:00:22. > :00:30.Those are the latest headlines. Now In search of profits - internet

:00:30. > :00:34.giant Yahoo unveils 2012 earnings. And a top French bank chief tells

:00:34. > :00:44.World Business Report the answer to French economic problems is to cut

:00:44. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:53.tax, rather than raise it. Hello and a warm welcome, this is

:00:53. > :00:59.World Business Report. From internet hero to internet 0, Yahoo

:00:59. > :01:03.has had a rocky few years. It has haemorrhaged users, investors and

:01:03. > :01:07.even she executives in recent times. Marissa Mayer is the new head of

:01:07. > :01:11.the helm and there are early signs she could be churning around the

:01:11. > :01:16.group's fortunes. But she still faces an almighty battle if she is

:01:16. > :01:22.to take on rivals such as Google and Facebook.

:01:22. > :01:30.In the 1990s and early to thousands, Yahoo's portal was ubiquitous on

:01:30. > :01:35.the internet. The company employed 14,000 staff at its height. It

:01:35. > :01:42.rejected a takeover from Microsoft, saying it was not enough. But it

:01:42. > :01:47.lost ground to rivals. Dougal are 75% of the search market. The share

:01:47. > :01:53.price has tumbled and it has shed thousands of staff. The sea is a

:01:53. > :01:56.complicated market. You need a presence in mobile, presence in

:01:56. > :02:02.search, presence in display. Something you can only compete in

:02:02. > :02:06.if you have a solid strategy behind you and solid leadership. Guy who

:02:07. > :02:12.was missing those of the stings for a number of years. -- Yahoo. We

:02:12. > :02:17.have only seen any real leadership brought in the business recently.

:02:17. > :02:24.Marissa Mayer took over last US chief executive. Company results

:02:24. > :02:29.have improved slightly and the share prices on the rise. Until now,

:02:29. > :02:33.Yahoo has provided content for the desktop computer. But Marissa Mayer

:02:33. > :02:42.has been telling investors that the company will focus on providing

:02:42. > :02:45.content for this, the smartphone. Yahoo is now in a race with the

:02:45. > :02:50.likes of Google and Microsoft to be the first to come up with a

:02:50. > :02:56.workable solution. They need to leapfrog and get into new areas

:02:56. > :02:59.like mobile. The need to get there faster than anyone else. A lot of

:02:59. > :03:06.the changes that Marissa Mayer is making a really good and

:03:06. > :03:10.interesting. But there are only bringing them up to its rivals.

:03:10. > :03:15.Yahoo can find a radically better way to present Web content on

:03:15. > :03:20.smaller screens, it could win over millions of people. But what it

:03:20. > :03:26.offers will have to be truly great if it is to regain its place in the

:03:27. > :03:30.internet's Premier League. The man who runs one of France's

:03:30. > :03:35.biggest banks has told the BBC that France should be cutting taxes, not

:03:35. > :03:43.raising them, if it wants wealth to start growing. It follows an exodus

:03:43. > :03:47.by some of France's richest. Society General chief also told us

:03:47. > :03:53.that governments across the eurozone would have to do more to

:03:53. > :03:59.insure a strong rebound in economic growth this year.

:03:59. > :04:06.The question is how significant will be this rebound. It might not

:04:06. > :04:16.be enough. If we should have countries doing more or in 2014 in

:04:16. > :04:20.terms of co-ordination to stimulate. What more stimulation do you want?

:04:20. > :04:30.Governments are spending money. The European Central Bank has interest

:04:30. > :04:30.

:04:30. > :04:37.rates low. It is not monitoring tools. It is time to progressively

:04:37. > :04:43.look at liquidity. It is about more co-ordination in key policies. If

:04:43. > :04:48.you take the energy sector, you have better European common policy.

