:00:00. > :00:00.latest headlines from BBC World News for the latest financial news now

:00:00. > :00:27.with Sally. Samsung sees its profits slip. It

:00:28. > :00:33.fails to hit targets and faces growing competition in China. Edges

:00:34. > :00:38.and gizmos galore. The worlds collide as -- the world 's largest

:00:39. > :00:43.gathering of geeks gathers in Las Vegas.

:00:44. > :00:50.Be very warm welcome. The world risen -- business report. The jobs

:00:51. > :00:54.that are vanishing from our cities. We had to the cinema to see how the

:00:55. > :01:00.changing times are putting projectionists out of work. First of

:01:01. > :01:04.all, Samsung's release of new weird and wonderful gadget is not a moment

:01:05. > :01:09.too soon. Today, the company released its latest numbers and they

:01:10. > :01:12.were well below expectations. Let's outline them for you. The company

:01:13. > :01:19.have an operating profit of $7.8 billion, that is an 18% fall in the

:01:20. > :01:25.previous quarter. In tough times are coming. Samsung is bracing itself

:01:26. > :01:29.for its weakest my phone profit growth in seven years as Apple tries

:01:30. > :01:34.to grow its share of China's $80 billion market. Add to that,

:01:35. > :01:39.Samsung's mobile business will come under pressure when Apple starts to

:01:40. > :01:44.sell its phones through China Mobile on January 17. Let's get more now

:01:45. > :01:47.from our Asia business hub in Singapore where Ashley joins me now.

:01:48. > :01:55.Ashley, Samsung are having a tricky time and Apple have a lot to do with

:01:56. > :02:01.that. That is right. Apple is trying to move into the Chinese space with

:02:02. > :02:05.China Mobile. Some say that this will improve its prospects in China

:02:06. > :02:09.but it still faces a lots of competition not only from Samsung

:02:10. > :02:13.but also local Chinese rivals. Analysts have been telling me they

:02:14. > :02:18.believe that Samsung is better placed in China and that is because

:02:19. > :02:23.it shatter GL creating a wide range of devices has proved well in

:02:24. > :02:28.emerging markets. Because of this, they believe that Samsung will do

:02:29. > :02:32.better. That's the good is going on in technology in Asia in general. We

:02:33. > :02:37.had a warning from HTC yesterday, its results were pretty poor. It

:02:38. > :02:46.shows that some of these tech giants in Asia are finding it difficult at

:02:47. > :02:53.the moment. Samsung and HTC have had disappointing results and companies

:02:54. > :02:58.like HP and IBM have had poor results recently. There is

:02:59. > :03:05.apparently one bright spot on the horizon. This could be in the dart

:03:06. > :03:11.services and cloud computing areas. Software that allows your devices to

:03:12. > :03:14.talk to each other. And was believed this could be a growth area in the

:03:15. > :03:18.Asian market and as we move forward. All the while, in spite of all of

:03:19. > :03:24.this, the phone makers will try to get their slice of the market,

:03:25. > :03:27.Samsung, as I said, is trying to create a lots of devices in every

:03:28. > :03:32.sector imaginable. Sunni is trying to do its part, targeting the high

:03:33. > :03:40.end user. Trying to become the apple of the android world and China

:03:41. > :03:47.highway are trying to emulate Samsung. A good update their from

:03:48. > :03:54.Singapore on what is going on in terms of the numbers. What about the

:03:55. > :03:58.number is closer Samsung, Sunni, many are desperate to have the

:03:59. > :04:03.device that will catch everybody's attention. We are talking about the

:04:04. > :04:06.Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show which has managed to escape the

:04:07. > :04:13.crazy weather in the United States. Companies that are showing off their

:04:14. > :04:24.latest device is there are hoping to grab attention. Las Vegas in January

:04:25. > :04:27.and gadgets have taken the place of gamblers as this town's biggest

:04:28. > :04:31.money spinners. Thousands of new products which promised to change

