0:00:00 > 0:00:09by combating terrorism at home and abroad.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be

0:00:20 > 0:00:21bringing us tomorrow.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24With me are the Evening Standard columnist Rosamund Urwin

0:00:24 > 0:00:32and the Telegraph's women's editor, Claire Cohen.

0:00:32 > 0:00:38I've let the side down with my lack of sparkle and my drug choice of

0:00:38 > 0:00:41attire, I apologise -- drab choice.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43Tomorrow's front pages.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46The Observer reports that children from poor families are more likely

0:00:46 > 0:00:48to need emergency treatment for conditions like asthma

0:00:48 > 0:00:50and diabetes compared to their wealthier counterparts.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52The Sunday Times says that Theresa May will abandon a manifesto

0:00:52 > 0:00:55pledge to overturn the ban on fox hunting in the new year.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59The Mail on Sunday details how the British Army is spending

0:00:59 > 0:01:01millions of pounds of taxpayers' money to scrap its 'Be

0:01:01 > 0:01:03the Best' motto, because of fears it's elitist.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Britain's christmas food and drink exports

0:01:05 > 0:01:08are at all time high according to the Sunday Express, with Brexit

0:01:08 > 0:01:09a main catalyst, the paper says.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Staying with Brexit - the Sunday Telegraph reports how

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Boris Johnson and Michael Gove have criticised HMRC for placing large

0:01:14 > 0:01:18tax bills on individuals who donated to the Leave campaign.

0:01:18 > 0:01:25We will start with the help story on the Observer, huge health gap

0:01:25 > 0:01:29revealed between rich and poor, where is the research coming from?

0:01:29 > 0:01:33From the Nuffield trust, the latest in a series of NHS in crisis stories

0:01:33 > 0:01:40that appear this time of year, and this is the child poverty gap

0:01:40 > 0:01:42increasing, children from poor families more likely to spend time

0:01:42 > 0:01:48in A&E and it lists asthma and diabetes as two of the reasons and

0:01:48 > 0:01:51they are 70% more likely to appear in acts compared with their less

0:01:51 > 0:01:57deprived counterparts. Shocking numbers. It is the earlier years of

0:01:57 > 0:02:00your life rather than life expectancy which we have reported

0:02:00 > 0:02:05many times. One of the things which comes out this asthma and much of

0:02:05 > 0:02:08that is related to air pollution and the quality of the homes in which

0:02:08 > 0:02:12people are living and how close they are to main roads. There have been a

0:02:12 > 0:02:19number of studies that show, in London, for example, if you live in

0:02:19 > 0:02:23Tower Hamlets you are much more likely to suffer from asthma

0:02:23 > 0:02:27compared to a richer borough, and your score is more likely to be

0:02:27 > 0:02:33closer to main roads and so is your home -- your school. So kids are

0:02:33 > 0:02:35playing in the playground and breathing in horrible fumes. There

0:02:35 > 0:02:42are other lifestyle elements to come into this, but this sets out the gap

0:02:42 > 0:02:49that is quite shocking. Something that needs to be addressed.Another

0:02:49 > 0:02:54example of the inequality gap that apparently seems to be growing. The

0:02:54 > 0:02:58almost feels like the NHS is going backwards when it comes to child

0:02:58 > 0:03:00health, there is a tag line on the front page of the Observer story,

0:03:00 > 0:03:05quoting a doctor saying he sees Ricketts regularly, and we have had

0:03:05 > 0:03:10stories about scarlet fever coming back and there was a whooping cough

0:03:10 > 0:03:12epidemic if it feels like we're going back to a semi-Victorian age

0:03:12 > 0:03:19when it comes to child health. Ricketts should not be seen in this

0:03:19 > 0:03:22country, although you do get this in the developed world. It should not

0:03:22 > 0:03:32be happening in Britain.Debuchy plotted to discredit me -- deputy

0:03:32 > 0:03:39PM's allies parted to discredit me, this is relating to the Damian Green

0:03:39 > 0:03:45story.What is said here, some of the material that was submitted to

0:03:45 > 0:03:48the white or inquiry which led to the sacking of Damian Green last

