0:01:45 > 0:01:46..and their own lives?

0:01:46 > 0:01:50Because it's not just their dogs that need to change.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59# Yeah, I'm the best thing ever... #

0:01:59 > 0:02:03Meet part-time rapper and dog breeder Mishak Foster

0:02:03 > 0:02:07from Wembley in London, and his Staffy cross, Trouble.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12My first dog, three years old.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14He's my favourite, innit?

0:02:14 > 0:02:16Good boy.

0:02:17 > 0:02:2121-year-old Mishak's bred and sold dozens of puppies from Trouble...

0:02:22 > 0:02:25I do sell dogs. It's easy to get business

0:02:25 > 0:02:27when you're walking with the pups, you know?

0:02:27 > 0:02:30- ..and he'll sell them to anyone. - You got Facebook?

0:02:30 > 0:02:32- Yeah.- Add me on Facebook.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35He's the daddy of, like, 50 puppies.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Know what I'm saying, innit? Money maker.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43He doesn't believe that dogs should be neutered.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Those lazy people that turn round and say,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50"It'd be easier to control the dog if you cut the balls of it."

0:02:50 > 0:02:51The dog hates you, know what I'm saying?

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Hates you. You cut his balls off.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59- Cross the road.- And Mishak doesn't think his dogs need to be on a lead.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03I can walk him off the lead already.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Ah! Ah! Ah! Oi, oi!

0:03:07 > 0:03:09The pigeon's in the road, grab him!

0:03:09 > 0:03:12His attitude has had tragic consequences.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Local dog warden Angela Moruzzi has had to pick up the pieces.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19His four-month-old mongrel

0:03:19 > 0:03:22escaped from his garden - which wasn't secured -

0:03:22 > 0:03:25and was involved in a road traffic accident

0:03:25 > 0:03:27where it got killed by a bus.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31He was inconsolable, it was... It was heartbreaking.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Because of his lack of responsibility,

0:03:34 > 0:03:36his actions caused the death of his dog.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39Certain people say, "Oh, it's only a dog, it's only a dog."

0:03:39 > 0:03:42It's not only a dog. It's more than that.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Like, it's more than that. It's a companion, you know? It's a friend.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49But there's no doubting Mishak's devotion to his dogs.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51They're like little family as well. Yes?

0:03:54 > 0:03:56My dogs mean everything to me, really.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Mishak inherited his love of dogs from his mum.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03He tragically witnessed her death at just nine years old.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06When his mum died, it was, um...

0:04:06 > 0:04:08It was a terrible time for him.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11You can see it when he has the dogs and he interacts,

0:04:11 > 0:04:12and I can see how much it's...

0:04:14 > 0:04:17How much... Yeah, he misses his mother.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23I was a mummy's boy. I was with her 24/7, inseparable.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Inseparable.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29But I have to get on with it, innit?

0:04:30 > 0:04:34But Angela thinks Mishak's not a responsible dog owner.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36He needs to limit the amount of dogs he owns,

0:04:36 > 0:04:39he needs to microchip all his dogs,

0:04:39 > 0:04:41he needs to make sure that when they're out in public

0:04:41 > 0:04:44they're on a lead and, most important,

0:04:44 > 0:04:47they need to be neutered so that he can't breed.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51The time has come that Mishak needs to take responsibility for his actions.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55But Mishak's adamant that his way is the best way.

0:04:57 > 0:05:02If I was put in a position where a dog trainer told me to do something

0:05:02 > 0:05:05I'd tell them, "This is the way I do it,

0:05:05 > 0:05:08"cos, even though you might be top dog, yeah?

0:05:08 > 0:05:11"You could still learn something from me, you know."

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Good boy, get down, what's that?

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Meet Amy Bennett.

0:05:17 > 0:05:22A glamour model from Berkshire, and her unruly Jack Russell, Mylo.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24He doesn't like the postman.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31The postman literally, kind of, puts the post in and runs away.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34The problem is Amy's too soft on Mylo

0:05:34 > 0:05:36and has given up trying to control him.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Mylo, here.

0:05:38 > 0:05:39Come here.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Mylo!

0:05:41 > 0:05:44It's more effort than it's worth to, kind of,

0:05:44 > 0:05:46try and get him out of the habit now.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Give it up. Mylo!

0:05:48 > 0:05:49An attitude that could end in disaster.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51CAR APPROACHES Oi, Oi.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Come on. Oi. Oi!

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- Mylo, come on.- Amy bought Mylo on a whim from a breeder

0:06:00 > 0:06:02without her boyfriend Ryan's agreement.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04It was, like, a really last minute thing.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07I woke up one day, was at work, got bored,

0:06:07 > 0:06:10looked on the internet, found this puppy,

0:06:10 > 0:06:14fell in love with the picture and then we had a dog in the evening.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18The dog is playing havoc with their love life.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20Separating us from having a little snog, or something like that,

0:06:20 > 0:06:24you know, he's a very jealous dog.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Mylo, let go.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Let go.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Mylo's arrival has also driven a wedge

0:06:31 > 0:06:33between Amy and her mum Lesley,

0:06:33 > 0:06:37who is committed to helping rescue dogs.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39She wasn't best pleased that Mylo came from a breeder.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Good boy. Happy?

0:06:41 > 0:06:43'She rushed into it, gung ho.'

0:06:43 > 0:06:46I was disappointed and I wish she'd just taken a few deep breaths

0:06:46 > 0:06:49and thought it through a little bit more.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51And as Mylo's behaviour has got worse,

0:06:51 > 0:06:53so has Amy's relationship with her mum.

0:06:53 > 0:06:59When he started getting a little bit bigger and more hyperactive

0:06:59 > 0:07:03she, kind of, stopped talking to me, really.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07Mylo is a naughty dog and he doesn't really listen.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09He doesn't know when enough's enough.

0:07:09 > 0:07:15It's obviously very hard because she won't let me and Mylo stay there.

0:07:15 > 0:07:16Good boy.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22Like Mishak, a death has affected Amy's relationship with dogs,

0:07:22 > 0:07:26but this time it was the trauma of losing her childhood dog, Suzie.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32She lived till she was 17, and I was 17 when she passed away

0:07:32 > 0:07:34so she'd literally been there all my life.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37It was like having, like, a little sister.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40She used to put the little Jack Russell, Suzie,

0:07:40 > 0:07:44into the buggy and push her round the garden.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Yeah, the day that she passed away

0:07:46 > 0:07:49was probably the worst day of my life.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52It was horrible. Ooh!

0:07:55 > 0:07:57Amy's reached crisis point.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Because she's too soft on Mylo,

0:08:00 > 0:08:03he's out of control and it's putting him in danger.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06I think it has come to the point where something has to be done

0:08:06 > 0:08:09because I'm always going to have a poor relationship with my mum

0:08:09 > 0:08:12if it stays the same.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17There are many schools of thought about how best to control dogs,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20but experts agree the majority of problems are caused by the owner,

0:08:20 > 0:08:23not the dog, and it's the owner that needs fixing first.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29So Mishak and Amy will be leaving their dogs at home

0:08:29 > 0:08:32and jetting off to the other side of the globe.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35They'll spend a week with some of the world's top experts

0:08:35 > 0:08:38in dog care and behaviour. If they fix themselves,

0:08:38 > 0:08:42- will they fix their canine crisis at home?- In a suitcase, yay!

