:00:14. > :00:26.

:00:26. > :00:29.get some Samsung phones and tablets banned in the US for good.

:00:29. > :00:39.Is China over the worst? Global markets look for signs of a

:00:39. > :00:42.

:00:42. > :00:47.turnaround, after two years of Welcome to World Business Report.

:00:47. > :00:54.I'm Alice Baxter. Also in the programme - is the smart watch set

:00:54. > :00:57.to be the next must-have gadget? We start with these two. They are

:00:57. > :01:01.archrivals in the shops as they battle for dominance of the

:01:01. > :01:04.multibillion dollar market for smartphones and tablets. But for the

:01:04. > :01:07.last couple of years, Apple and Samsung have also been taking their

:01:07. > :01:14.fight to the courts in a massive legal conflict over four continents.

:01:14. > :01:20.Apple claiming Samsung copied the idea for the iPhone and iPad.

:01:20. > :01:24.Samsung counterclaiming that Apple infringed its technology patents.

:01:24. > :01:26.Today is a major showdown - a court may ban some Samsung smartphones and

:01:26. > :01:29.tablets from US stores, and the US International Trade Commission

:01:29. > :01:39.decides whether to ban imports of certain Samsung devices to the US

:01:39. > :01:44.

:01:44. > :01:48.altogether. Mariko Oi reports. Or wine lawsuit after another, Apple

:01:48. > :01:54.and Samsung have been suing each other for the last few years,

:01:54. > :01:58.literally around the world. -- won lawsuit. The accused each other or

:01:58. > :02:03.stealing key designs and technology. The biggest penalty is having to

:02:03. > :02:08.remove some of their products from stores like there's. All of them are

:02:08. > :02:11.unavailable that American consumers. But if the International Trade

:02:11. > :02:17.Commission rules against Samsung, some of the older models may have to

:02:17. > :02:21.go. This legal battle is starting to get political. In June, the

:02:21. > :02:29.commission decided to ban some Apple products. But the US government

:02:29. > :02:36.overruled the decision, provoking much from South Korea. That is not

:02:36. > :02:43.the only legal battle. Following a jury's ruling that some sun did copy

:02:43. > :02:51.some elements of Apple's products, Apple and trying to get some

:02:51. > :02:58.products banned as well. Is a good publicity? Having Sam some

:02:58. > :03:05.acknowledged and cemented as Apple's main bidder is good Samsung.

:03:05. > :03:11.-- competitor. It is a risky way of getting exposure in the market. The

:03:11. > :03:18.fate of some popular products from Sam Song are now in the hands of the

:03:18. > :03:20.US legal system. -- Samsung. So much for tablets and smartphones,

:03:20. > :03:24.but is that really yesterday's battle? According to reports,

:03:24. > :03:28.Samsung has applied in the last few days for US and South Korean

:03:28. > :03:34.trademarks for a smart watch that connects to the Internet. This is

:03:34. > :03:37.one prototype that Sony were showing off earlier this year. There have

:03:37. > :03:42.long been rumours that Apple is working on its own watch but has

:03:42. > :03:50.Samsung got there first? Let's talk to technology analyst

:03:50. > :03:54.Larry Magid. He joins us via webcam from Palo Alto California.

:03:54. > :04:03.Good to talk to you. Thank you for joining us. Talk me through the

:04:03. > :04:07.smartphone. A mean, the smart watch. Will it be the next big thing? I am

:04:07. > :04:12.thinking maybe Apple can see is Samsung for stealing the idea, which

:04:12. > :04:19.is actually a room are. After all, since they had been rumours of,

:04:19. > :04:29.maybe they have a law suit there. A jerking. Samsung may be able to beat

:04:29. > :04:39.

