0:02:49 > 0:02:50- Are you ready?- I'm ready. Are you?

0:02:50 > 0:02:53OK, let's get on with this year's One Man And His Dog.

0:02:53 > 0:02:54- Here we go.- Let's do it.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01As we prepare for the off, our young handlers will be first up,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03and this is the course they'll be facing.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07The handler starts by sending their dog either out to the

0:03:07 > 0:03:12left-hand side, which is "Come-bye," or away to the right to pick up

0:03:12 > 0:03:16five sheep waiting 200 yards away at the end of the field.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20This first stage is called the "outrun,"

0:03:20 > 0:03:22and 20 points are on offer.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23Then it's onto the lift,

0:03:23 > 0:03:27where the dog must start the sheep on their way in a controlled manner

0:03:27 > 0:03:29to stand a chance of collecting a maximum ten points.

0:03:31 > 0:03:32Once they're on the run,

0:03:32 > 0:03:34all the sheep have to be guided through the fetch gates in

0:03:34 > 0:03:38the middle of the field, and around the handler back at the post.

0:03:38 > 0:03:4120 more points can be picked up for the perfect fetch.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Next up, it's the highest scoring element of all - the drive,

0:03:46 > 0:03:49where the pack must be guided through two drive gates set

0:03:49 > 0:03:51on either side of the field.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55This can often make or break a run, with a massive 30 points on offer.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Then it's time to enter the shedding ring

0:03:59 > 0:04:01for the penultimate challenge.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05Our youngsters must keep all five sheep in the circle and split off

0:04:05 > 0:04:09any two from the flock, hoping for a perfect ten points.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Finally, it's onto the home straight, as they head for the pen.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16Another ten points can be picked up here,

0:04:16 > 0:04:20as all five sheep are guided in and the gates closed.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23The whole course must be completed in a maximum of 15 minutes.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Our head of sheep, Malcolm Sowerby,

0:04:29 > 0:04:34signals the flock are in position, and first up it's Caolan Byrne

0:04:34 > 0:04:38with his dog, Dan, representing current title holders Ireland.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41One Man And His Dog has been won by the Irish team, I believe,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44- three times in a row, hasn't it? - Yeah.- So there's a bit of pressure?

0:04:44 > 0:04:47There is, yeah, yeah. Hopefully there'll be a fourth.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55So here we go, then, Caolan Byrne, 16 years old,

0:04:55 > 0:04:56with his dog Dan.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58CAOLAN WHISTLES

0:04:58 > 0:05:01He's got to go round the offside of that line of oak trees but

0:05:01 > 0:05:04also stay in contact with the sheep at the top of the field.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Yeah, well, he's in the right place now. The dog's gone well.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10CAOLAN WHISTLES

0:05:10 > 0:05:12They're coming quite sweetly.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Very, very good line, and it's a very tricky part of the course,

0:05:15 > 0:05:17to kind of keep the brakes on them coming down this hill

0:05:17 > 0:05:19and hit these gates at the bottom.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22They got 19 for the outrun, out of 20.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25One point lost on the lift.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28He's a good chance of catching this. The dog's in the right place.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Got 'em.

0:05:30 > 0:05:31Stay there, lad!

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Very, very impressive first part to this trial.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Yes, one or two will have gone there, but no problem.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Stay there, you!

0:05:39 > 0:05:43Just enforcing the command there. Oh, hello!

0:05:43 > 0:05:46- A bit lively. - Ooh, dear, dear, dear, dear.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49CAOLAN WHISTLES

0:05:49 > 0:05:53- Held it. Well done, Dan.- Yeah, no, he's turned. Back she comes.

0:05:53 > 0:05:54Stay there!

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Good man.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00A vastly experienced dog at ten years old.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04Things have settled down, that won't have cost him too many.

0:06:04 > 0:06:0616 out of 20 scored for the fetch.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09CAOLAN WHISTLES

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Ah, he's going well, he's going well.

0:06:15 > 0:06:16Stay there, Dan!

0:06:17 > 0:06:21- That's a nice, gentle pace now, that's exactly what you want.- Yeah.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25- Oh, going a bit far right now.- Dan!

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Oh, just look at that.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Just in time, now the big left to get the turn.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32- Come-bye, come-bye!- Go, go, go.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Brakes on again now. Whoa, whoa-whoa-whoa.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40And this is a very tricky part, this is the cross-drive.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42The idea is to try and get the sheep going in

0:06:42 > 0:06:45a nice straight line right in front of the house.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49- He's got him. - Come-bye, come-bye, come-bye.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52No, no, no, too quick.

0:06:52 > 0:06:53Go on, swing round, swing round...

0:06:53 > 0:06:58Yeah, that flighty ewe just took the lead there, drew 'em all across.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02Judges have awarded 14 out of 30 for the drive.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06It's not too much of a bad tactic just to calm the sheep down

0:07:06 > 0:07:11- before they enter into the shedding ring.- Yeah, we're settled again now.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14- Stay there! - Dan a very, very calm dog.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18And the sheep look calm,

0:07:18 > 0:07:20they don't look like they think they're a target.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25- Sit there.- He's just waiting for the right opportunity to call Dan in.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Sit there. Stay there, stay there, stay there!

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Will you stay there?!

0:07:30 > 0:07:34- Dan, listen up! Come-bye. - You can see he wants to make sure...

