0:00:04 > 0:00:05In the heart of Africa,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08a young family is heading for an epic adventure.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12They are moving with their three children

0:00:12 > 0:00:13to a remote Kenyan wilderness.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19Mum Saba is here to run a safari camp...

0:00:19 > 0:00:20Welcome!

0:00:20 > 0:00:25..while dad Frank is helping to protect elephants...

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Collar's almost on. Now the scary bit.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31..but raising a family and running a business in the bush

0:00:31 > 0:00:34is going to be a massive challenge.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37There are monkeys in the kitchen...

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Oh, you monkeys, I'm going to kill you!

0:00:40 > 0:00:42..floods threatening the camp...

0:00:42 > 0:00:44It's looking like it's going to be a mega storm.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46..and wildlife in need of help.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48Now my heart really is in my mouth.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50It's going to be a huge gamble.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Will the business survive Saba's first season in charge?

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Oh, my God.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01This time, a power crisis strikes camp.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04I'm just having such problems with this.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06It's driving me absolutely crazy.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08With the start of high season, it's a disaster.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Saba's pulled away to a medical emergency...

0:01:14 > 0:01:16It's bad and it needs urgent action.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21..and Frank is called out to help an injured lioness.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Could be a snake bite,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26she could have been hit by a car,

0:01:26 > 0:01:27but we just don't know.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44It's six in the morning and Saba is already out

0:01:44 > 0:01:47searching for lions to show her guests.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51They come here for top-notch safaris,

0:01:51 > 0:01:55so she must make sure she knows where to find every animal.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Lions in Samburu are mostly nocturnal,

0:02:00 > 0:02:04so the key thing is to get up hellishly early in the morning

0:02:04 > 0:02:07and get out to wherever you think they are at first light.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Top of her wish list - young cubs.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18To have new cubs, you know, the first cubs in quite a long time,

0:02:18 > 0:02:20is just so exciting.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23I can't quite believe it.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26She's looking for pawprints along the road

0:02:26 > 0:02:30so she can track them down as soon as the sun rises.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34This is real lion habitat here. They love this saltbrush.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36They could be anywhere here.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39It's extremely difficult to find them

0:02:39 > 0:02:42if you don't find their tracks in the morning.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Staying one step ahead of the animals is essential

0:02:45 > 0:02:47because this is the busiest week of the season.

0:02:55 > 0:03:01Elephant Watch Camp has room for 12 guests in six luxury tents.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03With camp running at full capacity,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05they can't afford anything to go wrong.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Wildlife guide Bernard is off

0:03:09 > 0:03:11to pick up the first of the new arrivals.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15I'm so excited to meet new people every time

0:03:15 > 0:03:20because it gives me an opportunity to show them what we have here.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24This season, this is the first time we're having a full camp.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28It's going to be a very intense period.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32So far this season, guest bookings have been down.

0:03:32 > 0:03:33For the business to succeed,

0:03:33 > 0:03:37the team must make sure everything runs like clockwork.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Saba is still searching for lions.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49Look! There! There, there, there, there! There's the lioness.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53So exciting!

0:04:01 > 0:04:05Those two cubs are tiny still.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08They're probably about six, seven weeks old.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13(So wonderful.)

0:04:20 > 0:04:24The reserve is home to 40 lions living in three separate prides.

0:04:28 > 0:04:33The Koitogor Pride is the largest and they are all known by name.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39The oldest female is called Nabo.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44She has two five-year-old daughters.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Now she's a grandmother

0:04:49 > 0:04:52and the Koitogor Pride has a third generation.

