0:00:19 > 0:00:22Welcome to the second day of the Royal Welsh Show 2012. There has

0:00:22 > 0:00:25been our very international feel to the Show this year as eight

0:00:25 > 0:00:29countries came together in the main ring to compete for the very first

0:00:29 > 0:00:36time in the Royal Welsh will mounted games. I when ringside to

0:00:36 > 0:00:40find out who took the top honours. Tuesday is Ladies Day and I have

0:00:40 > 0:00:46been to see one of the highlights of the Show at the dairy cows try

0:00:46 > 0:00:51to charm the judges. After my experience I am back in

0:00:51 > 0:01:01she rings to find out what is happening this year. I came face to

0:01:01 > 0:01:03

0:01:03 > 0:01:08face with a Blue Faced Leicester! When you watch the dairy cows

0:01:08 > 0:01:12compete at the Royal Welsh, things can seem pretty black-and-white.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16But farmer Geraint Thomas likes a bit of colour in his life. He

0:01:16 > 0:01:26prefers a different breed of cattle and is competing with his Ayrshires

0:01:26 > 0:01:33this year, hoping to make his mark. Why did you go for the air showers

0:01:33 > 0:01:43-- Ayrshires? I had been coming here for years. I have always

0:01:43 > 0:01:45

0:01:45 > 0:01:55admired the Ayrshires. We had big Holsteins, this was it the system

0:01:55 > 0:01:55

0:01:55 > 0:02:03as well. Is it as competitive a world as the Holsteins? Absolutely.

0:02:03 > 0:02:11I bring a team up and will flee I will win. We turn them out as good

0:02:11 > 0:02:16as we can. Top me through your line of ladies that you have got here.

0:02:16 > 0:02:22have three impressive ladies here. We have high hopes for her and we

0:02:22 > 0:02:28will see how little goal in a few hours. Unfortunately these two

0:02:28 > 0:02:33Hauser in the same class. I do not know which way the judges will go.

0:02:33 > 0:02:43I like your confidence. How much sleep did you get last night?

0:02:43 > 0:02:54

0:02:54 > 0:02:58hours. I do not meet the The cows seemed glad to be off

0:02:58 > 0:03:04their backs and there was plenty to please the judge. After winning in

0:03:04 > 0:03:09his class, he was back in the ring with all the winners for the

0:03:09 > 0:03:16Supreme Championship. He won reserve champion with his junior

0:03:16 > 0:03:25cow. Fantastic result. Reserve champion.

0:03:25 > 0:03:34Fantastic. Great show. Have fantastic line-up. We look forward

0:03:34 > 0:03:44to tomorrow. We will have a good day tomorrow as well. And Katie did

0:03:44 > 0:03:45

0:03:45 > 0:03:49a good job. I think it was the looks that did it. Good show?

0:03:49 > 0:03:53really pleased. No Royal Welsh Show has more reason

0:03:53 > 0:03:57sheet on display than any other agricultural show in the world.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01They come in all shapes and sizes but he's a perhaps some of the most

0:04:01 > 0:04:07unusual shape you will find here. These other blue face Leicesters

0:04:07 > 0:04:16and this year sees the society's 50th anniversary. Michael James is

0:04:16 > 0:04:21hoping this year his chic shine in the Show. -- Kishi.

0:04:21 > 0:04:28My uncle and his wife and three children have brought aid of the

0:04:28 > 0:04:34ugly face Leicester's to the Show from their farm near Builth. --

0:04:34 > 0:04:40Blue Faced Leicester us. It is a native breed. It is a big long

0:04:40 > 0:04:50sheet, a very big sheet. It does not have big bulk like other

0:04:50 > 0:04:53

0:04:53 > 0:04:59cheaper in this country. There used to graze on hills. Judging is

0:04:59 > 0:05:05underway. LR, this is quite unusual. Are you

0:05:05 > 0:05:11expecting them to be harvested? is the best way to judge the sheet.

0:05:11 > 0:05:20They are free, they can walk around. So you can get the full effect of

0:05:20 > 0:05:25the sheep. It starts well with a few wins.

0:05:25 > 0:05:31What is different about this particular class? This differs to

0:05:31 > 0:05:37the other class. The last class we watched was were aged used, this is

0:05:37 > 0:05:47a yearly used, which means their younger female sheet. It is still a

0:05:47 > 0:05:47

0:05:47 > 0:05:57female class and once again the judges have tapped on Michael's

0:05:57 > 0:06:01

0:06:01 > 0:06:11sheep. You are absolutely jokingly! This is unbelievable! Hold on, L.

