:00:16. > :00:21.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE It's July the 27th in exactly 12
:00:21. > :00:25.months today, the eyes of the world will be on London. So let's
:00:25. > :00:29.celebrate the fact that for the first time in over 60 years, the
:00:29. > :00:39.Olympic Games is returning to British soil, and after tonight,
:00:39. > :00:48.
:00:48. > :00:58.The Games of the 30th Olympiad are awarded to London.
:00:58. > :01:18.
:01:18. > :01:21.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Good evening, and welcome to a very
:01:21. > :01:26.special event to celebrate a landmark occasion. We are live with
:01:26. > :01:32.a few friends of ours in Trafalgar Square in the heart of central
:01:32. > :01:36.London. This is where thousands of people came back in 2005 to
:01:36. > :01:40.celebrate when London won its bid to host the Olympics. So we thought
:01:40. > :01:44.it would be a good idea to return six years later, and tonight all
:01:44. > :01:49.eyes will be on that countdown clock in the middle of Trafalgar
:01:49. > :01:52.Square as it ticks past the very second that signifies there is just
:01:52. > :01:57.a year until the Olympic Games. there are millions of people around
:01:57. > :02:01.the world watching us live tonight from Sydney to Rio, Beijing to
:02:01. > :02:04.Athens. It's lovely to share the event with all of you. Also,
:02:04. > :02:08.tonight is incredibly significant because this evening on this very
:02:08. > :02:12.stage, the President of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, will invite the
:02:12. > :02:16.athletes from around the world to come to this city to compete for an
:02:16. > :02:20.Olympic medal. We're going to see for the first time Olympic's 2012
:02:20. > :02:23.Olympic medals. The Princess Royal will be here to unveil them. It's a
:02:23. > :02:26.big night indeed, but it's only right we share this evening with
:02:27. > :02:30.the Olympic Park, which as you can see now, is about five miles in
:02:30. > :02:34.that direction. Now, remarkably, Sophie, it took them a full two
:02:34. > :02:38.weeks to fill the Olympic pool, but it's full. It's ready for action
:02:38. > :02:41.and tonight will host its first race, but we're not expecting any
:02:41. > :02:45.Olympic records. No. It's going to be interesting. But doesn't it look
:02:45. > :02:52.fantastic? There it is, the Aquatics Centre. Let's go straight
:02:52. > :02:54.to the diving pool. And there is only one man I can think of who
:02:54. > :03:03.should Kristen that. Mishal Hussain is there with him now.
:03:03. > :03:07.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE If you know anything at all about
:03:07. > :03:11.British diving, you will guess what is coming next. Welcome to the
:03:11. > :03:16.Aquatics Centre, a state-of-the-art facility just completed, and with
:03:16. > :03:24.me here is one of Britain's big medal hopes for 2012, Tom Daley.
:03:25. > :03:28.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Lots and lots of support for you,
:03:28. > :03:31.Tom, not surprisingly, here tonight. You have a look around the Aquatics
:03:31. > :03:35.Centre. What do you think of what you've seen? Well, the pool just
:03:35. > :03:39.looks absolutely incredible, and to think of what it's going to be like
:03:39. > :03:43.in a year's time - these gries making a lot of noise, and to think
:03:43. > :03:47.what it's going to be like when it's packed out - probably going to
:03:47. > :03:51.need new ears by the time the next year comes around. Does it feel
:03:51. > :03:56.different preparing for an Olympics on home turf? Yeah, well, every
:03:56. > :03:59.athlete's dream is to compete at an Olympic Games, and to get the
:03:59. > :04:02.opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd never comes around
:04:02. > :04:05.very often, so it's going to be completely different to the last
:04:05. > :04:08.Olympic, because you're going to have the home crowd support. I am
:04:08. > :04:12.sure everyone here is going to get behind all the athletes and divers
:04:12. > :04:16.in Great Britain. And you get to be the very first person to perform
:04:16. > :04:21.the first official dive into this Olympic diving pool. How does that
:04:21. > :04:25.feel? Yeah. I'm quite nervous and excited at the same time because
:04:25. > :04:30.it's going to be the first dive and yeah, I'm going to go out there,
:04:30. > :04:34.give it my best shot. Hopefully it will be a good dive. Which will we
:04:34. > :04:38.see? A somersault Pike, which is one of the dives I'll be using in
:04:38. > :04:43.the Olympics in the sinkro competition with my partner. We're
:04:43. > :04:48.with you all the way. The platforms are ready. Good luck. Tom Daley.
