0:01:01 > 0:01:04We will also find out what it takes to make a prize pigeon

0:01:04 > 0:01:05the best of the bantams

0:01:05 > 0:01:07and a superhero element, to get a whole new aspect

0:01:07 > 0:01:08on the show, Cerys Matthews.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10The things I do, my goodness.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13But I have come up here today and I have got

0:01:13 > 0:01:15the best view in the whole of the Royal Welsh show.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18And the Royal Welsh Show wouldn't be the same without the one

0:01:18 > 0:01:19and only Gareth Wyn Jones.

0:01:19 > 0:01:20Can you do me later?

0:01:20 > 0:01:24I would love to.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27I am going to meet up with old friends in the sheep sheds

0:01:27 > 0:01:31and see what entertainments they have got in the main room.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34You can keep up-to-date with all of the show's action or let

0:01:43 > 0:01:48Thank you.

0:01:48 > 0:01:49Good luck!

0:01:49 > 0:01:52This is the biggest agricultural show in Europe and competing

0:01:52 > 0:01:56here is something everyone aspires to but if you think you have to be

0:01:56 > 0:01:58a farmer with generations of experience to be allowed

0:01:58 > 0:02:00to compete here, you would be wrong.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04In fact, you don't even need to live in the country.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Wales' capital city is perhaps not a place you would expect to find

0:02:09 > 0:02:11a Royal Welsh winner.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15But there is a man who lives here whose dedication and passion

0:02:15 > 0:02:18to the animals he keeps in his garden has given him

0:02:18 > 0:02:20a reputation as a real high-flyer.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Look at this.

0:02:27 > 0:02:28Pigeon paradise.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Yes, it is, really.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33They are magnificent birds when you see them

0:02:33 > 0:02:34up close, aren't they?

0:02:34 > 0:02:36His name is Ronnie.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39When did you start keeping pigeons?

0:02:39 > 0:02:43I must have been 13, 12 or 13.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46And what was it that inspired you?

0:02:46 > 0:02:48There was nothing else to do.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52Didn't have a computer or the telly or a phone.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56As kids, we had to find something else to do.

0:02:56 > 0:03:01Paul started out keeping racing pigeons and, later,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03he switched to breeding pigeons to show.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06How different is he from a racing pigeon?

0:03:06 > 0:03:09He is a lot bigger and he's a lot prettier.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12It is a beauty contest.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Do you feel, I don't know, somewhat of an outsider

0:03:16 > 0:03:21going to very much an agricultural show, or are you welcomed

0:03:21 > 0:03:23in along with everyone else?

0:03:23 > 0:03:24You are just welcomed in.

0:03:24 > 0:03:25You turn up and take a chance.

0:03:25 > 0:03:3020 miles away, in a small town in the Valleys, live Brian Evans,

0:03:30 > 0:03:3320 miles away, in a small town in the Valleys, lives Brian Evans,

0:03:33 > 0:03:35who is also a Royal Welsh winner, with his pigs.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39A friend of mine asked me to come and help him about 30 odd years ago.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41I came up and I have been here ever since.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43So you are now the Mountain Ash pig man.

0:03:43 > 0:03:53If you would like to call me that, yes.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55He breeds and raises Welsh pigs in a little piggery

0:03:55 > 0:03:56on the edge of town.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00What was it about them that hooked you?

0:04:00 > 0:04:05I don't know,

0:04:05 > 0:04:08I don't know, I just wanted to know more about them.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11My friend told me they were good pigs and I said we will see how good

0:04:11 > 0:04:13they are when we start showing them.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16Even an arson attack didn't put a stop to their treasured hobby.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Burned this building down to the ground.

0:04:18 > 0:04:19This one?

0:04:19 > 0:04:20Yes, this one.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Luckily, the pigs were out at the top end.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Hopefully, you two beautiful girls, far too intent on eating

0:04:24 > 0:04:28at the moment, will bring home the bacon.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38We will find out how Paul and Brian get on a little bit later on.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41But as well as giving people the opportunity to compete

0:04:41 > 0:04:44against the world's best, the show has another important role.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47To promote farming and animals and Caryl Hughes is one

0:04:47 > 0:04:50of the Young Ambassadors of the show.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Looking very perky this morning.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Not bad for Tuesday morning!

