0:00:00 > 0:00:00Coming up in a moment, The Papers.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be

0:00:23 > 0:00:24bringing us tomorrow.

0:00:24 > 0:00:25With me are the broadcaster

0:00:25 > 0:00:26John Stapleton and Kate Proctor, Political Correspondent

0:00:27 > 0:00:29at the London Evening Standard.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Welcome to you both.

0:00:31 > 0:00:36Many of tomorrow's front pages are already in.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40And one story dominates as it has dominated the news coverage today.

0:00:40 > 0:00:45The Financial Times broke the story about the men only President's Club

0:00:45 > 0:00:50who called a halt to the events after allegations of sexual

0:00:50 > 0:00:55harassment. It's also the top story in the Metro under the headline

0:00:55 > 0:00:59sexists and the city.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Theresa May was appalled by reports of what she read about the event,

0:01:02 > 0:01:05according to The Daily Telegraph and has rebuked one of her ministers.

0:01:05 > 0:01:10One has had to explain his attendance.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12The Times reports that there have been calls

0:01:12 > 0:01:14for an end to the gagging orders which allegedly stop

0:01:14 > 0:01:16hostesses at parties - from reporting harassment.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18The same story is the lead in The Guardian too.

0:01:19 > 0:01:25Along with the news that scientists have cloned two monkeys. The Daily

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Express as a change of subject with David Cameron caught on camera

0:01:28 > 0:01:37saying Brexit is not as bad as he feared. An uplifting story of a

0:01:37 > 0:01:41woman who has given birth after being caught in the grand foul fire

0:01:41 > 0:01:49tragedy. And the next stories summed up as sleaze balls. Let's start with

0:01:49 > 0:01:55the Financial Times. It has scored a major coup.Congratulations to them,

0:01:55 > 0:01:59cracking investigation, got everyone talking, it has been in the papers

0:01:59 > 0:02:03today and will be there tomorrow. What amazes me is after the Harvey

0:02:03 > 0:02:11Weinstein scandal, has been a great debate about the role of women and

0:02:11 > 0:02:15the question is how does any group of people imagine that in 2018 they

0:02:15 > 0:02:20could get away with something like this. I found it bewildering. This

0:02:20 > 0:02:25was an event at which women were told to wear sexy black dresses,

0:02:25 > 0:02:29underwear to match, high heels, paraded in the fanfare of trumpets

0:02:29 > 0:02:37to a men only assembly and in some cases they were treated to put it

0:02:37 > 0:02:40mildly, inappropriately, to bid it at its strongest, they were sexually

0:02:40 > 0:02:44abused. Unbelievable that these people thought they could get away

0:02:44 > 0:02:49with it.I did not know these gatherings existed so it was

0:02:49 > 0:02:54shocking, well done to the FT for bringing this to our attention. This

0:02:54 > 0:02:59club will be closing after this. The FT has updated as farmers, they are

0:02:59 > 0:03:07shutting down this organisation, -- updated us mess. This has tarnished

0:03:07 > 0:03:10the reputation. They would never have been able to hold an event

0:03:10 > 0:03:15again. I hope it is not the end of it, I think there is more to do, you

0:03:15 > 0:03:22need to speak to the trustees and the people who arranged the event.

0:03:22 > 0:03:27Seeing this being discussed in more detail.I think there are a heck of

0:03:27 > 0:03:31a lot of questions to be asked Michael told these women to dress in

0:03:31 > 0:03:36this way and did the beneficiaries of this event really not know what

0:03:36 > 0:03:41was going on? It's been going for 30 years. It must have happened before

0:03:41 > 0:03:45otherwise the FT would not have had a tip-off to go and have a look at

0:03:45 > 0:03:50it. So they have questions to answer and so have the organisers. An

0:03:50 > 0:03:56interesting debate. In your newsroom a minute ago, four women were

0:03:56 > 0:04:02talking, and one of them said, are we overplaying this a bit? These

0:04:02 > 0:04:04women went voluntarily, some have been there before and enjoyed the

0:04:04 > 0:04:09event. It leads to new opportunities for them and they've been back once

0:04:09 > 0:04:14or twice. And I wondered if we were getting excited about this because

