0:00:18 > 0:00:20Hello, and welcome back to the beautiful

0:00:20 > 0:00:23but slightly overcast Gower peninsula in Wales

0:00:23 > 0:00:25for the second day of our competition,

0:00:25 > 0:00:28and it promises to be a dramatic climax.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31And it has taken a bit of a turn for the worse, the weather.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33But we've got some hardy shepherds and some very hardy dogs,

0:00:33 > 0:00:35and that's all that matters.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37- And a couple of hardy presenters as well, to throw in.- Yeah.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40If you thought yesterday was tense,

0:00:40 > 0:00:44then today is going to get a whole lot tougher as we enter our final round.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48Our four national teams are back to battle it out for the title of

0:00:48 > 0:00:51One Man And His Dog Champions 2012.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53And today they face the Singles round.

0:00:53 > 0:00:58Matt and Gus will be on hand to explain everything you need to know as we go along.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Indeed, but before we do get on with the competition,

0:01:01 > 0:01:05let's remind ourselves who made it to the pen and who got stuck in the shedding ring yesterday.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08We started with the Young Handlers round.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12Sean Corrigan from Ireland and his dog, Tex, started the competition off in fine style,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14not only taking the Young Handlers title,

0:01:14 > 0:01:18but dropping the least amount of points of all of the handlers so far.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22What a finish it was, and of course we then finished off with the Brace,

0:01:22 > 0:01:26that is one man and two dogs, where things really get interesting.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28England were first out.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Michael Longton, then, walks out to the post,

0:01:33 > 0:01:37and making a bit of history here as the first handler on a live One Man And His Dog.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Maximum points, that's brilliant.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44- This looks great. Oh!- There we are!

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Time to spare.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Well, to me, John is the perfect handler.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51He's so well-known that in Wales they just say "JR".

0:01:53 > 0:01:57- Oh!- Oh, yes! - What a great job he's done.- John!

0:01:58 > 0:01:59Oh, dear me! Look at that!

0:01:59 > 0:02:04After a strong start, it's all over for John and his dogs.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08- Phenomenal brace competitor, is Ewan. - They're going to go well past.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11The dogs have crossed. The judges will be taking points off, here.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Oh, my word. What can you say to Ewan?

0:02:15 > 0:02:20Frank won the International back in 1997. Oh, it's started.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Now, here's the battle on.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26- Oh, dear!- Oh! It's happened again!

0:02:27 > 0:02:29So England win the Brace.

0:02:29 > 0:02:34What a day of trialling we had. It was so, so eventful, and let's have a look

0:02:34 > 0:02:36and see how things are looking on the leaderboard overnight.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39So we had Ireland out there at 178 points,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42one point ahead of England.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Scotland, well, they are looking a little bit off the pace, 156,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48but Wales are sitting nicely there

0:02:48 > 0:02:51in third with 170.

0:02:51 > 0:02:52It's a close one, this.

0:02:52 > 0:02:57It's going to be a good competition, isn't it? Cos anyone can win with those scores.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Anyway, here's the man who had his eagle eye on all the action.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03- It's our expert, Gus Dermody.- Hi. - Gus, we had so many comments yesterday,

0:03:03 > 0:03:08and I thought the same thing, that the winners yesterday were the sheep!

0:03:08 > 0:03:11- They were feisty! - I think you're right, they were really, really stroppy.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Especially for the poor fellas running Brace.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Do you think they're going to calm down a bit today because it's damp?

0:03:16 > 0:03:20Yeah, quite often the rain can just slow them down that little bit,

0:03:20 > 0:03:22so they could be steadier today.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Hopefully not too much, though, cos we don't want it to be too predictable, do we?

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- It won't be, I'll guarantee. - Yeah, that's not going to happen.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Well, now it's time to start the competition, so, Matt and Gus,

0:03:31 > 0:03:33I'm going to send you off to the commentary box.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Yesterday I used voice commands, today I've improved my skills, I've got a whistle.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40- You are incredibly brave. - Is that the right way up? - That is the right way up, yeah.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42BLOWS INTO WHISTLE - NO SOUND

0:03:42 > 0:03:46- WHISTLES - Off you go.- I'm terribly confused now, I don't know what to do.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49Needed to practise that a bit, really.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53Once again we have our two judges, Shirley Cropper and Kenny Donald,

0:03:53 > 0:03:56primed on top of their tower in the drizzle, there,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58ready for the action.

0:03:58 > 0:03:59So let's get started.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02It's the Singles round, that's one man and one dog,

0:04:02 > 0:04:06but this time they've got two flocks of sheep to contend with.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09At the moment, Scotland are lying in fourth place,

0:04:09 > 0:04:11which means they are up first in the Singles.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14But with 150 points up for grabs in this round,

0:04:14 > 0:04:18anything could happen, and let me tell you, it probably will.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21So let's meet today's first competitor and his dog.

0:04:21 > 0:04:27Representing Scotland is someone who won the International just last weekend.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29So certainly a strong competitor to start with.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32It's Ian Brownlie with his dog Mo.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38I'm Ian Brownlie from Alloa in Scotland.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41I'll be running Mo in this year's One Man And His Dog.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48I live with my wife and family on a 120-acre stock farm,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50and we have 600 cross sheep.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56The weather's quite unpredictable, and I think it gets worse as each year goes past.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Farming can be a difficult life,

0:04:58 > 0:05:01but there are days it gives you great satisfaction.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06I started running dogs when I was 11 years old,

0:05:06 > 0:05:10and ran for five and six years, but became distracted as a teenager

0:05:10 > 0:05:15with the usual distractions, and came back to it in later life.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Mo is four years old.

0:05:17 > 0:05:23She was bred here, bred her myself, and she's a great nature,

0:05:23 > 0:05:27she's got a... Very intelligent, and good feel for the stock.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32I've five dogs that help me with everyday work on the farm.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Their contribution is invaluable on a farm like this.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38The work's never done.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42I've been lucky enough to have been on

0:05:42 > 0:05:46One Man And His Dog Young Handlers many years ago, but unfortunately

0:05:46 > 0:05:50I missed out when I won the Scottish National a few years back, due to foot-and-mouth,

0:05:50 > 0:05:52so hopefully we'll make amends for it this year.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00Well, what a lovely shot of Mo, there, to finish that little film on,

0:06:00 > 0:06:03and no doubt Mo will look quite similar at the end of this round.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06But, Ian, then, to the post, with Mo.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Looks like she's going off to the right-hand side.

0:06:09 > 0:06:14So Ian is International Supreme and Scottish National champion of 2012,

0:06:14 > 0:06:16but with a different dog.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20What a talented fellow he is. It's with another dog, but here I think

0:06:20 > 0:06:23it's his more consistent dog that he's running today,

0:06:23 > 0:06:24and she's called Mo.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28It's quite deceptive, the length of this outrun, isn't it, Gus?

0:06:28 > 0:06:31I mean, we were up there this morning

0:06:31 > 0:06:33having a good look back to the commentary box,

0:06:33 > 0:06:34and it is quite some way.

0:06:34 > 0:06:39Yes, yes it is, and it's rather wet down on the right-hand side.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41But she's come to the end of the outrun, now.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43Well, if you were watching the trial yesterday,

0:06:43 > 0:06:45it's a very similar start,

0:06:45 > 0:06:47so you've got the outrun where the dog runs all the way around

0:06:47 > 0:06:49the outside of the field,

0:06:49 > 0:06:51and then arrives behind the sheep for this, the lift.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54You can see them there standing at the post,

0:06:54 > 0:06:57and then they have to move away from that nice and gently,

0:06:57 > 0:06:59and this then starts the tempo for the rest of the run.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01So that a very, very nice lift indeed,

0:07:01 > 0:07:04and they'll walk all the way up the field

0:07:04 > 0:07:08and then through those gates that you can see in the centre of your screen.

0:07:08 > 0:07:09Yes, that was very impressive.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Those sheep were ready to challenge the dog but she was up to the challenge,

0:07:13 > 0:07:15she didn't rush at them, she came on steady,

0:07:15 > 0:07:18and they backed off, they've turned and now they're under way.

0:07:18 > 0:07:23Judges' scores are in and look at that. What a start!

0:07:23 > 0:07:2520 out of 20 for the outrun,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28and 10 out of 10 for that lift.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32And going on track beautifully here, as well, on this, the fetch.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38A very calm aura, hasn't he, Ian,

0:07:38 > 0:07:42- the way he transfers that energy across to the dog.- He does.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44And she's quite steady.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48But the sheep, every time they stop, they'll challenge the dog.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52They're a strange breed, this particular group.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57But this is nice. Nicely positioned to come through the fetch gates.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Look at that. Absolutely dead centre.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04And that's good.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07But this the difficult bit.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10I think the most difficult part of the trial is going to be

0:08:10 > 0:08:11- the next section.- Mmm.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Yeah, you see Mo running with five sheep at the moment.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16That number is about to double

0:08:16 > 0:08:19as soon as they get to this white post, just ahead of them.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23And yes, Gus, talk us through what the idea is from here,

0:08:23 > 0:08:27because this is the challenge. This very, very moment here.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34Oh, that's good. That's an excellent start to the second outrun.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39So that a look-back command, because there's a second set of sheep

0:08:39 > 0:08:42at the top of the field that Mo had to turn around on her shoulder,

0:08:42 > 0:08:44then run all the way back

0:08:44 > 0:08:46to gather this second lot.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48So, there you can see 19 out of 20

0:08:48 > 0:08:50for that first fetch.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52Mo runs all the way back on her second outrun,

0:08:52 > 0:08:55and then there'll be points for another lift as well.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02You can see Malcolm, our Head of Sheep,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05just at the very back of your shot with his dog Sammy,

0:09:05 > 0:09:08just holding the second little flock, and now they lead the field.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10IAN SHOUTS

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Now Ian's using his voice.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Going very well indeed. Look at this.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Second outing, second lift, 20 and 10.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24He's using his voice to emphasise these commands,

0:09:24 > 0:09:26to keep the sheep away from the second group,

0:09:26 > 0:09:29because they're going to pull like mad now to our right,

0:09:29 > 0:09:33- as they want to join the other sheep.- Away back.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36That is why he's talking to her.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Here, here. Here, here, here.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42And now he's going to re-group the two lots of sheep.