0:07:34 > 0:07:36- Go, go, go, go.- Now.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39- Here, come in here, come-bye, come-bye.- Ah, no.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- No, no, no.- Dan! Wait, wait, wait. - That didn't happen.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46The sheep are out of the ring as well, so there's a missed chance,

0:07:46 > 0:07:49and out of the ring, that will be expensive.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53- However...- There was a little misunderstanding, I think,

0:07:53 > 0:07:54between handler and dog there.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58The dog just felt like he wanted to do his job and regroup the sheep.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02Stay there! Dan, stay there, stay there!

0:08:02 > 0:08:05- Good, now, here's a chance again. - Stay there, come-bye.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07Stay there, come in here, Dan, Dan, Dan.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09- Got him.- Very good.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12- Yeah, he's got him. - Relief for Caolan.- Yes.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Two scored for the shed.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- Now, he's a good line into the pen here.- Wait.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22If he can get 'em to the heel of the gate, he'll stand a good chance.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26- Stay there. Sit! - There's one looking in.- Sit there.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Two looking in now.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32- Stay there.- Just wait for it, be patient.- Round you come.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Stay there, wait, stay there!

0:08:35 > 0:08:37- He's got 'em.- They're in!

0:08:38 > 0:08:39- That's it.- Good man.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45Eight scored for the pen, then, and Caolan Byrne with his dog Dan

0:08:45 > 0:08:48completes the Young Handlers course in 13.5 minutes.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53So Ireland in defence of their title set the pace,

0:08:53 > 0:08:57and after a shaky middle, Caolan and Dan pull out a strong pen,

0:08:57 > 0:09:00making 68 the score to beat.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05I see you've got a big smile on your face. How do you feel that went?

0:09:05 > 0:09:09- Er, except for the last gate it went all right.- The last gate.- Yeah.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11- I suppose you'll be wanting to know how you did.- Yeah.

0:09:11 > 0:09:16- OK, well, erm, you did it in time. - Yeah.- In the nick of time, Caolan.

0:09:16 > 0:09:17Your score...

0:09:17 > 0:09:21- 68 out of 100.- Yeah.- Yeah?

0:09:21 > 0:09:22But what I do have to say to you,

0:09:22 > 0:09:26because it's just being transmitted to me live now,

0:09:26 > 0:09:28you're in first place. Well done to you.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Cos I was the only one that went!

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Well done, Team Ireland, Caolan and Dan, good luck.

0:09:32 > 0:09:33Thanks, thank you.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Ireland's hoping for win number four, but as she heads to the post,

0:09:38 > 0:09:43Wales' Esyllt Smith has that top spot in her sights.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47- Are you competitive? Does it matter if you lose?- Oh, I hate losing.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49But when it comes to trialling,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52I know that I have to let the best person win on the day.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Well, that day's arrived.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00Can Esyllt and Jaff set Wales off on a winning streak?

0:10:00 > 0:10:03- Come-bye. - Now, she's gone off on the left.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05And not too deep into the field.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Want him to go, yeah, there's the command to keep him out.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10ESYLLT WHISTLES

0:10:12 > 0:10:17- And she's landed him well. Now, just a bit sharp there coming away.- Run!

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- 15 out of 20 for the outrun.- Yeah.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Two lost on the lift, eight scored.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Go on!

0:10:24 > 0:10:25Wait!

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Come on, down!

0:10:27 > 0:10:31Positive handling here. Forceful command, dog's taken it.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37This looks very, very good, Jaff has got command of these sheep.

0:10:38 > 0:10:39Looking good.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41ESYLLT SPEAKS WELSH

0:10:41 > 0:10:45Ah, there's a bit of Welsh command going in there, eh?

0:10:45 > 0:10:47Don't ask me what she said, though.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49She's doing a good job.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- And nice and steady here on this turn.- All good and...- Oh, oh, oh!

0:10:52 > 0:10:55Oh, she's all right. She's all right.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59There'll be a point gone there, maybe, but, er, she's got her turn.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Now, then, away we go.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Just a bit of left and right

0:11:04 > 0:11:07and that's just stirring them up a little bit.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11- 17 out of 20 for the fetch. - That's better, that's better.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14That's it, yeah, nice balance now.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16ESYLLT WHISTLES

0:11:16 > 0:11:22- Just a touch right, whoa. - Wait there! Wait!

0:11:22 > 0:11:24No, whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:11:26 > 0:11:29She's got 'em.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31And again they're going at some lick now, these sheep.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Yeah, but he's cut the corner again, that's a young dog for you.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36That's better.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- Now she stands a chance. - Ooh, go on, go on, go on, go on!

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Yeah, just put the lie down in a bit quick.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Oh, one's going to go through. No. Oh!

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Oh, we've done a figure of eight now.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51That will be costly.

0:11:53 > 0:11:5712 for the drive, that's 12 out of 30.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59On 52 at the moment.

0:11:59 > 0:12:04- We're back in control. We're back on the line.- Lie down!

0:12:04 > 0:12:07She was obviously quite apprehensive going into this trial, but suddenly

0:12:07 > 0:12:10gets to the post and then she's certainly not afraid to shout now.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13No, no, no, she's done a good job keeping the lid on this one.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19He's in the right place, out of the way for the time being,

0:12:19 > 0:12:20let the sheep settle.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27- Lie down! - Oh, this looks good.- Lie down!

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Oh, yeah, fair play.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31Wait!

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- First time of asking, in he came. - Very efficient.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Ten out of ten for the shed.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Now, she just...

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- needs to organise this here now.- Lie down.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46- Run!- Yeah, she's got where she doesn't want to be,

0:12:46 > 0:12:48and round the pen they've gone.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52Now, they now know where to escape. However...

