good enough technology, no, it's because we spend too much
0:11:33 > 0:11:38time at our desk looking to see if we've got a WhatsApp message or a
0:11:38 > 0:11:43text or updating our status on Facebook or going on Twitter. That
0:11:43 > 0:11:53is what is happening, our minds are not on our work. You are distracted?
0:11:53 > 0:11:58Yes.I get tired of people beating up on the British worker, I don't
0:11:58 > 0:12:02buy this at all. I think people work very, very hard. What is going on
0:12:02 > 0:12:06now, we are having a revolution in technology. A lot of things are
0:12:06 > 0:12:11shifting. We are having different things to indicate productivity. We
0:12:11 > 0:12:15don't know the answers to this yet. I think people work very, very hard
0:12:15 > 0:12:20and I wish that we had a system whereby the new technology can be
0:12:20 > 0:12:27sort of measured up and captured. The system is not up to snuff yet.
0:12:27 > 0:12:32People work hard. That is wrong. It is quite interesting, there is just
0:12:32 > 0:12:38this whole kind of mystery as to why our productivity remains low.I
0:12:38 > 0:12:42think the measure isn't there yet and I would love to see someone,
0:12:42 > 0:12:46some science geek or whatever come up with a way to measure how people
0:12:46 > 0:12:50are working because I think they are working very hard.I wonder if we
0:12:50 > 0:12:54have become a look-down society. You know when you are on the train, the
0:12:54 > 0:12:57tube in the morning, you want to say, take your eyes off that phone
0:12:57 > 0:13:04and see the world.Talk to the person next to you!Yes. I wonder
0:13:04 > 0:13:07whether this is a broader problem, maybe it's stopping collaboration at
0:13:07 > 0:13:14work. I think we need to look at productivity...It's no more
0:13:14 > 0:13:19different than Paris or New York. I think people shouldn't do this. This
0:13:19 > 0:13:27is a lot more complicated.Let us move on because we can't end Without
0:13:27 > 0:13:35a Royal story. Engagement expected any day. Theresa May cleared her
0:13:35 > 0:13:39diary on Thursday because it was expected to happen and it hasn't.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42Americans would have killed her if that news came out on Thanksgiving.
0:13:42 > 0:13:46That is why!Yes, that is what happened. She's American, there is
0:13:46 > 0:13:51no way that this was twoing to happen on Thanksgiving. You mean
0:13:51 > 0:13:55they've all got too much to do, to eat?No, this is a down news day. If
0:13:55 > 0:14:02this came out on a down news day, this country would never have been
0:14:02 > 0:14:07forgiven so I think they pushed it. That is what happened. It will give
0:14:07 > 0:14:15the nation's spirit a lift. I'm quite excited about it. I'll want to
0:14:15 > 0:14:18read the details and I'll get excited about the dress. I think
0:14:18 > 0:14:22it's what we need. Also, she is going to be a new spirit in the
0:14:22 > 0:14:27Royal Family. I do really think that we are looking at the moment for
0:14:27 > 0:14:36things to...
0:14:43 > 0:14:49This will be the one we like. We like this guy. We like Harry. We
0:14:49 > 0:14:54like a good news story.Every country needs the lift.We must
0:14:54 > 0:14:59leave it there now. That is it for the papers this hour, thank you to
0:14:59 > 0:15:05Anne and Bonnie. They'll both be back at 11. 30 and we'll do it all
0:15:05 > 0:15:16over again. Coming up next, Meet the Author.
