:00:38. > :00:43.Avery warm welcome to the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run. While the rest
:00:43. > :00:48.of the country is basking in an Indian summer it appears and
:00:48. > :00:52.Monsoon has arrived here. But I will not dampen the spirits of the
:00:52. > :01:02.10,000 runners taking part for fun but it may add an extra dimension
:01:02. > :01:12.
:01:12. > :01:18.and 28 Fred are here. We also have both Commonwealth marathon
:01:18. > :01:28.champions and the rainy Edinburgh champion. There is plenty of
:01:28. > :01:30.
:01:30. > :01:35.British talent including local favourite Andrew Lemoncello. And we
:01:35. > :01:40.have all the sights and sounds of the massive bend. I am joined by
:01:40. > :01:44.David Moorcroft. Challenging conditions today but a strong elite
:01:44. > :01:52.field. A very strong field and the runners will be fine in this
:01:52. > :01:56.weather because there used to it. It is a hard, hilly course, but
:01:56. > :02:01.with the defending champion in the men's race, Titus Mbishei, and
:02:01. > :02:05.Helen Clitheroe in the women's race, it is could be tough for them all.
:02:05. > :02:10.Andrew Lemoncello is back racing is common for the first time in a
:02:10. > :02:13.while and he has had a difficult summer. He had to pull out of the
:02:13. > :02:18.World Championships but he has made the transition from the
:02:18. > :02:21.steeplechase to the marathon pretty well. He still has a little way to
:02:21. > :02:27.go, a couple more minutes improvement to make the Great
:02:27. > :02:31.Britain team for London. He will want a solid race. Disappointment
:02:31. > :02:37.for Scottish fans because no Freya married but Helen Clitheroe is
:02:37. > :02:42.running. Helen is amazing, she's in her late Thirties but she has been
:02:42. > :02:46.revitalised. She ran really well indeed world championships and ran
:02:46. > :02:50.a good debut at a half-marathon in the Great North Run and I think
:02:50. > :02:57.today it is her final race before she has a little rest at the end of
:02:57. > :03:02.the season. It is not just about the elite runners. There are
:03:02. > :03:07.thousands of people taking part for fun. There is lots of money raised
:03:07. > :03:14.for charity at events like these and today is no different. We have
:03:14. > :03:19.lots of children from a high-school running here. Why are you running?
:03:19. > :03:22.Unfortunately, our deputy head passed away in the Summer Time To
:03:22. > :03:29.decided to get a group of senior students and staff together to
:03:29. > :03:36.raise money towards cancer research UK. It is a bit of a challenge and
:03:36. > :03:42.the dead at the head he passed away enjoyed a challenge. -- the deputy
:03:42. > :03:49.head who passed away. It means a lot to me. Why things should be
:03:49. > :03:55.very proud of the children. then we're off to Amsterdam as well.
:03:55. > :04:02.Yes, some teachers are going to do a marathon for Sick children and
:04:02. > :04:07.cancer research. Could be back competing in Scotland despite the
:04:07. > :04:11.conditions? The us, it is always fun competing in front of your own
:04:11. > :04:19.crowd -- yes. It is my role at their but it is the same for
:04:19. > :04:27.everyone. We can do is enjoyed as much as you can and run well. -- or
:04:27. > :04:32.you can do is enjoy it. It was miserable for while having to pull
:04:32. > :04:36.out of the world championships. I would have liked to go there and do
:04:36. > :04:41.well. But I'm completely healthy now and this will be a good test to
:04:41. > :04:47.see where my body is at. Helen, you have had a fantastic season and
:04:47. > :04:52.this will bring it to a fine end. Yes, I am really happy with how the
:04:52. > :04:58.idea has gone. It has been beyond my wildest dreams. It is nice to
:04:58. > :05:01.finish off here in Edinburgh. I feel like I am getting ready for my
:05:01. > :05:07.break now and winding down a little bit so I am looking forward to the
:05:07. > :05:12.end of the race so I can put my feet up! The conditions of wet and
:05:12. > :05:17.pretty cold, not the best way to enjoy season. No, but we are used
:05:17. > :05:23.to a bit of rain where I come from, in Preston! Hopefully it will not
:05:23. > :05:30.hinder us too much. This is perhaps one of your most successful seasons
:05:30. > :05:35.of all time. What do you put that down to? I just keep trying. I
:05:35. > :05:39.always believed in myself and did not want to give up. I wanted to
:05:39. > :05:44.give up on my terms, really. A few people probably thought I was
:05:44. > :05:49.getting on a bit and suggesting I should hang my shoes up, but I
:05:49. > :05:53.wanted to do it when I was ready. With the Olympics around the corner,
:05:53. > :05:58.it is a big motivator to keep going. I have changed event and that
:05:58. > :06:03.seemed to be working well for me. And I have been training at
:06:03. > :06:11.altitude quite a lot. It has given me even more motivation for next
:06:11. > :06:18.year. Charlie Reid, lovely to have you here on the start line. How
:06:18. > :06:23.many of these have you run? I've run on an amateur basis but this is
:06:23. > :06:28.the first competitive once and I was at school. Only one half of the
:06:28. > :06:38.Proclaimers with us today. Where is the other one? I suspect is in his
:06:38. > :06:39.
:06:39. > :06:42.bed! What has brought you out? is such a good charity, it is a St
:06:42. > :06:47.Andrew's based charity the time running for and they do a lot of
:06:47. > :06:55.work with cancer. Every family has been touched by cancer to some
:06:55. > :06:58.degree so I think if you can do something for it, I had been with
:06:58. > :07:02.the Organisation for a few years now and this has been the first run
:07:02. > :07:08.I had been able to do with them. The women's race is about to get
:07:08. > :07:18.under way and became joint Stuart Storey and Tim Hutchings. There is
:07:18. > :07:19.
:07:19. > :07:24.the elite women's field, a small and select group. Charlotte Purdue
:07:24. > :07:30.had knee surgery back in June and has not had a track season. She had
:07:30. > :07:35.a quick run out last week and this is her first big test of the year.
