0:00:20 > 0:00:23Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be

0:00:23 > 0:00:24bringing us tomorrow.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26With me are Martin Bentham, Home Affairs Editor

0:00:26 > 0:00:29at the London Evening Standard and Victoria Murphy,

0:00:29 > 0:00:32who's Royal Correspondent at the Daily Mirror.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35There's your clue as to what is on the front pages!

0:00:35 > 0:00:39Tomorrow's

0:00:39 > 0:00:40front pages, starting with...

0:00:40 > 0:00:44The 'i' which has a picture of Prince Harry and and his fiancee,

0:00:44 > 0:00:45the American actress Meghan Markle who announced

0:00:45 > 0:00:46their engagement earlier today.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48The happy couple also makes the Metro's front page,

0:00:48 > 0:00:51with a close up of the engagement ring which is decorated

0:00:51 > 0:00:53with diamonds from Princess Diana's collection.

0:00:53 > 0:00:58The Telegraph reports how the Queen's corgis took to Ms Markle

0:00:58 > 0:01:00to Ms Markle straightaway, according to Prince Harry.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03The FT leads with how the price of the Bitcoin hit

0:01:03 > 0:01:05a record high today, with the value of the virtual

0:01:05 > 0:01:08currency rising more than 850% since the beginning of the year.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12The Daily Express goes with the royal engagement,

0:01:12 > 0:01:16and comments from Harry that the stars were aligned

0:01:16 > 0:01:19when he met Meghan.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22The Mirror reports how Prince Harry had proposed earlier this month

0:01:22 > 0:01:24at his home in Kensington Palace as the couple were

0:01:24 > 0:01:30making roast chicken.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33The Brexit secretary David Davis could be in contempt of Parliament

0:01:33 > 0:01:38by refusing to hand over in their entirety the impact assessments on

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Brexit, according to The Guardian newspaper. The Times details

0:01:42 > 0:01:44accusations that some of Jeremy Corbyn's left-wing supporters are

0:01:44 > 0:01:47facing for carrying out what the paper calls an 'aggressive purge' of

0:01:47 > 0:01:56centrist local councillors. So, there's only really one story today,

0:01:56 > 0:02:01as we have been reporting today, the engagement, there had been a lot of

0:02:01 > 0:02:05speculation about it, we didn't know when it was coming, Victoria may

0:02:05 > 0:02:09have known more! That engagement today, Prince Harry and Meghan

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Markle will be married in the spring. It says on the front page of

0:02:13 > 0:02:18the i newspaper, "Bride-to-be is divorced American actress who will

0:02:18 > 0:02:23be the first mixed-race member of the Royal family". The Queen says

0:02:23 > 0:02:27that she is delighted. What do you think of it all, are you excited at

0:02:27 > 0:02:33the prospect of a royal wedding? It is a big new state, and the fact

0:02:33 > 0:02:37that she is very different, she comes from America and is divorced,

0:02:37 > 0:02:43she is an actress, and she has a lot of personality, clearly, it makes it

0:02:43 > 0:02:46quite an interesting and eye-catching event for the public.

0:02:46 > 0:02:51The fact that Prince Harry has been able to choose freely the person he

0:02:51 > 0:02:55wants, that is the defining thing. I suppose if you think about his

0:02:55 > 0:02:59father, there was a lot of pressure on him at the time 30 years ago to

0:02:59 > 0:03:04choose someone from the right background. It's a good thing that

0:03:04 > 0:03:09Harry can choose the person he wants to be with and that she can do the

0:03:09 > 0:03:14same.Yes, there is no question that this is a love match, you only had

0:03:14 > 0:03:19to watch that interview today and you can see how they look at each

0:03:19 > 0:03:22other... Why make you could feel it coming through the television. They

0:03:22 > 0:03:35are clearly completely in love. They said early on that they were

0:03:35 > 0:03:40completely in love, he said she knew that she was the one from the moment

0:03:40 > 0:03:46that he met her. And I think it reflects the fact that they have

0:03:46 > 0:03:51been caught up in this whirlwind, and they are completely besotted.

0:03:51 > 0:03:58You can see that in their faces. And in the interview, you cannot help

0:03:58 > 0:04:02but compare and contrast it with previous interviews, whether it was

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Charles and Diana or William and Kate, that this time Megan was doing

0:04:05 > 0:04:12most of the talking? -- but this time Meghan was doing most of the

0:04:12 > 0:04:17talking?She is with the UN, she is an actress and so one but she said

0:04:17 > 0:04:22despite that background she wasn't quite used to the attention of being

0:04:22 > 0:04:27a royal girlfriend and now a royal bride-to-be. Clearly she is

0:04:27 > 0:04:30comfortable in talking in public. Prince Harry himself has also spoken

0:04:30 > 0:04:37in public quite a bit, probably more than some previous royal family

