0:00:00 > 0:00:03up in a moment here on BBC News it is the Papers. Thanks for watching.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be
0:00:18 > 0:00:19bringing us tomorrow.
0:00:19 > 0:00:21With me are John Rentoul, who's Chief Political Commentator
0:00:21 > 0:00:23at The Independent, and Lucy Fisher, Senior Political Correspondent
0:00:24 > 0:00:27at The Times.
0:00:27 > 0:00:33Tomorrow's front pages...
0:00:33 > 0:00:36Starting with the Financial Times which leads with the new leader in
0:00:36 > 0:00:40South Africa at seeing his election threatens Jacob Zuma's grip on
0:00:40 > 0:00:44power. The Times has the same story which also carries a picture of
0:00:44 > 0:00:50today's train crash in the US. The Guardian carries a warning from the
0:00:50 > 0:00:53EU's chief Brexit negotiator saying Britain cannot expect a special deal
0:00:53 > 0:00:56for the City of London as Theresa May hopes to begin talks on the
0:00:56 > 0:01:01trade agreement. The ISS the NHS is facing a record number of staff
0:01:01 > 0:01:07vacancies. The Metro highlights an admission that women are working for
0:01:07 > 0:01:11the Government are being paid up to nearly 17% less than their male
0:01:11 > 0:01:17colleagues. The Daily Express reports scientific research that
0:01:17 > 0:01:21suggests an active social life will the risk of developing diabetes. The
0:01:21 > 0:01:27daily Mirror says up to 3200 Toys "R" Us staff are facing the sack
0:01:27 > 0:01:32over Christmas with business close to collapse. And the sun says the
0:01:32 > 0:01:37Royal Navy's new £3.1 billion aircraft carrier has a massive leak.
0:01:37 > 0:01:42The Navy have told them tonight it is scheduled for repair and sea
0:01:42 > 0:01:51trials programme will not be affected. Let's begin and start with
0:01:51 > 0:01:56the story on the front page of the Metro about Whitehall's gender pay
0:01:56 > 0:01:59gap exposed. Lots of talk at the BBC about the gender pay gap, what's
0:01:59 > 0:02:05that saying about Whitehall? There is an 11% gender pay gap across
0:02:05 > 0:02:08Whitehall concentrated more particularly in some departments,
0:02:08 > 0:02:13transport is the worst with 17% gap in salaries, even worse with
0:02:13 > 0:02:19bonuses, 25% higher for men. It breaks my heart and makes me feel
0:02:19 > 0:02:22frustrated and annoyed that yet again we are having to talk about
0:02:22 > 0:02:27the situation, but it is a good thing the data is being reported and
0:02:27 > 0:02:32hopefully bringing back into the light will change things. There is a
0:02:32 > 0:02:36quote from somebody from the Fawcett Society which campaigns for women's
0:02:36 > 0:02:39rights saying that women are overrepresented in lower paid civil
0:02:39 > 0:02:45service jobs and underrepresented... That is the main explanations of the
0:02:45 > 0:02:48gap. It is not so much women are being paid less for doing the same
0:02:48 > 0:02:54sort of jobs, it is that they tend to have the less well-paid job. I'd
0:02:54 > 0:02:59remember the Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Heywood was proud of the fact
0:02:59 > 0:03:02that half of all Whitehall departments had a female permanent
0:03:02 > 0:03:09secretary. I think it has fallen back since then. Some progress has
0:03:09 > 0:03:16been made recently in breaking into the top jobs. For women. But there
0:03:16 > 0:03:20hasn't been a woman Cabinet Secretary yet.No, no, indeed. Let's
0:03:20 > 0:03:24move onto the front page of the Guardian, they've got an interview
0:03:24 > 0:03:30with the EU's Brexit negotiator and he's dropped a bit of a grenade on
0:03:30 > 0:03:39an important day for Theresa May. Theresa May has hosted the first
0:03:39 > 0:03:42Brexit War committee, ten Key Cabinet ministers have spoke about
0:03:42 > 0:03:47their vision for the trade deal and they hope the UK can get with the
0:03:47 > 0:03:51EU. Michel Barnier have come out and said that under no circumstances is
0:03:51 > 0:03:56the UK going to get financial services as a bolt on to a trade
0:03:56 > 0:04:00deal, services make up 80% of the UK's economy. Just having free trade
0:04:00 > 0:04:05and goods is no good for us. I think we need to take his point of view
0:04:05 > 0:04:10with a pinch of salt. The EU 27 member states at the beginning of
0:04:10 > 0:04:14this process are speaking about what they want, he is going and hard
0:04:14 > 0:04:17which is to be expected. The mood music I am hearing coming out of
0:04:17 > 0:04:23Brussels is that there is a lot of concern among the EU 27 that the UK
0:04:23 > 0:04:30if it was cast adrift and have the ability to use state aid, that could
0:04:30 > 0:04:33be pretty disastrous for some of the sectors like the rest of the EU.