:04:48. > :04:53.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE And to talk us through what Tom is
:04:53. > :04:58.going to do, over now to the former British Olympic diving silver
:04:58. > :05:03.medallist Leon Taylor. OK. Here goes Tom. What an honour
:05:03. > :05:08.this is. Look how shiny those bars are. Everyone has been out today
:05:08. > :05:18.polishing away. This pool is brand spanking new, and what an honour
:05:18. > :05:21.
:05:21. > :05:26.for Tom Daley to kris christen it. You can hear the crowd here in this
:05:26. > :05:31.Aquatics Centre. It's almost like a helicopter diving pad, the board is
:05:31. > :05:41.helicopter diving pad, the board is so big. Look how amazing this pool
:05:41. > :05:46.
:05:46. > :05:55.background. Four, three, two, one. And as you would expect from Tom
:05:55. > :06:01.Daley, just back from Shanghai, chistens the Olympic pool with that
:06:01. > :06:08.dive. He swims to the side there. What an amazing occasion. Let's
:06:08. > :06:15.have another look at the dive, the first dive at the 2012 Aquatics
:06:15. > :06:21.Centre, an inward somersault pike. The pool is something else. As Tom
:06:21. > :06:25.was saying, he's so excited to dive here in just a year's time. Super
:06:25. > :06:28.slow motion as he goes into the water there without a splash. What
:06:28. > :06:32.a fitting opening to the first dive of the Aquatics Centre. Tom,
:06:32. > :06:37.congratulations. It looked fantastic to me. How does the
:06:37. > :06:40.diving pool feel? It was great. It was a little bit cold getting in
:06:40. > :06:44.initially, but yeah, it's great to think that that's what it's going
:06:44. > :06:47.to be like next year - it's just incredible. The atmosphere then was
:06:47. > :06:52.great, the amount of cheers and stuff. So it's going to be awesome
:06:52. > :06:58.next year. You said that particular dive is one we'll see more of next
:06:58. > :07:01.year? Yes, one in the synchronised competition I'll hopefully qualify
:07:01. > :07:05.for. You'll have to look out for that one. What's the next year
:07:05. > :07:09.going to be like for you? Quite busy. I have my A-Levels. I've got
:07:09. > :07:13.obviously lots of training to do as well. I've just got to keep
:07:13. > :07:17.training, keep focusing on the job at hand, and hopefully the whole
:07:17. > :07:20.country will be supporting the GB athletes into it. People are
:07:20. > :07:23.intrigued because you're only 17. How do you manage to combine
:07:23. > :07:27.training at this level with your school work? It is quite difficult
:07:27. > :07:30.to combine the two at the same time, but you just have to manage your
:07:31. > :07:34.time as well as you possibly can, be, like, strict with yourself and
:07:34. > :07:37.make sure that you're constantly training as hard as you can,
:07:37. > :07:41.working as hard as you can and making sure that all the support
:07:41. > :07:44.systems around you, like your family, your friends and all the
:07:44. > :07:48.people from British diving, that they're supporting you constantly.
:07:49. > :07:52.Tom, thank you so much for doing that first official dive. Good luck
:07:52. > :08:02.for next year and for the Games themselves. Tom Daley.
:08:02. > :08:07.
:08:07. > :08:12.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE So the diving pool has officially
:08:12. > :08:16.been christened. We'll have more from you from the Aquatics Centre
:08:17. > :08:19.where we'll be putting the pool to the test with help from some
:08:19. > :08:22.familiar faces. Thank you very much indeed. You enjoyed that here in
:08:22. > :08:27.Trafalgar Square, didn't you? That was a special moment and a special
:08:27. > :08:30.moment for Tom as well. Something tells me he might be raising the
:08:30. > :08:34.famous roof of that place in 12 months' time. A very special moment
:08:34. > :08:39.has arrived. It's time to invite the athletes to come to London to
:08:40. > :08:42.compete in the Olympic Games in 12 months' time. So please welcome to
:08:42. > :08:52.the stage delegates from the International Olympic Committee
:08:52. > :09:08.