0:04:55 > 0:04:58So tell me about the Ambassador's role, what you do?

0:04:58 > 0:05:01So there is a Young Ambassador's scheme that runs every year,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03there are 12 of us this year.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07Young people passionate about farming, all different

0:05:07 > 0:05:10backgrounds and we all love the sheep industry and we go around

0:05:10 > 0:05:13and discuss and learn from people in the industry.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15You are an upland farmer.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20That is a tough life and a lot of young people don't want to stay

0:05:20 > 0:05:23in it because they just don't see a future in it.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27At the moment, it is quite a scary moment, with Brexit,

0:05:27 > 0:05:33up in the Valleys in Wales, it is very dependent on the single

0:05:33 > 0:05:36upland Valleys in Wales, it is very dependent on the single

0:05:36 > 0:05:39farm payments and things like that so it is not looking too bright

0:05:39 > 0:05:40but obviously with every change, opportunity arises.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43I am keen and passionate, I'm staying at home and farming

0:05:43 > 0:05:46for the family and I'm certain there is a future in farming,

0:05:46 > 0:05:47I wouldn't do it otherwise.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52But it's going to be interesting, to say the least.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54And do you think it is really important, shows like this,

0:05:54 > 0:06:00that people not just from farming backgrounds but from all over

0:06:00 > 0:06:03but from all over the country, come and talk to people

0:06:03 > 0:06:04like you and see wonderful

0:06:04 > 0:06:05animals like this?

0:06:05 > 0:06:07This is our chance to make sure everyone understands

0:06:07 > 0:06:09and knows what we are doing.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Thank you very much, good luck with the rest of the show.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15You will be very pleased to hear we are now going to head

0:06:15 > 0:06:17to the sheep sheds with the lovely Gareth Wyn Jones.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20They say there are three times as many sheep as people in Wales.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23As a sheep farmer, I don't know how true that is,

0:06:23 > 0:06:26but what I can tell you is there's more than 3,000 sheep

0:06:26 > 0:06:30here at the Royal Welsh Show.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Their's a lot of rivalry in the show and Owain and Lowri,

0:06:40 > 0:06:43There's a lot of rivalry in the show and Owain and Lowri,

0:06:43 > 0:06:52you are here both showing sheep

0:06:52 > 0:06:55you're a couple and competing

0:06:55 > 0:06:57against each other.

0:06:57 > 0:06:58If Lowri wins, will you still be talking?

0:06:58 > 0:07:04I will.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06It will be the other way round.

0:07:06 > 0:07:07I am very competitive.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Lowri was out after the first judging round.

0:07:09 > 0:07:10Where is the other half?

0:07:10 > 0:07:11He has been put forward.

0:07:11 > 0:07:12What you mean?

0:07:12 > 0:07:13What do you mean?

0:07:13 > 0:07:14He has made the cut.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17He has beaten me.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Will he be in the doghouse tonight?

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Yes.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26In the sheep ring, you would expect to see

0:07:26 > 0:07:27a shepherd and I found one, right here.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Thomas.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31How are things?

0:07:31 > 0:07:33Very good.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37It is really nice to meet somebody young and keeping the same

0:07:37 > 0:07:40breed of sheep as me.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43I try my best.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46This is what I have grown up with and have passion for them.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48What you think of this lad?

0:07:48 > 0:07:50What you think of this lamb?

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Don't mind if I have a look?

0:07:51 > 0:07:56I don't mind, I know what you keep.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58The first thing for me is the mouth.

0:07:58 > 0:07:59Good, square shoulders.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03Nice colours, showing type colours.

0:08:03 > 0:08:04Did well yesterday, I heard.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Second.

0:08:07 > 0:08:15And third with the ewe.

0:08:15 > 0:08:16Second with the ewe lamb.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18The best I have had so far.

