0:00:02 > 0:00:06Every new birth is a nerve-wracking moment for the keepers.

0:00:06 > 0:00:10We're up at the giraffery, but it's not the endangered giraffes that are expecting.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13It's an animal completely on the other end of the scale.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16Yes, the pygmy goats are due to give birth at any moment.

0:00:16 > 0:00:21The keepers are standing by and we'll be following their story on today's Animal Park.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46Coming up on today's Animal Park...

0:00:46 > 0:00:49An abandoned baby goat is in dire straights.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52Can one of the keepers save its life?

0:00:52 > 0:00:57They might be the most ferocious animals at Longleat,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00but will the tigers be tough enough to go for a dip?

0:01:00 > 0:01:02And titanic disaster is on the cards...

0:01:02 > 0:01:07- Don't panic!- ..as Ben takes control of one of the park's brand-new boats.

0:01:07 > 0:01:08Try and keep it straight.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Last winter, and for a second year in a row,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Jonjo, the champion pygmy goat,

0:01:22 > 0:01:26had a busy fortnight up in the East Africa reserve.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33The Longleat herd is predominantly female

0:01:33 > 0:01:36and they don't have their own billy.

0:01:36 > 0:01:41And that's why Jonjo came hotfoot from his home in the Welsh Valleys.

0:01:41 > 0:01:46He's a jobbing stud and he soon got down to business.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51But that was five months ago and now senior warden Bev Evans

0:01:51 > 0:01:54has some predictable, though still exciting, news.

0:01:54 > 0:02:01Well, currently our five female goats are heavily pregnant, due this week.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04And it's their second time.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08We had births last year and, hopefully, our five girls

0:02:08 > 0:02:10will be very successful this year

0:02:10 > 0:02:15and we should have quite a few kids, hopefully. This is Sour.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20Sour's one of our friendliest goats and probably noisiest, actually.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22She did incredibly well last year.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26She had our twins. So, hopefully, she'll do just as well this year.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31Our girls are looking incredibly big.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34I would say, but obviously I can't say for certain,

0:02:34 > 0:02:38that a lot of them are carrying twins, they are that big, very round.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Also their udders are beginning to drop, which is a sign that they are very imminent.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45We're keeping an extra special eye on them at the moment.

0:02:46 > 0:02:53And well they might, because Bev and the team remember only too well what happened last year.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58For most of the herd, it was the first time they'd ever been pregnant

0:02:58 > 0:03:01and, when they began to give birth, things started to go wrong.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09Sour did all right, but most of the other nannies' kids were still-born.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Lily had the worst time of all.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15She was in such distress that the vet, Duncan Williams,

0:03:15 > 0:03:20had to be called to carry out an emergency Caesarian.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Bev was there, along with head of section Andy Hayton.

0:03:25 > 0:03:30For the sake of the babies, the operation was done just under a local anaesthetic.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Just feeling in there for the uterus.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Grab the inside of the uterus.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41It took just moments to get the first kid out.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43There were no signs of life.

0:03:43 > 0:03:48Swinging the baby is to clear fluid from the lungs.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Massaging is to try and get their system going.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59In fact, there were two.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Lily was carrying twins.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06But there was never any hope.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10By the time he started to do the stitches, Duncan had discovered what happened.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16Unfortunately, the placenta was detached already,

0:04:16 > 0:04:18so the kids had died in uterus,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20probably some time during the night.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28At least Lily did make a full recovery.

