:00:17. > :00:34.Good morning. And happy Easter. Today is the most important day in
:00:35. > :00:37.the church calendar, when millions of Christian believers or around the
:00:38. > :00:42.world focus their worship on the resurrection of Jesus Christ 2000
:00:43. > :00:45.years ago. Today, we have come to Leicester Cathedral to join the
:00:46. > :00:48.congregation here in their Easter celebrations as they welcome friends
:00:49. > :00:52.and visitors were all over this great city. Before the service gets
:00:53. > :00:58.underway, let's have a quick word with the Dean, David Monteith. Thank
:00:59. > :01:05.you for having us. You had an early start today. Yes, we gathered at
:01:06. > :01:08.6:30am. We lit the Easter fire and baptised and confirmed new
:01:09. > :01:12.Christians. It was a joyous occasion. What can we expect to see
:01:13. > :01:17.and hear this morning? We will have the best of our Church of England
:01:18. > :01:20.Eucharist, a holy Communion service, with glorious music. It will have a
:01:21. > :01:25.very Leicester feel, as young Asian dancers will be part of the service.
:01:26. > :01:28.Will there be a chance to think and pray for people around the world?
:01:29. > :01:33.Easter reminds us of the pain and glory of God, so we will be thinking
:01:34. > :01:38.a lot about is very and particularly about those in South Korea today. I
:01:39. > :01:42.am sure will appreciate the opportunity to stop and reflect. I
:01:43. > :01:46.will let you get ready. Our is today service from Leicester Cathedral
:01:47. > :01:50.begins as the Dean hands water from the font to the Bishop of
:01:51. > :01:51.Leicester, for him to invite everybody to renew with their
:01:52. > :02:30.baptismal vows. In baptism, God calls us to new
:02:31. > :02:37.life. We die with Christ to all that destroys, and rise to live with him
:02:38. > :02:40.forever. Therefore on this Easter morning, following our service of
:02:41. > :02:43.baptism and confirmation at dawn, I ask you to renew your baptismal vows
:02:44. > :02:58.in the light of Christ gloriously risen from the dead. Do you reject
:02:59. > :03:04.evil? I reject evil. And all its many forms? And all its many forms.
:03:05. > :03:10.And all its empty promises? And all its empty promises. God has claimed
:03:11. > :03:18.us as his own. In Jesus Christ, our risen Lord, he has brought us out of
:03:19. > :03:22.darkness! He has made us light to the world! Let us now declare our
:03:23. > :03:28.faith in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ died for
:03:29. > :03:33.our sins in accordance with the Scriptures. He was buried. He was
:03:34. > :03:38.raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
:03:39. > :03:46.Afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles.
:03:47. > :06:21.This we have received, and this we believe. Amen.
:06:22. > :06:29.In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
:06:30. > :06:41.Amen. Peace be with you. And also with you. Alleluia! Christ is risen.
:06:42. > :06:44.He is risen indeed. Alleluia! Welcome to Leicester Cathedral. We
:06:45. > :06:48.come with visitors from across the diocese. For those of you sharing
:06:49. > :06:53.this occasion at home and with Christians around the world, to
:06:54. > :07:17.celebrate the joy of the resurrection on this Easter morning.
:07:18. > :07:31.Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
:07:32. > :07:48.Laudamus te, benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te.
:07:49. > :08:08.Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam: Domine Deus, Rex
:08:09. > :08:20.coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite.
:08:21. > :08:32.Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius
:08:33. > :08:42.Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi. Miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata
:08:43. > :09:30.mundi. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus.
:09:31. > :09:57.Quoniam to solus altissimus. Quoniam tu solus Dominus.
:09:58. > :10:11.In gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Let us pray that we may walk the
:10:12. > :10:15.risen life of Christ in glory. God of glory, by the raising of your Son
:10:16. > :10:27.you have broken the chains of death and hell: fill your Church with
:10:28. > :10:31.faith and hope. For a new day has dawned, and the way to life stands
:10:32. > :10:35.open in our Saviour, Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you in
:10:36. > :10:48.the unity of the Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen.