:04:32. > :04:37.the way we are living are fighting for attention. In the preview event,

:04:38. > :04:39.the trends are clear. Is the importance of these. Everything is

:04:40. > :04:46.controlled connected to a smart phone. What is here? This drives as

:04:47. > :04:54.fast as most people can run. If it hits a jump it will get a metre of

:04:55. > :04:59.air. Is a toy? This is an electric toothbrush. It gives you real time

:05:00. > :05:06.information of how well you brush your teeth. It has three members of

:05:07. > :05:12.the family and Lucy has not brushed their teeth for two weeks. Wearable

:05:13. > :05:20.technology is big. This is June. It measures sun exposure and gives

:05:21. > :05:25.personalised sun protection advice. It measures the sun and you read it

:05:26. > :05:28.on your smartphone? There is also the world's first Coast smart phone

:05:29. > :05:32.and a number of devices to measure what is happening to you and your

:05:33. > :05:38.home. From a sleek monitor to mother, which collects information

:05:39. > :05:43.around the House. And there are are aerial vehicles or drones. We took

:05:44. > :05:50.one outside to put it through its paces. What kind of uses are people

:05:51. > :05:56.filing for these vehicles? For agriculture. Monitoring crops.

:05:57. > :06:00.Search and rescue. They can throw some big in the air quickly without

:06:01. > :06:05.having to get a fully manned helicopter around. When it comes to

:06:06. > :06:10.new technology, Las Vegas is the place to see the big picture. Many

:06:11. > :06:20.of the products here may fail to take off. Let's join Rory now. We

:06:21. > :06:24.will get the latest. Nice to see you. We heard a lot about the

:06:25. > :06:28.wearable devices and the other gadgets on display. At the end of

:06:29. > :06:33.the event, who is everybody going to be talking about? That is a very

:06:34. > :06:39.interesting question. We get the big players here. We get Sunni and

:06:40. > :06:44.Samsung and they have had a massive press conference today. New

:06:45. > :06:52.products. Curved televisions. All sorts of productivity. Control your

:06:58. > :07:02.famous director Michael Bay on stage to praise their television and he

:07:03. > :07:13.lost it. His teleprompter went down and he left the stage. There was a

:07:14. > :07:17.light recording -- WACA life recording device which puts

:07:18. > :07:22.everything you do on a timeline. Then there are things making their

:07:23. > :07:28.debut. I met a small British company that has come here with a 3-D

:07:29. > :07:34.printer, 3D printing another big thing this year. They came here on

:07:35. > :07:38.budget fights but they know this is the stage where you want to launch a

:07:39. > :07:47.product and get it to a global audience in a hurry. Thank you. You

:07:48. > :07:51.can read and see and experience a lot more of that event on the

:07:52. > :07:56.website. Rory is posting information all the time. You can follow him on

:07:57. > :08:00.Twitter as well. Let's squeeze in other business stories. But the

:08:12. > :08:15.bank in its 100 year history. The focus is on fighting unemployment

:08:16. > :08:18.and many predict she will maintain low interest rates until the

:08:19. > :08:23.recovery is fully entrenched. She begins on the 1st of February. It is

:08:24. > :08:27.a busy time for the U.S. Senate because it will take a critical test

:08:28. > :08:32.vote on whether to reinstate expired benefit pay-outs for the long-term

:08:33. > :08:34.unemployed. The vote was originally scheduled for Monday evening but was

:08:35. > :08:37.postponed to accommodate senators who have not yet arrived in

:08:38. > :08:43.Washington from their two-week holiday break. Jobless benefits

:08:44. > :08:47.affect 3 million Americans. A report is likely to show that in 2013 it

:08:48. > :08:54.was the strong this year for the UK car market since 2007. Figures from

:08:55. > :08:59.the Society of motor Manufacturers are expected to show that 2.2 6

:09:00. > :09:04.million vehicles were registered last year. That is a 10.5% increase