:07:35. > :07:43.Irene Jerotich is an athlete with a real pedigree. She won the
:07:43. > :07:48.Singapore Marathon last year. Helen Clitheroe, European indoor 3000m
:07:48. > :07:57.champion, and world class at differences from 1500m to 10,000
:07:57. > :08:01.metres. Lucy Kabuu, the class act, winner of the Great North Run just
:08:01. > :08:06.two weeks ago. She had a win in Sicily over eight kilometres just
:08:06. > :08:13.to sharpen up for this. We know she's in fabulous form. The others
:08:13. > :08:17.will compare their form to her. athletes are getting ready to go on
:08:17. > :08:24.this circuit, which is not particularly fast. There is just
:08:24. > :08:29.one substantial climb. The first mile or so is quite a quick sweep
:08:29. > :08:35.down the side of Hollywood Park with the wonderful few of Arthur's
:08:35. > :08:39.Seat on their right. I wonder if they will head off fairly quiet be
:08:39. > :08:43.or is somebody will attack early. I'd think you are correct in terms
:08:43. > :08:49.of the course. It is perhaps the most testing 10km course that we
:08:49. > :08:57.have on the circuit. It is challenging, it has its undulations,
:08:57. > :09:01.it is energy-sapping. The first part of this, up along Holyrood
:09:01. > :09:06.Park, they will soon turn into that and they will find a very steady
:09:06. > :09:13.uphill part up to almost two kilometres. It is quite testing and
:09:13. > :09:19.it will be steady, I think. Do not look for fast times today. The
:09:19. > :09:24.conditions are not exactly good for these athletes. There is little
:09:24. > :09:30.wind out there, which is a good factor. Whilst the rain has come
:09:30. > :09:36.down this morning it certainly has not affected the beauty of this
:09:36. > :09:40.part of the course. The course will sort them out, and sort them out
:09:40. > :09:48.fairly quickly as they head out towards the first kilometre mark.
:09:48. > :09:53.Helen Clitheroe and Lucy Kabuu at the front of this group. She was
:09:53. > :09:58.the winner of the Great North Run. She is in great form, a great
:09:58. > :10:03.spirit, and a young woman who will be the one to test a lot of them
:10:03. > :10:09.today. I will be fascinated to see how a Charlotte Purdue goes, there
:10:09. > :10:15.on the right. She is even smaller than Lucy Kabuu. She twisted her
:10:15. > :10:22.any back in May and had to have an operation back in June and had to
:10:22. > :10:27.sit out much of July and August. She said she only ran three seconds
:10:27. > :10:31.slower last week in her local Relate then she ran last year. This
:10:31. > :10:35.time last year she and so many of these athletes were heading off to
:10:36. > :10:43.the Commonwealth Games and she did well and came 4th in the 10,000
:10:43. > :10:48.metres. She my surprise herself here. But Lucy Kabuu, nearest the
:10:48. > :10:58.camera, we know she is in supreme shape. I would expect her to
:10:58. > :11:04.dominate. But they have gone off very slowly indeed. Helen Clitheroe,
:11:04. > :11:09.a new belief in this woman. We mentioned that she won the European
:11:09. > :11:12.3,000-metre titles indoors and that turned her career around. It was
:11:12. > :11:17.the belief that she needed in winning a major championship
:11:18. > :11:24.indoors. Since that time she has done very well. She still holds the
:11:24. > :11:29.record for the steeplechase, of course. She went to the World
:11:29. > :11:34.Championships at 5000m and make the final. She is running well and
:11:34. > :11:41.looks very comfortable. They are negotiating this first pick climb
:11:41. > :11:47.at a canter. I was interested to here Helen say that she can improve
:11:47. > :11:52.at 5000m because I regard that as been the linchpin of being a middle
:11:52. > :11:58.and long-distance runner. The short stride length there is showing how
:11:58. > :12:08.tough this part of the course is. You will see how far they have
:12:08. > :12:14.
:12:14. > :12:20.spread out so quickly. It is not quick but we did not expect that.
:12:20. > :12:27.Charlotte Purdue still there. very slow. 3.45 at one kilometre or,
:12:27. > :12:32.that is something like 37 minute pace. They have not really attacked
:12:32. > :12:42.that hill but now I expect we will see them striding out. The gap has
:12:42. > :12:44.
:12:44. > :12:49.already opened up. The chasing group, and the cloud cover is so
:12:49. > :12:55.low and the conditions, they're not bad at the moment. The rain seems
:12:55. > :13:01.to have abated a little. But this is a cause that is going to sort
:13:01. > :13:09.them out and has sorted them out very early indeed. Lucy Kabuu is
:13:09. > :13:13.one of nine children in the family. She is No. 6, we are told.
:13:13. > :13:21.Charlotte Purdue still in this, there are four away from the rest
:13:21. > :13:28.of the field. We talked about the quality, the excellent in this
:13:28. > :13:33.field, but we have the current men's and women's Great North Run
:13:33. > :13:39.champions, the reigning Commonwealth Games champions, the
:13:39. > :13:45.men's winner from last year. We have not got the women's winner
:13:46. > :13:55.from last year. But that is the sort of colour and that this race
:13:56. > :13:55.
:13:56. > :13:59.has attracted. And Lucy Kabuu is obviously a real talent. She was
:13:59. > :14:07.two minutes off her best for the half marathon in the Great North
:14:07. > :14:12.Run which shows what kind of form she is in. She is very much in
:14:12. > :14:20.control of herself. Eight kilometres to go. They have gone
:14:20. > :14:27.through two kilometres in around 7.10. It is certainly very slow.
:14:27. > :14:31.Lucy Kabuu beginning to stride out. She won the Great North Run in just
:14:31. > :14:35.outside 67 minutes. She is yet another Kenyan there will become a
:14:35. > :14:39.great marathon runner when she takes on that distant. She says she
:14:39. > :14:44.is looking to do that after the Olympic Games next year. She is
:14:44. > :14:49.dreading this little quartet away from the rest of the field.
