0:00:14 > 0:00:18Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be

0:00:18 > 0:00:19bringing us tomorrow.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23With me are Dia Chakravarty, the Daily Telegraph's Brexit editor,

0:00:23 > 0:00:25and Laura Hughes, political correspondent

0:00:25 > 0:00:31from the Financial Times.

0:00:31 > 0:00:37Welcome. Happy New Year. Let's show you what front pages we have.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40The Metro leads with that explosive book behind the scenes

0:00:40 > 0:00:41of the White House, which includes unflattering

0:00:41 > 0:00:45material about the president and revelations about his hair.

0:00:45 > 0:00:51The times also features the book in which Steve Bannon is said to have

0:00:51 > 0:00:53made some sensational claims about his former boss.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56The Express looks at how much money is spent on foreign aid, and says

0:00:56 > 0:01:00some MPs say it should be diverted to the cash-strapped NHS.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04The FT reports on the story we brought you earlier,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06about companies being warned to replace all their computer

0:01:06 > 0:01:08hardware or risk a cyber attack from hackers.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11The Telegraph leads on the release of John Worboys, thought to be one

0:01:11 > 0:01:14of the UK's most prolific rapists, who is set to be freed from prison.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16The Mirror also has that story.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18It says Worboys will be released

0:01:18 > 0:01:27just eight years after being jailed.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31The sun headline says that is not just this as a Parole Board approves

0:01:31 > 0:01:36his release. And the Guardian leads on the National Health Service

0:01:36 > 0:01:38winter crisis, which led to an apology from the Prime Minister

0:01:38 > 0:01:43after tens of thousands of people had their operations postponed.

0:01:43 > 0:01:50Let's start off with Donald Trump and this sensational book, as it is

0:01:50 > 0:01:55being described. The new line on that, according to the Times

0:01:55 > 0:01:58newspaper, is that Donald Trump's mental health has been questioned by

0:01:58 > 0:02:04Steve Bannon, his former ideological soul mate and top aide who know, it

0:02:04 > 0:02:08seems, has turned against him.The basic story is that Michael Wolff,

0:02:08 > 0:02:14the journalist, is bringing out a book tomorrow and President Trump's

0:02:14 > 0:02:17lawyers are trying to get an injunction to stop that from being

0:02:17 > 0:02:23published. The explosive claims you talk about, talk about the

0:02:23 > 0:02:26spectacular falling out between Steve Bannon, his former right-hand

0:02:26 > 0:02:31man, and Donald Trump. It talks about invoking this amendment, the

0:02:31 > 0:02:3725th Amendment, which questions... Which can actually depose a

0:02:37 > 0:02:40president from office on mental health grounds. It has gone to that

0:02:40 > 0:02:44sort of level. There is a huge amount of interest. This is

0:02:44 > 0:02:50following the events of what happened after Charlottesville and

0:02:50 > 0:02:59Trump's inability to actually condemn what is seen as the white

0:02:59 > 0:03:06supremacist aspect of those incidents.Some sensational

0:03:06 > 0:03:10allegations in this book from what we have read so far. Do we learn a

0:03:10 > 0:03:14lot, do we think, but the real White House, the real Donald Trump?I

0:03:14 > 0:03:18think it is less about the White House and more about Donald Trump's

0:03:18 > 0:03:22time in the White House. Already people are suggesting this book is

0:03:22 > 0:03:27not true, that it is actually not totally accurate. But whatever does

0:03:27 > 0:03:30come out will be incredibly damning to the president, which is why he is

0:03:30 > 0:03:35taking these dramatic steps to try and stop its publication. Ironically

0:03:35 > 0:03:40though and brilliantly for the author himself, this huge storm is

0:03:40 > 0:03:44the best PR you could ever hope for. It is a best seller already. It was

0:03:44 > 0:03:48meant to come out next week. But because of the excitement it is

0:03:48 > 0:03:56being published tomorrow. And Donald Trump so angry about it. The front

0:03:56 > 0:04:01page of the Metro plays on that. Keep your hair on. An unflattering

0:04:01 > 0:04:08picture of the American president. As you say, the more he tries to

0:04:08 > 0:04:14stop this book being published, which seems a forlorn attempt, the

0:04:14 > 0:04:19more he -- it is destined to rise in the best seller lists. It is

0:04:19 > 0:04:23difficult to stop it being published. There will be leaks.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Everybody will try to get their hands on the book. It has reached

0:04:27 > 0:04:31the best seller list through pre-orders. What actually is going

0:04:31 > 0:04:34to happen would be quite interesting. I don't know if

0:04:34 > 0:04:38anything new is coming out of this. He has this perception. It seems to

0:04:38 > 0:04:43be a confirmation that a lot of people, allegations that a lot of

0:04:43 > 0:04:46people are made against him. How he comes out of it will be interesting.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51It is interesting with the leaks we have seen so far, the family of

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Donald Trump say there are suggestions his daughter had a sort

0:04:55 > 0:04:59of plan and part to become the next president following her father.