0:04:14 > 0:04:19it is posh people at posh event. Given that you say that lets look at

0:04:19 > 0:04:25the front page of the Metro with this great headline, Sexists and the

0:04:25 > 0:04:31City. Is this partly the point, that it is taking part in the City and

0:04:31 > 0:04:35not so low?Of course, this is what it feels so scandalous because it

0:04:35 > 0:04:40feels like a different group of people altogether. The women's

0:04:40 > 0:04:43minister said today that there seems to be some sort of correlation

0:04:43 > 0:04:52between wealth and holding these events. Is this why we are more

0:04:52 > 0:05:01horrified by it?Probably. For me this is masked in charitable giving,

0:05:01 > 0:05:05supposed to be something altruistic yet at the same time it has

0:05:05 > 0:05:11essentially degraded women. This is why I find it shocking that, some of

0:05:11 > 0:05:17the most respectable people in the country, apparently.Someone asked,

0:05:17 > 0:05:22if we get worked up about this should we also get worked up about

0:05:22 > 0:05:25the fact that there are clubs in Soho with this kind of thing goes on

0:05:25 > 0:05:30every night. There is a difference as someone pointed out, the women

0:05:30 > 0:05:35who work in several know what they are in for. Some of the women

0:05:35 > 0:05:38employed at this event certainly did not and every woman has the right

0:05:38 > 0:05:46not to be abused in this way.£150 for a shift if you are a student or

0:05:46 > 0:05:50on a minimum wage, that's a lot of money to earn in one night and when

0:05:50 > 0:05:56you get there you have entered a room of hell.Let's go to the front

0:05:56 > 0:05:59page of the Daily Telegraph it also leads on this story but with a

0:05:59 > 0:06:07different twist.List makes the point, the political ramifications,

0:06:07 > 0:06:14when minister who is there, and says that he left early because he felt

0:06:14 > 0:06:21uncomfortable, but this report indicates that he was there until

0:06:21 > 0:06:26930 PM and he was at the same event of the previous year and has been

0:06:26 > 0:06:32called upon to account for himself. His line was that he was not aware

0:06:32 > 0:06:42of this activity. It must have happened before otherwise the FT

0:06:42 > 0:06:52would not have been there.Nobody is trying to put a different point of

0:06:52 > 0:06:56view, if you look at Hostess agencies there's quite a lot of

0:06:56 > 0:07:03information that might set alarm bells ringing. When were the vital

0:07:03 > 0:07:14statistics of the addresses are dashed home hostesses. Many of the

0:07:14 > 0:07:19women did not know what they are doing. Host 's work is something you

0:07:19 > 0:07:24might done as a student, because you feel it might be a good idea and you

0:07:24 > 0:07:30can be young and naive and five years later think, that was a

0:07:30 > 0:07:36terrible experience.It doesn't excuse the behaviour.I don't think

0:07:36 > 0:07:40we can say that women signed up for this because they enjoy it and they

0:07:40 > 0:07:48knew what they were doing. I don't think we can say that.A small story

0:07:48 > 0:07:51at the bottom, Trump hails the new Churchill, was that.It is Theresa

0:07:51 > 0:07:58May apparently. He has told her she could become this generation is

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Winston Churchill. He made the comparison with Britain's wartime

0:08:01 > 0:08:06leader in a phone call on December 19 last year, the date is

0:08:06 > 0:08:11interesting because remember, in December last year, they had this

0:08:11 > 0:08:17big bust up over him be treating the Briton First upwelling tweets and

0:08:17 > 0:08:22she condemned him for that and he told her to mind her own business.

0:08:22 > 0:08:33Apparently they have made up.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40Downing Street could control this phone call why did they not let us

0:08:40 > 0:08:50know.