:14:49. > :14:53.Charlotte Purdue, tucked in there, has got to hang him as long as
:14:54. > :15:01.possible to secured herself the top spot. Good to see Helen clear the
:15:01. > :15:08.road looking very relaxed. She has a lovely long stride -- Helen
:15:08. > :15:13.Clitheroe. It will be fascinating to see how close she can stay to
:15:13. > :15:23.Lucy Kabuu. Heading towards the third Plummer to it when they will
:15:23. > :15:24.
:15:24. > :15:34.turn left down Cowgate. -- the third kilometre of. The race,
:15:34. > :15:42.
:15:42. > :15:48.slowly but surely, beginning to break. Irene Jerotich is taking it
:15:48. > :15:58.on. She was 13th in the world championship marathon and 6th in
:15:58. > :16:01.the Great North one. She indicated a personal best of 71.03. Two
:16:01. > :16:06.Kenyans are getting away and Helen Clitheroe is finding it difficult.
:16:06. > :16:11.We have seen this before from the Kenyan athletes. They start to move
:16:12. > :16:15.early on and they like to dominate. One of these athletes is more
:16:15. > :16:18.experienced than the other. I remember Irene Jerotich falling at
:16:18. > :16:23.a drinks station in the Commonwealth Games and she carried
:16:23. > :16:29.on running, and the rest is history, because she won the title. She has
:16:29. > :16:34.lots of character and she is just sitting behind Kabuu. Kabuu does
:16:34. > :16:38.like to lead, that is certain for me. The first significant test on
:16:38. > :16:43.that down slope, 300 metres back. Immediately it has opened up the
:16:43. > :16:48.gaps. We know that Charlotte Purdue is not quite fit yet. Helen
:16:48. > :16:52.Clitheroe had a break after the Great North Run. Up until last
:16:52. > :16:59.weekend she was having a well- earned break after a long year. She
:16:59. > :17:07.has been in wonderful shape since February, when she won the indoor
:17:07. > :17:12.title in Paris. She did that break. Irene Jerotich tried to get away.
:17:12. > :17:21.All of a sudden Kabuu moved ahead of her. Now Irene Jerotich is
:17:21. > :17:24.struggling to hang, -- hang on, you know. The distance between her and
:17:24. > :17:32.Charlotte Purdue is increasing. Helen Clitheroe is finding it very
:17:32. > :17:35.difficult in 4th place. This is difficult. From a relatively modest
:17:35. > :17:42.Darton this 10 kilometre race, they have speeded up, that is clear to
:17:42. > :17:50.me. -- modest start in this race. And a cat this downhill part of the
:17:50. > :17:55.cause, a Kabuu making an effort to get away from everyone. A real
:17:55. > :18:00.contrast between Kabuu having her third race of 2011 and Helen
:18:00. > :18:05.Clitheroe, who has raced so much, so often and so well, it has to be
:18:05. > :18:08.said. I think Helen Clitheroe is now suffering from a very long year.
:18:08. > :18:13.Charlotte Purdue, quite the opposite. She has had a frustrating
:18:13. > :18:19.year. If she takes the scalp of Helen Clitheroe, that will be great.
:18:19. > :18:22.She needs to be working hard, opening up that gap. With Helen
:18:22. > :18:27.Clitheroe and Charlotte Purdue you are looking at the two extremes of
:18:27. > :18:33.distance running in the UK. Helen Clitheroe has served Britain so
:18:33. > :18:38.well for over 15 years, frankly. And Charlotte Purdue is young. This
:18:38. > :18:44.gap is opening up very slowly between Kabuu and Irene Jerotich.
:18:44. > :18:47.She is hanging on stoically, very stubborn. Kabuu is so much on top
:18:47. > :18:53.of her game, that frankly I feel she could up the pace at any time
:18:53. > :18:58.that she likes. She is deep in concentration, eyes down. I have to
:18:58. > :19:02.say about Charlotte Purdue, coming back from an operation here, a
:19:02. > :19:06.wonderful return. She was 14th in the world cross country
:19:06. > :19:11.championships over eight kilometres and showed terrific form. It was a
:19:11. > :19:18.shame that she got that injury and had that operation in June. But she
:19:18. > :19:23.is back. Her coach has a whole stable of runners, male and female.
:19:23. > :19:29.We can see Irene Jerotich. I reckon Charlotte Purdue may be catching
:19:29. > :19:33.her up. That gap between second and third is diminishing. That will
:19:33. > :19:43.encourage Charlotte Purdue. She really is moving well. Helen
:19:43. > :19:49.
:19:49. > :19:53.Clitheroe has dropped, that is for this. Young Charlotte Purdue is
:19:53. > :19:57.really catching the more experienced Irene Jerotich. She
:19:57. > :20:02.really is a believer. She is motoring down that hill. If she can
:20:02. > :20:08.get on the back of Irene Jerotich, who knows what effect it will have
:20:08. > :20:12.on her psyche? When she collapsed or will she fight on? We will see.
:20:12. > :20:17.The ideal situation for Charlotte Purdue. Having somebody in your
:20:17. > :20:21.sights enables you to get your head down and work hard. I do not know
:20:21. > :20:26.if Irene Jerotich is aware that she has closed down so much. I have not
:20:26. > :20:32.seen her glance back. She knows that she has got the race... The
:20:32. > :20:35.first glance! She knows she has lost the race. Kabuu is ahead and
:20:35. > :20:39.racing well. This is where the contest is taking place. Helen
:20:39. > :20:43.Clitheroe has not come round that corner in the background in 4th
:20:43. > :20:52.place yet. This will be a wonderful spot for Charlotte Purdue, coming
:20:52. > :20:56.into this winter. Approaching the halfway mark. Five kilometres to go
:20:56. > :21:00.in the 10 kilometre race. Charlotte Purdue is closing in on second
:21:00. > :21:05.place. Irene Jerotich looks to be faltering. Look at this. If
:21:05. > :21:10.Charlotte can go past, who knows what effect it will have on the
:21:10. > :21:15.tall Kenyan. Low-cut the difference in stature between these two. --
:21:15. > :21:24.looked at the difference. The determination on the face of
:21:24. > :21:34.Charlotte Purdue is wonderful. She wants to win. She is a winner.
