:00:27. > :00:28.Welcome to the third day of the Royal Welsh Show.

:00:29. > :00:31.There?s always a very special atmosphere

:00:32. > :00:33.at the Show on a Wednesday, and today is no exception.

:00:34. > :00:36.Powerful Welsh horses the Cobs, will dominate the Main Ring.

:00:37. > :00:43.The Dairy Cow competitions reach a climax today

:00:44. > :00:46.when the loveliest of the ladies gets crowned in the Supreme Champion

:00:47. > :00:49.I?ll also be visiting the sheep section to watch the

:00:50. > :00:55.Supreme Pairs Championship as the best of the breeds go head to head.

:00:56. > :00:58.In the pig section they will also have a Supreme Champion

:00:59. > :01:02.But I?ll also enjoy the company of the Young Farmers

:01:03. > :01:05.in an entertaining but educational competition, and meet some of

:01:06. > :01:22.The rabbits are here in their dozens and more.

:01:23. > :01:27.This is Casper, a fine example of the Polish breed.

:01:28. > :01:30.Because of the recent hot weather their fur is not at its best.

:01:31. > :01:32.Like us humans they tend to shed their coats

:01:33. > :01:42.Donna is a primary school teacher from Cardiff and last year she won

:01:43. > :01:46.Best in show at The Royal Welsh. You have had an extremely early start

:01:47. > :01:50.this morning. What have you brought to the show this year? We have

:01:51. > :01:57.brought to red eyed Polish like Casper and my husband has brought

:01:58. > :02:02.two Rex. How much of a problem if the weather? It is causing all sorts

:02:03. > :02:06.of problems which is why we only brought four rabbits because there

:02:07. > :02:11.are only with four that have a coat on them. You have around 80 at home

:02:12. > :02:17.so this is a passion or is it an obsession? Both, I think. What are

:02:18. > :02:23.the judges looking for? They look for the shape of the rabbit and a

:02:24. > :02:27.coat on the rabbit. In this case his colour is white but it has to be

:02:28. > :02:32.brilliant white. The best example of that colour and then you are looking

:02:33. > :02:34.for general overall condition and fitness. Good luck today. Thank you

:02:35. > :02:42.very much. Lovely to see you. In order to judge rabbits,

:02:43. > :02:44.they need to be closely examined. And this handling makes them very

:02:45. > :02:46.suitable pets Donna

:02:47. > :02:49.as a primary school teacher knows that a rabbit is one way to win

:02:50. > :02:53.children?s attention but today it?s the eagle sharp eye of the judge

:02:54. > :02:58.that attends to her furry friends. How did you get on? I am really

:02:59. > :03:05.thrilled. We have done well. Casper came second and he beat his daughter

:03:06. > :03:10.so she was not very happy. Our Rex one of the Rex Challenger came

:03:11. > :03:13.runner-up for the best Rex. Will you be back next year? I always am

:03:14. > :03:18.because I had to win the rabbit section so I am always here.

:03:19. > :03:21.As you may or may not know I, myself, stepped into this ring

:03:22. > :03:25.Although I now know a thing or two I am content today to watch

:03:26. > :03:31.In the ring Mrs VC Mills from Devon is judging the Supreme Pig Champion.

:03:32. > :03:34.Last year this accolade was bestowed upon Lucy Georgiou and family

:03:35. > :03:48.from Narberth in Pembrokeshire with their Saddleback Sow.

:03:49. > :03:55.The Royal Welsh has been our family holiday for 30 years and we started

:03:56. > :04:00.showing the pigs 16 years ago and they have been fab and we never

:04:01. > :04:03.looks back. You had a lot of success last year? We did. Better than we

:04:04. > :04:11.could have wished for because we won the lot. Are all of the family

:04:12. > :04:13.involved in keeping Saddlebacks? There are 14 of us altogether that

:04:14. > :04:19.stayed down in the caravan and everyone loves the pigs. My daughter

:04:20. > :04:26.is seven months and her pig won last year, Doris torments. How have you

:04:27. > :04:32.done this year? We have done OK, this is our young female pig who won

:04:33. > :04:36.at her class. Our little ball got a second so not too bad but nothing

:04:37. > :04:41.compared to last year. Lucy, you did not make it into the championship

