0:01:19 > 0:01:22- ..set off on a 10k sponsored walk - across the city.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27- It's a beautiful day today, - in the sunshine...

0:01:31 > 0:01:34- The aim was to raise awareness - of domestic abuse.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38- Domestic abuse - can mean the abuse of a partner...

0:01:39 > 0:01:42- ..a family member - or someone close...

0:01:42 > 0:01:48- ..and can be physical, emotional, - psychological, sexual or financial.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54- This is Catrin Cooper's - second such walk.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57- Two years ago, she told police...

0:01:57 > 0:02:00- ..that she had been beaten - while she lived in London.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- Only talking to other people - on social media...

0:02:10 > 0:02:14- ..gave her the strength - to do something about her situation.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27- Even going to the beach at the end - of the garden was too much for her.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35- ..and was diagnosed with PTSD, - post traumatic stress disorder.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37- A lot of bad dreams.

0:03:38 > 0:03:39- Panic attacks...

0:03:39 > 0:03:43- ..which mostly happened to me - during the night.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48- During the day, the most tiring - thing was the flashbacks.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56- ..you'd hear something - or someone would say something...

0:03:56 > 0:03:58- ..and it brought the memories back.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02- I could swear - that I was seeing it all over again.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08- The police got a warrant - against the man...

0:04:09 > 0:04:12- ..but couldn't arrest him - because he had moved abroad.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16- Catrin is still pressing - to get him to stand trial.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22- Over the past two years, - there have been times...

0:04:22 > 0:04:25- ..when she has questioned - her reason to live.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29- There were days - when I told my family...

0:04:30 > 0:04:32- ..that I didn't want - to be here any more.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- But he had put the poker - in the fire and burnt me.

0:05:37 > 0:05:42- He wanted to mark me, to scar me, - so that no-one else would have me...

0:07:01 > 0:07:04- For years, I blamed Mam, - but now I know you can't do that.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42- That's why she didn't leave him.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44- She was afraid of what he'd do...

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- ..not just to her - but to the children as well.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54- Once he went, there was no control - over what he could do.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47- Sarah ran out - in her pyjama shorts...

0:08:53 > 0:08:58- She was flown by air ambulance - to a specialist unit in Stoke...

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- We had been on holiday - with each other.

0:11:26 > 0:11:31- Two years into the relationship, - he cheated on me.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33- It went downhill from then on.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39- He says his former partner wanted to - control every aspect of his life...

0:11:39 > 0:11:42- ..who his friends were - and what he did.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45- He also took his wages - to control his finances.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- Over time, he then became violent.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53- We were on holiday when he - first hit me, giving me a black eye.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58- When I got back, people asked me - what happened but I just lied.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01- I told them - I'd walked into something.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- He had so much control over me.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09- It was my fault, basically, and - I had to apologise in the morning.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14- Looking back on that period, - he can't understand why he stayed.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- It felt - like he had been brainwashed.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22- Were you able to talk to anyone at - the time about what was happening?

0:12:22 > 0:12:27- No, I didn't want to appear weak.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- Being a man, especially...

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- ..you have to have this masculinity.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39- He says he was punched and throttled - regularly over two years.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- It was always worse - after his partner had been drinking.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47- There is one night in particular - that he remembers.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51- I ran out of the flat.

0:12:51 > 0:12:56- Near the flat, there was a bridge - over a railway track.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03- I sat on the ledge of the bridge...

0:13:06 > 0:13:08- ..and I was ready to jump.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- I'd had enough of him.

0:13:14 > 0:13:19- He pulled me off the bridge and - started to strangle me on the floor.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22- Then the police arrived.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- When I was in hospital, - he started to text me.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31- He wanted me to come home - and to move in with him...

0:13:31 > 0:13:33- ..and for some reason, I did.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- One minute - I was ready to kill myself...

0:13:36 > 0:13:40- ..and the next minute, - I was moving in with him.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44- He had started a career - as a shop manager...

