:00:23. > :00:26.The 95th Royal Welsh Show is drawing to a close for another year
:00:27. > :00:31.and Radnorshire the host county, can be proud of a very successful Show.
:00:32. > :00:35.But before then we have plenty of action for you including
:00:36. > :00:37.the huge title of Supreme Horse Championship at the Royal Welsh
:00:38. > :00:43.Show, and I will be catching up with a very dear four legged friend.
:00:44. > :00:47.I?ll be keeping an eye on the Show?s future breeders in the Cattle Ring
:00:48. > :00:49.as the Young Handlers take to the stage with
:00:50. > :00:52.their favourite beef animals, and we?ll bring you the winner
:00:53. > :00:59.And I?ll be on the water - if not in it -
:01:00. > :01:03.in the Country Pursuits area as well as cheering Wales on in a brand new
:01:04. > :01:18.competition which sees them taking on the French in the shearing shed.
:01:19. > :01:21.Here in the horse village I am about to meet up with a very dear
:01:22. > :01:25.four legged friend, a section D mare called Ffawydden or as I used
:01:26. > :01:28.to call her Fowie. My father bought me this mare about 13 years ago.
:01:29. > :01:36.I competed, rode, looked after her for three years and
:01:37. > :01:40.we then sold her on to David Lloyd, a solicitor from Llandrindod Wells.
:01:41. > :02:03.Hello, old friend. Do you remember me? Know. Maybe. I am sure she does.
:02:04. > :02:09.It is fantastic to see her again. You are doing a fantastic job
:02:10. > :02:13.grooming her, she looks wonderful. She is a lovely and bright colour.
:02:14. > :02:19.How did you come to start riding for David? I had heard to get fit and
:02:20. > :02:23.write for The Royal Welsh in the main ring seven years ago. I took to
:02:24. > :02:29.the show and we did her class and she has never gone home. It is
:02:30. > :02:32.fantastic to see her. I remember feeling when I was here and getting
:02:33. > :02:37.ready to go into the ring so I know you have a lot to do. I do not want
:02:38. > :02:49.to tear myself away. I will you get on with it. Thank you very much. I
:02:50. > :02:54.am here ring side with her new owners. I'm glad she is in such good
:02:55. > :02:59.hands. What classes she competing in the? She will be competing against
:03:00. > :03:01.the larger horses. It is difficult to say what the chances are. She was
:03:02. > :03:04.fifth overall last year for I am to say what the chances are. She was
:03:05. > :03:09.fifth overall last year for slightly optimistic. What other judges
:03:10. > :03:20.looking for? It is important to get a clear round but they also look at
:03:21. > :03:26.the style of jump. David and Chloe, three refusals and it was not
:03:27. > :03:29.Fowie's day-to-day. How do you feel? Disappointed. But it shows you how
:03:30. > :03:34.to be philosophical about these things. Like all of us you have good
:03:35. > :03:37.days and bad days. Chloe you did a good job and did her proud. It is
:03:38. > :03:48.wonderful to see how she has developed and it was lovely to see
:03:49. > :03:51.you, old friend. The forestry area in the showground has been
:03:52. > :03:55.traditionally associated with pole climbing and axeman but this year it
:03:56. > :03:59.is also highlighting the devastating effects of Larch disease.
:04:00. > :04:02.And joining me now is John Browne who is one of the people in charge
:04:03. > :04:05.of forest regulation and tree health for Natural Resources Wales.
:04:06. > :04:11.There is a lot more planting going on in Wales now, isn't there a? It
:04:12. > :04:16.is on the increase. We have planted a lot of trees and these clear areas
:04:17. > :04:19.for large have to be replanted. We planted millions of transplants to
:04:20. > :04:26.replace the trees that have been found. There are 6 million trees
:04:27. > :04:32.affected. We have cleared 2000 hectares and that is a lot of trees
:04:33. > :04:35.and those areas get replanted and that is why we have the replanting
:04:36. > :04:40.programme. We have had huge interest in the story at the show people want
:04:41. > :04:45.to know why the areas have been cleared on what impact is. It is of
:04:46. > :04:45.great interest to people and we are here to
:04:46. > :04:53.great interest to people and we explain why it is the case. We have
:04:54. > :04:57.just planted a tree here which was fantastic. Why is it important for
:04:58. > :05:01.us to do that. We planted a native hornbeam that will grow up and
:05:02. > :05:05.replace the large tree that is currently on the edge of that part
:05:06. > :05:08.of the ground. It will be great for people in the future and it can
:05:09. > :05:15.enjoy the shade. It is a lovely tree as well. It is a butyl position and
:05:16. > :05:22.I was very proud to be part of that. Thank you for your help. Not at all.