:10:49. > :10:54.A reading from the prophecy of Jeremiah. At that time, says the
:10:55. > :10:58.Lord, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall
:10:59. > :11:02.be my people. Thus says the Lord: The people who survived the sword
:11:03. > :11:06.found grace in the wilderness. When Israel sought for rest, the Lord
:11:07. > :11:10.appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting
:11:11. > :11:15.love. Therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Again I will
:11:16. > :11:21.build you, and you shall be built, O Virgin Israel! Again you shall take
:11:22. > :11:28.your tambourines, and go forth in the dance of the merrymakers. Again
:11:29. > :11:32.you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria. The planters
:11:33. > :11:36.shall plant, and shall enjoy the fruit. For there shall be a day when
:11:37. > :11:44.sentinels will call in the hill country of Ephraim: "Come, let us go
:11:45. > :11:48.up to Zion, to the Lord our God." Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be
:11:49. > :13:49.to God. A reading from the Acts of the
:13:50. > :13:54.Apostles. Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of
:13:55. > :13:57.Cornelius. "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in
:13:58. > :14:04.every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable
:14:05. > :14:08.to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching
:14:09. > :14:13.peace by Jesus Christ - he is Lord of all. That message spread
:14:14. > :14:22.throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John
:14:23. > :14:26.announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and
:14:27. > :14:29.with power: how he went about doing good and healing all who were
:14:30. > :14:35.oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all
:14:36. > :14:41.that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by
:14:42. > :14:45.hanging him on a tree. But God raised him on the third day and
:14:46. > :14:50.allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen
:14:51. > :14:56.by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from
:14:57. > :15:01.the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he
:15:02. > :15:06.is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the
:15:07. > :15:09.prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him
:15:10. > :15:11.receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Hear the word of the
:15:12. > :15:38.Lord. Thanks be to God. # Alleluia, Jesus risen Lord of
:15:39. > :15:54.life. # Alleluia.
:15:55. > :15:59.# Jesus risen Lord of life. # Alleluia.
:16:00. > :16:18.# Alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with
:16:19. > :16:34.you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
:16:35. > :16:36.Glory to you, O Lord. After the sabbath, as the first day of the
:16:37. > :16:38.week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
:16:39. > :16:41.sabbath, as the first day of the week And suddenly there was a great
:16:42. > :16:45.earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came
:16:46. > :16:48.and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like
:16:49. > :16:55.lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards
:16:56. > :16:59.shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, "Do not
:17:00. > :17:06.be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
:17:07. > :17:13.He is not here; for he has been raised," as he said. "Come, see the
:17:14. > :17:17.place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, 'He has been
:17:18. > :17:21.raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee;
:17:22. > :17:25.there you will see him.' This is my message for you." So they left the
:17:26. > :17:36.tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
:17:37. > :17:39.Suddenly Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" And they came to him,
:17:40. > :17:48.took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to
:17:49. > :17:52.them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there
:17:53. > :18:04.they will see me.'" This is the Gospel of Christ.
:18:05. > :19:11.What is the connection between your belly button and today - Easter Day?
:19:12. > :19:21.Our belly button tells us we once had an umbilical cord. We had a
:19:22. > :19:24.beginning. We were born! The site of the empty tomb in the Holy
:19:25. > :19:27.Sepulchre, Jerusalem is a place of Christian pilgrimage. 90 of us from
:19:28. > :19:36.this diocese were there last November. For over 1,000 years it
:19:37. > :19:40.has been called in Greek, the omphalos, the navel, the belly
:19:41. > :19:47.button of the world. This is the place where many Christians believe
:19:48. > :19:50.that the world was born afresh. Matthew's gospel, like the book of
:19:51. > :19:56.Genesis, starts with its own 'In the beginning'. Now on the first day of
:19:57. > :19:59.the week at dawn, in other words, 'in the beginning', Mary Magdalene
:20:00. > :20:05.and the other Mary think they are coming to a death - but instead
:20:06. > :20:10.discover birth. It is like the wise men in TS Eliot's poem who say, were
:20:11. > :20:19.we led all that way for birth or death? Our belly buttons remind us
:20:20. > :20:25.of birth but also of mortality. Birth and death are very close, just
:20:26. > :20:28.marked by a time gap. The writer Iris Murdoch once said that if you
:20:29. > :20:35.really want to understand another person, ask of what they are afraid.