0:04:58 > 0:05:03It's one of Nabo's daughters who has given birth to these young cubs.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06These little guys are the grandchildren of the first

0:05:06 > 0:05:08lioness that I ever got to know, here in Samburu.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10She's now a really old female,

0:05:10 > 0:05:13who's called Nabo, which means "one" in Samburu,

0:05:13 > 0:05:17because she used to have one block black spot on her nose.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Yeah, and she's still very much an important presence in this pride,

0:05:21 > 0:05:25and sticks around the central area of Samburu.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29In fact, she will definitely be having some contact with these cubs.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32It's exactly what Saba had hoped for.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36The reserve's newest arrivals are just in time for high season.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41This is absolutely wonderful because, when our guests arrive,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44this is one of the best things that we can come out and show them.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Oh! They are so sweet.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53With the cubs found, she returns to greet her guests.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Back at camp, the team is ready and waiting.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15- Hello, I'm Saba.- I'm Shamila.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18Nice to meet you.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23Just when it seems everything is under control, there's bad news.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Oh, God. Look at this. Nothing's freezing.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33We've got serious problems with our solar system right now.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35And, look, you see, none of the ice is freezing.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37This has been here all night and it still hasn't frozen.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39I just don't know where the problem is.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42I don't know if we've got a short somewhere, or if it's the batteries,

0:06:42 > 0:06:45or if it's the solar panels or what.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50The camp is designed to run on solar energy,

0:06:50 > 0:06:55but the ageing system is no longer powerful enough to run the freezers.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58Most of the time, the guests haven't got a clue of what is going on

0:06:58 > 0:07:00and that's exactly how it should be.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02But I just need to make sure that they have the

0:07:02 > 0:07:05experience of a lifetime when they come here

0:07:05 > 0:07:08and they don't know about any of my issues behind-the-scenes.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10But it has not come as a great time

0:07:10 > 0:07:12because I've got so many people on camp.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Saba needs to do everything she can to get the power

0:07:17 > 0:07:20back on before her clients notice.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34Across the reserve, at the Save The Elephants headquarters,

0:07:34 > 0:07:38Saba's husband Frank has received worrying news.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42There's a wounded lion out in the park.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45It's about 20 minutes downriver, so I'm just going to go out

0:07:45 > 0:07:49and have a look at it, and see if there's anything we can do.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52The reserve's lion research team are away

0:07:52 > 0:07:54and Frank is closest to the scene.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57There's a few different possibilities of what could

0:07:57 > 0:07:59have happened to this lioness.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01It could be a snake bite,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04she could have been hit by a car, but we just don't know.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08So, we're just going to have a look before we start making any guesses.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20Back at camp, the guests have no idea there's a power problem.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24Saba has managed to get hold of energy expert Bart Fugers.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- So, come, let me show you the solar panels.- Yep.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30Luckily, Bart was working at a nearby lodge,

0:08:30 > 0:08:32so he's dropped everything to come and help.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36- So, these are our panels up here. - Yep.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38We never get through the night so, in the evenings,

0:08:38 > 0:08:41we're having to put the generator on from six o'clock,

0:08:41 > 0:08:46and even with that, by five o'clock in the morning, all the power's gone.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48It's not just the freezers Saba's worried about.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52There's not enough power to charge the guests' cameras and phones.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55The system needs a scale-up.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57The solar panels, which need replacement,

0:08:57 > 0:09:00it's going to be a big investment.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03It's not going to be a quick fix.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07At the start of high season, this is the last thing Saba needs.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09The whole camp relies on solar power.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Everything from, you know, all the lights and the fridges

0:09:12 > 0:09:14and the freezers - absolutely everything.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16Because we're so remote here, we can't get onto the mains

0:09:16 > 0:09:18and, you know, we're an eco-camp.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21We don't believe in having some huge great generator

0:09:21 > 0:09:24with a whole lot of disgusting fumes coming out of it.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27But the problem is our system is quite old now

0:09:27 > 0:09:30and it's in urgent need of an upgrade,

0:09:30 > 0:09:33and I'm really, really struggling to get enough power.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39But her problems are about to get even worse.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40A member of camp is ill.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43I've got a sick person here. Let me come back.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46I just have to go and deal with this. Let me find out what's going on.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51Latoya. Malaria?

0:09:58 > 0:10:02I think I might have to take him to the clinic, right now.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04Yup.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06MAN SPEAKS OWN LANGUAGE

0:10:10 > 0:10:12I just have to take this guy to the clinic.