0:09:42 > 0:09:43Walk up.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50Walk up. Atta girl.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54As you can see, some of the sheep in that flock have red collars on.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56There's three of them in the ten,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59and that comes into play a little bit further on in the trial,

0:09:59 > 0:10:03as you will see when we get to the shedding ring.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Now they're all grouped up nicely, and coming towards Ian.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12He does use a combination of whistles and voice,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14and Mo reacts instantly to that.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Walk up.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21A little bit of zig-zagging as they come up towards him,

0:10:21 > 0:10:26and the danger point is going to be as they start to go on to the drive

0:10:26 > 0:10:30and come to this end of the fetch, they may well challenge the dog.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34This is where they were awkward yesterday for the brace men.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36That's an awkward sheep on the outside there.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40She's stamping, she's going towards the dog. This is cheeky.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42But Mo's... Now, this is what we call power.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44The fact of that dog walking up to that sheep

0:10:44 > 0:10:48and backing her into the rest. That was tremendous.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51It's a pity the judges can't give bonus points for that.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53That was brilliant. That was brilliant.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57She's having another go, but I tell you what,

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Mo is saying "No, I'm in charge."

0:10:59 > 0:11:02And is she in charge! Now, that's good.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Many a dog would have flown in and either gripped the sheep

0:11:06 > 0:11:09or gone down the side of the other sheep. That was really well done.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13So the sheep then off and running on to the cross drive.

0:11:13 > 0:11:18Idea here is for Ian and Mo to drive the sheep away from themselves,

0:11:18 > 0:11:23through the first set of gates there, then they'll cross horizontally,

0:11:23 > 0:11:27go right across in front of Ian to the second set of cross drive gates.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Well, this is a good line towards the first drive gates.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40They need to be turned now towards the right.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Mo will be coming round, she is coming round

0:11:43 > 0:11:47the outside of the gates, all ten sheep through the gates.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51And turning now on to the cross drive.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Just have a look for the second fetch.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56It's very good indeed, look at that!

0:11:56 > 0:12:0220 out of 20, just one point dropped in the whole round so far.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Well, Scotland are really challenging now.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06My word, they might have started the lowest,

0:12:06 > 0:12:08but this is going to take some beating.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Yeah, Scotland were lying in fourth overnight.

0:12:15 > 0:12:21So this, yesterday, proved to be the trickiest part of the course.

0:12:21 > 0:12:27Yes. He's on line, but the difficult bit is that Mo is on the inside,

0:12:27 > 0:12:29she's got to go right the way round when the time comes,

0:12:29 > 0:12:34and turn the sheep fast to get them through those gates.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37There she is coming through the trees, coming round.

0:12:37 > 0:12:41- It's looking good.- By, that's impressive!- It's looking very good.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45Another challenge at the back, she's got to watch these others.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49That might let that back sheep have some false confidence,

0:12:49 > 0:12:51in that it thought she was walking away.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55But she was going on the commands, to push the other sheep round.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Here we are, here she is challenging again.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Go on, Mo. Nice and steady.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07- Well, she is a bad, awkward sheep, this one.- Walk up.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- Oh! Ooh.- I tell...

0:13:10 > 0:13:12- Oh! Well!- Now then.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15There was a little bit, there, of contact.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17But I think the judges might let it go,

0:13:17 > 0:13:20because it was actually a bit of self-defence, that, Gus.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23It certainly was, it certainly was.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26It was hard work, she did everything she could,

0:13:26 > 0:13:28but the sheep was going to challenge her.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32Lie down. Away. Lie down. Come out.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34OK, so now we have the ten sheep into this ring,

0:13:34 > 0:13:38the idea is to take one of the sheep with a red collar

0:13:38 > 0:13:40away from the rest of the bunch.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42There's three in there with collars.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49As calm as you like, Ian will just gently pick his moment,

0:13:50 > 0:13:53try and get a little bit of separation, then call Mo into him.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Here's the one on the right.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- Away, away.- Just three points lost on that cross drive.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Lie down. Away back.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08So four lost altogether so far. Incredibly impressive.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09This looks good, Gus.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12The sheep have got to stay within this ring,

0:14:12 > 0:14:14so he's right on the edge of the ring here,

0:14:14 > 0:14:17they've got to be in when he calls Mo through for that single sheep.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23So he's going closer now into the ring.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28Away back. Lie down. Stay. Away.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Lie down, walk up.

0:14:32 > 0:14:353.5 minutes, Gus, left to single one of these off and pen.

0:14:35 > 0:14:40These aren't going to be easy, they're tucking into the middle.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Lie down, lie down.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44The instant he asks her through, she'll come,

0:14:44 > 0:14:48but it's just a matter of trying to prise this one ewe on to the end.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51He's in with an opportunity here.

0:14:51 > 0:14:52Get up, get up.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00But the other collared ewe's come, and she's facing the dog.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05- It is just one.- You can only take the one. Here he is,

0:15:05 > 0:15:07he's asked her in, and she's taken it

0:15:07 > 0:15:09and the judges I think have accepted it.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Sounded like it.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15So that's good. That's good.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19Regroup the sheep in the shedding ring.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21So Ian there just checking his watch,

0:15:21 > 0:15:25I think he cleverly started his stopwatch as the round began,

0:15:25 > 0:15:27so he knows exactly how much time he's got.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29He often does time himself, yes.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34It's 10 out of 10 for that single.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36This is going to be very, very difficult to beat.

0:15:36 > 0:15:41I just hope that this consistency can continue at the pen.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45The trial will be over as soon as Ian and Mo put all of these sheep

0:15:45 > 0:15:47into this pen and close the gate.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49On your feet.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51Well, they're nice and steady. They're well bunched,

0:15:51 > 0:15:55they're going slightly uphill towards the open gate.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01- Come out. - She's got to get right the way round

0:16:01 > 0:16:03and stop the sheep going down the side.

0:16:04 > 0:16:09He could have a leader there. The ewe that was looking round.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14Gently does it. She's going in, she's taking the others with her.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18And there goes the last one in now, and there we are.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21Now that is going to really take some beating.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25That is very, very, very, VERY impressive

0:16:25 > 0:16:26and a tough act to follow.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Every single one of those handlers that's to come knows

0:16:29 > 0:16:33what a difficult job they've got to do to try and beat him.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35However, as far as countries are concerned,

0:16:35 > 0:16:39Scotland were way off the mark with 158, down in fourth.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43But the comeback is on.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Look at that. Look at the scores!

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Only dropped one point on the first fetch,

0:16:47 > 0:16:49three on that drive.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Just incredible. 146/150.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00- Ian, you must be very pleased with that.- Pretty pleased, yeah.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04That was a fabulous round. I mean, you've just won the international,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07that could very well win you the singles today.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09We'll wait and see. It's very early.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11The sheep are tremendous now for some reason,

0:17:11 > 0:17:12whether it's the rain, I don't know.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16- You say that, but one was being a bit standoffish! - She was a little naughty!

0:17:16 > 0:17:19We were really impressed when we were watching it,

0:17:19 > 0:17:22how well Mo did with that stroppy sheep.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24Yeah, she's more patience than I have.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27Complete control, the way that the dog looked at the sheep

0:17:27 > 0:17:30- and said "No, I'm in charge." - Yeah, yeah. Typical woman.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33- Does she always work so well? - Usually, yes.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36- Do you know how many points you dropped? Have a guess.- Not a clue.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40It was a remarkable round. It was nearly perfect.

0:17:40 > 0:17:44- You dropped four points, 146... - Whoa!

0:17:44 > 0:17:49..out of 150. That is going to be extremely difficult to beat.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52- A great score for Scotland, and as I say...- We need one!

0:17:52 > 0:17:56You should be very pleased. And you did it in a very quick round as well, with time to spare.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58I saw you looking at your stopwatch at one stage,

0:17:58 > 0:18:00you were keeping an eye on the time.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03A good round, a good start to One Man And His Dog, the singles round.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05- Well done.- Thanks very much.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Very nice to have an international champion to rely on, Gus,

0:18:08 > 0:18:11to come out. He started the round, it was so beautiful,

0:18:11 > 0:18:14and the pace of it was just perfect.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17It was nice and steady, it wasn't rushed,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19and that is how he just set the tempo.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Yes, she's very careful.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23The sheep might think it's in with a chance,

0:18:23 > 0:18:25but look at this for the dog for power.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28How she can walk on to that nose to nose,

0:18:28 > 0:18:30and back she goes into the rest of them.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35I mean, look. Just... "Do not mess with me," is what Mo said.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38And it happened a few times as well.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41But it says a lot for the dog, to actually keep its composure.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Yes. Yes.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46Now, into the shedding ring, a choice of three,

0:18:46 > 0:18:48but can only take the one.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51The instant that he asked her in, look at this, straight onto her.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54That ewe didn't want to come away, but my word, she did.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58And indeed, it just continued on,

0:18:58 > 0:19:00all the way to the end of that round.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03And what... That is a textbook pen, to be honest.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05It doesn't get much better than that.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09No, that was a brilliant finish to a brilliant round.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12What a fabulous start to the singles!

0:19:12 > 0:19:15That shows you how it should be done. A near-perfect round.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18And it's going to be very difficult to beat that.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22I bet the other teams are quaking in their boots. Who's up next?

0:19:22 > 0:19:26Representing Wales is someone who's been a winner on One Man And His Dog

0:19:26 > 0:19:31as a Young Handler in 1994, at the tender age of 13.

0:19:31 > 0:19:35Will he be as lucky today? Well, let's meet him. It's Kevin Evans.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42My name is Kevin Evans. I'm from Brecon in South Wales.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46In One Man And His Dog this year, I'll be running Greg.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49I was brought up on the family farm here in Libanus, close to Brecon.

0:19:49 > 0:19:53We graze 300 sheep, it's a hill breed, the Brecon Hill Cheviot.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56# Come down from the mountain

0:19:56 > 0:19:59# You have been gone too long... #

0:19:59 > 0:20:02My father, when he's not training dogs,

0:20:02 > 0:20:05he's out doing all the sheep work on the farm. Every day,

0:20:05 > 0:20:09he has to go to the mountain to raise the sheep up. They're a hefted flock,

0:20:09 > 0:20:12living up on the Brecon Beacons, they always head back for the home farm.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14So you've got to go up there

0:20:14 > 0:20:17and push them back up to the good grass.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18I'm a builder by trade.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21But I'm spending more and more time at home on the family farm,

0:20:21 > 0:20:24helping run the farm, training and breeding dogs.

0:20:26 > 0:20:30Greg is four years old now. He's fairly solid and cool.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32He's a good all-rounder really.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35And he's been a very lucky dog for me in trials.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39I've been on One Man And His Dog as a Young Handler.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41It seems like a long time ago now.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44'Look at the concentration on his face.'