0:06:11 > 0:06:18Three out of the reef. Amazing. we have just seen the red tickets

0:06:18 > 0:06:23there. What is next? What is next for us is our three winning female

0:06:23 > 0:06:28sheep will go head-to-head against each other for the best female and

0:06:28 > 0:06:38then that will go against the best meal or the overall regional

0:06:38 > 0:06:38

0:06:38 > 0:06:45champion. And the shearling ewe was crowned champion. Expectations were

0:06:45 > 0:06:49high. And, yes, you have guessed it, what a day for the vice chairman of

0:06:49 > 0:06:54the Society of the Blue Faced Leicester us. It has been an

0:06:54 > 0:07:00unbelievable day. Every class we have been out in, we have one. And

0:07:00 > 0:07:07then to go out and have Rhys are female and champion female, and

0:07:07 > 0:07:17then overall Blue Faced Leicester champion, it is unbelievable.

0:07:17 > 0:07:17

0:07:17 > 0:07:26There are over 1000 stands at the sure and up to 100 on the waiting

0:07:26 > 0:07:36list. It is really quite difficult to get sent but it is well worth it.

0:07:36 > 0:07:37

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Great to be part of the Show. That is one of the most famous

0:07:42 > 0:07:49voices here at the Royal Welsh Show, it is a voice that is synonymous

0:07:49 > 0:07:57with the competitions here in the main ring. We will move away from

0:07:57 > 0:08:01the judging later. Charles Arch has been commentating

0:08:01 > 0:08:05here for 35 years and his knowledge of the competition and competitors

0:08:05 > 0:08:15is legendary. We cut up with them in the midst of his preparations

0:08:15 > 0:08:20for this year's show. I start picking up titbits from any peak

0:08:20 > 0:08:26hour that refers to the Show is going on all the country. And I

0:08:26 > 0:08:31store them. So why have there is build up of Winnie's all the time.

0:08:31 > 0:08:39But that is the picture you have got to build it you want to do some

0:08:39 > 0:08:46commentary work. During the four days, they will have been probably

0:08:46 > 0:08:55up to 15 people through the tower. What I have tried to do and what I

0:08:55 > 0:09:02have tried to build up is to try and get an expert on a be section.

0:09:02 > 0:09:08The work beforehand can be dreary at times! But the Show itself, once

0:09:08 > 0:09:15you get into things, it starts to carry you along. And before you

0:09:15 > 0:09:19know it, you are welcoming people there are one registering morning.

0:09:20 > 0:09:26One thing that I am convinced is that unless you are on top of the

0:09:26 > 0:09:35job as commentator, unless you can pick up names and happenings just

0:09:35 > 0:09:41like that, you are not doing your job. We have got a full programme

0:09:41 > 0:09:51and I could go on and on but it will carry us to 8 o'clock tonight.

0:09:51 > 0:09:51

0:09:51 > 0:09:56And we will be joining Charles later on in the programme.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00And coming up: I meet a prison officer who has got his pigs on

0:10:00 > 0:10:05parole for the day and say there will be in the main ring to watch

0:10:05 > 0:10:10the final of the world mounted against Team Championships.

0:10:10 > 0:10:20Not many Royal Welsh competitors can claim to be at the top of their

0:10:20 > 0:10:31

0:10:31 > 0:10:37game but after 11 consecutive golds at Chelsea, I think champion veg

0:10:37 > 0:10:41grow our... A lot of time and preparation goes

0:10:42 > 0:10:46into making the venture look at taught at leat tantalising and of

0:10:46 > 0:10:50course tasty. You are back after a 26 year

0:10:50 > 0:10:54absence here at the Royal Welsh Show. What brought you back? I came

0:10:55 > 0:11:01back to give a vote of thanks to the Royal Welsh because they kicked

0:11:01 > 0:11:05me off into this and I got a gold medal in my first attempt. I stayed

0:11:05 > 0:11:10for five years. Without that I would never have achieved Hampton

0:11:10 > 0:11:16Court and Chelsea and all the other shows that I have done in America.

0:11:16 > 0:11:23I have heard that you have won 11 golds at Chelsea. Is that correct?

0:11:23 > 0:11:30That is absolutely Collette -- correct. How have you done today?