0:03:48 > 0:03:54week -- Whitehall inquiry. There had been negative supporters about her,

0:03:54 > 0:04:01and that actually was submitted to the charge of the inquiry, the

0:04:01 > 0:04:07evidence is that they were submitting things which were to

0:04:07 > 0:04:13discredit her.It didn't work.Even the suggestion of a smear campaign

0:04:13 > 0:04:16against her is very unhelpful, it takes a lot of bravery and gumption

0:04:16 > 0:04:20to come forward when something like this has happened to you and she has

0:04:20 > 0:04:25said I think this weekend that she did that because there were other

0:04:25 > 0:04:28women she knew who might have similar complaints to make and other

0:04:28 > 0:04:32women who needed to speak out about other people. To have that

0:04:32 > 0:04:36discredited when we are in the midst of this harassment scandal, not just

0:04:36 > 0:04:38in Westminster, that is very unhelpful and worrying. He had

0:04:38 > 0:04:44apologised. We had closure on it but then it was reopened this weekend.

0:04:44 > 0:04:49This doesn't really suggest someone who feels very sorry if there is any

0:04:49 > 0:04:54truth in this.It is the allies who are trying to help in some way, I

0:04:54 > 0:05:00suppose. They felt they were. The Sunday Times. Theresa May ditches

0:05:00 > 0:05:05hunting to back animal rights. It was a manifesto pledge that fox

0:05:05 > 0:05:11hunting, they would overturn the ban. This is part of a rebranding of

0:05:11 > 0:05:17the party? It is. But I'm not sure it will unite the party, I think it

0:05:17 > 0:05:22will anger quite a lot of the rural supporters as the Sunday Times

0:05:22 > 0:05:26points out, and split MPs, so if this is meant to be a rousing end of

0:05:26 > 0:05:30year unite the Tories, identity will play out that way.It is to address

0:05:30 > 0:05:34the idea that she has managed to make the conservative brand of toxic

0:05:34 > 0:05:40again since the general election, and one of the stories that was much

0:05:40 > 0:05:46shared, even that wasn't true, was all about, the social media backlash

0:05:46 > 0:05:50over accusations that they were using Brexit legislation to reduce

0:05:50 > 0:05:56UK levels of protection for animals, that wasn't true, but that went

0:05:56 > 0:06:00bananas on social media and it became a big thing and a big story

0:06:00 > 0:06:02that seems to reflect something about the Conservatives brand, and I

0:06:02 > 0:06:06suspect this is about realigning and addressing this idea that they are a

0:06:06 > 0:06:14toxic particles up they think this will appealto the younger voters.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19Yes, this idea the nasty party, interesting timing, as well, before

0:06:19 > 0:06:22the Boxing Day shoot, a strong statement to make at this time of

0:06:22 > 0:06:26year, but maybe she feels it will be slightly buried for maybe older

0:06:26 > 0:06:31supporters at this time of year.A couple of stories we can connect at

0:06:31 > 0:06:37the bottom, troops get £1 for Christmas Day as Whitehall pays six

0:06:37 > 0:06:48and £50 for a move -- £650.The Christmas dinner was on Friday for

0:06:48 > 0:06:51troops in Afghanistan who feel this has been a forgotten conflict. It is

0:06:51 > 0:06:58in its 17th year and we have rather taken our attention away from it.

0:06:58 > 0:07:03They have Christmas dinner on Friday. It has snowed in

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Afghanistan, they ponder, and troops from the Yorkshire Regiment have

0:07:05 > 0:07:11been reduced to swapping the stars on the American trees for Yorkshire

0:07:11 > 0:07:16flags -- they point out. Basically saying the Americans have been

0:07:16 > 0:07:21giving great things the Christmas. Theresa May has made a speech

0:07:21 > 0:07:24praising the troops, but it seems they have been given very little

0:07:24 > 0:07:31money individually. And of course on top of that the nice bit is that

0:07:31 > 0:07:34their family and friends have sent loads of presence but the country

0:07:34 > 0:07:41has done little for them for top 500 troopshave been given £500 for this

