:00:29. > :00:35.Welcome to day two of the Royal Welsh Show 2011. I have been

:00:35. > :00:39.looking at these guys and enjoying the spectacular sight of a now RAF

:00:39. > :00:45.Lancaster flypast and discovering a special connection between it and

:00:45. > :00:52.the show. And I have been watching D-Day the classes this morning.

:00:52. > :00:58.Then they made way for one of my favourite competitions of the week,

:00:58. > :01:08.the beef Team of Five. And I stepped in as an exhibitor for the

:01:08. > :01:14.

:01:14. > :01:21.The Royal Welsh Show has an extraordinary 45 breeds of sheep

:01:21. > :01:25.competing here. There would be no better place in the world to be

:01:25. > :01:31.edgy exhibitor, unless you had never done it before because then

:01:31. > :01:36.it is terrifying. That is what happened to me when I took charge

:01:36. > :01:42.of these lambs. And tell a few weeks ago I had never really

:01:42. > :01:52.handled a sheep but thanks to the training and trust of the Earle

:01:52. > :01:53.

:01:53. > :01:59.family I was ready to step out onto the world of the sheep stage. Thank

:01:59. > :02:09.you very much, I hope I can look half as good. Enjoy every minute

:02:09. > :02:09.

:02:09. > :02:17.out there and good luck. A little bit of last-minute practice. On we

:02:17. > :02:22.go. In we go. Do you know what, this is such an incredible

:02:22. > :02:32.experience. I am in a real competition. I don't really care

:02:32. > :02:33.

:02:33. > :02:43.how I do up far from I just do want to give it my best. This is really

:02:43. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:56.nerve-racking. The you will be fine him. How do you think we will do?

:02:56. > :03:04.

:03:04. > :03:13.think you will do OK. Thank you. Thank you very much fills up it is

:03:13. > :03:20.my first time. I am enjoying it. Now I am amazed. When my first ever

:03:20. > :03:24.a tent that showing a sheep, 5th prize. I tell you what, all the

:03:25. > :03:31.people back in Cardiff will be really proud of me, the city boy

:03:31. > :03:35.coming out and having a goal and we came 5th. I feel great! What an

:03:35. > :03:41.afternoon! I have so much admiration for the people who come

:03:41. > :03:46.out here and show sheep, I understand totally white the put in

:03:46. > :03:56.so much preparation to get these animals ready. It is all worth it.

:03:56. > :03:58.

:03:58. > :04:06.Magical. Tuesday morning and be the classes get under way. Four breeds

:04:06. > :04:11.are vying for top honours. It all starts here. Since the crack of

:04:12. > :04:21.dawn each of these girls have been pampered and them to perfection to

:04:22. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:28.parade in front of the judges. James Evans keeps Jersey cattle on

:04:28. > :04:38.his farm income are Pincher. He is the real ambassador for the breed

:04:38. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:48.and hopes to do well here today. -- his farm in Carmarthen Show.

:04:48. > :04:56.best Jersey cows are here. To win the shore leaving just two when the

:04:56. > :05:02.class is an important thing for selling your stock. Winning a class

:05:02. > :05:10.is an achievement. You must be very proud being here today and seeing

:05:11. > :05:15.your son. He has put in a lot of work. We brought them here when he

:05:15. > :05:23.was five or six. I thought by the time he was 12 or 13 he would have

:05:23. > :05:28.had enough of it but he has ended up with his own little heard. We

:05:28. > :05:34.also have had joined heard. Those are the ones I have spent money on.

:05:34. > :05:41.You did have a setback recently, though, didn't you? Yes.

:05:41. > :05:51.Unfortunately one of our cows who had won a lot of shows passed away.

:05:51. > :05:52.

:05:52. > :06:02.That was about a month ago. She left as a little female Kath. It

:06:02. > :06:06.

:06:06. > :06:11.will be emotional going in the ring Of the eight animals James brought

:06:11. > :06:21.to the show this year he had the best result with the intermediate

:06:21. > :06:24.

:06:24. > :06:34.cow in milk, daffodil. It was a good strong class. The winner was a

:06:34. > :06:43.tremendous cow. Has it made up for the recent trouble? Yes. We will

:06:43. > :06:48.move on from here. Well done. you. The Royal Welsh Show is as

:06:48. > :06:54.much about the social element than the competition itself. For many

:06:55. > :07:02.this is the annual holiday. While horses are bedded down in stables

:07:02. > :07:07.overnight their owners often stay in lorries. This family arrived on

:07:07. > :07:15.Monday night from their home in Swansea. I caught up with them just

:07:15. > :07:22.before their class early the next morning. You are already hard at it.

:07:23. > :07:31.What is left to do? We have one plate left to do. We will oil her

:07:31. > :07:36.hooks. She will get tacked up and then we will pop our Radyr on her.