:05:23. > :05:24.There are four sections within the Welsh breeds.
:05:25. > :05:27.The Section A or the Welsh Mountain Pony is the smallest of Welsh breeds
:05:28. > :05:32.The Section B or the Welsh Pony is a larger riding type with elegant
:05:33. > :05:36.The Section C is a heavier horse and more cob like but compact.
:05:37. > :05:42.And finally the Section D, the Welsh Cob is the largest
:05:43. > :06:01.Around 700 international guests visit the Show
:06:02. > :06:03.in an official role every year and this year is no exception.
:06:04. > :06:06.But there are a group who have literally travelled
:06:07. > :06:10.The Royal Welsh this year welcomes a special delegation from Patagonia,
:06:11. > :06:13.the Welsh colony in Argentina which next year are celebrating 150
:06:14. > :06:26.years since the settlement of the Welsh in Patagonia.
:06:27. > :06:32.You and Lillian both speak Welsh, fluently, and Spanish of course. A
:06:33. > :06:37.bit of English as well. How much Welsh is there in Patagonia? I
:06:38. > :06:45.cannot tell you exactly how much Welsh tears but this time if we do
:06:46. > :06:52.not do something about it we are going to lose it so we are starting
:06:53. > :06:57.to build a new stool -- school with two languages, Spanish and Welsh, in
:06:58. > :07:03.this next spring, in September, spring for us. You have a strong
:07:04. > :07:14.connection with Wales and with farming. Yes, my family since it has
:07:15. > :07:20.lived in Patagonia has been farming. Farming there is quite different to
:07:21. > :07:25.farming in Wales. Lillian, have you enjoyed the show? I enjoyed it so
:07:26. > :07:30.much. It is amazing really, it is so big I could not see a -- everything
:07:31. > :07:34.because we were doing our stand but it is amazing. It was lovely to meet
:07:35. > :07:42.you both. Enjoy the rest of your show.
:07:43. > :07:46.We will catch up with a pet that although slow moving,
:07:47. > :07:49.The talent of tomorrow will shine through
:07:50. > :07:53.And who is the new guy and second in command here at the
:07:54. > :08:05.Now, for my next item I need to get changed.
:08:06. > :08:10.That?s better, because I need a wetsuit where I?m going.
:08:11. > :08:13.Paddle boarding is a relatively new pursuit here at the
:08:14. > :08:16.Kevin Davies from Carmarthen, a keen surfer and canoeist,
:08:17. > :08:25.has been won over by this latest craze on the water
:08:26. > :08:33.OK, what is that? This is a paddle board. It is a sporting craze that
:08:34. > :08:37.has come over from the United States. That will take my weight? It
:08:38. > :08:44.easily will take away to, it takes mine and I am considerably heavier
:08:45. > :08:49.than you. How does it work? Is it like a surfboard? If you were
:08:50. > :08:53.surfing, yes, but on flat water we stand with our feet about shoulder
:08:54. > :09:01.width apart and a handover and we take it from there.
:09:02. > :09:11.I had to tell you, this is a lot easier than I thought it would be.
:09:12. > :09:41.Out on the water. Is it? All right then.
:09:42. > :10:04.Up, up! Oh, my gosh, that is so hard. Look forward. I do not move.
:10:05. > :10:08.You said it would be easy! Hold on. Kevin, that was so much harder than
:10:09. > :10:14.I thought it was going to be. The balance needed on their was
:10:15. > :10:24.incredible. It is really difficult. Step off. Hold on. Thank you very
:10:25. > :10:32.much. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
:10:33. > :10:36.The feathers from the beginning of the week have gone to make room
:10:37. > :10:38.for the fur, and today for the pet section.
