:00:12. > :00:13.

:00:13. > :00:18.financial news with Alice and World Hello and welcome to World Business

:00:18. > :00:26.Report. Inside or out? Prime Minister Cameron looks set to back

:00:26. > :00:29.a plan for a referendum on UK membership of the European Union.

:00:29. > :00:32.And what will the world's economists, politicians and other

:00:32. > :00:42.very important people be talking about as they congregate in Davos

:00:42. > :00:49.

:00:49. > :00:52.for the annual World Economic British Prime Minister David

:00:52. > :00:55.Cameron will deliver his long- delayed speech on the European

:00:55. > :00:57.Union on Wednesday, stepping into a political minefield that could end

:00:57. > :01:02.up re-shaping Britain's relationship with the UK's largest

:01:02. > :01:06.trading partner, the EU. Cameron is expected to say which powers he

:01:06. > :01:09.wants to try to claw back, and to promise some kind of a referendum

:01:09. > :01:12.on what he calls a "new settlement," if he wins the next

:01:12. > :01:22.general election. Nigel Cassidy looks at what the business

:01:22. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:27.Britain and voted for Europe in the hope it would boost trade and

:01:27. > :01:37.employment. Political leaders at the time were proud of the 3

:01:37. > :01:40.

:01:40. > :01:48.Britain was no longer an economic island. Yet tension from the start

:01:48. > :01:54.about Russell's directions can no longer be contained. -- Brussels's.

:01:54. > :01:59.The continent's rule book is being pushed to London. Many people in

:01:59. > :02:04.business would not want to go. could be a long way from

:02:04. > :02:13.integrating in the eurozone. I think that would be catastrophic.

:02:13. > :02:17.And a Euro-sceptic in that extent. Europe would be a block

:02:17. > :02:22.competitively disadvantaged to the rest of the world. Our prosperity

:02:22. > :02:32.would go down. The best outcome will be somewhere near free-trade

:02:32. > :02:32.

:02:32. > :02:36.plus the obvious things we should co-operate on. A heating supplier

:02:36. > :02:42.company... The alternative of Britain being thrown out of the EU

:02:42. > :02:47.would be bad news. Business needs to have certainty and

:02:47. > :02:53.predictability. Without that, you cannot put up the upfront money

:02:53. > :02:58.required to grow a business. When we handle sales people in Germany,

:02:58. > :03:03.we have to prepare the business to make future sales. If I do not have

:03:03. > :03:07.that certainty about the ability for us to export in a certain price

:03:07. > :03:15.of two Germany, how would not make that investment. Britain buys more

:03:15. > :03:21.from Europe then it sells to it. It would not make sense for the

:03:21. > :03:26.European Union to impose new tariff barriers. Britain is paying a fee

:03:26. > :03:31.for its continued membership. Brussels might be tempted to impose

:03:31. > :03:34.higher exit charges. The tour to discourage anyone else thinking of

:03:34. > :03:37.leaving. -- that will be to discourage.

:03:37. > :03:41.The World E The World Eorum opens its doors in Davos, Switzerland in the

:03:41. > :03:46.next few hours. 2,500 business leaders and 50 heads of state are

:03:46. > :03:48.attending. The theme this year is dynamic resilience. The idea that

:03:48. > :03:52.companies, governments and individuals must find ways to

:03:52. > :03:57.absorb shock more effectively is not new, but how do we go about it?

:03:57. > :04:00.A good place to start is economic growth. So this year, world leaders

:04:00. > :04:08.are giving much more of the stage to entrepreneurs and young thinkers.

:04:08. > :04:15.Tanya Beckett met some of them to find out what they had to say.

:04:15. > :04:18.Every year, this small Swiss town plays a host to some people.

