:00:12. > :00:16.The course is set - the sheep are ready and the handlers and their
:00:16. > :00:20.dogs waiting. It can only mean one thing - welcome to One Man and His
:00:20. > :00:30.Dog 2012 and this year we're challenging ourselves, because
:00:30. > :00:46.
:00:46. > :00:51.Well hello and welcome to Penrice Castle, on the beautiful Gower
:00:51. > :00:57.peninsula. For the first time in its 36-year lis tri, One Man and
:00:57. > :01:01.His Dog comes to you live. Yes, you did hear that right. We are light
:01:01. > :01:06.and frankly anything could happen. But don't worry, all the normal
:01:06. > :01:12.rules apply. We still have our four competing nation of England,
:01:12. > :01:18.Ireland, Scotland and Wales and that he very challenging courses to
:01:18. > :01:24.challenge the handlers and dog. you're new to the sport, don't
:01:24. > :01:29.worry, we will explain Eigg. Our competitors have arrived, looking
:01:29. > :01:34.very calm. But I reckon there is a bit of tension in the air as the
:01:34. > :01:40.handlers and the dogs eye up the competition. Some have competed
:01:40. > :01:44.against each other before, because these guys are the best in the
:01:44. > :01:50.business. There is a lot of hand shaking going on, not sure how long
:01:50. > :01:55.that will continue. First thing today the young handlers were out
:01:55. > :02:05.and they didn't disappoint. You can see it all on the red button at the
:02:05. > :02:18.
:02:18. > :02:25.end of the programme. But here are That look like a beautiful lift.
:02:25. > :02:35.What a recovery. He has, he has turned them. Oh dear is the dog
:02:35. > :02:36.
:02:36. > :02:43.going in? This is some run, this really is. Well she was asking for
:02:43. > :02:50.that. They're very tricky sheep. Whoops! That is what you call line
:02:50. > :02:56.jumping, not line dancing. A possyibt here. Oh I like this, come
:02:56. > :03:03.in, turn on to the other two though, that is it. Oh the judges won't
:03:03. > :03:10.lake that. Come on girls, just spin round and help out. It is really
:03:10. > :03:17.tight point-wise. Surely that's got to be 10. What a pen that was, my
:03:17. > :03:22.word it went right down to the wire. It is literally one man and his dog.
:03:22. > :03:28.It was action packed and we did have a souper morning. You can see
:03:28. > :03:38.all that in full on the red button after this show. Here are the
:03:38. > :03:42.
:03:42. > :03:49.scores after this morning's young As always on One Man and His Dog
:03:49. > :03:57.the man with the inside knowledge, our expert Gus Dermody. It was a
:03:57. > :04:02.good morning. Yes. How do you think they did? Ireland started off and
:04:02. > :04:07.Sean McCorrigan put in a good run and I didn't think it could be
:04:07. > :04:11.beaten until the Scottish competitor came in. Ireland are in
:04:11. > :04:16.the lead, but everything to play for. It really is. It is still
:04:16. > :04:21.close. There is a long way to go. If you have a burning question
:04:21. > :04:27.about One Man and His Dog, we would love to hear from you. We will put
:04:27. > :04:37.Gus on the spot. The hardest questions put them in. Our e-mail
:04:37. > :04:46.
:04:46. > :04:55.Matt and Gus is is time you went to the box. I have three thing to say
:04:55. > :05:01.to you, - away, come by and lie down. Now we prepare for the next
:05:01. > :05:09.stage of the competition. First let me introduce you to our judges,
:05:09. > :05:15.they are Shirley co pep and Kenny Donald from Ayrshire. -- Shirley
:05:15. > :05:21.Cropper. We have raised them up so nothing can escape their expert
:05:21. > :05:26.eyes. On with the live action. Next brace round, that is one man with
:05:26. > :05:30.two dogs. We will give you all the detail once the competition gets
:05:30. > :05:36.under way. But here is the man the task of leading the way, finishing
:05:36. > :05:40.in fourth after the young handlers's round was Stephen
:05:40. > :05:50.Longton from England and so his second cousin is Michael Longton
:05:50. > :05:54.
:05:54. > :05:58.and he is first with his dogs, Todd and Don. I am running this year's
:05:58. > :06:02.brace competition. The Longtons have farmed here since my great
:06:02. > :06:07.grandfather and it's passed down the general raigs. Now I live here
:06:07. > :06:12.with my wife and two children and my parents. I'm the fifth
:06:12. > :06:18.generation of Longtons to run sheepdogs on trials. It is said
:06:18. > :06:22.that a Longton baby is born with a whistle in its mouth and doesn't
:06:22. > :06:27.need a dumby. I have my father to give me advice. Without him I don't
:06:28. > :06:35.think I would have done half as well as I have done in my trialling
:06:35. > :06:40.career. I hope my daughter, Eva, follows on in the family foot steps.
:06:40. > :06:45.Todd is a great dog. He is unflappable. He is good at trials
:06:45. > :06:50.and work. He is great to have around. Don's a little more
:06:50. > :06:55.unpredictable at times. But he is a great partner to Todd in work and
:06:55. > :06:59.they seem to complement each other. I have competed on One Man and His
:06:59. > :07:08.Dog before against Kevin and John from the Wesh team. I hope this
:07:08. > :07:14.time the rivalry will come out with England on top. Michael Longton
:07:14. > :07:20.walks out and making a bit of history, Gus, as the first handler
:07:20. > :07:29.on a live One Man and His Dog. His dogs Todd and Don. Todd with the
:07:29. > :07:36.blaze on his face and the, there he goes to the left. He has got Don,
:07:36. > :07:43.the darker heavier, with a bit of tan. He has gone very wide. Good to
:07:43. > :07:47.see he has gone on the outside of room. Both dogs are doing well.
:07:47. > :07:57.Let's hope they end up behind the sheep together. I can see Todd
:07:57. > :08:03.coming around at the bottom. Perfect timing. Stopped up a bit
:08:03. > :08:10.short. Yes, he did. But they both arrive now. They don't have to
:08:10. > :08:16.cross at the bottom. Don is going to be working this right hand side
:08:16. > :08:22.with Todd work out on the left. There's Todd. Yes it is a very
:08:22. > :08:26.careful lift. He is trying to keep these sheep nice and calm.
:08:26. > :08:31.whole idea of this lift is to Celt the tempo for the rest of the run.
:08:32. > :08:36.At the moment, well the sheep certainly don't lack too bothered.
:08:36. > :08:46.They're just having a little nibble. He is being that bit overcautious.
:08:46. > :09:08.