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Now she's in a good-ish spot.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58Settled the job down.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00Lie down!

0:13:00 > 0:13:03- The pack are problematic. - Well, he's...

0:13:03 > 0:13:07- Come!- He's got tight there again, and that's just rattled them.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11Nice and steady now.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13She did say to me beforehand,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16she was feeling the pressure after Caolan's 68 score.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Yeah, this is going to be close, this is going to be close.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Excellent, well done.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27That's a score of four.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31So, very, very close indeed, this, in the Young Handlers round.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36A tale of mixed fortunes for Esyllt and Jaff,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39with a costly drive and a problematic pen.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43But that superb shed keeps Wales in contention with 66 points.

0:13:46 > 0:13:47- And breathe.- Yeah. - You were so nervous.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50- I was. - I have to say, I think you've got...

0:13:50 > 0:13:52You had strong command tactics, you've got a powerful...

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Some set of lungs on you, haven't you?

0:13:54 > 0:13:56That's why my voice is a bit croaky again.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59What you did get, which was outstanding to watch,

0:13:59 > 0:14:01is ten out of ten for your shed.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03- Ooh!- Yeah?

0:14:03 > 0:14:06- Good girl, so well done to you. - Thank you.- You can go and relax now.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Thanks.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12So, halfway through our Young Handlers, Ireland lead the field,

0:14:12 > 0:14:13but by a narrow margin.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17Scotland and England are still to run, though, and as Anita's been

0:14:17 > 0:14:21discovering, this is a truly grand location in which to go for glory.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30Nestled among Northern Ireland's lake district,

0:14:30 > 0:14:34and watched over by the bold Benaughlin Mountain, you couldn't

0:14:34 > 0:14:38ask for a more theatrical setting in which to stage our contest.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Florence Court was home to the Earls of Enniskillen,

0:14:40 > 0:14:45built in 1719 in opulent Georgian style.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50But if you really want to get a feel for what this fantastic house

0:14:50 > 0:14:54is all about, you need to fast forward 200 years

0:14:54 > 0:14:57to when it was in its heyday - the Roaring Twenties.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07'And if it's the juiciest gossip you're after,

0:15:07 > 0:15:10'of course you've got to talk to the housekeeper.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15'Mhairi Walton has been looking after Florence Court for ten years.'

0:15:17 > 0:15:21Nice to meet you, Mhairi. Lovely to see you. What a place.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25And why is it frozen in time in the 1920s? Why that era?

0:15:25 > 0:15:29That time was such a fascinating time. It was a time of change.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33It was the time for the 5th Earl, totally different from his father.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35At the time when the 5th Earl was here,

0:15:35 > 0:15:37he was here with four children -

0:15:37 > 0:15:39three daughters and the one young son -

0:15:39 > 0:15:41and it'd have been full of laughter,

0:15:41 > 0:15:43it'd have been full of echoes of laughter.

0:15:43 > 0:15:44The children would have been out,

0:15:44 > 0:15:48they would have been dressing up, they had a whole estate to play on.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53The 5th Earl turned Florence Court from a stuffy stately into

0:15:53 > 0:15:55a fun-filled family home.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02What a great room, fantastic!

0:16:02 > 0:16:06- There he is.- Yep, and there we have the man himself, the 5th Earl.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09You can see with his attire, the way he's actually standing,

0:16:09 > 0:16:13his colours, everything, even his wee cheeks, they're all blowing red.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16You know, you can see he's been out on the land.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19He's the man that you'd have seen on the back of a hayrig,

0:16:19 > 0:16:20checking all the estate.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23He'd have been getting his hands dirty.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25It sums him up, doesn't it?

0:16:25 > 0:16:27And you're right, he's got those rugged...

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- Yeah.- ..windswept cheeks. - The wee cheeky-cheekies, yeah.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34It must be quite something to take care of a house like this, Mhairi.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38Yeah. It's a lot of work, you know,

0:16:38 > 0:16:40but she is an old lady.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42There's a lot of dedication that goes in here.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Items that you see within these homes,

0:16:45 > 0:16:48they've belonged to somebody at some point, and you have to look

0:16:48 > 0:16:51after them, you have to be able to treasure these things.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55I love that you describe this house as a "she".

0:16:55 > 0:17:00Yeah, she is. She is a beautiful old lady.

0:17:01 > 0:17:02I love it.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05I think it's brilliant, that's why I still work in these houses.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07- I'm moving in!- Great!

0:17:07 > 0:17:08More than welcome!

0:17:15 > 0:17:16CAOLAN WHISTLES

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Well, out here, we have well and truly taken up residence.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23Half of our young handlers have already run, and next up to the post

0:17:23 > 0:17:28is Scotland's Jock Welsh, who has ancestry of his own to live up to.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31Now, your family has been working sheepdogs for a long time.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34Does that put pressure on you or do you feel some help from it?

0:17:34 > 0:17:38Yeah, there is a bit of pressure, but it makes you a wee bit better,

0:17:38 > 0:17:39- I think.- It makes you try harder!

0:17:39 > 0:17:42- Yeah.- You've got a hard act to follow!- Aye.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47So, as the heavens open,

0:17:47 > 0:17:51Jock Welsh and his dog Nell will be praying for a perfect run.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54JOCK WHISTLES

0:17:57 > 0:18:02Just a reminder, Caolan Byrne and his dog Dan scored 68,

0:18:02 > 0:18:05and then Es Smith with Jaff scored 66.