:10:39. > :10:40.What makes a pet is a very interesting question, and the
:10:41. > :10:45.choice of pets does seem somehow to say a great deal about the owner!
:10:46. > :10:48.There are all kinds of interesting pets here and some
:10:49. > :10:53.are exotic, strange and even weird, but they are all loved by someone.
:10:54. > :11:02.Fiona Wase from Crossgates, Powys is the secretary of the pet section.
:11:03. > :11:09.What exactly does the Secretary of the pet section do? First of all it
:11:10. > :11:13.is making sure that the entries have come in safely and then it is
:11:14. > :11:16.allocating the various entries as to whether they belong to adults or
:11:17. > :11:22.children and then the different classes that they will go into. In
:11:23. > :11:26.your view, what does make a good pet? A good pet has got to be one
:11:27. > :11:31.that is clearly looked after so it has to be in good condition and
:11:32. > :11:35.healthy. It needs to be easy to handle so, as you can see with this
:11:36. > :11:39.guinea pig, it is not bothered at all and it is obviously a very well
:11:40. > :11:45.loved pet. That is what the judges are looking for? Absolutely. With so
:11:46. > :12:01.many different types of pet the judging process must be difficult.
:12:02. > :12:03.It can be and that is why we have many different classes. We have
:12:04. > :12:05.classes for guinea pigs with long parents moved coats and separate
:12:06. > :12:08.classes for canst us and cats and once there are individual winners it
:12:09. > :12:09.is not so difficult to find the overall winner. There are 68
:12:10. > :12:09.different pets here. The judge, Charlotte Cadwallader,
:12:10. > :12:12.has made her decisions, and the pet owners now are either very
:12:13. > :12:16.happy or maybe a bit disappointed. But I think it's true to say,
:12:17. > :12:19.that the pets themselves are With me now is Owen Williams and his
:12:20. > :12:31.tortoise Rex. Tell me what he makes tell -- tell
:12:32. > :12:38.me why he make such a good pet. He likes to sniff out things. Does he
:12:39. > :12:43.move fast? Very fast. Can a sprint? Yes! He seems to move -- is used to
:12:44. > :12:48.have his eye on that rose that. It is a very splendid Rosa. Our wealth
:12:49. > :12:57.as he downed? He has won three times in a row. He has had four years of
:12:58. > :13:02.winning. He is obviously a very special taught us. Congratulations
:13:03. > :13:09.to both of you. You had better sprint off home now.
:13:10. > :13:12.The Shire is the largest horse in the horse world.
:13:13. > :13:15.In the dark ages the Shire was used as a steed to carry knights
:13:16. > :13:19.and all the heavy armour into battle before retiring to farm work.
:13:20. > :13:27.It was present in both World Wars being an integral part.
:13:28. > :13:29.The talent of tomorrow can be spotted
:13:30. > :13:32.in our next competition, because it is nearly all about the handler.
:13:33. > :13:40.When taking part in class of numerous animals,
:13:41. > :13:45.it's up to the handler to make sure that they show off the animal to
:13:46. > :13:48.its full potential so that the judge can see the animal's best side.
