:00:35. > :00:37.Welcome to Liverpool Cathedral, and to this Choral Eucharist

:00:38. > :00:40.for the Day of Pentecost - sometimes regarded

:00:41. > :00:48.For Christians, Pentecost marks the 50th day after Easter.

:00:49. > :00:52.For the past seven weeks, we have celebrated with great joy

:00:53. > :00:55.our Lord's resurrection from the dead.

:00:56. > :00:59.Recalling his appearances to the first disciples,

:01:00. > :01:10.we have rejoiced in his risen presence with us too.

:01:11. > :01:13.On Ascension Day, we remembered his exaltation to his Father's

:01:14. > :01:16.right hand, his return to the throne before which every knee

:01:17. > :01:21.shall bow and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord.

:01:22. > :01:27.And, for the past ten days, we have been waiting prayerfully

:01:28. > :01:31.and expectantly for the anniversary we celebrate today of

:01:32. > :01:35.the moment when he poured out the promised Holy Spirit on

:01:36. > :01:39.the community of his followers, empowering them for the mission

:01:40. > :01:42.he had entrusted to them, filling them with joy

:01:43. > :01:50.and boldness in the proclamation of the gospel.

:01:51. > :01:57.As we recall, the transformation brought about by the Spirit

:01:58. > :02:00.in the apostles, we also seek it in our own churches and lives.

:02:01. > :02:09.Pentecost is for every day, and we are all Pentecostals,

:02:10. > :02:12.because we all seek to live day by day in the power

:02:13. > :07:34.Grace, mercy and peace, from God our Father

:07:35. > :07:36.and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

:07:37. > :07:42.Alleluia. Christ is risen.

:07:43. > :07:53.ALL: He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

:07:54. > :09:52.Let us bless the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

:09:53. > :10:06.ALL: Let us praise and bless God for ever.

:10:07. > :10:54.# O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ

:10:55. > :11:15.# That takest away the sins of the world

:11:16. > :11:37.# Thou that takest away the sins of the world

:11:38. > :11:55.# Thou that takest away the sins of the world

:11:56. > :12:16.# Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father

:12:17. > :13:24.# Art most high in the glory of God the Father

:13:25. > :14:00.Holy Spirit, sent by the Father, ignite in us your holy fire.

:14:01. > :14:06.Strengthen your children with the gift of faith,

:14:07. > :14:09.revive your Church with the breath of love, and renew

:14:10. > :14:12.the face of the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

:14:13. > :14:27.A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

:14:28. > :14:30.When the day of Pentecost had come, they were

:14:31. > :14:36.And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like

:14:37. > :14:39.the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire

:14:40. > :14:47.Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them,

:14:48. > :14:53.All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit

:14:54. > :14:56.and began to speak in other languages,

:14:57. > :15:02.Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven

:15:03. > :15:09.And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered,

:15:10. > :15:16.because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.

:15:17. > :15:23."Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

:15:24. > :15:27.And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own

:15:28. > :15:34.Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia,

:15:35. > :15:38.Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia

:15:39. > :15:43.and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene,

:15:44. > :15:48.and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

:15:49. > :15:52.Cretans and Arabs - in our own languages

:15:53. > :15:57.we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power."

:15:58. > :16:18.# O Lord, how manifold are your works

:16:19. > :16:21.# In wisdom you have made them all

:16:22. > :16:26.# The earth is full of your creatures

:16:27. > :16:33.# There is the sea, spread far and wide

:16:34. > :16:39.# And there move creatures beyond number

:16:40. > :16:48.# There go the ships, and there is that

:16:49. > :16:58.# Leviathan which you have made to play in the deep

:16:59. > :17:12.# All of these look to you to give them their food in due season

:17:13. > :17:18.# When you give it them, they gather it

:17:19. > :17:26.# You open your hand and they are filled with good

:17:27. > :17:33.# When you hide your face they are troubled

:17:34. > :17:38.# When you take away their breath, they die

:17:39. > :17:53.# When you send forth your spirit, they are created

:17:54. > :18:16.# And you renew the face of the earth

:18:17. > :18:21.Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

:18:22. > :18:42.Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father,

:18:43. > :18:49.Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time,

:18:50. > :18:54.Philip, and you still do not know me?

:18:55. > :18:58.Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

:18:59. > :19:02.How can you say, "Show us the Father"?

