:00:00. > :00:00.onwards. And that is why, if you are brave enough to defy parliaments,

:00:00. > :02:33.you would be considered as bold as brass.

:02:34. > :03:39.Colleagues, friends, brothers and sisters, welcome to Event City here

:03:40. > :03:45.in Manchester, to launch the Labour Party general election 2017

:03:46. > :03:47.campaign. What a wonderful city! What a

:03:48. > :03:57.wonderful people! APPLAUSE

:03:58. > :04:03.And, I've got to say, I'm terribly excited!

:04:04. > :04:08.About the general election! I'm terribly excited about the policies

:04:09. > :04:19.which Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party are rolling out in 2017!

:04:20. > :04:25.I'm so proud and so privileged. I was a coal miner in the coal mines

:04:26. > :04:29.of the north-east. What a fantastic job at was. Great solidarity, great

:04:30. > :04:37.camaraderie, friendship. And I really privileged to be joined

:04:38. > :04:41.national campaigns coordinator with my good friend Andrew Gwynne, and

:04:42. > :04:42.I'm also very proud to be parted Jeremy CorbynShadow Cabinet!

:04:43. > :04:53.CHEERING These...

:04:54. > :04:59.These, colleagues, are the future of a very bright new dawn with the

:05:00. > :05:05.Labour Party. Listen, this election on aids of June is extremely

:05:06. > :05:11.critical, colleagues. -- on the 8th of June. It isn't complex, it isn't

:05:12. > :05:17.in any way work at science, but it is about serving the many and not

:05:18. > :05:24.the few, as you see on some of the boards. It is about justice, it

:05:25. > :05:29.about equality and fairness across our communities. This election is

:05:30. > :05:31.about transforming our society, making people's lives are better in

:05:32. > :05:38.this country. APPLAUSE

:05:39. > :05:49.Colleagues... Colleagues, we cannot simply

:05:50. > :05:56.continue down the Welch red Tory pass, where a fuel at the very top

:05:57. > :06:03.take the spoils and the rest of the country struggles to cover their way

:06:04. > :06:06.in the world -- we cannot continue down the well-tread Tory path. An

:06:07. > :06:11.election is about the future of the many, not the few. Building a more

:06:12. > :06:18.equal society, a fairer society, a better society for all. You know, I

:06:19. > :06:26.am ashamed at times to see how this country has fallen into the state it

:06:27. > :06:30.actually is. Where it -- we are the sixth richest economy in the world.

:06:31. > :06:35.I want no lectures off anybody telling us we have not got the

:06:36. > :06:44.finances to look after those at the bottom! I don't want anybody kidding

:06:45. > :06:52.me about the wealth of this nation! In the last 12 months, the top 1000

:06:53. > :06:59.richest people in this country increased their wealth by ?83

:07:00. > :07:05.billion whilst one million-plus people use food banks simply to

:07:06. > :07:08.exist. No lectures on the wealth of this nation. We have seen the

:07:09. > :07:14.National Health Service brought to its knees with staff are

:07:15. > :07:19.undervalued, with the children left in corridors or, indeed, using

:07:20. > :07:26.chairs for beds. We have all seen that photograph in the Daily Mirror

:07:27. > :07:35.where we had this little baby in a critical condition in hospital lying

:07:36. > :07:41.on two patio chairs pushed together. Colleagues, it's got to change!

:07:42. > :07:44.CHEERING We've seen the schools...

:07:45. > :07:51.We've seen our schools under attack, with the least well off seeing the

:07:52. > :07:54.biggest cuts and the Prime Minister pursuing a wasteful and divisive

:07:55. > :07:59.Academy and grammar School programme. And we will not stand by

:08:00. > :08:04.and allow this to happen. We have seen the world of work change beyond

:08:05. > :08:12.recognition, with a secure job now the stuff of dreams for many people.