:21:34. > :21:35.
:21:36. > :21:38.Kabuu went through in 17.06. Charlotte Purdue is eight seconds
:21:38. > :21:47.down on the leader. This battle has drawn her closer and closer to the
:21:47. > :21:54.leader, Kabuu. This is the first Irene Jerotich is aware, I suspect,
:21:54. > :21:59.that she was being closed down. can sue the lead that Kabuu has got.
:21:59. > :22:06.Just so easy. She floats along the road. The diminutive character,
:22:06. > :22:09.just a bit taller than Charlotte Purdue. She drifts along, in total
:22:10. > :22:18.command of herself. Now she demonstrates what distance running
:22:18. > :22:23.should be all about. She is a champion. I spoke do there a couple
:22:23. > :22:30.of days ago. She said she job to for 40 minutes before coming up
:22:30. > :22:35.here. She has just been jogging, based in London. Along with Martin
:22:35. > :22:40.Mathathi, the male winner of the Great North Run. Total relaxation.
:22:40. > :22:50.The face relaxed, the shoulder relaxed, good stride length. That
:22:50. > :22:51.
:22:51. > :22:56.is a lovely technique. Wonderful technique. 16.58 at five kilometres.
:22:56. > :22:59.I am sure the second half will be quicker. Charlotte Purdue has
:22:59. > :23:03.passed Irene Jerotich. The Commonwealth champion in the
:23:03. > :23:07.marathon. It is no good getting by somebody and having a breather
:23:07. > :23:13.because they sit on your shoulder. Now she has to put her head down
:23:13. > :23:16.and push hard for the next four minutes and tried to get a gap. You
:23:16. > :23:20.can see a Irene Jerotich working very hard, being aware of that. She
:23:20. > :23:24.is getting in the slipstream of Charlotte Purdue and she will dog
:23:24. > :23:30.at her heels. If you are going to go past somebody then you have to
:23:30. > :23:37.go right pass them. You cannot sit one metre ahead. Charlotte Purdue
:23:37. > :23:39.is glancing herself. She is mature beyond her years. She has won of
:23:39. > :23:43.the major junior cross-country titles that there are. She has done
:23:43. > :23:51.well at world level as well. She has had this little bit of a
:23:51. > :23:55.problem. Look at Irene Jerotich coming back. Look at the margin.
:23:55. > :24:05.Four kilometres to go in the 10 kilometre race. This woman is
:24:05. > :24:10.
:24:10. > :24:14.metres or so. Irene Jerotich, can she hang on to the young Briton?
:24:15. > :24:19.Charlotte Purdue increases her stride pattern. The cadence
:24:19. > :24:26.increases. Trying to get away with Irene Jerotich trying to stay in
:24:26. > :24:34.contest. The marathon expert, the tall figure, in third place now.
:24:34. > :24:41.Look at this. Parallax can you be? Less than 2000 metres to go. -- of
:24:41. > :24:45.how relaxed can you be? Absolutely wonderful for Kabuu. She has
:24:45. > :24:50.completely controlled the race. She will be heading around the Scott
:24:50. > :24:57.Monument, the National Art Gallery, down to Waverly station soon. Then
:24:57. > :25:04.Jeffrey Street, Canongate, Abbey Strand and into the finish. Less
:25:04. > :25:09.than 2000 metres to go. We have spoken a lot about the talent is
:25:09. > :25:14.young woman has. She was 4th in the Commonwealth Games in the 10,000
:25:14. > :25:19.metres. She came in at number six in the 5000 metres. She was
:25:19. > :25:23.learning a trade there. But then that injury this summer, having the
:25:23. > :25:27.operation. It is clear that she is back in business and very close to
:25:27. > :25:37.what we need to be her best at this distance. She is going to come into
:25:37. > :25:38.
:25:38. > :25:48.second place, no question. She truly deserves it. Lucie Cabrol,
:25:48. > :25:50.
:25:50. > :25:56.totally and utterly in control. -- Lucie Kabuu. Deceptively quick. A
:25:56. > :26:00.little bland and she must think that is not bad. -- a little glance.
:26:00. > :26:03.Putting the pressure on as she approaches the finish. She will
:26:03. > :26:08.celebrate this run for some time. It will not be the fastest that we
:26:08. > :26:14.have seen, I don't think, but it has been one of the most decisive
:26:14. > :26:20.wins that we have seen. Remember who it won last year, Florence, so
:26:20. > :26:25.will this be the route that this young woman takes, too? Kabuu comes
:26:25. > :26:33.towards the line. The dominant run from the Kenyan. Winner of the
:26:33. > :26:37.Great North Run. Winner of the Great Edinburgh Run today. A
:26:37. > :26:41.dominant performance from the Kenyan. Charlotte Purdue is about
:26:41. > :26:45.30 seconds down. This young girl has had a very frustrating year
:26:45. > :26:54.with that operation back in June on one of gurneys. She had keyhole
:26:54. > :26:58.surgery but she has bounced back. We will certainly see her in the
:26:58. > :27:01.forthcoming European cross-country championships and World Cross
:27:01. > :27:11.Country Championships. Second place here, I think this young lady will
:27:11. > :27:11.
:27:11. > :27:21.make the Olympic team next year. That winning time, 32.28. And Irene
:27:21. > :27:24.
:27:24. > :27:31.Jerotich will be about 20 seconds match that of the women's line-up
:27:31. > :27:37.in the early days. This is the Commonwealth Games marathon
:27:37. > :27:42.champion. Me is the first to be introduced. Andrew Lemoncello, a
:27:42. > :27:49.young man based here. We do not see him running here very often. He
:27:49. > :27:53.will have his home crowd supporting him all the way. And then the
:27:53. > :28:03.European marathon silver medallist, former 10,000 metres champion from
:28:03. > :28:06.