:20:36. > :20:38.Despite living longer, despite the advances of medicine, despite
:20:39. > :20:45.hospice care, our fears about death have not disappeared. Forthcoming
:20:46. > :20:48.proposed legislation about Assisted Suicide, in my view, is yet another
:20:49. > :21:04.attempt to control this uncontrollable fear. I am very
:21:05. > :21:07.conscious this Easter morning of those who are confused and angry,
:21:08. > :21:10.families who are in grief and communities in great shock. Let me
:21:11. > :21:19.speak of facing fear in my own life - as I recall looking at my younger
:21:20. > :21:30.sister, lying in her coffin. A life cut short. An absence. An aching
:21:31. > :21:37.grief. Did I just see pallid death or was there life and birth even
:21:38. > :21:41.there? Then I saw how fear is still at work in me. I should have
:21:42. > :21:46.realised, growing up in Northern Ireland during the 70s and 80s, that
:21:47. > :21:50.violence breeds fear. Having recognised fear, I am discovering I
:21:51. > :21:55.can live beyond it. God's grace is much more. There seems to be a
:21:56. > :22:07.fearless space already cleared as if someone has prepared it for me. My
:22:08. > :22:11.belly button will decay when I die. Like Richard III's remains found
:22:12. > :22:15.yards from where I stand, I too will return to the earth. Like him I am
:22:16. > :22:22.also marked with a baptismal cross, a scar of new birth and that will
:22:23. > :22:29.not decay. John's gospel tells us that water and blood flowed from
:22:30. > :22:46.Jesus's side - evidence of death? But where else does water and blood
:22:47. > :22:49.flow? Of course it's birth! This morning at 6:30am our bishop
:22:50. > :22:53.baptised 11 people. St Paul says that baptism is a burial into
:22:54. > :22:57.Christ's death. Our candidates were drenched, like the waters of the
:22:58. > :23:06.deepest ocean. For Christians, the chaos and fear of death has to first
:23:07. > :23:12.be embraced. The Marys go to the tomb to face the cold, the slab, the
:23:13. > :23:17.shroud. Instead they met light and life. In stark contrast, the guards
:23:18. > :23:23.were unable to perceive this new thing and are gripped by fear. St
:23:24. > :23:34.Matthew says they became like dead men. The Marys discover a birth out
:23:35. > :23:37.of death. But the guards also make an Easter discovery. They find that
:23:38. > :23:42.what they took for life is death. They choose to live as frightened
:23:43. > :23:44.people. To both the fearful and the hopeful, the risen Jesus says - Do
:23:45. > :23:52.not be afraid. Here in Leicester, I have seen that
:23:53. > :24:00.it is possible to move beyond fear to a life reborn, a new humanity.
:24:01. > :24:05.Emily is a Pioneer Youth Minister who runs a Youth Church in our
:24:06. > :24:10.diocese. She grew up without a faith. There was a bible in her home
:24:11. > :24:18.on the second shelf down, where all the fiction was kept. When her dad
:24:19. > :24:22.suffered and died from cancer, fear came to the surface and was met by
:24:23. > :24:26.love as she found herself unexpectedly going to church. She
:24:27. > :24:30.became hungry to know more and read and studied and questioned. Two
:24:31. > :24:35.years later she was baptised and confirmed. Two years on, she works
:24:36. > :24:38.with young people, many of whom lack self-esteem, carry great burdens for
:24:39. > :24:46.their age and know how debilitating fear can be. Emily says discovering
:24:47. > :24:54.all this was a little embarrassing and very inconvenient but it has
:24:55. > :25:12.been a rebirth. The world is no longer bleak. It is bleak for some.
:25:13. > :25:15.Derogatory headlines about the poor don't help, as demand for food banks
:25:16. > :25:18.accelerates. Christ was poor and his Easter people know that God's new
:25:19. > :25:32.humanity is most especially for those in need. We've been here many
:25:33. > :25:35.times before. In 1753 Charles Wesley founder of Methodism said, "So
:25:36. > :25:38.wickedly, devilishly false, is that common objection, they are poor,
:25:39. > :25:41.only because they are idle." Yet like then, the majority of children
:25:42. > :26:00.in poverty come from hard working households. They are not idle. They
:26:01. > :26:03.simply don't have enough money. Adjacent to the cathedral, at
:26:04. > :26:07.churches in the city centre, and across this diocese, those who have
:26:08. > :26:10.been freed from fear, reach out in generosity to feed their neighbours
:26:11. > :26:13.and counter fear- mongering with the light of truth. Easter shows that
:26:14. > :26:20.fear is not the last word. Through our baptism we meet sisters and
:26:21. > :26:23.brothers of every hue. Unlike the stories which speak of the church in
:26:24. > :26:28.terms of schism and dissent, instead I find community. When it comes to
:26:29. > :26:30.living with difference, whether that is race, culture, gender or
:26:31. > :26:40.sexuality, local churches and cathedrals are actually good at
:26:41. > :26:43.living with diversity. We are still learning but we keep discovering a
:26:44. > :26:50.deeper solidarity which overcomes fear. When the English Defence
:26:51. > :26:53.League decided to come to Leicester, we came together in this cathedral
:26:54. > :27:03.recognising that fearful vitriol aimed at one community was vitriol
:27:04. > :27:06.aimed at us all. Every person finds welcome here as, in Christ, we
:27:07. > :27:20.discover that difference need not mean fear. I know fear. The world
:27:21. > :27:24.knows fear. At times the church can be fearful too. Yet our ultimate
:27:25. > :27:35.fear, death, is defeated through the persistence of Christ's love now,
:27:36. > :27:44.revealed in the Resurrection. Shaped by this God, a new humanity is born
:27:45. > :27:55.whose song is Alleluia! Do not be afraid!