:09:08. > :09:13.Very good outruns to start, a 19 is a steady start. There is only 12
:09:13. > :09:16.and a half minutes to get through the whole thing. These are the
:09:17. > :09:22.fetch gates you can see half way up the screen. The sheep want to come
:09:22. > :09:27.on a nice central line, go through the gates and then come all the way
:09:27. > :09:32.up to Michael at this post. He is probably taking it extra steady
:09:32. > :09:37.until he gets the sheep through the fetch gates and then he will put
:09:37. > :09:43.pressure on the keep the sheep moving faster. At the moment
:09:43. > :09:48.they're nicely balanced. It is interesting you're using the term
:09:48. > :09:54.balance, it is a phrase you will use quite a bit. Yes, I and balance
:09:54. > :10:00.are two of the phrases we use. The balance is where the dog is keeping
:10:00. > :10:09.the sheep in line towards the hander. The sheep are nicely
:10:09. > :10:13.balanced on the corner. The shift - - lifts are when the sheep start
:10:13. > :10:21.moving from the posts. That wasn't bad. The judges have knocked a
:10:21. > :10:28.couple of points off for the dogs not coming on strong enough. But
:10:29. > :10:32.Mike -- Michael didn't want them come on to fast. When they approach
:10:32. > :10:37.Michael, we will get the third score for the fetch. The whole
:10:37. > :10:44.distance as the sheep will turn around Michael and head off to the
:10:44. > :10:48.gates on his left. This is where the sheep could slow down a bit, or
:10:48. > :10:53.get stropy and they don't want to come around the post, because of
:10:53. > :10:58.the pressures of us at the end of course. We are in a commentary box
:10:58. > :11:08.just behind the sheep. It keeps them contained, but also slows them
:11:08. > :11:09.
:11:09. > :11:14.up a bit. They're now on to the drive. This is the idea of the
:11:14. > :11:19.drive. To leave Michael to go up to the gates on the left. They will
:11:19. > :11:23.then turn right and go across the field, all the way to the other
:11:23. > :11:26.drive gate and then be pulled through those. Of course before you
:11:26. > :11:32.get there, and it will prove difficult, because the woods up
:11:32. > :11:40.there will be making it a tight squeeze, but first of all to
:11:40. > :11:46.negotiate these. Well the line's very good. Wow look at that Gus, a
:11:46. > :11:52.19 out of 20 for the fetch. This is a good start. As long as he doesn't
:11:52. > :11:58.go too steady. The line is good, the sheep are right in the middle.
:11:58. > :12:07.They're walking, they have not stopped. They're not strung out.
:12:07. > :12:13.Both dog independence -- both dogs come out here. Michael is very
:12:13. > :12:17.experienced. He was on One Man and His Dog in 1996 as a young handler.
:12:17. > :12:23.But what a wealth of knowledge his family have got. As they go across
:12:23. > :12:27.here, he has got to watch they don't go too close towards Michael.
:12:27. > :12:32.In orders they -- in other words they stay behind the wood. Because
:12:32. > :12:42.they have got to go behind the second drive gates. They're part
:12:42. > :12:43.
:12:43. > :12:47.way across, but they're all nicely bunched together. About seven
:12:48. > :12:52.minutes to go and he is taking things very steady. But as we saw
:12:52. > :12:57.with the young handlers, it just takes one moment to light a spark
:12:57. > :13:04.and these sheep are off. They really are. That is what he will be
:13:04. > :13:12.careful of. Now, you got to get those sheep around. Whoops! The dog
:13:12. > :13:18.is making sure that the sheep stay behind that gate itself and it's
:13:18. > :13:25.looking good. Oh that is perfection. Can the other dog come around? Oh
:13:25. > :13:31.dear, Don just pushed a bit too hard then. That is a shame.
:13:31. > :13:37.managed to get six through! Yes, he did. It only took one dog to make
:13:37. > :13:41.one false move and this caused the problem. You can see Michael has
:13:41. > :13:47.left his post and he is waiting for the sheep to arrive. This is what
:13:47. > :13:51.you're aiming for with a shed. Having to split them in half. So
:13:51. > :13:57.your looking for five and take them outside of the ring and leave the
:13:57. > :14:00.remaining five in the ring. It sounds simple, Gus. It does, but
:14:00. > :14:10.you know Michael is good at this close work. I think this is where
:14:10. > :14:15.
:14:15. > :14:25.he will make up a bit of time. It is not there yet. He is using Don.
:14:25. > :14:25.
:14:25. > :14:29.21 out of 30 scored for the cross drive. Here we go now, let's see
:14:29. > :14:39.how his maths are going to make sure we have got two sets of five
:14:39. > :14:43.
:14:43. > :14:53.here. It is coming up. Does he get that? The other dog's coming in now.
:14:53. > :14:57.
:14:57. > :15:05.Has that been accepted? We think it Kenny and Shirley are looking down
:15:05. > :15:15.over the action. They have confirmed that was good enough.
:15:15. > :15:16.
:15:16. > :15:22.Lie down. Lie down, Don. That was a successful shed. I don't
:15:22. > :15:32.know how many points the judges are going to award. It is now to the
:15:32. > :15:34.
:15:34. > :15:39.ungated pen. So, the whole idea with this pen,
:15:39. > :15:45.Gus, it is quite a large area, but there is no gate on it.
:15:45. > :15:55.No, not at all. So Michael has to stand one side. The dogs get them
:15:55. > :15:58.
:15:58. > :16:02.in on the other. One almost down the side... This close work is good.
:16:02. > :16:07.Well, he is not doing bad at all. Four minutes to go.
:16:07. > :16:11.So, this is a real test of patience for Don now.
:16:11. > :16:17.He is keeping the dog. He has to stay in the open pen to stop the
:16:17. > :16:22.sheep from coming out. While he stays there at the open pen, which
:16:22. > :16:30.he has maximum points for. That is brilliant. The dog is starting to
:16:30. > :16:40.move away! Yes, you have to certainly keep an eye on Don.
:16:40. > :16:44.So, maximum for the Open Pen, but if any sheep escape, points will be
:16:44. > :16:48.deducted. Don is looking eager to get involved in the action that is
:16:49. > :16:54.happening across the field. I like a lot of Michael's close
:16:54. > :17:00.work. We will see if this second dog can get the sheep into the pen.
:17:00. > :17:03.Three minutes left. A little flirty here.
:17:03. > :17:07.Oh, that was the dog challenging the sheep.
:17:08. > :17:12.Now, obviously, the natural instinct of the sheep is to stay
:17:12. > :17:19.together. These are keen to get across to those waiting in the pen.
:17:19. > :17:24.They certainly are. He has to keep them calm and settled.
:17:24. > :17:28.The other sheep, hopefully they stay in the pen and the other dog
:17:28. > :17:32.stays there. He has two-and-a-half minutes to go. He has the time to
:17:32. > :17:37.do it. The hardest thing is that Michael
:17:37. > :17:42.is unaware of the time. He knows he took his time earlier, but this
:17:42. > :17:47.looks great. There we are! Time to spare! That
:17:47. > :17:52.will do. Don, that will do. Well, England will be delighted
:17:52. > :17:58.with that. Let's find out how things have gone
:17:58. > :18:03.at the pen as far as the judges are concerned, but, I tell you what,
:18:03. > :18:07.Gus, the patience paid off, didn't it? I am always impressed with
:18:07. > :18:17.Michael's close work. This is where it has shown today.
:18:17. > :18:23.
:18:23. > :18:27.He lost three at the pen. Michael, you should be proud of
:18:27. > :18:31.that. Your family has a long tradition of being on One Man and
:18:31. > :18:37.His Dog. They will be applauding you. That was a good round.
:18:37. > :18:40.Yes, I was really pleased. There was only one place where you
:18:40. > :18:45.lost a few points at the second gate.