:28:06. > :28:11.Spain. Jose Manuel Martinez. Now we have the world 10,000 metres bronze
:28:11. > :28:17.medallist, the recent winner of the Great North Run, the man for the
:28:17. > :28:23.future certainly. The very impressive Martin Mathathi. This
:28:23. > :28:31.should be a great line-up. The last man to be introduced here is the
:28:31. > :28:35.man at won last year. He is defending his title. The very
:28:35. > :28:43.talented Titus Mbishei. The same principles apply for the women. A
:28:43. > :28:47.tough opening couple of kilometres. They will lead the masses away. I
:28:47. > :28:54.would expect the principles here to move swiftly away from the masses
:28:54. > :28:59.in the early stages of this race. This really is promising, isn't it?
:28:59. > :29:03.One of the races that I have looked forward to. You have two men here,
:29:03. > :29:12.Martin Mathathi and Titus Mbishei, absolutely on top of their game at
:29:12. > :29:16.the moment. Very much so. Martin Mathathi is another athlete that is
:29:16. > :29:20.doing well in Japan and they do not often get it wrong. The discipline
:29:20. > :29:27.of that marathon running nation is imbued in the air fleets and when
:29:27. > :29:34.they come and race they race really well. -- in the athletes. There are
:29:34. > :29:36.more world-class male athletes in this race than there were women.
:29:37. > :29:40.massive sense of personal achievement for these men and women
:29:40. > :29:46.that go out, training hard, reaching the goal of completing the
:29:46. > :29:53.training, and they will help others as well. Personal stopwatches are
:29:53. > :30:00.clicked, raising money for good causes. We promise that it might
:30:00. > :30:04.set off early and Titus Mbishei takes him on. We said it would be
:30:04. > :30:08.testing, an undulating course, which will sort them out. My
:30:08. > :30:18.goodness me, the two principles have decided it is time to sort
:30:18. > :30:32.
:30:32. > :30:38.of that field. This race is already beginning to emerge. The mental
:30:38. > :30:46.testing that is going on, even at this early stage. There is a little
:30:46. > :30:56.gap appearing. Mark Kenneally, of violent, it going well and leading
:30:56. > :31:16.
:31:16. > :31:22.significant. This is exactly what happened in the Great North Run.
:31:22. > :31:27.Once again, we have an interesting situation. The defending champion
:31:28. > :31:32.now finds himself in second place. You're looking at two athletes in
:31:32. > :31:41.supreme form. Martin Mathathi was filth in the world championships
:31:41. > :31:46.just five or six weeks ago -- 5th. He is a very experienced track
:31:46. > :31:50.racer. With that half marathon win in the Great North Run he knows he
:31:50. > :31:54.has a huge future in the marathon. He said to us last night that he
:31:54. > :31:59.wants to run the London Marathon after the Olympic Games. He wants
:31:59. > :32:05.to make that his debut. You're looking at two men who are amongst
:32:05. > :32:10.the top 45 in the world at 10,000 metres, both in very good shape. It
:32:10. > :32:18.is quite a British to see these two racing. There is a big gap behind
:32:18. > :32:27.them. We are at around 4.5 kilometres. They went through three
:32:27. > :32:37.kilometres in a 0.36, but locking that cap is growing quickly. -- in
:32:37. > :32:49.
:32:49. > :32:54.8.36, but I think that gap is moment. It is interesting, we were
:32:54. > :33:04.talking to Martin Mathathi, and his background is interesting, with his
:33:04. > :33:04.
:33:04. > :33:08.Japanese its coach. He is coached by a phone and we asked him whether
:33:08. > :33:13.he speech Japanese and he says he understands that bit of Japanese.
:33:13. > :33:19.Why would be interested to hear that conversation. They are in
:33:19. > :33:25.contact quite a lot and he has spent a lot of time, initiated with
:33:25. > :33:30.a scholarship in Japan. But once again, Titus Mbishei is not happy
:33:30. > :33:36.with staying behind. I wonder if this will become tactical and they
:33:36. > :33:42.will try to knock chance out of each other. Martin Mathathi there,
:33:42. > :33:50.in second place, as we approach half way, it is a massive talent.
:33:50. > :33:55.When he was 18 he ran 44.21 for 10 miles, one of the quickest time to
:33:55. > :34:03.ever recorded. He has plenty of strength to go with the speed.
:34:03. > :34:08.Titus Mbishei will be well aware of that. Titus Mbishei is in the
:34:09. > :34:13.Kenyan police force. He is, in effect, or state-sponsored. So many
:34:13. > :34:19.of the Kenyan athletes are in the army or the police force but they
:34:19. > :34:25.rarely, as I understand it, see a uniform. He is giving it a go here.
:34:25. > :34:31.You mentioned that passed his performance for 10 miles by a
:34:31. > :34:41.Martin Mathathi. I thought he stumbled a little bit there. The
:34:41. > :34:42.
:34:42. > :34:47.man to beat his record was highly Gebrselassie. It is about 10 metres
:34:47. > :34:51.between the defending champion and the challenger. We said the
:34:51. > :35:01.conditions underfoot are not very good but there is no wind, it is a
:35:01. > :35:03.
:35:03. > :35:12.lucky temperature. -- lovely. 14.22 at five kilometres, that threatens
:35:12. > :35:16.the course record. The second half is quicker. They have negotiated
:35:16. > :35:24.the major hill so far and away that these two were running so
:35:24. > :35:30.aggressively against each other might suggest something around 28
:35:30. > :35:39.minutes, perhaps. I think it half way they were on about 21.30 per
:35:39. > :35:44.with the negative split situation... I was just hesitating there,
:35:44. > :35:49.looking at Martin Mathathi coming right up on to the shoulder of
:35:49. > :35:59.Titus Mbishei again. They are putting pressure on themselves here.
:35:59. > :36:00.
:36:00. > :36:04.It is sapping their rhythm and energy. Titus Mbishei trains with
:36:04. > :36:11.the group of 20 athletes. Four of them run internationally and that
:36:11. > :36:20.funds the rest of the group. Martin Mathathi now at the front. They are
:36:20. > :36:24.chopping and changing. This is a good run from Tom Humphries. It is
:36:25. > :36:28.good to see because he was a wonderful junior athlete. Has not
:36:28. > :36:35.really come on in the last four or five years as one might have
:36:35. > :36:45.expected. He is moving well, there is a real power to his running. Is
:36:45. > :36:47.