0:04:59 > 0:05:04Really personal things about her describing his hairstyle and how he

0:05:04 > 0:05:09managed to get it that way. Stories of his wife crying when it was

0:05:09 > 0:05:13revealed he would be president, arriving in the White House not

0:05:13 > 0:05:17knowing how to do with that. The question of his mental health is

0:05:17 > 0:05:21quite a serious one. I remember the time in August when the racial

0:05:21 > 0:05:24violence was happening in Virginia, the leader of the free world had

0:05:24 > 0:05:28this sort of extraordinary response to the violence and kept blaming

0:05:28 > 0:05:32both sides, then blaming one side, it was all very confused. These are

0:05:32 > 0:05:37pretty serious allegations that supposedly have been made by one of

0:05:37 > 0:05:42Trump's closest allies. He has since come out and said, it is not me, we

0:05:42 > 0:05:47have a good relationship, I am super loyal to my old boss. Not that

0:05:47 > 0:05:53loyal!Trump claimed he lost his mind when he left the White House.

0:05:53 > 0:06:01Let's move on to the Daily Telegraph front page. It is on a number of

0:06:01 > 0:06:06front pages, the story about John Warboys, sentenced to a minimum of

0:06:06 > 0:06:10eight years after drugging and sexually assaulting at least 12

0:06:10 > 0:06:16women. He was a black cab driver, known as the black cab rapist, who

0:06:16 > 0:06:23had what was called in the trial as a rape kit in his vehicle. Ian Sloan

0:06:23 > 0:06:28to get released. This seems to be the biggest story of the night. It

0:06:28 > 0:06:33has struck quite a lot of people, I think, the fact that 102 people have

0:06:33 > 0:06:37come forward and alleged that this man has raped them. And as you have

0:06:37 > 0:06:45just read out, it was all premeditated. He had a rape kit in

0:06:45 > 0:06:52his car to carry out his crime. When the case was actually been discussed

0:06:52 > 0:06:59in the courts, I think it was in 2009, if I remember correctly, the

0:06:59 > 0:07:02police officers involved were originally very surprised at what

0:07:02 > 0:07:10they thought was quite a lenient sentence that had been served. It

0:07:10 > 0:07:13had not been referred to the Court of Appeal at that time. That seemed

0:07:13 > 0:07:17like a surprise to a lot of the officers involved in this case. Now,

0:07:17 > 0:07:26with this early release, it is very strange. He is going from a closed

0:07:26 > 0:07:34prison to being released. And Laura, government sources are quoted as

0:07:34 > 0:07:37saying this is a surprising decision. The government are clearly

0:07:37 > 0:07:43very concerned?Yes. And also David Lidington, the Justice Secretary,

0:07:43 > 0:07:47has no powers to do anything about it. The concern would be the public

0:07:47 > 0:07:51perception of this decision by the three members of this panel who have

0:07:51 > 0:07:56approved his release and seemed to deem this man is now safe to be

0:07:56 > 0:08:01among women. There will be calls to see how they reached that verdict,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04what the conversation was they had in that room when they made that

0:08:04 > 0:08:08decision. The number -- a number of the women have come forward and said

0:08:08 > 0:08:11they had absolutely no idea this decision had been taken. That to me

0:08:11 > 0:08:17is pretty shocking. They didn't even know this man was going to be coming

0:08:17 > 0:08:21out. One woman said she learned of the news while cooking tea for her

0:08:21 > 0:08:25children. She saw it on the television.Jamie Oliver in the

0:08:25 > 0:08:30daily Mirror. Stop your kids buying sugary energy drinks. Shivering

0:08:30 > 0:08:36drinks is a hot topic. We ran a story earlier on. -- sugar in drinks

0:08:36 > 0:08:40is a hot topic. The makers of iron Bru are going to cut New Meadow

0:08:40 > 0:08:47sugar in it by Mark -- half.Jamie Oliver has become known as a bit of

0:08:47 > 0:08:52a killjoy, saying children should not be reading this and that. When

0:08:52 > 0:09:00he himself has tried to serve kids healthy food at school, kids were

0:09:00 > 0:09:02actually refusing to read that and were actually trying to go and eat

0:09:02 > 0:09:08fast food somewhere else. The question would be to see how we

0:09:08 > 0:09:11actually deal with it as a society. I think far too often we are very

0:09:11 > 0:09:17quick to slap on a tax on something. To a certain extent we expect the

0:09:17 > 0:09:20state to be the parent rather than our parents, schools or communities.