:18:45. > :18:50.Yeah, trying to be too smart, like I do. Never mind.
:18:50. > :18:53.It started off so well. The sheep were so calm. The dogs worked so
:18:53. > :18:58.well together. Yeah, they worked as well as they
:18:58. > :19:02.ever have done, I think. Are they used to working together?
:19:02. > :19:05.At home, yes. It is own the second competition I have done this year
:19:05. > :19:15.with them. Well, that was a very good start.
:19:15. > :19:19.Any idea what you may have scored? I don't know what it is out of?
:19:19. > :19:22.120. Well, 117. That was a great score.
:19:22. > :19:26.Well done. Let's see what the guys thought about that.
:19:26. > :19:31.That is a very, very good benchmark, but it can be Beatlen.
:19:31. > :19:36.It can be, but he has set the standard now.
:19:36. > :19:42.All of the other brace handlers will be watching how he managed to
:19:42. > :19:44.tackle the cross-drive. Look at tackle the cross-drive. Look at
:19:45. > :19:47.that, right down the middle. Yes, everything under control. That
:19:47. > :19:53.was great. Really good.
:19:53. > :19:59.We wandered if the drive would be too slow. He managed to curve them
:19:59. > :20:03.around the face. Unfortunately, Don moved too soon.
:20:03. > :20:10.That was a shame. He pushed them around the back side.
:20:10. > :20:16.Well, 21 points for the cross-drive. Then we wandered -- wondered if he
:20:16. > :20:20.would have the time, but he nailed would have the time, but he nailed
:20:20. > :20:24.it into the pen! Good close work. Well, a very good start from
:20:24. > :20:32.England and from Michael. Well done to him. Who is next? Well, it is
:20:32. > :20:37.Wales and our eldest, or should I say most experienced competitor.
:20:37. > :20:44.74-year-old John Griffith with his dogs, Roy and Fang.
:20:44. > :20:48.My name is John, I come from North Wales. This year I am running Fang
:20:48. > :20:53.and Roy on One Man and His Dog. I was born on a small holding up on
:20:54. > :20:59.the hill. I've been walking up and down the hills ever since. There
:20:59. > :21:03.has been slate in this valley for a long time. There used to be 3,000
:21:03. > :21:10.men working in the valleys. Not a single one anymore.
:21:10. > :21:17.Such a big change in the valley. I bred Roy and Fang myself. Roy as
:21:17. > :21:22.a young dog was very, very tough. Then all of a sudden he started
:21:22. > :21:27.listening. He has never looked back since then, but Fran was so good
:21:28. > :21:32.from day one. She is so good to handle. Now I'm training young
:21:32. > :21:36.sheepdogs. When the sheep are in the middle of the field, nice and
:21:36. > :21:40.quiet, I let the dog rules and I give them the lay down command. If
:21:40. > :21:45.you have that little bit of control, you are on your way.
:21:45. > :21:51.I have been around now for 51 years training dogs. I'm still looking
:21:51. > :22:00.for the perfect dog. I think if I'm here another 51 years, I'll still
:22:00. > :22:06.be looking for the perfect dog, but be looking for the perfect dog, but
:22:06. > :22:12.it is fun trying! Well, to me, John is the perfect handler. He really
:22:12. > :22:16.is vastly experienced as you heard from all of that. This is his
:22:16. > :22:24.seventh time on One Man and His Dog, running Roy and Fan.
:22:24. > :22:29.They are getting everything set up. He is so well known in Wales, they
:22:29. > :22:32.just say JR. just say JR.
:22:32. > :22:40.Away goes Fan. So this is the perfect timing.
:22:40. > :22:46.Holding on to Roy and he sends them off now. Hopefully looking for the
:22:46. > :22:51.dogs to arrive at a similar time. Fan going well. He is holding Roy
:22:51. > :22:57.back. He has kicked him wide now. Let's hope that they arrive at the
:22:57. > :23:03.bottom at the same time. Fan is coming around now nicely, behind
:23:03. > :23:07.the sheep. She's there. There is Malcolm, our Head of Sheep.
:23:07. > :23:12.He is holding the sheep at the post at the top there.
:23:12. > :23:15.He is there to welcome the other dogs. There we are, and the trial
:23:15. > :23:19.begins. Well, that is a good start. The
:23:19. > :23:23.dogs have stepped to their own sides. They have not crossed to the
:23:23. > :23:28.bottom. They are entitled to do that. Now that the dogs have set
:23:28. > :23:31.off with Fan on the left and Roy on the right, that is the side that
:23:31. > :23:35.they must stay throughout this particular trial.
:23:36. > :23:42.The sheep are gently moving towards the line once again to go through
:23:42. > :23:47.the middle of the fetch gates, but nothing too drastic at the moment.
:23:47. > :23:53.At the moment John is giving all whistle commands. It is interesting
:23:53. > :24:01.how they will talk to one in English when it comes to the word
:24:01. > :24:11.commands and the other in Welsh. Look at that, the dogs for the
:24:11. > :24:16.
:24:16. > :24:22.outruns, perfection! An excellent start.
:24:22. > :24:26.Easy as you like. Yes, he has won a couple of big
:24:26. > :24:29.competitions recently. I think he would love to win this particular
:24:29. > :24:38.brace competition. Fan is about to retire, but things are going well
:24:38. > :24:48.at the moment. Yet to lose a point! This is text-
:24:48. > :24:50.
:24:51. > :24:56.book trialing. So, switching to voice commands.
:24:56. > :24:59.They are very much within reach. It often gives the dog a little more
:24:59. > :25:06.confidence to hear you. Yes.
:25:06. > :25:16.And the fact that he does not need a separate set of words. He has won
:25:16. > :25:23.
:25:23. > :25:30.on English and one on Welsh. They are looking at Roy. Fan on the
:25:30. > :25:35.left, Roy on the right. You have to keep them moving on to
:25:35. > :25:44.the end of the fetch. You may notice that some of the
:25:44. > :25:52.sheep are wearing colours. They have radio mics in there.
:25:52. > :25:59.That's a good turn. He is not going to lose many points on that fetch,
:25:59. > :26:01.that is for sure. No. It is good at the moment.
:26:01. > :26:07.The maximum scores all the way along.
:26:07. > :26:12.And look at the pace of it as well. Gently pushing them towards the
:26:12. > :26:19.first of the cross-drive gates. Come on, let it be a 20.
:26:19. > :26:24.Oh! It's a 19! Now, where did Kenny and Shirley take off from there,
:26:24. > :26:34.Gus? I think that is when the dog blinked.
:26:34. > :26:37.
:26:37. > :26:42.Right! Now this is good. Just a reminder, 12-and-a-half
:26:42. > :26:46.minutes to complete the course. He can't ease off too much, but he
:26:46. > :26:56.has to line up all of the sheep properly. To get all ten through.
:26:56. > :27:01.The gap between the two gates is about seven yards.
:27:01. > :27:07.It's in a bad position to stop at the moment. He has them going again.