0:04:37 > 0:04:40members. They are both quite comfortable in that environment and

0:04:40 > 0:04:45the interview was very relaxed with some nice anecdotes. And she was

0:04:45 > 0:04:50incredibly relaxed, I thought. So comfortable and so open and free in

0:04:50 > 0:04:55how they spoke about their relationship as well. You can

0:04:55 > 0:04:58contrast it with previous interviews, and the most obvious

0:04:58 > 0:05:03comparison is William and Kate's interview. At the time there was

0:05:03 > 0:05:06some handholding from William that you felt that Megan was very

0:05:06 > 0:05:14accomplished in speaking. And the ring... It was designed by Prince

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Harry himself, apparently. Tell us some of those details about the

0:05:17 > 0:05:24diamonds?We found out today, when Meghan appeared wearing the ring,

0:05:24 > 0:05:31when she came out, Harry designed the ring and had it made by one of

0:05:31 > 0:05:35the jewellers which works with the Queen, he chose three diamonds the

0:05:35 > 0:05:40Centre Diamond is from Botswana, a place where they have holidayed

0:05:40 > 0:05:45together, it's very close to Harry's heart, he calls it his second home

0:05:45 > 0:05:49and the two diamonds either side were from Princess Diana's Private

0:05:49 > 0:05:57collection.They spoke about her, he made the point that this is the kind

0:05:57 > 0:06:02of occasion where he misses having his mum around. You would, if your

0:06:02 > 0:06:06parents are at an engagement, it's what you would like to have but what

0:06:06 > 0:06:11is interesting is they calculated the engagement ring is worth

0:06:11 > 0:06:16£200,000... I'm not sure how they have done that.At least, I'm sure!

0:06:16 > 0:06:21It's very difficult to put a price on their own's diamonds!And they

0:06:21 > 0:06:29were roasting a chicken!I love that fact!But also he almost couldn't

0:06:29 > 0:06:38finish... Having plucked up the courage to do it...It's

0:06:38 > 0:06:40interesting, the proposal was clearly low-key and relaxed, which

0:06:40 > 0:06:48is what we have said, they are very relaxed, it was premeditated but not

0:06:48 > 0:06:55in a fancy way. Webb he said that they had dates in the cottage, they

0:06:55 > 0:07:00didn't want everyone looking at them outside so they did things in

0:07:00 > 0:07:04reverse. The Daily Mirror with that quote from Prince Harry, she tripped

0:07:04 > 0:07:08and fell into my life...And those details about the roast chicken

0:07:08 > 0:07:12which everybody seems to like quite a lot here. Can she carve out a role

0:07:12 > 0:07:20for herself? She is slightly older than Princess Diana was when she

0:07:20 > 0:07:25became a princess, she is 36 and has done a lot of charity work, can she

0:07:25 > 0:07:31carry on that kind of thing?Prince Harry does his own Invictus Games,

0:07:31 > 0:07:38all that kind of work. I think they do both believe in doing things

0:07:38 > 0:07:43above and beyond their royal duties. Clearly they will do more royal

0:07:43 > 0:07:46duties, he spoke that he felt that she would be happy in that role. And

0:07:46 > 0:07:53so on. It's essential, really, for her, that she continues what she is

0:07:53 > 0:07:59doing and there is a lot of acceptance among everyone connected

0:07:59 > 0:08:05that she is an independent person. That is part of her attraction. She

0:08:05 > 0:08:11is giving up the acting, she said that today, she sees this as a new

0:08:11 > 0:08:15chapter. Part of the Royal 's work is charity work. In the sense that

0:08:15 > 0:08:19doing the charity work isn't a departure from royal duties but part

0:08:19 > 0:08:23of the same thing. She seemed excited about taking that on. They

0:08:23 > 0:08:28will be a real tour de force on the public stage because they are both

0:08:28 > 0:08:32so genuinely passionate. And you could tell that they felt that as

0:08:32 > 0:08:38seeking the could further those charitable causes -- they felt that

0:08:38 > 0:08:45as a team. They talked about the Commonwealth in particular.Some

0:08:45 > 0:08:50people would be sceptical about the royal family but the fact of the

0:08:50 > 0:08:55matter is that they have an impact. They can open doors, they can create

0:08:55 > 0:09:00good things, in places all around the world. Whether you believe it or

0:09:00 > 0:09:06not, that is the reality. The royal presence, both of them, they can do

0:09:06 > 0:09:11a lot of good and she can do that. And The Guardian newspaper, they

0:09:11 > 0:09:17have a picture on the front, a comment piece, about the changing

0:09:17 > 0:09:20faces of the UK as shoot towards race, Meghan Markle is of mixed

0:09:20 > 0:09:28race. They say that even 20 years ago, this probably would not have

0:09:28 > 0:09:32been acceptable. Victoria, do you think that is true?Well there's not

