:00:29. > :00:34.It's been another exciting, action- packed day here at the Royal Welsh
:00:34. > :00:38.Show, and packed with visitors as well. Yesterday over 70,000 came
:00:39. > :00:43.through the gates, so at this rate, the records for day attendance
:00:43. > :00:47.figure could well be broken. For me today has been one of extremes with
:00:47. > :00:51.guinea-pigs petite and groomed to perfection, and the Supreme Horse
:00:51. > :00:54.Championship, a perfect demonstration of grace and power in
:00:55. > :01:00.the main ring. For me it has been all about the
:01:00. > :01:05.sheep as I got caught up in the frenzy that is be all nations open
:01:05. > :01:08.shearing competition and met the person who won the prize for the
:01:08. > :01:15.best stockman this year. I came down to see if the axe men
:01:15. > :01:19.can cut the shearers down to size in the new competition to test
:01:19. > :01:29.their skills against the clock. And it is my opportunity to catch up
:01:29. > :01:34.
:01:34. > :01:39.with my adopted family, the Davises, If you are a sheep breeder, there
:01:39. > :01:42.is one title you aspire to, the sheep champion of champions, and
:01:42. > :01:48.that competition was held at the end of the day here yesterday. Last
:01:48. > :01:53.year, that honour went to a very surprised Dean and Neil Radnor with
:01:53. > :01:59.their health Radnor Ram, Basil. It was such an achievement for you
:01:59. > :02:05.to win here last year with your Hill Radnor. What has it meant you?
:02:05. > :02:10.It has just been absolutely amazing. We have done really well with
:02:10. > :02:18.selling I used thanks to the show, and we have had people ringing up
:02:18. > :02:21.all the time wanting to buy sheep - - hour you was. A home-bred sheet
:02:21. > :02:26.means so much more, it is the culmination of a long time of
:02:26. > :02:30.trying to breed a good sheep, and part there must admit the breeding
:02:30. > :02:34.of the sheep and the work of organising things is down to my
:02:34. > :02:38.mother, and without her I would not be able to carry on, she is
:02:38. > :02:44.brilliant. Unfortunately she is not well at the moment. We wish her
:02:44. > :02:48.well. Do you think you could win here or is it -- again or is it
:02:48. > :02:54.wants and lifetime? Anyone who comes here on a Sunday evening with
:02:54. > :02:59.sheep, the quality of all stock here, there is no way anyone would
:02:59. > :03:03.be big-headed enough to think they would win. To get a ribbon on its
:03:03. > :03:06.own in this show is a big achievement but champion of
:03:06. > :03:10.champions a dream come true. didn't make the final this year but
:03:10. > :03:14.have you enjoyed it? I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

:03:49. > :03:52.Many congratulations. We just heard them say the best she'd been there

:03:57. > :04:04.great show and I am delighted to win it. A -- the best she put in
:04:04. > :04:09.the world are here. The Royal Welsh is all about competition and
:04:09. > :04:13.finding the best, but this year is a brand new competition pitting two
:04:13. > :04:16.of the most unlikely competitors against one another, for this is
:04:16. > :04:23.where the axe men meet the sheep shearers.
:04:23. > :04:27.The axe men can cut through a lock in 20 seconds, the same time it

:04:51. > :04:56.Whose idea was this? It is something they tried at Kington

:14:27. > :14:37.fantastic, we were the only all- woman team to win it, so fantastic,
:14:37. > :14:42.