:04:39. > :04:48.important. We are pretty sure Apple is moving in that direction. --

:04:48. > :04:55.wearable. It is a chance for some other players. Sony launched its

:04:55. > :05:01.prototype earlier. Talk me through what we are expected thing this

:05:01. > :05:07.smart watch to be able to do. Will it effectively replace our phones

:05:07. > :05:13.and other things? Most of the products are here talked about are

:05:13. > :05:19.really parts to the smartphone. If the Samsung watch can connect with

:05:19. > :05:23.an android phone, obviously a Samsung, you would not have to

:05:23. > :05:30.reinvent everything. If you put all of the technology in the watch, I do

:05:30. > :05:39.not think you will get much battery life. It could be done. I think

:05:39. > :05:48.Apple, will also be thinking like that. Thank you. We will be waiting

:05:48. > :05:51.to see the result. To China, where global markets are

:05:51. > :05:54.looking for more evidence that the economy is recovering after two

:05:54. > :05:59.years of slowing growth. On Thursday strong import and export figures for

:05:59. > :06:02.July boosted hopes that the Chinese economy could be over the worst. In

:06:02. > :06:08.the last few hours, we have had some inflation figures which have been

:06:09. > :06:15.fairly positive. In an hour, we'll get the really important ones -

:06:15. > :06:22.industrial production and retail sales figures for July. We will

:06:22. > :06:30.bring order that in a little bit more detail. We will cross over to

:06:30. > :06:33.Beijing. All of the indicators seem to suggest that after a rather slow

:06:33. > :06:39.two years, things are moving in the right direction for China. That is

:06:39. > :06:45.right. They are talking about a normalisation, a stabilisation of

:06:46. > :06:51.the situation. Many will say it is unclear if we are seeing a full

:06:51. > :06:58.recovery. What is happening here, China is having a larger slowdown in

:06:58. > :07:04.almost 20 years. China's economy is still growing more than 7%. That

:07:04. > :07:12.would be the envy of the world. Has been a drop in demand from America

:07:12. > :07:17.and are. And also, China's new leaders want to see a rebalancing of

:07:17. > :07:21.the economy. They have said they are willing to see a slower and more

:07:21. > :07:25.sustainable growth. But the figure everyone talks about is 7%. The

:07:25. > :07:31.leaders said they would not let economic growth drop below that

:07:31. > :07:37.figure. It is the envy of many countries. Just to break down the

:07:37. > :07:42.data that we have been getting. On Thursday, strong numbers coming out.

:07:42. > :07:48.Exports have not picked up in the US or Europe. We had the inflation

:07:48. > :07:52.numbers out today. We are expecting the retail sales and industrial

:07:52. > :07:59.production to come out next. They are expected to be read to the

:07:59. > :08:07.strong. Yes, relatively strong. There are a few areas. Demand

:08:07. > :08:16.elsewhere is picking up. What else is interesting is the issue of

:08:16. > :08:26.oversupply. Some industries have authorities trying to tackle back

:08:26. > :08:27.

:08:27. > :08:30.issue. -- that issue. That could boost their output. There are

:08:30. > :08:36.concerns that some state owned enterprises in the long run could go

:08:36. > :08:44.to the wall. That will concern people, in particular, industries.

:08:44. > :08:48.People seem to think the economic situation in China may be bottoming

:08:48. > :08:58.out if these figures over the last few months are to be believed.

:08:58. > :08:58.

:08:58. > :09:01.you. Let's stay in the region and had to Singapore. Singapore marks

:09:01. > :09:03.its 48th Independence Day today and they're celebrating. The Prime

:09:03. > :09:07.Minister has announced Singapore's economy is expected to grow

:09:07. > :09:14.previously forecast. Sharanjit Leyl joins me from Singapore what has the

:09:14. > :09:19.Prime Minister been saying? It is national day of stop --

:09:19. > :09:29.national day. It means the Prime Minister gave an address on the

:09:29. > :09:29.

:09:30. > :09:36.forecast of the year. He has raised the forecast. A sign that South East

:09:36. > :09:40.Asia is benefiting from the global recovery. There is a lot of focus on

:09:40. > :09:50.growth here because Singapore is incredibly small. It has no natural

:09:50. > :09:52.