:27:07. > :27:14.What a trial this is. I know you were saying earlier on that John is
:27:14. > :27:19.due to -- that Fan is due to retire and Roy coming of age at seven-and-
:27:19. > :27:26.a-half. He is the stronger of the two. That
:27:26. > :27:31.is who John has to watch, but Fan has lots of experience. This is
:27:31. > :27:35.where they can gain experience. This is where the wood can be
:27:35. > :27:40.difficult as they get to the end of the cross-drive.
:27:40. > :27:44.It will be interesting to see who comes into the brace team when Fan
:27:44. > :27:49.retires. You are always looking for that perfect partnership.
:27:49. > :27:52.They take some finding, but John loves to work brace. He does well
:27:52. > :27:56.at it. Let's have a word on the woods here.
:27:56. > :28:01.It has caused some of the sheep to come down. Obviously there is not a
:28:01. > :28:06.lot of room for the dogs to get between the trees and the sheep?
:28:06. > :28:12.It will be interesting to see if Roy goes through the wood or cuts
:28:12. > :28:20.it fine and pushes the sheep high. He needs to go wide. He has gone
:28:20. > :28:30.through the wood. He had come round there. What a great job he has
:28:30. > :28:33.
:28:33. > :28:38.done! John! I bet the other competitors are groaning now!
:28:38. > :28:42.Coming up to the halfway mark as far as time is concerned. No
:28:42. > :28:52.pressure there. It is a good return. John goes to
:28:52. > :28:54.
:28:54. > :28:59.the edge of the shedding ring. Now he can walk into the ring itself.
:28:59. > :29:09.Will he let Fan do it as it is her last time, or will he save her
:29:09. > :29:22.
:29:22. > :29:27.moves that you see in the everyday life of a shepherd. Splitting the
:29:27. > :29:32.flock. Getting the sheep into a pen you can split the flock and put one
:29:32. > :29:37.in one field or one in another. If you have one with bad feet or
:29:37. > :29:41.something like, that that is how you single one off. Here ewe are
:29:41. > :29:45.looking for five and five. And they have to stay within the
:29:45. > :29:51.sawdust ring. Although it seems big on the screen, when you are there,
:29:51. > :29:54.out in the shedding ring, it is not very big at all. He must keep the
:29:54. > :30:04.sheep within the ring until he does the shed. Then things should be
:30:04. > :30:14.
:30:14. > :30:22.get one to join them. Here it comes. Here is the gap coming. He wants to
:30:22. > :30:27.bring Roy through, Roy comes in. Great stuff, come on Roy! Don't let
:30:27. > :30:33.that you get back she is going to challenge! Well done! Roy just let
:30:33. > :30:38.her know who is boss. The sheep are coming in behind him. She is
:30:38. > :30:41.awkward. That is a shame he has got to regroup them all now and start
:30:41. > :30:45.again. The reason they have to be regrouped and start again is
:30:45. > :30:53.because five of them have to go into one pen and five go into
:30:53. > :30:57.another. So it all starts again and he will laws points there. Yes, --
:30:57. > :31:00.he will lose points there. Yes. So there is some pressure now on the
:31:00. > :31:06.time side of it. Because really I would have been liking something
:31:06. > :31:16.like five minutes at this stage to get things done. So he is under
:31:16. > :31:18.
:31:18. > :31:28.pressure now. Let's hope that one is in the first group. Roy's come
:31:28. > :31:32.
:31:32. > :31:40.through well. Surely that's been accepted? He will work like steam
:31:40. > :31:46.now. John behind you! He can't hear us, Gus, he can't hear us! They
:31:46. > :31:51.certainly don't want to stay apart. John's got his work cut out here.
:31:51. > :32:01.think he will take them way away and to stop any temptation of a
:32:01. > :32:01.
:32:01. > :32:11.return. Can he do this in three minutes? I don't think so no, I
:32:11. > :32:17.would be wanting four now. There is some sheep actually in a holding
:32:17. > :32:23.pen at the right hand side and that sheep has run off. She's gone right
:32:23. > :32:27.up. Oh dear me look at that. She's jumped in. That will be the end of
:32:27. > :32:36.the course. They say that the sheep was off the course. We will have to
:32:36. > :32:44.see what the judges say. We cannot pre-empt anything, but we're to
:32:44. > :32:54.wait and see if they wave their hands. Yes. John's not sure what
:32:54. > :32:58.
:32:58. > :33:05.should happen now, but I think he will carry on. He is going carry on.
:33:05. > :33:08.Well I tell you what, you can't beat this live trialling. It never
:33:08. > :33:18.goes smoothly! We just need confirmation from the judges that
:33:18. > :33:20.
:33:20. > :33:26.there has been a disqualification. Thank you! There is the call.
:33:26. > :33:33.was a real shame. Really was a shame. Look at that, he was 20,
:33:33. > :33:39.2010, 10, 19, 27 on the cross drive and suddenly straight into the
:33:39. > :33:44.shedding ring and bang. Yes, he will have his points up to that
:33:44. > :33:52.going wrong. So although he has been disqualified, he will keep his
:33:52. > :33:55.points. Here is confirmation of a very good figures -- first half. He
:33:55. > :34:02.picked up three points in the shedding ring, but after that it
:34:02. > :34:10.was game over. 109 out of 140 for was game over. 109 out of 140 for
:34:10. > :34:16.John Griffiths. John I just want to give you a hug. We were watching,
:34:16. > :34:22.going that is a near perfect round. With the out run, the lift and the
:34:22. > :34:32.fetch, you only lost four points then what happened? Disaster. One
:34:32. > :34:35.
:34:35. > :34:41.of them things. It is the sheep. My dog did their best. I think you had
:34:41. > :34:47.a horrible rogue sheep that jumped the fence and that was disqualified.
:34:47. > :34:52.The sheep in the shedding damaging the dog. I don't like my dogs
:34:52. > :34:57.gripping sheep, it's not right. So I told them not the grip the sheep.
:34:57. > :35:04.Because what do they do in that situation. Fan is 12, that is the
:35:04. > :35:11.last time. Yes she is retired now. Well it was fantastic at the
:35:11. > :35:15.beginning, wasn't it Gus and Matt. Of course and we wish Fan the best.
:35:15. > :35:18.They did work their hearts out. That was a brilliant run-up to the
:35:18. > :35:28.stage of the shedding ring when we stage of the shedding ring when we
:35:28. > :35:34.
:35:34. > :35:41.them through that had been a superb trial. Everyone was thinking how
:35:41. > :35:46.can we beat this guy? But there was the key - she was the one. Yes. A
:35:46. > :35:51.real rogue sheep. He was given three for that shed any way. So he
:35:51. > :35:57.got points for all of the work before the break happened. Yes, he
:35:57. > :36:03.would have lost some points, but there gos that same you again. This
:36:03. > :36:07.time she's got round and once they jump into the pen like that, then
:36:07. > :36:14.it is disqualification. It shows how athletic these sheep are and
:36:14. > :36:19.how much they can change in the blink of an eye. So a disappointing
:36:19. > :36:23.round for John. 117 is what we need to beat. That is the England score
:36:23. > :36:28.for Michael. Who is up next is somebody representing Scotland and
:36:29. > :36:34.who has won the brace in the nationals four years in a row. It
:36:34. > :36:43.nationals four years in a row. It is Ewan McKinnon with Roy and Nan.