0:09:20 > 0:09:25Often that does not work. If we're not getting into the habit of

0:09:25 > 0:09:27healthy eating, people will stockpile and probably have the

0:09:27 > 0:09:30sugar and take it from somewhere else. I question the merits of that

0:09:30 > 0:09:34to a certain extent. Of course we need to be concerned about what we

0:09:34 > 0:09:39eat.Let's move on to the Guardian. The NHS story is a big story this

0:09:39 > 0:09:47week. The postponement of routine operations causing a lot of people a

0:09:47 > 0:09:52lot of anxiety. The Prime Minister, an apology to the patients hit by

0:09:52 > 0:09:56the this -- by these delays. A politically damaging to think this

0:09:56 > 0:10:01is too Theresa May?I think it was quite damaging yesterday that Jeremy

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Hunt apologised. When she gave a statement she chose not to

0:10:05 > 0:10:09apologise. She has struck a different tone today and has made

0:10:09 > 0:10:12that apology, probably because she felt it was necessary. It is

0:10:12 > 0:10:17damaging for her because obviously the strained relationship she has

0:10:17 > 0:10:21with Stephen -- Simon Stevens, who as a transactional arrangement of

0:10:21 > 0:10:25Number 10 at the moment in a way he didn't have under George Osborne. He

0:10:25 > 0:10:30has kept out of the dark. Before Christmas Theresa May said as head

0:10:30 > 0:10:32of the NHS you are personally responsible for ensuring we get

0:10:32 > 0:10:37through this winter. Every statement ever made by her on the NHS

0:10:37 > 0:10:42contributes to this slightly bizarre strained transactional relationship

0:10:42 > 0:10:52that these two have. It probably paid for a politically today to

0:10:52 > 0:10:55apologise but Labour will jump on this and called for more money to be

0:10:55 > 0:11:02put into the NHS.Problems in the NHS, the education system. The Times

0:11:02 > 0:11:05front page, crisis in teacher recruitment as applications have

0:11:05 > 0:11:12fallen by a third. That is a big drop?Yes, concerns are apparently

0:11:12 > 0:11:16around classroom stress -- stress and accountability. And confusion

0:11:16 > 0:11:21about routes into the profession. That is very strange. Classroom

0:11:21 > 0:11:25stress I can understand. Accountability and confusion around

0:11:25 > 0:11:27route into the profession is something we should be able to deal

0:11:27 > 0:11:35with. Accountability, what does that mean for teachers? Accountability is

0:11:35 > 0:11:39something that every adult in every industry would have two deal with. I

0:11:39 > 0:11:42don't understand how they propose to deal with it. They are comparing the

0:11:42 > 0:11:49jobs with management consultancy etc. Accountability will be an issue

0:11:49 > 0:11:52in those jobs. Are we saying we're not preparing our teachers when we

0:11:52 > 0:11:57are providing them with the training, with the necessary tools

0:11:57 > 0:12:03you need for the role? And how can you do, what can you do to train

0:12:03 > 0:12:05them better for these particular stresses of this particular

0:12:05 > 0:12:12industry?The Financial Times, Laura, your paper. FrontPage. They

0:12:12 > 0:12:20have got a about defence.Toggles through that? Defence cuts is a big

0:12:20 > 0:12:26issue. It has been recently. The defence Minister recently urging the

0:12:26 > 0:12:31government not to make any more cuts. The government does not know

0:12:31 > 0:12:37how to deal with a black hole in funding. They are trying to break it

0:12:37 > 0:12:39up into little bits so they don't have to answer questions as to how

0:12:39 > 0:12:43they have gone to plug this massive gap. We have certain targets. There

0:12:43 > 0:12:50are still proposing... There are calls from senior politicians asking

0:12:50 > 0:12:54for more money. The goblin don't seem to know where it is God, from.

0:12:54 > 0:12:59They are pushing the issue back into the long grass for as long as they

0:12:59 > 0:13:03can.In a sense there is not enough money for the health service either.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07A perennial problem for government. Where do you allocate the resources?

0:13:07 > 0:13:13It is always going to be about priorities. When it comes to

0:13:13 > 0:13:16security, the Conservative problem is also that there is a group of

0:13:16 > 0:13:19very plucky young Conservative MPs who feel very passionately about

0:13:19 > 0:13:27this. They have been adding their voices to it. Johnny Mercer, seem to

0:13:27 > 0:13:31be a rising star in the Conservative Party. This could be politically

0:13:31 > 0:13:36quite difficult for Theresa May and her government.A few seconds left.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Laura, looking ahead to 2018 as a political correspondent, would this

0:13:39 > 0:13:45be a difficult year for the Prime Minister? If you look back at last

0:13:45 > 0:13:49year from the terrorist attacks to the Brexit negotiations, to losing

0:13:49 > 0:13:53Cabinet ministers, she is going to try to watch yourself this year. She

0:13:53 > 0:13:57doesn't want to be the Brexit Prime Minister. She will try to talk about

0:13:57 > 0:14:03other things. But in reality it is going to be about Brexit. I am not

0:14:03 > 0:14:08predicting anything because I don't think you can.You spoilsport! All

0:14:08 > 0:14:10right. No predictions. Thank you indeed.

0:14:10 > 0:14:16Good to talk to you. That is it from the papers denied. You can see the

0:14:16 > 0:14:26front pages online, on BBC News website, seven days a week.

0:14:26 > 0:14:31If you missed -- missed the programme any evening of the week,

0:14:31 > 0:14:34you can watch it on my player. Thank you again.

0:14:34 > 0:14:35That is it. Goodbye.
