:17:19. > :17:25.He persisted, "Of course, dead people don't normally rise,
:17:25. > :17:30."but the laws of science are for normal times.
:17:30. > :17:37."When extreme situations arise, unusual things happen.
:17:37. > :17:40."If you go to black holes, the speed of light
:17:40. > :17:43."or the beginning of time -
:17:43. > :17:49."in those unusual circumstances, unusual things happen."
:17:49. > :17:52.He continued by pressing his point.
:17:52. > :17:57."If it is true that God has stepped into the world
:17:57. > :18:03."in the person of Jesus, then that is not a normal circumstance.
:18:03. > :18:07."Indeed it would be unique.
:18:07. > :18:13."You might expect something pretty unusual about his death."
:18:13. > :18:17.I had to admit the rational nature of the argument.
:18:18. > :18:23."OK," I said, "but that doesn't mean that it actually happened!"
:18:23. > :18:26.I was a barrister at the time
:18:26. > :18:30.and prided myself on my legally trained mind.
:18:30. > :18:34."I will look at the evidence," I said.
:18:34. > :18:41.I did that over the next weeks and came to three conclusions.
:18:41. > :18:47.Firstly, Jesus had clearly died.
:18:47. > :18:50.The Romans were experts at crucifixion
:18:50. > :18:53.and didn't make mistakes.
:18:53. > :18:59.Secondly, many people had clearly testified that they had seen
:18:59. > :19:03.the risen Jesus over a period of weeks.
:19:03. > :19:09.Their accounts struck me as the artless and genuine attempts
:19:09. > :19:15.of eye witnesses to describe real events.
:19:15. > :19:20.Thirdly, and for me, crucially, nothing else explained
:19:20. > :19:26.the transformation of those first Christians
:19:26. > :19:30.from frightened cowards, hiding behind locked doors,
:19:30. > :19:36.denying that they even knew Jesus, into such committed believers
:19:36. > :19:42.that they were prepared to witness to those same enemies
:19:42. > :19:46.and with such authority and conviction
:19:46. > :19:52.that they turned their world upside down in a generation,
:19:52. > :19:56.even though it cost most of them their lives.
:19:57. > :20:00.Much to my surprise and discomfort,
:20:01. > :20:06.I found the evidence pointing to the truth of the Resurrection.
:20:06. > :20:11.Like millions of others before me,
:20:11. > :20:14.I had become convinced of what Jean Vanier calls
:20:14. > :20:22."the most stupendous cosmic reality in the history of the universe".
:20:22. > :20:27.The implications of this are enormous.
:20:27. > :20:30.Firstly, the Resurrection of Jesus
:20:30. > :20:34.is a clear vindication of his claims,
:20:34. > :20:39.his divinity and his death for our sins.
:20:39. > :20:45.It means that he is alive now and can be met today.
:20:45. > :20:49.Here in Coventry and all over the world,
:20:49. > :20:52.we have seen Jesus change the lives
:20:52. > :20:57.of people from very different backgrounds -
:20:57. > :21:04.criminals and professors, homeless and wealthy.
:21:04. > :21:08.Secondly, the Resurrection means there is hope beyond death.
:21:08. > :21:13.It in no way negates the reality and negativity of death,
:21:13. > :21:16.but it does give hope.
:21:16. > :21:21.Death is still an enemy to be faced by all,
:21:21. > :21:25.but it is a defeated enemy.
:21:25. > :21:30.The New Testament celebrates that hope, indeed it flaunts it -
:21:30. > :21:35."Where O death is your sting?"
:21:35. > :21:39.Thirdly, the Resurrection is the pledge and beginning
:21:39. > :21:43.of Creation's renewal.
:21:43. > :21:51.Eric Mascall calls this "the ultimate transfiguration of matter".
:21:51. > :21:57.The Resurrection affirms the goodness of God's creation.
:21:57. > :22:01.This is not "pie in the sky when you die".
:22:01. > :22:05.When Jesus rose, he didn't leave creation behind.
:22:06. > :22:09.He kept his physicality.
:22:09. > :22:14.We look forward not to salvation from the world
:22:14. > :22:22.but to the salvation of the world - a new Heaven and a new Earth.
:22:22. > :22:30.This indeed is good news, but it is also politically subversive.
:22:30. > :22:36.The Resurrection proclaims that Jesus is Lord.
:22:36. > :22:41.It declares God's claim on his world.
:22:41. > :22:46.It gives us a glimpse of the kind of world we are going to be
:22:46. > :22:52.and encourages us to work towards that world now.
:22:52. > :22:56.I have been a follower of Jesus for 40 years now,
:22:56. > :23:00.and he has never let me down.
:23:00. > :23:04.The risen Jesus brings the most exciting,
:23:04. > :23:09.practical and rewarding revolution to life.
:23:09. > :23:15.But don't take my word for it. Look into his claims yourself.
:23:15. > :23:22.I challenge you to read just one of the gospels