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Meet Aussie Sue Conroy,

0:08:46 > 0:08:49dog expert and boss of Melbourne's Lost Dogs Home,

0:08:49 > 0:08:51and the woman to teach the Brits a lesson.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54We're the biggest shelter in the southern hemisphere,

0:08:54 > 0:08:56we see about 20,000 animals per year

0:08:56 > 0:08:59and I believe that's twice the size of the Battersea Dogs Home.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01It's very exciting.

0:09:01 > 0:09:02Hello.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06Sue and her team try to find happy new homes for unwanted dogs.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Oh, good luck, good luck.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13But the home is bursting at the seams with dogs bought on a whim

0:09:13 > 0:09:18and as a result of irresponsible breeding to create dangerous dogs,

0:09:18 > 0:09:20and that makes Sue angry.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24We castrate a lot of dogs in here, sometimes you think,

0:09:24 > 0:09:27"Well, maybe we should be doing the owners, not the dog."

0:09:28 > 0:09:32There's so many to deal with every day. There are going to be some tough points

0:09:32 > 0:09:35in the week that it's going to be really challenging for them emotionally.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39The Brits will have to muck in, even getting involved

0:09:39 > 0:09:43in the heartbreaking task of putting dogs to sleep.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47The buck stops here, and it's brave people that work here

0:09:47 > 0:09:50that have to make these decisions every day.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Sue's serious about the level of commitment

0:09:53 > 0:09:56she expects from the Brits.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00It's really important that my life's work

0:10:00 > 0:10:04isn't ruined by a couple of emotional Brits who can't cope.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06Yay, you come with me, baby!

0:10:06 > 0:10:09You come with me.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13But if Amy and Mishak can't take responsibility for their own dogs,

0:10:13 > 0:10:15how will they be able to look after 190?

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Off we go.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Mishak and Amy don't know it, but Sue's going to try the impossible.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29She wants the Brits to turn two stray dogs into perfect pooches

0:10:29 > 0:10:33and find them new homes. The Brits have less than a week

0:10:33 > 0:10:36to successfully train the dogs to behave,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38or the future of the dogs is uncertain.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41I guess if we don't see enough progress,

0:10:41 > 0:10:45they may be put to sleep because we can't adopt them out.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50- Mishak.- Mishak. My name's Amy, nice to meet you. You all right?

0:10:59 > 0:11:03Mishak and Amy have arrived in mid-winter Melbourne.

0:11:03 > 0:11:04This looks like Harlem.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06You look scared.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08I just don't know what to expect, at all.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13- Lost Dogs' Home!- Lost Dogs' Home! - SHE SQUEALS

0:11:13 > 0:11:15- Hello.- Aw...

0:11:17 > 0:11:20- Welcome.- Hi.- Hello.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23Hi. My name is Sue, I'm the general manager of operations

0:11:23 > 0:11:25here at the home - for nearly 25 years,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28so there's not a lot of things that I haven't seen

0:11:28 > 0:11:30as far as dogs and their owners.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34So, one of our core activities here is to take in lost dogs.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36We're going to try and team you up with a couple of dogs

0:11:36 > 0:11:39that, at this point in time, we're going to struggle

0:11:39 > 0:11:44to find them new homes. They've been abandoned, they're out of control and we're going to team you up

0:11:44 > 0:11:46with our head trainer so you can work with those dogs

0:11:46 > 0:11:48and hopefully, by the end of your stay,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51we can find them lifetime homes.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54By training up strays and finding them new owners,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57the Brits will also build skills for their own dogs at home.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00But first, Sue needs to know what they're made of.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02Some buckets, some shovels,

0:12:02 > 0:12:06cos the important part of the morning is cleaning. Same for you.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09- Thank you.- It's not glamorous, it's not going to be a holiday.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Let's get going, come on. And we're on the clock, guys.

0:12:12 > 0:12:17There's a good reason Sue's putting them straight to work.

0:12:17 > 0:12:18We've got an hour and 20 minutes,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21there's about 40 pens for them to clean.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23I hope they're pretty quick at getting changed.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27Having someone boss me about like that, like, "Chop, chop."

0:12:27 > 0:12:30It's like, I've only just got here.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35I do this on the reg at my house, innit?

0:12:35 > 0:12:37I have eight dogs, so it's a lot of work.

0:12:37 > 0:12:41But this isn't the kind of work model Amy is used to.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43I don't do pooper scoops at home,

0:12:43 > 0:12:47we just let it, fertilise in the garden.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55Oi, down. It stinks in here. Really bad.

0:12:57 > 0:13:02- Careful.- Amy's inexperience at controlling dogs is showing through.

0:13:02 > 0:13:03Oh, shit!

0:13:05 > 0:13:08How'd he get out? Come here.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10The Brits are wasting time -

0:13:10 > 0:13:12the shelter is due to open in just 30 minutes.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15No, we haven't just done two, have we?

0:13:15 > 0:13:19Oh, God, it's not a good start this morning. We're so late.

0:13:19 > 0:13:20It's going to be a long week.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23I don't even think I'll last that long.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26The next job won't help Amy's mood.

0:13:26 > 0:13:32190 dogs need a lot of food and it doesn't smell so good.

0:13:32 > 0:13:33See when you fart under the cover

0:13:33 > 0:13:35and you don't want to lift the cover?

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Yeah, ten times worse than that.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42And the smells just get worse.

0:13:42 > 0:13:47The home has to wash 500 urine and faeces soaked blankets every day.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50Oh, my God, the smell of piss is in my jumper.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54- How's it going?- All right, still. - OK, yeah.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59- As long as I'm not dealing with cats, I don't mind. - HE LAUGHS

0:13:59 > 0:14:01How about getting your dogs used to cats?

0:14:01 > 0:14:02I've tried and it doesn't work.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Imagine this - my dog walks off the lead everywhere I go.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- He could see a pigeon...- Why, why? - ..he won't go for it.- Why?

0:14:07 > 0:14:09- Cos it's a good dog, good dog.- Oh, no.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Two hours into their stay here

0:14:13 > 0:14:16and there's one thing Mishak and Amy really object to.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18- Sue.- Sue.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21Boy, she seems very bossy, doesn't she?

0:14:21 > 0:14:24"Hurry up, hurry," I'm like, "It's my first time here."

0:14:24 > 0:14:26- I know.- I don't know the procedure.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29Sue's going to get a smack in the face.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Amy looks like she's tired

0:14:33 > 0:14:35and a little bit overwhelmed by all of this,

0:14:35 > 0:14:38she's being outshone by our friend.

0:14:38 > 0:14:42Mishak is going to be a challenge to turn him around.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44He's got a really good work ethic that I can see so far

0:14:44 > 0:14:45and he genuinely loves his dogs,

0:14:45 > 0:14:51but he has really rigid ideas about what you can and can't teach dogs.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54And those ideas are about to be put to the test.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Sue's arranged for the Brits to work with Nicole Beasley,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01the home's dog behaviour expert and trainer.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03- I'm Mishak.- Hi, Mishak. - But you can call me Shaks for short.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06OK, good!

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Mishak and Amy must take these two unruly and abandoned puppies

0:15:09 > 0:15:12and in only a week turn them around.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15For Amy, there's Coco.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Wow, you're excitable. Extremely excitable.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20And Mishak's got King.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22My friend. Stop it. Oi, oi, oi, oi, oi.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24They may look cute, but they were abandoned

0:15:24 > 0:15:27- because of their disobedient behaviour.- Ay.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30At the moment, these dogs are unadoptable. They're out of control.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34All right, no biting. No. No.