0:20:44 > 0:20:47Me and Michael Longton both had really good runs,

0:20:47 > 0:20:49but that day I was lucky enough to win.

0:20:49 > 0:20:54'In they go. And the gate shuts behind them. Very good.'

0:20:54 > 0:20:58I'm looking forward to representing Wales on One Man And His Dog.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00I hope everything goes OK and I don't let the side down.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07From the boy to the man, and as you can see,

0:21:07 > 0:21:09Kevin's grown up a little bit.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11And as we saw in that little film, he was planning to run Greg,

0:21:11 > 0:21:16but unfortunately Greg is injured. So this is Jimmy,

0:21:16 > 0:21:20and Jimmy has been a European nursery or young dog champion.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23So he's got a good pedigree, Gus.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25Looking forward to seeing how he runs.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28He's gone off to the right-hand side, gone wide as well,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30all the way around the outside of the trees.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33A very sharp dog, a very fast dog.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37And he'll certainly give a good challenge to the last run.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41As he goes down the right-hand side against the wood.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48He was up against Michael Longton in the Young Handlers way back when,

0:21:48 > 0:21:53- and there he is again, looking on. - Another fella that's grown up!- Yes.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57- Michael, of course, running the brace.- And did very well.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01So the brakes are on for Jimmy as he's halted behind.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03Good outrun. There's the lift.

0:22:09 > 0:22:15A bit of a sharper lift than maybe the last run, Ian Brownlie's lift.

0:22:15 > 0:22:20But they're well under control, they're coming in nice and steady.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26- That's a good line as well. - It is that, the dog's on his feet.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31He is showing good balance, good control.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33Working fairly close to them.

0:22:37 > 0:22:4020 out of 20 for that very wide outrun,

0:22:40 > 0:22:44and as Gus said, a sharper lift. But still, maximum points.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47Yes. So another brilliant start.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51- Whoops!- Oh, have I spoken too soon?

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Yes! Three go round the side of the fetch gate.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57Just that little spurt of energy then.

0:22:57 > 0:22:59They might have got slightly spooked by those gates

0:22:59 > 0:23:02- and decided to just part company. - Yes, yes.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Just that little bit of extra pressure that was on,

0:23:05 > 0:23:06and they flirted round.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Now he's asked it back, and he'll have to watch,

0:23:09 > 0:23:11that's the second request.

0:23:11 > 0:23:15Now he's asked him round and he's going extremely wide.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18He's crossed the lane. He's looking in.

0:23:18 > 0:23:22He's going to do a wide outrun round to get the second group of sheep.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28He could lose a few points for going a little bit too wide.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32But he's on line now, and coming in behind them.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34I tell you, Kevin will be very pleased that

0:23:34 > 0:23:36he's looking over the right shoulder.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40If he'd have been looking over his left, he could have lost him.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44Certainly. But now he's coming down the field.

0:23:46 > 0:23:52So that first fetch from the top posts, the middle there, was 14/20.

0:23:52 > 0:23:57- Points deducted for the sheep that didn't go through the gates.- Yes.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59So he's got a lot to try and do to make up now.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04Wales were third overnight.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12For the second outrun, he gets two points lost.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15A little bit too wide, but maybe it was the second call

0:24:15 > 0:24:18that lost him those points, and then 10 out of 10 for the lift.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20Yes, he didn't go back instantly,

0:24:20 > 0:24:22and that's why just a couple of points.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25When he did go back, it was OK, rather wide,

0:24:25 > 0:24:26but he did go back OK.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Now he's got these sheep settled,

0:24:28 > 0:24:30this time they're going right through the middle,

0:24:30 > 0:24:35all five of them, as they come through the fetch gates

0:24:35 > 0:24:38towards the first group of five sheep.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42And the girls at the front look very relaxed at the moment!

0:24:42 > 0:24:44Just taking on a bit of grass.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48As the remaining five join the party.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55Well, there we are, nice and steady.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58Kevin just checking left and right, seeing how much room he's got,

0:24:58 > 0:25:01how he can bring these sheep around him

0:25:01 > 0:25:04and keep them as close as he can to him, and the handler's post,

0:25:04 > 0:25:07at the end of the fetch and before the drive starts.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11A gentle, but nice little pace on.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14He has got to get them all the way around him.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16And then off onto the cross drive.

0:25:16 > 0:25:17Stand.

0:25:17 > 0:25:22Yes, he is a younger dog and he's just that little bit sharper

0:25:22 > 0:25:26than Mo that we saw on the last competition.

0:25:26 > 0:25:27Here he is coming round.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30Let's see how he manages them at this crucial point.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33- There's no challenge here. - Stand.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Or is there? No, no.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39They have accepted the dog and they are going onto the drive.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Stand! Stand!

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Here's a reminder of how the drive works.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47Sheep will leave the post where Kevin is standing,

0:25:47 > 0:25:51go up through those gates, they will turn right and then this

0:25:51 > 0:25:54is where the course goes slightly uphill, past the woods and then

0:25:54 > 0:25:58bend round through the second gates and then into the shedding ring.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Well, we had a stop but now he has got them going again,

0:26:03 > 0:26:06so he has got to try and keep this flowing all the time

0:26:06 > 0:26:08without going too fast.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12Spreading out a little as they come towards the first drive gates.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14HE WHISTLES

0:26:16 > 0:26:1920/20 for the second fetch.

0:26:19 > 0:26:24So lost a few so far, but it's a good comeback.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27It is - let's hope he's not turned too soon.

0:26:27 > 0:26:31No, he hasn't. He has them on a good line. Are they going to gather speed

0:26:31 > 0:26:34now as they go across from our left to right?

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Very difficult to monitor the speed of the sheep

0:26:36 > 0:26:37as they are going up there.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40Keep the dog still in contact so it can get round to bring them

0:26:40 > 0:26:43back in for the second cross drive gates,

0:26:43 > 0:26:46but not push them too fast so that they lose it.

0:26:46 > 0:26:52Absolutely. But the line is good, he's just holding the dog back here.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54Stand!

0:26:54 > 0:26:58- Will this dog go through the wood when the time comes?- Stand!

0:26:58 > 0:27:04- You need to go round the back of the first gate.- Stand!

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Of the cross drive gates. He's hanging on, waiting for the command.

0:27:07 > 0:27:11- Stand!- There it is.- Stand!

0:27:11 > 0:27:13He's going a little bit deep into the wood.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16He might be penalised here for a little bit too wide.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20But he's asking him now, asking him round. He's come through the wood.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22He's come round.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26- Stand!- And every one through. - Brilliant.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28He's very, very keen, isn't he, Jimmy?

0:27:28 > 0:27:32You can hear that Kevin is shouting at him quite a lot to stand,

0:27:32 > 0:27:33to put the brakes on.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37He's quite keen to get up on them.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40Yeah, he really is... um...a very sharp, quick dog.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42Stand!

0:27:45 > 0:27:50And the sheep are coming nicely now into the shedding ring.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53Stand! Stand!

0:27:54 > 0:27:58So it's the... This is the point where Kevin will be looking for

0:27:58 > 0:28:03that moment to just peel off one of the sheep with the red collars on.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05Stand.

0:28:05 > 0:28:10Out of 30, 29 scored for the cross drive. Doing very, very well indeed.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12What a comeback this is so far.

0:28:16 > 0:28:20Yes. Now, I've not seen this dog singling before,

0:28:20 > 0:28:23so I'm quite interested to see how he'll react

0:28:23 > 0:28:24when Kevin gets the opportunity.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26Stand! Stand!

0:28:28 > 0:28:30Keep. Stand.

0:28:38 > 0:28:42- At the ready.- Stand.- And moving.

0:28:42 > 0:28:44He's got a collared ewe on the end.

0:28:44 > 0:28:48Just trying to prise her off, but another ewe has blocked that path,

0:28:48 > 0:28:50so he's trying for the back two.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53Stand! Keep. Stand. Out.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57It's all about patience, this. Gus will have spent many a round

0:28:57 > 0:29:00commentating and finished up here in the shedding ring.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02But look at this, it's not going to happen.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04Stand! Stand! Stand!

0:29:04 > 0:29:06Stand! Stand! Stand! Stand! Look!

0:29:12 > 0:29:14Yes, the judges have accepted that one.

0:29:14 > 0:29:19It was difficult, he came in well. And it was a second challenge.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21He took that as well.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25- So the judges have accepted that single.- Stand. Out.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27HE WHISTLES

0:29:27 > 0:29:28Out.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31Putting them back into the shedding ring before he goes to the pen.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33Stand. Stand. Stand.

0:29:35 > 0:29:36Maximum points for the single.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41Well, this is tight. This is tight.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45He has got over three minutes, so he doesn't need to run that much,

0:29:45 > 0:29:47but you never know.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49The trial that we saw yesterday - my word!

0:29:49 > 0:29:51Stand!

0:29:51 > 0:29:53We've got an awkward ewe here.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56If he can just keep them steady, keep them bunched,

0:29:56 > 0:30:00- he should be able to get them in. - Stand.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02Stand!

0:30:04 > 0:30:07There's the rest of the Welsh team watching.

0:30:07 > 0:30:08Stand! Stand!

0:30:10 > 0:30:12Stand!

0:30:12 > 0:30:14They're looking. Are they going to go in?

0:30:15 > 0:30:20Now he's got a lot of experience.

0:30:20 > 0:30:21Stand.

0:30:23 > 0:30:24Stand.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26Stand!

0:30:28 > 0:30:31- Stand! - And the first two are going in.

0:30:31 > 0:30:33Looks like the others are going to follow.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37Oh, yes!

0:30:37 > 0:30:41- In they go! Last one. Don't push it in with the gate - that's it.- Stand.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43And in they go, and another good run.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46It's helping with the more sheep that there are to pen,

0:30:46 > 0:30:48because the first one will go in.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51There's more options of sheep that are willing to go into a small area.

0:30:51 > 0:30:54It is, and if you've got the first two in, and the others

0:30:54 > 0:30:58are following, there's every chance you'll get the rest of the bunch in.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01As long as they don't spread, and he kept them tight there.

0:31:01 > 0:31:07Well, all in all, a very, very nice round indeed for Kevin and Jimmy.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09And there's confirmation.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Look at that - not many points dropped at all.

0:31:11 > 0:31:16The first fetch there down to 14 and the second outrun 18.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19But apart from that, look at that. 29 out of 30 for the drive.