:07:36. > :07:43.She is a typical teenager, she is putting her make-up on. She will be

:07:43. > :07:51.down shortly. You look lovely. Can you believe this is the morning of

:07:51. > :07:55.the competition? I know. I am so nervous. Seeing that you were

:07:55. > :08:00.reserve champion last year I think she has probably a good idea of

:08:00. > :08:05.what is expected of her? I think she will have a good idea. We have

:08:05. > :08:15.been working for so long together that I think we can read each other

:08:15. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:35.was my mind. I love her to pieces. They have just come into the ring.

:08:35. > :08:41.I guess you must be feeling there is nothing much else you can do

:08:41. > :08:49.now? You are right, the nerves have now kicked in, all I can do is

:08:49. > :08:54.watch and hope. Did you get any sleep last night? About two hours.

:08:54. > :09:02.It was a fitful sleep! But we love showing, it is the adrenalin, we

:09:02. > :09:07.just hope everything goes OK. It is in the blood, you just do it.

:09:07. > :09:15.very much in the blood for your daughter, her dad was one of the

:09:15. > :09:21.judges? That's right, but she lost in the aged nine so that is why it

:09:22. > :09:31.is so important for her. I am glad we have come. She is up against

:09:32. > :09:40.

:09:40. > :09:45.some beautiful horses. We will just I think we are second! Oh my!

:09:45. > :09:51.is wonderful! It we have been beaten by a beautiful horse, I must

:09:51. > :09:58.admit. I am so thrilled. I think I am probably going to cry. She will

:09:58. > :10:08.never know how proud I am. Do you think her father would have been

:10:08. > :10:11.

:10:11. > :10:19.proud to question mac he would have Well done. You must have been

:10:19. > :10:29.delighted. I am really pleased. She went fast and I am just so pleased.

:10:29. > :10:39.

:10:39. > :10:48.Congratulations to both the view. Still to come tonight, kidding

:10:48. > :10:57.around in the got section. The amazing sight of a Lancaster bomber.

:10:57. > :11:03.And the pigs that flew the flag for the nation. The Welsh peg can be

:11:03. > :11:10.traced back to an indigenous and lop eared peg that dates back to

:11:10. > :11:16.the earliest times. In 2002 there were only 82 of these pecks left in

:11:16. > :11:22.the country and they were placed on the rare Breeds list. Now they are

:11:22. > :11:32.making a comeback. One man is fighting the good fight when it

:11:32. > :11:39.

:11:39. > :11:46.comes to saving our rear and endangered Welsh peg. -- pig.

:11:46. > :11:52.farm roughly 200 of these creatures. That is about one-third of the

:11:52. > :12:01.Welsh braiding hair at the moment. We have also got the only freedom

:12:01. > :12:07.Food pedigree herd in Wales. We have nearly 200 breeding animals.

:12:07. > :12:13.1,200 in total. That is from the little piglets right up and tell

:12:13. > :12:19.the finishing piglets. We had them since I left school for seven years.

:12:19. > :12:26.We won the Royal Show in 1977 and the farming policy was changed at

:12:26. > :12:31.that time. When I saw on television that the Welsh pig breed was on the

:12:31. > :12:38.endangered list I decided to keep a few but I increase them a lot more

:12:38. > :12:43.than that up to the numbers we have now. It is our native breed and is

:12:43. > :12:48.a very good quality animal. It have a great mothering ability and

:12:48. > :12:55.deport which we have supplied to restaurants and hotels, the chefs

:12:55. > :13:02.always come back and praise the texture and quality. You have

:13:02. > :13:07.breeding animals and you have show animals. There are always some that

:13:07. > :13:13.just stand out. I have not shown at the Royal Welsh Show for there

:13:13. > :13:23.years. This will be my first time showing pigs. It is the best show

:13:23. > :13:26.

:13:26. > :13:30.You are about to compete. How are you feeling? Nervous. What are your

:13:30. > :13:40.final preparations? We make sure that the animals are clean and we

:13:40. > :13:50.drive them of with a substance similar to talcum powder. Fancy

:13:50. > :14:10.

:14:10. > :14:20.your chances today? I do not know How does that feel? Very good.

:14:20. > :14:21.

:14:21. > :14:31.Congratulations. Very well deserve. Brilliant. Are you looking for some

:14:31. > :14:39.

:14:39. > :14:44.more or awards? Congratulations. There are five breeds of dairy

:14:44. > :14:51.goats competing for top honours this year. It is not just a case of

:14:51. > :14:56.looking good for these ladies, their milk is judged as well. The

:14:56. > :15:06.milk was analysed on Monday. Even if a court looks her best, she will

:15:06. > :15:08.