0:15:34 > 0:15:38So there's a lot riding on what the Brits are do with these dogs.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Now, it's vital that we get lots of training in,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45in an attempt to make sure that if they're chosen in a week's time

0:15:45 > 0:15:46that they're in a home for good.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Without the training, these pups could well be

0:15:49 > 0:15:52being put to sleep in a few weeks' time

0:15:52 > 0:15:56if we can't turn their behaviours around and make them successful.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00No. Sh. No.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04And just like with Mylo at home, Amy's got no control.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06- Ah! Ow!- Has she got you?

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Ah, she got my finger, the whole thing.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14Oi, no. No.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17Ow, she caught me.

0:16:18 > 0:16:19No.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21It may be a painful learning curve.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26The first lesson from Nicole is basic dog control

0:16:26 > 0:16:29and should stop the dogs jumping up at people,

0:16:29 > 0:16:33something Amy knows only too well with Mylo back home.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35I'm going to get you to walk up to her, Amy.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39- Yeah?- And if she jumps on you, straightaway don't say no,

0:16:39 > 0:16:41don't give her any attention, just turn your back.

0:16:43 > 0:16:44Good.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49The moment she doesn't jump we'll mark it with "yes".

0:16:51 > 0:16:52Yes.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Oi, sit. Down, boy. What's wrong with you?

0:16:56 > 0:16:59Mishak's using his own method of training.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02I'm going to teach you how to teach him to sit

0:17:02 > 0:17:04- without pushing on his hips.- OK.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Just because you don't want to do that to a young developing big dog.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09Let's teach them to sit.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12Going to lure her head up, come on, puppy dog,

0:17:12 > 0:17:14so her backside goes down, sit, yes.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17Treat above your head and then you'll sit.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20This just makes sense.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Sit.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24- Yes.- Good... Yes.- Good.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28It's a good start by the Brits, but Sue and Nicole

0:17:28 > 0:17:30can see Amy is struggling to cope.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33If she didn't have somebody there pushing, she'd have said,

0:17:33 > 0:17:35"No, can't be done, too hard."

0:17:35 > 0:17:37It's almost like she wants to be here, but she doesn't.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40I don't think she realises the seriousness of...

0:17:40 > 0:17:45it's not a game, because you can't give up on the dogs.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47If Amy's not here to get the maximum amount

0:17:47 > 0:17:49out of the week here, then it's...

0:17:49 > 0:17:52Especially, you know, where she's with someone like Mishak,

0:17:52 > 0:17:54who's embracing every single moment,

0:17:54 > 0:17:56and we're hoping that that would rub off.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58He's one of the best students I've ever had.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02He has even started off saying "Oh, I might incorporate

0:18:02 > 0:18:05"your training method into my training method," which was cute.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14Despite the workload, Mishak is starting to enjoy his time here

0:18:14 > 0:18:17and there seems to be one reason in particular.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20King's a G, yeah? That dog -

0:18:20 > 0:18:23he was a madman when he came out of his pen,

0:18:23 > 0:18:27half an hour time with someone, he calmed right down.

0:18:27 > 0:18:31Yeah, like, if this was the UK, I'd take him home myself.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37The Brits will be staying at the home to be on hand for work,

0:18:37 > 0:18:41and as they bed down for the night, it's all getting too much for Amy.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Yeah, I'm missing home.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47It's just... I don't want to be sleeping here at all.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Why should I? What have I done wrong? Why do I have to sleep here?

0:18:56 > 0:18:58All right, stress-head?

0:18:58 > 0:19:00You all right?

0:19:03 > 0:19:08Well, I'm on the next mattress if you want to talk.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24It's 8am and Amy's mood hasn't improved overnight.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27I don't work eight, nine hours,

0:19:27 > 0:19:31so, it's just, like, a shock to the system.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35I actually do feel like I'm being punished for something

0:19:35 > 0:19:37and I don't know what it is.

0:19:39 > 0:19:40I hate it.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44- Good to go and start?- Yeah. - Let's go, all right.

0:19:44 > 0:19:45Back down to the alley, right?

0:19:49 > 0:19:52I think she's still finding it really tough.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56She needs to, sort of, have her hand held more than Mishak, so...

0:19:56 > 0:20:00I think she's maybe lacking in a bit of confidence.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02I don't know that she's ready to chuck the towel in,

0:20:02 > 0:20:06but you know she's needing to, sort of, be guided quite a lot.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10How am I feeling doing poo duty? Shit, funnily enough.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15During her stay at the shelter, Amy and Sue take time out

0:20:15 > 0:20:18to look at what exactly brought her here. They're going to watch footage

0:20:18 > 0:20:21of her at home with Mylo.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25- Hey.- Hello. How are you?- I'm good.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29- I'm dying to find out about you. And why you're here.- Really?

0:20:29 > 0:20:30Yes!

0:20:30 > 0:20:34We haven't had a lot of one-on-one time either, so we're just like...

0:20:34 > 0:20:38Don't you think, like, from meeting me, you know why I'm here?

0:20:38 > 0:20:40- No.- No.- No?

0:20:40 > 0:20:44- No.- You're so hard to read.- Really? - Yeah.- Yeah.- OK.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Hmm, this is going to be interesting.

0:20:52 > 0:20:53'Mylo. Mylo.'

0:20:54 > 0:20:56- So this is a walk?- That's a road.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00Mylo! Mylo, wait. Mylo.

0:21:01 > 0:21:06The first problem Sue can see is how little control Amy has over Mylo.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08So, no lead? Oh, there's your lead -

0:21:08 > 0:21:11you're wearing the lead, what's going on there?

0:21:11 > 0:21:13Cos I'm out in the middle of nowhere

0:21:13 > 0:21:16and he should learn that he's got to stop at the road,

0:21:16 > 0:21:20I shouldn't have to have him on a lead for him to understand that.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22Wow, you're lucky you've still got him even now, aren't you?

0:21:22 > 0:21:26The dog's going to get out on the road and kill itself.

0:21:31 > 0:21:36I shudder, when I see him dashing out like that on a road.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39Mm, we don't really have him near main roads, I avoid them on purpose.

0:21:39 > 0:21:44- Yeah. Let me tell you that it only takes one road. - You've neglected his training.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46Sue's worried that Mylo won't get fixed

0:21:46 > 0:21:49because of the second big problem she can see with Amy.

0:21:51 > 0:21:56My concern is to turn those behaviours around is a big job,

0:21:56 > 0:21:58and I think that you're the sort of person that,

0:21:58 > 0:22:00as soon as the wheels fall off and it gets a bit difficult,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03"Nah, it's going to be too hard, it's going to be too hard

0:22:03 > 0:22:05"to make sure that he's on that lead."

0:22:05 > 0:22:08And there's a reason Amy finds it so hard to discipline her dog,

0:22:08 > 0:22:12it goes back to when she lost her childhood dog, Suzie.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16They loved each other so much, so that's why it was nice

0:22:16 > 0:22:19she was with her when she was actually put to sleep finally.

0:22:19 > 0:22:24And the day that she passed away was probably the worst day of my life.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27Yeah, it was horrible. Ooh.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29- Your family dog was put to sleep? - Yeah.

0:22:29 > 0:22:33- Yeah, and that's obviously a dog you grew up with, was it?- Yeah.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37- That would have been really hard. - Yeah.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42It wasn't nice, she was like yelping

0:22:42 > 0:22:45and then all her body was twitching and stuff.