:13:49. > :13:57.Washing, grooming and brushing all adds to
:13:58. > :14:01.the look, but keeping control and handling in the ring does ask
:14:02. > :14:10.One who knows what the competitors are going through at the moment is
:14:11. > :14:13.Lin Pidsley from Honiton in Devon, who although a past winner at this
:14:14. > :14:22.competition in the Winter Fair, is passed the age for competing
:14:23. > :14:25.competition in the Winter Fair, is past the age for competing
:14:26. > :14:35.It is about the handler a lot more than the animal. It is about how
:14:36. > :14:39.they are preparing the animal and dressing the animal before they go
:14:40. > :14:43.into the drink -- ring and dressing themselves is really important, you
:14:44. > :14:46.do not want to see someone with the Waco from yesterday and black eyes
:14:47. > :14:50.and back kind of thing, it is about looking the part and being the part
:14:51. > :14:54.and then while being in the ring the judges judging you for the whole
:14:55. > :14:59.time. Do we know how many entries they have had? Over 40 entries so
:15:00. > :15:02.they have split the classes into four different age groups depending
:15:03. > :15:09.on where it spits evenly so there are eight or ten in each class and
:15:10. > :15:12.then three exhibitors are picked from each class to go into the final
:15:13. > :15:21.and that is when the pressure is on, if you like. This is the final, just
:15:22. > :15:28.ten young handlers, the pressure is on. Quite. They have a chance now to
:15:29. > :15:35.go back out to the lines, re-dress, freshen themselves up, and come back
:15:36. > :15:42.in. One foot wrong, it could lose them the competition. Well, the
:15:43. > :15:49.judge has given his reasons, and we have our winners. That is the young
:15:50. > :15:58.lady on the end. Fantastic! It was her birthday yesterday, so she will
:15:59. > :16:04.be truly celebrating. Congratulations, well done. What's
:16:05. > :16:12.your name? Sophie, I'm from Scotland. A long way to come, has it
:16:13. > :16:17.been worth it? It has. It's been my birthday yesterday as well, so it is
:16:18. > :16:20.great. What a great present! From 40, you are this year's beef handler
:16:21. > :16:28.Champion, well done. Thank you. Still to come, with a magnificent
:16:29. > :16:31.turnout of sheep at the show this year, we'll catch up with the winner
:16:32. > :16:35.of the Champion of Champions. And the horse championships, which
:16:36. > :16:38.horse will be awarded the best of Add national pride to that mix, and
:16:39. > :16:52.you have a unique combination that The team is ready to give it their
:16:53. > :17:22.all, the teams are... So, gentlemen, how would you rate
:17:23. > :17:26.the shearing at The Royal Welsh show? Probably one of the best show
:17:27. > :17:32.in the world, it is a very good show. Top shearers, it is great.
:17:33. > :17:39.What would it mean for you to win here today? If we win here today, it
:17:40. > :17:46.is a Rhyl chance, it is a dream. We won last year in France. Today is
:17:47. > :17:50.not the same. Gentlemen, in the spirit of a good competition, I wish
:17:51. > :17:59.you all the best. Thank you. Thank you. So, boys, have you seen this
:18:00. > :18:02.French team in action? Yes, we went to France last Thursday night. We
:18:03. > :18:07.competed against them over the weekend, and they are a very good
:18:08. > :18:15.team. So, you've analyse the way they do things, any hidden tactics
:18:16. > :18:23.to get a one over on them? Last weekend was their advantage, because
:18:24. > :18:27.now we have home advantage today. The competition is about to start.
:18:28. > :18:30.This crowd is looking for a fierce competition. We are secretly hoping
:18:31. > :19:18.for a home win. The winners of the Wales versus
:19:19. > :19:20.France... Are Wales! It is a great Welsh win, but, oh, boy, could it
:19:21. > :19:27.have been any closer? Successful Shows need talented
:19:28. > :19:31.people organising them. Last year, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society
:19:32. > :19:35.appointed Steve Hughson as its new Chief Executive. Shortly after this,
:19:36. > :19:39.a brand new role was appointed, the Assistant Chief Executive post,
:19:40. > :19:58.which went to Aled Jones. Well, lovely to meet you, you are a
:19:59. > :20:03.farmer 's son. And an agricultural value and surveyor, what made this
:20:04. > :20:08.role is so appealing? Well, like all farmers sons, I've been brought up
:20:09. > :20:11.here, and captured by the imagination of the place and when
:20:12. > :20:17.the opportunity presented itself, I couldn't let it go, I was thrilled
:20:18. > :20:22.to give this position, the someday my age, to hold this position. This
:20:23. > :20:27.is young blood in at the top of the board. The board have put their
:20:28. > :20:32.faith in youth, I guess. Mentioning youth, how would you like to see the
:20:33. > :20:37.society developing? There are huge opportunities. It is a hugely
:20:38. > :20:40.successful event. There is huge opportunity to drive the society
:20:41. > :20:45.forward, making use of the facilities outside as well. It is an
:20:46. > :20:51.exciting time. The show was in had hands. Well done in the job and I
:20:52. > :20:57.hope you continue to enjoy it. Thank you, that's brilliant.
