0:05:53 > 0:05:55- We try different ones...

0:05:55 > 0:05:59- ..both the live market - and the slaughterhouse market.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01- They look great, Dafydd.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41- Yes, we've tried a lot - of different breeds over the years.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46- But recently, since 2011, - we've gone into the Aberdeen Angus.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49- It's proving to be - a good cow so far.

0:06:49 > 0:06:54- How many Welsh Blacks - and how many Aberdeens do you have?

0:06:54 > 0:06:56- We cross back and forth a bit.

0:06:56 > 0:07:01- Personally, I think the best cow - you'll get is a cross.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06- It's always going to be better - than any pedigree cow you could buy.

0:07:06 > 0:07:11- Regarding the calves, how old - will they be when they're sold?

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- Recently, we've been aiming - for 16 months.

0:07:17 > 0:07:18- About that, really.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22- But looking at the way - the market's going...

0:07:22 > 0:07:24- ..younger will be the way to go.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29- Ten-month-old calves, even eight, - have been selling so well...

0:07:29 > 0:07:31- ..there's no point keeping them.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35- There are costs - with TB testing and so on...

0:07:35 > 0:07:37- ..so we may as well - get rid of them earlier.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44- You appear to be - a happy young farmer, Dafydd.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47- I'm very lucky - to have been born here.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02- We get on well - and have a lot of fun...

0:08:02 > 0:08:05- ..which is very important - in this industry.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10- It's a lonely industry at times, - especially in Meirionnydd.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13- It's almost - the most rural part of Wales.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18- It's important that young people - get together and enjoy themselves.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25- Six months after the UK decided - to leave the European Union...

0:08:25 > 0:08:30- ..the Prime Minister, Theresa May, - has outlined her objectives...

0:08:30 > 0:08:34- ..on how she sees the country - moving forwards in the future.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36- The big question is...

0:08:36 > 0:08:39- ..what effect will this have - on Welsh agriculture?

0:08:40 > 0:08:44- At this year's annual - FUW breakfast in Cardiff Bay...

0:08:44 > 0:08:48- ..what was the reaction - to Theresa May's announcement...

0:08:52 > 0:08:56- What did they make of Carwyn Jones - and Leanne Wood's White Paper...

0:08:56 > 0:08:58- ..on their priorities for Wales?

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- The biggest problem - is the uncertainty.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04- What we need is leadership.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07- One story from Cardiff - and another from London...

0:09:07 > 0:09:09- ..does create problems for us.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13- The Single Market - is so important to Wales.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18- One third of our lambs - from our flocks go to Europe.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22- The worst-case scenario - of going with the WTO...

0:09:22 > 0:09:28- ..is that we'll have to pay - a 40-60% tariff on our lambs.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32- It might be 80% on our beef.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35- We can't live with that.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43- I've heard the First Minister, - Carwyn Jones, say recently...

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- ..that agriculture - is important to Wales.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50- What Theresa May has said - scares me a little.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53- If we can't sell into Europe...

0:09:54 > 0:09:59- ..we have to look at how we can - sustain the Welsh rural economy.

0:10:00 > 0:10:05- It might come from other sources, - but it won't happen overnight.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09- There is a cliff edge looming - two years from Article 50.

0:10:09 > 0:10:14- It's important that we have time - to go from one place to another.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20- It's essential that we have - a free market with no tariffs.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25- If we don't get it, we must look - at the reality of the situation.

0:10:25 > 0:10:30- 90% of exported agricultural - products go to Europe.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34- It's easy enough to say it...

0:10:34 > 0:10:38- ..and I do welcome trade - with any country...

0:10:38 > 0:10:43- ..but if you look at it, - 500 million people live in Europe.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47- That compares to 4.5 million - living in New Zealand.

0:10:47 > 0:10:53- New Zealand represents - just 1% of the European population.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56- We have to look at it - in that context.

0:10:59 > 0:11:04- Euryn Jones is Regional - Agriculture Director with HSBC.

0:11:05 > 0:11:11- How much of an impact has Brexit - had on Welsh agriculture up to now?

0:11:11 > 0:11:17- Market prices strengthened - over the second half of last year.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21- That's especially true - of the milk market.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24- Milk prices - have been very low for two years.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- Those markets have strengthened.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29- For beef and lamb products...

0:11:29 > 0:11:33- ..the markets have benefitted - from a weaker pound.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- It makes our exports - more competitive...

0:11:36 > 0:11:39- ..and imports - a little more expensive.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43- The Single Payment has also been - larger than in recent years.

0:11:43 > 0:11:48- A year ago, Huw Davies - of Trefaes Fawr, Newcastle Emlyn...

0:11:48 > 0:11:50- ..held an open day on his farm...

0:11:50 > 0:11:55- ..to highlight the wider importance - of agriculture to rural Wales.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59- What were his impressions of what - the Prime Minister had to say?

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- What would be the best deal for you?