0:18:05 > 0:18:10Just a tad economic, that outrun. But the sheep have stood and waited.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12Good stop.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16- Hit that 12 o'clock position beautifully there.- Yeah.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19Yeah, come away reasonably well too.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23- Two points lost, then, on the outrun. 18 scored.- Mm-hm.

0:18:23 > 0:18:24Eight scored on the lift.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28- This is a good line, this.- Yeah.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Nice through the gates.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35All three young handlers have done very, very well

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- with this first section of the course.- They have. Yeah.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Nice pace.

0:18:43 > 0:18:47Jock's grandfather shares the same name, very famous Scottish handler.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Nice turn too.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56He'll be pleased to this point.

0:18:56 > 0:18:5818 for the fetch.

0:18:58 > 0:18:59JOCK WHISTLES

0:19:12 > 0:19:16Oh, and a nice, wide flank there by Nell.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20So far, it's this cross-drive that has been the sticking point.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22Yeah, he's come too low again now,

0:19:22 > 0:19:25he wants to climb the hill to be sure.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29- That's better.- Will Jock and Nell be successful?- He will if he goes now.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Go, go, go, go, go.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37And just as the rain gets worse, he negotiates the gate, and well.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44Excellent, excellent. 24 scored out of 30 for the drive.

0:19:44 > 0:19:45Yeah, it was a good drive.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Looking very confident, very relaxed as well.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52- He'll be well ahead now with that drive.- Yeah.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55Nice line back into the ring.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58Jock ready and waiting in the middle.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Es and Jaff have really set the standard in the shedding ring,

0:20:03 > 0:20:06a score of ten out of ten in the last round.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12You can see Jock looking for the opportunity, looking to make it.

0:20:12 > 0:20:13Here it comes.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16Oh, she's on the wrong sheep.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19She's on the wrong sheep, I'm afraid.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21He's made a very good job, but unfortunately

0:20:21 > 0:20:24he should be dogging the two sheep, not the three.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27- So the judges have not accepted that.- No, no, no.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32So far, a score of 68 on the total.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35- So, already matching Caolan's.- Yeah.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40His second shed now will be for not a lot.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44That'll do, that'll do, that'll do!

0:20:44 > 0:20:46JOCK WHISTLES

0:20:50 > 0:20:54So, this time, no mistake where Nell's focus is.

0:20:54 > 0:21:01Just one point for the shed takes them to 69, so they are ahead.

0:21:01 > 0:21:02Still plenty of time.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Now, he's set this pen up very well.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10Regained his composure.

0:21:12 > 0:21:13Nell back on her job.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29Now he's a chance, a good chance.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- Well commanded, that. - Yeah, job done.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39So, Jock swings the gate shut, then, with a score of seven for that pen.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42We've just had word, Andy, from the judges,

0:21:42 > 0:21:45that they've reduced the points for the cross-drive down to 20,

0:21:45 > 0:21:47- as opposed to 24.- Yeah.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51That will be a lot less than what Jock will be expecting, Andy.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Yes, it will. He left the peg

0:21:53 > 0:21:56once the sheep had come through the second drive gate.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59The traditional way is you don't leave the peg

0:21:59 > 0:22:02until the first sheep is in the ring.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06A real roller coaster of a round for our Scottish young handler.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08But even with that deduction on the drive, overall,

0:22:08 > 0:22:11Jock and Nell end on a high

0:22:11 > 0:22:12of 72 points.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17Jock, what are you thinking?

0:22:17 > 0:22:20Well, I thought I had a good run round the course.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23And then...I just made a mess of it myself at the shed.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Well, really, Jock,

0:22:25 > 0:22:28overall it didn't matter because you scored 72,

0:22:28 > 0:22:31- which puts you top of the leaderboard.- Thank you.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34- How do you feel?- Good. - Well done, well deserved, good job.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39With just one more young handler left to run,

0:22:39 > 0:22:41this is how things stand.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43It's Scotland who've gained some clear ground,

0:22:43 > 0:22:46notching up a supreme 72.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48Wales trail the field on 66,

0:22:48 > 0:22:51but Ireland are only a couple of points ahead of them.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57Only English young handler Tom Blease

0:22:57 > 0:22:59and his dog Queen can top that.

0:22:59 > 0:23:00Tom grew up in a town,

0:23:00 > 0:23:03but two years ago fell in love with trialling.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06His family moved to a 22-acre smallholding

0:23:06 > 0:23:08so he could follow his passion.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11And today, that dedication could pay off.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18He seems like quite a special young man to me.

0:23:18 > 0:23:22Yeah, he's all right, just in a real, nice, quiet way, yeah, he is.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24Absolutely. You know, farming's in his blood,

0:23:24 > 0:23:26so he starts his apprenticeship on Monday.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29So, yeah, that's his future.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34- All to play for.- Come-bye.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38Here we are, then, Queen off to the left-hand side.

0:23:38 > 0:23:43Running wide. Now she's going to go left around the big sycamore tree.

0:23:43 > 0:23:44She's stopped.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49She's locked on now, she's seen them.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53There will be a chunk of the outrun gone, but she's landed and deep.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57You can just see Meg, Malcolm's dog there,

0:23:57 > 0:24:00just helping to hold the sheep in position.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03And he's away nicely. Nice, steady lift there.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Here we go.

0:24:07 > 0:24:0812 scored.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12One point lost on the lift.

0:24:12 > 0:24:13It was a good lift.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Nice line down now. That one ewe is still looking to go back.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Got it.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26All four young handlers through the first set of gates.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30Going well.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32Nice, steady pace.