0:09:00 > 0:09:07One big photograph of Theresa may's predecessor. This is not the first

0:09:07 > 0:09:11time he's been caught on camera, he was caught having in a jolly way

0:09:11 > 0:09:22when he handed over to Theresa May. It will infuriate a lot of people,

0:09:22 > 0:09:25people might think, you were supposed to be such a big champion

0:09:25 > 0:09:29for remaining and now it sounds like you are accepting Brexit which I

0:09:29 > 0:09:35don't think people will be happy to hear. I think his judgment is

0:09:35 > 0:09:40welcome that he not centrestage any more. And to get the feel of

0:09:40 > 0:09:44somebody who called the referendum and get a wishy-washy appraisal is

0:09:44 > 0:09:48not but satisfactory. I think Theresa May might secretly be quite

0:09:48 > 0:09:55pleased. He is perhaps given her six out of ten.Is coded a mistake, not

0:09:55 > 0:09:59a disaster but when you set up against some things he said during

0:09:59 > 0:10:03the campaign to stay in, forecasting thousands of job losses, saying it

0:10:03 > 0:10:07was like putting a bomb and the economy and would cost as all

0:10:07 > 0:10:13pheasants, yet having said that, the other side also said a lot of things

0:10:13 > 0:10:18that didn't come true. That will continue to be debated. The front

0:10:18 > 0:10:23page of the Guardian has a couple of slightly frightened looking monkeys

0:10:23 > 0:10:28on the front. They are exactly the same because they are clones. I'm

0:10:28 > 0:10:31old enough to remember Dolly the sheep although I am not sure that

0:10:31 > 0:10:44you are. Same business. Turkeys cloned in China, it took the

0:10:44 > 0:10:52scientists 19 different attempts. 79 attempts, sorry, I am misreading it,

0:10:52 > 0:11:01some concern, are we getting a step closer to cloning human beings. Of

0:11:01 > 0:11:08course that is illegal. There are ethical issues as well in the very

0:11:08 > 0:11:14process so far. They have done it to use these monkeys to look at medical

0:11:14 > 0:11:18treatments for genetic disorders so this will be interesting medical

0:11:18 > 0:11:22research, to try to see what this might mean for future

0:11:22 > 0:11:26investigations. I know it is an unsavoury topic for many people.

0:11:26 > 0:11:33Indeed it is. The Times has words from Theresa May that she is going

0:11:33 > 0:11:43to talk about tech giants at Davos tomorrow. This is her big speech, at

0:11:43 > 0:11:47huge gathering and economic leaders and experts. Theresa May will talk

0:11:47 > 0:11:50about technology and how they should be more pressure on social media

0:11:50 > 0:11:55providers to remove terrorist content which is a very noble thing

0:11:55 > 0:12:00to talk about but again it's about talking about putting on pressure.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03She's going to say to people and perhaps more pressure should be put

0:12:03 > 0:12:08on shareholders to influence social media companies in haste and knowing

0:12:08 > 0:12:22how quickly they take things of the

0:12:24 > 0:12:32Internet,it's a difficult thing to do.The fact remains that goes on,

0:12:32 > 0:12:38and they do defend and things are published which are distasteful, at

0:12:38 > 0:12:45their worst, horrifying.Let's end with the front page of the daily

0:12:45 > 0:12:49Mirror. Elton is quitting for the sake of his family but it's quite a

0:12:49 > 0:12:55long process of quitting! In the process. He will do three years

0:12:55 > 0:12:58worth of gigs too rounded off and after that we'll do a residency so

0:12:58 > 0:13:04he look after his young family.I am always suspicious of artists who say

0:13:04 > 0:13:08they will quit, I'm a fan of seagulls, they once had a fight on

0:13:08 > 0:13:12stage and asked if they would ever play again one band member said hell

0:13:12 > 0:13:16would have to freeze over first. 14 years later they did play again and

0:13:16 > 0:13:22the album was called hell's frozen over! I am sure he means it, he

0:13:22 > 0:13:28wants to spend more time with his children. He's 70 and has given the

0:13:28 > 0:13:32world so much music, I think these last three years will be enjoyed by

0:13:32 > 0:13:36his hands.Thank you both.

0:13:36 > 0:13:37That's it for The Papers tonight.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39Don't forget you can see the front pages

0:13:39 > 0:13:41of the papers online on the BBC News website.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44It's all there for you - 7 days a week at bbc.co.uk/papers

0:13:44 > 0:13:47and if you miss the programme any evening you can watch it

0:13:47 > 0:13:48later on BBC iPlayer.

0:13:48 > 0:13:49Thank you Lisa and Sarah.

0:13:49 > 0:13:57Goodbye.