0:31:19 > 0:31:22Certainly one of the highest scores we've seen for the cross drive

0:31:22 > 0:31:24throughout this year's One Man And His Dog.

0:31:24 > 0:31:30So 141 out of 150 - just nine points dropped.

0:31:30 > 0:31:33I can't believe how well this is going!

0:31:33 > 0:31:36I don't want to speak too soon, but you must have been pleased with that, Kevin.

0:31:36 > 0:31:40Yeah, fairly pleased. I just missed some sheep on that fetch gate and a bit of trouble on the turn back,

0:31:40 > 0:31:44but apart from that, it went really well. Ian had put a lot of pressure on us with a great first run.

0:31:44 > 0:31:48He really did, didn't he? He dropped, what, four points?

0:31:48 > 0:31:51- Four it was, yeah.- He dropped four - do you want to know how many you got?

0:31:51 > 0:31:55- How many do you think? - I don't know.- Out of 150.- Maybe 138?

0:31:55 > 0:31:57- 141.- Oh, right. Good.- Incredible.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00You did have an incredible score to beat.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03But as a team, who knows where that's going to put you on the leaderboard?

0:32:04 > 0:32:09- Yeah.- That was absolutely fabulous. You were watching yesterday.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12I can't believe how different the sheep are today.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15Yeah. But they're not easy. They still challenge the dog.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18But Mo, especially there with the in work, tremendously well.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20She had a real bad shape, and if she was a little bit worse,

0:32:20 > 0:32:23- she'd have been in trouble.- I think you were very lucky here with Jimmy.

0:32:23 > 0:32:25- Jimmy didn't get any challenges at all.- No, no.

0:32:25 > 0:32:30And I think it's important to remind the audience that they are the same

0:32:30 > 0:32:33group of sheep, different sheep all the time that we do each round with.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35But sheep are clever - they soon suss out a dog.

0:32:35 > 0:32:37I think the rain has calmed them all down a bit.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40But well done. That is a fabulous score, 141.

0:32:40 > 0:32:46Ian got 146, which is a really high score, almost perfect round.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48Almost unbeatable. Yeah. It was a great round.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52- But I'd be very proud of that if I was you. Well done.- Thank you.

0:32:52 > 0:32:54As you see, Kevin was saying there that Ian,

0:32:54 > 0:32:57he really piled the pressure on to go out.

0:32:57 > 0:33:01- And it's a lonely place, that post, when you head out there.- Yes, it is.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03But you know, he's a cool person.

0:33:03 > 0:33:08To have changed his dog, and done such a good round,

0:33:08 > 0:33:09it was tremendous, it really was.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12You wonder how much it must affect you, going in thinking,

0:33:12 > 0:33:15"I'm going in with this dog," but actually change at the last minute.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19But Jimmy did incredibly well as the European Nursery champion,

0:33:19 > 0:33:23but this was really the only moment where things went a bit pear-shaped.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25Yes, yeah.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28And knowing that that had happened, where the three sheep

0:33:28 > 0:33:30got round the fetch gates, that can put a lot of people off.

0:33:30 > 0:33:34It could put an awful lot off, and they'll not try hard enough.

0:33:34 > 0:33:39But he kept going. Then on the cross drive, he went deep into the wood.

0:33:39 > 0:33:44He nearly, nearly went too far, but he covered, and the back sheep,

0:33:44 > 0:33:48the sheep over on the left all went through

0:33:48 > 0:33:50and so that was a good recovery on the drive.

0:33:52 > 0:33:56And then on to the shed. Straight through there. Look at that.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58We wondered whether or not...

0:33:58 > 0:34:00It is one of those moments where the other sheep have to stay

0:34:00 > 0:34:03within the circle as the other one shed of.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06It is a bit like the offside rule. You are thinking, were they all in?

0:34:06 > 0:34:07Or were they out at the time?

0:34:07 > 0:34:10And actually, the judges turned round and raised their hands,

0:34:10 > 0:34:13they said, absolutely no problem.

0:34:13 > 0:34:15He did it twice and he did it well.

0:34:15 > 0:34:19But when it came to the pen, he'd just got them all settled

0:34:19 > 0:34:22and they just walked in.

0:34:22 > 0:34:23As calm as you like.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25For all those out there who wonder

0:34:25 > 0:34:28whether and not the sheep are affected by any of this,

0:34:28 > 0:34:30you can see how relaxed they are

0:34:30 > 0:34:32after trotting round for the entire time

0:34:32 > 0:34:35and they are nice and relaxed in the pen.

0:34:35 > 0:34:40Well, it is all going remarkably well. Will it continue to do so?

0:34:40 > 0:34:43There's only one way to find out and that's to go to our next team,

0:34:43 > 0:34:44which is England.

0:34:44 > 0:34:49Representing England is someone who has been competing for 35 years,

0:34:49 > 0:34:54but at the age of 73, this is his first time on One Man And His Dog.

0:34:54 > 0:34:55It's Alf Kyme.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01My name is Alf Kyme.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04I come from Rossendale in Lancashire and in the competition,

0:35:04 > 0:35:05I will be running Sally.

0:35:06 > 0:35:09I had a scrapyard, skip hire business.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12I've now sold it and retired onto a smallholding.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17I have always had an interest in sheepdogs

0:35:17 > 0:35:21and I've always wanted to run at trials.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28Come-bye. Sally is nine years old.

0:35:28 > 0:35:29She's a right nice girl, a good listener.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32She is a good flanker, she's a good outrunner.

0:35:32 > 0:35:36And it tries its best for me and its personality is first class.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41I reared Sally from a pup.

0:35:41 > 0:35:44I have five pups on at the moment,

0:35:44 > 0:35:47I am hoping one of those will be outstanding.

0:35:47 > 0:35:52I'll keep that and Sally will be retiring this year.

0:35:52 > 0:35:59I keep a few hens, a few chickens for ourselves, eggs for ourselves.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03I like to keep black Leghorn hens. The eggs are really tasty.

0:36:03 > 0:36:06I like to unwind by having a game of snooker.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12It is not like sheepdog trialling.

0:36:12 > 0:36:13Sheepdog trialling, you have to move the sheep,

0:36:13 > 0:36:16it's you, the sheep and the dog.

0:36:16 > 0:36:22With snooker, if you make a mistake, it is your fault.

0:36:27 > 0:36:31So Alf Kyme, then, 73 years old, with his dog.

0:36:31 > 0:36:35- This is Moss, not Sally, as he was planning to run.- Keep back.

0:36:37 > 0:36:42I tell you what, Moss is of like a shot. Off to the right-hand side.

0:36:43 > 0:36:47Alf won the English National last year. Back in 2011.

0:36:49 > 0:36:52But Moss running well here, Gus.

0:36:52 > 0:36:54Yes, Moss, his replacement door,

0:36:54 > 0:36:58is a half-brother to the dog he should've been running.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02So there we go, down the field. I think Alf has every confidence.

0:37:02 > 0:37:04Maybe Alf himself gets a bit worried

0:37:04 > 0:37:07about how things are going to happen,

0:37:07 > 0:37:12but we will see who keeps settled now - the dog, Alf or the sheep?

0:37:14 > 0:37:15That is a good start.

0:37:18 > 0:37:25Just passing head of sheep, Malcolm, keeping still at the bottom.

0:37:26 > 0:37:30Just a reminder that England were just one point

0:37:30 > 0:37:33behind Ireland after yesterday's competition.

0:37:33 > 0:37:36The Young Handlers and the Brace.

0:37:36 > 0:37:42So competition is really, really on between England and Ireland.

0:37:45 > 0:37:50- Little bit of zig-zagging. - Yes, he has gone from left to right.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53He needs to get these sheep into the centre.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04And they're now on the correct line,

0:38:06 > 0:38:09coming through the first set of fetch gates.

0:38:09 > 0:38:12Every time the sheep stop, they look round at the dog

0:38:12 > 0:38:15and the dog has to assert its authority

0:38:15 > 0:38:18and walk calmly up to these sheep.

0:38:18 > 0:38:19And then they will back off.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22If the dog doesn't assert that authority,

0:38:22 > 0:38:24then the sheep really will challenge.

0:38:24 > 0:38:28They are looking at the dog again now.

0:38:28 > 0:38:31So he has to walk on towards them and not bend off to the left.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34Through the middle of the gates.

0:38:34 > 0:38:36And coming now towards the white post.

0:38:39 > 0:38:4519/20 for the first outrun. 8/10 for that lift.

0:38:45 > 0:38:50And now they have arrived at the post,

0:38:50 > 0:38:53you will see Moss spin round and look for the sheep

0:38:53 > 0:38:54that are behind there.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59This is looking good.

0:39:00 > 0:39:04He brought him round to the right then asked him to look back,

0:39:04 > 0:39:07which he did, and then sent him off to the left.

0:39:08 > 0:39:12And he is giving room, coming round and covering the sheep.

0:39:12 > 0:39:1518/20, two points lost on that first fetch,

0:39:15 > 0:39:19that transfer of the sheep from the top white post,

0:39:19 > 0:39:22to the middle white post, and these ones are going! Look at the speed!

0:39:22 > 0:39:25I think it is because they can see the first group of sheep.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28The first group of sheep are bending over to the right by the wood.

0:39:28 > 0:39:33This is going to be difficult for Alf to keep that second group

0:39:33 > 0:39:37now that he has got to keep them on line through those fetch gates.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39They bend, they are pulling hard to the right,

0:39:39 > 0:39:42is it going to miss with all five?

0:39:42 > 0:39:44Yes, unfortunately - that's because those sheep

0:39:44 > 0:39:46are trying to chase after the first group.

0:39:52 > 0:39:54Wales now in with a really good shout

0:39:54 > 0:39:58because there wasn't that many points between England and Wales

0:39:58 > 0:40:00going into this round. They were down in third.

0:40:06 > 0:40:1218/20, that second outrun, 9/10 for the second lift.

0:40:12 > 0:40:16But this second fetch is going to be very costly.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19It is, unfortunately. That is just the luck of the draw.

0:40:19 > 0:40:22The sheep didn't keep still when he sent them back.

0:40:22 > 0:40:26Wales, Kevin Evans watching what is going on. Our last competitor.

0:40:26 > 0:40:29But they are just coming online now,

0:40:29 > 0:40:33so there won't be many points available for this second fetch.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50Well, he's got them online and the drive is going good.

0:40:53 > 0:40:56Second fetch. 12/20.