:36:43. > :36:49.Ray I leave e live near Loch Carron and I'm running Nan and Roy. It is
:36:49. > :36:55.a super area to enjoy the outdoors, wildlife and walking. There are
:36:55. > :36:58.lots of B & B and holiday cottages to service the tourist industry and
:36:58. > :37:03.craft shops. That is the main economy of the area. Especially in
:37:03. > :37:10.a time like this, we're needing tourists to visit. We get weather
:37:10. > :37:15.like this all of the time, honest. I'm encouraged to go to a local
:37:15. > :37:21.trial about 40 year ago and really a year after that I started going
:37:21. > :37:26.to open trial and snow balled from there. Roy is nine years old and he
:37:26. > :37:34.is a brother of Nan. Roy is laid back type character. Nan on the
:37:34. > :37:38.other hand is a more determined dog than Roy. All my dogs are on the
:37:38. > :37:43.same whistle. That can pwh a problem. Specially in brace
:37:43. > :37:47.competitions, but I use a slight variation and that usually works.
:37:47. > :37:51.When it doesn't, I have to resort to shouting. I have been invited to
:37:51. > :37:55.take part in the competition in previous years, but for one reason
:37:55. > :37:58.and another I haven't been able to. The first year I was invite and I
:37:59. > :38:08.had lost my dog just before the competition. Think year I'm hoping
:38:09. > :38:20.
:38:20. > :38:26.the post, Ewan with Roy and Nan. This is live and I was having a
:38:26. > :38:36.word with Ewen, he said, I'm shaking in my boots. Roy to the
:38:36. > :38:37.
:38:37. > :38:42.right, Nan to the left. Hurtling down to the sheep that are waiting
:38:42. > :38:46.at the post. You may catch a glimpse of Malcolm at the bottom
:38:46. > :38:52.with his dog, Sam. They just bring the sheep on to the top of the
:38:52. > :38:57.field. The two dogs that are rung down. There they go. And arriving
:38:57. > :39:03.with perfect timing. They haven't crossed again. We still have Nan on
:39:03. > :39:13.the left, Roy on right as they start at the end of the out run on
:39:13. > :39:17.
:39:17. > :39:22.to the lift. That seems quite a good lift. Phenomenal brace
:39:22. > :39:28.competitor is Ewen. He has won the brace competition in the nationals
:39:28. > :39:33.every year since 2008. And Nan, well they're both nine years old,
:39:33. > :39:43.they're both from the same litter, which is quite something, Nan has
:39:43. > :39:44.
:39:45. > :39:50.been involved in every one of those wins. On a good line, Gus? Yes,
:39:50. > :39:54.excellent. Nan even working on her own, she came fourth at the
:39:54. > :40:01.international supreme last weekend. So she is a superb bitch. Here she
:40:01. > :40:09.is working with her litter brother. Just two points lost from the two
:40:09. > :40:16.dogs then. An 18 and a 20. They're looking at roifplt Roy's coming up
:40:16. > :40:20.darefully. He has got to -- Roy's coming up carefully. One ewe has
:40:20. > :40:27.turned, Nan is lying down on the left, but the sheep are starting to
:40:27. > :40:32.move. Roy, don't push too hard! Oh! Six three and four missed. That was
:40:32. > :40:40.Roy pushing too hard then. But as we saw with John Griffiths, all is
:40:40. > :40:44.not over until the sheep are in the pen. 10 out of 10 both for the lift.
:40:44. > :40:49.We are back to normal again. It shows you that bit too much
:40:49. > :40:59.pressure from Roy, he got them moving, but pushed that bit too
:40:59. > :41:06.
:41:06. > :41:16.hard and it slipped. I do like Nan. I think she's got a lovely way
:41:16. > :41:17.
:41:17. > :41:21.about her. She does remind me of my old dog, Meg. Does she? Great! I
:41:21. > :41:30.think if Ewen had a favourite it would probably be Nan. She has
:41:30. > :41:35.certainly done him well over the years. She's a very careful sort of
:41:35. > :41:42.bitch. She's got the power to do this. But she is so careful in
:41:42. > :41:46.starting. She doesn't want them to burst. Roy watching it all,
:41:46. > :41:51.intently, look at the intent. he is moving on again. Both dogs
:41:51. > :42:01.lie down and the sheep are on the move again. Thank goodness. I one
:42:01. > :42:02.
:42:02. > :42:12.just thinking is it in with a chance. That is probably the end of
:42:12. > :42:14.
:42:14. > :42:24.the fetch. The points will come shortly. From Kenny and Shirley.
:42:24. > :42:26.
:42:26. > :42:30.Away they go. 13 out of 20, so seven lost on the fetch. It was
:42:30. > :42:34.deductions with the six through and the four. He is just having a bit
:42:34. > :42:42.of trouble trying to get the sheep to keep flowing. He is challenging
:42:42. > :42:47.the dogs and bringing Roy around as well. We did ask the questions at
:42:47. > :42:53.the start. One from Kevin, he said I have a six-year-old Colly cross,
:42:53. > :42:57.do the dogs have to be full Collys to compete? They can use a cross
:42:57. > :43:02.breed in ordinary trials. But they can't run it in the national
:43:02. > :43:06.competition. They have got to be registered. So the Kennel Club
:43:06. > :43:15.version of sleep dog world is the international sheepdog society and
:43:15. > :43:23.they have got to be Reger theed -- registered with them. A bit of zig-
:43:23. > :43:30.zagging, but oh! Only two! majority through. Yes the majority
:43:30. > :43:40.through, now they're racing uphill. There is a battle on here. Roy
:43:40. > :43:41.
:43:41. > :43:44.lying down, Nan looks after her side. They're taking a wide fling.
:43:44. > :43:49.So unfortunately Nan has crossed, the judges will be taking points
:43:49. > :43:52.off here. Roy is coming around. They're stringing back towards the
:43:52. > :44:01.pen. Again I think they have spotted the sheep in the holding
:44:01. > :44:11.pen at the right of the course. Well they have been stopped now.
:44:11. > :44:11.
:44:11. > :44:16.Roy moving now. Coming back with their heads up and they have split.
:44:16. > :44:22.Roy getting up. Roy on the left, Nan on the right. That is Nan now.
:44:22. > :44:25.Both dogs coming on towards these sheep and the sheep determined to
:44:25. > :44:29.push towards the end of the field. And now they know their friends are
:44:29. > :44:34.in the corner. It will be hard to get them to spin around. I think
:44:34. > :44:42.these dogs can do it. I think they will do it. But the time is tick by.
:44:42. > :44:47.That is the worry. Both dogs working together. We're just coming
:44:48. > :44:57.up to the half way stage, as far as time is concerned and Nan, just as
:44:58. > :45:04.
:45:04. > :45:07.she was earlier, edging sloely be losing valuable time.
:45:07. > :45:14.Look at that for a shot. That is wonderful.
:45:14. > :45:20.. Yes, brother and sister. Working together.
:45:20. > :45:30.They are all staring! It's a stair- off.
:45:30. > :45:38.
:45:38. > :45:43.-- it's a stare-off. Now he's moved to the shedding ring.
