:07:56. > :08:01.Let us pray for God to renew us in the glory of the risen Christ.

:08:01. > :08:04.Lord of all life and power,

:08:04. > :08:07.who through the mighty resurrection of your Son

:08:07. > :08:14.overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him,

:08:14. > :08:20.grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ,

:08:20. > :08:24.may reign with him in glory,

:08:24. > :08:27.to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour,

:08:27. > :08:32.glory and might, now and in all eternity.

:08:32. > :08:39.Amen.

:08:39. > :08:43.A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

:08:43. > :08:46.Then Peter began to speak to them -

:08:46. > :08:52."I truly understand that God shows no partiality,

:08:52. > :08:56."but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right

:08:56. > :08:59."is acceptable to him.

:08:59. > :09:03."You know the message he sent to the people of Israel,

:09:03. > :09:10."preaching peace by Jesus Christ - he is Lord of all.

:09:10. > :09:13."That message spread throughout Judea,

:09:13. > :09:18."beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced -

:09:18. > :09:26."how God anointed Jesus of Nazarethwith the Holy Spirit and with power,

:09:26. > :09:29."how he went about doing good

:09:29. > :09:33."and healing all who were oppressed by the devil,

:09:33. > :09:36."for God was with him.

:09:36. > :09:43."We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem.

:09:43. > :09:47."They put him to death by hanging him on a tree,

:09:47. > :09:53."but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear,

:09:53. > :10:00."not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses,

:10:00. > :10:06."and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

:10:06. > :10:10."He commanded us to preach to the people

:10:10. > :10:14."and to testify that he is the one ordained by God

:10:15. > :10:19."as judge of the living and the dead.

:10:19. > :10:24."All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him

:10:25. > :10:30."receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

:10:31. > :10:34.This is the word of the Lord.

:10:34. > :10:44.Thanks be to God.

:10:44. > :10:44.

:10:44. > :12:26.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 153 seconds

:12:26. > :12:36.# Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

:12:36. > :12:42.

:12:42. > :12:52.# I am the first and the last Says the Lord, and the living one

:12:52. > :12:55.

:12:55. > :13:05.# I was dead, and behold I am alive for evermore

:13:05. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:30.# Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

:13:30. > :13:32.

:13:32. > :13:41.Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

:13:41. > :13:51.ALL: Glory to you, O Lord.

:13:51. > :13:51.

:13:51. > :13:54.Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark,

:13:54. > :13:58.Mary Magdalene came to the tomb

:13:58. > :14:00.and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.

:14:00. > :14:04.So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple,

:14:04. > :14:07.the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them,

:14:08. > :14:10."They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,

:14:10. > :14:14."and we do not know where they have laid him."

:14:14. > :14:18.Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb.

:14:18. > :14:21.The two were running together,

:14:21. > :14:26.but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

:14:26. > :14:30.He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there,

:14:30. > :14:33.but he did not go in.

:14:33. > :14:37.Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb.

:14:37. > :14:40.He saw the linen wrappings lying there,

:14:40. > :14:43.and the cloth that had been on Jesus' head,

:14:43. > :14:49.not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.

:14:49. > :14:53.Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first,

:14:53. > :14:56.also went in, and he saw and believed,

:14:56. > :14:59.for as yet they did not understand the scripture,

:14:59. > :15:02.that he must rise from the dead.

:15:02. > :15:09.Then the disciples returned to their homes.

:15:09. > :15:14.This is the Gospel of the Lord.

:15:14. > :15:17.ALL: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

:15:17. > :15:20.ALL: # Praise to you, O Christ

:15:20. > :15:30.# Praise to you, O Christ. #

:15:30. > :15:30.

:15:30. > :16:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 153 seconds

:16:40. > :16:43.Heavenly Father, help us to listen to your word with understanding,

:16:43. > :16:46.to receive it with faith, and to obey it with courage,

:16:46. > :16:49.for Jesus' sake.

:16:49. > :16:55.Amen.

:16:55. > :16:58."Absolutely absurd" -

:16:58. > :17:02.I think those were the words I used many years ago

:17:02. > :17:07.when a friend told me that he had come to believe

:17:07. > :17:11.that Jesus had risen from the dead.

:17:11. > :17:15."Dead men don't rise," I stated with confidence.

:17:16. > :17:19."You have taken leave of your senses."

:17:19. > :17:25.He persisted, "Of course, dead people don't normally rise,

:17:25. > :17:30."but the laws of science are for normal times.

:17:30. > :17:37."When extreme situations arise, unusual things happen.

:17:37. > :17:40."If you go to black holes, the speed of light

:17:40. > :17:43."or the beginning of time -

:17:43. > :17:49."in those unusual circumstances, unusual things happen."

:17:49. > :17:52.He continued by pressing his point.

:17:52. > :17:57."If it is true that God has stepped into the world

:17:57. > :18:03."in the person of Jesus, then that is not a normal circumstance.

:18:03. > :18:07."Indeed it would be unique.