0:40:59 > 0:41:02It'll be very, very interesting to see what happens between England

0:41:02 > 0:41:06and Wales off the back of this as far as the standings are concerned.

0:41:11 > 0:41:15He needs to push these down a bit harder. He's done it.

0:41:17 > 0:41:21Starting to go towards the sheep, but they're all turned now.

0:41:25 > 0:41:29And he's starting, now, on the cross drive itself.

0:41:29 > 0:41:32Hoping that the sheep won't go too fast down the slight dip

0:41:32 > 0:41:33and then towards the rise

0:41:33 > 0:41:36and that they won't come too far up towards him.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41Because he's got to squeeze them through between the wood

0:41:41 > 0:41:44and the second drive gates.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49England and Wales looking on.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54HE WHISTLES

0:41:56 > 0:41:59Well, the pace is right.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02The collared ewe leading the way at the moment.

0:42:02 > 0:42:08He's go to be ready for this very quick left-hand turn

0:42:08 > 0:42:13to turn the sheep in. Alf whistling, not using a plastic whistle.

0:42:13 > 0:42:17The sheep are into the trees a little bit deep now.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19Don't turn them too soon, Moss.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23He has come back. There's been a stop.

0:42:23 > 0:42:27It's not in a good spot, this, with the trees surrounding the sheep.

0:42:28 > 0:42:32But they're moving again. Now he's giving the left whistle to him.

0:42:32 > 0:42:36Asking him... Oh, that's unfortunate.

0:42:36 > 0:42:41- Well, I don't know about the pen... - Oh, and he's headed them as well.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43..but the gate is open for Wales now.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49Well, he used whistle commands and then he used his voice command

0:42:49 > 0:42:52to try and speed Moss up to get him faster around this left turn

0:42:52 > 0:42:57but it didn't work and so all the sheep have missed the gate.

0:43:00 > 0:43:03And now they're coming back towards the shedding ring.

0:43:03 > 0:43:06Well, again, that'll be disappointing there.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08There will be a lot of points knocked off the drive.

0:43:09 > 0:43:11Moss, Moss, Moss. Lie down.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13So, on to the single.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17Just one with the red collar away from the group of ten.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20That's the idea. Patience is the key here.

0:43:22 > 0:43:26This, replicating a lot of the work that goes on in sheep farms.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29If you've got a sheep with a bad foot or something like that,

0:43:29 > 0:43:32that's why you would single that off.

0:43:36 > 0:43:37HE WHISTLES

0:43:37 > 0:43:40Come on, come on.

0:43:40 > 0:43:44Well, there was an opportunity there.

0:43:44 > 0:43:4615 out of 30 for the cross drive.

0:43:46 > 0:43:49Lie down. Lie down.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54Lie down. Lie down.

0:43:55 > 0:43:57Lie down. Lie down.

0:43:57 > 0:43:59Lie down. Stand there.

0:43:59 > 0:44:03So there's ten points available for the single itself.

0:44:03 > 0:44:06There was an opportunity. It wasn't taken

0:44:06 > 0:44:09and the net result was that all the sheep got out of the shedding ring

0:44:09 > 0:44:11so points will be lost.

0:44:11 > 0:44:15Sometimes it can be half a point or even a quarter of a point

0:44:15 > 0:44:16per sheep that goes out

0:44:16 > 0:44:21so he could have lost most of his available points for the single.

0:44:21 > 0:44:24But the collared ewes are in the middle

0:44:24 > 0:44:28so he's got to keep working them until he gets one onto the end.

0:44:29 > 0:44:31Stand there.

0:44:31 > 0:44:32Stand there.

0:44:32 > 0:44:34He's done just that now.

0:44:38 > 0:44:40Just moving gently round.

0:44:40 > 0:44:44Moss absolutely standing still until he gets the command.

0:44:44 > 0:44:47They were just out then.

0:44:47 > 0:44:49Lie down. Lie down.

0:44:49 > 0:44:51And the clock will be ticking away.

0:44:55 > 0:44:5712 minutes is the time that's allowed for this round.

0:44:58 > 0:45:00Lie down. Lie down.

0:45:00 > 0:45:03Well, England in real trouble here

0:45:03 > 0:45:07but this looks like a good, good single.

0:45:07 > 0:45:11Lie down. Lie down. Look back.

0:45:11 > 0:45:13Lie down.

0:45:13 > 0:45:16So he regroups the sheep.

0:45:16 > 0:45:19And now he is to put them into the pen.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21Lie down.

0:45:25 > 0:45:29It'll be interesting to see what the judges give for this single,

0:45:29 > 0:45:33because there were quite a few errors in the ring itself.

0:45:37 > 0:45:40He's got three minutes to put them in the pen.

0:45:40 > 0:45:42So he's plenty of time.

0:45:42 > 0:45:45Lie down.

0:45:45 > 0:45:47So, five out of ten.

0:45:47 > 0:45:50Lie down. Lie down. In here.

0:45:50 > 0:45:54Well, that's not too bad, actually. Not too bad.

0:45:54 > 0:45:57Makes you wonder what's going to happen with Ireland.

0:45:57 > 0:46:01- There is only a point in it between England and Ireland.- Oh, my word.

0:46:01 > 0:46:04Come-bye.

0:46:04 > 0:46:06And the sheep are turning onto the dog.

0:46:06 > 0:46:08Lie down. Come-bye.

0:46:08 > 0:46:10Lie down. Lie down.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12Lie down. In here. Get back.

0:46:12 > 0:46:15Lie down. Get back.

0:46:15 > 0:46:17Lie down. Lie down.

0:46:17 > 0:46:19Lie down.

0:46:19 > 0:46:21Lie down.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24Just trying to get them all to look in.

0:46:24 > 0:46:27It was interesting how, the previous two pens,

0:46:27 > 0:46:29all the sheep have looked in right from the edge

0:46:29 > 0:46:32of the shedding ring right to the pen

0:46:32 > 0:46:36but these are being rather stroppy. There's a little bit of milling.

0:46:36 > 0:46:38Lie down.

0:46:38 > 0:46:41Two minutes in time so he's got plenty of time but...

0:46:41 > 0:46:44Lie down.

0:46:44 > 0:46:47Lie down. Lie down.

0:46:47 > 0:46:50They're going on outside, they're going to go over.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52Oh, dear, oh, dear.

0:46:52 > 0:46:56He's having such a... It's like a real sticky round, isn't it?

0:46:56 > 0:46:59I mean, he's really, really struggling.

0:46:59 > 0:47:02Yes, he is, but he's a good dog.

0:47:02 > 0:47:04This dog is a good dog

0:47:04 > 0:47:08and it just shows you how things can alter from one round to another.

0:47:08 > 0:47:09Yeah.

0:47:09 > 0:47:14Lie down. Lie down. Lie down.

0:47:14 > 0:47:17In here. Get back. Lie down.

0:47:17 > 0:47:21The dog is quite calm, but it's a combination of the handler

0:47:21 > 0:47:26and the dog and things are just not going quite right for Alf.

0:47:26 > 0:47:28Oh, and another breakaway.

0:47:28 > 0:47:31That's the thing, I mean, there's so many elements involved.

0:47:31 > 0:47:34You get a round, you know, that goes so smoothly and you go,

0:47:34 > 0:47:36"Oh, wow, it's so easy. Look how simple that is,"

0:47:36 > 0:47:40and then, suddenly, you just throw in a rogue sheep

0:47:40 > 0:47:42or sometimes the style of the dog

0:47:42 > 0:47:44in comparison to the style of the sheep doesn't work out.

0:47:44 > 0:47:47Lie down.

0:47:47 > 0:47:48Come-bye.

0:47:48 > 0:47:51Now they are all facing the dog.

0:47:51 > 0:47:53We've got to get them all turning towards the pen

0:47:53 > 0:47:55and there's only 45 seconds left.

0:47:55 > 0:47:57Come-bye. Lie down.

0:47:57 > 0:47:58Oh, dear.

0:47:58 > 0:48:02You know, that time Moss did go that little bit hard onto the sheep.

0:48:05 > 0:48:06And so there was a burst.

0:48:06 > 0:48:11As you can see now there is 26 seconds to go.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14Lie down.

0:48:14 > 0:48:16Lie down.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18Alf will be getting quite anxious here.

0:48:20 > 0:48:23Lie down. Come-bye. Come-bye. Come-bye.

0:48:24 > 0:48:27I think he's in dead trouble now.

0:48:27 > 0:48:29Less than 10 seconds.

0:48:30 > 0:48:32Will they all rush in now? Will they?

0:48:32 > 0:48:35- It looks like a few are going. - Some are going in.

0:48:35 > 0:48:40It's getting near to time. Oh, no, that's done it.

0:48:40 > 0:48:41Time up!

0:48:41 > 0:48:44- Time is up. - Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear.

0:48:44 > 0:48:48How disappointing for Alf and Moss for England.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51They struggled, they got round and at least

0:48:51 > 0:48:53they finished with some in the pen, Gus.

0:48:53 > 0:48:55They did, but unfortunately you've got to have

0:48:55 > 0:48:58all ten in to get it to count. What a shame.

0:48:58 > 0:49:02Well, we said it was a sticky round.

0:49:04 > 0:49:07Let's have a look at confirmation of the scores

0:49:07 > 0:49:10Obviously not what Alf would have wanted.

0:49:10 > 0:49:13No points for the pen

0:49:13 > 0:49:14and all the way through

0:49:14 > 0:49:17it was just a story of what could have been.

0:49:17 > 0:49:21But that, let me tell you, does some very drastic things

0:49:21 > 0:49:24to our leaderboard as far as the countries are concerned.

0:49:24 > 0:49:28So England will be behind Wales and Scotland.

0:49:29 > 0:49:33Alf, I feel I have an apology to make. I think it's my fault.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36I jinxed you because I said it was all going so smoothly

0:49:36 > 0:49:38and then, oh, dear, oh, dear me.

0:49:38 > 0:49:41What happened is the second lot of sheep...

0:49:41 > 0:49:43The first lot of sheep had moved over

0:49:43 > 0:49:46and the second lot of sheep pulled over to them

0:49:46 > 0:49:48and just upset everything and everything went wrong then.

0:49:48 > 0:49:49And is that what happens,

0:49:49 > 0:49:52because they were all spooked and he ran to the wrong end?

0:49:52 > 0:49:56All the other sheep had stopped mainly in front of the fetch gates.