0:07:41 > 0:07:46elevation is but Whitehall staff are being sent for presentation skills

0:07:46 > 0:07:50training at a cost of £650 a day which rather dwarfs the £500 for 500

0:07:50 > 0:07:57troops.It doesn't really add up. Theresa May has paid a heart-warming

0:07:57 > 0:08:02tribute to the troops. It is to the empty if they are essentially being

0:08:02 > 0:08:07given pound each to Celebrex Christmas and there's a long list of

0:08:07 > 0:08:11the things that the American soldiers get, including Christmas

0:08:11 > 0:08:14trees and food and a special screening of Star Wars. -- to

0:08:14 > 0:08:23celebrate Christmas but and Whitehall staff are having £650

0:08:23 > 0:08:31spent on them so they can in answer it. -- they can speak clearly.I

0:08:31 > 0:08:34will charge them a fraction of that to put them through their paces, if

0:08:34 > 0:08:38I were allowed, which I'm not, probably. And now the Sunday

0:08:38 > 0:08:45express. Christmas Brexit bonus, exports are soaring.Interesting

0:08:45 > 0:08:54one. They compared exports with 2015 and they say they are up 9%, but

0:08:54 > 0:08:56normally you compare year-on-year which they are clearly not doing.

0:08:56 > 0:09:02What are you suggesting? This might not be a story which I think is

0:09:02 > 0:09:07entirely worthy of a front page of any newspaper.Maybe we can find the

0:09:07 > 0:09:12figures for 2016 between now and 1130, that would be interesting.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14Apparently we are selling lots of food and whiskey and award-winning

0:09:14 > 0:09:23TV.How is this boosted by Brexit? The value of the pound? That is the

0:09:23 > 0:09:27assumption, from the little we have got to go on, the shock spike in

0:09:27 > 0:09:31festive food and drink at this time of year, helped by Brexit. The

0:09:31 > 0:09:42Sunday Telegraph. Ministers: tax grab on Brexiteers is bad for

0:09:42 > 0:09:49democracy, this is Michael Grove >> STUDIO: -- Michael Gove and Boris

0:09:49 > 0:09:55Johnson.Yes, usually if you make a private donation to a political

0:09:55 > 0:09:59party and a campaign they are not taxed on it over and a number of

0:09:59 > 0:10:04individuals who donated to EU referendum campaigns are now shocked

0:10:04 > 0:10:11that they are been charged tax by HMRC and I suspect there will be a

0:10:11 > 0:10:20few accountants heads rolling over this. It's interesting because HMRC,

0:10:20 > 0:10:24it is better say they have been quite rocked by the suggestion of

0:10:24 > 0:10:27Brexit, they spoke to the Treasury Select Committee saying they were

0:10:27 > 0:10:35going to have to hire loads more staff and it would cost them five --

0:10:35 > 0:10:38£500 million to cope with the new borders and everything and it would

0:10:38 > 0:10:43take the many years to implement. It is interesting now that they are

0:10:43 > 0:10:47chasing this down. It was in September, it was reported by the

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Office for Budget Responsibility that HMRC had been aggressively

0:10:50 > 0:10:55going after inheritance tax which is what this is being classed under and

0:10:55 > 0:11:00it was going to be up 15%, the current action, so inheritance tax

0:11:00 > 0:11:06is something they are zoning in on. It would apply to anyone who has

0:11:06 > 0:11:13donated to either of the campaigns? The story says the Remain supporter

0:11:13 > 0:11:17has also have this, so this is not just Leave supporters, so it would

0:11:17 > 0:11:22apply to both camps. If they are the rules, they are not being picked on.