:18:07. > :18:13."You might expect something pretty unusual about his death."

:18:13. > :18:17.I had to admit the rational nature of the argument.

:18:18. > :18:23."OK," I said, "but that doesn't mean that it actually happened!"

:18:23. > :18:26.I was a barrister at the time

:18:26. > :18:30.and prided myself on my legally trained mind.

:18:30. > :18:34."I will look at the evidence," I said.

:18:34. > :18:41.I did that over the next weeks and came to three conclusions.

:18:41. > :18:47.Firstly, Jesus had clearly died.

:18:47. > :18:50.The Romans were experts at crucifixion

:18:50. > :18:53.and didn't make mistakes.

:18:53. > :18:59.Secondly, many people had clearly testified that they had seen

:18:59. > :19:03.the risen Jesus over a period of weeks.

:19:03. > :19:09.Their accounts struck me as the artless and genuine attempts

:19:09. > :19:15.of eye witnesses to describe real events.

:19:15. > :19:20.Thirdly, and for me, crucially, nothing else explained

:19:20. > :19:26.the transformation of those first Christians

:19:26. > :19:30.from frightened cowards, hiding behind locked doors,

:19:30. > :19:36.denying that they even knew Jesus, into such committed believers

:19:36. > :19:42.that they were prepared to witness to those same enemies

:19:42. > :19:46.and with such authority and conviction

:19:46. > :19:52.that they turned their world upside down in a generation,

:19:52. > :19:56.even though it cost most of them their lives.

:19:57. > :20:00.Much to my surprise and discomfort,

:20:01. > :20:06.I found the evidence pointing to the truth of the Resurrection.

:20:06. > :20:11.Like millions of others before me,

:20:11. > :20:14.I had become convinced of what Jean Vanier calls

:20:14. > :20:22."the most stupendous cosmic reality in the history of the universe".

:20:22. > :20:27.The implications of this are enormous.

:20:27. > :20:30.Firstly, the Resurrection of Jesus

:20:30. > :20:34.is a clear vindication of his claims,

:20:34. > :20:39.his divinity and his death for our sins.

:20:39. > :20:45.It means that he is alive now and can be met today.

:20:45. > :20:49.Here in Coventry and all over the world,

:20:49. > :20:52.we have seen Jesus change the lives

:20:52. > :20:57.of people from very different backgrounds -

:20:57. > :21:04.criminals and professors, homeless and wealthy.

:21:04. > :21:08.Secondly, the Resurrection means there is hope beyond death.

:21:08. > :21:13.It in no way negates the reality and negativity of death,

:21:13. > :21:16.but it does give hope.

:21:16. > :21:21.Death is still an enemy to be faced by all,

:21:21. > :21:25.but it is a defeated enemy.

:21:25. > :21:30.The New Testament celebrates that hope, indeed it flaunts it -

:21:30. > :21:35."Where O death is your sting?"

:21:35. > :21:39.Thirdly, the Resurrection is the pledge and beginning

:21:39. > :21:43.of Creation's renewal.

:21:43. > :21:51.Eric Mascall calls this "the ultimate transfiguration of matter".

:21:51. > :21:57.The Resurrection affirms the goodness of God's creation.

:21:57. > :22:01.This is not "pie in the sky when you die".

:22:01. > :22:05.When Jesus rose, he didn't leave creation behind.

:22:06. > :22:09.He kept his physicality.

:22:09. > :22:14.We look forward not to salvation from the world

:22:14. > :22:22.but to the salvation of the world - a new Heaven and a new Earth.

:22:22. > :22:30.This indeed is good news, but it is also politically subversive.

:22:30. > :22:36.The Resurrection proclaims that Jesus is Lord.

:22:36. > :22:41.It declares God's claim on his world.

:22:41. > :22:46.It gives us a glimpse of the kind of world we are going to be

:22:46. > :22:52.and encourages us to work towards that world now.

:22:52. > :22:56.I have been a follower of Jesus for 40 years now,

:22:56. > :23:00.and he has never let me down.

:23:00. > :23:04.The risen Jesus brings the most exciting,

:23:04. > :23:09.practical and rewarding revolution to life.

:23:09. > :23:15.But don't take my word for it. Look into his claims yourself.

:23:15. > :23:22.I challenge you to read just one of the gospels

:23:22. > :23:32.and come to your own conclusion.

:23:32. > :23:32.

:23:32. > :25:57.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 153 seconds

:25:57. > :25:59.We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty

:25:59. > :26:03.Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

:26:03. > :26:06.We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

:26:06. > :26:10.eternally begotten of the Father

:26:10. > :26:16.God from God, light from light, true God from true God

:26:17. > :26:20.Begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father

:26:20. > :26:24.Through him all things were made

:26:24. > :26:28.For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

:26:28. > :26:32.was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,

:26:32. > :26:35.and was made man.

:26:35. > :26:39.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

:26:39. > :26:42.he suffered death and was buried.