:19:03. > :19:05.Do you not believe that I am in the Father

:19:06. > :19:12.The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own.

:19:13. > :19:17.But the Father who dwells in me does his works.

:19:18. > :19:22.Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.

:19:23. > :19:26.But, if you do not, then believe me because of

:19:27. > :19:34.Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also

:19:35. > :19:40.do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works

:19:41. > :19:46.than these, because I am going to the Father.

:19:47. > :19:49.I will do whatever you ask in my name,

:19:50. > :19:55.so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

:19:56. > :20:00.If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

:20:01. > :20:03.If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

:20:04. > :20:06.And I will ask the Father, and he will give you

:20:07. > :20:11.another Advocate, to be with you for ever.

:20:12. > :20:14.This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot

:20:15. > :20:21.receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him.

:20:22. > :20:28.You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you."

:20:29. > :22:23.Maybe the words of my mouth and the meditations of all our hearts been

:22:24. > :22:24.out and always acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our rock and

:22:25. > :22:31.Redeemer. Amen. Today is Pentecost, the Christian

:22:32. > :22:36.feast of the Holy Spirit. A day when the defeated

:22:37. > :22:40.and frightened band of Jesus' friends was filled with the very

:22:41. > :22:45.love and life of God and turned into an outward-facing community

:22:46. > :22:50.that would transform the world. God's Holy Spirit is

:22:51. > :22:58.a fountain of sending love. God's Spirit connects us,

:22:59. > :23:04.goes between us, opens us And that is true for individuals

:23:05. > :23:16.and communities - true for me and my family, and also true

:23:17. > :23:24.for our community here in Liverpool. Liverpool is famous for many

:23:25. > :23:27.things and among them is the song they sing in one

:23:28. > :23:31.of our football clubs and, from time to time,

:23:32. > :23:36.the song the whole city sings - As we celebrate Pentecost

:23:37. > :23:47.here, I want to ask, what does that really mean,

:23:48. > :23:51.not walking alone? What does it mean

:23:52. > :23:54.for Christian people? And, in particular

:23:55. > :23:58.at this time, to ask, what does it mean for us

:23:59. > :24:03.as individuals and as a community Let me tell you two of my

:24:04. > :24:16.most precious memories. An hour before my mother died,

:24:17. > :24:20.I entered the hospital room And when she died an hour later, my

:24:21. > :24:33.dad was with her, holding her hand. Years later, when my dad died,

:24:34. > :24:36.I was in the room with him, They did not walk

:24:37. > :25:09.alone on that road. The day before yesterday I was at

:25:10. > :25:12.the funeral of my brother-in-law. He died not walking alone.

:25:13. > :25:14.These are precious memories that not everyone can share.

:25:15. > :25:17.Some of us were not with our loved ones when they died.

:25:18. > :25:25.Here in Liverpool, we remember the 96 who died 27 years ago

:25:26. > :25:30.at Hillsborough, and whose families have had to struggle for so long

:25:31. > :25:39.But the 96 did not walk alone, because the love of their friends

:25:40. > :25:45.and families was around them and has been around them ever since.

:25:46. > :25:49.And the families have not walked alone through these years

:25:50. > :25:53.and decades of struggle, because the love of our community

:25:54. > :25:58.has been around them and is around them still.

:25:59. > :26:08.And in the end, Christian people believe that no-one

:26:09. > :26:23.Because Jesus said, "I will be with you always."

:26:24. > :26:26.And today we remember that He said, "If you love me, you will

:26:27. > :26:30.And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another

:26:31. > :26:50.Today, Pentecost, the Christian festival of the Holy Spirit,

:26:51. > :26:53.God's gift of community in the Spirit,

:26:54. > :26:59.He gives a strength that overcomes all fear

:27:00. > :27:11.Today, alongside my mum and dad, and those who died at Hillsborough,

:27:12. > :27:15.I remember another death - the death of Marie Wilson in Enniskillen

:27:16. > :27:27.a death that, in its way, transformed the landscape of the

:27:28. > :27:30.Troubles in Northern Ireland. This young woman died after a bomb