:45:43. > :45:52.He is waiting at the shedding ring for them to come there and do the
:45:52. > :46:01.next stage. We're on the last part of the drive.
:46:01. > :46:07.You just sense awkwardness from the sheep. When u you get that lift at
:46:07. > :46:13.the top, you start assessing the sheep if you get one, your heart
:46:13. > :46:18.sinks. It does. It really does. I bet Euan
:46:18. > :46:27.has never worked so hard, getting these dogs together, but he is
:46:27. > :46:31.winning. Coming past the ungated pen.
:46:31. > :46:35.Their off-line, but they are coming into the shedding ring. So that now
:46:35. > :46:40.is the end of the drive. It is fine for them to stop here.
:46:40. > :46:45.The whole idea is that it is steady and then you can do this. You are
:46:45. > :46:54.aiming to split them down the middle, five on one side and five
:46:54. > :47:01.on the other. Take five out and leave five in the ring.
:47:01. > :47:07.So, it is Nan to do the shedding. Only one dog can do it.
:47:08. > :47:14.Four minutes left on this round. A drive score of five out of 30.
:47:14. > :47:24.We were talking about heart sinking. If you saw the scoreboard. So, so
:47:24. > :47:31.
:47:31. > :47:34.disappointed. He is using Nan. Just the one dog
:47:34. > :47:39.is allowed. Looking for that opportunity.
:47:40. > :47:42.There is no deductions for how long it takes to do the shed, but there
:47:42. > :47:46.are deductions if an opportunity passes by.
:47:46. > :47:51.That's right. He is trying to get them to string out a little bit in
:47:51. > :47:59.the ring. Here is the chance coming. Now he has to keep them separate.
:47:59. > :48:06.Keep them separate but try to get them back together as well.
:48:06. > :48:11.Oh, dear oh, dear. That's exactly what happened with
:48:11. > :48:16.John. So they have to be re-grouped. Put back into the ring and split
:48:16. > :48:20.again. So, more points will be lost in
:48:20. > :48:28.that shedding ring. The clock keeps on ticking. It really does.
:48:28. > :48:33.It is not looking good now. Oh, dear, Gus. Just two-and-a-half
:48:33. > :48:39.minutes to go. The way that these sheep are, they
:48:39. > :48:49.are not wanting to be split, even when the dog comes between them. He
:48:49. > :48:54.
:48:54. > :49:04.still has problems. So he has to start all over again.
:49:04. > :49:13.There is a chance coming again now. Here we go again. I thought they
:49:13. > :49:22.were going to hurtle straight in. And for the third time he has to do
:49:23. > :49:29.the split. Well, what can you say about these
:49:29. > :49:39.sheep, Gus? Well, John is watching. He is commiserating, no doubt with
:49:39. > :49:40.
:49:40. > :49:50.him. He knows what it is like. John scored 109.
:49:50. > :49:56.
:49:56. > :50:06.So far, 76 forb E uan. -- 76 for Eaan.
:50:06. > :50:06.
:50:06. > :50:16.He has one minute to try to get the rest of this trial in.
:50:16. > :50:17.
:50:17. > :50:23.There is another one trying. They really are testing sheep.
:50:23. > :50:27.It looks like the other set are going back. They are. They are
:50:27. > :50:32.trying for the back pen. There you can see from the clock
:50:32. > :50:36.there is really not much time to recover this. Just half a minute is
:50:37. > :50:42.left. The first sheep are going through
:50:42. > :50:52.the cross-drive gates eat the top of the field.
:50:52. > :50:52.
:50:53. > :50:58.We are down to 12 seconds... Ten seconds. It is not looking good.
:50:58. > :51:07.That is it. What a shame.
:51:07. > :51:10.Indeed. Oh, my word! What can you? Well, Roy and Nan did their very,
:51:11. > :51:20.very ebest. Everybody know it is is just the luck of the draw with the
:51:21. > :51:21.
:51:21. > :51:31.sheep. It certainly is. It certainly is.
:51:31. > :51:31.
:51:31. > :51:36.Nan sa is saying, "Look, though, Dad." Unfortunately, the clock was
:51:37. > :51:46.the one that finished everything. And the other lot are in the woods.
:51:47. > :51:54.
:51:54. > :51:57.There is a similar tale for Ewan. That is it for Ewan, a score of 78
:51:57. > :52:02.That is it for Ewan, a score of 78 out of 140.
:52:02. > :52:07.Ewan, you worked so hard in that round, but disappointing for you, I
:52:07. > :52:13.bet? Yeah, it is. How do you feel? Disappointed, but
:52:13. > :52:18.we tried our best. It went so wrong early on.
:52:19. > :52:22.Yes. Just at my feet there. On the fetch, but around my feet both dogs
:52:22. > :52:26.seemed to take the eye off the sheep. That was it.
:52:26. > :52:32.Is that what happened? It was not a sheep being stroppy, because they
:52:32. > :52:37.were strop I sn. They were stroppy, but the dogs just didn't like the
:52:37. > :52:40.sheep. The way that the sheep were behaving. The dogs didn't like it.
:52:40. > :52:45.When they get like that, they take the eye and it is very difficult to
:52:45. > :52:49.get them to move. Well, I don't even want to tell you
:52:49. > :52:56.your final score. It was 78, but thank you very much for competing.
:52:56. > :53:01.I'm sure it's a disappointing round. With John it was a great first half.
:53:01. > :53:05.It all happened at the shed. We have to do something with this
:53:05. > :53:08.shedding ring. In order to get to the shedding ring you have to get
:53:08. > :53:15.through the second drive gate. They were coming at some pace.
:53:15. > :53:21.Yes. They tend to dash across this course and of course the dogs cross,
:53:21. > :53:26.the sheep did not stop. They challenge the dogs. He had to get
:53:26. > :53:29.both dogs to do their best to try to push them away. They had
:53:29. > :53:33.problems. We have put sheeting up against the
:53:33. > :53:37.sheep being held in the pen on the opposite side. Still they can
:53:37. > :53:42.contact them. They can hear them. Maybe they are desperate to get
:53:42. > :53:44.back to them. They have had to re- group. This is one of the many
:53:44. > :53:49.group. This is one of the many attempts.
:53:49. > :53:54.A lot of dogs would have gripped there. She didn't. It was a shame.
:53:55. > :54:02.He couldn't keep them into the ring itself.
:54:02. > :54:07.And as we saw, just out of time. Well, disappointing for Ewan.
:54:07. > :54:11.Disappointing for John from Wales. 117 is the score to beat. That is
:54:11. > :54:16.what Michael got. He was representing England. Let's see how
:54:16. > :54:21.our final competitor does. He is representing Ireland. He first
:54:21. > :54:31.appeared in One Man and His Dog in 2002. Let's meet him.
:54:31. > :54:31.
:54:31. > :54:37.It is Frank Cash tonne. I come from County Wexford. I am
:54:37. > :54:43.running this competition with Jip and Claire.