:04:42. > :04:47.this year but I hope you can join me at the ringside and talk me through

:04:48. > :04:54.the competition. Is that OK? What is the judge looking for today? What

:04:55. > :04:57.will catch I? In general they are looking for a good breeding pig and

:04:58. > :05:02.a good meet pig. It is a job I would not want to do. You want a pig that

:05:03. > :05:06.is good and strong on its legs and can move easily. Do you think you

:05:07. > :05:12.will ever win the supreme champion again? You can only hope. I was so

:05:13. > :05:18.excited to win at that time. It is a real fantastic thing to win. I have

:05:19. > :05:22.happy I have if I get it again it will be fantastic but that is

:05:23. > :05:29.something for the future. This year the supreme champion paid is a

:05:30. > :05:34.British lop. It is owned by last year's runner-up, Catherine Nichols.

:05:35. > :05:41.Last year you were the runner-up in this year the supreme pig Champion.

:05:42. > :05:46.How does it feel? I am very happy. Excited as well? Yes. You must be.

:05:47. > :05:49.Dad, I want to get an idea of how proud you are feeling? It is

:05:50. > :05:55.brilliant, absolutely brilliant, I am chuffed for the whole family. It

:05:56. > :06:00.is great, really great. You are the youngest supreme champion I had ever

:06:01. > :06:00.come across and probably the most deserving. Congratulations. Thank

:06:01. > :06:09.you. The modern, improved Welsh Pig can

:06:10. > :06:11.be traced back to a white lop-eared breed kept in

:06:12. > :06:14.Wales for as long as records exist. Welsh Pigs prospered greatly

:06:15. > :06:20.after the Second World War when nearly everyone

:06:21. > :06:22.in the country would keep one or two These days,

:06:23. > :06:25.the Welsh Pigs are protected Here

:06:26. > :06:35.in the Food Hall there is something Mouth-watering, yes, and, from

:06:36. > :06:39.an economical point of view, very Here, amongst the cheese, the wine,

:06:40. > :06:43.the meat and the preserves there is a new company this year marketing

:06:44. > :06:45.chocolate treats. Alana Spencer is from Llanon

:06:46. > :06:47.near Aberystwyth and has succeeded in turning

:06:48. > :06:51.a strong interest into a business. From a young age her passion

:06:52. > :07:04.was chocolate and we went to I started my business because my mum

:07:05. > :07:08.brought me a -- bought me a chocolate book when I was 13 years

:07:09. > :07:11.old and I taught myself how to make chocolates. It all went from there

:07:12. > :07:16.so I learned how to make Artisan fresh cream truffles and I did some

:07:17. > :07:20.really funky flavours and then it progressed into other things. I had

:07:21. > :07:29.already been making cakes because from the age of 16 I was selling

:07:30. > :07:36.cakes and they were going well so wide door I would try and make some

:07:37. > :07:40.cakes. We have six products today, chocolate brownies, cr?me br?l?e

:07:41. > :07:45.Brownies, peanut butter fudge cake, salted caramel slice and rocky road

:07:46. > :07:54.and sticky toffee flapjacks. I absolutely love chocolate. Who

:07:55. > :07:57.doesn't love chocolate? It is lovely when you give someone a product and

:07:58. > :08:03.you can see the pleasure they get from eating the products. From the

:08:04. > :08:08.create -- from the heat of the kitchen to the heat of the show, how

:08:09. > :08:13.is it going? It is going really well. Despite the hate we are doing

:08:14. > :08:16.really well. You young entrepreneur and you have learned really quickly

:08:17. > :08:22.because you have sold to Heston Blumenthal. He has great taste and

:08:23. > :08:24.we all know that so good luck to you. I hope it goes from strength to

:08:25. > :08:26.strength. They say that the secret

:08:27. > :08:29.of good breeding is to ensure that both parents are top notchers,

:08:30. > :08:32.the best that they can be, and this next competition

:08:33. > :08:34.in the sheep ring pays tribute to the best pair of sheep, one male

:08:35. > :08:38.and one female from the same breed. The man that has had the tough

:08:39. > :08:41.choice of deciding which male and which female to put forward is Ron

:08:42. > :08:57.King, judge of the Kerry Hill Breed Ron, how did the judging go on

:08:58. > :09:02.Monday? It is a great honour to be asked, isn't it? Very well. It is an

:09:03. > :09:07.incredible honour. The Royal Welsh show is the pinnacle of any judge to

:09:08. > :09:11.be asked to judge and it was particularly good on Monday because

:09:12. > :09:14.we had such good weather and the classes were extremely strong. It is

:09:15. > :09:18.nearly time for the competition itself so will you join me at the

:09:19. > :09:27.ringside to talk me through it? I will do. Let's go.

