:04:20. > :04:30.But I happen to know there are plenty of front loaders

:04:31. > :04:33.that go on the front of tractors, so what makes this prize-winning?

:04:34. > :04:36.We're really honoured to get this prize.

:04:37. > :04:38.This product is the culmination of five years and ?30

:04:39. > :04:45.The key to that was trying to develop something

:04:46. > :04:47.for the future that saves the farmer money and improves

:04:48. > :04:55.That sounds like it definitely deserves a prize.

:04:56. > :05:04.From a spectacular front-loader to somebody with an awful lot

:05:05. > :05:08.The horses here come in all different shapes and sizes -

:06:26. > :06:29.The mares are a very big spectacle and some of the best will be

:06:30. > :06:49.she contracted a very bad virus within her stomach

:06:50. > :06:52.and she was due to be sold but because of illness,

:06:53. > :06:54.she was not allowed because she was not well enough

:06:55. > :06:58.to go to the sales and she stayed at home, and we have been very

:06:59. > :07:02.The last three years, she has competed at the Royal Welsh Show

:07:03. > :07:10.We all love her so much, she has put us on the map.

:07:11. > :07:14.The show everybody wants to win is the Royal Welsh Show.

:07:15. > :07:16.Fantastic, and really good luck to you today.

:07:17. > :07:28.Jonathan, you have just come out of the Main Ring, how did it go?

:07:29. > :07:34.Fantastic, she was fourth out of 45 mares, fantastic entry

:07:35. > :07:37.of mares, very pleased with the result.

:07:38. > :07:40.It takes a lot to exhibit a successful Welsh cob

:07:41. > :07:43.and a lot to be a judge, as today's Judge Daniel Morgan

:07:44. > :07:51.Kate went to meet him before the show.

:07:52. > :07:58.When you see a Welsh cob in action, you understand why they are such

:07:59. > :08:06.It takes decades of experience to produce an animal like this.

:08:07. > :08:15.I feel like I'm in the presence of The Queen!

:08:16. > :08:17.This is Gorgeous Lady, she is seven years of age.

:08:18. > :08:19.For Daniel Morgan, breeding cobs is in his blood.

:08:20. > :08:27.Yes, since I was that small, I have seen them.

:08:28. > :08:32.It is a quintessentially Welsh animal.

:08:33. > :08:37.Yes, it is, it has got to be beautiful, eye-catching.

:08:38. > :08:41.And the presence of the animal when she goes into the ring,

:08:42. > :08:45.or the stallion goes into the ring, captivates you straightaway.

:08:46. > :08:50.And they do have this wonderful physical presence, don't they?

:08:51. > :08:55.Looking at the shape of her, it feels like it's all about power.

:08:56. > :09:04.Yes, she has a wide chest and a good quarter as well.

:09:05. > :09:07.Daniel is the third generation of his family to judge at the show

:09:08. > :09:10.and he told me that looks aren't everything, it's also

:09:11. > :09:19.That was quite an acrobatic display, have you got your breath back?

:09:20. > :09:42.This is The Queen of the Park, she's 24 years of age now.

:09:43. > :09:45.She has had her coat again this year and...

:09:46. > :09:49.A beautiful, elegant animal, and I could not resist taking

:09:50. > :09:56.I might need to go and have a little lie down.

:09:57. > :10:09.That was an unforgettable day, and someone who has had

:10:10. > :10:25.an unforgettable night is Omar Hamdi.

:10:26. > :10:28.As you can see, the show is well and truly over for another night,

:10:29. > :10:32.but I have heard there are a lot of people who will be here late

:10:33. > :10:41.until the early hours, I am going to find them.

:10:42. > :10:44.It is gone midnight and all the cattle sort of are falling

:10:45. > :10:47.asleep and a lot of farmers are around them having a party.

:10:48. > :10:49.I thought they would be fully asleep by now,

:10:50. > :11:02.They are settled and chilled out and relaxing.

:11:03. > :11:06.Last year, we had a great time, the year before that, we had a great

:11:07. > :11:10.So what does this mean to people like you who are regular showgoers?

:11:11. > :11:13.It is a holiday for me, it is not just for farmers,

:11:14. > :11:17.We will all be up until about four o'clock and away we go.

:11:18. > :11:31.I will be sleeping with her tonight, just checking everything goes

:11:32. > :11:34.It is unbelievable how comfortable that animal and that person

:11:35. > :11:49.We will catch up with Omar's night-time adventure later,

:11:50. > :11:52.but I am in the food hall in search of Gareth Wyn Jones.

:11:53. > :12:00.Now, I thought I was the grandest person you knew!

:12:01. > :12:03.Apparently, that is not so, you have been hobnobbing with royalty.

:12:04. > :12:05.I went to meet the Prince of Wales, Kate.

:12:06. > :12:13.We had a long chat about local produce and traditional ways

:12:14. > :12:15.of farming and he was just so supportive.

:12:16. > :12:18.I offered him some of my lamb, do you know what he said?

:12:19. > :12:29.Young man, send me some of that mutton down!