:54:43. > :54:47.I have had a family farm that's been in the family for three
:54:47. > :54:51.generations. We have been getting a lot of rain
:54:51. > :54:53.at the present, but on the bright side we have lots of grown grass
:54:54. > :54:59.growing for all of our hungry growing for all of our hungry
:54:59. > :55:04.animals. When I moved here in 1990, my wife did the herding on
:55:04. > :55:09.horseback. I did not like to venture on horseback. I thought it
:55:09. > :55:12.safer to stand on the ground. That is how I ended up with the
:55:12. > :55:17.sheepdogs. Claire is eight years old. She is very keen to get on
:55:17. > :55:22.with the job. Sometimes she can get a little exited. Jip is the
:55:22. > :55:26.opposite. He is a cool customer. He is six years old. He is a nosey
:55:27. > :55:32.type of dog, he loves to run down, jump in and have a good swim for
:55:32. > :55:39.himself. I have a lot of help on the farm from my daughters to feed
:55:39. > :55:43.the chickens, hens, ducks. We also have a pot-bellied pig, which is
:55:43. > :55:47.quite hungry! I'm really looking forward to this year's competition.
:55:47. > :55:57.There is some great competitors in it. I'm looking forward to the
:55:57. > :56:09.
:56:09. > :56:15.And Claire -- Clare is named after one of his daughters, Clare.
:56:15. > :56:25.Great stuff. So, Clare e and Jip.
:56:25. > :56:28.
:56:28. > :56:32.Clare off the right and there goes Jip. Frank is a carpenter by trade.
:56:32. > :56:36.Let's see eif he can work his magic here.
:56:36. > :56:40.She is experienced at brace running. I've seen him have some brilliant
:56:40. > :56:50.runs. At the moment things are going well. The dog is going down
:56:50. > :56:53.nicely there. Clare on the left. He has three national Brace titles
:56:53. > :57:00.to his name. Clare is over to the left.
:57:00. > :57:10.Jip is on the right. Again, he is trying for a steady
:57:10. > :57:11.
:57:11. > :57:16.lift. Clare coming up nicely. Look at that. That was a good lift.
:57:16. > :57:23.A nice start. Well the key here is literally to
:57:23. > :57:27.get round, isn't it? Let's not get past the shedding ring, he'll be
:57:27. > :57:31.doing incredibly well. He may well. He has the ability. He
:57:31. > :57:41.has the dogs to do it, but will the sheep allow him.
:57:41. > :58:08.
:58:08. > :58:11.So, as Michaela said, a score of had seen what had happened to the
:58:11. > :58:19.previous handlers would you push on if the first section to give you
:58:19. > :58:27.more time in the end or try to keep it calm? I would do more or less
:58:27. > :58:31.what Frank is doing now. He is not letting them stop, but there is a
:58:31. > :58:41.yew on the right-hand, looking all the time to escape. Jip is keeping
:58:41. > :58:48.the pressure on to her. So far, keeping them in check. I
:58:48. > :58:53.would be worried about the two sheep on the right.
:58:53. > :58:59.Those two sheep on the right now, those are the ones I would be
:58:59. > :59:03.worried about. If you were not careful they could bolt off the
:59:03. > :59:13.coursement, but they are being held. They are keen to go on the right of
:59:13. > :59:22.
:59:22. > :59:27.think Gyp's up to it. She is holding her ground. It's started.
:59:27. > :59:32.This is the awkward sheep. Here is the battle on. Are the dogs going
:59:32. > :59:38.to convince this sheep the best thing to do is turn around and join
:59:38. > :59:44.the others. Should I? Yes I think I will. Get the two of them on board.
:59:44. > :59:50.That is the way. A bit more pressure now. Claire just a bit
:59:50. > :59:58.flirty. There is another one in there that is keen to have a go.
:59:58. > :00:04.Gyp's coming on nice and steady. Well that is the first hurdle over.
:00:04. > :00:08.Now on to the drive. All these handlers making it look so easy.
:00:08. > :00:14.But there is a real knack to working a brace. There is, if
:00:14. > :00:23.things are going right, you feel great. But two dogs, if things go
:00:23. > :00:29.wrong then it is double trouble. is doing his best to keep them nice
:00:29. > :00:37.and steady at this stage. The fetch score is 18 out of 20. So scoring
:00:37. > :00:46.well. Very good. You have got to stop here and try and ease them
:00:46. > :00:52.forward. They're not shy, are they? No. Oh Claire. Claire is the one
:00:52. > :00:59.now, the smooth-coated dog lying down that he with can see. There is
:00:59. > :01:05.Gyp coming saying, I'll give you a hand Claire! Frank won the
:01:06. > :01:14.international in 1997 so there won't be any situations he has not
:01:14. > :01:21.been in. But these sheep are wanting to challenge the dogs.
:01:21. > :01:25.very good to just get them off and running again. She is going to have
:01:25. > :01:33.to stop them coming on the right hand side of the gates. She is
:01:33. > :01:40.lying down waiting for a command. That looks good to me. That is it.
:01:40. > :01:47.Round comes Gyp. Now let' hope they don't go racing across and they are
:01:47. > :01:52.again. He has got to really now get Claire to run fast up the inside 5
:01:52. > :01:57.keep them back. This is the tricky thing to stay in contact with them
:01:57. > :02:01.and not push them and go. He is going right round the back of the
:02:01. > :02:05.wood. So I think they're going to miss. It is a tremendous run. He
:02:05. > :02:10.has come round. He has covered them. The sheep have gone past the
:02:10. > :02:15.obstacle, so there will be points lost. Whether he can get them back.
:02:15. > :02:19.But they have gone past it, but they haven't on the line gone
:02:19. > :02:24.through the line as such. There is enough room to bring them back in.
:02:24. > :02:34.He is still in with a chance. We will see whether he does try to get
:02:34. > :02:34.
:02:34. > :02:40.them through the second drive gate. He is getting them back. It's over!
:02:40. > :02:44.Oh no they have come through. So unfortunately all the sheep then
:02:44. > :02:48.have missed the second drive. As they come back down. But I think
:02:48. > :02:52.there the rough coasted Gyp did a tremendous job. He has bossed those
:02:52. > :02:58.sheep and in they come into the shedding ring. Let's hope we have
:02:58. > :03:02.no breaks to the right. I wonder if Frank was thinking to himself, I'm
:03:02. > :03:12.not going to push things and just bring them up to the shedding ring
:03:12. > :03:16.
:03:16. > :03:26.and crack on. I think he would have done. Cut his losses really. Well
:03:26. > :03:29.
:03:29. > :03:34.16 out of 30. Not too costly Cor -- considering. There are still three
:03:34. > :03:40.stages to do yet. Let's see how he does. I'm very impressed with the
:03:40. > :03:43.way the Gyp dog is working. That is the one he is using to split these
:03:43. > :03:50.sheep now. There is a lot of people out there who are keen to give
:03:50. > :03:54.their dogs a go. People are asking are any other breeds ever used in
:03:54. > :03:59.sheepdog trialling. Maybe not on the field but in the yard at home.
:03:59. > :04:09.Even in sheepdog trialling we get some bearded Collys that are still
:04:09. > :04:09.
:04:09. > :04:14.working. We were talking last night about Jack Russells being heel
:04:14. > :04:21.Nippers. But yes from a trialling point of view I have never seen a
:04:21. > :04:26.Jack Russell in the trial ring, apart from one that has escaped. We
:04:26. > :04:36.have got kelpys that are used, but they often work too close to the
:04:36. > :04:40.