:09:28. > :09:36.The stage is set and it is a magnificent sight. How do they split

:09:37. > :09:39.this competition? It is split into two sections, the accredited and the

:09:40. > :09:44.nonaccredited. They are kept separate and then they draw a short

:09:45. > :09:52.list from each section and pick the champion from each section and bring

:09:53. > :09:56.them all together. The judge, Mike Adams from Gloucestershire, has

:09:57. > :10:01.chosen his sixth front runner players from the nonaccredited side,

:10:02. > :10:05.the Jacobs, the South Downs and the speckled face. The accredited,

:10:06. > :10:11.Charolais, blue textiles and the suffix. Which pair will the judge

:10:12. > :10:16.choose as supreme champions? Who would you pick out your winning

:10:17. > :10:27.pair? I would be tempted to save the Suffolks. The south downs of this

:10:28. > :10:38.year winners. They were bred by Kimberley from East Sussex. These

:10:39. > :10:41.suffix Southdown 's have taken it. The whole competition.

:10:42. > :10:46.Congratulations. Did you feel you had got it? I was really surprised,

:10:47. > :10:48.it was fantastic. We have had reserved before but never won so we

:10:49. > :10:52.are very happy. Rachael will find out which dairy

:10:53. > :10:56.cow will be crowned Supreme Champion and I will take a closer look at the

:10:57. > :11:06.handicrafts as well as the horses. Young Farmers know

:11:07. > :11:08.a thing or two about conveying often difficult messages in a direct

:11:09. > :11:10.and understandable manner which With 12 clubs competing,

:11:11. > :11:26.the Emergency Services are given This competition is all about using

:11:27. > :11:30.your wheelbarrow to depict an emergency disservice -- emergency

:11:31. > :11:40.services display. Extra clubs are a very young team. Kayleigh, at the

:11:41. > :11:43.tender age of 18, you are the chairperson. How does it feel? I am

:11:44. > :11:48.one of the oldest members of the club. It is only a small club so I

:11:49. > :11:53.had to step up and do it. Everyone is having a good laugh but this has

:11:54. > :11:56.a serious message, doesn't it? Yes, we are commending the emergency

:11:57. > :12:01.services and showing people the side-effects of drink driving and

:12:02. > :12:16.driving at speed. It is a lot of fun but the message behind it is quite

:12:17. > :12:19.serious. How many members are there? There are 20 in the club,

:12:20. > :12:23.ranging from about 12 to the oldest is about 22 or 23, so we are quite a

:12:24. > :12:25.young club but we are active and we love getting involved in everything.

:12:26. > :12:27.What was your inspiration for writing the script? We are a small

:12:28. > :12:30.community in a rural area and a drink-driving can be an issue and we

:12:31. > :12:32.know people who have suffered from accidents and things so I wanted to

:12:33. > :13:01.make a serious message. Well-deserved applause for their

:13:02. > :13:06.sobering defection -- depiction of the horror caused by drink-driving.

:13:07. > :13:13.The judges were impressed and they are awarded 703 and her team the

:13:14. > :13:17.first prize. Were you pleased with your performance? Yes, we performed

:13:18. > :13:20.as well as we could so it was good. I think everyone appreciated and you

:13:21. > :13:23.look spectacular to us. Congratulations.

:13:24. > :13:26.One of the most majestic sections at the Royal Welsh Show is

:13:27. > :13:31.This year, the Prince of Wales Cup for the best Cob exhibit is being

:13:32. > :13:39.given for the 90th time, and so everyone wants a piece of the prize.

:13:40. > :13:42.One exhibitor who is competing in five Cob classes is Elgan Evans

:13:43. > :13:46.with his Eglwysbach Stud from Llanwrda in Carmarthenshire.

