0:00:08 > 0:00:10My grandfather was a politician,
0:00:10 > 0:00:14very involved in traditional Labour values and politics
0:00:14 > 0:00:17in the valleys of South Wales, so that dominated my upbringing.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20He opened the library and the library is where I did my study,
0:00:20 > 0:00:22the library is where my mother worked,
0:00:22 > 0:00:24the library is where I got my education.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27You know, the famous song of The Manic Street Preachers,
0:00:27 > 0:00:30"Libraries gave us power". You know, it was seen as something,
0:00:30 > 0:00:35that knowledge, together with the exercise of political choices,
0:00:35 > 0:00:36would together give power
0:00:36 > 0:00:39and I think that's still true for politics now.
0:00:39 > 0:00:41We have a unique set of circumstances here.
0:00:41 > 0:00:45We're a bilingual nation, we have a great interest in culture
0:00:45 > 0:00:48and the wider sense of self-improvement and education.
0:00:48 > 0:00:49Ready? Do it together. Ready?
0:00:49 > 0:00:51Un, dau, tri, pedwar...
0:00:51 > 0:00:53Every time we invest in a young person in Wales,
0:00:53 > 0:00:56we're making a statement that says we believe in the future,
0:00:56 > 0:00:58we believe that things can get better
0:00:58 > 0:01:01and we believe that if we give people the skills and the energy
0:01:01 > 0:01:03and the ideas and the knowledge,
0:01:03 > 0:01:05they can shape the future for themselves
0:01:05 > 0:01:08and be part of shaping our own future then, as a nation.
0:01:26 > 0:01:30I lost my mother a few months before the opportunity arose
0:01:30 > 0:01:36to go into politics and she'd always worked very, very hard
0:01:36 > 0:01:38for community and for Wales.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42So losing her made me realise
0:01:42 > 0:01:45that the time to talk,
0:01:45 > 0:01:47the time to think,
0:01:47 > 0:01:51had to come to an end and that it
0:01:51 > 0:01:53had become a time to take action.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57When you lose somebody close to you,
0:01:57 > 0:02:00that makes you see the world in a different way.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04Now, we've had a look at what we've put together with
0:02:04 > 0:02:05Welsh businesses...
0:02:05 > 0:02:07'We need to help small businesses,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09'through cutting their business rates.'
0:02:09 > 0:02:11It's confident, it's ambitious...
0:02:11 > 0:02:15'We need to invest more public money with Welsh companies,
0:02:15 > 0:02:17'give more contracts to Welsh companies.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19'These are some of the ideas that can'
0:02:19 > 0:02:25form the start of a new chapter in Wales's economic history.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29Change that culture within Wales, bring that confidence back,
0:02:29 > 0:02:31bring that joint ambition back,
0:02:31 > 0:02:34that we can go places if we put our minds to it.
0:02:53 > 0:02:57I remember being concerned about political issues
0:02:57 > 0:02:58when I was quite young.
0:02:58 > 0:03:02My grandmother in particular was a very strong character
0:03:02 > 0:03:06and she'd experienced quite severe difficulties growing up
0:03:06 > 0:03:08in the 1930s,
0:03:08 > 0:03:11and she was also quite moral.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14She wouldn't be fazed or persuaded to do something
0:03:14 > 0:03:17that she didn't want to do.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20It certainly helped shape a lot of my early thinking, politically.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25Well, when they first done the first procedure, we didn't know
0:03:25 > 0:03:28and we were told initially that everything's fine...
0:03:28 > 0:03:32We've put together a programme which tries to tackle
0:03:32 > 0:03:35some of the problems that we have within our health system.
0:03:35 > 0:03:39Our contract for cancer will give a diagnosis or the all-clear
0:03:39 > 0:03:42within 28 days, and that will make a big difference
0:03:42 > 0:03:46to many people for whom cancer is a big problem.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49We're going to end the postcode lottery in new treatments and
0:03:49 > 0:03:52diseases and we're going to end the anomalies between
0:03:52 > 0:03:56health and social care, where people have to pay for some elements
0:03:56 > 0:03:59of social care, where they get other aspects for free.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02These are some of the challenges that we face in the health service
0:04:02 > 0:04:06that can be put right with a Plaid Cymru government.
0:04:13 > 0:04:17There's nothing inevitable about the next government.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20It's in people's hands, and it's in people's control.
0:04:20 > 0:04:22If people want to do something differently now,
0:04:22 > 0:04:25they have an opportunity to do so.