:27:56. > :28:21.# O sons and daughters let us sing. # The King of heav'n the glorious
:28:22. > :28:28.King. # O'er death today rose triumphing:
:28:29. > :28:34.Alleluia. # That Easter morn at break of day.
:28:35. > :28:37.# The faithful women went their way. # To seek the tomb where Jesus lay:
:28:38. > :28:54.Alleluia. # An angel clad in white they see.
:28:55. > :28:56.# Who sat and spake unto the three. # "Your Lord doth go to Galilee."
:28:57. > :29:11.Alleluia. # That night th'apostles met in
:29:12. > :29:16.fear. # Amidst them came their Lord most
:29:17. > :29:18.dear. # And said, 'my peace be on all
:29:19. > :29:32.here.' Alleluia. # On this most holy day of days.
:29:33. > :29:37.# To God your hearts and voices raise.
:29:38. > :29:56.# In laud and jubilee and praise: Alleluia.
:29:57. > :30:09.In joy and hope we pray. Lord our Light and our Salvation: Hear our
:30:10. > :30:12.prayer. That our risen Saviour may fill us with the joy of his glorious
:30:13. > :30:17.and life-giving resurrection, and that we may find strength in the
:30:18. > :30:28.good news of Easter. Lord our Light and our Salvation: Hear our prayer.
:30:29. > :30:33.That he may provide for those who lack food, work, or shelter and help
:30:34. > :30:38.us to do his will. We pray for our city, to continue to be a safe and
:30:39. > :30:47.hospitable place for all. Lord our Light and our Salvation: Hear our
:30:48. > :30:51.prayer. That he may reveal the light of his
:30:52. > :31:03.presence to the sick, the weak and the dying. And especially at this
:31:04. > :31:08.time, to those who have lost their loved ones in the ferry disaster of
:31:09. > :31:12.the coast of South Korea. We pray that God may have mercy upon the
:31:13. > :31:18.people of Syria, of all the Middle East and every place of war and
:31:19. > :31:27.conflict. We pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Lord our Light and our
:31:28. > :31:31.Salvation: Hear our prayer. We give thanks for those who have
:31:32. > :31:38.gone before us and pray for trust and faith that Jesus Christ is the
:31:39. > :31:41.pioneer of our salvation. Bring us with all the departed to glory
:31:42. > :31:44.through his death and resurrection, and surround with your saints and
:31:45. > :31:48.angels those who have died trusting your promises. Lord our Light and
:31:49. > :32:32.our Salvation: Hear our prayer. # Hai dunia ka raja yesu hai dunia
:32:33. > :32:36.ka. # Hai dunia ka raja yesu sath hai
:32:37. > :32:42.tere vo. # Na ab tu ro ki yesu tujhe pyar
:32:43. > :32:44.karta. # O-oh.

:33:39. > :33:40.# Oh Yesu mujhe pyar karta. # O-oh.
:33:41. > :33:43.# Oh Yesu mujhe pyar karta. # O-oh.
:33:44. > :34:05.# Vo sabse hai pyar karta aj khushiya manao logo.
:34:06. > :34:14.Merciful Father. Accept these prayers, for the sake of your Son,
:34:15. > :34:20.our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. Please stand. The risen Christ, the
:34:21. > :34:23.Light of the World, came and stood among his disciples and said, "Peace
:34:24. > :34:33.be with you." Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. Alleluia.
:34:34. > :34:35.The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer
:34:36. > :37:33.one another a sign of peace. Be present, be present, Lord Jesus
:37:34. > :37:45.Christ, our risen high priest, and make yourself known in the breaking
:37:46. > :37:52.of the bread. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your
:37:53. > :37:55.hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our
:37:56. > :37:57.God. It is right to give Let us give thanks to the Lord our
:37:58. > :38:01.praise. It is indeed right, our Let us give thanks to the Lord our
:38:02. > :38:04.and our joy, always and everywhere Let us give thanks to the Lord our
:38:05. > :38:07.to give you thanks, almighty and eternal Father. And in these days of
:38:08. > :38:11.Easter to celebrate with joyful eternal Father. And in these days of
:38:12. > :38:17.hearts the memory of your wonderful works. For by the mystery of his
:38:18. > :38:21.passion Jesus Christ, your risen Son, has conquered the powers of
:38:22. > :38:28.death and hell and restored in Son, has conquered the powers of