0:04:28 > 0:04:33But when birthing time was over, the final count for the whole herd was pretty grim.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Out of nine kids carried to term, there were three still alive.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43So, of course, this year, right now, tensions are running high.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47As Bev settles them into the barn for the night, it's anyone's guess what

0:04:47 > 0:04:51she'll find later on and who will be the first.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55If I had to put my money on it, I'd either go for Sour or for Prawn.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59They're looking like their stomachs are starting to change shape,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02and their back-end's very puffy. Their udders are down.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07Also they sometimes start bleating, not to me, but to themselves and that's a sign that,

0:05:07 > 0:05:11you know, there's possible movement and the kids are about to come.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15So, yes, we'll just have to wait and see.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19We'll be back later, when the very first babies arrive

0:05:19 > 0:05:23and let's just hope that this year goes a little better than last.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Many of the park's residents are fond of a refreshing swim,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40from the hippos basking in Half Mile Lake

0:05:40 > 0:05:43to the sea lions making a splash.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46But there are some animals you might not to expect

0:05:46 > 0:05:48to see taking a little dip, the tigers.

0:05:48 > 0:05:54These shots are of the old gang, Shandi, Sona and Kadu.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Sadly, Shandi and Sona have now died

0:05:57 > 0:06:03and much loved Kadu is an old lady and prefers to spend her time indoors.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06But there are three new tigers at the park

0:06:06 > 0:06:09and the keepers are keen to see whether they'll enjoy a swim.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Before they can be realised from the tiger house,

0:06:11 > 0:06:17I've been asked to drive up some rather large machinery to help prepare the pool.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21I'm out in the tiger enclosure, obviously, without tigers.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25Well, I hope so, but with keeper Bob Trollope.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29And it's a big day here because the pond is going to be filled up...

0:06:29 > 0:06:31- It is.- ..for the tigers.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32- You've already made a start.- Yep.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36So we've got to get this next tank-load in.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38- Yep.- How do we go about doing that?

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Just take the pipe off of here, OK?

0:06:40 > 0:06:45And just chuck it in there. Mind you don't get wet though, Kate.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Oh, yeah! This is the comedy bit, isn't it? OK, so just...

0:06:48 > 0:06:51- Just chuck it in there. - Oh, look at that.- And that's it.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55- Brilliant. Now, obviously, fairly new tigers.- Yeah.

0:06:55 > 0:07:00Never seen this pond filled before.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Why is it important for them to have water in the enclosure?

0:07:03 > 0:07:09Well, tigers will actively seek out water to cool down on a lovely, hot summer's day.

0:07:09 > 0:07:10Just like this one, yeah.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14And they will go there and lay in it just to keep cool.

0:07:14 > 0:07:20Oh, really? Cos you think cats, you know, domestic cats seem to actively avoid being anywhere near water.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Yeah, they do. - Tigers are completely different?

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Completely different. And lions.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29We've had ponds in the lion sections and they don't go anywhere near them, apart from to drink.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32- Really?- The tigers will use this for all sorts of things.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35In the past we've had them sort of laying there for hours on end.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37- They drink from it.- Can they swim?

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Is it something they can actually physically do?

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Tigers are extremely good swimmers and if they need to get across

0:07:43 > 0:07:47a river or a lake as such, they can swim very well.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Do you think it will be Soundari who will be the first over here,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53the first to check it out and see what she thinks?

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Primarily, I think Soundari will be the one.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00So we're going to do is take the tractor out of the way, let the tigers out,

0:08:00 > 0:08:04and join us later to see what they make of their new swimming pool.

0:08:11 > 0:08:16There's been some breaking news back up in the goat house.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20Sour, the nanny, has given birth to three little kids.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22But there's a problem.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Pygmy goats only have two teats,

0:08:27 > 0:08:31which makes it hard for them to care for three babies.

0:08:31 > 0:08:36So the mother will often reject and abandon one of them.

0:08:36 > 0:08:41Already, it looks like Sour's decided to ignore the smallest kid.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46It may seem hard, but it's the natural way.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Bev Evans, who looks after the goats,

0:08:49 > 0:08:53is giving Sour one last chance to recognise her most-needy baby.

0:09:00 > 0:09:07Sadly, she just doesn't want to know, so now it's up to Bev to try and save its life.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12She's brought the kid into the staff room, where it's warmer.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Of course, nobody ever wants to take a baby from its mother,

0:09:16 > 0:09:18but this is a matter of life and death.