:26:42. > :26:47.On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures

:26:47. > :26:49.He ascended into heaven

:26:49. > :26:52.and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

:26:53. > :26:57.He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

:26:57. > :27:00.and his kingdom will have no end.

:27:00. > :27:03.We believe in the Holy Spirit

:27:03. > :27:06.The Lord, the giver of life

:27:06. > :27:08.Who proceeds from the Father and the Son

:27:08. > :27:12.With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified

:27:12. > :27:15.He has spoken through the prophets.

:27:15. > :27:19.We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

:27:19. > :27:22.We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

:27:23. > :27:25.We look for the resurrection of the dead,

:27:25. > :27:28.and the life of the world to come.

:27:28. > :27:30.Amen.

:27:30. > :27:40.In joy and love, let us pray to the Father.

:27:40. > :27:44.

:27:44. > :27:48.50 years ago, our cathedral was consecrated

:27:48. > :27:51.alongside the bombed-out remains of the old.

:27:51. > :27:54.To mark our Golden Jubilee year,

:27:54. > :27:57.we are designating the old cathedral ruins

:27:57. > :28:00.as a memorial to civilians killed, injured

:28:00. > :28:04.and traumatised by conflict worldwide.

:28:04. > :28:07.During the 40 days of Lent

:28:07. > :28:13.we have been focusing on the impactof war in our prayers and reflection.

:28:13. > :28:17.Today, we bring this cycle of prayer to its conclusion

:28:17. > :28:20.as we pray in the light of the hope and joy

:28:20. > :28:30.of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

:28:30. > :28:31.

:28:32. > :28:33.Traditionally, the ruins have been a focal point

:28:33. > :28:35.for remembrance of the destruction of the cathedral in 1940.

:28:36. > :28:39.More than 70 years on, we recognise the damage

:28:39. > :28:43.still being caused by aerial bombing around the world,

:28:43. > :28:49.and in particular, its devastating impact on civilians.

:28:49. > :28:54.And so let us pray for the coming of the rule of the Prince of Peace.

:28:54. > :28:58.Lord of life, how we long for you to usher in the time

:28:58. > :29:04.when nation will no longer take up sword against nation.

:29:04. > :29:11.Risen Lord Jesus, to your world disfigured by aerial bombing,

:29:11. > :29:16.bring your new life of healing and hope.

:29:16. > :29:21.The environment is often overlooked as a victim of violent conflict,

:29:21. > :29:26.as toxic chemicals are spilled and the soil is contaminated.

:29:26. > :29:30.And so let us pray for the healing of the Earth

:29:30. > :29:32.and for all who are working

:29:32. > :29:37.to reverse the damage done to our fragile planet.

:29:37. > :29:42.Lord of life, how we long for an end to the brutality

:29:42. > :29:46.which hurts the world you created for us to enjoy.

:29:46. > :29:49.Risen Lord Jesus,

:29:49. > :29:54.to your world wounded by the environmental effects of war,

:29:54. > :30:00.bring your new life of healing and hope.

:30:00. > :30:03.In many countries where there is conflict,

:30:03. > :30:07.children are often recruited by military groups.

:30:07. > :30:10.The scars left by this experience of war

:30:10. > :30:13.are deep-rooted and long-lasting.

:30:13. > :30:18.And so let us pray for an end to the abuse of children

:30:18. > :30:24.and for the healing of lives overshadowed by conflict.

:30:24. > :30:28.How we long for the world's children to experience

:30:28. > :30:33.the warmth of your love and the hope of a future without violence.

:30:33. > :30:36.Risen Lord Jesus,

:30:36. > :30:40.to your world shamed by the exploitation of children,

:30:40. > :30:47.bring your new life of healing and hope.

:30:47. > :30:49.War is one of the main reasons

:30:49. > :30:54.why people are forced to leave their homes as refugees,

:30:54. > :31:00.while suspicion of migrants is at an all-time high in many nations.

:31:00. > :31:03.And so let us pray for an end to the conflicts

:31:03. > :31:06.which cause the mass movement of people

:31:06. > :31:11.and for the gift of hospitality to those who need it.

:31:11. > :31:15.How we long for those far from home to find a welcome

:31:15. > :31:19.that reflects your love for the whole human family.

:31:19. > :31:22.Risen Lord Jesus,

:31:23. > :31:26.to your world confronted by the suffering of refugees,

:31:26. > :31:33.bring your new life of healing and hope.

:31:33. > :31:36.Jesus, Lord of life

:31:36. > :31:39.In your mercy, hear us, accept our prayers,

:31:39. > :31:48.and be with us always. Amen.

:31:48. > :31:51.Alleluia! Christ is risen.

:31:51. > :31:55.He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

:31:55. > :31:59.The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said,

:31:59. > :32:02."Peace be with you."

:32:02. > :32:04.Then were they glad when they saw the Lord.

:32:04. > :32:07.Alleluia!

:32:07. > :32:09.The peace of the Lord be always with you

:32:10. > :32:14.And also with you. Alleluia!