:15:08. > :15:13.not do well if her milk is not up to scratch. We spoke to the

:15:13. > :15:21.publicity officer for the British goat Society. He is passionate

:15:21. > :15:31.about goats and their improvement. I love just half-a-mile away from

:15:31. > :15:41.

:15:41. > :15:51.you. Tell me about the British tour in topcoats. -- British Toggenburg

:15:51. > :15:51.

:15:51. > :15:56.goats. We arrived on Saturday to settle the animals. The judging

:15:56. > :16:04.process is based on the milk yields that they have given. One the day

:16:04. > :16:11.of judging, the judge has the milk yield from 12 hours previously. He

:16:11. > :16:18.takes that into account when judging. Unfortunately, we only

:16:18. > :16:25.have half the number of competitors for this this year. Pratt's people

:16:25. > :16:32.are not interested in dairy goats or the amount of work involved,

:16:32. > :16:42.because they have to be milked twice every day, every day of the

:16:42. > :16:53.

:16:53. > :17:03.It is a great honour. They were not that many in the class, but they

:17:03. > :17:07.

:17:07. > :17:11.When most of us think about the feather pavilion at the Royal Welsh

:17:11. > :17:14.Show we tend to think of poultry. But there are some 240 pigeons to

:17:14. > :17:16.be seen here at the show, split into three sections. Fancy pigeons,

:17:17. > :17:20.flying pigeons and racing pigeons. We went to meet one enthusiastic

:17:20. > :17:30.young competitor who is a chip off the old block when it comes to

:17:30. > :17:32.

:17:32. > :17:41.keeping pigeons, learning his trade I will be taking a variety of

:17:41. > :17:46.pigeons to the Royal Welsh Show. am taking two different breeds of

:17:46. > :17:56.pigeons to the Royal Welsh Show this year. My main breed is the

:17:56. > :18:00.

:18:00. > :18:04.Dutch tumbler. My new breed it is the Portuguese tumbler. I was older

:18:04. > :18:13.when I started with pigeons. I did not have someone to go through it

:18:13. > :18:19.with me. My father made me a small box when I was 14 and I used to

:18:19. > :18:25.take the bus with the birds. don't have the same breeds as my

:18:25. > :18:35.grandfather because a lot of people would think that he does the work

:18:35. > :18:38.

:18:38. > :18:45.for me. You need to have all of your feathers right and make sure

:18:45. > :18:51.that their feet are intact. You have to make sure they're good

:18:51. > :18:57.enough for their condition of the showing. You have to make sure that

:18:58. > :19:05.their feathers are not spent. If you picked the feather into hot

:19:05. > :19:15.water, it will straighten back up. I am passing on my knowledge. But

:19:15. > :19:23.I'm still learning at my age. still wins in some places, but I am

:19:23. > :19:30.catching up. I do not like losing! The results came in yesterday. How

:19:31. > :19:35.did you do? I had Supreme Champion with the fancy pigeons. My grandson

:19:35. > :19:45.had another champion with his bird. It's you must be pleased. Very

:19:45. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:57.pleased. Looking at the decoration of that, it is extraordinary.

:19:57. > :20:00.

:20:00. > :20:07.difficult to keep clean, but their head is the most important feature.

:20:07. > :20:16.You have to be careful when daybreak the feathers on their feet.

:20:16. > :20:24.-- when it they and break the feathers on their feet. You are a

:20:24. > :20:30.steward here. So is your grandfather. What does that entail?

:20:30. > :20:40.You have to feed the birds and make sure there are safe and that

:20:40. > :20:54.

:20:54. > :21:02.nothing goes wrong. -- Make sure I used white top two in hands the

:21:02. > :21:12.legs of the animal. -- I used blackboard chalk to make sure that

:21:12. > :21:17.

:21:17. > :21:24.the legs are as white as possible. I use a comb to deal with the

:21:24. > :21:34.pattern and also some hears brave. It will keep in place for hours. --

:21:34. > :21:42.

:21:42. > :21:45.Today, the visitors to the show get to see the unique sight of the a

:21:45. > :21:48.fly-past by the only airworthy Lancaster bomber left in Britain, a

:21:48. > :21:51.tribute to Mr Richard Moseley, the show's honorary treasurer for 39

:21:51. > :21:53.years. The fly-past is honour to all those who, like Richard Moseley,

:21:53. > :21:56.risked and lost their lives during the Second World War.

:21:56. > :21:59.As an 18-year-old in the Second World War, Richard, or Dick,

:21:59. > :22:01.Moseley was rear gunner in a Lancaster Bomber, serving in RAF

:22:01. > :22:04.Bomber Command's 218 Gold Coast Squadron. This painting was gifted

:22:04. > :22:08.to the Royal Welsh Society by Dick Moseley to mark the 60th

:22:08. > :22:18.Anniversary of the end of that war. It depicts one of the raids in

:22:18. > :22:34.

