:00:32. > :00:42.His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the 11th reincarnation of one of
:00:42. > :00:47.Tibet's most senior teacher. Lelung is one of the three famous
:00:47. > :00:52.reincarnated Lamas in Tibet, we call it "Pokyi Tulku Nam Sum". That
:00:52. > :00:54.means the three famous Tulkus of Tibet. He is a man on an
:00:54. > :00:57.extraordinary mission. To rescue his previous incarnation's
:00:57. > :01:01.teachings, lost through the political upheavals of the 20th
:01:01. > :01:06.century. Tibetan Buddhists believe these teachings provide a step by
:01:06. > :01:13.step guide on how to reach enlightenment. Whilst some are lost,
:01:13. > :01:16.the path remains incomplete. And it's not only the teachings that
:01:16. > :01:26.Lelung Rinpoche must find, but the teachers themselves who hold the
:01:26. > :01:36.
:01:36. > :01:43.And he finds himself here, in north-west London, with a daunting
:01:43. > :01:53.task ahead and many responsibilities to juggle. From
:01:53. > :02:14.

:03:59. > :04:04.pair of my brother's old jeans, a T-shit, that was quite jazzy. And a
:04:04. > :04:09.pair of his trainers. I was a bit like, oh! Hi! Look what you're
:04:09. > :04:12.wearing! I can see now that the Buddhist teachings are very
:04:12. > :04:16.important and that they've got to be saved and that if I can help
:04:16. > :04:19.Rinpoche make his life a bit easier here, and he can get on with that
:04:19. > :04:29.work and not have to worry about just living, trying to survive here,
:04:29. > :04:30.
:04:30. > :04:34.The previous Lelungs' teachings have spread far across South East
:04:34. > :04:43.Asia from Tibet. Lelung Rinpoche is focussing his search on India and
:04:43. > :04:47.Mongolia and trying to gain access It is the teachings of the 5th
:04:47. > :04:50.Lelung, who lived in the 1700s, that he is most interested in. His
:04:50. > :04:54.46 volumes contain instruction on everything from health, to deep
:04:54. > :05:04.tantric practice. With clearly written steps on meditation and
:05:04. > :05:12.unparalleled descriptions of It's a lot to digest, but like
:05:12. > :05:15.everyone else, Lelung Rinpoche has still got to eat. It's not always
:05:15. > :05:24.easy having a high lama in your midst, something that Lelung is
:05:24. > :05:28.He's generally very respectful of us in terms of, he'll get up from a
:05:28. > :05:31.chair and say "please sit down". I'm like, "no, I'm fine". He's very
:05:31. > :05:38.aware that it's our house and to get up and stuff, which is
:05:38. > :05:46.obviously hard because he's definitely not used to that. If he
:05:46. > :05:52.was in India, he's a high Lama. He's very important. I feel very
:05:53. > :06:02.luck that I met Connie and her husband and her family here. It's a
:06:03. > :06:04.
:06:04. > :06:09.good example of English people. So I just pray or share my merit with
:06:09. > :06:13.them. It's not just the Dusek family that he has a connection
:06:13. > :06:18.with, but also with their two dogs, three cats, guinea pigs and pet
:06:18. > :06:23.rabbits. Our animals love him always have. Even the ones that
:06:23. > :06:28.aren't that friendly. When our cat was 19 and she was getting really
:06:28. > :06:33.ill and starting to go. He literally put his hands on her, and
:06:33. > :06:38.that was it. Gone. He went in to see her and that was it. Over. Gone.
:06:38. > :06:42."She's gone". That was it. So that was the one thing that we were like,
:06:42. > :06:46."That's the best way to knock em off then". Get Rinpoche to go near
:06:46. > :06:49.them. Out like a light. That the 11th Lelung Rinpoche has
:06:49. > :06:57.adapted so well to his life with the Dushek family is no surprise to
:06:57. > :07:00.leading Tibetan scholar, Robert The human mind is so amazing and
:07:00. > :07:05.the reincarnation process is where the Buddha goes among the ordinary
:07:05. > :07:09.people as an ordinary person in some sense. And then they retain
:07:09. > :07:14.what I call selflessness in action. It doesn't mean you're not there.
:07:14. > :07:17.It means you have tremendous resiliency of identity. In a
:07:17. > :07:22.certain context, you're perfectly normal and you treat other people
:07:22. > :07:25.with great respect. You have a feeling of equality with them. And
:07:25. > :07:28.then in some contexts, in a ritual context or where you're confirming
:07:28. > :07:31.initiation or giving some teaching, then you're acting as a teacher and
:07:31. > :07:41.you act with a certain self- confidence but you don't rigidly
:07:41. > :07:44.Lelung Rinpoche was first asked to the UK by a meditation group, and
:07:44. > :07:52.leading one in Ruislip remains a big part of his practice, alongside
:07:52. > :07:55.his mission to find texts. Once a week they gather in a rented local
:07:55. > :08:05.hall, and after a short discourse on Buddhism, the students simply
:08:05. > :08:22.
:08:22. > :08:27.Old age has made me feel a little bit lethargic but I have noticed
:08:27. > :08:37.the difference if I don't mediate. If I meditate, there's goodness and
:08:37. > :08:38.
:08:38. > :08:41.Generally I think I'm just happy. What can I say? I think if you
:08:41. > :08:51.think about all the things that Buddhism You know, you try to avoid
:08:51. > :08:52.
:08:52. > :08:58.anger and greed and hatred. And I think it makes you happy. I know it
:08:58. > :09:04.hurts, it's like seeing yourself in a mirror. And I don't like the
:09:04. > :09:14.reflection. The previous group was very easy and very nice but not