0:22:45 > 0:22:46OK.

0:22:46 > 0:22:51Mylo's training is the way to make him have a happy life.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55I see it as you can sit there and wallow in sadness

0:22:55 > 0:22:57or you can actually pick up and go,

0:22:57 > 0:23:00"Come on, let's get a plan together for Mylo."

0:23:00 > 0:23:05I don't think it's a great time to talk about it.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07- No, about Mylo?- Yeah.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Why?

0:23:09 > 0:23:12- Cos it's just too much today. - Oh, goodness.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16You're a grown woman, you can do it.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20We can either make a plan or you can...

0:23:22 > 0:23:24..give up.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28Yep.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30And it seems Amy's made her choice.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33Right, I've had such a shit day today,

0:23:33 > 0:23:37I just feel like I can't be bothered any more.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39We need to make a plan.

0:23:39 > 0:23:40She's got to buy into it 100%.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42I don't know that she's going to do that.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46Even if it is me saying, "Right, I've failed..."

0:23:47 > 0:23:48..I kinda want to get out of here.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Mishak's having a better day.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55Yo.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00He's cleaning in the stray area where newly abandoned dogs are kept.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04Oh, you're a big fatty, innit?

0:24:04 > 0:24:06Overweight, no-one's looking after you.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10That's a red-nosed pit bull, that one.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13What's wrong with you?

0:24:13 > 0:24:16You're pretty, what are you crying for?

0:24:16 > 0:24:18It's starting to make him wonder

0:24:18 > 0:24:20just where all these dogs are coming from.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23They shouldn't be here, you know what I mean?

0:24:23 > 0:24:25Like, how can people not know that their dog's missing?

0:24:25 > 0:24:27They do know. Some of those people in there...

0:24:27 > 0:24:30- They just can't be bothered? - Yeah, they can't be bothered

0:24:30 > 0:24:32or they're causing them headaches,

0:24:32 > 0:24:35- they're causing headaches in the neighbourhood.- Yeah.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37Or they've tried to bite them.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39- They're going to get put down, aren't they?- Yeah.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48And you might not want to hear this,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51but part of the problem is the people who bred them.

0:24:51 > 0:24:52At home, Mishak is responsible

0:24:52 > 0:24:56for putting more than 50 puppies on the streets.

0:24:56 > 0:24:57It's easy to get business

0:24:57 > 0:25:01when you're walking with the pups, you know? You got Facebook?

0:25:01 > 0:25:03- Yeah.- Add me on Facebook.

0:25:06 > 0:25:07And you'd hate to think of one of your dogs

0:25:07 > 0:25:10going through this, wouldn't you?

0:25:13 > 0:25:17- I'd better get me out of here.- Go. Go.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Going to have a break?

0:25:26 > 0:25:29As a breeder, this is the sort of stuff you've got to think about.

0:25:29 > 0:25:30I know, I know, I know.

0:25:32 > 0:25:36As upset as Mishak feels, he's not seeing the breeding as the problem.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39It makes me angry. Owners, you get me?

0:25:40 > 0:25:43Can't handle them or they're getting them for the wrong reason

0:25:43 > 0:25:45and they're ending up here

0:25:45 > 0:25:47and then when they can't be re-homed,

0:25:47 > 0:25:50dog has to get killed, d'you get me?

0:25:50 > 0:25:53Another one coming in now.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59- Are there more dogs in there?- Yes. - How many?- Six.

0:25:59 > 0:26:00They just keep coming.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Amy's still feeling defeated,

0:26:03 > 0:26:06but Nicole's not going to let her give up on Mylo.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09- Come on, cheeky, hello.- Hi.

0:26:09 > 0:26:12After seeing the DVD, Nicole wants to make a training plan

0:26:12 > 0:26:14for Amy to take home for her dog.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16I saw a lot of barking.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Yeah, when someone arrives he does that, yeah.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20OK, the danger I see is that

0:26:20 > 0:26:24- he'll take it to the next step one day and bite someone.- Mm.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27When he barks, you're going to stay nice and relaxed and say,

0:26:27 > 0:26:31"It's OK," cos you're not worried. He's not likely to stop initially.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34You're just going to walk over, grab him by the collar,

0:26:34 > 0:26:36- march him away from what he's barking at.- Yeah.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39And you have to keep doing it until Mylo works out

0:26:39 > 0:26:42that when you say things are OK, it's OK.

0:26:42 > 0:26:47You're dealing with the situation, you need to figure out

0:26:47 > 0:26:49what the alternative to what you don't like is.

0:26:49 > 0:26:51Let's reward that.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53Sit, sit.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57Both Mishak and Amy will need to be firing on all cylinders -

0:26:57 > 0:26:58adoption day is looming.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00- Good boy.- Good boy.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03Of the 10,000 dogs a year that come into the home,

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Sue's team re-home 50 a week but dogs need serious training

0:27:05 > 0:27:08if they're not going to end up on the street again.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Good boy.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14Mishak is worried about what will happen if King is not adopted.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16He's starting to fall in love with him.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20He's cris, innit, King?

0:27:20 > 0:27:22He needs to be with people.

0:27:22 > 0:27:24Mishak is being a superstar.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26- I'm so proud of him.- Good boy.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29I wish I could grab his brain, though,

0:27:29 > 0:27:32and just put some wisdom in there so he could see

0:27:32 > 0:27:35the problem that he's creating with over-breeding these animals.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Good girl.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40But Amy's soft touch is getting in the way of Coco's progress.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44- No.- Amy's first tendency is just to give up on her dog.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46I worry about her own dog.

0:27:46 > 0:27:48I think if she hasn't got someone riding her the whole time

0:27:48 > 0:27:50that she's just going to give up with any dog.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53With an animal, you can't just give up.

0:27:58 > 0:28:03It has been an emotional day for Mishak and it's getting to him.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07Today when I shed two tears for them dogs, there, you get me?

0:28:07 > 0:28:09I was sitting there like, "Raargh."

0:28:10 > 0:28:14It's like dogs is the only thing man will shed a tear for still,

0:28:14 > 0:28:17cos everything else I bottle up inside, you get me?

0:28:17 > 0:28:21Never really been happy, searching for happiness but man don't find it.

0:28:21 > 0:28:25From when I lost my mum, that's my happiness out the window.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29Like, a lot of people don't realise what it is to lose a parent, you get me?

0:28:29 > 0:28:31She was my best friend as well, that's the thing,

0:28:31 > 0:28:33she was my actual best friend, you get me?

0:28:34 > 0:28:38Mishak's mum suffered from depression before she died,

0:28:38 > 0:28:41Mishak was just nine years old.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43She just started flipping on me.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46I had to get my dad, called him, he came home.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49She died, you get me? Like, killed herself.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54You'll never find another mother's love, innit? Never.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57I don't know, I just miss her still.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01But I don't know how to frustrate it, I don't know what to do, like.

0:29:09 > 0:29:10It's 8am.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15Sue is keen for Amy to meet shelter manager, Jodie.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19After seeing Amy's DVD, Sue wants to help her approach

0:29:19 > 0:29:21the emotional barriers holding her back.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25Jodie's counselled the staff at the home for the last ten years

0:29:25 > 0:29:27and she's going to help Amy confront the issues

0:29:27 > 0:29:30around the death of her childhood dog, Suzie.