:09:08. > :09:14.along with the Prime Minister, From the host nations past, present
:09:14. > :09:19.and future - leading the way, Greece, the birthplace of the
:09:19. > :09:25.Olympic Games, and joining these representatives on stage, gymnasts
:09:25. > :09:30.from Bromley Valley Gymnastics Centre in London, the youngest,
:09:30. > :09:35.just seven years old. Brazil - they'll host the 2018 summer
:09:35. > :09:40.Olympics. China is here too. They staged the last Olympics in Beijing,
:09:40. > :09:45.of course, in 2008. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:09:45. > :09:50.And the Winter Olympics represented as well. South Korea - they'll host
:09:50. > :09:56.the 2018 Winter Olympics and Russia as well, hosting the 2014 Winter
:09:56. > :10:01.Olympics. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:10:01. > :10:04.And following them on to the stage, we have the President of the
:10:04. > :10:09.International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, who is here to
:10:09. > :10:13.invite the youth of the world to take part in the Olympic Games, and
:10:13. > :10:16.Lord Coe there, who has driven London's Games so passionately
:10:16. > :10:24.almost from the start, the Princess Royal and, of course, the Prime
:10:24. > :10:29.Minister, David Cameron. It gives me huge pleasure to
:10:29. > :10:34.welcome everyone here in Trafalgar Square. This is a great night for
:10:34. > :10:40.London, a great night for Britain. It was six years ago in this Square
:10:40. > :10:45.that we heard the news that Britain would have the opportunity to host
:10:45. > :10:49.the Olympic Games, and six years on, with just one year to go, the sense
:10:49. > :10:56.of excitement is even greater today than it was then, and I think this
:10:56. > :11:01.has the makings of a great British success story. With a year to go,
:11:01. > :11:04.it's on time. It's on budget. The great stadium is finished. The
:11:04. > :11:08.Aquatics Centre is finished. The Velodrome is finished, and I
:11:08. > :11:13.believe this can be a great advertisement for our country, and
:11:13. > :11:18.we must remember what London 2012 is all about. It's about great
:11:18. > :11:22.sport with great British athletes like Tom Daley and Chris Hoy taking
:11:22. > :11:28.part. It's about a great legacy, not just sport for a few weeks, but
:11:28. > :11:31.a sporting legacy for all our country for many, many years, and
:11:31. > :11:36.it's about Great Britain letting the whole world see all that is
:11:36. > :11:40.great about our country, our history, our present, our future,
:11:40. > :11:48.the brilliance of our arts, the depth of our culture, the fantastic
:11:48. > :11:51.success of our business, so we must offer the greatest ever Games in
:11:51. > :11:56.the world's greatest country. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:11:56. > :12:01.And with that - APPLAUSE
:12:01. > :12:04.And with that, will you give a great, warm London welcome to the
:12:04. > :12:14.President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge.
:12:14. > :12:23.
:12:23. > :12:32.Good evening. On 6th, July 2005, a dream was born when the
:12:32. > :12:39.International Olympic Committee awarded the 2012 Games to London.
:12:39. > :12:45.The world's finest athletes began dreaming of competing in this
:12:45. > :12:49.magnificent city in packed state- of-the-art venues and in front of
:12:49. > :12:54.passionate crowds, as in 1908 and 1948, they knew they would be
:12:54. > :13:02.coming to the nation that invented modern sport and the concept of
:13:02. > :13:07.fair play. Today, their dreams come closer as we invite 202 National
:13:07. > :13:14.Olympic Committees to the 2012 Games. The athletes will be ready,
:13:14. > :13:19.and so will London. For this, the International Olympic Committee
:13:19. > :13:23.thanks the very supportive public authorities, the great Locog team
:13:23. > :13:30.under the leadership of Lord Coe and the British public for its
:13:30. > :13:39.enthusiasm. APPLAUSE
:13:39. > :13:43.I now according to tradition - I invite the athletes of the world to
:13:43. > :13:53.participate in the Games of the 30th Olympiad in London one year
:13:53. > :14:02.