0:09:20 > 0:09:25The kid is a little girl and her body temperature is dangerously low.

0:09:25 > 0:09:31We're just taking over Sour's job and stimulating her and getting her cleaned up, get her dry.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35And we're just trying to see how she's going to do really.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38It's been a little bit touch and go.

0:09:39 > 0:09:44It's hard to say if she's gonna survive or not.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46She won't survive long without milk

0:09:46 > 0:09:48and the best place to get that is from Mum.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54So head of section Andy Hayton is trying to get some from Sour.

0:09:54 > 0:10:00So this will give the baby the best head start you can possibly wish for.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Good stuff. Lovely.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08Let's try and put it all into you.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12This special first milk is called colostrum.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16It's full of antibodies to help protect newborn babies from disease

0:10:16 > 0:10:20and infection in the first few days of their precarious lives.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25But if she's to survive, she'll need a lot more milk than this.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29- She swallowed that. - Swallowed did she?

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Yeah, just now.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35She's too weak to take any more milk right now.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38In fact, she doesn't look too good.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42Sour's only had twins before,

0:10:42 > 0:10:45she's never had triplets.

0:10:45 > 0:10:46So she's probably quite occupied

0:10:46 > 0:10:49with giving birth to the second one and then the third.

0:10:49 > 0:10:50And by that time,

0:10:51 > 0:10:53this little one had got a bit cold

0:10:53 > 0:10:57and wasn't really bleating as much and wasn't really standing as much.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59So once the other two were up and about

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Sour's attention kind of turned to them.

0:11:02 > 0:11:03Is that better?

0:11:07 > 0:11:11She's perked up a little bit and then she's gone a bit sleepy again,

0:11:11 > 0:11:14so just keep carrying on with this,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17just trying to give her a bit more energy really.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20As I said, she's still very weak.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24Clearly, she's fading fast.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28- Maybe we'll give her a bit more of that kickstart in a minute. - Mm. She's trying.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30- Is she taking it?- OK.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34As a last resort, Andy's trying an emergency treatment,

0:11:34 > 0:11:39a kind of pick me up medicine that's used by farmers on struggling newborn lambs.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46It's like a vitamin, mineral type of supplement-type thing

0:11:46 > 0:11:48and it just gives them a real boost.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53It's kind of kill or cure almost.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57But it's not looking good.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59She's not as perky as she was.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03It's almost sometimes like they just quit.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06It's what happens.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11She's not gone yet.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13She's not gone yet, no.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19But Andy and Bev know there's really not much hope

0:12:19 > 0:12:22and it may only be a matter of time.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Later on, we'll find out what happens to the poor little kid.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Amongst his many adventures and courageous exploits,

0:12:37 > 0:12:41you may remember that our Ben once rowed across the Atlantic

0:12:41 > 0:12:43along with Olympic oarsman James Cracknell.

0:12:43 > 0:12:49For someone to take on such a serious piece of water in such a tiny craft,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52they'd have to be pretty keen on boating.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55So when Ben heard that Longleat has got two new tour boats,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58we couldn't keep him away, though this time

0:12:58 > 0:13:00he has agreed to keep his clothes on.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03I love messy around in boats.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06And today, there's a real treat in store for me,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09because I'm going to learn to drive a boat

0:13:09 > 0:13:14in a lake filled with hippos, sea lions and an island with gorillas.

0:13:14 > 0:13:19Now, up here is head of boats... Morning, Bill.

0:13:19 > 0:13:20- Hello, Ben, my friend.- How are you?

0:13:20 > 0:13:23- Fine.- You're going to teach me how to drive the Lady Lenka.

0:13:23 > 0:13:27- This is one of the new boats here on Half Mile Lake, isn't it? - I'll do my best.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30I am itching to get out on the water. Shall we?