:14:42. > :14:46.go goals! Absolutely! -- go girls. It may be just a few days until the
:14:46. > :14:56.Olympics in London. Here some chose their teams to compete at the show
:14:56. > :14:59.weeks ago. Jack James has a squad of 12 guinea pigs to compete in the
:14:59. > :15:04.Fur and Feather pavilion, while his granddaughter Natasha has carefully
:15:04. > :15:13.selected her team of four. But there's a lot of work to do before
:15:13. > :15:19.the stars arrive at The Royal Welsh. I've picked my team to go to The
:15:19. > :15:23.Royal Welsh six, seven weeks ago. But I do not start bathing them
:15:23. > :15:27.until about five or six days before the show. I bath them before the
:15:27. > :15:32.show for the simple reason that their coat sits back tidy then and
:15:32. > :15:37.then we give them a little bit of extra special stuff and yeah, and
:15:37. > :15:42.when they go from here they like a bottle. Never seen anything like it
:15:42. > :15:47.before. He looks after them while he -- he looks after them well,
:15:47. > :15:53.treats them well and spoils them. If my guinea pigs are not well, I
:15:53. > :15:58.sperpblly think that the dedication use they use. I use it any way and
:15:59. > :16:05.it hasn't done them no harm. A guinea pig has got to have vitamin
:16:05. > :16:10.C, cabbage, celery, ables, carrots. They've got to have tidy food
:16:10. > :16:16.otherwise it's not worth the time. He's up here 24/7 every day of the
:16:16. > :16:25.week. Natasha will be competing next year, but I'll have to look
:16:25. > :16:29.out for that because she might be beating me! Well Jack and Natasha
:16:29. > :16:33.here we are at the royal wash show with the guinea pigs. The coats are
:16:33. > :16:39.beautifully glossy. What is your secret, how do you preb them?
:16:39. > :16:43.can't give secrets away. I honestly can't. Natasha how did your
:16:43. > :16:48.interest start, was it watching grandpa? Yeah that was how it
:16:48. > :16:55.startd. One day he bought me one for myself. Yes. We wish you the
:16:55. > :17:01.very best of luck. We'll come back later and see how you've done.
:17:01. > :17:06.Jack and Natasha, it's been a long day judging. How did you get on?
:17:06. > :17:12.happen to have the reserve Best in Show and I also had the best smooth
:17:12. > :17:19.coated guinea pig. That's fantastic. What but Jack? I had nothing.
:17:20. > :17:23.Nothing? Only a few first cards. Aahhh. Natasha has done better than
:17:23. > :17:29.you? I'll have to do something better than I'm doing now. She's
:17:29. > :17:33.had a good teacher. I tried my best. Well done for taking part. We leek
:17:33. > :17:37.forward to seeing both next year. Thank you.
:17:37. > :17:40.I have had the most fantastic week. I've had an opportunity to see
:17:40. > :17:48.behind-the-scenes here at The Royal Welsh. I've prepared some of the
:17:48. > :17:52.best dairy cows in Europe. All of this has been possible because of
:17:52. > :17:57.the Davies family from Whitland. Thank you so much. You must have
:17:57. > :18:01.been so stressed and yet you were so very kind to me. I hope I didn't
:18:01. > :18:04.get under your feet too much? no, no. It has been a very
:18:04. > :18:11.stressful couple of weeks getting to the show. But it's paid off well
:18:11. > :18:15.for us. I think from that first night you helped us and you managed
:18:15. > :18:20.to catch that poo out of the cow, that was a good stepping stone for
:18:20. > :18:25.a successful week. I'd love to believe that was true. I'm sure I
:18:25. > :18:30.had no influence on you getting red carded. You need a good time behind
:18:30. > :18:34.you really. We had a great week. We came with four animals. We've had
:18:34. > :18:38.three first prizes. Champion as well. We've had a fantastic week.
:18:38. > :18:43.All thanks to your help. What happens next? Start looking forward
:18:43. > :18:48.to the next show, Pembrokeshire in about three weeks. Get ready to do
:18:48. > :18:52.it all again. What about next year? We hope to go back here again next
:18:52. > :18:57.year. It's a fantastic event. It's an honour to be part of this show.
:18:57. > :19:02.There's so much good work going on across the show ground. To be
:19:02. > :19:05.successful here in front of all the people really is really is a truly
:19:05. > :19:13.tremendous feeling. Well, congratulations both once again and
:19:13. > :19:18.thank you so much. Thank you. you very much.
:19:18. > :19:22.Here at The Royal Welsh show it's the shearing that's the most
:19:22. > :19:32.gruelling of sports. Yesterday we went along to watch the Open all
:19:32. > :19:34.