0:29:30 > 0:29:35I'm going to show you a dog today that is a little confronting.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37Now, we need to be quick.

0:29:37 > 0:29:40So tell me what you're thinking when you first see this little guy.

0:29:40 > 0:29:44She's obviously had a really bad... Is that a flea problem?

0:29:44 > 0:29:48Mm-hm. He's got some neurological concerns,

0:29:48 > 0:29:50he's quite disorientated.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52If he was my beloved pet at home,

0:29:52 > 0:29:56- I wouldn't let him continue his discomforting journey.- Yeah.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59Yeah? I think we need to respect that for him.

0:29:59 > 0:30:03- He's really old.- Yes.- He's been with us for the duration of time

0:30:03 > 0:30:06giving his owners the opportunity to claim him and no-one's come forward.

0:30:06 > 0:30:09- Right.- But today is his day that we feel we need to take

0:30:09 > 0:30:12- some responsibility and some action for him.- Mm.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15So we need to put him to sleep today.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20- OK.- And I would really like you to be there for him.

0:30:20 > 0:30:22No. I can't.

0:30:24 > 0:30:25Tell me a bit about it.

0:30:25 > 0:30:29It is completely natural and normal to get upset.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31SOBBING: I just couldn't do it.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36We need to look at him, we can't take this from our own perspective,

0:30:36 > 0:30:40we can't be selfish about this, I think someone else already has been.

0:30:40 > 0:30:42His owners have left him here.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45I just don't know if I can do it.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48What makes you think you can't?

0:30:48 > 0:30:54- Just...memories of when I had to get my dog put down.- Yep.

0:30:54 > 0:30:57But I think what we really need to think about

0:30:57 > 0:30:59is this big picture stuff.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02We need to take our selfishness out of that a little bit

0:31:02 > 0:31:03and I personally need to know

0:31:03 > 0:31:06that I do the right thing by these guys here.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10Oh, I don't know if I can do it!

0:31:10 > 0:31:12SHE WEEPS

0:31:16 > 0:31:19And I think what's really important for him

0:31:19 > 0:31:24- is that we stop this pain and stop this distress.- Yes.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27And we will try and make it as comforting as we can for him

0:31:27 > 0:31:29and that's why I think we need to be there.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31We need to hold him, we need to make sure

0:31:31 > 0:31:32that someone's with him for this,

0:31:32 > 0:31:36someone's been with him for however long and now he's on his own.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40- OK.- This is about...- OK, let's do it.

0:31:40 > 0:31:42All right. Now do you want to carry him?

0:31:43 > 0:31:45We take that very seriously.

0:31:45 > 0:31:50Every little animal that we have to put to sleep is a decision that's...

0:31:55 > 0:31:58..doesn't come easy, but sadly it's something that we have to do here

0:31:58 > 0:32:01seven days a week and it's not something that animal lovers

0:32:01 > 0:32:05like doing anywhere, any time, it's just a responsibility that we have.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10Knowing that his heart condition is untreatable,

0:32:10 > 0:32:13Amy's decided to be there for his final journey.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16And what's going to make me sleep tonight

0:32:16 > 0:32:19is to know that he's not suffering any more.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26After a final examination, vet Alan reassures Amy

0:32:26 > 0:32:29that sadly nothing more can be done for this very old dog,

0:32:29 > 0:32:33and the kindest thing is to end his suffering.

0:32:35 > 0:32:39They go to sleep really quickly, as if they were having a surgery.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43- Good lad. Good lad.- Good boy.

0:32:43 > 0:32:47And we just support him so that he goes down, don't let him fall.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54And I'll just have a listen, just to make sure.

0:33:04 > 0:33:08- Really peaceful. He's not aware of it at all.- Yeah.

0:33:08 > 0:33:09He didn't feel it, right?

0:33:15 > 0:33:17SHE SOBS LOUDLY

0:33:30 > 0:33:33The staff here have to learn to face their emotions

0:33:33 > 0:33:35and it's something Amy could learn from.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38You're going to probably have some highs and lows today,

0:33:38 > 0:33:39it's not going to go away in your mind,

0:33:39 > 0:33:42you're going to think about it for a while, yeah?

0:33:42 > 0:33:44And that's completely normal, that's completely normal

0:33:44 > 0:33:46to go into the toilet and have a cry for five minutes.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49But it's important that you don't shut it away

0:33:49 > 0:33:52and I think that's what might have happened with your dog.

0:33:52 > 0:33:55I think it was so confronting and so emotionally upsetting for you

0:33:55 > 0:33:57and you've shut that door.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59I don't think you've dealt with a lot of it.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04Get down. Oi, Coco.

0:34:04 > 0:34:08Mishak's going through a different kind of torment.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11No. No.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13Oh. Stop it!

0:34:13 > 0:34:16I'm not doing nothing but cleaning shit, you get me?

0:34:16 > 0:34:19Which I think takes the fucking piss.

0:34:22 > 0:34:26But not even working with King has improved his mood.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28Now I'm really starting to get pissed off.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34DOG BARKS

0:34:34 > 0:34:36Shut up.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38Sue's trying to get to the bottom of it.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41- Hey.- Yeah?- Knock, knock.

0:34:41 > 0:34:45- I'm just looking for... - What's going on? What's wrong?

0:34:45 > 0:34:47Nothing, nothing, I'm just...

0:34:47 > 0:34:50- Are you a bit over it all today?- Mm. - You want to talk to me about it?

0:34:50 > 0:34:53No, not really, I don't talk to people about nothing,

0:34:53 > 0:34:56that's how I am, I'm an enclosed person, I've always been like that.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00Oh, wow, that's not how you strike me.

0:35:00 > 0:35:01No, I'm an enclosed person, trust me.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06I don't know what's going on with him,

0:35:06 > 0:35:09I think he's had a hell of a ride so far this week.

0:35:09 > 0:35:13It's shaking some of his fundamental beliefs

0:35:13 > 0:35:19and so his foundations are shifting a lot underneath,

0:35:19 > 0:35:21so today it's really catching up with him, I think.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24I'm dying to see what is revealed in the DVD on him, yeah.

0:35:24 > 0:35:25Watching Mishak at home

0:35:25 > 0:35:28might make uncomfortable viewing for Sue and Jodie.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30- Come in.- Hello. How you doing?

0:35:30 > 0:35:35Are you all right? I apologise, but I did wake up real grumpy.

0:35:35 > 0:35:39- We all have our days. - Sorry, though, yeah?- That's OK.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41- Here we go. - Going to press the button.

0:35:43 > 0:35:47- You got Facebook?- Yeah. - Add me on Facebook.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50It's easy to get business when you're walking with the pups,

0:35:50 > 0:35:52d'you know what I'm saying?

0:35:53 > 0:35:56With the home putting to sleep up to 2,000 dogs a year,

0:35:56 > 0:35:59this is hard to swallow.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02Breeding? You know, you're walking down the street...?

0:36:02 > 0:36:05How do you walk down the street and bump into people

0:36:05 > 0:36:07- and go, "Oh, you can buy one?" - If I know you want, you get me?

0:36:07 > 0:36:09You don't know those people.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12I say take my number, if you want a puppy let me know,

0:36:12 > 0:36:14and then I'll come and find out more about you,

0:36:14 > 0:36:17know what I'm saying? Before I hand over a pup, I'll find out everything.