:13:47. > :13:54.His biggest hope is his four-year-old homebred Mare,

:13:55. > :14:08.She has won Youngstock Champion here before.

:14:09. > :14:18.How did you get on? Yesterday, I was hit with a two-year-old filly. I did

:14:19. > :14:25.well. Today is the big day. Today is copter, today is the day everybody

:14:26. > :14:29.comes to the show for. The mayors in the stallions, it is a big day for

:14:30. > :14:38.me because I have got a mayor in there. -- a horse in there. You have

:14:39. > :14:43.one in here. Yes, Eglwysbach Charisma. She is two years old,

:14:44. > :14:50.she's got a good chance, she's looking well, and we will see what

:14:51. > :14:57.happens. And you will be taking her cult with her. Yes, he will be in

:14:58. > :14:58.there. And he will be judged as well, so we will be watching

:14:59. > :15:20.closely. In a class of 17, Eglwysbach

:15:21. > :15:27.Charisma received fourth prize. It was hot work in the Main Ring, but

:15:28. > :15:34.worth it? Yes. 17 in the class, and she came fourth, so I am pleased.

:15:35. > :15:38.You must be delighted! What's next? I will take to the next class, and

:15:39. > :15:41.hopefully we will win something again. Well, good luck, we will be

:15:42. > :15:57.watching. Fantastic! Mum came forth and this

:15:58. > :16:03.little one came first! Did well. First show ever, and first prize.

:16:04. > :16:09.Star of the future. You'll have to think of a good name for him now. I

:16:10. > :16:22.will, I hope a good future for Kim. Well done, hope to see you again.

:16:23. > :16:32.And later, we will be watching the cop classes and Best in show. Who

:16:33. > :16:37.will take the title this year in an award that has traditionally been

:16:38. > :16:56.dominated by the black and white hole Steyn 's? It is showtime. The

:16:57. > :17:05.Ferrari of the show. Big day yesterday. They've all done well.

:17:06. > :17:09.They've done well, today is the highlight. You are experienced,

:17:10. > :17:15.you've judged in Australia, New Zealand. What are you looking for in

:17:16. > :17:25.a champion? It is the same, regardless of the colour of the cow,

:17:26. > :17:30.I'm looking for a balanced cow. Just a good balanced dairy cow. We have

:17:31. > :17:36.watched them all now, we've seen an amazing standard of dairy cow. I

:17:37. > :17:40.think so, with all the breeds, they are all getting better, and it is so

:17:41. > :17:47.good to see all the breeds being represented well. In this line-up,

:17:48. > :17:52.they are all Welsh champions. Yes, owned by Welsh breeders, which is a

:17:53. > :17:56.credit, because this show is getting prestigious, and we get all the best

:17:57. > :18:02.cows from England and Scotland, they all want to win, so very happy to

:18:03. > :18:07.seal the Welsh cows winning today. This is a nail-biting finish, it?

:18:08. > :18:12.This is brilliant. I'm nervous myself and I'm not even showing!

:18:13. > :18:21.Never has there been such a close finish. There is nothing to split

:18:22. > :18:29.these two. Here he goes... He is going for the Holstein! Yes!

:18:30. > :18:33.Congratulations. Well, that was a joy to watch that competition, thank

:18:34. > :18:39.you for joining me. That was nerve wracking, and for someone who's got

:18:40. > :18:44.a passion for cows, that was a joy to watch and a privilege to be

:18:45. > :18:49.here. She has done it again! She's been better than I am! My heart

:18:50. > :18:55.can't put up with this any longer. An emotional moment. Especially,

:18:56. > :18:59.yes. To win the Best of the show, he is judged around the world, and

:19:00. > :19:04.there is stiff competition, she had to be on top of her game today.

:19:05. > :19:09.Glowing praise for her, she's an amazing cow. You could tell

:19:10. > :19:17.yesterday and today, she wanted to win. She glided around the ring. She

:19:18. > :19:23.did her best. Your heart is going? Yes, I can ease off a bit now!

:19:24. > :19:25.There is such a rich and varied display here in the handicraft

:19:26. > :19:29.A number of talented people have invested time

:19:30. > :19:42.It is often skills like these that are passed down

:19:43. > :19:52.The Hughes family from Ruthin in North Wales are no exception.