:04:18. > :04:25.remember when Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were here. This woman

:04:25. > :04:31.runs a ski shop. Snow sport comes to a standstill for a week. For me,

:04:31. > :04:38.it is interesting. For business, it is not a good week. She is open-

:04:38. > :04:42.minded. It is echoed by the fame of the Forum. No single crisis

:04:42. > :04:49.dominates the talks. -- theme. Leaders are eager to listen to the

:04:49. > :04:53.concerns of younger players. It is about financial literacy. I bring a

:04:53. > :05:03.perspective of engaging young people and teaching lessons of --

:05:03. > :05:03.

:05:03. > :05:07.at an early age. Educating parents and children. Seen through the

:05:07. > :05:12.vision of a younger generation, the world is a different place. This

:05:12. > :05:18.woman is an entrepreneur. She brings a strong message. It is

:05:18. > :05:23.about positive thinking, cautious optimism. This is one of the things

:05:23. > :05:29.we need all across the world. How can we be more optimistic and have

:05:29. > :05:35.a brighter outlook? In times of crisis, world leaders have come

:05:35. > :05:41.here to Davos, over the past 40 years, ready for an open exchange

:05:42. > :05:45.of ideas. They recognise the world has changed. They need to think

:05:45. > :05:55.again. They are looking this time to the outer reaches of the

:05:55. > :05:55.

:05:55. > :06:02.business community for guidance. Joining us from Davos is Wai Ming

:06:02. > :06:10.Won, Chief Financial Officer at computer maker Lenovo.

:06:10. > :06:14.What are you hoping to get out of doubles this year? -- Davos. We

:06:14. > :06:23.want to be part of the global economy and contribute to the

:06:23. > :06:29.global economy. We are a PC company. We see a pivotal role in improving

:06:29. > :06:35.the overall wealth and equipment of society. We want to participate

:06:35. > :06:42.actively to be aware of the issue and contribute. Than us talk about

:06:42. > :06:47.the story behind your company. It was extraordinary. He began in 1984.

:06:47. > :06:54.Now you are one of the biggest PC makers in the world. What has been

:06:54. > :07:03.the main drive behind your growth? We started off as a small company.

:07:03. > :07:06.We had a few engineers in China. They had big ambitions, trying to

:07:06. > :07:11.get technology products. Our biggest change after we achieved

:07:11. > :07:17.world number one status was when we acquired the PC business. The

:07:17. > :07:24.driver for us was to continue to be successful and try to a product

:07:24. > :07:29.this is common to benefit the world and our shareholders and investors.

:07:30. > :07:34.What are the biggest challenges facing your company at the moment?

:07:34. > :07:40.There are criticisms you are too reliant on China as a major market.

:07:40. > :07:47.You cannot have a big enough presence in the US. Also, as a

:07:47. > :07:54.large PC maker, are we entering a post PC era? How we all going to

:07:54. > :08:02.move towards smart technology? Certainly. We started off being the

:08:02. > :08:07.leader in China. It in terms of PCs, China is the largest market. It is

:08:07. > :08:12.not fair to say that the company relies only on China. If you look

:08:12. > :08:16.at the top three or five countries, we are number one in three or four

:08:16. > :08:26.of these countries, like Japan. We are making tremendous progress in

:08:26. > :08:36.other economies, like Brazil and Germany. PC is our core product. We

:08:36. > :08:36.

:08:36. > :08:42.do not only rely on PC. We are moving into the post PC period. In

:08:42. > :08:47.terms of engaging ourselves in terms of smart devices, we look at

:08:47. > :08:57.the smartphone. It has had success in China.

:08:57. > :09:00.Some other business stories: Google has reported a rise in profits with

:09:00. > :09:04.a jump in revenues, as it ploughed more money into advertising,

:09:04. > :09:13.research and development. Net profit for the final three months

:09:13. > :09:17.of last year was $2.89 billion, up 7% on a year earlier. Revenues were

:09:17. > :09:19.up by more than a third at $14.4 billion. Google shares rose by

:09:19. > :09:29.almost 5% in after-hours trading, following the better-than-expected

:09:29. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:38.Casey Kearney has been jailed for seven years. -- a CEO. He admitted