0:36:17 > 0:36:19There's enough dogs in the world,

0:36:19 > 0:36:22there's enough dogs in the world when, all your local shelters

0:36:22 > 0:36:25will be killing just as many dogs as we have to every day,

0:36:25 > 0:36:27so I very much respect the fact that you've got

0:36:27 > 0:36:29this wonderful relationship with your dog,

0:36:29 > 0:36:33but, to me, it should stop there, you and the dog, and that's it.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36We would much prefer you to be part of the solution than part of the problem.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43But there's a more urgent issue Jodie can see

0:36:43 > 0:36:44with Mishak's dog, Trouble.

0:36:46 > 0:36:51It scares me to know that he walks the streets and isn't on a lead.

0:36:51 > 0:36:54It scares me that we might talk to you in 12 months' time

0:36:54 > 0:36:58and he is impounded or he's been hit by a car, or he's bitten someone.

0:36:58 > 0:37:02If he was going to go, he would have gone. But that's why, you see

0:37:02 > 0:37:04when he saw the pushchair, he ignored it, kept going.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07But that lady was... She thought her baby was going to be...

0:37:07 > 0:37:09Yeah, that's cool, he sniffs it and keeps moving,

0:37:09 > 0:37:11he'll never jump up, he's never jumped up,

0:37:11 > 0:37:13Trouble's been by my side cos he knows.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16That is so risky. That is so risky.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19What if there was an incident? What if it's a cat?

0:37:19 > 0:37:22There's a cat - bang. Is it worth the risk?

0:37:22 > 0:37:24Would you risk his life?

0:37:24 > 0:37:26I wouldn't risk his life, but put it this way -

0:37:26 > 0:37:28when I'm out with my dog, I know.

0:37:28 > 0:37:30You think you've got everything under control,

0:37:30 > 0:37:34but you can't control everything in your world,

0:37:34 > 0:37:35there's going to be a time that,

0:37:35 > 0:37:40I mean, simply that you cannot control, and then he's gone.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43But how do you know there's going to be a time?

0:37:43 > 0:37:46Well, you just run the risk of that all the time and we see...

0:37:46 > 0:37:47There's a chance, there's a chance.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50We see people like you who think, "It's not going to happen to me,"

0:37:50 > 0:37:54and they... I have to sit with them when their dog's dead.

0:37:54 > 0:37:58What I do with my dog, Trouble, will never change,

0:37:58 > 0:38:00that's what I'm saying.

0:38:02 > 0:38:03With nothing getting through,

0:38:03 > 0:38:08the only option is to show Mishak some hard truths.

0:38:08 > 0:38:11I don't want to talk through it, you listen to me, OK?

0:38:11 > 0:38:14Cos you talk a lot and we listen to you a lot, now can you listen to me?

0:38:14 > 0:38:17- Yeah, that's fine.- Couple of things I need to show you.- Yeah.- OK.

0:38:18 > 0:38:22I'm showing you this because it's important to me

0:38:22 > 0:38:24that you see this, all right? Just wait there.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33Hit by a car. Not on a lead, OK?

0:38:36 > 0:38:39Hit by a car, not on a lead.

0:38:40 > 0:38:43Hit by a car, not on a lead.

0:38:43 > 0:38:44Oh...

0:38:48 > 0:38:50No way.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52Can you get the message?

0:38:52 > 0:38:54- Mm.- Not on a lead.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57Yeah?

0:38:57 > 0:39:01The shelter receives about 15 dogs a month that are hit by cars.

0:39:01 > 0:39:04Most do not survive and are stored temporarily here.

0:39:04 > 0:39:09I honestly... I'm probably, yeah, like the rest of these owners.

0:39:09 > 0:39:11Like, I don't think my dog will run out,

0:39:11 > 0:39:16you know what I'm saying? Because of his nature.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19Like, I wouldn't advise someone else to walk their dog off the lead,

0:39:19 > 0:39:21- d'you know what I'm saying? - You've got to do it yourself, too.

0:39:23 > 0:39:27- Mm.- Sue doesn't seem to be getting through.

0:39:29 > 0:39:31So she's got one last thing

0:39:31 > 0:39:34to convince him about the tragic consequences of breeding.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38Now, stay focused, OK? You stay with me.

0:39:38 > 0:39:43This is home to some of the most dangerous dogs in Australia.

0:39:43 > 0:39:44Stay with me.

0:39:44 > 0:39:47AGGRESSIVE BARKING

0:39:47 > 0:39:51This is a purpose-built maximum security area.

0:39:52 > 0:39:56- DOG BARKS LOUDLY - Jesus.

0:39:56 > 0:39:59- He scare you? Did he scare you? - It's... It's a bit of a daunting...

0:39:59 > 0:40:04His owner, his owner is crying that he's in here

0:40:04 > 0:40:06and he says it won't hurt a fly.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09Is that going to be the next dog that's walking down the street

0:40:09 > 0:40:11off a lead, cos his owner thinks he's fine?

0:40:11 > 0:40:14These dogs are here because they have done something

0:40:14 > 0:40:17that's a danger to the community.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21They have attacked and/or killed other animals.

0:40:21 > 0:40:22They have bitten people.

0:40:22 > 0:40:27One of them, its owner is going to court on the charge of murder.

0:40:29 > 0:40:30Human?

0:40:30 > 0:40:33You think you've got it under control?

0:40:33 > 0:40:35So did each and every one of these owners,

0:40:35 > 0:40:38and you're churning them out and that's why I get upset

0:40:38 > 0:40:40because you're part of the problem, as I see it,

0:40:40 > 0:40:41not part of the solution.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47I don't understand how people can do that, you get me?

0:40:47 > 0:40:50Like, not with their dogs, that's disgusting.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52You know what I'd rather hear you say?

0:40:52 > 0:40:55"I'm not going to breed any more." And I know you're not going to go there.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58- I know, I wish I could but... - Well, but... Consider it.

0:40:58 > 0:40:59I... That will stay in the back of my mind,

0:40:59 > 0:41:01don't get it twisted, like,

0:41:01 > 0:41:04it makes me even wonder even more now, yo, who am I going to give...

0:41:04 > 0:41:07You know what I'm saying? I'm going to put even more of a look

0:41:07 > 0:41:10on who and where and how often I'm checking on them, you get me?

0:41:10 > 0:41:13Like, if it means I have to check on them every week now

0:41:13 > 0:41:15I will do so, if it means I have to give...

0:41:15 > 0:41:20Sue's thrown everything at Mishak, but even though he's upset,

0:41:20 > 0:41:23it's clear he's still trying to justify his breeding.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25They have to go over that before they get the pup then, yeah.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27But other than that, I don't want to deal with it.

0:41:27 > 0:41:30I can't listen to you talking about breeding pups any more,

0:41:30 > 0:41:34- because I can't, OK?- That hurts you, I can see it in your face.- It does!

0:41:34 > 0:41:37- I can see it in your face, I can see it.- Cos that's going to upset me.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41I know, no worries. I can see it's upsetting you. I can see it.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44- Argh, you frustrate me. - All right.

0:41:44 > 0:41:47God, get it through your head.

0:41:47 > 0:41:51- OK, I'm going to have to go and sit down.- Yeah, I can feel that, I can see that.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54- Yeah, I'm going to have a break. - Yeah?

0:41:54 > 0:41:56I hope he gets something out of that

0:41:56 > 0:41:59because it's a big part of what we do here.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04I was... I just needed him to see all of that.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08I can see she wanted to cry, you get me?