0:08:18 > 0:08:19So how many shows in a season?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Between the winter and spring fair, 15 shows.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Every weekend.

0:08:24 > 0:08:25Every weekend in the summer.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27That is a serious commitment.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29It is my annual holiday and I am happy.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31It is so important that these animals to feel at home,

0:08:31 > 0:08:35so I have come to see my old friend Doris, who has been coming

0:08:35 > 0:08:36to the show for years.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38How do you make these animals feel happy?

0:08:38 > 0:08:40How do you make these animals feel at home?

0:08:40 > 0:08:42They are hill breeds, they used to feeding

0:08:42 > 0:08:45on grass in the hills, we bring the hay and a supply

0:08:45 > 0:08:47of water and make them as comfortable as possible

0:08:47 > 0:08:50and it is important to look after the sheep when they are here.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52So you bring your own water, even?

0:08:52 > 0:08:55Yes, because that is what they are used to at home.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Because they can't have grass, we try to make everything

0:08:58 > 0:09:01as it is at home for them.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04I must say, the sheep are looking really well.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07All the best in the show and I will see you very soon.

0:09:07 > 0:09:08Thank you very much.

0:09:11 > 0:09:16Many families have been coming to the Royal Welsh Show four years.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Many families have been coming to the Royal Welsh Show for years.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Kate has been up to Porthmadog to Peter family that use Blue Texels

0:09:22 > 0:09:23Kate has been up to Porthmadog to meet a family that use Blue Texels

0:09:28 > 0:09:31When it comes to the Royal Welsh Show, the Hughes family

0:09:31 > 0:09:39from Porthmadog are big fans.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40Annual holiday.

0:09:40 > 0:09:41All the grandchildren and everything go.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45It is the actual atmosphere of the place.

0:09:45 > 0:09:51And while the family enjoy competing there,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54it is the taking part that means most to them after a devastating

0:09:54 > 0:09:55event that rocked their lives.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59Our son Iwan had a very bad road traffic accident in 2002,

0:09:59 > 0:10:07which left him unable to work on the farm for a number of months.

0:10:07 > 0:10:15Determined to get Iwan well again,

0:10:15 > 0:10:16Arfan and Sian took an unusual

0:10:16 > 0:10:18approach to his rehab, buying in a new breed

0:10:18 > 0:10:20of sheep, the Blue Texel.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Iwan had a lot of pleasure trimming him.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24It progressed from the ram lamb, which, in 2004, went

0:10:24 > 0:10:30to the Royal Welsh Show, it was the first Blue Texel

0:10:30 > 0:10:36in the Royal Welsh,

0:10:36 > 0:10:40prepared by Iwan and shown by Iwan and he won the male champion.

0:10:40 > 0:10:4215 years after his accident, Iwan is now well known

0:10:42 > 0:10:44for his success with the Blue Texels.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47What makes a prizewinner?

0:10:47 > 0:10:55To start off, it is good marking, the haltermark around the face.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59And a nice fleece colour, not too dark, not too white.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01After a quick back and sides, the ram is all

0:11:01 > 0:11:03set to go to the show.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05He just looks fantastic, Iwan, I can't believe that just that tiny

0:11:05 > 0:11:10meticulous amount of trimming and, you know, he is suddenly

0:11:10 > 0:11:16revealed, his beautiful shape, his confirmation,

0:11:16 > 0:11:19it is extraordinary.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23A good half an hour's work.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25It was, bit more than that, actually.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29It was 45 minutes, I was timing you.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Come on, then, let's have a look at you in all your finery.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40He looks magnificent.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43We'll let you know how Iwan gets on, but now let's go

0:11:43 > 0:11:47to the irrepressible Cerys Matthews, who is really going up in the world.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51I have come over to the forestry area and I'm going to catch up

0:11:51 > 0:11:52with some pole climbing.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Three, two, one, go.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04Right, there is no turning back, it is my turn now.

0:12:04 > 0:12:05I can't believe it.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18It's way harder than it looks.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Unbelievable.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28Put it on your bucket list, things to do before you are 50, brilliant.