0:24:42 > 0:24:43It's a good, good pace.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46It's a good turn and he's off on a good line

0:24:46 > 0:24:48up this first leg of the drive too, now.

0:24:48 > 0:24:5016 out of 20 for the fetch.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52It was a good fetch.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Seem to have a really good understanding, don't they?

0:24:54 > 0:24:57- They certainly do.- A great partnership, these two.- Oh, yes.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00Looking calm as well. And obviously incredibly focused at this stage.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02Very, very intense, this.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04Just a touch right now.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07- And again.- Oh!- No, no, he's all right. He's all right.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Well done, he's managing that well. Another one.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16She's gone round the back.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21Stop it, stop it, stop it. He'll get the turn.

0:25:24 > 0:25:25There we go. Now then.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29The balance, the distance between the sheep and the dog,

0:25:29 > 0:25:31really key on this cross-drive.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35He's held a good line there, she's helping him a bit.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38Stop.

0:25:43 > 0:25:44He's caught it.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Good line back now.

0:25:48 > 0:25:5120 scored for the drive.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53So, matched Jock and Nell.

0:25:53 > 0:25:54He'll be pleased.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Good pace as well, good tempo

0:25:56 > 0:25:59- to this trial. - Yeah, sheep are settled now.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02Lie down. Now come-bye. Get! Lie down.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Lie down, lie down.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07Come-bye, lie down.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11- Keep them in the ring. - Lie down. Lie down!

0:26:12 > 0:26:15Hanging on Tom's every word, is Queen.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17Yeah, just waiting for that command.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19Lie down, come-bye. Lie down.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21Lie down, come-bye. Lie down, lie down.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24- No, they...- Lie down. Wait, wait.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28The opportunity wasn't really there, but he did ask for it,

0:26:28 > 0:26:30and of course all five have left the ring now.

0:26:30 > 0:26:34So there will be a chunk gone from his shed, I'm afraid.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Lie down.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41Time to regroup and start again.

0:26:41 > 0:26:42Lie down. Lie down.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Well, he's shedding for not a great deal,

0:26:47 > 0:26:49other than the opportunity to go to the pen.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56- A minute and a half to go.- Yes, it's a tough call now, I'm afraid.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00It's that one sheep, she's on her own and nobody wants to be with her.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02Lie down.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05Get in there, Tom, get in. Good boy.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07Lie down, go on.

0:27:07 > 0:27:08Lie down, go on.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11Lie down, lie down, lie down.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Good enough when it came.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16Well, now he's going to have to run.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20He's got 50 seconds to try and get these sheep into this pen.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22One point for the shed,

0:27:22 > 0:27:24but that one point could be crucial

0:27:24 > 0:27:26later on in this competition.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28Don't mess about, Tom, you've got 30 seconds left.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Come-bye.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33- The dog's fast enough, that's for sure.- Lie down, lie down!

0:27:33 > 0:27:36- Now then, he has a chance, but it's a small one.- Lie down.

0:27:36 > 0:27:38- Now, come-bye.- Go.

0:27:39 > 0:27:43- Go, go, go.- Be kind, come on, you've got ten seconds.- Lie down.

0:27:45 > 0:27:46Lie down.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51- Lie down, lie down. Come-bye. Lie down.- Time up!

0:27:51 > 0:27:55Oh, I thought it was going to happen there, I really did.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58- But that is time up, I'm afraid.- Yeah.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Running out of time at the pen means

0:28:01 > 0:28:03Tom and Queen score nothing for this challenge.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06Our English newcomer ends on 58.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11Tom, how do you think that went?

0:28:11 > 0:28:14All right, I was pleased with how she ran, she tried hard for me,

0:28:14 > 0:28:16but the sheep were just a bit sticky in the shedding ring

0:28:16 > 0:28:18and she wouldn't keep up, but overall, pleased.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21You've only just been trialling for a very short period.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24It is something that you've just taken to, isn't it?

0:28:24 > 0:28:27Yeah, I really enjoy it and it's great fun.

0:28:27 > 0:28:29- Happy?- Yeah, all right.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31You should be, you should be.

0:28:31 > 0:28:35- It was really impressive to watch, well done. Well done, Queen.- Cheers.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39At the end of the first half of our competition,

0:28:39 > 0:28:41all our young handlers have run.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44And whilst England stay just in touch on 58,

0:28:44 > 0:28:48at the other end of the table, Scotland are sitting pretty on 72.

0:28:50 > 0:28:54But it will be these scores combined with their senior team-mates'

0:28:54 > 0:28:58which determine who lifts this 40th anniversary trophy.

0:28:58 > 0:29:00And they'll be following in the footsteps

0:29:00 > 0:29:04of some quite remarkable shepherds, perhaps none more so

0:29:04 > 0:29:07than a man who was an inspiration behind this trial

0:29:07 > 0:29:11and who lived sheepdog trialling until his last breath.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15That man was Bob Fraser.

0:29:22 > 0:29:24At the northern edge of Northumberland,

0:29:24 > 0:29:28a stone's throw from the Scottish border, lies the Mindrum estate.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31It was here that Bob lived and worked.

0:29:33 > 0:29:35From a long line of shepherds,

0:29:35 > 0:29:39Bob had a natural gift for working with dogs and sheep,

0:29:39 > 0:29:40as his daughter Joyce remembers.

