0:01:39 > 0:01:43- Two centuries have passed - since the days of Banc y Ddafad Ddu.

0:01:43 > 0:01:48- Since then, the town has been home - to some of Britain's big banks.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50- Barclays, Lloyds and Nat West.

0:01:51 > 0:01:56- Since last year, all three banks - have closed their doors.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03- I'm here today to meet - the lunch club...

0:02:03 > 0:02:07- ..who've braved the cold weather - to reach the Talbot.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11- They've met here monthly - for the past 16 years.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15- They've witnessed major changes here - since then.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19- What effect has closing the banks - had on Tregaron?

0:02:19 > 0:02:22- It's had a negative effect - on the community. Oh, yes, it has.

0:03:23 > 0:03:29- In June, Lampeter will lose another - branch as Nat West leaves the town.

0:03:39 > 0:03:44- Tonight, local residents have - gathered to voice their concerns.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06- Travelling from Cardigan - to Aberystwyth can take an hour.

0:04:06 > 0:04:11- That's very inconvenient - if you run a self-employed business.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16- You don't have time to close - the shop and travel to Aberystwyth.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18- You'll lose money.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24- Local MP, Ben Lake, has raised - the matter in Westminster.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29- He wants the UK Government to do - more to retain high street banks.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25- ..Dilwyn Jenkins has been - farming Gwelfor for 60 years.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35- They've always banked with Nat West - at the Cardigan branch.

0:05:35 > 0:05:40- Late last year, they heard - that changes were planned.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44- We received a letter from them - at the end of the year.

0:05:45 > 0:05:47- I think it was the beginning - of December.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51- They said the branch - was closing down.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- For them it wasn't a problem.

0:05:54 > 0:06:00- They stated our nearest bank - would only be 30 miles away.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04- 30 miles is a long way to go - for a bank interview...

0:06:05 > 0:06:07- ..to see the manager - or ask for help.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12- According to Nat West, financial - transactions in Cardigan...

0:06:12 > 0:06:15- ..have decreased by 14% since 2012.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19- Only 58 customers visit the branch, - on average, every week.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- Nat West claim that other options - will be made available...

0:06:23 > 0:06:27- ..including the use - of the town's post office.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- That hasn't calmed Dilwyn's fears.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48- It means someone else will be aware - of our financial details.

0:08:07 > 0:08:12- Rosslyn Morgan is the clerk - of Llanrwst Town Council.

0:08:12 > 0:08:17- He shows me the situation along - the town's high street, the A470.

0:08:18 > 0:08:23- HSBC were here until last June.

0:08:24 > 0:08:29- HSBC were the last - full-time bank in town.

0:08:30 > 0:08:36- The nearest HSBC branches - are in Llandudno and Colwyn Bay.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40- Public transport isn't the best.

0:08:40 > 0:08:45- Even by car, you're talking about - a journey of two hours or more...

0:08:45 > 0:08:49- ..to get there, - do your business and travel back.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55- At the end of 2017, there was more - bad news for the people of Llanrwst.

0:09:42 > 0:09:47- ..the people of Llanrwst and many - other places, the message is clear.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50- This isn't - a customer-led revolution.

0:09:52 > 0:09:58- It isn't a voluntary choice, - it's being forced upon us.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50- Since then, - the city of London has settled down.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54- Away from the city, - great changes have happened.

0:13:54 > 0:14:00- During the past 10 years, HSBC has - closed 65% of its Welsh branches.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03- Nat West has closed 63%.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08- Between the main banks, HSBC, - Nat West, Barclays and Lloyds...

0:14:09 > 0:14:13- ..518 branches were open in Wales - in 2008.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36- He's managing director of private - international bank JP Morgan.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40- He's also worked - for one of the high street banks.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44- He feels that the sector is - more answerable and responsible...

0:14:44 > 0:14:47- ..than it was - before the 2008 crisis...

0:14:48 > 0:14:51- ..but profits are still the target.

0:14:52 > 0:14:53- Money talks for the banks.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56- They worry little - about the effect on communities.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04- ..what matters is pleasing - customers and shareholders.

0:15:40 > 0:15:45- You have to question the purpose - of the bank in that locality.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00- But the bank, per se, - can't create the economy.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- It's wrong to think of a bank - in that way.

0:17:10 > 0:17:14- Last year we closed the branch - in Prestatyn.

0:17:14 > 0:17:20- Because of that, we bring the - mobile bank here to help customers.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27- A lot of people choose - to do their banking digitally.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31- We understand that not everyone - is comfortable with that.

0:18:36 > 0:18:41- We've spoken to people who'd prefer - to see a bank on the high street.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47- The way people have banked with us - has changed over the years.

0:18:47 > 0:18:52- We understand that not everyone - is comfortable banking online.

0:18:54 > 0:19:00- We've put all these things together - to try and help our customers.

0:19:03 > 0:19:08- In Bala, the departure of another - bank has created concern here too.