0:12:29 > 0:12:36So, pole climbing, what got you into it?

0:12:36 > 0:12:39I was invited to a day out here in 1998 and the bug

0:12:39 > 0:12:41bit and that was that.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42What got you going?

0:12:42 > 0:12:42The challenge.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44The challenge.

0:12:45 > 0:12:51And I decided, seeing as I had lost my wife to cancer,

0:12:51 > 0:13:01I collected for Marie Curie, every time I went up a pole.

0:13:02 > 0:13:08And I collected ?42,800.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11I finished collecting when I was 80 and finished pole

0:13:11 > 0:13:15climbing properly last month.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Do you mind me asking how old you are now?

0:13:17 > 0:13:1884.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21So you can still do pole climbing until you are 84,

0:13:21 > 0:13:22do you recommend it?

0:13:22 > 0:13:24If you are fit.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26Why do you do it?

0:13:26 > 0:13:27The challenge.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30You told me earlier it's because you are a nutter.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Well, yes, we are nutters.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43We will join Cerys again if we can get her to come back down to earth.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47Now, over the last couple of days, we have seen how much effort goes

0:13:47 > 0:13:50into getting animals looking their best in the show ring,

0:13:50 > 0:13:54but the show is also the perfect excuse for some humans

0:13:54 > 0:13:57to parade their finery.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59Now, this wonderful collection of fashions belongs

0:13:59 > 0:14:01to Margarette Hughes.

0:14:01 > 0:14:02Margarette, come and join me here.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04These are all your clothes.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06They are, yes.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Tell me a little bit about these glorious outfits.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13This is the history of my life in front of you.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16This lovely outfit which I'm thinking is '60s.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19I was pregnant expecting my second child.

0:14:19 > 0:14:26This is 1970s?

0:14:26 > 0:14:29Definitely, when the midi came back in, we had been up

0:14:29 > 0:14:32here with the minis and we didn't know what to do with the 70s,

0:14:32 > 0:14:33we had midis and maxis.

0:14:33 > 0:14:38Now, the '80s.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41How glamorous.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44And we are going to head over here to the '90s lady,

0:14:44 > 0:14:48our star of the show, if I may say so.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50It's fantastic.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54And let's not forget our naughty noughties.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58You look perfect for the show, is this a sort

0:14:58 > 0:14:59of outfit you approve of?

0:14:59 > 0:15:03If they made me a judge, yes.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06I am basically looking a bit scruffy and have let the side down.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08I have something to suit you.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11It has been lovely to meet you and ladies, thank

0:15:11 > 0:15:14you for bringing such glamour to the show.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17Margarette's outfits span 50 years but, of course,

0:15:17 > 0:15:20the show has been going for 98 and it seems that fashion has been

0:15:20 > 0:15:22important right from the start.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Over the years, fashionable farmers have flocked

0:15:31 > 0:15:34to the Royal Welsh Show.

0:15:34 > 0:15:41In the early years, they were rather rather male dominated affairs

0:15:41 > 0:15:43but by the '20s and '30s, the annual shows were seen

0:15:43 > 0:15:47as a chance for young ladies of a certain class to show

0:15:47 > 0:15:50off their latest fashions.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53By the swinging '60s, the show would host fashion shows

0:15:53 > 0:15:57run by various organisations such as the War Board.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01Today, the show has certain fashion rules that apply to judges,

0:16:01 > 0:16:05stewards, competitors and officials but as for the general public,

0:16:05 > 0:16:10it is safe to say that absolutely anything goes.

0:16:10 > 0:16:11Fashionable farmers?

0:16:11 > 0:16:14Don't encourage him!

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Still to come, Gareth does his bit to keep the crowd entertained

0:16:25 > 0:16:29and Cerys is sharpening up her act.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34Earlier we met Paul from Cardiff who breeds and shows prize-winning

0:16:34 > 0:16:36pigeons and here he is.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38I said prize-winning pigeons.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Oh my goodness, a red card.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43Were you expecting him to win?

0:16:43 > 0:16:45No.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48I have got 13 here.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50How many red cards have you got?