0:04:33 > 0:04:39There will be more compromised than is being suggested here.Absolutely.
0:04:39 > 0:04:44If this is a negotiation, he's setting out his position, David
0:04:44 > 0:04:48Davis has set out the UK position which is that they want a Canada
0:04:48 > 0:04:53deal, which is mostly goods, and we want to add things to that. Michel
0:04:53 > 0:04:58Barnier says you can add justice on defence and criminal cooperation,
0:04:58 > 0:05:05but you can't add financial services. We will see about that. We
0:05:05 > 0:05:09British do like to beat ourselves up about what a terrible negotiating
0:05:09 > 0:05:14position we have. It is a weak position. But Theresa May achieved a
0:05:14 > 0:05:18lot in the first stage of the negotiations and let's wait and see
0:05:18 > 0:05:23what compromise can be reached on this.Let's go on to the Financial
0:05:23 > 0:05:33Times which has Cyril Ramaphosa's victory in the ANC election, the ANC
0:05:33 > 0:05:40leadership election today. Lucy Fisher, the Financial Times
0:05:40 > 0:05:44concentrates on the threat that he now poses to Jacob Zuma and Jacob
0:05:44 > 0:05:50Zuma's position. That's right. He ran against Jacob Zuma's ex-wife,
0:05:50 > 0:05:54the candidate that Jacob Zuma supporters, an interesting dynamic.
0:05:54 > 0:05:59This is the story I am fascinated by! Fancy having your ex-wife as
0:05:59 > 0:06:07your candidate to succeed you.But the paper suggests that Jacob Zuma
0:06:07 > 0:06:12might then have expected a certain immunity from legal follow-ups given
0:06:12 > 0:06:18various corruption...It depends how he gets on with his ex-wife.And
0:06:18 > 0:06:22whether he has dote on her if she tries to sink him, maybe he will try
0:06:22 > 0:06:28and think her. It is interesting the way this news Cyril Ramaphosa
0:06:28 > 0:06:35winning the presidency today, cheers in the conference call, but not an
0:06:35 > 0:06:41entirely clear-cut picture because Jacob Zuma's allies were elected as
0:06:41 > 0:06:44deputy president and Secretary General of the part are also Jacob
0:06:44 > 0:06:50Zuma allies. The civil war is going to go on. I should call it civil
0:06:50 > 0:06:54war, because there has been violence is another pair in the past, but the
0:06:54 > 0:07:02ANC is bitterly divided and this was a very divisive contest. Only one by
0:07:02 > 0:07:112500 votes to 2200 5000. It was very close. After a lot of recount and so
0:07:11 > 0:07:17one. This is obviously not going to be the end of the story.Let's go
0:07:17 > 0:07:20onto the front page of the Independent which has got that
0:07:20 > 0:07:25startling image from the united states of this disaster which is
0:07:25 > 0:07:29still unfolding. We know there have been fatalities but we don't know
0:07:29 > 0:07:35how many yet.Six is the latest figure that I've seen, but possibly
0:07:35 > 0:07:40more. A train coming off the tracks at 80 miles an hour is not good. If
0:07:40 > 0:07:45it's on a bridge over a motorway, that's even worse. Those pictures
0:07:45 > 0:07:52look horrible, don't they?Donald Trump's reaction telling his first
0:07:52 > 0:07:58impulse was to tweet about how this dreadful carnage was relevant to
0:07:58 > 0:08:05infrastructure policies he's trying push through. He followed up with a
0:08:05 > 0:08:08tweet expressing his somebody's after there was backlash about that
0:08:08 > 0:08:12saying that his thoughts and prayers were with the victims. Unsurprising
0:08:12 > 0:08:17the US president has tried to capitalise on this tragedy.Another
0:08:17 > 0:08:22interesting feature about it is this was the first passenger train to go
0:08:22 > 0:08:27along this line. It was the first joining it was taking. The inaugural
0:08:27 > 0:08:31run of the route between Seattle and Portland down the West Coast.
0:08:31 > 0:08:38Terribly sad scenes. The other story on the front page of the
0:08:38 > 0:08:43Independent, NHS jobs crisis leaves 100,000 reels vacant.This is a
0:08:43 > 0:08:46reminder that one of the big domestic stories of the next couple
0:08:46 > 0:08:51of years properly is going to be the state of the NHS and whether it can
0:08:51 > 0:08:58be turned around. The NHS have been under such a squeeze for so long.
0:08:58 > 0:09:03They are spending more in real terms on the NHS every year, but the rate
0:09:03 > 0:09:09of increase is nothing like it was under new Labour and the strain is
0:09:09 > 0:09:13beginning to tell. That's going to be a political problem for the
0:09:13 > 0:09:17Government.It is an extraordinary figure, 100,000 reels. Let's go to
0:09:17 > 0:09:23the front page of the daily Mirror. Toys "R" Us on the brink. A cheerful
0:09:23 > 0:09:33Christmas story!