:19:34. > :19:40.The shearers come from Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland,
:19:40. > :19:44.France, Australia, New Zealand, in fact, anywhere there are sheep, to
:19:44. > :19:49.battle it out for the title of all nations shearing champion. One man
:19:49. > :19:55.tipped to do the Welsh proud is Richard Jones. He's been competing
:19:55. > :20:00.at the same level as Gareth Daniel, last year's champion. The sheep are
:20:00. > :20:03.ready, are you? Nearly. Nearly ready, hopefully. Do you get
:20:03. > :20:07.nervous? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Especially at The Royal Welsh. There's a lot
:20:07. > :20:12.of people watching. It's a big event here. How do you control the
:20:12. > :20:15.nerves then snfrplgts you just try to forget about the people watching
:20:15. > :20:19.and just concentrate. You represented Wales in New Zealand
:20:19. > :20:25.earlier this year at the golden shears, how did that go? Very well.
:20:25. > :20:35.We were third as a team u, me and Gareth. I was eighth overall. I was
:20:35. > :20:42.
:20:42. > :20:47.pleased with that. Luck. Unfortunately Richard was knocked
:20:47. > :20:50.out of the all nations in the semi- finals and although he showed a
:20:50. > :20:54.promising performance he didn't match up to the standard of the
:20:54. > :20:59.other shearers on the day. Richard, I heard you described here as a
:20:59. > :21:03.lean, mean shearing machine, how has the day been? Excellent. I've
:21:03. > :21:07.had a good day. I qualified to shear for Wales in the Test and
:21:07. > :21:13.made the final championship of Wales. Congratulations. It was a
:21:13. > :21:17.joy to watch. Thank you very much. This is it, the open all nations
:21:17. > :21:23.final. Richard Jones didn't make the final this year, but we have
:21:23. > :21:29.got six of the world's top shearers. Now is this the one they want to
:21:29. > :21:37.win? Yes, of course. As you can see there's only two Welshmen through,
:21:37. > :21:42.Gareth Daniels and Ian Jones. Johnny Kay and Dave Vegan. It's
:21:42. > :21:46.between Ian Jones and the veteran, David Fagan from New Zealand.
:21:46. > :21:56.That's correct. It looks like Dave has taken the lead. Nobody will
:21:56. > :22:02.
:22:02. > :22:10.There he goes. David Fagan comes off first.
:22:10. > :22:16.Ian Jones! APPLAUSE
:22:16. > :22:20.Johnny KirkPatrick. I'd like to present the Open All Nations
:22:20. > :22:25.Champion at The Royal Welsh this year David Fagan. You're
:22:25. > :22:30.unstoppable. What's the secret? secret. I'm happy to teach anyone
:22:30. > :22:33.what I do. It's about enjoying it and if you really enjoy it and
:22:33. > :22:37.you're determined and all those things, just have some fun while
:22:37. > :22:44.you're doing it. No sign of retiring yet? No, I'll just fade
:22:44. > :22:48.away slowly. Over the years the show has come up with a number of
:22:48. > :22:52.competitions to recognise the winners in the various horse
:22:52. > :22:57.sections. But this year, for the first time, there are two new
:22:57. > :23:01.supreme championships. One for the ridden horses and one to choose the
:23:01. > :23:08.supreme horse. So the ridden champion winner and the in-hand
:23:08. > :23:13.winner will go head to head for the supreme title. Judging these three
:23:13. > :23:16.prestigious competitions is Mrs Jean Jones of Newtown. This must be
:23:17. > :23:20.an enormous responsibility, but a great honour. Very much so.
:23:20. > :23:24.difficult is it going to be for you to choose a win frer all those
:23:24. > :23:29.different types of horse? It will be difficult, but I'm hoping it
:23:29. > :23:33.won't be too bad. It will be whatever takes my eye. I've usually
:23:33. > :23:38.picked which one. Loads won't agree, but I'll do my best. Good luck.
:23:38. > :23:42.Lovely to speak to you. I'm looking forward to it. A busy moment for