0:13:30 > 0:13:32What's the first thing we have to do?

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Well, I'd like to show you the controls of the boat, for a start.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37- OK.- Up for forward.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40- Yup.- Down for reverse. Wheel for port and starboard.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43Throttle for however many revs you want.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48We're clear of everything. Do you want to take over?

0:13:48 > 0:13:50- If you trust me, absolutely.- Right.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58Obviously, just want to avoid this island, but this is where Nico lives.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Yes, Nico's on here. Try and keep it straight.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Push the throttle down to just give it a bit more power.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08No, keep it down. Don't take it off.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11You've taken all the revs off. We've got no power at all.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Oh dear! I'm not doing very well!

0:14:13 > 0:14:16No, you're doing OK. Watch your back cos you've got to keep

0:14:16 > 0:14:1730 feet away from the island.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19So many things to think about.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22The radio going. I'm worried about... Ooh! Is that OK?

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- Is it still turning to the right? - Yeah.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27I want to turn it the other way now. Now I've got it in...

0:14:27 > 0:14:30The boat only goes in the direction you turn the wheel,

0:14:30 > 0:14:31whether it's forward or backwards.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33So much to think about.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37Next thing here, you've got Jo-Jo standing up on the tree there.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40We call it a "tree lion" at Longleat.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42A tree lion!

0:14:42 > 0:14:45Now, I want you to concentrate a bit here. Here is the tricky part.

0:14:45 > 0:14:50With any vessel, the most challenging manoeuvre is landing the boat.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53Just take a few revs off. Take it down one notch there.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55That's it. Lovely.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58I imagine this is the hardest part, the...

0:14:58 > 0:15:03Very hard and you don't do anything other than follow precisely what I tell you, please.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06Start your turn as if you're going down the cut down there.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Keep turning, but keep going in that direction first.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12Come further down, or you'll land too high up the quay.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16Push some revs on it, you're not going round fast enough. That's it.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Watch it. OK?

0:15:18 > 0:15:20- Yup, good.- It's fine.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22- It's quite nerve-wracking.- Yeah.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26- OK.- More.- More revs?- More revs, yeah. All right, take the revs off.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29- Put it into reverse now. - Put it into reverse?

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Yeah, that has the same effect. Hold it in reverse.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Wheel right over. Now forward gear.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38Hard over to me in forward gear. Forward gear! You're out of gear.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Don't have it out of gear, or you're going to go...

0:15:41 > 0:15:43Don't panic. Just go slowly.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45- Hard over to you? - Yep. Take it out of gear.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47Take the revs off. Now right up the quay.

0:15:47 > 0:15:48BEEPING

0:15:48 > 0:15:51Oh, you've stopped the engine. Oh dear.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57- You took the revs right off. - I took the revs right off.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00- Keep the wheel hard to the left. - Hard to the left.- Just keep going.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03Little bit of forward motion.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06Now then, I want you to put the wheel hard over to the left...

0:16:06 > 0:16:09- Hard over to the left, yeah. - ..and put it into reverse.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11- Into reverse?- Just very gently.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13- Yup.- That's it, that's it. Hold it.

0:16:13 > 0:16:14- Out of gear.- Out of gear.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17That's it. Take the revs off.

0:16:17 > 0:16:18You've landed the boat.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22That's it. Leave it like that.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Now, what you've done, you've brought it to the point that

0:16:25 > 0:16:29- when she's tied the boat up, we can open this gate...- Right.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32And we're right opposite the entrance. Just like that.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35- Dah-dah!- Now, not everybody can do what you've just done.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37They sometimes bang the quay.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41So how do you rate me, then, out of ten as a...?

0:16:41 > 0:16:44- I'd give that a nine out of ten instantly...- Nine out of ten!

0:16:44 > 0:16:45For your first go at landing it.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48So I could have a job here one day?