0:12:03 > 0:12:07- Personally, I'd like to keep - the deal that we have now.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11- If we know what we have, - we can keep going.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15- I would be happy if we found - new markets for our produce...

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- ..in addition to what we have now.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- But the worry is - that Theresa May said...

0:12:22 > 0:12:25- .."Out of Europe - means out of the Single Market".

0:12:26 > 0:12:27- It's easy to come out...

0:12:27 > 0:12:31- ..but she hasn't said what other - markets will take our products.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34- That is a big worry.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37- I'm not happy - to lose what we have now.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39- Do you think that agriculture...

0:12:39 > 0:12:43- ..is getting a fair hearing - in the Brexit negotiations?

0:12:43 > 0:12:45- No, not at all.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49- There's plenty of talk - and plenty of promises...

0:12:49 > 0:12:52- ..but I'm worried - about the end result.

0:12:53 > 0:12:58- I don't believe they think - that we are very important...

0:12:58 > 0:13:01- ..in the grand scheme of things.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- I'm not sure they take enough notice - of rural affairs.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08- It's a huge worry.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11- You can't change things - within a year.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15- It takes time - to change from one market...

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- ..to one with other countries.

0:13:19 > 0:13:25- We know how long it has taken - to get our beef into America.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32- We asked one expert - whether there are answers.

0:13:32 > 0:13:37- Wyn Morris is a lecturer - at Aberystwyth University.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43- When we lost that market during - the Foot and Mouth outbreak...

0:13:43 > 0:13:46- ..we saw the effect - it had on the industry.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49- In the short term...

0:13:49 > 0:13:54- ..I foresee a lack of investment - in the industry.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58- The opening of new markets - will be a slow process.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02- The big question is, - what will all this cost?

0:14:03 > 0:14:04- When we make treaties...

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- ..it will favour some industries - and not others.

0:14:08 > 0:14:14- As we look to the future, - what can Welsh farmers expect?

0:14:14 > 0:14:16- We have to be positive.

0:14:16 > 0:14:17- We have great produce.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20- The industry has to work together...

0:14:21 > 0:14:24- ..and farmers - need to look at production costs.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27- Our produce - is recognized across the world.

0:14:27 > 0:14:32- That produce - can demand higher prices.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34- We have to make it work.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38- As far as farms are concerned, - we have to look at resources.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43- Maybe we should look more - towards tourism...

0:14:43 > 0:14:47- ..environmental projects - and diversification...

0:14:47 > 0:14:51- ..in order for us - to work efficiently...

0:14:51 > 0:14:56- ..and so that the resources - are used to their full potential.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03- That's all for part one, - but after the break...

0:15:03 > 0:15:08- ..Alun finds out how farmers - are working with a National Park.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10- We'll see you in a few minutes.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52- Centuries of agriculture have - created the special landscape here.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57- In order to protect these fragile - habitats for future generations...

0:16:33 > 0:16:37- We saw an opportunity for us - to come in as a National Park...

0:16:38 > 0:16:40- ..to do something on the mountain.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42- We can't get money - to do much up here...

0:16:43 > 0:16:47- ..but there's an opportunity now - to work with these associations...

0:16:48 > 0:16:50- ..to put some projects together.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54- Looking back, one of the problems - was overgrazing.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57- Is that true these days?

0:16:57 > 0:17:01- No, it isn't. As you can see, - it's going the other way now.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04- We're on Carreg Goch common.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06- There are only four grazers now.

0:17:07 > 0:17:11- We've fenced off some areas of - the Black Mountain for conservation.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14- If you go there today, - you wouldn't be able to walk there.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19- If all the mountain gets like that, - it'll be no good to anybody.

0:17:19 > 0:17:23- What's the outlook on persuading - farmers to put more sheep out?

0:17:23 > 0:17:26- Why has that change happened?

0:17:26 > 0:17:30- There are no young people - coming in to farm the mountain.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33- You have to be raised - on the mountain.

0:17:33 > 0:17:38- I imagine one of the challenges - in the days of modern agriculture...

0:17:38 > 0:17:43- ..is getting people to put any sort - of livestock up on a mountain.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47- Yes, there aren't many people - who keep cattle.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50- There's a huge cost - to feed them during winter.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53- People used to turn them - onto the mountain...

0:17:53 > 0:17:56- ..but the cattle - aren't available now.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58- The same is true of sheep.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- They're too big - to survive here over winter.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05- Even the mountain farmers - send them down over the winter.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07- It's very costly.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11- It makes you wonder whether - they'll go back to smaller sheep...

0:18:12 > 0:18:14- ..and use the mountain a bit more.

0:18:14 > 0:18:15- It would be very nice to see that.

0:18:15 > 0:18:16- It would be very nice to see that.- - That would be good.

0:18:16 > 0:18:21- In the end, what we need - is a market for the lambs.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25- That's it. The supermarkets - have made things the way they are.