0:42:08 > 0:42:11She was upset. Makes me realise she's got a good heart, you get me?

0:42:11 > 0:42:14She's trying to make a difference to my life, you get me?

0:42:14 > 0:42:17At home, it makes me see that there's a lot more

0:42:17 > 0:42:21that I don't see on the road, a lot of dogs that are just there, impounded.

0:42:21 > 0:42:23Yeah, I feel sorry for the shit she has to deal with, you get me?

0:42:23 > 0:42:25Cos it's dread.

0:42:28 > 0:42:29Amy's back training.

0:42:29 > 0:42:32Nicole wants to show her that persistence can really pay.

0:42:32 > 0:42:36We'll work it out, Mr Wally. He's crazy, yeah!

0:42:36 > 0:42:39She's going to have Amy train the most disobedient dog in the home.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46If Amy can succeed with Wally without giving up...

0:42:46 > 0:42:47Good.

0:42:47 > 0:42:49..she can train any dog.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53Let's go.

0:42:53 > 0:42:56You look like you've given up on him already.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01And right on cue...

0:43:01 > 0:43:03To be honest, I don't even want to try.

0:43:03 > 0:43:06At home with Mylo, she has exactly the same attitude.

0:43:06 > 0:43:09Come here, Mylo, here. Give it up.

0:43:09 > 0:43:11She's failed there, too.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13Mylo. Oi.

0:43:15 > 0:43:19But Nicole's not going to let Amy quit this time.

0:43:19 > 0:43:21You're going to walk forward, every time he pulls

0:45:59 > 0:46:02This is so important that she gets it right,

0:46:02 > 0:46:04because if we adopt her out and she's biting,

0:46:04 > 0:46:06she's probably going to come back Sunday morning.

0:46:06 > 0:46:08Sit, good.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12And Mishak's going to be teaching.

0:46:12 > 0:46:16I'm a bit nervous, but I should do it.

0:46:23 > 0:46:25- Hello.- Hello.

0:46:25 > 0:46:29Sue and Nicole want Mishak to see he has a talent with dogs

0:46:43 > 0:46:46OK. Right.

0:46:46 > 0:46:50So, we're treating... We're teaching, now,

0:46:50 > 0:46:53good human polite greeting... Polite human greeting, sorry.

0:46:56 > 0:47:00He's nervous but he's going to get it by the end of the class.

0:47:00 > 0:47:02I think we'll see the real Shaks come out of himself.

0:47:02 > 0:47:04Walk round to each dog

0:47:04 > 0:47:07and if the dog jumps, walk away, just walk away.

0:47:07 > 0:47:12If it doesn't jump and it sits looking, treat.

0:47:12 > 0:47:14But once Mishak settles his nerves...

0:47:14 > 0:47:16Good girl.

0:47:16 > 0:47:17..he's off and flying.

0:47:17 > 0:47:20- Right, here we go. - Yeah, that's exactly it.

0:47:21 > 0:47:24Hand here. She's concentrating on you.

0:47:24 > 0:47:27Make sure you're the first one out of the door.

0:47:27 > 0:47:30It goes where you go, you don't go where it goes.

0:47:30 > 0:47:33It's not as bad as I thought, you know what I'm saying?

0:47:33 > 0:47:36- HE LAUGHS - Excellent! Come on.

0:47:36 > 0:47:39Things are going well, the students are asking Mishak questions

0:47:39 > 0:47:42and for the first time he is giving the correct advice -

0:47:42 > 0:47:45not his own brand of doggy behaviour.

0:47:46 > 0:47:49Yo, this feels good, an accomplishment,

0:47:49 > 0:47:52a proper accomplishment. Good girl.

0:47:52 > 0:47:55Sue's feeling it, too.

0:47:55 > 0:47:58Part of what we do here at the home is rehabilitate

0:47:58 > 0:47:59and I guess we're looking at Mishak

0:47:59 > 0:48:01as somebody who can be rehabilitated.

0:48:01 > 0:48:06He's been a challenge to work with, but at the same time a delight

0:48:06 > 0:48:09and his dogs are going to benefit from it, so it's great.

0:48:09 > 0:48:12Trust me, it made me feel good about myself, man.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14- Thank you, thank you.- Thank you. - If it wasn't for you...

0:48:14 > 0:48:17- Ah, well, thank you. - ..I wouldn't be doing this.

0:48:17 > 0:48:19This looks like it could be a career choice for me.

0:48:19 > 0:48:22That has made my...year.

0:48:29 > 0:48:32This is the moment they've been training for this week.

0:48:32 > 0:48:35New owners arrive to look round.

0:48:35 > 0:48:37King!

0:48:37 > 0:48:41In a few hours, Mishak and Amy will be leaving for the UK,

0:48:41 > 0:48:43so they need to find homes for the dogs.

0:48:43 > 0:48:46- Ay.- So is that for sale yet?

0:48:46 > 0:48:49Yeah, I'm just putting him through rehab now, and he's ready anyway.

0:48:49 > 0:48:52And it isn't long before there's interest in Coco.

0:48:52 > 0:48:53Good girl.

0:48:55 > 0:48:58Hi, so this is Coco.

0:48:59 > 0:49:03- Why did you show an interest for her? - Oh, I just love Labradors.

0:49:03 > 0:49:06Amy's taking her role as Coco's guardian seriously.

0:49:06 > 0:49:09Obviously, she's going to need a lot of training

0:49:09 > 0:49:12because I've put in a lot of hard work this week

0:49:12 > 0:49:15so if she goes to a home where someone isn't willing to do that

0:49:15 > 0:49:17then she'll just go back to how she was,

0:49:17 > 0:49:20- so overall she's an amazing dog. Amazing.- That's good.

0:49:20 > 0:49:22Amy is amazing.

0:49:22 > 0:49:25What a transformation. She's confident,

0:49:25 > 0:49:27she's taking charge of that dog,

0:49:27 > 0:49:31she's sussing this bloke out to make sure he's listening.

0:49:31 > 0:49:34- Pick her up and then just get her by the collar.- Yep.

0:49:34 > 0:49:36- And wait till she's completely calm...- Oh, OK.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39- ..till you put her back on the floor.- Yep.- So...

0:49:39 > 0:49:41Just a few days ago I was telling her to grow up,

0:49:41 > 0:49:44to act like a grown woman.

0:49:44 > 0:49:48Well, she has. She really has. I'm almost in tears

0:49:48 > 0:49:52with how much I've seen Amy growing in just a few days.

0:49:52 > 0:49:55I'm glad that she's going to be going to a lovely home. There you go.

0:49:55 > 0:49:58And training Coco has opened Amy's eyes to a new way of thinking.

0:49:58 > 0:50:01If I ever get another dog,

0:50:01 > 0:50:04I'd definitely go to a rescue home now.

0:50:04 > 0:50:06It just makes such a difference

0:50:06 > 0:50:09and you feel that I've given this dog a new life

0:50:09 > 0:50:12which is what every dog deserves, really.

0:50:13 > 0:50:18Today's been a success, with 40 dogs adopted out to new homes.

0:50:18 > 0:50:23But as the gates shut, there's a dog that's been left behind.

0:50:25 > 0:50:27Nobody wanted to adopt King

0:50:27 > 0:50:30and now Mishak will have to say goodbye to his buddy.

0:50:30 > 0:50:34It's like permanently saying goodbye to a family, you know?