0:49:56 > 0:49:58But them sheep of mine have run over that side

0:49:58 > 0:50:00so I had to flank my dog over quickly

0:50:00 > 0:50:04and it upset these sheep and everything went wrong then.

0:50:04 > 0:50:06And what about the end?

0:50:06 > 0:50:09We were willing you to get them in their pen in the time.

0:50:09 > 0:50:13Just one bad sheep there that just kept running off,

0:50:13 > 0:50:17so it's one of them things, you can't win every time.

0:50:17 > 0:50:19Alf, it can't have been easy going into that,

0:50:19 > 0:50:22knowing how good the two scores were before you.

0:50:22 > 0:50:23That's right, yeah, yeah.

0:50:23 > 0:50:25- Yeah, they were two good runs, weren't they?- Yeah.

0:50:25 > 0:50:29Full points of play to win it and that's how it goes, anyway.

0:50:29 > 0:50:30You know what?

0:50:30 > 0:50:32It would've been boring if everyone had been that brilliant.

0:50:32 > 0:50:35- Yeah.- Not that that's any consolation for you.

0:50:35 > 0:50:38My dog run well anyway. If it was anybody's fault it was my own,

0:50:38 > 0:50:42you know, but, as I say, the first lot of sheep run off

0:50:42 > 0:50:44and it pulled the second lot of sheep to

0:50:44 > 0:50:47and stopped under the trees. So, that's how it goes.

0:50:47 > 0:50:49I'll tell you what I love about you guys, though, is you're all,

0:50:49 > 0:50:53"Well, it didn't go so well this time but next time it'll go better."

0:50:53 > 0:50:57- Well, that's it.- Well, thanks very much for competing.- OK. Thank you.

0:50:57 > 0:50:59I guess it's just a shame that it happens on telly, Gus.

0:50:59 > 0:51:01Because you can go out in one trial

0:51:01 > 0:51:04and it goes absolutely beautiful for you and then you turn up

0:51:04 > 0:51:06the next day and it's a story as if

0:51:06 > 0:51:08you've never been on a trial field before.

0:51:08 > 0:51:11Yes, it's as if they were different sheep, really. But they weren't.

0:51:11 > 0:51:13It's just how they can react, yes.

0:51:13 > 0:51:17Well, a chance to just have a look at some of the moments

0:51:17 > 0:51:18from poor Alf's round.

0:51:18 > 0:51:21Well, the sheep got stuck in the woods, didn't they, really?

0:51:21 > 0:51:24Yeah, there was trouble there

0:51:24 > 0:51:28and he couldn't get the dog around fast enough so all ten sheep missed

0:51:28 > 0:51:32the second drive gate so a lot of points went tumbling off there.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34He managed to recover.

0:51:34 > 0:51:38You can see the dog comes all the way round in that come-bye direction

0:51:38 > 0:51:41and then manages, tries to recover a little bit.

0:51:41 > 0:51:45One sheep goes through but it just wasn't counted at the end, was it?

0:51:45 > 0:51:50No, he couldn't recover. He couldn't get that gate at all.

0:51:50 > 0:51:54In the shedding ring, he had the opportunity to take a ewe

0:51:54 > 0:51:57but unfortunately they got together,

0:51:57 > 0:52:00they all went out of the shedding ring

0:52:00 > 0:52:03and a lot of points lost there.

0:52:03 > 0:52:07This was, of course, this was an impressive single, when it came.

0:52:07 > 0:52:10That's how it should be done. Yes. The dog came through

0:52:10 > 0:52:14and there was no way that that sheep was going to get back.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17We had a bit of sheep jumping yesterday.

0:52:17 > 0:52:20One over the rope in the pen and another to jump back into the pen.

0:52:20 > 0:52:22We wondered if any of it would happen again today

0:52:22 > 0:52:26and she was keen to show off her prowess in the high jump as well.

0:52:26 > 0:52:28Yes, back to line dancing again.

0:52:28 > 0:52:32- But, of course, the clock was ticking by, wasn't it?- Yeah.

0:52:32 > 0:52:34And it's always hard, obviously,

0:52:34 > 0:52:36when you get some of the sheep in the pen,

0:52:36 > 0:52:39the others are then looking for an entrance, wandering round.

0:52:39 > 0:52:42Then they feel pressure from the dog and they're not keen to go back in.

0:52:42 > 0:52:46They're certainly not, no, and the trouble was then,

0:52:46 > 0:52:48eventually, that Alf was to run out of time.

0:52:51 > 0:52:53Well, a disappointing round for Alf,

0:52:53 > 0:52:57preceded by really amazing rounds from both Ian and Kevin.

0:52:57 > 0:53:00Let's see how our final country will do. Which is Ireland.

0:53:00 > 0:53:03And representing Ireland is someone who's always seen

0:53:03 > 0:53:04trialling as a hobby.

0:53:04 > 0:53:08It also his first time on One Man And His Dog. Let's meet him.

0:53:08 > 0:53:10It's Bobby Reid with his dog Chief.

0:53:17 > 0:53:20'I'm Bobby Reid from Castlederg, County Tyrone.'

0:53:21 > 0:53:24'I'm going to run Chief in this year's competition.'

0:53:25 > 0:53:27I'm living here now 20 years

0:53:27 > 0:53:31with my wife and family with a smallholding.

0:53:31 > 0:53:32A very nice place to live.

0:53:32 > 0:53:35Good valleys and hills and very good ground for grazing.

0:53:35 > 0:53:38MUSIC: "Buckets of Rain" by Bob Dylan # Buckets of rain, buckets of tears

0:53:38 > 0:53:41# Got all them buckets coming out of my ears

0:53:41 > 0:53:44# Buckets of moonbeams in my hand. #

0:53:44 > 0:53:46The weather's got so much worse here now,

0:53:46 > 0:53:48'I don't know if it's global warming or not

0:53:48 > 0:53:52'but it takes you longer doing a bit of work.'

0:53:52 > 0:53:55When you go out to do it you can't get it done with that much rain.

0:53:56 > 0:54:00'I started off trialling and I learned it all myself.

0:54:00 > 0:54:02'I bought a young dog.

0:54:02 > 0:54:04'He was 15 months when I bought him.

0:54:04 > 0:54:06'I trained him and I just kept in

0:54:06 > 0:54:08'until I got what I thought was the right one.'

0:54:08 > 0:54:13Chief is five years old now, coming. He is a good dog working with sheep.

0:54:13 > 0:54:17He has plenty of power and he's easy handled.

0:54:17 > 0:54:19He helps you in every way he can.

0:54:20 > 0:54:25This is the first time for me to be on One Man And His Dog.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28I'm excited and I'm going to give it my best shot.

0:54:34 > 0:54:40Bobby and Chief, the last team to go in this year's One Man And His Dog.

0:54:40 > 0:54:45The score he needs for Ireland to win is 134.

0:54:46 > 0:54:52It's very doable when you consider that we had 146, 141.

0:54:53 > 0:54:55HE WHISTLES

0:54:58 > 0:55:01And he's a good, consistent dog. He's been in the Irish team

0:55:01 > 0:55:05and got through to the International two years on the trot.

0:55:05 > 0:55:08Dog's just coming in, looked as if he was coming in a little bit

0:55:08 > 0:55:09as he went down the field.

0:55:09 > 0:55:11Whether he's opened out behind the wood.

0:55:11 > 0:55:15He is, he's going out to the outer fence so that's the better line now.

0:55:15 > 0:55:18So, he's well down the field now,

0:55:18 > 0:55:21going towards the five fresh sheep at the bottom of the field.

0:55:21 > 0:55:23WHISTLE BLOWS

0:55:23 > 0:55:25There's the whistle. It's the end of the outrun.

0:55:25 > 0:55:27By Jove, did he put the brakes on then?

0:55:28 > 0:55:32And that is the 'Get on' command as the dog comes towards the sheep.

0:55:32 > 0:55:36That's nice. That's good.

0:55:36 > 0:55:40- Just looking for a nice, gentle lift. - Now, who's going to win?

0:55:43 > 0:55:45And it's Chief.

0:55:47 > 0:55:53Now that is a good lift. So, a very, very good start for Bobby and Chief.

0:55:53 > 0:55:56Just a little bit sharp there as he came round.

0:55:56 > 0:55:57He'll have to just be careful.

0:55:57 > 0:56:01These sheep seem to spin onto a dog that does

0:56:01 > 0:56:03a very quick movement at the back so...

0:56:05 > 0:56:06Maximum score so far.

0:56:06 > 0:56:1020 out of 20 for the outrun, 10 out of 10 for that lift.

0:56:10 > 0:56:14- That's brilliant. - Look at the intent.

0:56:14 > 0:56:18These sheep are coming up the field.

0:56:18 > 0:56:22- Oops-a-daisy.- A bit of a bend.

0:56:26 > 0:56:30He's just that little bit sharp on some of his movements.

0:56:30 > 0:56:34It might upset this breed of sheep but we'll see.

0:56:34 > 0:56:37See how they just quickly move away from him.

0:56:38 > 0:56:39He was steady on the lift,

0:56:39 > 0:56:41but he's a little bit flirty coming down the field.

0:56:44 > 0:56:49So, the first set of five sheep just approaching that white post

0:56:49 > 0:56:51and as soon as they do, Chief will look back.

0:56:53 > 0:56:56Here we go. Let's have a look. See if he reacts. He's having a look.

0:56:56 > 0:57:00It's the second, third request.

0:57:00 > 0:57:04He's asking him again.

0:57:05 > 0:57:07Well, the first fetch score is in.

0:57:07 > 0:57:09But, 17 out of 20.

0:57:09 > 0:57:11A little bit of confusion here between dog and handler.

0:57:14 > 0:57:18He's in dead trouble here, because the dog wouldn't go back.

0:57:18 > 0:57:21And is it crossing? It's crossed. Oh, dear.

0:57:21 > 0:57:25So it could well be that he'll lose most of his second fetch.

0:57:28 > 0:57:31134 is the score that he needs.

0:57:31 > 0:57:34He's lost a lot of points there.

0:57:34 > 0:57:37And his second lot of sheep are going over towards the wood,

0:57:37 > 0:57:41so he's got problems, serious problems here.

0:57:42 > 0:57:44He's keeping calm.

0:57:44 > 0:57:47Now will those... That group that he's got now,

0:57:47 > 0:57:49are they going to pull like mad

0:57:49 > 0:57:51to the first group and try and get through the wood?

0:57:52 > 0:57:57You can see Sam, Malcolm's dog there, that she'd just passed,

0:57:57 > 0:58:00just holding the sheep in position at the top of the field.

