5:12:16 > 5:12:17BABY CRIES
5:12:17 > 5:12:19Hello.
5:12:19 > 5:12:23'There's a reason why people in this country love the NHS
5:12:23 > 5:12:27'because of the values, the people who work in it and the job they do.'
5:12:27 > 5:12:28Have we got any patient safety
5:12:28 > 5:12:31and patient experience issues we want to raise today?
5:12:31 > 5:12:33'I don't think politicians can get the right solutions
5:12:33 > 5:12:34'to the health service
5:12:34 > 5:12:37'without seeing exactly what is really going on.'
5:12:37 > 5:12:39- Hello again.- Nice to meet you again. - How are you?
5:12:39 > 5:12:40'So I spent two days'
5:12:40 > 5:12:43going round different parts of the hospital.
5:12:43 > 5:12:45It wasn't about putting things on show,
5:12:45 > 5:12:48'it was about seeing through the eyes of the nurses, the doctors,
5:12:48 > 5:12:50'the patients and to try and learn from that.'
5:12:50 > 5:12:52- I'm Ed. What's your name?- I'm Greta.
5:12:52 > 5:12:55'Too often politicians come along and say,'
5:12:55 > 5:12:58"We're going to propose this big change to the health service."
5:12:58 > 5:13:01It looks good on paper in Whitehall or Westminster,
5:13:01 > 5:13:04'then, in practice, it causes chaos.
5:13:04 > 5:13:07'How can you run the health service just from the top down
5:13:07 > 5:13:09'without drawing on that incredible expertise
5:13:09 > 5:13:11'of the people who are actually'
5:13:11 > 5:13:13doing the work?
5:13:13 > 5:13:15'You've got to start from what's actually happening
5:13:15 > 5:13:18'at the grass roots and that's why I did it.'
5:13:18 > 5:13:19Good luck and I hope you feel better.
5:13:19 > 5:13:22And I'm glad that you're getting good care here.
5:13:22 > 5:13:23The pressures are growing,
5:13:23 > 5:13:25the pressures of a growing elderly population,
5:13:25 > 5:13:27the pressures of medical technology -
5:13:27 > 5:13:29'all of those things are making
5:13:29 > 5:13:31'the job of the NHS harder, not easier.
5:13:31 > 5:13:33'There's a sense of deep anxiety.
5:13:33 > 5:13:37'The head nurse in A&E said to me on the first day I was there,'
5:13:37 > 5:13:39"When people can't get
5:13:39 > 5:13:42"to see their GP for a week or two weeks, and they end up in A&E."
5:13:42 > 5:13:44'There's just too many people ending up in A&E
5:13:44 > 5:13:47'because the services elsewhere just aren't there.'
5:13:47 > 5:13:48As a basic thing,
5:13:48 > 5:13:51everyone should have the right to expect they can see a GP within
5:13:51 > 5:13:5548 hours and that is a promise a Labour government will deliver.
5:13:55 > 5:13:58- How are you feeling? - OK, a bit of pain, but OK.
5:13:58 > 5:14:01'This hospital is really desperately in need of modernisation.
5:14:01 > 5:14:04'There was a plan under the last Labour government,
5:14:04 > 5:14:06'it was got rid of by this government,
5:14:06 > 5:14:07'to modernise the hospital.
5:14:07 > 5:14:10'It was really interesting going to the maternity ward
5:14:10 > 5:14:12'because there's one bit that's new, the birthing centre,
5:14:12 > 5:14:14'and there's quite a lot of it, the old bit,
5:14:14 > 5:14:16'that's got peeling paint and, you know,'
5:14:16 > 5:14:18if you're giving birth, it really matters
5:14:18 > 5:14:21'whether the facilities are good enough or not good enough.'
5:14:21 > 5:14:22MONITOR BEEPS
5:14:22 > 5:14:25'And then you've got a young man like Trevais.'
5:14:25 > 5:14:29- How long has he been in for?- He came in ten o'clock yesterday morning.
5:14:29 > 5:14:32'The challenge for me is to make sure I do my bit
5:14:32 > 5:14:36'so that, when he gets to my age, the NHS is still there for him.'
5:14:36 > 5:14:38It made made me impatient to be prime minister
5:14:38 > 5:14:40and to get on with improving the NHS
5:14:40 > 5:14:43and stop it falling backwards, as it is under this government.
5:14:43 > 5:14:47'One junior doctor, who had just qualified, said to me,
5:14:47 > 5:14:48"I'll vote for you if you give me
5:14:48 > 5:14:51"a clear plan for the NHS's future, cos I've just started out
5:14:51 > 5:14:56' "and you need to show me that my faith in the NHS is justified."
5:14:56 > 5:14:59'He said, "That's not up to me as a junior doctor,
5:14:59 > 5:15:02' "that's up to you as a politician."
5:15:02 > 5:15:05'The next five years is a crunch moment for the NHS.'
5:15:05 > 5:15:08I dread to think what another five years of the Tories
5:15:08 > 5:15:10would mean for the National Health Service.
5:15:10 > 5:15:13'David Cameron made all these promises before the last election
5:15:13 > 5:15:16'about how he'd protect the NHS, you know,
5:15:16 > 5:15:17'he wouldn't allow it to slip backwards.
5:15:17 > 5:15:20'He'd have no more of these top-down reorganisations.
5:15:20 > 5:15:24'He's broken that promise, he's broken that bond of trust.
5:15:24 > 5:15:26'I'm not going to make that mistake.'
5:15:26 > 5:15:28It should be easier to see your GP.
5:15:28 > 5:15:31We've got to make sure that the NHS
5:15:31 > 5:15:34and social services work much more closely together
5:15:34 > 5:15:36'and we've got to put the right principles
5:15:36 > 5:15:41'back at the heart of the NHS - care and cooperation and compassion,
5:15:41 > 5:15:43'not privatisation and competition.
5:15:43 > 5:15:46'That's why I'm determined to win the election and show that'
5:15:46 > 5:15:50I did listen and I can lead the NHS to a better future.