:09:14. > :09:17.much benefit. This is not very nice, very hard, but great benefit.
:09:17. > :09:20.now, his British students will have to manage without him, as Lelung
:09:20. > :09:29.Rinpoche must travel to south India to host a once in a lifetime
:09:29. > :09:39.These monks fled from the Lelung Valley in Tibet and ever since,

:09:41. > :09:48.Rinpoche has provided for them, Since the 1959 exodus of Tibet,
:09:48. > :09:51.over 100,000 Tibetans now live in India. It's a long way from the
:09:51. > :10:01.Himalayan mountains but for many Tibetans, this has come to feel

:10:48. > :10:58.future of the Lelung lineage. It is to them first that he will transmit

:11:00. > :11:10.the teachings that he strives so When he first become a monk, he was

:11:14. > :11:15.Lelung and his students belong in the Gelugpa tradition of Tibetan
:11:15. > :11:23.Buddhism, which centres on scholastic excellence and
:11:23. > :11:26.intellectual rigour. It also relies heavily on oral transmission.
:11:26. > :11:29.Tibetan Buddhists believe that it is only by hearing a teaching from
:11:29. > :11:36.its true lineage holder that the student becomes ready for the
:11:36. > :11:41.realisation that is based on it. The monks are encouraged to be
:11:41. > :11:49.sceptical. And every day, after dark, they are invited to debate on
:11:49. > :11:59.the "Dharma", or Buddhist teaching, The standing philosopher poses

:18:32. > :18:37.None of them are being paid. They're willing to do it, but some
:18:37. > :18:40.people are coming half a day, some people are coming for three hours.
:18:40. > :18:45.It all has to be organised so we know exactly what everybody is
:18:45. > :18:54.doing. But I do enjoy it. It's become part of my life now. And I
:18:54. > :18:59.don't know what I'd do if I'm not While Connie and the students are