0:29:40 > 0:29:42It was all he ever wanted to do.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45He used to run away from home and go to the sheep

0:29:45 > 0:29:47before he went to school.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49He had a way about him,

0:29:49 > 0:29:53he just had this instinct, I think,

0:29:53 > 0:29:56for reading the sheep as well as his dog.

0:29:57 > 0:30:01It was this instinct, born out of his shepherding roots,

0:30:01 > 0:30:05that gave him the edge when he began to trial competitively.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08He won the International three times

0:30:08 > 0:30:14and he's won the English National six times with six different dogs.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18But it was an encounter with BBC producer Philip Gilbert

0:30:18 > 0:30:20that would secure his legacy

0:30:20 > 0:30:23as an inspiration behind One Man And His Dog.

0:30:23 > 0:30:27Gilbert was keen to bring the competition to the small screen.

0:30:27 > 0:30:30So he went and had a word with my father.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32And he said, yes, it was a great idea

0:30:32 > 0:30:35to think about dog trialling for the television.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37He was very pleased for it, absolutely,

0:30:37 > 0:30:42because it showcases the intelligence of the Border collie

0:30:42 > 0:30:47and the time and patience in training these dogs.

0:30:48 > 0:30:50One Man And His Dog was born.

0:30:50 > 0:30:53Bob took part in the first-ever series,

0:30:53 > 0:30:55finishing second by one point.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58You've got to have a cool dog

0:30:58 > 0:31:00and you've also got to keep cool yourself.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02That's one of the main things, I think.

0:31:02 > 0:31:07And it all builds up to sort of man and dog cooperating together.

0:31:09 > 0:31:13My father wasn't a boastful man at all.

0:31:13 > 0:31:17And it was just like another trial to him, I think,

0:31:17 > 0:31:20he just took everything as it came.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24While the TV show went from strength to strength,

0:31:24 > 0:31:28Bob remained a humble shepherd and dedicated sheepdog handler

0:31:28 > 0:31:30until his death in 1986.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35He died on the trialling field with his dog beside him

0:31:35 > 0:31:38and was awarded a posthumous third place.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40What a better way to go.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43My mother just said, "Well, he died as he lived."

0:31:43 > 0:31:47Bob's legendary status in the trialling world lives on,

0:31:47 > 0:31:50as does the programme he helped to create,

0:31:50 > 0:31:53sharing his passion with millions.

0:31:53 > 0:31:55Didn't really take it in until he died.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58You know, he's just my dad, after all.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00And 30 years after his death,

0:32:00 > 0:32:04I can't believe this is still being recognised today,

0:32:04 > 0:32:05which is lovely.

0:32:05 > 0:32:1040 years later, his spirit lives on in the programme,

0:32:10 > 0:32:13showcasing the skilful harmony of shepherd and dog

0:32:13 > 0:32:15that Bob understood so well.

0:32:15 > 0:32:19Oh, yes, yes. Completely in control.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21Ten points scored out of ten.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28Well, it goes without saying, Andy, we're very grateful

0:32:28 > 0:32:30to have a character like Bob,

0:32:30 > 0:32:33- because without him, we wouldn't be sat here.- Correct, yes.

0:32:33 > 0:32:37And he was inspirational to the programme 40 years ago now.

0:32:37 > 0:32:39- Yeah, yeah.- Hmm.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41Well, I'm sure he's looking down and watching this.

0:32:41 > 0:32:43I'm sure he is, and you know what?

0:32:43 > 0:32:47- He'll have the best view of that cross-drive line.- He will.

0:32:52 > 0:32:5640 years on, the passion this competition brings with it lives on.

0:32:56 > 0:32:57Stay there!

0:32:58 > 0:33:01Halfway through, our young handlers have all run.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03And Scotland have come out top dog.

0:33:03 > 0:33:05- Well commanded, that. - Yeah, job done.

0:33:07 > 0:33:11But it's these scores, combined with those of their senior team-mates',

0:33:11 > 0:33:14that will determine today's overall winner.

0:33:14 > 0:33:16And the seasoned shepherds have

0:33:16 > 0:33:18a much more difficult challenge on their hands.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24They'll have two extra sheep to contend with.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27And the lift post has been moved back another hundred yards,

0:33:27 > 0:33:30or the length of a football pitch.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35The second set of drive gates have also been rotated 90 degrees,

0:33:35 > 0:33:36making the gap between the gates

0:33:36 > 0:33:39more difficult for the handler to judge.

0:33:39 > 0:33:40As if that all wasn't enough,

0:33:40 > 0:33:43two of their seven sheep will be wearing red collars,

0:33:43 > 0:33:46and once in the shedding ring, they'll have to split

0:33:46 > 0:33:49just a single collared sheep from the rest of the flock.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53Like the young handlers,

0:33:53 > 0:33:56they'll have just 15 minutes to complete the course.

0:34:05 > 0:34:06And as the weather closes in,

0:34:06 > 0:34:10it's not just the course promising to make life more difficult.

0:34:10 > 0:34:12If you work on Countryfile,

0:34:12 > 0:34:16you always have to have a variety of outerwear in your bag.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18The weather is not messing around today.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22- Here comes Malcolm, our head of sheep.- Completely drenched.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24- You're looking grand, Malcolm. - Dapper as ever.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30As England are currently last, they'll be first to the post.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33And if ever there was a man who knew about overcoming the odds,

0:34:33 > 0:34:35it's Dick Roper.

0:34:35 > 0:34:39This time last year, I started losing the sight of my right eye.