:27:31. > :27:33.blast, holding the hand of her father, Gordon,

:27:34. > :27:35.a devout Methodist Christian. Famously, Gordon Wilson

:27:36. > :27:45.took up the story. He said, "She held my hand tightly,

:27:46. > :27:49.and gripped me as hard as she could. She said, "Daddy,

:27:50. > :27:55.I love you very much." He said those were her exact words

:27:56. > :28:02.to me, and those were the last words And he said, "But I

:28:03. > :28:06.bear no ill will. Talk will not bring her back. And

:28:07. > :28:17.then he celebrated her. She's in heaven and

:28:18. > :28:24.we shall meet again." And he said, "I will pray for these

:28:25. > :28:30.men tonight and every night." And the men who killed her did not

:28:31. > :28:40.walk alone because Gordon prayed This extraordinary strength,

:28:41. > :28:49.this miracle of love, is what the Spirit of Jesus Christ

:28:50. > :28:55.can give to our community. This is the way unfolded by Jesus,

:28:56. > :28:59.who prayed for those who crucified him and who taught us

:29:00. > :29:05.to pray for those who persecute us, and who sends the Holy Spirit

:29:06. > :29:09.as our advocate so that we might be strengthened to do the impossible,

:29:10. > :29:18.and formed and shaped to follow Him. Truth, and justice, and freedom

:29:19. > :29:24.from fear and hatred, and the miracle of forgiveness

:29:25. > :29:27.and love across the barriers He gives them today,

:29:28. > :29:38.if only we will seek them In the face of the worst that

:29:39. > :29:49.circumstance can throw at us, we can be unafraid,

:29:50. > :29:53.because of the promise of Jesus that we remember this day,

:29:54. > :30:02.Pentecost, the feast of the Holy Spirit,

:30:03. > :30:07.the feast of community, ORGAN INSTRUMENTAL:

:30:08. > :32:47."YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE" ALL: We believe in God, the Father,

:32:48. > :32:56.from whom every family We pray for God to fill

:32:57. > :33:33.us with his Spirit. Generous God, we thank you for

:33:34. > :33:39.the power of your Holy Spirit. We ask that we may be strengthened

:33:40. > :33:44.to serve you better. We thank you for the wisdom

:33:45. > :33:56.of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to make us wise

:33:57. > :34:02.to understand your will. We thank you for the peace

:34:03. > :34:12.of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to keep us

:34:13. > :34:15.confident of your love. We thank you for the healing

:34:16. > :34:24.of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to bring

:34:25. > :34:27.reconciliation and wholeness where there is division,

:34:28. > :34:30.sickness and sorrow. We thank you for the gifts

:34:31. > :34:42.of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to equip us for the work

:34:43. > :34:47.which you have given us. We thank you for the fruit

:34:48. > :34:59.of your Holy Spirit. We ask you to reveal

:35:00. > :35:04.in our lives the love of Jesus. We thank you for the breath

:35:05. > :35:14.of your Holy Spirit, We ask you to keep the whole Church,

:35:15. > :35:20.living and departed, Generous God, you sent your

:35:21. > :35:33.Holy Spirit upon your Messiah at the River Jordan,

:35:34. > :35:35.and upon the disciples In your mercy, fill

:35:36. > :35:58.us with your Spirit. He has set his seal upon us and,

:35:59. > :36:06.as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit

:36:07. > :36:08.to dwell in our hearts. The peace of the Lord

:36:09. > :36:12.be always with you. Let us offer one another

:36:13. > :39:00.a sign of peace. Blessed be God,

:39:01. > :39:04.who feeds the hungry, who raises the poor,

:39:05. > :39:07.who fills our praise. Let us give thanks

:39:08. > :39:20.to the Lord our God. ALL: It is right to give

:39:21. > :39:24.thanks and praise. It is indeed right,

:39:25. > :39:27.it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere

:39:28. > :39:30.to give you thanks, Holy Father, almighty

:39:31. > :39:34.and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ,

:39:35. > :39:39.your only Son, our Lord. This day we give you thanks because

:39:40. > :39:44.in fulfilment of your promise you pour out your Spirit upon us,

:39:45. > :39:49.filling us with your gifts, leading us into all truth,

:39:50. > :39:53.and uniting peoples of many tongues Your Spirit gives us

:39:54. > :40:01.grace to call you Father, to proclaim your

:40:02. > :40:05.gospel to all nations and to serve you as

:40:06. > :40:09.a royal priesthood. Therefore we join our voices

:40:10. > :40:18.with angels and archangels, and with all those in

:40:19. > :40:20.whom your Spirit dwells, to proclaim the glory of your name,

:40:21. > :40:32.forever praising you and singing. # Heaven and earth

:40:33. > :41:01.are full of thy glory # Blessed is he that cometh

:41:02. > :42:09.in the name of the Lord # Hosanna, Hosanna,

:42:10. > :42:39.Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son,

:42:40. > :42:46.And as we follow his example and obey his command,

:42:47. > :42:50.grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts

:42:51. > :42:54.of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood, who,

:42:55. > :42:59.in the same night he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks.