0:09:33 > 0:09:39My first boss warned me that. This is a new category, it is sad on the
0:09:39 > 0:09:43eve of Christmas that a toy company like Toys "R" Us would be making
0:09:43 > 0:09:49profit, it turns out it is £500,000 in debt. After all the money I have
0:09:49 > 0:09:55spent there! You echo my sentiment entirely! But presumably this is
0:09:55 > 0:10:01again online trading...I remember moving to the Toys "R" Us website
0:10:01 > 0:10:07many years ago after going to the actual shops and the website wasn't
0:10:07 > 0:10:13great. There is just so much competition. You can buy toys from
0:10:13 > 0:10:19Amazon. We are not allowed to mention other brands, are we! Online
0:10:19 > 0:10:23shopping is a highly competitive business and Toys "R" Us have
0:10:23 > 0:10:25obviously failed to take their competitive advantage into the
0:10:25 > 0:10:31online world.I am just really quite devastated that 3200 employees are
0:10:31 > 0:10:37facing the sack just before Christmas. It is sad. It is very sad
0:10:37 > 0:10:41indeed. The front page of the times has a different sort of story,
0:10:41 > 0:10:47loosely linked to children. White children get a taste for
0:10:47 > 0:10:53punishment...Lucy knows all about the Times stories. This is an
0:10:53 > 0:10:59interesting story, it is the age at which you derive some sort of
0:10:59 > 0:11:02pleasure from seeing others punished. Scientists also think it's
0:11:02 > 0:11:06the age at which you have a sense of fair play coming into practice.
0:11:06 > 0:11:08They've carried out experiments with children were children have been
0:11:08 > 0:11:13able to sacrifice a token for which they have been given a sticker in
0:11:13 > 0:11:18order to see a bad puppet being beaten up. It is a rather convoluted
0:11:18 > 0:11:25experiment! There is a moral in there somewhere. It is amazing that
0:11:25 > 0:11:30the whole nation's schools are run on the basis children want to have
0:11:30 > 0:11:35stickers.But they might just want to look at puppets. Children like to
0:11:35 > 0:11:40pull legs of spiders, they can be quite cruel. I'm surprised to see
0:11:40 > 0:11:45sadists at six years old.Six years old is quite late. For a sense of
0:11:45 > 0:11:50fair play and justice, I would imagine three-year-old can scream
0:11:50 > 0:11:56that things aren't fair. There you go.It's three times, it must be
0:11:56 > 0:12:01true. Let's go to the front page of the express which has perhaps my
0:12:01 > 0:12:05favourite headline of the year, socialising can beat diabetes.
0:12:05 > 0:12:15Canet? A social life low the risk of developing diabetes. -- lowers the
0:12:15 > 0:12:19risk. I will have to get some people rant over Christmas. It makes sense
0:12:19 > 0:12:23to me in a certain way, you are going out, you are in a bit more
0:12:23 > 0:12:28active. If you enjoy fruit in a convivial way with friends, you are
0:12:28 > 0:12:31possibly going to be posing a bit more, being a bit more moderate for
0:12:31 > 0:12:36the sake of manners, a better appearance rather than sort of... I
0:12:36 > 0:12:40can be a bit more greedy if I'm sitting on my couch with my takeaway
0:12:40 > 0:12:44pizza.There is some common sense in that. You don't look convinced,
0:12:44 > 0:12:52John?I'm wondering about causation and correlation, whether if you are
0:12:52 > 0:12:56healthy you are more likely to have an active social life anyway. I
0:12:56 > 0:13:04haven't read the small print of the science. It is in the journal BMC
0:13:04 > 0:13:08Public health whatever that is. I haven't had a chance to study it in
0:13:08 > 0:13:12detail.You don't look like you're going to.I am very taken by the
0:13:12 > 0:13:19picture... I am very puzzled by why the Duchess of Cambridge, what is
0:13:19 > 0:13:19the
0:13:19 > 0:13:20the Duchess of Cambridge, what is the new look? She looks exactly the
0:13:20 > 0:13:24same as before.You haven't been paying attention.
0:13:24 > 0:13:25That's it for The Papers tonight.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28Don't forget you can see the front pages of the papers online
0:13:28 > 0:13:30on the BBC News website. pages of the papers online
0:13:30 > 0:13:34It's all there for you - seven days a week at bbc.co.uk/papers,
0:13:34 > 0:13:37and if you miss the programme any evening, you can watch it
0:13:37 > 0:13:39later on BBC iPlayer.
0:13:39 > 0:13:41Thank you, John Rentoul and Lucy Fisher.
0:13:41 > 0:13:48Goodbye.