:04:48. > :04:54.Having access to cheap energy is a key driver of gross. Adjust the

:04:54. > :05:01.financial sector. Try to turn the page on the crisis and think about

:05:01. > :05:09.strategy to build an efficient European financial sector. Not just

:05:09. > :05:15.and regulation. It is more about this and bringing up the confidence

:05:15. > :05:19.level in the eurozone as an attractive place to invest. France

:05:19. > :05:23.has been caught up in a lot of controversy over tax levels and

:05:23. > :05:29.there has been debate about wealthy people in France as to whether they

:05:29. > :05:36.want to stay there. What you think? It is a legitimate debate. We

:05:36. > :05:41.should aim to reduce taxes. We need to be more competitive. The level

:05:41. > :05:48.of public spending is too high. We need to have a more efficient

:05:48. > :05:52.public system. We need to advance lower taxes going forward.

:05:52. > :05:58.There could be some good news for thousands of workers at the world's

:05:58. > :06:01.biggest platinum miner. It could hold off on plans to shed 14,000

:06:02. > :06:05.staff following crisis talks with trade unions over the weekend. He

:06:05. > :06:10.denounced the lay-offs earlier in the month. It follows months of

:06:10. > :06:13.heavy losses. This was due to rolling strikes in South Africa due

:06:13. > :06:17.to violent clashes between unions and police.

:06:17. > :06:25.Chinese industry goes from strength to strength. Profits at

:06:25. > :06:29.manufacturers increased 17%. Firms made $182 billion last month.

:06:30. > :06:39.Electric goods makers fared the best. Profits in the steelmaking

:06:40. > :06:40.

:06:40. > :06:44.sector plunged by 39%. People of all ages and backgrounds

:06:44. > :06:52.sucking on the who go all water pipe in Turkey. As a Sunday, the

:06:52. > :07:00.practice is all meant. In 2009, the ban on tobacco smoking in public

:07:00. > :07:04.places that a loophole. But no more. From one bend to something

:07:04. > :07:07.approaching that in Hong Kong. Government plans to restrict access

:07:08. > :07:12.to company information has angered thousands of journalists. They

:07:12. > :07:17.claim the move announced Titian's a share. The Chinese territory is one

:07:17. > :07:23.of the few places in Asia where the people can access the information

:07:23. > :07:33.of Public directors, letting them expose fraud and corruption. Just

:07:33. > :07:35.

:07:35. > :07:40.tell us why they are doing this? the moment the public, for a very

:07:40. > :07:45.small fee, can access the home address and identification numbers

:07:46. > :07:49.of company directors. Over one million of them. This type of

:07:49. > :07:53.access is unprecedented in other parts of China. At this point in

:07:53. > :07:56.time, Hong Kong's government says they need to restrict access to

:07:57. > :08:02.this information in order to protect the privacy of company

:08:02. > :08:05.bosses. The timing of this is being questioned. This comes just months

:08:06. > :08:09.after a foreign journalists uncovered fortunes linked to

:08:09. > :08:15.Chinese premier Wen Jiabao as well as the incoming President Xi

:08:15. > :08:20.Jingping. That is why there is this pressure coming from mainland China

:08:21. > :08:24.to stop the media at scrutinising its leaders. The timing is key.

:08:24. > :08:29.Only recently we have the new leadership in China. They were keen

:08:29. > :08:38.to say they wanted to wipe out corruption and do more to make

:08:38. > :08:43.things transparent. But this tells us the opposite. Indeed. In today's

:08:43. > :08:47.paper's journalists, over 1,700 of them, as well as the public, have

:08:47. > :08:51.published an advertisement in newspapers trying to oppose this

:08:51. > :08:56.government proposal. They say that secrecy breeds corruption. They

:08:56. > :09:00.believe that restricting company information. A lot of journalists

:09:00. > :09:05.from doing investigative pieces. It will also facilitate money

:09:05. > :09:09.laundering. That is why so many people oppose this. Not just

:09:09. > :09:14.journalists, but also smaller businesses and labour groups. They

:09:14. > :09:19.depend on this information to chase up on business transactions.

:09:19. > :09:23.Showing you how things were going on the markets in Asia. We are

:09:24. > :09:29.seeing a mixed picture. Quite a bit of good economic news coming out

:09:29. > :09:36.and some bad. Japan seeing a slight loss, almost a present. The yen has

:09:36. > :09:40.strengthened today. -- almost on descent. That is hurting exporters.