:43:00. > :43:02.He broke it and gave it to his disciples,

:43:03. > :43:08.This is my body, which is given for you.

:43:09. > :43:18.In the same way, after supper, he took the cup

:43:19. > :43:24.He gave it to them, saying, "Drink this, all of you.

:43:25. > :43:28.This is my blood of the new covenant,

:43:29. > :43:32.which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

:43:33. > :43:40.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."

:43:41. > :43:44.Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself

:43:45. > :43:52.We proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension.

:43:53. > :43:55.We look for the coming of your kingdom.

:43:56. > :43:58.And, with this bread and this cup, we make the memorial

:43:59. > :44:33.Accept through him, our great high priest,

:44:34. > :44:37.this our sacrifice of thanks and praise.

:44:38. > :44:40.And, as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence

:44:41. > :44:45.of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit,

:44:46. > :44:49.inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son,

:44:50. > :44:57.Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity

:44:58. > :45:01.of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you

:45:02. > :45:06.in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty,

:45:07. > :45:29.# And glory and power be yours for ever and ever

:45:30. > :45:47.When the Holy Spirit was first poured out

:45:48. > :45:49.on the followers of Jesus, the immediate consequence

:45:50. > :45:53.was that the praises of God were spoken, so the Scripture tells

:45:54. > :46:02.In that Spirit, as we now join together in the words Jesus

:46:03. > :46:05.gave to his followers, we are invited to use

:46:06. > :46:13.the language which is most familiar to us.

:46:14. > :46:16.ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

:46:17. > :46:22.Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

:46:23. > :46:28.And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

:46:29. > :46:35.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

:46:36. > :46:39.For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.

:46:40. > :46:51.We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

:46:52. > :46:54.ALL: Though we are many, we are one body

:46:55. > :47:04.Christ, our passover is sacrificed for us.

:47:05. > :47:06.ALL: Therefore, let us keep the feast.

:47:07. > :48:57.# Because he hath annointed me to preach

:48:58. > :49:12.# He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted

:49:13. > :49:32.# To preach deliverance to the captives

:49:33. > :49:46.# And recovering of sight to the blind

:49:47. > :49:55.# To preach the acceptable year of the Lord

:49:56. > :50:17.# To give unto them that mourn a garland for ashes

:50:18. > :50:32.# The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness

:50:33. > :50:46.# That they might be called trees of righteousness

:50:47. > :51:11.# The planting of the Lord that he might be glorified

:51:12. > :51:30.# As the earth, the earth bringeth forth her bud

:51:31. > :51:38.# And as the garden causeth the things

:51:39. > :51:51.# That are sown in it to spring forth

:51:52. > :52:06.# So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise

:52:07. > :52:22.# To spring forth before all the nations as the earth

:52:23. > :54:22.# Because he hath annointed me to preach the Gospel.#

:54:23. > :54:27.Faithful God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter

:54:28. > :54:32.by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation

:54:33. > :54:41.Open our lips by your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory,

:54:42. > :55:05.May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the word was created,

:55:06. > :55:12.May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin

:55:13. > :55:14.when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful

:55:15. > :55:23.May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire on the day of Pentecost,

:55:24. > :55:26.bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ.

:55:27. > :55:35.the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

:55:36. > :55:39.come down upon you and remain with you always.

:55:40. > :55:51.Filled with the Spirit's power, go in the light and peace of Christ.

:55:52. > :57:34.# Ground of being, life and love, height and depth beyond description

:57:35. > :57:37.# We, your people, make our prayer help us love

:57:38. > :57:46.# As sisters, brothers all whose burdens we can share

:57:47. > :57:56.# Where your name binds us together, you, Lord Christ, will surely be

:57:57. > :58:22.# Where no selfishness can sever there your love the world may see

:58:23. > :58:55.# Wind and flame of Pentecost fire our hearts afresh with yearning

:58:56. > :59:06.# May your love unite our action never more to speak alone