0:16:48 > 0:16:50- Oh, absolutely. Oh, yeah.- Fantastic.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52Bill, thank you very much. Thank you.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56There's hope for me yet, even if I do have to wipe my brow.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58That was pretty scary.

0:16:58 > 0:17:03It's been one hour since the newborn kid

0:17:03 > 0:17:06was brought inside to the staff room.

0:17:07 > 0:17:13She had to be rescued after being rejected by her mother, the nanny goat called Sour.

0:17:13 > 0:17:19Bev Evans is trying to keep the baby alive with body massage and tiny feeds of mother's milk,

0:17:19 > 0:17:23but clearly the kid's life is hanging in the balance.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27Right now, Bev's desperately trying to keep the baby warm.

0:17:27 > 0:17:28Brought in a hot-water bottle

0:17:28 > 0:17:31just to try and warm it up from all angles really

0:17:31 > 0:17:34and it's starting to perk up a little bit.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38Starting to lift its head, but only like in fits and starts.

0:17:38 > 0:17:43It's not really jumping for joy yet.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45This kid was rejected because Mum, Sour,

0:17:45 > 0:17:48couldn't look after three babies at once.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51But now head of section Andy Hayton

0:17:51 > 0:17:53has spotted a problem with one of Sour's other kids,

0:17:53 > 0:17:57so has called in vet Paul Higgs to take a look.

0:17:57 > 0:18:03Five hours after being born, one of them still can't stand up properly.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06Now, there is no strength in it whatsoever.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Whenever he was putting weight on it,

0:18:08 > 0:18:10his back legs were both just splaying.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Yeah. He's quite weak.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14I think his main problem is his toes aren't...

0:18:14 > 0:18:15If you put his toes flat,

0:18:15 > 0:18:19he can't actually stand on the bottoms of his feet at the moment,

0:18:19 > 0:18:24cos his tendons are all contracted down.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27The problem was caused by having three babies in the womb.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30They were squashed together with no room to stretch,

0:18:30 > 0:18:34so the tendons in his back legs haven't developed properly.

0:18:34 > 0:18:39Generally, they come right within 24 hours. Otherwise, we could...

0:18:39 > 0:18:43If he's still not right tomorrow afternoon

0:18:43 > 0:18:46then we can stick a splint on them, that's the other thing.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48But considering it's both of them,

0:18:48 > 0:18:50we don't want to be splinting both his legs

0:18:50 > 0:18:53and usually they just come right all by themselves.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56While the vet's been in the barn,

0:18:56 > 0:19:00Bev's been waiting in the staff room with the poor little kid.

0:19:00 > 0:19:05She was fading away, but now there's been a minor miracle.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23About an hour ago she was still wrapped up in a towel,

0:19:23 > 0:19:25hardly lifting her head.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29Then I just took the towel off her and she just stood straight up,

0:19:29 > 0:19:32had a wee and she's been like this ever since.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37Yeah, with little young ones like lambs and kids,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40they've got very little energy when they come out, very little reserves,

0:19:40 > 0:19:44so if they get cold, they rapidly use those up.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48And once they've warmed up, they tend to come back to life quite quickly.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52She's quite good. If you stick your finger in her mouth,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54she sucks really nice and strong now,

0:19:54 > 0:19:57so she should be quite happy to go on to the bottle now,

0:19:57 > 0:20:00- rather than just squirting it into her mouth.- That's good.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02- And she's got loads of energy.- Good.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05She looks as good as the other two now, doesn't she?

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Yeah, she does, yeah. Bless her.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10It's turned out pretty well, as you can see.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Bit of a shock actually taking off the towel

0:20:13 > 0:20:15and she just stood straight up.

0:20:15 > 0:20:19So from nearly at death's door to up and about and quite lively.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21Yeah, really pleased.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25A long day, but, yeah, a very good day, in the end.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27So far, so good.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30But now Bev and Andy will have to raise her by hand,

0:20:30 > 0:20:33bottle feeding her day and night.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37With four other pregnant nannies due to give birth any day now,

0:20:37 > 0:20:39they could be in for a busy time.