0:18:25 > 0:18:29- They wanted bigger lamb joints.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33- Anything under 40 kilos - is a much cheaper price.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36- Over 40 kilos always sells best now.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40- Getting the mountain lambs - up to that is quite an achievement.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44- With the Park extending - for over 520 square miles...

0:18:44 > 0:18:47- ..there's quite an area - to look after.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51- One completed scheme - is the restoration of a sheepfold...

0:18:51 > 0:18:54- ..near Craig-y-Nos - in the Swansea Valley.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56- At its heart is one large circle.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59- It's a very interesting design.

0:18:59 > 0:19:04- You're right. - The whole fold is in a circle.

0:19:04 > 0:19:10- The large circle is inside and the - small ones go off from the middle.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13- As you can see, - all the holes go into each fold.

0:19:13 > 0:19:18- And those holes lead - to a special fold for each farm.

0:19:18 > 0:19:19- Yes.

0:19:19 > 0:19:25- I've had a piece of paper - from the chairman of Carreg Goch...

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- ..and the name of every farm - is on every fold.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32- I think those farms - are under forestry now.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35- They were small farms at that time.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40- You can see the size of the folds - and they're not very big.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43- This is key to understanding...

0:19:44 > 0:19:46- ..the history of land use - in this area.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48- You're right.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52- There are folds everywhere, - but nobody uses them now...

0:19:53 > 0:19:56- ..because everyone - gathers at the farm now.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58- They're all deteriorating.

0:19:58 > 0:20:03- The folds that haven't been used for - years have a lot of growth in them.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06- The sheep that are on the mountain - in the summer...

0:20:06 > 0:20:09- ..are starting - to travel through them now.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13- They're in and out - seeking a bit of shade, probably.

0:20:14 > 0:20:19- Garry Williams from Blaencennen - Farm, Gwynfe, Llangadog...

0:20:19 > 0:20:23- ..has been a key part - of the grazing partnership.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29- The grazers we have now - on the Black Mountain here...

0:20:29 > 0:20:31- ..include Carreg Goch and Palleg.

0:20:32 > 0:20:38- Two we have here on the Black - Mountain have gone into Glastir.

0:20:39 > 0:20:44- You have Glanaman and Pedol y Twrch - and Mynydd Myddfai.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46- Five of us have gone in.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49- We have land around the farm...

0:20:49 > 0:20:53- ..but also, - we're what you call commoners.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57- We have rights to graze sheep, - cattle and horses.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00- Those rights - go back years and years.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02- Usually, if you buy a farm...

0:21:03 > 0:21:07- ..you get the rights to put stock - out on the mountain with the farm.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11- It's not easy to make a living - on an upland farm.

0:21:11 > 0:21:16- Lots of schemes have been lost.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20- Is that what drove you - towards Glastir, mainly?

0:21:20 > 0:21:22- Through modulation...

0:21:23 > 0:21:27- ..we've lost close to 20% - of the Single Payment.

0:21:28 > 0:21:34- Also, the HLCA and Tir Mynydd - have come to an end.

0:21:34 > 0:21:40- So we had to look at the - Glastir scheme on the mountain...

0:21:40 > 0:21:45- ..to try to get some money - back into the area.

0:21:46 > 0:21:47- At first glance...

0:21:47 > 0:21:51- ..the Brecon Beacons and the - Black Mountain area look wonderful.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55- But there are problems - which need to be resolved...

0:21:55 > 0:21:58- ..to ensure a thriving future - for the National Park.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02- The co-operation between - the Black Mountain grazers...

0:22:03 > 0:22:06- ..and the Park Authority - is obviously paying off here.

0:22:06 > 0:22:11- The National Park and the grazers...

0:22:11 > 0:22:15- ..definitely work much more closely - than we used to.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20- Fair play to the Park, they - wanted us to go into the scheme...

0:22:21 > 0:22:24- ..and they helped us to go into it.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28- At the end of the day, - they own the mountain...

0:22:28 > 0:22:32- ..but they need us too as grazers...

0:22:32 > 0:22:36- ..to help them to manage - and look after the mountain.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41- I think the Government - and the Assembly...

0:22:41 > 0:22:44- ..will be quite happy with that.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48- These schemes last five years - at the moment.

0:22:49 > 0:22:50- What's next?

0:22:51 > 0:22:56- We've heard that this scheme - will go on until 2019.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58- We don't know what's happening - after that.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02- We don't know what's happening - with every scheme.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07- I hope that we've shown - the Government and the Assembly...

0:23:08 > 0:23:09- ..the work is going on here.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13- Someone has to look after - the countryside.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16- Someone has to do it.

0:23:16 > 0:23:21- I think we can show that we've - accomplished some very good work.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32- That's it for this week.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34- We'll be back - at the same time next week.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37- Until then, thanks for your company.

0:23:38 > 0:23:39- Goodbye.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57- S4C Subtitles by Testun Cyf.