:22:16. > :22:26.work to convert it is well under way. It's not that big, but it's
:22:26. > :22:29.designed the way the Tibetan It's quite exciting. Rinpoche
:22:29. > :22:33.phoned me and said, "What are you doing?" I said, "I'm painting my
:22:33. > :22:43.mum's house." He laughed and said, "That's good." I said, "Why?" He
:22:43. > :22:44.
:22:44. > :22:47.said, "I want you to come and paint Over the following months, work on
:22:47. > :22:54.the centre progresses rapidly and they open a charity shop in the
:22:54. > :23:04.Unlike other spiritual leaders, Lelung does much of the manual work
:23:04. > :23:07.Usually, as a Dharma Centre leader, they don't necessarily form
:23:07. > :23:10.churches, usually, because of the overall idea of the Buddhists today,
:23:10. > :23:20.led by the Dalai Lama, that people should not be competing to convert
:23:20. > :23:23.But they have Dharma Centres and meditation centres. So, the Tibetan
:23:23. > :23:24.Buddhists are doing that. They are having meditation centres without
:23:24. > :23:34.enforcing a kind of religious, denominational, card-carrying
:23:34. > :23:37.Which is why it's hard to count the Buddhists in the West. If you ask
:23:37. > :23:41.someone if they're a Buddhist, they say, "Well, yeah, but I'm also
:23:41. > :23:44.whatever my grandma was. Yes, I meditate and practice." But it's
:23:44. > :23:48.not presented as a card-carrying denominational thing, where you
:23:48. > :23:55.then have to join and then condemn everybody else. That's considered
:23:55. > :24:05.very, very not good in a Buddhist This is the first shrine in the UK
:24:05. > :24:12.But no sooner is the paint dry than Lelung Rinpoche, now a British
:24:12. > :24:19.passport holder, gets his chance to It's very urgent to meet those old

:25:41. > :25:44.Mongolian Tibet is the only country where the Tantra teachings remain.
:25:44. > :25:54.Lelung Rinpoche has the courage and responsibility to shoulder the
:25:54. > :25:55.
:25:55. > :26:00.He can't be sure if he will get to Tibet, as he has to travel via
:26:00. > :26:08.Beijing for final approval from the Chinese officials. If I get a visa,
:26:08. > :26:17.I will also go to Tibet after that. And there is a good chance to get
:26:17. > :26:27.the visa. Excited, but a little apprehensive, he boards his flight
:26:27. > :26:33.

:30:46. > :30:49.my own. I never realised how much hard work was in a charity shop.
:30:49. > :30:53.The amount of stuff that comes in and has to be sorted is
:30:53. > :30:59.overwhelming. I don't think I'm a size 40. I don't think even Louise
:30:59. > :31:04.is. Right. I won't let you not buy People want direction and I'm not a
:31:04. > :31:07.manager or someone who can tell you what to do. A lot of these people
:31:07. > :31:12.are friends who have volunteered and I don't want to be in a

:31:28. > :31:32.Rinpoche arrives in Ulaanbaatar - the capital city of Mongolia. He is

:32:28. > :32:33.Lelung Rinpoche has an appointment with one of Mongolia's most
:32:33. > :32:43.influential practitioners - Kuntu Zangpoe. He's been the driving
:32:43. > :33:13.
:33:13. > :33:16.force in revitalising the Buddhist Tibet and Monoglia who were once
:33:16. > :33:19.known as conquest dynastic societies, and had huge empires.
:33:19. > :33:23.The Mongolian one was even huger than the Tibetan one, as everybody
:33:23. > :33:24.knows. Ghengis Khan is like a proverb. That they managed to
:33:24. > :33:29.become vulnerable, understandably and unfortunately, but
:33:29. > :33:38.demilitarised. It's hard to understand and blessedly, it's
:33:38. > :33:42.amazing. We have something to learn from them. Kuntu Zangpoe has a very
:33:42. > :33:52.special collection. Teachings that have recently been rescued from
:33:52. > :34:03.
:34:03. > :34:08.secret hiding places all over the This collection is now safe but is
:34:08. > :34:14.completely disorganised, and there is no index system. It will take
:34:14. > :34:17.days, if not weeks, to get through it. But that's not all. Kuntu
:34:17. > :34:27.Zangpoe is keen to show Rinpoche the monastery's ancient library,