:19:53. > :19:55.Three sisters who are competing here this year are Mared, Alaw and Lois,

:19:56. > :20:01.and they've had the help of their grandmother to get here today.

:20:02. > :20:16.You must be proud. I am. What competitions did you enter? Mask

:20:17. > :20:24.comp and jewellery. I entered the jewellery, and cross stitch. It's

:20:25. > :20:27.nice that you can all do it together. There's one little member

:20:28. > :20:37.of this flock we haven't talked to yet. We will see how you got on now.

:20:38. > :20:47.When I say flock, here it is. Meet Gethin the sheep. How did you make

:20:48. > :20:52.on? I got egg boxes for the belly, plastic for the head, toilet paper

:20:53. > :20:57.choose for the legs. He is fantastic and the judges must have thought so,

:20:58. > :21:04.too, because you came second. And I can only imagine the mess at home.

:21:05. > :21:10.It is a mess! But worth it? They've loved doing things since they were

:21:11. > :21:13.tiny. Then blues started coming in, ripping paper. But they have always

:21:14. > :21:19.loved making things with their hands. These traditional craft and

:21:20. > :21:23.skills are very valuable to everyone and offers an insight into that

:21:24. > :21:28.special understanding between generations in the same family.

:21:29. > :21:30.One of the most quirky and inquisitive animals

:21:31. > :21:35.They are such characters, and I'm here to meet

:21:36. > :21:46.Aeron Edwards has been showing dairy goats at the Royal Welsh Show

:21:47. > :21:51.for 15 years and keeps 20 at his farm near Aberystwyth.

:21:52. > :21:57.He keeps the Anglo-Nubian breed and describes them

:21:58. > :22:13.Yes, they are highly strung, they are their own person. The kids are

:22:14. > :22:18.quite friendly. They are different. Just full of character, they must be

:22:19. > :22:23.fantastic to work with. A challenge, this is one of the worst breeds to

:22:24. > :22:28.breed to get the milk and everything because of their characters, but I

:22:29. > :22:31.am getting there. So if they are so awkward, why do you choose the

:22:32. > :22:38.Anglo-Nubian as the breed of Troy 's? I do know, I've got to have a

:22:39. > :22:44.challenge in life. You have any colour with these, it was just

:22:45. > :22:50.potluck. If it clicks with the right to mail, you're there, if you're

:22:51. > :23:01.not, you are set back so I tried to be careful when I buy in the males.

:23:02. > :23:05.I look at the bloodlines, because the females are very important. I've

:23:06. > :23:12.been watching you compete, how did you get on? Very good. One of my

:23:13. > :23:18.goats won the class. Selina was third. Another was fifth. What are

:23:19. > :23:23.your plans for the future? Would you be returning to The Royal Welsh?

:23:24. > :23:27.Definitely returning next year, hopefully. Well, I look forward to

:23:28. > :23:31.catching up with you then. There are many traditional pig

:23:32. > :23:33.breeds in the UK as well as the Welsh Pig - the Saddleback,

:23:34. > :23:37.Tamworth and Gloucester Old Spot They are known

:23:38. > :23:43.for their excellent meat qualities, and are often seen in the

:23:44. > :23:46.Farmers Market area of the Royal We have reached the highlight

:23:47. > :23:50.of the day for me, the Cob Stallion Classes and of course,

:23:51. > :23:53.the overall Cob Championship. The George Prince of Wales Cup is

:23:54. > :23:56.being given to the winner for the 90th time this year, but

:23:57. > :24:22.what everyone wants to know is, who Already we have some winners. Mrs

:24:23. > :24:32.P.M.Owen is giving out the prizes. In the breed mayor, eight years and

:24:33. > :24:37.over, it went to the Jones family. They went head-to-head with overall

:24:38. > :24:46.section 80. Again it went to the same family. Then over to the boys.

:24:47. > :24:48.Coming up top was this horse and by Simon Bigley.

:24:49. > :24:51.Now joining me is Owen Griffiths, a pharmacist by trade but a Welsh Cob

:24:52. > :24:53.breeder, of the Ilar stud, Llanilar, Aberystwyth, by conviction.