0:11:22 > 0:11:27I would say not. And also, they raised the point that this didn't

0:11:27 > 0:11:36happen with the AV vote but maybe something has shifted. However, that

0:11:36 > 0:11:40said, I do feel for her HMRC because I have plenty of friends who are

0:11:40 > 0:11:44civil servants and Brexit is a total nightmare for them and they will not

0:11:44 > 0:11:52have had a very jolly last year and it is very stressful but the

0:11:52 > 0:11:59suggestion that that means they are going after this -- these people,

0:11:59 > 0:12:09but doesn't hold. -- that doesn't hold.Yes, that is right.Staying

0:12:09 > 0:12:18with the Sunday Telegraph, UFOs do exist, says the Pentagon's X-Files

0:12:18 > 0:12:27J. Who is he really? -- X-Files chief.They have described him as

0:12:27 > 0:12:32the real X-Files programme, he says the case of objects travelling at

0:12:32 > 0:12:39hypersonic speeds which are inexplicable, has been proved beyond

0:12:39 > 0:12:48reasonable doubt, so this is interesting, aliens and Christmas.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51--it says items that were made yellow macro by any nation or any

0:12:51 > 0:12:57company.If they are so far away that you can't see them properly,

0:12:57 > 0:13:01how do you know? He's also resigning, this is his resignation

0:13:01 > 0:13:05letter and his point is, you have not been paying more attention and

0:13:05 > 0:13:13you should have given us more money for the projects, but he said it is

0:13:13 > 0:13:18classified as to whether there are any UFOs over the UK.Freedom of

0:13:18 > 0:13:23information request needs to go in. The Mail on Sunday, the Army is

0:13:23 > 0:13:29being used the be the best slogan for some time but they are getting

0:13:29 > 0:13:40rid of it. -- has been used to stop apparently it is seen as yellow

0:13:40 > 0:13:45macro-- apparently it is seen as non-inclusive and elitist, and this

0:13:45 > 0:13:52will cost £1.5 million.They have done a focus group?Yes, market

0:13:52 > 0:13:56research, and it is being removed from everything, completely dropped.

0:13:56 > 0:14:01It has been their slogan since 1983, they have a little extract Wyatt has

0:14:01 > 0:14:07been written off, saying it didn't not resonate with many of their key

0:14:07 > 0:14:20audiences -- little in Stack terrain -- little extract which explains why

0:14:20 > 0:14:25it has been written. We don't know what by going to replace it with. Do

0:14:25 > 0:14:33we? It doesn't say.Be the second best.The average.That is not what

0:14:33 > 0:14:42you want. They must know that this is putting people off. They must do,

0:14:42 > 0:14:45but when Gavin Williamson is facing open rebellion at suggestions that

0:14:45 > 0:14:51the Army will be slashed below 70,000 personnel and backbenchers

0:14:51 > 0:14:54are up in arms and he has been accused of not trying to push this

0:14:54 > 0:14:57into the budget enough, you wouldn't think this was a top priority, even

0:14:57 > 0:15:03if it's not. Having trouble keeping funding to keep people, attracting

0:15:03 > 0:15:09people for the but they always need to.People leave and then they need

0:15:09 > 0:15:19fresh recruits. That's right.They need to get young people.Exactly.

0:15:19 > 0:15:26The Sunday express, eat drink and be merry, because an anti-fat jab is on

0:15:26 > 0:15:35the way.Has someone -- as someone who has already eaten mince pies

0:15:35 > 0:15:42this is great news. There was a tin of sweets alongside you outside.

0:15:42 > 0:15:49Yes, that's right.Not yourself out. This is a university in Israel that

0:15:49 > 0:15:53has discovered a drug while researching its use in treating

0:15:53 > 0:15:58obesity and I think watch this space because hopefully what the drug

0:15:58 > 0:16:05does, it says here, a jab, it transforms cells which normally

0:16:05 > 0:16:11store fat into cells which burn it and that sounds like a dream. There

0:16:11 > 0:16:14was a researcher recently who said if you lose a decent amount of

0:16:14 > 0:16:19weight you can get type two diabetes back under control, as well. That

0:16:19 > 0:16:24would be against that suggestion of eating whatever you like but we will

0:16:24 > 0:16:28anyway because it is Christmas. We never learn.

0:16:28 > 0:16:29That's it for The Papers this hour.

0:16:29 > 0:16:34Thank you to my guests.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37They'll both be back at 1130 for another look at the stories

0:16:37 > 0:16:38making the news tomorrow.

0:16:38 > 0:16:43Now it's time for Meet the Author.