0:50:38 > 0:50:41You don't want to do it. I don't want to do it...

0:50:44 > 0:50:45..but I have to.

0:50:54 > 0:50:56I'm going to miss you, mate. Are you going to miss me, hmm?

0:50:59 > 0:51:01Promise. I'll come.

0:51:18 > 0:51:20I'm not going to see King again.

0:51:21 > 0:51:23I feel like he's one of my own

0:51:23 > 0:51:25and I'm leaving him.

0:51:30 > 0:51:33It's more than just King that Mishak's leaving behind.

0:51:33 > 0:51:36- Hey?- Yeah.

0:51:36 > 0:51:38What's going on?

0:51:38 > 0:51:39King, man.

0:51:41 > 0:51:44- Ah, I'm going to miss you. - I'm going to miss you, too.

0:51:44 > 0:51:46You're a challenge. You're... You're a challenge.

0:51:46 > 0:51:51You've done my head in this week. Hey?

0:51:51 > 0:51:54- Thank you. - You've taught me a lot, too.

0:51:54 > 0:52:00You taught me invaluable lessons, man, thank you.

0:52:06 > 0:52:09You're like the mummy I've not... I never had.

0:52:18 > 0:52:23In Berkshire, Amy's finally shown Mylo who's in charge.

0:52:23 > 0:52:24Everyone's happier.

0:52:24 > 0:52:28Since I've been back he's so much better, it's just amazing.

0:52:28 > 0:52:30Wait.

0:52:30 > 0:52:33'I think I've been more calm, so he seems to be more calmer.'

0:52:33 > 0:52:35That's better. That's all right.

0:52:35 > 0:52:38And Amy's taken on board Nicole's training techniques

0:52:38 > 0:52:40and can now walk Mylo safely.

0:52:40 > 0:52:42Nicely, that's a good boy.

0:52:42 > 0:52:44Go on then.

0:52:44 > 0:52:47There's no chasing Mylo around any more.

0:52:47 > 0:52:49Come on, Mylo. Come on. Good boy!

0:52:49 > 0:52:53Good boy, well done! Well done.

0:52:53 > 0:52:57He always comes back, a bit like a completely different dog,

0:52:57 > 0:52:59completely different Amy as well.

0:52:59 > 0:53:03And that Amy is grateful for her time at the Lost Dogs' Home.

0:53:03 > 0:53:06I just look at him and think, "Yeah, it was all worth it,"

0:53:06 > 0:53:10because I want him to have, like, a happy life so...

0:53:10 > 0:53:14But there's one more thing Amy needs to address.

0:53:14 > 0:53:19Going to my mum's for the first time in a long time.

0:53:19 > 0:53:22Of course I would like her to be proud of me

0:53:22 > 0:53:24cos, you know, everyone wants their parents

0:53:24 > 0:53:26to be proud of them, don't they?

0:53:28 > 0:53:30Much better, so far.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33I feel fine about him coming here, I'm sitting here, I'm relaxing.

0:53:33 > 0:53:37- I think you've done brilliantly. - I want you to be proud of me.

0:53:37 > 0:53:39I'm very proud of you,

0:53:39 > 0:53:41to have gone all the way to Australia I admired you for that,

0:53:41 > 0:53:44never mind everything else that went on when you were there.

0:53:44 > 0:53:49Yeah. Obviously before I went to Australia, I'd be like,

0:53:49 > 0:53:51"Oh," straightaway every time I thought about Suzie,

0:53:51 > 0:53:54but now, like, when I think about it,

0:53:54 > 0:53:57like, I'm so proud that I did that for that dog.

0:53:57 > 0:54:02From my point of view I have to say to you that...

0:54:02 > 0:54:04Aw, I'm going to get upset now, sorry.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07- SHE SNIFFS - I don't know what I would have done without you that day,

0:54:07 > 0:54:10- I'll never forget that. - I know.- It's fantastic.

0:54:13 > 0:54:16You're a good girl, you've done very well and I'm really proud of you.

0:54:16 > 0:54:18Thank you.

0:54:18 > 0:54:20Come on, come here.

0:54:24 > 0:54:26In Wembley, it seems like some of Sue's words

0:54:26 > 0:54:28have sunk in with Mishak.

0:54:28 > 0:54:32Sue was always telling man that, "Yo, put your dog on a lead,

0:54:32 > 0:54:35"it's going to get hit by something,"

0:54:35 > 0:54:38or, it's out of respect that I walk him on the lead,

0:54:38 > 0:54:41respect for Sue and Nicole, innit?

0:54:41 > 0:54:45And that respect didn't come easy to Mishak.

0:54:45 > 0:54:48Sue, in the beginning, I couldn't even handle her, innit?

0:54:48 > 0:54:51I ain't had a woman in my life to be bossing me around

0:54:51 > 0:54:55and tell me off and tell me where I'm going wrong, innit?

0:54:55 > 0:54:58Changed my life, like, them two women there,

0:54:58 > 0:55:00they changed my perspective on certain things.

0:55:00 > 0:55:02And that includes breeding.

0:55:02 > 0:55:04Like, he hasn't bred anyway. Since I got back,

0:55:04 > 0:55:07he hasn't bred, like, and I'm keeping it like that for a while.

0:55:07 > 0:55:09- You all right?- How are you?

0:55:09 > 0:55:13And this will be good news for local dog warden, Angela Moruzzi.

0:55:13 > 0:55:16- Hi. So, how was your trip? - It was good, you know?

0:55:16 > 0:55:18I actually learned about, like, you see like your day-to-day...

0:55:18 > 0:55:23- Job.- I was going to ask you, yeah? - Yeah?- If I bring my pups down, yeah?

0:55:23 > 0:55:25- Right.- Can I get 'em chipped?

0:55:25 > 0:55:28- Yeah, we'll microchip the dogs for you.- Thank you.

0:55:28 > 0:55:31And there's a surprise for Mishak.

0:55:31 > 0:55:33In a bid to keep him on the right path,

0:55:33 > 0:55:35Sue's sent him dog training books.

0:55:35 > 0:55:38Yeah, Sue's a G.

0:55:40 > 0:55:43Oh, she knows I don't like cats.

0:55:43 > 0:55:45"Dear Mishak, how are you going?

0:55:45 > 0:55:47"You've been in my thoughts and I hope you've recovered

0:55:47 > 0:55:50"from your stay with us. You're a remarkable young man

0:55:50 > 0:55:52"and I feel you will succeed in anything that you work for.

0:55:52 > 0:55:55"Your energy and love for dogs are a credit to you.

0:55:55 > 0:55:58"Remember - the right attitude's very important.

0:55:58 > 0:56:02"Lots of love, Shaks, Sue." Yeah...

0:56:03 > 0:56:06Yeah. I'm going to be all right.

0:56:07 > 0:56:09I'm going to definitely be all right.

0:56:09 > 0:56:11Give me cuddles, come on.

0:56:14 > 0:56:17And two weeks later, King found a happy new home, too.

0:56:20 > 0:56:23Next time, two clueless British dog owners...

0:56:23 > 0:56:25No.

0:56:25 > 0:56:28..are in Canada, working with special ops.

0:56:29 > 0:56:32- Knock it off.- Hang on.

0:56:32 > 0:56:34Can they train these dogs of war?

0:56:34 > 0:56:37Or will they crumble under fire?

0:56:37 > 0:56:39That was the scariest thing I've ever done in my life.