:08:13. > :08:15.With 1 million people on zero-hours contracts. Colleagues, we will ban

:08:16. > :08:27.zero our contracts! CHEERING

:08:28. > :08:30.-- we will ban zero-hours contracts! We have seen a rise in poverty

:08:31. > :08:36.across-the-board, with child poverty, with pensioner poverty,

:08:37. > :08:45.with fuel poverty all soaring. We hear harrowing stories about

:08:46. > :08:48.children, kids, babies, at school, putting their arms up and asking to

:08:49. > :08:57.go to the toilet and then visiting the cloakroom to get the sandwiches

:08:58. > :09:02.out of somebody else's packed lunch. We hear the harrowing stories of

:09:03. > :09:08.kids, our future, rating the refrigerators in the schools instead

:09:09. > :09:19.of being fed properly like this party promises. Cannot be allowed to

:09:20. > :09:26.continue, man. It's 2017, and the Labour Party will stand to put up

:09:27. > :09:34.with it no more, colleagues. APPLAUSE

:09:35. > :09:40.It's doesn't have to be this way! Politics is about choices, and this

:09:41. > :09:45.election offers our party a golden opportunity. It offers a chance to

:09:46. > :09:48.offer the British people a programme that will improve their lives and

:09:49. > :09:54.make our country a better place to live. The manifesto is bold, it is

:09:55. > :10:01.imaginative, it is distinct. It is a great Labour Party manifesto. It

:10:02. > :10:04.seeks to excite the young people, it seeks to protect sure start, ensure

:10:05. > :10:09.school funding is maintained, giving everybody a hot nutritious meal at

:10:10. > :10:13.school, restoring the education maintenance allowance and university

:10:14. > :10:17.bursaries. For the Older People, we ensure the pensions triple lock will

:10:18. > :10:25.be maintained, free bus passes and winter fuel will be maintained.

:10:26. > :10:30.Proper funding of the NHS and social care. And what is really important

:10:31. > :10:35.for the Older People is tackling the epidemic of loneliness. These are

:10:36. > :10:43.guarantees from Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party. You know, we can do

:10:44. > :10:49.pet if -- better for people in work. Giving the workforce arise, a rise

:10:50. > :10:52.in the living wage to its real level, banning zero-hours contracts

:10:53. > :10:57.and insuring workers have the boys. We could do better for public

:10:58. > :11:00.services and ensure the currently undervalued staff, who are

:11:01. > :11:05.overstretched, not only get a pay rise but the resources to do their

:11:06. > :11:13.jobs properly. Whose sole Theresa May on the BBC only last week? I was

:11:14. > :11:22.amazed. She was asked, is it fair that nurses have had a 14% pay cut

:11:23. > :11:27.since 2010? And are having to use food banks? She was bonded by saying

:11:28. > :11:31.the reason nurses are using food banks is extremely compact -- she

:11:32. > :11:36.responded by saying. It's not complex, they have not got enough

:11:37. > :11:37.money to feed themselves and their families. And that must end,

:11:38. > :11:50.comrades. APPLAUSE.

:11:51. > :11:54.You know, when you want to change, when we want to change the political

:11:55. > :12:01.landscape of work, when we are looking to change politics in the

:12:02. > :12:04.best interests of everyone, when we are up against the might of the

:12:05. > :12:15.establishment who'll do whatever it takes to cling on to that unchecked

:12:16. > :12:19.powers, we'll all experience setbacks as individuals and as a

:12:20. > :12:23.party. We get knocked down but we've got to get back up again, dust

:12:24. > :12:30.ourselves down and get back into this fight for Government. We might

:12:31. > :12:33.be down at times. As I say, dust yourselves down, there's a fight to

:12:34. > :12:40.be had. You know, we've got... APPLAUSE.

:12:41. > :12:46.A great political movement. In the movement, the Labour and the Trade

:12:47. > :12:50.Union movement was born in struggle. They don't call it the struggle for

:12:51. > :12:55.nothing. And we understand the challenges here. Never forget the

:12:56. > :13:00.sacrifices that our predecessors made to deliver the institutions and

:13:01. > :13:09.freedoms we now enjoy. And remember, things can be different. It doesn't

:13:10. > :13:13.have to be this way. No-one should be held back and you need no-one

:13:14. > :13:19.behind. Colleagues, we have a duty, we have a moral duty, we have a

:13:20. > :13:24.political obligation, to communicate and articulate our messages, our

:13:25. > :13:36.policies in every town, every city, every village here in the UK we must

:13:37. > :13:43.speak to people door-to-door in whatever capacity we can. Anybody

:13:44. > :13:53.who wants to help can next the number on the screen supposed to be

:13:54. > :13:59.behind me now, see. Colleagues, I'm concluding quite simply by saying,

:14:00. > :14:05.let's mobilise a winning future for all. Let's win the hearts and minds

:14:06. > :14:10.of our people and deliver a fairer, equal Society for The many and not

:14:11. > :14:22.the few. On wards and upwards! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:14:23. > :14:42.Thank you. Thank you. Colleagues, thank you. Thank you so much.