:14:02. > :14:07.from today. Good luck, London. And now, the President of the IOC
:14:07. > :14:14.will ask the representatives of the six national Olympic Committees
:14:14. > :14:24.represented here today to accept this invitation on behalf of their
:14:24. > :14:28.
:14:28. > :14:37.country's athletes. Accepting on behalf of the Hellenic
:14:37. > :14:46.Olympic Committee, Cpyros Kapelos. On behalf of the Brazilian Olympic
:14:46. > :14:52.Committee, Carlos Nuzman. APPLAUSE
:14:52. > :15:01.On behalf of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Yu Peng.
:15:01. > :15:08.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE On behalf of the Korean Olympic
:15:08. > :15:16.Committee, Yang Chung Park. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:15:16. > :15:23.On behalf of the Russian Olympic Committee, Ahmed Villalov.
:15:23. > :15:33.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE On behalf of the British Olympic
:15:33. > :15:43.
:15:43. > :15:48.We wish all the athletes good luck when they prepare for London 2012,
:15:48. > :15:58.and look forward to seeing them here in one year's time.
:15:58. > :15:58.
:15:58. > :17:25.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds
:17:25. > :17:29.And # London calling. To the Now, as The Feeling get ready to
:17:29. > :17:36.perform to this huge crowd in Trafalgar Square, a glimpse of the
:17:36. > :17:41.people down below, enjoying this wonderful moment, as London
:17:41. > :17:45.countdown to the 2012 Olympics. Importantly, we've now reached the
:17:45. > :17:50.stage where Jacques Rogge has invited the world's athletes to now
:17:50. > :18:00.come to London. You saw the celebrations, now it is time to
:18:00. > :18:11.
:18:11. > :18:16.# I. # I wish I could swim.
:18:16. > :18:26.# Like the dolphins. # Like dolphins can swim.
:18:26. > :18:36.
:18:36. > :18:43.# and nothing. We are joined by Chris Tomlinson,
:18:43. > :18:53.who competed in Beijing 2008. Next up, Martin Barnard, Britain's
:18:53. > :18:55.
:18:55. > :19:05.number one high jumper, and there Andy Tennant, the track and road
:19:05. > :19:06.
:19:06. > :19:10.cyclist, who won a silver and bronze in a team pursuit.
:19:10. > :19:19.We are also joined this evening by Andy Turner, Christian Malcolm, Sam
:19:19. > :19:27.Oldham, Beth Tweddle and Ben Kelly Holmes, who won two gold medals an
:19:27. > :19:34.incredible seven years ago at the # We can beat them.
:19:34. > :19:44.# For ever and ever. # Oh we can be heroes.
:19:44. > :19:49.
:19:49. > :19:54.# Just for one day. Sing it with me, come on London!
:19:55. > :20:03.# We can be heroes, just for one day.
:20:03. > :20:13.# Let me hear you. We can be heroes. # Just for one day.
:20:13. > :20:36.
:20:37. > :20:41.# We can be heroes. A huge thank you to The Feeling and
:20:41. > :20:45.the DJ, Kissy Sell Out, and wonderful to see so many of our
:20:45. > :20:49.artists -- athletes here in Trafalgar Square. Welcome to the
:20:49. > :20:53.celebrations. 12 months ago, this man was cycling
:20:53. > :20:57.around the Velodrome on the Olympic Park with Sir Chris Hoy. Nothing as
:20:57. > :21:07.strenuous this evening but something equally as important.
:21:07. > :21:11.
:21:11. > :21:21.Please welcome, the Mayor of London, # London Calling.
:21:21. > :21:22.