:12:30. > :12:32.The Royals, as you know, have had a long association

:12:33. > :12:37.There is nobody from the Royal Family here this year,

:12:38. > :12:39.but it is not called the Royal Welsh Show

:12:40. > :12:56.There has been a Royal connection with the show since 1907,

:12:57. > :12:58.when George Prince of Wales agreed to become the patron.

:12:59. > :13:01.The George Prince of Wales Cup is still a coveted prize today,

:13:02. > :13:03.awarded for the best Welsh cob at the show.

:13:04. > :13:06.King Edward VII was also a regular visitor to the early shows,

:13:07. > :13:08.competing with his Hereford cattle, although he often left

:13:09. > :13:13.It would take until 1922 until the Welsh Show was awarded

:13:14. > :13:16.Royal patronage and became the Royal Welsh Show.

:13:17. > :13:18.Thw 1947 Royal Welsh at Carmarthen welcomed a young Princess Elizabeth

:13:19. > :13:21.for the first time and The Queen remains the patron today.

:13:22. > :13:23.Since the show settled in its permanent home

:13:24. > :13:25.at Builth Wells in 1963, the Royal family have

:13:26. > :13:31.The Royal Welsh Show brings people together -

:13:32. > :13:33.royalty, landowners, farm owners, tenants and farm

:13:34. > :13:34.workers, coming together to celebrate agriculture and rural

:13:35. > :13:59.Still to come: We've got a beauty contest for cattle.

:14:00. > :14:02.Omar braves the Young Persons' Village.

:14:03. > :14:06.And we find out which Welsh cob trots away with today's prize.

:14:07. > :14:12.Somebody else who hasn't just made his family proud,

:14:13. > :14:15.but the whole Welsh country, is Kevin, who came second

:14:16. > :14:38.in the World Sheepdog Trials in Holland last week.

:14:39. > :14:42.That looked like a very efficient round, Kevin, will you win today?

:14:43. > :14:48.But things went well and we are just waiting for the judges.

:14:49. > :14:50.Being on the world stage, as you were last week,

:14:51. > :15:02.We travelled to Holland and there were 240 of the best dogs

:15:03. > :15:04.in the world and I was lucky to come second.

:15:05. > :15:09.I know you are a border collie man and most people when they think

:15:10. > :15:16.of herding dogs they picture these lovely, little, spry dogs.

:15:17. > :15:18.But most herding nations have their own indigenous herding

:15:19. > :15:22.dogs and I have to say, and I know Kevin disagrees,

:15:23. > :15:26.that the Welsh sheepdog is amongst the finest.

:15:27. > :15:52.It is the most beautiful partnership between human

:15:53. > :15:55.and animal that I know, but four years ago I would

:15:56. > :15:59.never, ever have dreamt that I could do this.

:16:00. > :16:02.There is one person who has really helped me get my head around

:16:03. > :16:13.For farmer Adeline Jones no other breed can compare

:16:14. > :16:22.They have got a history that goes back hundreds of years.

:16:23. > :16:36.The other is that they are immensely practical.

:16:37. > :16:39.You can work with sheep or cattle or pigs.

:16:40. > :16:43.What is it that actively makes these dogs Welsh sheepdogs?

:16:44. > :16:47.It is the fact they are upright on their feet and they are very

:16:48. > :16:50.mobile and they can be vocal and not that stalking, fixed stare

:16:51. > :16:53.I know you have got some young dogs here today.

:16:54. > :16:56.Can we have a look at them showing off?

:16:57. > :16:58.I would love to show them off, but I cannot necessarily tell

:16:59. > :17:09.That is the other thing about the Welsh collie.

:17:10. > :17:12.Is it Saffy, the little young black and white one?

:17:13. > :17:19.She will turn in with her mouth, but she is not biting.

:17:20. > :17:25.They look like they are enjoying themselves and having a good time.

:17:26. > :17:29.But seeing Welsh sheepdogs work like this is still a rare sight.

:17:30. > :17:34.At one stage the breed was close to dying out.

:17:35. > :17:41.When the society was started, 20 years ago in 1997, they found 66

:17:42. > :17:50.Now we have got just about 2500 which we have bred over 20 years.

:17:51. > :17:54.But as far as farmers are concerned, these are really good,

:17:55. > :18:02.Certainly, I would not be without them.

:18:03. > :18:09.They are just very special working dogs.

:18:10. > :18:14.The Welsh Sheepdog Society celebrates its 20th anniversary this

:18:15. > :18:17.year and it is thanks to its work that these wonderful dogs

:18:18. > :18:20.will remain a feature of this rural landscape for many

:18:21. > :18:33.The show is an enormously important social event for farmers of all ages

:18:34. > :18:36.and when darkness falls there is just one place to be

:18:37. > :18:41.and that is the Young People's village, as Omar discovered.

:18:42. > :18:45.I didn't know exactly what that meant, the Young People's Village.

:18:46. > :18:49.It is a village in the middle of nowhere devoted to young people

:18:50. > :18:59.Scott, you are here at the Royal Welsh.

:19:00. > :19:08.This is one of my favourite gigs that I do all year.