0:13:44 > 0:13:49- ..but he had to leave one job - because his partner told him to.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54- There were so many other nights when - I had packed my bags ready to leave.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59- For some reason, I waited for him - to return to see the packed bags.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02- You expected him to say...

0:14:02 > 0:14:03- ..sorry.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05- He never did. I always said sorry.

0:14:06 > 0:14:11- If it makes you feel better, I said - "thank you" after he hit me once.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15- The thing is, your mind - is just all over the place.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- You never react - in a normal, sensible way...

0:14:20 > 0:14:23- ..because the situation itself - is so nuts.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34- The relationship ended - after four years.

0:14:34 > 0:14:39- Since then, he has suffered - from regular panic attacks.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47- What advice would you give - to someone in the same situation?

0:14:47 > 0:14:48- Walk away.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52- Tell someone you are close to.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58- The main thing is to walk away, - to get out of it.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01- It's not healthy - to be in that kind of relationship.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14- ..are called to a domestic abuse - incident every 30 seconds.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17- But why do people - beat their partners?

0:15:17 > 0:15:20- One man who was prosecuted - for beating his wife...

0:15:20 > 0:15:22- ..agreed to meet with Catrin.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25- He's been - on an offenders' programme.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29- Because he has children, - he wanted to hide his face.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31- I'm curious to find out...

0:15:31 > 0:15:36- ..what life was like before - this scheme that you've been on.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08- He has been found guilty - of attacking his wife...

0:16:09 > 0:16:12- ..and of criminal damage - after he smashed up a fence...

0:16:24 > 0:16:29- I've worked all week and all she - does is nag me when I come home.

0:16:29 > 0:16:34- I come in on a Friday, and I can - feel the tension in the house.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13- I walked in there just like - the old, arrogant me, thinking...

0:17:14 > 0:17:18- "They can't teach me anything. - I can't learn anything from this."

0:17:21 > 0:17:25- ..to make me start - pointing the finger at myself...

0:17:25 > 0:17:27- ..and not at other people.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30- For years, I would blame - everyone else for my actions...

0:17:34 > 0:17:36- After being on the scheme - for two years...

0:17:37 > 0:17:40- ..he is back in the family home - with his wife and two children.

0:18:11 > 0:18:16- In Caernarfon, Fiona Parry - was almost killed by her husband.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16- ..to release the pressure - on her brain.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22- ..and they're not putting flowers - on my grave.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- A year after the attack, - Catrin went to visit Fiona.

0:19:49 > 0:19:53- ..but I've done so well in a year - to get to where I am today.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56- I keep thinking I'm the same - as I was before.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01- I keep thinking about the Fiona - from two years ago...

0:20:03 > 0:20:07- Now I'm on the road to recovery - from a brain injury.

0:20:07 > 0:20:11- I want to be the woman I was before, - but I can't.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15- Did you ever think he was capable - of doing what he did?

0:20:17 > 0:20:20- I never thought - he'd do what he did to me.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27- I had been beaten by him - and taken it, whatever.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30- But what he did to me this time - was horrendous.

0:20:32 > 0:20:37- If he had only just beaten me - like he'd done before.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39- After all, - I didn't deserve it anyway.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43- No-one on this earth - deserves what I went through.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52- But she can't hide from the tattoos - bearing his name on her body...

0:22:24 > 0:22:30- When I first came home, I was given - some bad advice from a colleague.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34- They told me to take time out, - but to do it quietly.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37- I remember thinking, - "Why am I doing this quietly?"

0:22:37 > 0:22:41- I didn't have anything to be ashamed - of, I didn't ask for this to happen.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49- Catrin's aim - is to change this perception...

0:22:49 > 0:22:54- ..and to prevent other people - from suffering the same pain.

0:22:56 > 0:22:57- Make sure you tell someone.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02- The more you talk about what's going - on and hear it spoken out loud...

0:23:02 > 0:23:05- ..the more you realise - it's blinking wrong.

0:23:05 > 0:23:09- You can then understand that you - shouldn't be in that situation.