0:11:30 > 0:11:38We got the silver cup for the best display. And we got there first

0:11:38 > 0:11:47Olympic medal. This is to be kept, I can keep up one. Top King of

0:11:47 > 0:11:52looking beautiful, do you get is ready yourself? -- topping. We used

0:11:52 > 0:12:022000 cocktail sticks to do this display. Six of us came down to do

0:12:02 > 0:12:09

0:12:09 > 0:12:19this. It takes us two 40 nowadays and I just love it. -- 14 hour days.

0:12:19 > 0:12:24

0:12:24 > 0:12:29A good display stand has to have an interest factor.

0:12:29 > 0:12:34Chris Impey is someone who is used to having a captive audience.

0:12:34 > 0:12:41Prison officer by day, he has been showing pigs for 20 years and it

0:12:41 > 0:12:47all started at Prescoed Prison. When I first joined the Prison

0:12:47 > 0:12:51Service I came to work in the prison farm. I did know -- not know

0:12:51 > 0:13:00anything about pigs so I went for a job interview and died studied for

0:13:00 > 0:13:06a few days and I managed to get my way into the job. -- and I read up.

0:13:06 > 0:13:15It allowed me the opportunity to keep my own which what my intention

0:13:15 > 0:13:25was originally. Any pigs that I kept, the then became my main heard.

0:13:25 > 0:13:25

0:13:25 > 0:13:35After becoming 10 -- being the pagan manager for 10 years he left.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38

0:13:38 > 0:13:42He now keeps his pigs in another farm. They're bride-to-be --

0:13:42 > 0:13:51together with farm staff, crisis and the process of reintroducing

0:13:51 > 0:13:55pigs back to Prescoed Prison with a new venture in mind.

0:13:55 > 0:14:03We have a new enterprise were we have a high-class restaurant being

0:14:03 > 0:14:11placed in the car park. That will employ prisoners and feed, through

0:14:11 > 0:14:16the restaurant, locally do right foot. So the plan is to reintroduce

0:14:16 > 0:14:20pigs to a prison and then so sing them back into this -- into the

0:14:20 > 0:14:30restaurant. It will be nice to be able to offer people locally

0:14:30 > 0:14:39

0:14:39 > 0:14:47How have preparations been going? Really well. We have been preparing

0:14:47 > 0:14:57for months and months. What is your role in the team? I help my dad. We

0:14:57 > 0:14:58

0:14:58 > 0:15:02all work together to help my dad. What breed of pigs do you show?

0:15:02 > 0:15:12show Middle White instead of a Berkshire. I think they are a

0:15:12 > 0:15:12

0:15:12 > 0:15:20better breed. Cool is the best that showing pigs? It has got to be me.

0:15:20 > 0:15:26The confidence of youth. modesty!

0:15:26 > 0:15:32How is Joe getting on? He is not doing too bad. He is just walking

0:15:32 > 0:15:42her quietly. If anything, I want him to pick up a little bit. I did

0:15:42 > 0:15:42

0:15:42 > 0:15:47shout at him at one point. you're loud? -- is that allowed?

0:15:47 > 0:15:57has got to give them a little bit of encouragement. It is Daniel's

0:15:57 > 0:16:02turn now. This pig, he did not read this page himself, this is one I

0:16:02 > 0:16:08bought for him for his birthday last year. These pigs are all under

0:16:08 > 0:16:15his name. And they are behaving beautifully. It is. She is a

0:16:15 > 0:16:19plodder. You were dealing with a behaviour which, in prison, you are

0:16:19 > 0:16:24dealing with prisoners, and here we are dealing with pigs, and it is

0:16:24 > 0:16:30all about behaviour and are trying to predict the behaviour. When it

0:16:30 > 0:16:35is bad behaviour, stop it, when it is good behaviour, encourage it.