0:10:12 > 0:10:17Are you OK getting on with everything here on your own? OK.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19OK, I'm coming right now.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22All right. Bye.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24If somebody gets sick out here,

0:10:24 > 0:10:27they'll sit at home and they'll deal with it

0:10:27 > 0:10:29until it gets really bad,

0:10:29 > 0:10:31so by the time to me and they need to go to a clinic,

0:10:31 > 0:10:34it's bad and it needs urgent action.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38So, I mean, the thing is, if you don't treat malaria, it can kill you.

0:10:38 > 0:10:43Latoya must be tested while he still has a fever,

0:10:43 > 0:10:45but it's 20 minutes to the closest clinic.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50Frank is dealing with his own emergency.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53He's found the injured lioness.

0:10:57 > 0:10:58She's lying under a tree.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03And...I've stayed a little distance away,

0:11:03 > 0:11:05but it's not looking very good.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09It doesn't look like she's breathing.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14I can't see any movement at all.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17Frank has alerted the park rangers and he's updating

0:11:17 > 0:11:20the reserve's lion expert Shivani Bhalla,

0:11:20 > 0:11:23who has studied these lions for 12 years.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25- Hi, Shiv?- 'Yeah?'

0:11:25 > 0:11:28We've just arrived and she seems to have stopped breathing.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31It doesn't look good at all.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42They are too late to help.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Oh, what a tragedy.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48You know, there are so few lions left.

0:11:52 > 0:11:53And whatever killed this one...

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Oh, who knows. We've got to wait and find out

0:11:57 > 0:12:00what killed it before we jump to any conclusions.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17Frank wants to find out how she died.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- There's no visible wounds. - No visible.

0:12:20 > 0:12:25So, it may well have been a snake.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27A terrible tragedy right here.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37He calls the lion expert to confirm the identity of the lioness.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40All right. OK. Bye.

0:12:42 > 0:12:46- So...yeah, it's Nabo. - Yeah, I think it's Nabo.

0:12:46 > 0:12:51This is the first lioness that Saba identified.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55Nabo is the grandmother of the young cubs Saba saw this morning.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Saba's going to be devastated to hear this.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11Saba is arriving at the bush clinic with the sick man.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Jambo, jambo.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20She's concerned that Latoya has malaria.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25If he does, it has to be treated quickly.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29So, this has developed overnight because yesterday he was fine.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32The only way you can tell is looking for parasites in the blood.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46No malaria. Why do you think he's having this stomach pain?

0:13:49 > 0:13:51- Gastric?- Yes.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55It's a severe tummy bug.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58The doctor's prescribed a course of antibiotics

0:13:58 > 0:14:00and sent Latoya home to rest.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03OK, thank you. Bye.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12Back at the research centre,

0:14:12 > 0:14:16Frank is preparing to break the news of Nabo's death to Saba.

0:14:18 > 0:14:23Without Nabo to watch over them, the family is now much weaker.

0:14:23 > 0:14:28Young cubs like these are vulnerable to attack by roving males,

0:14:28 > 0:14:31who will kill any cub that isn't their own.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36Nabo's death means there are fewer lionesses to keep the cubs safe.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48- Hello.- Hey, Sabs, how are you doing?

0:14:48 > 0:14:50- Hi, baby. OK.- Good.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52I've got some bad news, I'm afraid.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56This lion that was injured, it was your lioness.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00It was the lioness you first...

0:15:00 > 0:15:01identified with Shiv.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05- Nabo?- Nabo.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07- She's dead?- She's dead.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10- She's dead?! - She's dead. I'm sorry, baby.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19Life on this frontier is dangerous,

0:15:19 > 0:15:21even for lions.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25You don't get more fearless than a lioness...