0:20:48 > 0:20:54I'm out in the tiger enclosure with keeper Bob Trollope and just over my shoulder is Soundari.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58The tigers have been let out. We were here earlier filling their pond.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01She is supposed to be taking an interest in the pond,

0:21:01 > 0:21:04but she seems to be taking more interest in us in this Land Rover.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08She does. She's a mischievous little thing, as you know, Kate.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10- I'll just keep an eye on her a minute...- Yeah.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13Cos she's a bit of a so and so.

0:21:13 > 0:21:20So we might need to make a little dash for it if she starts biting our tyres.

0:21:20 > 0:21:25What we did was put some meat around the edge of the pond once it was filled up with water.

0:21:25 > 0:21:30There's a nice, big, very hard, plastic ball in there for them to play with.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33So really she should be finding that irresistible.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36As the tigers are so new to the park,

0:21:36 > 0:21:40the keepers are still learning what they do and don't like.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42They do like to stalk the cars,

0:21:42 > 0:21:46but there's a chance they may not like the water.

0:21:46 > 0:21:51But it's not long before Soundari's curiosity means that she just has to try it out.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53She's spotted the ball in the pond...

0:21:53 > 0:21:56- Oh, let's see.- And, hopefully...

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Oh, there she goes. Quite quick.

0:21:58 > 0:22:03She's suddenly realised there was something different in the park.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Straight into the water.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07Not fazed by the water at all.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09Oh, that's lovely!

0:22:09 > 0:22:11No fear of the water at all.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Look at her!

0:22:22 > 0:22:24She suddenly looks very kittenish.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28Oh, this is lovely to see this!

0:22:28 > 0:22:30I bet Kadu would be very, very proud of her.

0:22:30 > 0:22:35Cos Kadu was always really the first one in the water.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Yeah, she was and she's...

0:22:37 > 0:22:40- This is a mini Kadu, without a doubt.- Yeah.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42When she was younger, it was exactly the same.

0:22:42 > 0:22:47She was mischievous, always investigating new things and enjoying it.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49Oh, it's fantastic!

0:22:49 > 0:22:52The other two are intrigued.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56They're sat up watching,

0:22:56 > 0:22:58but they're not brave enough to come across.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01I think she might be in here for most of the day, Bob.

0:23:01 > 0:23:05She looks like a very, very happy cat.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07Well, Bob, thank you very much indeed.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11We are going to leave this extremely happy tiger playing in her paddling pool.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14And we'll leave you with a happy sight of her.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32When Sour the nanny goat gave birth to three kids,

0:23:32 > 0:23:36no-one really thought the tiny, weak one was going to survive.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40But now, one week later, she is the comeback kid.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53Pretty amazing comeback of all comebacks,

0:23:53 > 0:23:54I think, this one, isn't it?

0:23:54 > 0:23:57There were points were we actually thought it was dead.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00So it's nice when things like this happen.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03She came home with me on the first night

0:24:03 > 0:24:08and she stayed at my house probably a good five or six days,

0:24:08 > 0:24:10because she was just so incredibly weak.

0:24:10 > 0:24:14She's special in lots of ways.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18She's called Bubble, because she sits after she's had her milk

0:24:18 > 0:24:21and blows big bubbles out the side of her mouth.

0:24:21 > 0:24:22So, yeah, a special character.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29You may have noticed that Bubble isn't the only new kid on the block.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31In fact, since Sour gave birth,

0:24:31 > 0:24:34four of the other nanny goats also had theirs.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37There are baby goats everywhere.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41Male, male...

0:24:41 > 0:24:44male.

0:24:47 > 0:24:48Five, yeah.