0:58:00 > 0:58:01They're not helping at all.

0:58:01 > 0:58:04He's keeping them on a good line, but they're starting to run now.

0:58:04 > 0:58:07They're going to go after these other sheep.

0:58:07 > 0:58:09Will he be able to get his fetch gates?

0:58:09 > 0:58:12Because they'll really be pulling hard to our right.

0:58:12 > 0:58:13It'll be tight, this.

0:58:15 > 0:58:17Expect a low score for the second outrun.

0:58:17 > 0:58:19Yes, 1 out of 20.

0:58:19 > 0:58:22And 7 out of 10 for the second lift.

0:58:22 > 0:58:25Wow. Drastic, drastic.

0:58:25 > 0:58:27Yes, and it could be a miss coming up here,

0:58:27 > 0:58:29or are they going to flirt right the way across

0:58:29 > 0:58:31and off the other side?

0:58:31 > 0:58:33Two missed, three through.

0:58:33 > 0:58:35He's got real problems,

0:58:35 > 0:58:38because those sheep are desperate to get to that other group

0:58:38 > 0:58:40that they'd seen before.

0:58:40 > 0:58:43Now he's got to allow them to go across and also send Chief

0:58:43 > 0:58:46very hard round to his left and our right

0:58:46 > 0:58:48to cover both lots of sheep.

0:58:50 > 0:58:51He's still not done it yet.

0:58:52 > 0:58:54So the sheep are well off line.

0:58:56 > 0:58:58The dog's just round now.

0:59:02 > 0:59:05So the sheep are looking a little bit stressed now.

0:59:05 > 0:59:09Yes, yes, and they were so far off line,

0:59:09 > 0:59:12he's in dead trouble, really.

0:59:13 > 0:59:15But he's keeping calm.

0:59:19 > 0:59:20And they're all together now,

0:59:20 > 0:59:23and they're thinking of challenging the dog.

0:59:25 > 0:59:27Well, all the Welsh team are looking on

0:59:27 > 0:59:31and wondering how they're going to be faring now.

0:59:31 > 0:59:34But that was a good turn around the handler's post.

0:59:36 > 0:59:39That's it, yeah. Wales now in second place.

0:59:45 > 0:59:49So maybe just a moment there to let the sheep calm, settle,

0:59:49 > 0:59:53collect themselves before they head off on this cross drive.

0:59:54 > 0:59:56They do look a little bit panicked.

0:59:56 > 0:59:58They look very keen to go right and up the bank,

0:59:58 > 1:00:02but they're heading towards those cross drive gates

1:00:02 > 1:00:03at quite a lick.

1:00:04 > 1:00:0810 out of 20, that second fetch.

1:00:13 > 1:00:15I'll tell you what, Gus, looking at these scores,

1:00:15 > 1:00:17I'm not sure he can do this. I think Wales will have it.

1:00:21 > 1:00:23Nicely through the drive gates.

1:00:25 > 1:00:29And they're starting to gain speed now as they go on the cross drive.

1:00:33 > 1:00:37They don't know, but they are the champions.

1:00:37 > 1:00:38Lie down.

1:00:39 > 1:00:41He'll still keep trying,

1:00:41 > 1:00:44but they're going fast towards this second drive gate.

1:00:44 > 1:00:47Are they going to go shooting past round the back?

1:00:47 > 1:00:51He's got to ask him very hard left now, fast as he can.

1:00:51 > 1:00:57- Oh, it's too much.- He hasn't... No, he hasn't got the room to do it.

1:00:57 > 1:01:01The sheep are travelling too fast, and unfortunately, a bad miss.

1:01:01 > 1:01:04All ten sheep missing the second drive.

1:01:04 > 1:01:08He might rescue something, but I think the line was crossed.

1:01:11 > 1:01:13I don't think the judges will give him anything,

1:01:13 > 1:01:16even if he does get the gates.

1:01:19 > 1:01:22We'll have to have a look at that in analysis, Gus.

1:01:22 > 1:01:24Yes, yes.

1:01:26 > 1:01:27Steady.

1:01:28 > 1:01:33And now, on their way back to the shedding ring.

1:01:34 > 1:01:38He can go to the ring and start to meet the sheep.

1:01:38 > 1:01:42He can't go in it until the first sheep enter the shedding ring.

1:01:44 > 1:01:47And there they go, so in he goes to meet them.

1:01:52 > 1:01:54They've been an odd bunch.

1:01:54 > 1:01:57Let's see how they fare here in the shedding ring.

1:01:57 > 1:01:59Just looking for one of the sheep with the red collars.

1:02:00 > 1:02:04Come-bye. Come-bye. Lie down.

1:02:04 > 1:02:07Come on, Bobby, I hope it goes well for you.

1:02:09 > 1:02:1213 out of 30 for the cross drive.

1:02:12 > 1:02:16Well, yes, to be expected with that bad miss, unfortunately.

1:02:16 > 1:02:19But now he's got to concentrate on this single.

1:02:19 > 1:02:23He's got one on the right, one in the centre,

1:02:23 > 1:02:25and now he did have one on the left,

1:02:25 > 1:02:28but a ewe has plonked herself around,

1:02:28 > 1:02:30stopping him getting that single ewe.

1:02:30 > 1:02:35It was interesting, Kevin Evans for Wales took the very back ewe.

1:02:36 > 1:02:38- Lie down. - He can actually go for a ewe,

1:02:38 > 1:02:41- whether she's on the front or the back.- Lie down.

1:02:42 > 1:02:45The English team all watching on.

1:02:48 > 1:02:50Come-bye. Come-bye.

1:02:50 > 1:02:52Come-bye. Come-bye.

1:02:52 > 1:02:54Lie down. Lie down. Lie down.

1:02:54 > 1:02:56Walk up.

1:02:56 > 1:02:58Well, he's plenty of time, he's four minutes to do it,

1:02:58 > 1:03:00but it's yet to be done,

1:03:00 > 1:03:03so can he prise this one away from the other nine?

1:03:03 > 1:03:06- Here's a chance. No.- Lie down.

1:03:07 > 1:03:09They're spinning fairly fast.

1:03:09 > 1:03:12- Lie down.- They're getting a little bit worked up here.

1:03:12 > 1:03:15He's got one right on this left-hand side,

1:03:15 > 1:03:18which I think he's going to work towards.

1:03:18 > 1:03:21Oh, no, she's just chucked herself back in again.

1:03:21 > 1:03:24It's amazing how the collared ewes always end up in the middle.

1:03:24 > 1:03:27They seem to sense that you're after them,

1:03:27 > 1:03:29and they tuck themselves into the others.

1:03:29 > 1:03:32Lie down. Wait. Lie down.

1:03:32 > 1:03:34He's got one on the far end now.

1:03:34 > 1:03:35Two on the back.

1:03:39 > 1:03:41- There she is.- Wait. Lie down.

1:03:41 > 1:03:44Can he get her away? It's looking good.

1:03:44 > 1:03:46No, no. Not yet.

1:03:46 > 1:03:48Lie down.

1:03:48 > 1:03:50They're just not settled.

1:03:50 > 1:03:52I think the dog could work a little bit further away.

1:03:52 > 1:03:55Chief's just that little bit sharp round the shedding ring,

1:03:55 > 1:03:58like he was at the start of the fetch.

1:03:58 > 1:03:59He's got one at the front now.

1:03:59 > 1:04:03She's just having a nibble of grass, and if he can catch her unawares...

1:04:03 > 1:04:05Yes, that would be it, really.

1:04:09 > 1:04:13Nope, she's just being blocked by the other one, and she'll spin round.

1:04:15 > 1:04:16Let herself back in.

1:04:16 > 1:04:19Wait. Lie down.

1:04:19 > 1:04:21Lie down. Keep out.

1:04:21 > 1:04:24- No, they're getting jittery. - Lie down. Lie down.

1:04:24 > 1:04:25They just won't settle.

1:04:28 > 1:04:30Here we go. We've got one right at the front there now.

1:04:30 > 1:04:33Well, I wonder what the Welsh team were thinking then.

1:04:33 > 1:04:36They must know that they're in with a chance now.

1:04:36 > 1:04:37Lie down!

1:04:37 > 1:04:39Now then, the dog's a fair distance away.

1:04:41 > 1:04:44Bobby will take his time and do what he can

1:04:44 > 1:04:48to just get one of these on to the corner.

1:04:50 > 1:04:52The sheep are that little bit more settled.

1:04:52 > 1:04:54Lie down.

1:04:54 > 1:04:57- The dog's that bit further away. - Just helping with the crook.

1:04:57 > 1:05:00Such a wonderful tool. There you are, you can see...this is it.

1:05:00 > 1:05:03Ooh. You get all sorts of crooks.

1:05:03 > 1:05:05You get neck crooks and leg crooks

1:05:05 > 1:05:08so that when you do end up in a situation like this or in a pen,

1:05:08 > 1:05:11you can just pop that around the neck and pull it towards you,

1:05:11 > 1:05:13or for that matter, their leg,

1:05:13 > 1:05:16if it's a smaller little hook at the end.

1:05:16 > 1:05:18- Come. Come.- Here we go.

1:05:18 > 1:05:21Now they're very close to the edge of the ring,

1:05:21 > 1:05:23so he's had to move the dog.

1:05:23 > 1:05:26The sheep have got to keep within this sawdust ring.

1:05:30 > 1:05:35And only just about one minute, 20 seconds left, so he's in trouble.

1:05:35 > 1:05:38Here's a chance coming for the single,

1:05:38 > 1:05:41but really, he wants about three to four minutes, really,

1:05:41 > 1:05:44to get this done and the sheep into the pen,

1:05:44 > 1:05:47so it's not looking good for Ireland.

1:05:48 > 1:05:51Interestingly, on the subject of crooks,

1:05:51 > 1:05:55during the Olympics, I learnt that hockey gets its name from

1:05:55 > 1:05:57- the French word for hook.- Oh!

1:05:57 > 1:06:01And it comes from all the shepherds that used to play with their hooks.

1:06:01 > 1:06:04- Oh! We live and learn.- There you go.

1:06:09 > 1:06:12- There we go. That's good. - And here we are, here we are.

1:06:12 > 1:06:14Stand. Stand. Stand.

1:06:14 > 1:06:15Away. Away. Away.

1:06:15 > 1:06:17Well, he's been accepted, but he's only got about half a minute.

1:06:17 > 1:06:23He's only got somewhere near half a minute to get them in.