:14:43. > :14:57.Colleagues, it gives me great pleasure to introduce the next

:14:58. > :15:02.speaker, Julie Hesmond-Halsh. Best-known for Corrie and more

:15:03. > :15:12.recently broad church and Happy Valley. Julie, the floor's yours.

:15:13. > :15:21.Thank you. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:15:22. > :15:30.Thank you. Right, well, follow that. Brilliant. Hello, everyone. Good

:15:31. > :15:36.morning. I feel incredibly humbled and honoured to be here today at the

:15:37. > :15:43.launch of the Labour Party general election campaign in this amazing

:15:44. > :15:47.city with its rich history of culture, of industry of protest, of

:15:48. > :15:58.struggle and resistance. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:15:59. > :16:06.When Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the party 18 months ago, I can

:16:07. > :16:09.honestly say that in my adult life I had never felt as excited and

:16:10. > :16:25.exhilarated by Party Politics. APPLAUSE.

:16:26. > :16:31.For me, it felt like a moment. A moment when the Labour Party and its

:16:32. > :16:38.core values and principles would finally be in line with my own

:16:39. > :16:49.deeply held socialist beliefs about equality, justice and peace.

:16:50. > :16:56.APPLAUSE. At the time on the campaign trail, I

:16:57. > :17:04.said I felt like I was part of a new, exciting mass movement of

:17:05. > :17:10.people who gave a toss about stuff. APPLAUSE.

:17:11. > :17:17.Well, this is our moment, this is our chance and from tomorrow we have

:17:18. > :17:23.30 days. 30 days to be on the right side of history. 30 days to take our

:17:24. > :17:31.message into the homes and the hearts and the minds of people who

:17:32. > :17:32.been long disenfranchised with politics thinking that we are all

:17:33. > :17:50.the same. We emphatically are not. APPLAUSE.

:17:51. > :17:58.We have 30 days to create the opportunity for a fairer, better,

:17:59. > :17:59.more equal society and 30 days to save our NHS.

:18:00. > :18:16.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Now is the time to put everything

:18:17. > :18:21.else aside, to stand up for what you believe in in your hearts and souls,

:18:22. > :18:30.to get out on to the streets, get this message across loud and clear.

:18:31. > :18:33.Let's turn this mass movement into a Government, a country, a society

:18:34. > :19:02.that truly gives a toss about stuff. Now, everyone please give a warm,

:19:03. > :19:06.riotous welcome to a man who's dedicated his life to giving a toss

:19:07. > :19:28.about other people. Jeremy Corbyn! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:19:29. > :20:19.Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

:20:20. > :20:24.Thank you, Julie, for that fantastic introduction and to you and Ian for

:20:25. > :20:31.that fantastic welcome here to Manchester today. It's fantastic we

:20:32. > :20:40.are launching our election campaign here in Manchester. Manchester shows

:20:41. > :20:45.the way in many, many things. One, it showed last Thursday, was by

:20:46. > :20:53.electing Andy Burnham as the Mayor of Greater Manchester.

:20:54. > :21:00.APPLAUSE. And can I... Andy! Andy!

:21:01. > :21:10.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Well done. Thank you very much.

:21:11. > :21:19.Fantastic. Give them a wave. Thanks, Andy.

:21:20. > :21:25.Andy will be a great Mayor. But just think how much more Andy will be

:21:26. > :21:29.able to achieve if he's working with a Labour Government committed to the

:21:30. > :21:35.many not the few. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:21:36. > :21:38.Andy, thanks, congratulations on your election and the people of

:21:39. > :21:46.Manchester are lucky to have you as their Mayor. Well done, Andy.