0:24:48 > 0:24:49Five males, four females.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Bubble still needs to be bottle fed

0:24:54 > 0:24:58and now she's not the only one Bev's got to take special care of.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00I couldn't believe it, two sets of triplets.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02Oh my God! That was just a shock.

0:25:02 > 0:25:07Obviously, we've got two which we're hand-rearing on the bottle, as you can see.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09Very healthy and hungry.

0:25:09 > 0:25:13All together and all playing around in the sunshine, doing really well.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25The pygmy goats may be smaller than most of the other residents

0:25:25 > 0:25:27of the East African reserve,

0:25:27 > 0:25:30but at round-up time, they can be a lot more trouble.

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Come on, goats!

0:25:42 > 0:25:47We'll be checking back on the pygmy goats and all their kids later in the series.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57From the newest kids on the block to some of the oldest.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02These pelicans have lived at the park for decades

0:26:02 > 0:26:04and are one of the world's largest flying birds.

0:26:04 > 0:26:10Their enormous wingspan can reach over 2.5 metres,

0:26:10 > 0:26:14allowing them to swoop down gracefully to catch their prey and,

0:26:14 > 0:26:18being such large animals, they can certainly build up quite an appetite,

0:26:18 > 0:26:20as Kate and I are about to find out.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28We're up with keeper Michelle Stevens to feed the pink-back pelicans.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Michelle, we've got a big bucket of mackerel. What do we need to do?

0:26:31 > 0:26:33Just feed them individually.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36- Just throw it?- Yeah, just throw it. Make sure everyone gets a piece.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39- There you are. Oh, my goodness! - They can be quite...

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Look at their beaks!

0:26:41 > 0:26:44They're absolutely enormous!

0:26:44 > 0:26:45Absolutely enormous.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Now, just being this close to them,

0:26:47 > 0:26:51- just looking at this one at the back here, that's eating...- Yeah.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54It looks different from the others. Is it a juvenile?

0:26:54 > 0:26:57- It's a different species altogether. - Oh, really?

0:26:57 > 0:26:58Yeah. It's a spot-billed pelican.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01I thought you only had pink-backed pelicans.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04No, we have 12 pink-backs and one individual spot-billed.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Taking your hand with it!

0:27:06 > 0:27:10So how come you ended up with one of an entirely different species?

0:27:10 > 0:27:13Not quite sure. We just acquired four in the 1960s some time

0:27:13 > 0:27:17and he is just the remaining one that we have left really.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20So he could be, what, 40, 50 years old?

0:27:20 > 0:27:2240-plus. Yeah.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25And that's common for pelicans to live to that long, is it?

0:27:25 > 0:27:26They could live to about 40 or 50.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30We don't really know much about the spot-billed pelican.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33There aren't many in captivity. They're quite rare in the wild.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Where would you see them in the wild?

0:27:35 > 0:27:37They're native to the Philippines, that area.

0:27:37 > 0:27:43So mixing with Africa pelicans, but seems to be very happy with them.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45Yeah, yeah. Pretty much, yeah.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49We have tried to get a female for him, but no success, unfortunately.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51- Ooh!- He's quite fond of the other females.

0:27:51 > 0:27:56- We don't let him breed though!- In 50 years of this park, he must have seen some things and some changes.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00- He could tell a few tales. - Michelle, thank you very much.

0:28:00 > 0:28:01Sadly, that's all we've got time for.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04Here's what's coming up on the next Animal Park.

0:28:06 > 0:28:11How do you stop over 70 monkeys vandalising visitors' cars?

0:28:11 > 0:28:16That's the mission for deputy head warden Ian Turner, and some very heavy machinery.

0:28:18 > 0:28:23I catch up with the giraffes and discover it's not only their necks that are exceptionally long.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27'And I'll be calling on Nico the gorilla

0:28:27 > 0:28:29'to see if there's life in the old dog yet.'

0:28:29 > 0:28:33Don't you even think about pinching my bum!

0:28:33 > 0:28:36So don't miss the next Animal Park.