0:09:32 > 0:09:37really the president to say it is possible and now there is, it's

0:09:37 > 0:09:41obviously factually correct that she would be the first mixed-race person

0:09:41 > 0:09:46to marry into the royal family, family was made up of white European

0:09:46 > 0:09:51aristocrats for generations and some would say that Britain is

0:09:51 > 0:09:55increasingly multicultural and the Royal family has not reflected that,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57this is a milestone. It was interesting in the interview, they

0:09:57 > 0:10:03were asked, do you think that he represents something here? The open

0:10:03 > 0:10:06question that gave them the opportunity to say, actually, we

0:10:06 > 0:10:11think we are in this way... They chose not to do that and it shows

0:10:11 > 0:10:15for them that this is not something they want to be seen to be making a

0:10:15 > 0:10:22thing off because it is not a thing. That wasn't the reason...Exactly.

0:10:22 > 0:10:27This wedding, as it will be, is more that he can choose someone

0:10:27 > 0:10:32completely freely. It is more of a social thing, then previously, there

0:10:32 > 0:10:35was the social group where previously members of the Royal

0:10:35 > 0:10:41family could choose from here, as it happened, they would have been white

0:10:41 > 0:10:45Europeans from aristocratic families. That would have been

0:10:45 > 0:10:50defining. That's the biggest change and as it happens, she is from a

0:10:50 > 0:10:53mixed-race background. It's a perfectly good thing and so on. It

0:10:53 > 0:10:57shouldn't be the defining thing. What should be a defining thing is

0:10:57 > 0:11:00that the Royal family are free to choose who they want to marry

0:11:00 > 0:11:07without constraints. And a quick look at the corgis, "The corgis took

0:11:07 > 0:11:12to her straightaway". Prince Harry said this, he has had them barking

0:11:12 > 0:11:16at him for years, but she walks in and they are happy about the whole

0:11:16 > 0:11:25thing.A very good sign! And that's the best photo, presented in the

0:11:25 > 0:11:30best way.I did a lot of tweeting as things were announced and throughout

0:11:30 > 0:11:34I was tweeting some of those lines coming out. This thing about the

0:11:34 > 0:11:46corgis, that is what has been picked up on the most! And one more story

0:11:46 > 0:11:50before we go back to The Guardian newspaper, some news about Brexit,

0:11:50 > 0:11:56and the impact reports. This vote in parliament, that the government had

0:11:56 > 0:12:00to hand over these documents buried somewhere in Whitehall, it turns out

0:12:00 > 0:12:08they have handed over something that MPs are not happy with?It will not

0:12:08 > 0:12:13contain things market sensitive... Or Romilly embarrassing to the

0:12:13 > 0:12:17government!You sometimes get these things and they are slightly

0:12:17 > 0:12:24spurious arguments, but I certainly think of things are published, as

0:12:24 > 0:12:27much information as possible should be available for Parliament to

0:12:27 > 0:12:33consider and it seems regrettable that that is not going to be the

0:12:33 > 0:12:36case.David Davis could be in contempt of the house can he could

0:12:36 > 0:12:41be dragged before the speaker if he is not careful. They are not happy

0:12:41 > 0:12:47with that, and one final story, on the front of the Financial Times,

0:12:47 > 0:12:58about easyJet reporting a 44.5% gender pay gap?Yes, it's

0:12:58 > 0:13:02interesting -- 40 5.5% gender pay gap. This is a particularly bad one,

0:13:02 > 0:13:07much worse than the national average, and I think it's

0:13:07 > 0:13:11interesting, that even for a company run by a woman, they have this big

0:13:11 > 0:13:18gap. We were looking at why it might be the case, and it's because they

0:13:18 > 0:13:23have more female ones, basically. What is interesting about the pay

0:13:23 > 0:13:27gap reporting is it forces ministers to address this. Who and where we

0:13:27 > 0:13:34are employing. It's opening up the opportunity from the start for more

0:13:34 > 0:13:37women to go into it, being encouraged and thinking it is

0:13:37 > 0:13:40something for them. And companies feeling it is something they should

0:13:40 > 0:13:45do. That's what gender gap reporting would encourage people to do.Those

0:13:45 > 0:13:51are some stories that made it into the newspapers! No doubt what is

0:13:51 > 0:13:54dominating, pictures everywhere of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. We

0:13:54 > 0:13:58have more details about the wedding tomorrow. You will be waiting for

0:13:58 > 0:14:03that. It's another busy day for you, Victoria. That's all for tonight,

0:14:03 > 0:14:07don't forget you can see the front pages online. It is all there for

0:14:07 > 0:14:18you, seven days a week, on the website.

0:14:19 > 0:14:20If you miss the programme any

0:14:20 > 0:14:22evening you can watch it later on BBC iPlayer

0:14:22 > 0:14:23. Coming up next, it's time