:21:47. > :21:52.APPLAUSE. We have four weeks, we have four

:21:53. > :21:58.weeks to take our message to the voters, to convince them, Britain

:21:59. > :22:04.can be better. It can be transformed. It doesn't have to be

:22:05. > :22:10.like this. We can transform Britain into a country that instead of being

:22:11. > :22:11.run for the rich, is one where everyone can lead richer lives.

:22:12. > :22:28.APPLAUSE. And I mean richer in every sense.

:22:29. > :22:32.Richer because all of us have potential to fulfil, family to

:22:33. > :22:39.support, interests to pursue, richer when that potential that is there in

:22:40. > :22:45.all of us is not held back. Because there is no doubt this country is

:22:46. > :22:50.being held back. If your children aren't getting the education they

:22:51. > :22:56.deserve, because the class sizes are too high, then your children are

:22:57. > :23:01.being held back. If you're a young couple or anyone trying to get a

:23:02. > :23:08.home and can't make a home because rent and house prices are too high,

:23:09. > :23:15.then you're being held back. If you've worked hard all your life but

:23:16. > :23:19.you can't pursue your dreams of your retirement because you're supporting

:23:20. > :23:27.your family well into their adulthood, then you too are being

:23:28. > :23:33.held back. But Britain is a rich country, the sixth richest country

:23:34. > :23:39.in the world. We caught a glimpse of that wealth only two days ago when

:23:40. > :23:47.Rupert Murdoch's Sunday Times published its rich list. In the last

:23:48. > :23:59.year, Britain's 1,000 richest people have seen their wealth rise by 14%

:24:00. > :24:06.to ?658 billion. That is six times the total budget of our National

:24:07. > :24:13.Health Service. Imagine the outcry if public sector workers decided to

:24:14. > :24:20.put in for a 14% pay rise. Just imagine it. But it's no surprise

:24:21. > :24:26.that the richest have got even richer after the tens of billions

:24:27. > :24:31.the Tories have handed them in tax cuts. That's what we mean when we

:24:32. > :24:37.say the system is rigged for the rich. So thanks for making that

:24:38. > :24:46.clear, Mr Murdoch. APPLAUSE.

:24:47. > :24:49.And so I don't know if Rupert Murdoch plans to give us any other

:24:50. > :24:52.help during the election campaign, but we are grateful for that

:24:53. > :25:00.information. LAUGHTER.

:25:01. > :25:05.In fact, I am more likely expecting hostility. Our challenge to a rigged

:25:06. > :25:14.system is bound to meet hostile till. Change always involves taking

:25:15. > :25:19.on vested interests and there is a real danger that the Tories'

:25:20. > :25:24.scaremongering and spin machine will make some people settle for less

:25:25. > :25:30.than they should, resign themselves to things the way they are.

:25:31. > :25:38.Underestimating just how many more burdens the Tories could impose if

:25:39. > :25:42.an omission to halt the rich getting riching is not halted. The stakes

:25:43. > :25:49.are high. We know from last week's local elections how big the

:25:50. > :25:53.challenge is. We have to convince the sceptical and undecided. They're

:25:54. > :25:58.not sure which way to turn. Who can blame them? People are alienated

:25:59. > :26:09.from politics and politicians. Our Westminster system is broken and

:26:10. > :26:15.our economy is rigged. Both are run in the interests of the few labour

:26:16. > :26:21.is under attack because we are standing up to the elite, who are

:26:22. > :26:24.determined to hijack Brexit and pay even less tax and take even more of

:26:25. > :26:39.the wealth that we all create. APPLAUSE

:26:40. > :26:46.Labour is under attack because we're standing up to the corporate

:26:47. > :26:50.interests plundering our National Health Service.

:26:51. > :26:59.How much more will be privatised if the Tories get another five years?

:27:00. > :27:02.We are drawing a line under decades of privatisation, from energy, to

:27:03. > :27:16.rail, to health, to social care. APPLAUSE

:27:17. > :27:25.That privatisation has made some people very rich indeed, but it has

:27:26. > :27:29.not delivered richer lives for the majority of our people.

:27:30. > :27:36.In the coming days, we will be setting out our plan to transform

:27:37. > :27:44.Britain with an upgraded economy run for the many, not the few.