0:34:39 > 0:34:43And over the summer it's died, so I've just got my left eye now.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47And that makes trialling difficult

0:34:47 > 0:34:50because I don't judge my distances so well.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53So, with ground to make up

0:34:53 > 0:34:55and limited vision on this tricky course,

0:34:55 > 0:34:59Dick and his dog Will could be tested to their limit.

0:35:02 > 0:35:03Stand.

0:35:04 > 0:35:06So, Dick and Will with it all to do.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08And he goes off to the left-hand side.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12Dick in traditional pose, sleeves rolled up.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19You see already two sheep wearing collars there,

0:35:19 > 0:35:21they'll come into play later on in the shedding ring

0:35:21 > 0:35:24where there has to be a single taken off.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26Oh, one's caught up in the collar already...

0:35:26 > 0:35:28Oh, it's free again.

0:35:28 > 0:35:29No problem.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32Just one point lost on the outrun.

0:35:32 > 0:35:33One point lost on the lift.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37This is a very good line.

0:35:38 > 0:35:40Stop.

0:35:42 > 0:35:43Nicely through the fetch.

0:35:45 > 0:35:49Nice pace now, and seven sheep for the senior handlers here.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52A formidable competitor, Dick.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56And a nice turn.

0:35:56 > 0:35:57Stand, stand.

0:35:57 > 0:35:59Stand. Stand.

0:35:59 > 0:36:02And it looks as if we've got a bit of sunshine here as well.

0:36:02 > 0:36:07- Things brightening up for England. - Well, Dick is known as Lucky Dick.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11And there's a long story behind that.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14Just three lost on the fetch.

0:36:14 > 0:36:16He's only down five, and he is going well.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20Those problems that he has with his sight these days,

0:36:20 > 0:36:23it could be very tricky as far as perspective is concerned

0:36:23 > 0:36:25on this cross-drive that's coming up.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28But things looking good towards the first set of gates on this drive.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30Looking very good.

0:36:30 > 0:36:31Very calmly done.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34- Stand!- Yeah, good, nice.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41Stand. Steady, man.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44- Stand.- This is good work here. Good work.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46He's lined that gate up well.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53- Textbook.- And he's gone for the turn.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56And got it.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00- Good.- 25 scored for the drive,

0:37:00 > 0:37:03just five points dropped.

0:37:05 > 0:37:09You can see what Dick's plan is here, he's going for it,

0:37:09 > 0:37:11put the pressure on the boys to follow.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15Nice and steady, then, towards the shedding ring.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18The plan here - to take one of these ewes away from the flock

0:37:18 > 0:37:20that's wearing a collar.

0:37:23 > 0:37:27Just look at how calm the scenario is here.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30And that's the key with good trialling.

0:37:30 > 0:37:32They're not rattled at all.

0:37:32 > 0:37:33Out, keep out.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35Lie down, now lie down.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38And you'll see him walk around the flock,

0:37:38 > 0:37:41just to work out the best position...

0:37:41 > 0:37:45to sort of intercept and almost interject.

0:37:45 > 0:37:46Come-bye, out, out.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48Come-bye, out, keep out.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51He's just going to creep up here. He's going to take it.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53Wallop.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55- Good job.- Stand, stand.- Good job.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57Stand, stand, stand.

0:37:57 > 0:37:58Stand.

0:38:00 > 0:38:01Stand.

0:38:01 > 0:38:03Eight scored for the single.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05Get out.

0:38:07 > 0:38:08Steady.

0:38:13 > 0:38:18Now, the final job. Can he pen these sheep?

0:38:19 > 0:38:23He's lined them up well, they're coming to the heel of the gate.

0:38:23 > 0:38:25All looking good. Just letting them look.

0:38:27 > 0:38:29Stand. Keep out, stand.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31Out. Stand.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34Will keeping his side. I don't think they're going to go past him.

0:38:34 > 0:38:38One in, two in. Three, four, five.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41- All in. Yeah, good pen.- That'll do.

0:38:41 > 0:38:44It's a score of nine at the pen.

0:38:44 > 0:38:46And a pat on the back there

0:38:46 > 0:38:49for Will. Good job done, my son.

0:38:51 > 0:38:54So, Dick Roper and dog Will prove consistent throughout,

0:38:54 > 0:38:56and that reliable run brings home

0:38:56 > 0:38:58the highest score of the day so far.

0:39:00 > 0:39:03Dick, masterfully done, sir. Masterfully done. Were you happy?

0:39:03 > 0:39:07Yeah, very happy, very happy. Tricky trying to get that single off.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09Yes. That was where your team-mate Tom came a bit unstuck as well.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12What you're trying to do is do something very unnatural

0:39:12 > 0:39:14which is take a sheep away from its mates.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17And sheep are flock animals and they want to stay together,

0:39:17 > 0:39:19so by taking one away, that's the last thing they want to do.

0:39:19 > 0:39:21Well, it's all done now. Well done.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23Thank you very much indeed, that's great.

0:39:23 > 0:39:28So, our first team total of the day is posted by England, with 145.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31That's the target for Wales's Aled Owen

0:39:31 > 0:39:33and five-year-old Cap to aim at.

0:39:33 > 0:39:36This superstar of the shepherding world has won

0:39:36 > 0:39:38just about every major title.

0:39:38 > 0:39:41Can he add the 40th anniversary One Man And His Dog trophy

0:39:41 > 0:39:43to his cabinet?

0:39:43 > 0:39:44Come-bye.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46Away. He's away.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49So, off goes five-year-old Cap.