:04:40. > :04:45.sheep and are not strong enough really. Well Michael Longton from
:04:45. > :04:54.England at this stage in the trial just one point ahead. But he did
:04:54. > :05:02.very well. After this stage. So all is not lost yet. Four minutes to go.
:05:02. > :05:06.It looks like he has been successful. Now, can he keep them
:05:06. > :05:14.separate? Is the main thing. There is one wanting to come back and
:05:14. > :05:23.join them. Split them and get them as far away from each other as
:05:23. > :05:33.possible. We still haven't had confirmation from the judge that
:05:33. > :05:34.
:05:34. > :05:39.that shed had been accepted. Oh dear it's happened again! They're
:05:39. > :05:46.break again. Are they going to get together. Oh my word. Now... And
:05:46. > :05:55.she came the wrong side then. Claire came on the wrong side of
:05:55. > :06:00.the sheep then. So we're back to now what happened to Ewen. Troubles.
:06:00. > :06:07.Ewen and John. This is just incredible. Yes. Even if that shed
:06:07. > :06:17.was accepted, it is irrelevant now, because Michael, he knows he's got
:06:17. > :06:19.
:06:19. > :06:24.it. Kevin from Wales. He knows. The brace is his. Well this is where
:06:24. > :06:31.Gyp, after all this good work could well lose her temper and do a grip,
:06:31. > :06:40.which we don't want. But he is working well. At least Gyp has that
:06:40. > :06:50.bit more push than Claire. That is why he is using them. So back into
:06:50. > :06:51.
:06:51. > :06:57.the shedding ring they have got to come. Well we have only got two
:06:57. > :07:01.minutes to go. It's not looking good. Absolutely no chance. You
:07:01. > :07:11.would think it could happen once, but three times. Yes, very
:07:11. > :07:19.
:07:19. > :07:28.disappointing for all the handlers no doubt. Frank very patiently
:07:28. > :07:33.starting all over again. Oh it is a hat off job! Trying Eigg now.
:07:33. > :07:40.Encouraging the -- Trying everything now. Encouraging the
:07:40. > :07:45.sheep to split. They're breaking like mad. But she will, Gyp will do
:07:45. > :07:49.it and stop those sheep. Done a great job there. Oh back together
:07:49. > :07:59.again! There is a minute to go and still it looks as if nothing's
:07:59. > :08:01.
:08:02. > :08:07.happened in the shedding ring. That is just extraordinary. What a shame.
:08:07. > :08:11.There is nothing he can do with 45 seconds to do. But they will come
:08:11. > :08:18.back into the shedding ring and no doubt Frank will do his best to
:08:18. > :08:21.finish with his head held high. know one of the local handlers said
:08:21. > :08:25.the biggest trouble with these sheep will be splitting they will
:08:25. > :08:31.and he was right. They don't like being separated. They just want the
:08:31. > :08:36.try and stick together. But it's not looking good now. Oh dear we
:08:36. > :08:46.are down into the last quarter minute. 10 seconds now and below
:08:46. > :08:48.
:08:48. > :08:54.that. There will be nothing awarded here. Time! Unfortunately time up.
:08:54. > :09:01.What a shame. What a shame indeed. But again it is the same story,
:09:01. > :09:11.John knows exactly how he feels. As does Ewen. Well the international
:09:11. > :09:11.
:09:11. > :09:16.champion, the former international champion from 1997 runs out of time.
:09:16. > :09:22.So confirmation then of the same story a brilliant start and then
:09:22. > :09:28.come to the shedding, and it all goes drastically wrong. Finished
:09:28. > :09:35.with three zeros, that is a score of 92 out of 140. So that is third
:09:35. > :09:39.of 92 out of 140. So that is third out of four. Ray Oh Frank! You had
:09:39. > :09:43.the same problem as John didn't you? Yes. It was all going
:09:43. > :09:48.brilliantly until the drive and then what happened? It started when
:09:49. > :09:58.I got through the gate here. They were testing the dogs. They got
:09:58. > :10:03.through the gate and took off. And the dog went to side and they
:10:03. > :10:08.couldn't catch him quick enough and the shedding ring is off. They went
:10:08. > :10:13.whield the sheep. Ewen said the problem was the dogs took their
:10:13. > :10:18.eyes off the sheep. But that is not what happened with your dogs.
:10:18. > :10:21.the dog went wide and when they got to the shedding ring, then I took
:10:21. > :10:26.the chance to maybe I would split off Faye and push them on. I
:10:26. > :10:31.thought I had pulled the other dog in, the minute I went to call her,
:10:32. > :10:40.everything went. It was a good start, disappointing finish. Let's
:10:40. > :10:44.see what Gus and Matt have to say about that. Another disappointing
:10:44. > :10:51.round. MATT BAKER: A great effort. None of them let anyone down it was
:10:51. > :10:59.just the sheep. Bolshy is the word to describe them. Oh dear just...
:10:59. > :11:02.There is two cogst -- dogs and that ewe was challenging from the word
:11:02. > :11:07.go. There is not much you can do when they start stamping and
:11:07. > :11:12.looking and saying, you don't bother me. But there is the first
:11:12. > :11:17.bother me. But there is the first of the cross drive gates. And then
:11:17. > :11:21.they tend to race and they race across here. They're probably
:11:21. > :11:26.hurtling to the higher ground, because the right hand side of the
:11:26. > :11:30.course is higher and sheep will naturally go uphill. Because they
:11:30. > :11:36.can sense action with the sheep in the corner. And the trouble was the
:11:36. > :11:45.dog went very wide, but did stop them get eight way and then we had
:11:45. > :11:50.this problems in the shedding ring. Even they separated them, the best
:11:50. > :11:54.that they could, city still got back together. -- they still got
:11:54. > :11:59.back together. The sun came out for the finish, but unfortunately they
:11:59. > :12:02.the finish, but unfortunately they didn't end up in the pen. Ray after
:12:02. > :12:12.those incredible performances let's remind ourselves of the score tpwrs
:12:12. > :12:19.
:12:19. > :12:24.that round and see what happened to England are in the lead. A the
:12:24. > :12:34.others had disappointing rounds. 78 was the lowest with Ewen.
:12:34. > :12:35.
:12:35. > :12:40.Everything went wrong for poor o' - - old Ewen. Look at the final
:12:40. > :12:50.scores, Ireland at the top with 127 when we add the brace scores to the
:12:50. > :12:54.young handlers. Actually remarkably close aren't they? Look at that,
:12:54. > :12:59.there is just one point in pit. It is extraordinary. I can't believe
:12:59. > :13:04.that happened three times. I can't believe the whole competition today,
:13:04. > :13:09.pause so many people had rounds they just didn't expect at all.
:13:09. > :13:13.It feels so calm now, but you have to mention the fact that this has
:13:13. > :13:17.been live. And the composure for us to be out thr was something. But it
:13:18. > :13:24.doesn't end. There is more excitement tomorrow when it is turn
:13:24. > :13:31.of the singles competition thasm --. That is one man and one dog. There