:36:47. > :36:53.not back on his hips,. It is good to see Tom Humphries going well. If
:36:53. > :36:57.he can get his training ride this next winter, then there are big
:36:57. > :37:07.chunks to come off his time because clearly he is going into the winter
:37:07. > :37:12.in good shape. Still one, then the other. Martin Mathathi leading,
:37:12. > :37:17.Titus Mbishei in second place. Is this a little break attempt by
:37:17. > :37:21.Martin Mathathi? Titus Mbishei tried to get away and could not.
:37:21. > :37:25.This looks to be a little bit more positive. There is a little bit of
:37:25. > :37:31.a gap opening here. I wonder whether Martin Mathathi feels that
:37:31. > :37:35.this is the point of the race where he can get away. But Titus Mbishei
:37:35. > :37:45.is really working hard behind. He is really hurting now, with just
:37:45. > :37:47.
:37:47. > :37:56.three kilometres to go. This is a huge cap that we are getting to see
:37:56. > :38:00.here between the groups. I think Mark Kenneally is struggling a
:38:00. > :38:05.little bit here now. He ran aggressively to get away from some
:38:05. > :38:14.great runners. He is in 4th and then Tom Humphries is slightly
:38:14. > :38:19.ahead of him. This is the leading duo. It is going to come down to a
:38:19. > :38:25.sprint finish. You can take your pick on this. Both have got
:38:25. > :38:32.finishes. The distance runner says if you have got a downhill, make it
:38:32. > :38:36.count. Don't get to the hill and then relax. That is exactly what
:38:36. > :38:42.Martin Mathathi is doing and Titus Mbishei is responding. He comes up
:38:42. > :38:47.on to his inside and goes past. This is a very interesting race now
:38:47. > :38:54.with just two kilometres to go. Which of them will be able to break
:38:54. > :39:00.away again? There is a cameraman almost getting knocked over there.
:39:00. > :39:04.These two, absolutely flying. Titus Mbishei has taken the lead and
:39:04. > :39:10.Martin Mathathi in second place. First it is one and then the other,
:39:10. > :39:17.what a race! Titus Mbishei kept up at 6am every morning and does his
:39:17. > :39:25.main session of the day, 70 minutes every day at about 6am. Has he got
:39:25. > :39:28.the cap now? Martin Mathathi is the small of the two by quite a few
:39:28. > :39:33.inches and Titus Mbishei used the downhill to up his tempo a little
:39:33. > :39:38.bit. A hard training that this young man relishes every day back
:39:38. > :39:44.in Kenya is paying dividends. He is the defending champion and he is
:39:44. > :39:48.making a very strong attempt to retain the title. This is his final
:39:48. > :39:53.effort and has got Martin Mathathi got a finish to compare? At the
:39:53. > :40:01.moment it looks like a Fred could come away now. This is a
:40:01. > :40:09.significant break. And Titus Mbishei absolutely flying now,
:40:09. > :40:17.heading down to was the last 1000m. And this is the break and it has
:40:17. > :40:23.happened in the last 400m or so. know he is focused on this race.
:40:23. > :40:28.Last weekend he ran a low key 10 kilometres in Sicily. He was
:40:28. > :40:35.focusing very much on this Edinburgh race. He has not got it
:40:35. > :40:42.won yet because Martin Mathathi is coming back at him. I tell you what,
:40:42. > :40:48.he is closing the gap again! We have four or five metres and Martin
:40:48. > :40:57.Mathathi is not finished yet. Now what effect will that have on Titus
:40:57. > :41:02.Mbishei? Titus Mbishei hit it again. And that gap has not closed any
:41:02. > :41:10.more than it had before. But Martin Mathathi really looking stronger
:41:10. > :41:19.still. He is coming up again. What about that? A little grim as on the
:41:19. > :41:27.face of Martin Mathathi. Both of these men have run 26.59 for 10,000.
:41:27. > :41:32.I wonder if they read shot his bolt there. -- Titus Mbishei. One
:41:32. > :41:36.kilometre to go, it is going to be very close to the course record.
:41:36. > :41:42.They might well printed with the calibre of running their having to
:41:42. > :41:45.put down. I still have not return of Titus Mbishei but Martin
:41:45. > :41:49.Mathathi beginning to look strong. Titus Mbishei made a big effort to
:41:50. > :41:55.get away and could not do it and when Martin Mathathi came past him,
:41:55. > :42:05.he does look easy. There is not a lot given away in that facial
:42:05. > :42:12.
:42:12. > :42:17.expression. But the cap is now significant. -- the cap. -- gap.
:42:17. > :42:22.The relentless pressure of the come back from Martin Mathathi, much
:42:22. > :42:26.appreciated by the crowd along this route. This is a sensational run
:42:26. > :42:32.and it has been a great race, certainly one of the best I have
:42:32. > :42:38.seen for a long time on the roads. Tom Humphries still in third place.
:42:38. > :42:46.He has been closed in a little bit by Mark Kenneally. But this is a
:42:46. > :42:56.race of some consequence. It is not over, Titus Mbishei in the
:42:56. > :42:57.
:42:58. > :43:02.background is desperately trying to close their gap. It is probably 25
:43:02. > :43:08.metres. He needs to maintain this tempo, keep a little bit in reserve
:43:08. > :43:12.in case he is challenged on the sprint in. But I think he has got
:43:12. > :43:19.this one sorted despite the desperate attempt of Titus Mbishei
:43:19. > :43:27.to come back at him. Martin Mathathi, then, in the final stages
:43:27. > :43:34.of this wonderful 10km race. Titus Mbishei makes another effort, flat-
:43:34. > :43:40.champion in second place and the recent winner of the Great North
:43:40. > :43:45.Run is the man who is going to take this title. It really is a
:43:45. > :43:52.fantastic result. Only 30 metres or so to go and it is going to be
:43:52. > :43:59.Martin Mathathi. But looks to me as though that is going to be about 28
:43:59. > :44:04.minutes. Titus Mbishei in second place. It should be a course record.