0:16:35 > 0:16:39very professional performance from Daniel and chill in the ring,

0:16:39 > 0:16:42supported all the way by a very proud dad. Just enough time to

0:16:42 > 0:16:45enjoy the show and the sunshine before going back to prison on

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Friday. Still to come in tonight's

0:16:48 > 0:16:51programme: I'll be popping down to the

0:16:51 > 0:16:54forestry area to help celebrate 40 years of display and competition in

0:16:54 > 0:16:57the wood chopping section. And we'll have one of the big

0:16:57 > 0:16:59highlights of the week as Rachael watches the various beef breeds

0:16:59 > 0:17:02battle it out in the Team of Five competition.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05If you were with us yesterday, you'd have seen the initial heats

0:17:05 > 0:17:08of the semi-final of the Royal Welsh World Mounted Games, where

0:17:08 > 0:17:11teams of five riders from eight countries were battling it out for

0:17:11 > 0:17:14a place in the final. Well, the big day has arrived and soon we'll know

0:17:14 > 0:17:22which team is to be crowned champions of the tournament. So

0:17:22 > 0:17:32let's meet the team representing Wales. Captain, Huw Whitney, tell

0:17:32 > 0:17:42me who everyone is. On my left is Jack Evans. Emma Thomas. Aaron

0:17:42 > 0:17:42

0:17:42 > 0:17:47Jones. Jordan Evans. He is the baby of the teams. Jack, have you

0:17:47 > 0:17:56completed before? You s, about four times an hour. It gets harder every

0:17:56 > 0:17:59year. Jemma, how often do you train? We train twice a week for

0:17:59 > 0:18:04about three months before. build up a close relationship with

0:18:04 > 0:18:08your horse, especially when you are doing things that are so athletic.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Fax it is all about the bond between the Ryder and the horse.

0:18:11 > 0:18:17You have got to have faced the horses going to go in the right

0:18:17 > 0:18:26direction. It looks to me as though you have got a great team. Good

0:18:26 > 0:18:30So while the team went off to prepare, I made my way to the Main

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Ring to be sure of a good spot to watch the competition. And who

0:18:33 > 0:18:36better to explain the games and talk us through the event than Alex

0:18:36 > 0:18:46Franklin, previous runner up in the Individual World Mounted Games

0:18:46 > 0:18:46

0:18:46 > 0:18:51Championships. What does it mean, being world

0:18:51 > 0:18:56champion in the sport? Be in the world champion is the best accolade

0:18:56 > 0:19:01you can get. It means everything. I am lucky enough that I have managed

0:19:01 > 0:19:07to win three world titles. Unfortunately I have not made the

0:19:07 > 0:19:11individual one yet. Where is everybody plays now? We came into

0:19:11 > 0:19:15this second part of the final with England two points behind France in

0:19:15 > 0:19:25the lead. France have continued to build a lead through this session

0:19:25 > 0:19:40

0:19:40 > 0:19:45Is this getting more popular as an event? It is. We were always looked

0:19:45 > 0:19:49down upon because we ride one- handed, we don't ride with our

0:19:49 > 0:19:59stirrups all the time, and people looked down upon us, but now they

0:19:59 > 0:20:17

0:20:17 > 0:20:24England, Wales and Ireland are in a line at the very last term. France

0:20:24 > 0:20:30are the new champions. It was fast, it was furious, but a very well

0:20:30 > 0:20:37deserved winner. France are Royal Welsh Mounted Games champions.

0:20:37 > 0:20:42Wales finished 4th. 4th in the world, absolutely amazing. It is

0:20:42 > 0:20:46really hot out there, I am really proud of everyone. If we could have

0:20:46 > 0:20:53road like this yesterday, we could have been world champions. Well

0:20:53 > 0:20:56done, Wales. Thank you very much. Since Saturday, when the animals

0:20:56 > 0:21:02first arrived on site, the stockmen have used a staggering 3,500 straw

0:21:02 > 0:21:07bales, big and small, to bed their cattle, sheep, horses and pigs.

0:21:07 > 0:21:17That's a lot of dirty straw at the end of the week. And whoever has to

0:21:17 > 0:21:19

0:21:19 > 0:21:22clean it up will obviously have had the short straw.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25Earlier in the programme, we met one of the great characters of the

0:21:25 > 0:21:28Show preparing at home for his duties this week. I'm pleased to

0:21:28 > 0:21:33say I'm going up to the commentary box to meet Show commentator

0:21:33 > 0:21:38Charles Arch and see him in action. Charles, thank you for inviting us

0:21:38 > 0:21:43into the commentary box. This is where it all happens. This is the

0:21:43 > 0:21:50last year for you, taking on a full-time basis. It must be very a

0:21:50 > 0:21:56poignant time. It is. I am sure on Thursday night I will feel quite

0:21:56 > 0:22:02sad but I do feel the time has come to hand over to a younger person

0:22:02 > 0:22:07and I will be supporting that person, I will be doing the odd

0:22:07 > 0:22:12piece of commentary, but the total responsibility will not be mine any

0:22:13 > 0:22:18longer. Perhaps I will have the odd spell over in the grandstand.