:20:58. > :21:00.The Irish Draught was primarily used for farm use in the olden days, and
:21:01. > :21:06.Today, they are popularly used for crossing with thoroughbreds
:21:07. > :21:09.and warm bloods, and excel in eventing and show jumping.
:21:10. > :21:12.At the Show, this breed can be seen in the Hunter Class,
:21:13. > :21:15.With 45 different breeds, and more than 3,000 sheep entered
:21:16. > :21:20.300 more than last year, the Royal Welsh Show can boast that
:21:21. > :21:23.it is probably the most important sheep event in the world!
:21:24. > :21:25.That is why the Champion of Champions competition,
:21:26. > :21:37.without doubt, carries a great deal of weight in the sheep world.
:21:38. > :21:39.This is one of the big highlights of the week,
:21:40. > :21:44.and keeping me company by the ring is Brian Davies from Brecon.
:21:45. > :21:53.You yourself have an impressive show record. It is my 60th year here. I
:21:54. > :22:01.started when I was eight. I think I've been in this rink at every year
:22:02. > :22:05.since about them. Only twice when there was foot and mouth, and then
:22:06. > :22:11.twice when I had the honour of judging the inter-breed cows.
:22:12. > :22:23.We have had a free decisions now, can you bring us up-to-date? Earlier
:22:24. > :22:27.on, we saw the Hill Champion, won by the farmer in sunny bridge. The
:22:28. > :22:36.continentals, that was won by Adrian Davies. And then we have just seen
:22:37. > :22:44.the lowland breeds judged, that was won by the Suffolk, a new breeder
:22:45. > :22:47.from Aberystwyth. So, we can safely say that a Welshman is going to win
:22:48. > :22:52.this year, but I will ask you to pick your winner. Personally, I
:22:53. > :22:57.think the Charlotte year is the best. We will have the result any
:22:58. > :23:13.minute now. Well, you're right, it has gone your
:23:14. > :23:16.way. Excellent. You can't tell until you've handled them yourself, but
:23:17. > :23:31.then I'd agree on looks with the judge. And the runner-up is an
:23:32. > :23:33.exceptionally good RAM. Congratulations to Adrian Davies.
:23:34. > :23:40.What a fantastic day for the whole family. Amazing! Remarkable
:23:41. > :23:42.achievement, enjoy the celebrations. You've got to because it might not
:23:43. > :23:46.happen again. Yesterday, we saw Supermodel take
:23:47. > :23:48.the Prince of Wales Cup Today, we see all champions
:23:49. > :23:53.of the Welsh horses, the section A, B, C and D, compete
:23:54. > :24:16.for the Tom Sprightly Cup for the Continuing her winning streak, the
:24:17. > :24:27.winner was Supermodel. Joining me as Mia Warman. In the Main Ring, it is
:24:28. > :24:32.building up. So many competitions. Seven in I sources said today. It is
:24:33. > :24:41.anyone's. I'd love to be in the ring. I'd love to take all of these
:24:42. > :24:46.horses home. How do you choose? The judge has made his decision. And it
:24:47. > :24:54.is a friend of yours. Very good friend of mine, Wyn Morris, from
:24:55. > :25:01.Pembrokeshire. Next, The Royal Welsh in hand championship with the award
:25:02. > :25:11.going to David Oliver. Guardsmen also went on to win the supreme in
:25:12. > :25:16.hand. Now the Supreme Horse Championship, the best of the best.
:25:17. > :25:23.Cr?me de la cr?me. Take us through the categories. So, the working
:25:24. > :25:31.Hunter, the supreme, the section D, the reserve, the champion of the
:25:32. > :25:40.driving, and then the sections seek halt -- section C. What does winning
:25:41. > :25:44.this title mean to an exhibitor and breeder? The world. Imagine if you'd
:25:45. > :25:52.read your animal, brought it and it brings home the cup. It's nothing
:25:53. > :26:01.better. I wish I was in there myself. We have a decision. The
:26:02. > :26:07.winner is the written horse. Yes, a friend of mine, Wyn Morris.
:26:08. > :26:13.Fantastic. Wonderful. There will be parties in Pembrokeshire tonight. I
:26:14. > :26:18.should think so! We've been talking up parties in Pembrokeshire,
:26:19. > :26:23.congratulations. You are not running, you are watching. I'm very