:44:04. > :44:10.That was a great race, and I use that word adviser Italy. Tom
:44:10. > :44:17.Humphries will have done well if he can hold off Mark Kenneally of
:44:17. > :44:22.Ireland. Here are two principles of the utmost quality. Astonishing
:44:22. > :44:29.running through that second half. When they got the second half, just
:44:29. > :44:34.inside 14.30, they ran the second half in about 13.30. That is where
:44:34. > :44:41.we have seen the power and the quality of those Kenyan runners.
:44:41. > :44:46.That is astonishing, that second half. The time for Tom Humphries is
:44:46. > :44:51.could be very respectable. Mark Kenneally in 4th, but this is a
:44:51. > :44:57.great run for young Tom Humphries. This will take him into a new phase
:44:57. > :45:02.of his career. This is as good as I have seen Tom Humphries for a long
:45:02. > :45:12.time and he is going to come into third place. He has a little sprint
:45:12. > :45:24.
:45:24. > :45:34.left in him. With Mark Kenneally new course record. The first two
:45:34. > :45:35.
:45:36. > :45:44.were inside that record. women's race as well. Shout macro
:45:44. > :45:47.winning comfortably. -- Kabuu winning comfortably. Lovely run
:45:47. > :45:53.from Charlotte Purdue, the young Briton.
:45:53. > :46:03.Congratulations, you are the 2011 Great Edinburgh Run winner. How are
:46:03. > :46:06.you feeling? I am so happy. M so happy to be in this race.
:46:06. > :46:16.Definitely on form. Also the Great North Run winner this year. How
:46:16. > :46:17.
:46:17. > :46:21.does this raised compare? -- race. I said before I ran that I hoped it
:46:21. > :46:28.would be good and I am so happy today. Your first visit to
:46:28. > :46:31.Edinburgh. How did you find the city? It is very nice and very good.
:46:31. > :46:36.What is next on your schedule? ring back to Kenya but I will come
:46:36. > :46:41.back next year. -- I am going back to Kenya. I am very happy because
:46:41. > :46:44.this is my second race in the UK and I have won both. I am happy
:46:44. > :46:51.because of the organisation and the people that came to see me in this
:46:51. > :46:56.race. Thank you. How did you find Edinburgh? Very hilly? There are
:46:56. > :47:04.lots of holes and corners but it is interesting and I liked it. I hope
:47:04. > :47:14.to run next year, God winning. way you tactical next year? You are
:47:14. > :47:16.
:47:16. > :47:21.close to Mbishei all the way round and then you pull away. That is how
:47:21. > :47:26.I ran the race today. That was a great race. You must be really
:47:26. > :47:30.pleased. Yes, I am. It is my second one after injury so a good
:47:30. > :47:36.performance. The won the junior cross-country championship as well,
:47:36. > :47:40.so fantastic form right now. I won that in December. I am hoping to
:47:40. > :47:46.step up an age group this year and do well. What does it mean to be
:47:46. > :47:52.used to be the first British girl home? Today? I am really happy. I
:47:52. > :47:59.was aiming to be the first Briton. What are you planning? The European
:47:59. > :48:02.juniors, but after that? Next year, we have not talked about that, but
:48:02. > :48:07.we will go to Kenya for a month for altitude training which will be
:48:07. > :48:17.good. Can you beat the Kenyans? They are superimposed we definitely
:48:17. > :48:19.
:48:19. > :48:29.can. Paula Radcliffe has done it. - they reign supreme. We definitely
:48:29. > :48:32.can. Paula Radcliffe has done it. love coming to Edinburgh. It is an
:48:32. > :48:36.amazing city to race in and take in the scenery. My girlfriend has
:48:36. > :48:40.never been to Edinburgh before and she says she likes it. It is a
:48:40. > :48:48.beautiful city. I always do well in Edinburgh as well, since I was
:48:48. > :48:53.under 15 and I ran a UK Challenge race. I thought this was just the
:48:53. > :48:58.place to race. How are you feeling after that, Andrew? Really good. To
:48:58. > :49:02.get inside 30 minutes for that course in my first year back
:49:02. > :49:11.training is really good. To know my body is in the right place going
:49:11. > :49:15.into marathon training. I struggled. It was spurred that it came down to
:49:15. > :49:19.the sprint. -- it was good. elite runners have come back, but
:49:19. > :49:29.there are still thousands out there, all of them champions in their own
:49:29. > :49:38.
:49:38. > :49:48.outfit might be see-through. But people are fantastic, cheering me
:49:48. > :49:54.
:49:54. > :50:04.on. There has never been a better runners. What inspires you to come
:50:04. > :50:11.out every week? I don't want to be a grumpy old man. Great answer!
:50:11. > :50:21.want to keep fit. What age are you, if you don't mind me asking? I am
:50:21. > :50:34.
:50:34. > :50:39.83. Congratulations. That is superb. running for Help for Heroes.
:50:39. > :50:45.Waiting for anyone else? Another two. They should be here shortly.
:50:45. > :50:51.Where are they? They are also they are slacking! You are the young and
:50:51. > :50:58.fit ones? That is right. We all trained together down South and
:50:58. > :51:04.then come up for the weekend. you run in Edinburgh before? I have
:51:04. > :51:14.never been. The other two could be lost on the course some why? Could
:51:14. > :51:23.
:51:23. > :51:27.the runaway Bride at the event last year. Because the dates have
:51:27. > :51:32.changed it is not quite your anniversary. How are you doing?