0:15:26 > 0:15:31..and yet she's just gone down,

0:15:31 > 0:15:32perhaps through a snakebite.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35Seems like one of the more likely explanations.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37With snakes around,

0:15:37 > 0:15:40Frank is worried about the girls.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43It does make you think about Selkie running around here

0:15:43 > 0:15:46and how easy it would be for her to get bitten.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49I'm glad we've got the Warriors to stick around the kids.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52They're like a mobile safety fence,

0:15:52 > 0:15:55in that they'll make sure that most of the dangers

0:15:55 > 0:15:56are out of the way.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02Samburu warrior Nporian knows all about snakes.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04HE SPEAKS

0:16:04 > 0:16:08He wants to teach the girls how to avoid dangers in the bush.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20There are scorpions to watch out for

0:16:20 > 0:16:23and ant lions hiding under your feet.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Warriors grow up bush-wise.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Their survival depends on being able

0:16:32 > 0:16:35to read the signs of animal life around them.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Everything they need can be found here.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47One tree provides a weapon...

0:16:50 > 0:16:52..another provides a toothbrush.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58With Nporian's help, the girls are learning

0:16:58 > 0:17:02how to avoid the dangers all around them...

0:17:03 > 0:17:05..and how to look good in the bush!

0:17:16 > 0:17:18It's been a long day.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20For the children it's time for bed,

0:17:20 > 0:17:24but Saba still has guests to take care of.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26Well, my job is sort of partly to...

0:17:29 > 0:17:32You know, I'm running the camp, so I am keeping all the logistics going.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36Then, in the evening, when they come back after their game drives,

0:17:36 > 0:17:38it's my turn to be the hostess.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40So, you know, I make sure they're all OK,

0:17:40 > 0:17:43and we sit down and tell stories,

0:17:43 > 0:17:48and do my best to make them feel very passionate about Samburu.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50OK... Ready to face the music.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Saba's problems are not over yet.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56The solar system is still down

0:17:56 > 0:17:58and the freezers aren't freezing.

0:18:02 > 0:18:07Chef Serena is treating the guests to a traditional Samburu dinner.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48The food may be tasty,

0:18:48 > 0:18:52but without electricity the guests are eating by firelight.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54Saba hopes the romantic setting

0:18:54 > 0:18:57will distract them from the power shortage.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01HE SPEAKS OWN LANGUAGE

0:19:18 > 0:19:21THEY LAUGH

0:19:21 > 0:19:22They've pulled it off,

0:19:22 > 0:19:26but Saba must make sure she gets the power back on soon.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40This morning, the guest's day is starting early.

0:19:47 > 0:19:48Hello.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50- Hello.- Good morning.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57Wildlife guide Serenoy has an important mission ahead.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59These guests are from America

0:19:59 > 0:20:01and Saba wants to make sure

0:20:01 > 0:20:04they see the Koitagor lion pride.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09..those two tiny little cubs.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11I think they're a bit lion-crazy,

0:20:11 > 0:20:13- so it would be really wonderful... - OK.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17- ..if you can find them. Yeah? All right. Good luck today.- OK.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21Serenoy is heading to the area where Saba saw them.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26It's very difficult to find lions right now,

0:20:36 > 0:20:40Samburu's lions live in smaller prides than elsewhere in Africa.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46while males move between several groups.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52Pride-mates can spend months or even years apart,

0:20:52 > 0:20:55so both sexes need to be much more self-reliant.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00This could be why Samburu's males have such patchy manes.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05A huge necklace of fur is a handicap in thorny scrub

0:21:05 > 0:21:09and a low profile ensures better hunting.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15So, to see the lions, especially in this environment where there are

0:21:15 > 0:21:18so many who you have worked so hard to see a population of lions

0:21:18 > 0:21:21being restored, it would make it very special.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Bernard is on hand to oversee the installation.

0:22:06 > 0:22:08This is not an easy job.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11It's extremely delicate

0:22:11 > 0:22:12because it could collapse,

0:22:12 > 0:22:14then...we're done.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Then we have to depend on the moonlight...

0:22:16 > 0:22:17HE LAUGHS

0:22:17 > 0:22:20..and the stars.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22and the giraffes would gather

0:23:22 > 0:23:24and watch them like that.
