0:00:18 > 0:00:20My grandfather was a politician,

0:00:20 > 0:00:24very involved in traditional Labour values and politics

0:00:24 > 0:00:27in the valleys of South Wales, so that dominated my upbringing.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30He opened the library and the library is where I did my study,

0:00:30 > 0:00:32the library is where my mother worked,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34the library is where I got my education.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37You know, the famous song of The Manic Street Preachers,

0:00:37 > 0:00:40"Libraries gave us power". You know, it was seen as something,

0:00:40 > 0:00:45that knowledge, together with the exercise of political choices,

0:00:45 > 0:00:46would together give power

0:00:46 > 0:00:49and I think that's still true for politics now.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51We have a unique set of circumstances here.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55We're a bilingual nation, we have a great interest in culture

0:00:55 > 0:00:58and the wider sense of self-improvement and education.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Ready? Do it together. Ready?

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Un, dau, tri, pedwar...

0:01:01 > 0:01:04Every time we invest in a young person in Wales,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06we're making a statement that says we believe in the future,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08we believe that things can get better

0:01:08 > 0:01:11and we believe that if we give people the skills and the energy

0:01:11 > 0:01:13and the ideas and the knowledge,

0:01:13 > 0:01:15they can shape the future for themselves

0:01:15 > 0:01:18and be part of shaping our own future then, as a nation.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40I lost my mother a few months before the opportunity arose

0:01:40 > 0:01:46to go into politics and she'd always worked very, very hard

0:01:46 > 0:01:49for community and for Wales.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52So losing her made me realise

0:01:52 > 0:01:55that the time to talk,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57the time to think,

0:01:57 > 0:02:01had to come to an end and that it

0:02:01 > 0:02:03had become a time to take action.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07When you lose somebody close to you,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10that makes you see the world in a different way.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Now, we've had a look at what we've put together with

0:02:14 > 0:02:15Welsh businesses...

0:02:15 > 0:02:17'We need to help small businesses,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19'through cutting their business rates.'

0:02:19 > 0:02:21It's confident, it's ambitious...

0:02:21 > 0:02:25'We need to invest more public money with Welsh companies,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27'give more contracts to Welsh companies.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29'These are some of the ideas that can'

0:02:29 > 0:02:35form the start of a new chapter in Wales's economic history.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Change that culture within Wales, bring that confidence back,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41bring that joint ambition back,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44that we can go places if we put our minds to it.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07I remember being concerned about political issues

0:03:07 > 0:03:08when I was quite young.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12My grandmother in particular was a very strong character

0:03:12 > 0:03:16and she'd experienced quite severe difficulties growing up

0:03:16 > 0:03:18in the 1930s,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21and she was also quite moral.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24She wouldn't be fazed or persuaded to do something

0:03:24 > 0:03:27that she didn't want to do.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30It certainly helped shape a lot of my early thinking, politically.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Well, when they first done the first procedure, we didn't know

0:03:35 > 0:03:38and we were told initially that everything's fine...

0:03:38 > 0:03:42We've put together a programme which tries to tackle

0:03:42 > 0:03:45some of the problems that we have within our health system.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49Our contract for cancer will give a diagnosis or the all-clear

0:03:49 > 0:03:52within 28 days, and that will make a big difference

0:03:52 > 0:03:56to many people for whom cancer is a big problem.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59We're going to end the postcode lottery in new treatments and

0:03:59 > 0:04:02diseases and we're going to end the anomalies between

0:04:02 > 0:04:06health and social care, where people have to pay for some elements

0:04:06 > 0:04:09of social care, where they get other aspects for free.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12These are some of the challenges that we face in the health service

0:04:12 > 0:04:16that can be put right with a Plaid Cymru government.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27There's nothing inevitable about the next government.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30It's in people's hands, and it's in people's control.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32If people want to do something differently now,

0:04:32 > 0:04:35they have an opportunity to do so.