:22:34. > :22:42.I am joined now by the family of Richard Moseley. This must at been

:22:42. > :22:48.an emotional occasion for you? was extremely emotional, yes.

:22:48. > :22:55.do you think your father would have felt when he saw this RAF fly-past?

:22:55. > :23:00.He would have been extremely plot - - proud and delighted that the

:23:00. > :23:04.Lancaster Bomber flew over the show today. He would have wanted to

:23:04. > :23:09.remember everyone who was part of the Second World War. He would have

:23:09. > :23:18.been very proud. He loved the Royal Welsh Show. It was his life after

:23:18. > :23:26.the RAF? Yes, he gave all the support that he could to the shall.

:23:26. > :23:36.He had another life before that when he was a young boy of 18. In

:23:36. > :23:43.those days, he had the nickname of ginger. Is that correct? It was an

:23:43. > :23:46.invitation to a fight to use that nickname! You are it's you

:23:46. > :23:56.representing the other members of the crew who sadly cannot be here

:23:56. > :23:56.

:23:56. > :24:06.for various reasons. You flew 32 missions? We did quite a few of

:24:06. > :24:07.

:24:07. > :24:17.them during the day as well. Richard's great day was over

:24:17. > :24:18.

:24:18. > :24:21.Britain. We lost several aircraft that day. He would give a

:24:21. > :24:30.commentary as good as you would hear in the Boat race. He would be

:24:30. > :24:38.telling as the distance. It must have been lovely to see the flyover

:24:38. > :24:48.today? I wish that Richard was here to see it as well. I hope that he

:24:48. > :25:02.

:25:02. > :25:05.was here in spirit. We shall never The Team of Five is always one of

:25:05. > :25:08.the highlights of the Royal Welsh Show as each of the 15 Pedigree

:25:08. > :25:11.Beef Breeds put together five of the best matching animals to

:25:11. > :25:14.represent their breed. The teams as chosen by the judge in each breed

:25:14. > :25:16.section. Last night, I was given a behind-the-scenes look at how this

:25:16. > :25:20.year's Limousin judge, Mr Craig Ridley, went about choosing his

:25:20. > :25:25.breed's quintet to go forward to the Team of Five competition. You

:25:25. > :25:29.had a difficult job because there were more than 100 entrants. How do

:25:29. > :25:36.you choose the five different animals? You are looking for

:25:36. > :25:46.animals that match each other. The judge has to say that they are all

:25:46. > :25:52.

:25:52. > :25:57.good, rather than individuals. joined ringside by one breeder. We

:25:57. > :26:04.know where your loyalties lie. What you think of the team this year?

:26:04. > :26:09.They have a fantastic range of five individual animals. Whether they

:26:09. > :26:17.are quite even enough to win this competition, I am not too sure. As

:26:17. > :26:22.individuals, they are very good animals. This competition is about

:26:22. > :26:32.showcasing the breed. This particular breed is celebrating its

:26:32. > :26:47.

:26:47. > :26:52.40th anniversary in the UK. It has I know it is difficult for you to

:26:52. > :26:58.be objective, but to do you think will take it? It is very difficult

:26:58. > :27:03.to decide. The Welsh Black would be the breed that will be most popular

:27:03. > :27:08.with the people watching around the ring. However, I think that the

:27:08. > :27:12.Belgian Blues will be very dangerous today. What about your

:27:12. > :27:19.own breed? I think they will be in the running, but maybe not quite

:27:19. > :27:24.there. 17 years after it this competition began at the Royal

:27:24. > :27:34.Welsh Show, judging this year was in the capable hands of former and

:27:34. > :27:36.

:27:36. > :27:43.well known Sagar Trebor Edwards. -- well-known singer. You were right

:27:44. > :27:47.that the British Blue won first place. What do you think? I think

:27:48. > :27:57.he is quite correct. They matched much more evenly than any other

:27:58. > :27:58.

:27:58. > :28:08.group here. Congratulations. Second time in a role for some very good

:28:08. > :28:11.

:28:11. > :28:14.for this breed. -- second time in at a row. Very good for this breed.

:28:14. > :28:18.It's Cob day here tomorrow as well as Supreme Championship Day in the

:28:18. > :28:21.Cattle and Sheep rings, so remember to join us again tomorrow night at

:28:21. > :28:24.7:30pm on BBC Two. Catch up with anything you've missed on iPlayer.

:28:24. > :28:27.You can also debate the show's hot topics as Taro Post will be coming

:28:27. > :28:30.live from the showground tomorrow from midday on BBC Radio Cymru. To

:28:30. > :28:32.finish this evening, we leave you some of those who've tasted success