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Just one this year.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56Are you feeling good?

0:16:56 > 0:16:58Cock-a-hoop?

0:16:58 > 0:17:00Yes, that's the way it goes.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04Congratulations, well done.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06Very good red card winner.

0:17:06 > 0:17:07We will catch up with you again soon.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Lovely to see you.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13It's not just pigeons that are shown here.

0:17:13 > 0:17:19It is geese, ducks, and this cockerel, and even eggs.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22And one of the things I love about the show is it doesn't matter

0:17:22 > 0:17:25if you live in the country or in a town, if you're

0:17:25 > 0:17:29an octogenarian or a teenager, you can still compete and walk away

0:17:29 > 0:17:34with one of the top prizes.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41I'm on my way to meet some of the biggest

0:17:41 > 0:17:44winners in recent years.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48But these two are not your run-of-the-mill

0:17:48 > 0:17:50Royal Welsh exhibitors.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53For a start, they don't live on a farm or in the countryside

0:17:53 > 0:17:56and haven't got years and years of experience.

0:17:56 > 0:18:02In fact, neither are old even to vote.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07Yet these brothers have already been ruffling feathers

0:18:07 > 0:18:10in the poultry world.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13What a fantastic collection.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17It's like coming to an exotic bird aviary coming here.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21But for teenage lads, it's quite an unusual thing, isn't it?

0:18:21 > 0:18:22Yeah.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26Did you originally think they were nice things to have around

0:18:26 > 0:18:28and we will have some eggs?

0:18:28 > 0:18:35Yes, a little hobby for us to do and we will have an egg run.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38It wasn't long before the boys progressed from selling eggs

0:18:38 > 0:18:41to producing prize-winning stock.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45I think I have got in my hand quite the most beautiful

0:18:45 > 0:18:48chicken I have ever seen.

0:18:48 > 0:18:57This isn't one of your run-of-the-mill chickens, is it?

0:18:57 > 0:18:58These are the silver seabrights.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01I would just give them first prize if I was judging but presumably

0:19:01 > 0:19:02it's harder than that?

0:19:02 > 0:19:03Yes.

0:19:03 > 0:19:04What does the judge look for?

0:19:04 > 0:19:06The markings.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09It looks like they have been designed by an Art deco artist.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Let's look at this handsome chap.

0:19:12 > 0:19:18A nice grey beak.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24To get them ready for the show, what do you have to do to them?

0:19:24 > 0:19:29I give them a wash with shampoo.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31There's a few other things in the water as well.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32Is that your secret recipe?

0:19:32 > 0:19:38Yes.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41That gives the final shine after drying.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43When did you first go to the Royal Welsh Show?

0:19:43 > 0:19:45Two years ago.

0:19:45 > 0:19:46You really are a beginner.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50That's amazing.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04And I'm now joined by the brothers in the poultry tent and you have

0:20:04 > 0:20:08some quite exciting news.

0:20:08 > 0:20:15Yes, I have won first with my cockerel.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17And we have the best red breed.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19We've had two firsts, two seconds and one third.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22That is brilliant.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25I hope your younger brother has not upstaged you.

0:20:25 > 0:20:30He has this year, yes.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33I had three firsts, four seconds and a third.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36Congratulations, fantastic.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39And now let's go and catch up with Cerys,

0:20:39 > 0:20:42who is at the sharp end of things.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45I'm in the forestry area in the wood chopping to meet the most

0:20:45 > 0:20:48extraordinary axeman.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00You are wearing a Welsh shirt.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02Your accent is not telling me you are Welsh.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05No, I'm from Queensland in Australia.

0:21:05 > 0:21:06What brings you here?

0:21:06 > 0:21:10I met some of the Welsh boys in the Sydney Show and they invited

0:21:10 > 0:21:13me to come over here.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15How did you get into it?

0:21:15 > 0:21:18My father was a word chopper.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21My brother and myself, that's how we got into it.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24You're not the average axe chopper here, so how does that affect

0:21:24 > 0:21:26things having one arm?