:21:22. > :21:26.Your Royal Highness, Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, we have a new
:21:26. > :21:31.monument in this city to the indomitability of London. A symbol
:21:31. > :21:36.of resilience, to go with Nelson's Column, or the dome of St Paul's
:21:36. > :21:46.rising above the smoke of the Blitz. My friends, I give you the Olympic
:21:46. > :21:52.No sooner had this masterpiece of the Swiss art been installed than
:21:52. > :21:57.it unexpectedly packed up. But with the help of various Swiss
:21:57. > :22:01.chronometer us, we got it going again. And then it was attacked by
:22:01. > :22:08.a horde of wooded crusties protesting at something or other,
:22:08. > :22:14.and still that clock ticks on, to remind its that nothing, and no one,
:22:14. > :22:20.is going to stop us in our work of preparing London for the greatest
:22:20. > :22:28.event that has taken place in this city in the last 50 years. Mr
:22:28. > :22:31.President Jacques Rogge, the streets will be ready, won't they?
:22:31. > :22:37.The trains will be ready, the taxes will be ready, the theatres will be
:22:37. > :22:44.ready, the buses will be ready, complete with the new upon, hop off
:22:44. > :22:50.feature. The hotels will be ready, the bicycles will be ready, the
:22:50. > :22:54.Olympic venues are already so ready, that we might as well call a snap
:22:54. > :22:57.Olympics tomorrow and catch the rest of the world napping. And
:22:57. > :23:06.above all, the people of London will be ready.
:23:07. > :23:14.To welcome the world's finest athletes to the greatest games that
:23:14. > :23:24.have ever been held, in the greatest city on earth. See you in
:23:24. > :23:26.
:23:26. > :23:30.Boris, thank you. We can take it from that that London will most
:23:30. > :23:35.definitely be ready. That ends the formal part of the evening, but it
:23:35. > :23:40.doesn't mean we are finished. There is plenty to come. We are going to
:23:40. > :23:44.see very shortly for the first time, those medals, the London 2012
:23:44. > :23:48.Olympic medals that so many of these athletes will be desperate to
:23:48. > :23:58.get their hands on next year. first, let's go back to the Olympic
:23:58. > :24:05.
:24:05. > :24:10.Park. It is time again to make some Aquatics Centre. We are going to
:24:10. > :24:15.celebrate one year to go, with the very first competitive race ever to
:24:15. > :24:19.take place in the Olympic pool. Who better to take part than those who
:24:19. > :24:25.know exactly what it is like to compete for Britain at an Olympic
:24:25. > :24:29.double? To introduce our swimmers, over to Britain's Sydney 2000
:24:29. > :24:35.triple-jump gold medallist, Jonathan Edwards. Thank you. This
:24:35. > :24:38.venue is going to see some amazing races in a year time. I don't think
:24:38. > :24:42.it is going to see anything quite like what we are about to witness.
:24:42. > :24:46.Some of our greatest Olympians, in a way you have never seen them
:24:46. > :24:56.before. I have the starters hooter to begin the race, let me introduce
:24:56. > :24:57.
:24:57. > :25:07.you are going to see. In lane one, please welcome, Roger Black.
:25:07. > :25:07.
:25:07. > :26:42.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 87 seconds
:26:42. > :26:45.next lane. not as good as we saw from Tom
:26:45. > :26:50.Daley. Jamie Baulch at the top of the screen is keeping up with Mark
:26:50. > :26:56.Foster. That is the underwater shot of Mark Foster. Let's see what is
:26:56. > :27:01.happening, Duncan Goodhew swimming breaststroke. We have a battle for
:27:01. > :27:06.second. Roger Black, Steve Backley, Jamie Baulch in a line. Who is
:27:06. > :27:11.going to get it? We need a photo- finish, who knows who came in
:27:11. > :27:14.second? The rest of the swimmers come in, what an occasion. There is
:27:14. > :27:21.no one in lane eight at the moment, Tessa Sanderson is only halfway
:27:21. > :27:27.down the poor. The crowd are loving it, there she is. The crowd are on
:27:27. > :27:34.their feet. She is almost there. The rest of the athletes are
:27:34. > :27:37.hauling themselves out, Tessa is still stroking away. Famous for