:27:45. > :27:53.APPLAUSE Theresa May thinks she can dodge the

:27:54. > :27:58.Tory record by claiming she wants to build a fairer Britain, that she

:27:59. > :28:06.cares about working people. Does she think people will forget

:28:07. > :28:10.how the Tories have actually treated working people? It was this Tory

:28:11. > :28:17.leader who sat alongside David Cameron in Government for six years.

:28:18. > :28:21.She was with him when they introduced the bedroom tax. What is

:28:22. > :28:31.Remona Aly fairer about the bedroom tax? What was fair about racking up

:28:32. > :28:40.tuition fees? Or taking benefits away from people with disabilities?

:28:41. > :28:50.APPLAUSE Or about closing the wonderful

:28:51. > :28:59.Labour achievements, our Sure Start centres around the country. Or

:29:00. > :29:05.starving our schools of the cash they need to pay teachers and all

:29:06. > :29:08.those that work in those wonderful teams in our schools? Or opening up

:29:09. > :29:16.the National Health Service to be feasted on by profiteers? Just in

:29:17. > :29:22.case their talk of fairness doesn't wash, they have another card to

:29:23. > :29:27.play, that this election is all about Brexit and who can play at

:29:28. > :29:33.being toughest with Brussels. Labour will not allow the Tories to put

:29:34. > :29:35.their party interests ahead of the real national interests, the

:29:36. > :29:36.interests of the people of this country.

:29:37. > :29:55.APPLAUSE This election is not about Brexit

:29:56. > :29:59.itself, that issue has been settled. The question now is what sort of

:30:00. > :30:05.Brexit do we want, and what sort of country do we want Britain to be

:30:06. > :30:10.after that? Labour wants a job 's first Brexit, a Brexit that

:30:11. > :30:19.safeguards the future of Britain's vital industries.

:30:20. > :30:27.APPLAUSE A Brexit that paves the way to a

:30:28. > :30:31.genuinely fairer society, protecting human rights and an upgraded

:30:32. > :30:41.economy. Labour's plan to transform Britain

:30:42. > :30:45.will mean a big deal to upgrade the economy, new infrastructure to

:30:46. > :30:51.support the industries of the future and an investment in training and

:30:52. > :30:56.skills to equip our workforce to compete globally. It also means

:30:57. > :31:01.rebuilding our National Health Service and social care services

:31:02. > :31:14.with the funding they need. APPLAUSE

:31:15. > :31:20.It means building a million homes to rent and buy.

:31:21. > :31:36.APPLAUSE And it means tackling the scandal of

:31:37. > :31:38.our pollution, which contributes to 40,000 deaths per year -- tackling

:31:39. > :31:45.the scandal of ALL: HOWZAT! Pollution.

:31:46. > :31:52.-- the scandal of air pollution. We will not be paying lip service to

:31:53. > :31:57.working people, we will introduce a comprehensive programme to

:31:58. > :32:05.strengthen rights at work. Make sure new jobs are good jobs.

:32:06. > :32:15.APPLAUSE And end the race to the bottom in

:32:16. > :32:22.pay, conditions and job security. Low pay and insecurity have spread

:32:23. > :32:29.like an epidemic under the Tories. Labour will invest in skills, jobs

:32:30. > :32:33.and take action to enforce a floor under employment standards right

:32:34. > :32:39.across-the-board so that all jobs are decent jobs, so that all

:32:40. > :32:45.workers, the true wealth creators in society, can play their part in

:32:46. > :32:58.transforming Britain and benefit fully from it.

:32:59. > :33:05.That is why we are fighting to win this election, so we can transform

:33:06. > :33:10.Britain for the many and not the few. When we win, the British people

:33:11. > :33:18.win. APPLAUSE

:33:19. > :33:22.The nurse... The people win. The nurse, the teacher, the small

:33:23. > :33:27.trader, the carer, the builder, the office worker. They all win. Labour

:33:28. > :33:32.is offering a real choice, a real alternative to the rigged system

:33:33. > :33:36.holding us back, and to the Conservatives, who are running our

:33:37. > :33:41.country down. The economy is still rigged in favour of the rich and

:33:42. > :33:45.powerful. When Labour wins, there will be a reckoning for those who