0:21:26 > 0:21:29I've been competitive since I was ten years old.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32I lost my arm when I was eight years old so I can't compare

0:21:32 > 0:21:37what it is to use two arms.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39You didn't lose your arm chopping?

0:21:39 > 0:21:44No, it was a hay bailer.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47We have a cattle property.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49To people watching at home, would you recommend it

0:21:49 > 0:21:50as a sport to take up?

0:21:50 > 0:21:54Absolutely, it keeps you fit and the people you meet

0:21:54 > 0:21:59and the camaraderie, you've got friends for life.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03It's certainly the most exciting corner of the show.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05It feels a bit like a rodeo.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07But for wood, obviously.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Extraordinarily fit people with these super-sharp tools

0:22:10 > 0:22:12going gung ho in competition.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16It's incredible to witness.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20Yesterday we met former journalist turned pig farmer Liz Shankland

0:22:20 > 0:22:25who was getting her Tamworths ready for today's competition.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27I've got a pair of lucky knickers.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31I do know that.

0:22:34 > 0:22:39Who knew when you come to show you have to water pigs?

0:22:39 > 0:22:42I've come up to catch up with Liz because I want to know how

0:22:42 > 0:22:44lucky were her knickers?

0:22:44 > 0:22:48I made a dreadful mistake and I forgot my lucky knickers.

0:22:48 > 0:22:52It was too far to go back.

0:22:52 > 0:22:53We started too early.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55What happened?

0:22:55 > 0:23:00I just had to wear the ones I have got on and I got second,

0:23:00 > 0:23:03so I think it proves the power of the lucky knickers.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05You will never forget them every again.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07Definitely not.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10Next year, maybe try commando.

0:23:10 > 0:23:15I have got my standards, no, right!

0:23:15 > 0:23:21Your pigs are making a break for the border.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23I had better go after them.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Get them under control.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29The Royal Welsh Show is an annual holiday for many of the farmers

0:23:29 > 0:23:35here and Gareth Wyn Jones has chosen is as his holiday destination

0:23:35 > 0:23:36for the last 25 years.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39He is here with his family enjoying some of the entertainment.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41What a privilege it is to have a grandstand

0:23:41 > 0:23:44view of the main ring.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02They come from everywhere.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Even from the skies.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18I thought I could shift on a quad!

0:24:22 > 0:24:26But I am about to experience exactly how fast these guys can move.

0:24:43 > 0:24:47At the end of his act, Kangaroo Kid attempted to jump a truck,

0:24:47 > 0:24:50and this is what happened.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02After the fall, he was treated quickly at the scene and taken

0:25:02 > 0:25:05to hospital by air ambulance.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09I'm glad to say Kangaroo Kid is back at the showground.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11So am I!

0:25:11 > 0:25:15What happened?

0:25:15 > 0:25:18I was a bit rushed and I missed my gear and I thought I'm

0:25:18 > 0:25:21still going fast enough, but obviously I could have hit

0:25:21 > 0:25:24the ramp and missed it by a mile.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28You have got to get close and it's got to be an entertainment show.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31I thought, I'm still OK, I will make it.

0:25:31 > 0:25:36When it hit the back of the truck and off-loaded me,

0:25:36 > 0:25:38I went like Superman.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40And you bounced.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43Like all good kangaroos.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45When are you back on the bike?

0:25:45 > 0:25:48Hopefully a few wheelies in tonight's performance.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Don't ask me to come along!

0:25:50 > 0:25:57All the best.

0:25:57 > 0:25:58Love you all.

0:26:02 > 0:26:03CHEERING.

0:26:03 > 0:26:04Gareth, you nearly killed the entertainment,

0:26:04 > 0:26:06but Kangaroo Kid bounced back.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Cerys, all hail to you.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29It's a promise, we would love to have you back.

0:26:29 > 0:26:30Tomorrow is a big day.

0:26:30 > 0:26:36Yes, it is Welsh cob day, my favourite day.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39Don't even think about missing it but before we talk about tomorrow,

0:26:39 > 0:26:42we need to go back to today and to our winners.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47CHEERING.
