0:00:02 > 0:00:04Cardiff is a brilliant place to live. Young people are interested

0:00:04 > 0:00:06in community and are interested in politics.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08I think it's important that we move away from the idea

0:00:08 > 0:00:11that young people don't care about community issues.

0:00:18 > 0:00:20I grew up in Southwark,

0:00:20 > 0:00:24so have been very involved in the community

0:00:24 > 0:00:26and local politics since then.

0:00:26 > 0:00:27I love being a councillor.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29I think local government

0:00:29 > 0:00:32is incredibly important in people's lives.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Being a Liberal is very much about allowing people

0:00:35 > 0:00:36to live their own life.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Trying to help people through a journey of a problem

0:00:39 > 0:00:40is often what we do.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42So, I've lived here for about 14 years.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Community for me means people working together

0:00:45 > 0:00:47and also helping each other out and being there for each other.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50Yeah, I've had the odd thing where, you know, people have said,

0:00:50 > 0:00:54you know, "There's a cat up a tree," um, at 11 o'clock at night,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57and I've gone round to their houses and I've stood there

0:00:57 > 0:00:59and I've tried to get it down myself.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00It's not about money or anything else.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03It's just seeing that people have actually got their answer,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05and if they haven't got the right answer,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08they still appreciate the fact that you went that extra mile for them.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12I'm doing business... Since 1994 I came in this country.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Not everybody is a businessman.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19Mostly, people are local people and are living on normal, basic wages.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23And when they get a tax credit cut and the other things get cut

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and housing benefit cut, then people are upset.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30We need to provide to the society whatever they need.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34The Liberal Democrat is very easy to approach, and if you leave them

0:01:34 > 0:01:36a message, they come back to you.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39As a councillor, you've got to be approachable

0:01:39 > 0:01:43and you've got to be able to be approached at any time.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47I know when I go down town for a pint of milk or whatever,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Margaret, she doesn't send me any more,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52because I might be down there for two or three hours,

0:01:52 > 0:01:54where people stop and have a chat,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56but they also want something sorted or whatever.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59But that's the nature of being a councillor.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02I grew up just a few minutes from here.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05I loved the kind of sense of community there was at the time,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07but I feel like a lot of that has changed

0:02:07 > 0:02:10as people are moving off as part of the regeneration process.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12I want a positive difference to be made to this area.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16There's residents who have lived here for 30, 40 years, um,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18and I think they need someone who actually knows what it's like

0:02:18 > 0:02:21to live in this area for a sustained period of time.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24I think community is a group of people who care about each other.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27People want to be together and to have a space in which to do that.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Um, I...you know, I work as well, and I have a small family,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32but I still find time to do it, cos I think it's really important,

0:02:32 > 0:02:34um, that I do something for my local community.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38No community is too small for the Liberal Democrats to care about.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Wales is famous for its close-knit communities

0:02:42 > 0:02:43and the spirit within them,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47especially where people work together to make the place they live

0:02:47 > 0:02:52a warm, successful, vibrant community.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54The hospitals, the schools, the public services

0:02:54 > 0:02:56that my constituents depend on -

0:02:56 > 0:02:58me and my family, we depend on them, too.

0:02:58 > 0:03:03I want to make sure that everybody has the ability to get a great job,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06to help them keep a roof over their heads and their families.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09I want everybody's child to have the chance to go to a great school.

0:03:09 > 0:03:10If you ring 999,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13I want people to know that the ambulance will arrive on time

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and will take you to a first-class hospital

0:03:15 > 0:03:19with the doctors and nurses there to treat you.

0:03:19 > 0:03:20That's what I want for my family.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22That's what I want for my constituents.