:51:32. > :51:36.am doing fine. I had another six months to train this year because
:51:36. > :51:40.it is six months later. And I have run faster because last year I had
:51:40. > :51:44.to organise the wedding. Looking back I do not know how I did it
:51:44. > :51:50.because I was so tired. We did think you were crazy. Where is your
:51:50. > :51:55.husband? Since he got the wedding ring on his finger, he threw out
:51:55. > :52:00.the running shoes! For those that were not confident of taking on the
:52:00. > :52:04.full distance today, we saw the first ever five kilometres Great
:52:04. > :52:13.Edinburgh Run. 500 runners took to the roads over that shorter
:52:13. > :52:18.distance today. Michael Hutton finished in 18 minutes. Maybe next
:52:18. > :52:21.year they will fancy their chances over the longer distance. For many
:52:21. > :52:28.of the runners it was their first attempt at a mass petition patient
:52:28. > :52:32.run. And one man was chasing a world record, amazingly. And that
:52:33. > :52:39.was a double amputee and organ transplant recipient.
:52:39. > :52:43.We have some of competitors here. You have a very interesting story.
:52:43. > :52:53.You are the only double amputee and major organ transplant runner in
:52:53. > :52:56.the world. The at his right. -- that is right. And you are taking
:52:56. > :53:04.part in the race to raise awareness for organ transplant. That is
:53:04. > :53:09.correct. I was very lucky to receive my kidney transplant in May,
:53:09. > :53:14.2009. It was through the unfortunate death of a 40 year-old
:53:14. > :53:24.man, which gave me a second chance of life, which I am grabbing with
:53:24. > :53:24.
:53:24. > :53:29.both hands. The Edinburgh Royal Infirmary transplant co-ordinator
:53:29. > :53:35.and the surgeon really saved my life. As well as the organ donor. I
:53:35. > :53:39.just have not looked back. Amazing story. Laura, really inspirational
:53:39. > :53:44.for you, too. He actually inspired me to train for the marathon last
:53:44. > :53:51.year and I would not have done that without his advice. And what is
:53:51. > :53:57.next on the agenda for you in terms of your next race? Probably five
:53:57. > :54:02.kilometres. I am in the process of trying to get better lungs so I can
:54:02. > :54:08.run instead of walking. Until then I will stick to five kilometres,
:54:08. > :54:15.maybe the occasional 10 kilometres, but that will be difficult. That
:54:15. > :54:19.would be more testing. Another hardy soul, Vanessa Jacob.
:54:19. > :54:24.Last week she took part in the Great Scotland swim, which is
:54:24. > :54:28.around the Strathclyde Country Park. Swimming one weekend and running
:54:28. > :54:34.the next. You are running for the Stroke
:54:34. > :54:40.Association but you have had a busy schedule. In June I started doing a
:54:40. > :54:45.triathlon, and in July I did half the Iron man which nearly killed me.
:54:45. > :54:50.And a couple of weeks ago I did the Dublin half marathon. Last week was
:54:50. > :54:54.the swimming in Glasgow. And this week I hope I will do this run and
:54:54. > :54:59.then the London Marathon in April. Your colleague was your inspiration.
:54:59. > :55:04.She passed away suddenly last December when she was only 46. It
:55:04. > :55:10.was a shock to us all in the office. We heard she had had a stroke and
:55:10. > :55:13.did not recover. I have always been into fitness and running, so I
:55:13. > :55:18.decided to do something different and do all of this for Linda. It
:55:18. > :55:24.has been really good and I have raised 3,000 already. It has been
:55:24. > :55:30.well worth it. Well done. And very quickly, the swimming, that is new
:55:30. > :55:35.for you? I only learnt to swim 18 months ago so last week was not my
:55:35. > :55:39.finest moment. I am very lucky because a friend of mine stuck with
:55:39. > :55:45.me the whole way and helped me get round. If somebody could have
:55:45. > :55:52.pulled me out after 100 metres, I would have let them! Today is more
:55:52. > :55:57.my strength. You are an inspiration. Thank you for speaking to us.
:55:57. > :56:02.Watching over events, David. A fantastic race, as we thought. The
:56:02. > :56:06.Kenny is dominated but some good British performances. That is right.
:56:06. > :56:14.-- Kenya dominated. A good performance by the British
:56:14. > :56:19.competitors. It is almost sunny now. There are some great races in lousy
:56:19. > :56:26.conditions. We saw the domination of Kenya. We are also seeing the
:56:26. > :56:34.future of British running with Charlotte part due in particular. -
:56:34. > :56:39.- Charlotte Purdue. Yes, she was the first European to finish last
:56:39. > :56:44.year and then she had a knee operation and then she came back
:56:44. > :56:49.and she beat Irene Jerotich. That is really good. Charlotte is tough,
:56:49. > :56:52.she is hard, 20, with all her career to look forward to. She will
:56:52. > :56:57.go into the preparations for 2012 excited about what she achieved
:56:57. > :57:03.today. Tom Humphries, podium finish for him. He says he loves running
:57:03. > :57:06.in Edinburgh. He is like Charlotte. We saw him as a junior cross-
:57:06. > :57:14.country runner a few years ago. He kind of struggle to do the
:57:14. > :57:19.transition. Today he broke 30 minutes. Only one minute behind the
:57:19. > :57:23.Kenyans. He looked really comfortable. For the British
:57:23. > :57:26.athletes it is important. For the young people that want to mix with
:57:26. > :57:29.the best in the world and gain the confidence that they can be up
:57:29. > :57:34.there with them, the likes of Mo Farah and Chris Thompson, so they
:57:34. > :57:39.can beat them in the future on the track. The Andrew Lemoncello, his
:57:39. > :57:44.first race back for five weeks, not great for him but he seems quite
:57:44. > :57:51.happy. For Andrew it is about rebuilding confidence. He was a
:57:51. > :57:55.great steeplechase and competed in the Beijing Olympics. He is going
:57:55. > :57:57.into the marathon. He knows he has to get a couple of minutes faster
:57:57. > :58:02.to guarantee selection for London but there is no reason why he
:58:02. > :58:05.cannot. I think he has the brain and determination to be a good
:58:05. > :58:10.marathon runner. He needs a clear period of hard training. He needs
:58:10. > :58:13.to choose the marathon he needs to do to get selection. It will be
:58:13. > :58:18.great for Scotland to have him competing at the Olympic Games in