0:22:18 > 0:22:28you started, did you get any coaching at all? No, I was thrown

0:22:28 > 0:22:32

0:22:32 > 0:22:37into it. The late know well in Phillips, he threw me into it. I

0:22:37 > 0:22:42landed up here. I don't think I will ever forget that first day.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46is obviously a major part of your life in more ways than one. When

0:22:46 > 0:22:56you come back to the show and you are not a full stream commentator,

0:22:56 > 0:22:56

0:22:56 > 0:23:00it is going to be rather odd. and I daresay I will be a critic. I

0:23:00 > 0:23:07will go to the grandstand and I will listen and think, why is he

0:23:07 > 0:23:12doing that? Perhaps the best thing for me is to go to one of the beer

0:23:12 > 0:23:15tents and sit down and talk. Thank you so much for everything you have

0:23:15 > 0:23:19done at the Royal Welsh Show and good luck.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22For me, this is probably the highlight of the week. I'm

0:23:22 > 0:23:32enthralled by the size, power and character of the animals that

0:23:32 > 0:23:45

0:23:45 > 0:23:48represent each breed in the Team of Five animals that compliment each

0:23:48 > 0:23:52other in appearance are selected by the judge of each breed to compete

0:23:52 > 0:23:55as a team. The winners will be the team of individuals that best match

0:23:55 > 0:23:58each other on the day. With me is one Lady President and

0:23:58 > 0:24:00one Lady Chairman, or Chairwoman, who share my passion for this

0:24:00 > 0:24:02wonderful competition, both called Elizabeth. Elizabeth Rees is

0:24:02 > 0:24:06President of the Welsh Black Cattle Society and Elizabeth McCombe is

0:24:06 > 0:24:10Chairman of the Highland Cattle Society in Wales. Elizabeth Rees,

0:24:10 > 0:24:16you would make you have been converted to farming. Why did you

0:24:16 > 0:24:19go for the Welsh Black? When we decided to start farming, we only

0:24:19 > 0:24:24had a small farm, we wanted something with a lot of interest

0:24:24 > 0:24:28and what better than the native breed? It is not the native breed

0:24:28 > 0:24:33of Wales for no reason. We thought we could not go wrong and we have

0:24:33 > 0:24:38not regretted it. It is the best decision I have ever made.

0:24:38 > 0:24:43there is something about black cattle and green grass. But we have

0:24:43 > 0:24:47seen numbers dropped. Why is that? There were a lot of factors

0:24:48 > 0:24:55affecting us this year. I would say the greatest reason is the TB

0:24:55 > 0:25:00problem. What are numbers like for the Highland breed? TB have

0:25:00 > 0:25:05affected us has well but we do the best we can. The cattle are

0:25:05 > 0:25:11extremely good this year. The judging is very tight. So we have

0:25:11 > 0:25:15got to native Celtic breeds of black cattle. Wouldn't it be great

0:25:15 > 0:25:19to see a native breed winning this competition? It would be fantastic,

0:25:19 > 0:25:23and it would be lovely to see the Welsh Black a winner. We have got

0:25:23 > 0:25:33every chance so we will keep our fingers crossed. But we will have

0:25:33 > 0:25:35

0:25:35 > 0:25:42to go with the judge. Let's see As the judge is drawing his first

0:25:42 > 0:25:45short list, bringing them forward, what is catching your rights?

0:25:45 > 0:25:52thought the long one Team of Five or is extremely good this year. A

0:25:52 > 0:25:58nice size and they walked together really well. But it would be a

0:25:58 > 0:26:03great fillip for native Farmers' definitive breed can winner. What

0:26:03 > 0:26:07do you fancy? If I am going to say the Welsh Black, but another black

0:26:07 > 0:26:12breed is the Aberdeen Angus and they are really good. Whether they

0:26:12 > 0:26:22will be brought forward, we will have to wait and see. It would be

0:26:22 > 0:26:31

0:26:31 > 0:26:41It was the limits and that took it in the end about the Welsh back

0:26:41 > 0:26:43

0:26:44 > 0:26:49Scottish reserve. -- limits and -- limousine. A great team effort.

0:26:49 > 0:26:56Time to celebrate tonight? happens every night at the Royal