:19:09. > :19:10.I do a lot of freshers' gigs, students all the year-round,

:19:11. > :19:14.but this is literary travelling miles and it takes about four

:19:15. > :19:24.hours and you get around the corner and it is all here.

:19:25. > :19:28.What is it that keeps drawing you back year after year?

:19:29. > :19:31.It is the energy of the crowd, it is 5000 young people.

:19:32. > :19:48.You can play anything and they love it, it is a proper party crowd.

:19:49. > :19:51.Omar, I am impressed, you have gone native.

:19:52. > :20:03.It was brilliant, I was drinking a lot of coffee but it was amazing.

:20:04. > :20:07.I was on stage DJing with Scott Mills, it

:20:08. > :20:16.And the first time ever at the show, did it change your expectations?

:20:17. > :20:19.Yes, it did, I like goats more than I thought I would.

:20:20. > :20:38.Do you think you will be back next year?

:20:39. > :20:39.Definitely, I have already booked it.

:20:40. > :20:42.Thank you for being with us and undertaking that midnight mission.

:20:43. > :20:44.One of the most unusual competitions is the team of five.

:20:45. > :20:49.One of the highlights of the show for me every year

:20:50. > :20:53.is this competition, the beef cattle team of five.

:20:54. > :20:56.The breed judge chooses the five best matching animals

:20:57. > :21:02.It is from all the entries at the show and not all

:21:03. > :21:17.This is a real clash of the Titans and someone who is an expert in this

:21:18. > :21:22.To make a team it is important there is at least one male or one

:21:23. > :21:28.female in the group, so you could have a combination

:21:29. > :21:31.of four females and one male, or four males and one female

:21:32. > :21:40.It is up to the breed judge to match these and this

:21:41. > :21:47.It must be even and that is what happened when the three judges

:21:48. > :21:51.It is not a question of individual animals, it is the team.

:21:52. > :22:06.There are a lot of cattle here at the moment.

:22:07. > :22:10.There are 75 animals here representing 15 breeds

:22:11. > :22:15.which we are glad to see, but we have also got our native

:22:16. > :22:24.We have also got the beef shorthorns and they go back to 1882.

:22:25. > :22:27.We have also got the Continental cattle in here which are represented

:22:28. > :22:31.It will be exciting to watch this climax.

:22:32. > :22:33.Everybody will be on their toes towards the end.

:22:34. > :22:41.It is a very hard job, but he will line them up at the end

:22:42. > :22:45.and get them down to eight and then down to four groups and then down

:22:46. > :23:00.to two groups and then he will decide the champions

:23:01. > :23:03.and the reserve and that will be our climax today.

:23:04. > :23:08.He has already picked four teams and he will select his champion

:23:09. > :23:14.This is really exciting and there is a massive crowd here.

:23:15. > :23:31.We have just come to the climax and the Charolais have won it

:23:32. > :23:47.It is like winning the World Cup in Rugby.

:23:48. > :24:19.This is such a popular competition where the crowd and the atmosphere

:24:20. > :24:31.When the winner is announced a mare called Trevelyan Rosanna,

:24:32. > :24:38.My goodness, something tells me this might be the winning corner.

:24:39. > :24:42.Can you tell me what has just happened?

:24:43. > :24:54.Nelson has won it and he is a lifelong friend and everybody loves

:24:55. > :25:03.him. And now it is time to meet

:25:04. > :25:06.the winner of the George And here she is,

:25:07. > :25:10.our triumphant winner and triumphant breeder,

:25:11. > :25:14.Nelson. Congratulations, she

:25:15. > :25:16.is a beautiful mare. Our dams produced several champions

:25:17. > :25:27.and when she was born and she was a foal, I knew

:25:28. > :25:30.she was going to be The looks, the way she moved,

:25:31. > :25:44.everything about her. What we did, at Christmas I gave it

:25:45. > :25:50.to him as a Christmas present, that was his Christmas present,

:25:51. > :25:53.Dean, his mare, and he is the owner. And you did all the hard work

:25:54. > :25:56.and the running around in the ring. When you are on a stage like this

:25:57. > :25:59.at the Royal Welsh Show, It feels like you are floating,

:26:00. > :26:17.like it is not real. When you came out here today,

:26:18. > :26:20.did you have any sense that you might be walking away with one

:26:21. > :26:23.of the most important prizes of the whole

:26:24. > :26:25.of the Royal Welsh Show? We always thought she was good

:26:26. > :26:28.enough to win it, and when Grandad gifted it to me he said she would be

:26:29. > :26:31.good enough to win I am absolutely delighted

:26:32. > :26:38.for all of you. Do you think her foal can

:26:39. > :26:40.be a future champion? I think she will, you will see

:26:41. > :26:43.her at a future show. Watch this space, this could be

:26:44. > :26:47.a future winner of the George, Let's now go to some

:26:48. > :27:05.of our other winners from today. # Lightning, this

:27:06. > :27:09.is what you came for. # Lightning strikes

:27:10. > :27:11.every time she moves. # And she is looking

:27:32. > :27:32.for. # Lightning, strikes every time she