1:06:23 > 1:06:24Lie down!

1:06:24 > 1:06:26Well, Bobby needs to really get a lick on here, look.

1:06:26 > 1:06:3027...6...5 seconds to go.

1:06:33 > 1:06:34Lie down.

1:06:39 > 1:06:42So there are the champions.

1:06:42 > 1:06:44I'm sure they know it by now.

1:06:44 > 1:06:47Well, we're onto the final eight...

1:06:47 > 1:06:48- seven seconds.- Lie down.

1:06:48 > 1:06:50Five.

1:06:50 > 1:06:52Come-bye.

1:06:52 > 1:06:54It's not looking good.

1:06:54 > 1:06:58- Oh, dear, oh, dear. Time.- Time up!

1:06:59 > 1:07:04Time indeed. Oh, I bet it felt like forever for Bobby to be out there,

1:07:04 > 1:07:06- especially in that shedding ring. - I bet it did.

1:07:06 > 1:07:10I bet it did. And yet he still smiled at the end.

1:07:10 > 1:07:11It was amazing.

1:07:11 > 1:07:15I just looked at his face as the shout of "time" came.

1:07:15 > 1:07:16Yeah, you do wonder.

1:07:16 > 1:07:21I mean, as he headed out to the post as he thought, "134, this is doable.

1:07:21 > 1:07:23"There's been a couple of 140-odds"?

1:07:23 > 1:07:26But it wasn't to be in the end, was it, Gus, for Bobby and Chief?

1:07:26 > 1:07:29It certainly wasn't, no. No. What a shame.

1:07:29 > 1:07:32And there's confirmation of their scores.

1:07:32 > 1:07:36The second outrun, that's where it really started to go, wasn't it?

1:07:36 > 1:07:381 out of 20, and then there,

1:07:38 > 1:07:39the second lift,

1:07:39 > 1:07:41and slowly, slowly,

1:07:41 > 1:07:42things just started to drip away.

1:07:42 > 1:07:45But a score of 86 out of 150.

1:07:50 > 1:07:53Bobby, it all went a bit wrong right from the start, didn't it?

1:07:53 > 1:07:54- The first outrun went well.- Yes.

1:07:54 > 1:07:58And then the second outrun is where things really started to go wrong.

1:07:58 > 1:08:00- That's right.- How do you feel?

1:08:00 > 1:08:03Oh, all right. Just a wee bit unlucky.

1:08:03 > 1:08:06Don't suppose that's the best round you've ever done, is it?

1:08:06 > 1:08:07Oh, no, it's not the best, no.

1:08:07 > 1:08:09Because I think that's where you lost a lot of points,

1:08:09 > 1:08:12on the second outrun, because the dog didn't seem

1:08:12 > 1:08:13to listen to what you were telling him to do.

1:08:13 > 1:08:16- That's right.- He wanted to keep his eye on that first set of sheep.

1:08:16 > 1:08:19- Yes, that's right.- And you had the same problem as Alf,

1:08:19 > 1:08:21where that first set of sheep started drifting.

1:08:21 > 1:08:23Is there anything you or the dog could have done

1:08:23 > 1:08:25to stop that happening, or is it just one of those things?

1:08:25 > 1:08:27Not really. The sheep just drifted,

1:08:27 > 1:08:29and they didn't stay where they should have stayed.

1:08:29 > 1:08:31There's nothing you can do about it.

1:08:31 > 1:08:35- Because for that second outrun, you only got 1 out of 20.- Yes.

1:08:35 > 1:08:38And then the other problem that you had was on the second fetch.

1:08:38 > 1:08:41- That lost a lot of points too, didn't it?- Yes, yes.

1:08:41 > 1:08:46The sheep was that wee bit... maybe wily, sure.

1:08:46 > 1:08:48- Next time you'll do better, eh? - I hope so!

1:08:48 > 1:08:50And then, of course, you ran out of time.

1:08:50 > 1:08:53- Any idea what your score might have been?- No idea.

1:08:53 > 1:08:55It was 86 out of 150.

1:08:55 > 1:08:57Yes. Not so good.

1:08:57 > 1:08:58Disappointing round for you,

1:08:58 > 1:09:01- but you've still got a smile on your face.- Oh, aye.

1:09:01 > 1:09:04- That's what we like to see. Thanks for competing.- Great.

1:09:04 > 1:09:06I don't know how much the rest of the team are smiling, though,

1:09:06 > 1:09:09to be honest, because they were leading overnight,

1:09:09 > 1:09:11and it wasn't to be at the end,

1:09:11 > 1:09:14but, I mean, it was a great start, actually, wasn't it, Gus?

1:09:14 > 1:09:16- Yes.- The very beginning was good,

1:09:16 > 1:09:18but then it all boiled down to the second outrun,

1:09:18 > 1:09:20and there was a little bit of confusion there.

1:09:20 > 1:09:23Just the dog not really understanding that Bobby was asking him

1:09:23 > 1:09:26to look back or look at the top of the field.

1:09:26 > 1:09:28Yes, yes, he was wanting to go off to the right,

1:09:28 > 1:09:30so he had to pull him to the left,

1:09:30 > 1:09:32and then eventually he did go to the left,

1:09:32 > 1:09:34but he'd unfortunately crossed the course,

1:09:34 > 1:09:36so he lost a lot of points.

1:09:38 > 1:09:41And then, yeah, just too little too late, really, wasn't it,

1:09:41 > 1:09:42on the second drive gates?

1:09:42 > 1:09:46Yes, they went past, and really, he did bring the dog around,

1:09:46 > 1:09:50but unfortunately it was like having a second attempt,

1:09:50 > 1:09:52which they're not allowed to do.

1:09:52 > 1:09:56He brought them back to the second drive gate,

1:09:56 > 1:10:00and that wasn't good enough. They'd already passed.

1:10:00 > 1:10:05So he wouldn't have got any points for that particular set of gates.

1:10:05 > 1:10:07Yeah. And as we said then,

1:10:07 > 1:10:10the sheep just seemed a little bit shaken, didn't they?

1:10:10 > 1:10:13They got into this single, but he did well, didn't he?

1:10:13 > 1:10:16- This was kind of the second opportunity of the single.- Yes.

1:10:16 > 1:10:20He took it well, but he'd lost an awful lot of time.

1:10:20 > 1:10:21A real...

1:10:21 > 1:10:24He just had not got enough time then to finish.

1:10:26 > 1:10:28And then running out of time.

1:10:28 > 1:10:30It's awful when you head over to the pen

1:10:30 > 1:10:33and you know that you've got very, very little time indeed,

1:10:33 > 1:10:36but it was a very, very good effort, and he was applauded,

1:10:36 > 1:10:38of course, by the rest of his team,

1:10:38 > 1:10:43but it just wasn't enough to keep Ireland ahead of the rest of the UK.

1:10:43 > 1:10:47So, let's have a little look at the confirmation of the singles round.

1:10:47 > 1:10:52So, you can see that Ian with Mo, 146.

1:10:52 > 1:10:54They take the title for the singles

1:10:54 > 1:10:56with Kevin from Wales in second,

1:10:56 > 1:10:58Alf from England, and Bobby there,

1:10:58 > 1:11:01just rounding things off with 86.

1:11:02 > 1:11:05And so, in reverse order,

1:11:05 > 1:11:09we have Ireland with 264 points,

1:11:09 > 1:11:13then it's England with 281,

1:11:13 > 1:11:16and then in second it's Scotland with 302,

1:11:16 > 1:11:17but there is confirmation

1:11:17 > 1:11:21that Wales are this year's One Man And His Dog champions.

1:11:21 > 1:11:24Again, they retain the title this year.

1:11:27 > 1:11:29What a fantastic competition.

1:11:29 > 1:11:32It just goes to show that some rounds can go so brilliantly

1:11:32 > 1:11:35and then other rounds, everything seems to go wrong.

1:11:35 > 1:11:36It leaves us with one thing to do,

1:11:36 > 1:11:39which is to give out the trophy to the winning team,

1:11:39 > 1:11:43but before we do that, we give a very special, smaller trophy

1:11:43 > 1:11:46to the outstanding handler, and Gus, you're going to tell us

1:11:46 > 1:11:47who that is this year.

1:11:47 > 1:11:49Yes. A fellow that got off to a brilliant start,

1:11:49 > 1:11:52he did superb, and then - shock, horror -

1:11:52 > 1:11:55the sheep got off the course and jumped back into the pen,

1:11:55 > 1:11:58and it was John Griffiths from Wales for the Brace run yesterday.

1:11:58 > 1:12:01Fantastic. John, come forward.

1:12:01 > 1:12:02- That's a nice surprise!- Well done.

1:12:02 > 1:12:04APPLAUSE

1:12:04 > 1:12:06That's the second hug I've given you in the competition, is it?

1:12:06 > 1:12:08- There's your trophy. - Thank you very much.

1:12:08 > 1:12:12It really did go so well for you at the beginning. How do you feel?

1:12:12 > 1:12:16- Very, very chuffed. I'm so glad. - Well, congratulations.

1:12:16 > 1:12:19Well done, John. I'm absolutely over the moon for you, I really am.

1:12:19 > 1:12:22But now it's time for another trophy-giving,

1:12:22 > 1:12:25because it's time to give you back the trophy.

1:12:25 > 1:12:28Here you are, lads. This is for you. Congratulations, well done.

1:12:28 > 1:12:32The champions once again of One Man And His Dog 2012.

1:12:32 > 1:12:35APPLAUSE What about that?

1:12:35 > 1:12:37Super, super trialling all round.

1:12:37 > 1:12:40Thanks ever so much to our judges, and of course, to Gus.

1:12:40 > 1:12:41What a time we've had.

1:12:41 > 1:12:44Well, congratulations to Wales,

1:12:44 > 1:12:46and well done to all our competitors,

1:12:46 > 1:12:48and of course, their dogs.

1:12:48 > 1:12:50Yes. So, until next year, we'll see you again.

1:12:50 > 1:12:53- We'll see you here, actually, in Wales.- We'll be back!

1:12:53 > 1:12:56But there we are. Anyway, we have had a super, super time.

1:12:56 > 1:12:57- Thanks to you.- Thank you to you.

1:12:57 > 1:13:00Thanks to Gus. Thanks to the judges. Thanks to everybody here.

1:13:00 > 1:13:02And, of course, a very big thank you to the dogs.

1:13:02 > 1:13:04- Bye-bye.- Bye-bye.