0:39:49 > 0:39:50Good line out.

0:39:54 > 0:39:56He's put Cap where he wanted him.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58The sheep have just moved off the top end.

0:39:59 > 0:40:01Cap's covered them.

0:40:02 > 0:40:05On to the point of balance and away we go.

0:40:05 > 0:40:0718 scored for the outrun.

0:40:10 > 0:40:12- Eight for the lift.- Yeah.

0:40:14 > 0:40:17- Heading on a very, very good line. - Yeah.

0:40:17 > 0:40:21- And getting very close to these gates now.- Yeah, looking good.

0:40:21 > 0:40:23Looking good.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26Perhaps he knows exactly what the judges are looking for

0:40:26 > 0:40:29cos Aled was a judge himself last year for us on One Man And His Dog.

0:40:29 > 0:40:31He definitely was, yes.

0:40:36 > 0:40:37Stand.

0:40:37 > 0:40:39Stand.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41Stand, stand.

0:40:42 > 0:40:43Stand.

0:40:43 > 0:40:49Wales here need a score of 79 to go ahead of England.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51- Stand.- A nice turn.

0:40:53 > 0:40:55And away we go up the first drive, sheep are settled,

0:40:55 > 0:40:57all in together.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00Two points dropped, then, on the fetch.

0:41:00 > 0:41:01A score of 18 out of 20.

0:41:01 > 0:41:04Maybe drifted a tad there.

0:41:09 > 0:41:11Lovely balance he's got there.

0:41:14 > 0:41:16And they've drifted to the right.

0:41:16 > 0:41:17Ohh!

0:41:18 > 0:41:22Seven sheep round the inside of the hurdle will be costly.

0:41:22 > 0:41:24Very costly.

0:41:24 > 0:41:26And they've dipped down a little bit there.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28Just coming down the hill now.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31Aled needs to be careful,

0:41:31 > 0:41:34he'll be under this one as well, if he...

0:41:34 > 0:41:35and he is.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38- Oh, my word.- Two drive gates down.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41That will be very expensive.

0:41:42 > 0:41:44And a big turn.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46Just 11 points then on the drive,

0:41:46 > 0:41:4811 out of 30.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50Well, it goes without saying, this

0:41:50 > 0:41:52is definitely not going to plan.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54No, but it just goes to show,

0:41:54 > 0:41:57it doesn't matter what history you've got, every dog has his day.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59Yeah.

0:41:59 > 0:42:00Stand.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02Stand!

0:42:06 > 0:42:10- Aled won't take his foot off the pedal, that's for sure.- Stand.

0:42:10 > 0:42:11Stand.

0:42:13 > 0:42:15Stand.

0:42:15 > 0:42:16Come-bye.

0:42:16 > 0:42:19Just looking for one of these collared ewes

0:42:19 > 0:42:21to separate from the flock.

0:42:25 > 0:42:26Stand, stand.

0:42:26 > 0:42:30- Eight minutes to go.- Now, there may be a shout here.

0:42:30 > 0:42:31Stand.

0:42:31 > 0:42:32Now then...

0:42:35 > 0:42:37Here we go, spot on, good one.

0:42:37 > 0:42:40Liked that. Nice.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43Nine for that single.

0:42:44 > 0:42:48Cap will regroup the sheep as Aled walks over to the pen.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51- Still plenty of time left with this pen.- Stand.

0:42:51 > 0:42:54On a score of 64 at the moment.

0:42:56 > 0:42:57Stand, stand.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01Nice line into the pen now.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03Aled's got them roughly where he wants them.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08The sheep on the heel of the gate.

0:43:08 > 0:43:10One just looked to go down the side.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13- Beautifully done. - Cap covered his side.

0:43:13 > 0:43:16- Good job.- And that is how to pen seven sheep.

0:43:17 > 0:43:19Perfection at the pen,

0:43:19 > 0:43:21a score of ten.

0:43:21 > 0:43:26Aled, like so many others today, losing valuable points on the drive.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29And proving that even an old master can make mistakes.

0:43:30 > 0:43:33The technical term for you, actually, Aled, is "the man".

0:43:33 > 0:43:35I don't know about that.

0:43:35 > 0:43:38When it comes to trialling, you've won pretty much everything going,

0:43:38 > 0:43:41so it just goes to show, you don't know what's going to happen.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44Exactly. And that's the beauty of this sport.

0:43:53 > 0:43:57Florence Court in the breathtaking countryside of County Fermanagh

0:43:57 > 0:44:01is the spectacular site for a very special championship -

0:44:01 > 0:44:05the 40th anniversary of One Man And His Dog.

0:44:06 > 0:44:09All day, our teams have been giving it their all,

0:44:09 > 0:44:11battling against a tricky cross-drive...

0:44:11 > 0:44:13No, no, too quick.

0:44:13 > 0:44:15..and driving rain...

0:44:15 > 0:44:18The weather is not messing around today.

0:44:19 > 0:44:22..delivering some moments of truly inspired shepherding.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25And that is how to pen seven sheep.

0:44:25 > 0:44:30England are just ahead, but Ireland and Scotland are still to run.

0:44:30 > 0:44:34At stake, the chance to be crowned best of the best.

0:44:34 > 0:44:38For the last three years, that honour has fallen to Ireland.

0:44:38 > 0:44:41Now it's down to Sammy Long and his dog Roy

0:44:41 > 0:44:44to see if they can secure an historic fourth victory.

0:44:44 > 0:44:48- Here they are in front of... - And Roy's gone off left.
