:00:18. > :00:25.The final stop on the wheelchair tennis circuit is RGB the most

:00:26. > :00:28.important. The world's top eight men, top eight when an art here at

:00:29. > :00:31.the Wheelchair Tennis Masters. It is a competition only for the best of

:00:32. > :00:39.the best and Britain have six of those competing here this week. Look

:00:40. > :00:44.at backroad on Henman Hill, everyone waving, fabulous exposure for

:00:45. > :00:53.wheelchair tennis. The state of British tennis at the moment, it's

:00:54. > :00:57.going from strength to strength. We've got players exceeding in all

:00:58. > :01:01.the divisions, we've just come home from the most successful Paralympics

:01:02. > :01:09.that we've ever had in wheelchair tennis. Steyn Gordon is going to the

:01:10. > :01:13.end of your number world one to make history, Alfie Hewitt is coming up

:01:14. > :01:22.the game real quick. He's deftly going to be someone to look out for.

:01:23. > :01:25.It's just amazing to see. Steyn cauliflower can keep that going and

:01:26. > :01:32.bring through as much new talent as possible. It's good to see British

:01:33. > :01:41.tennis with top players. It's exciting times ahead. I'm here with

:01:42. > :01:44.Lucy Shuker, double Paralympic medallist and understand of all

:01:45. > :01:50.things wheelchair tennis. However you? Very well thanks. There's

:01:51. > :01:55.competition in particular, the Masters, how big a competition is

:01:56. > :02:00.this? After Brazil, it's got to be the top tournament of the year. We

:02:01. > :02:03.are here to try and take that end of year singles title, the doubles one

:02:04. > :02:09.just happened a few weeks ago out in California, this is the end of years

:02:10. > :02:13.single one. The men's, women's and the quads. Can you explain to us

:02:14. > :02:20.what the quad division means? The quad division is done on... Four

:02:21. > :02:23.players moving on three or more limbs. It's done on a points

:02:24. > :02:29.classification system is there is points for the racket hand,

:02:30. > :02:33.non-racket hand. Looking at the men's, you've got Gordon Reid in

:02:34. > :02:38.there, a big name, done a lot this last 12 months. What's he going to

:02:39. > :02:45.be expecting from this competition? We all know that Stephan and Gordon

:02:46. > :02:49.are two players fighting for their end of your number world one spot.

:02:50. > :02:54.It's very similar to the ATP tennis finals with Murray and Djokovic in

:02:55. > :02:59.the setup and the way they're going to be meeting. Whoever wins out of

:03:00. > :03:02.Stephan and Gordon, the going to be the end of year world number one

:03:03. > :03:07.survey will be fighting for that spot. This is what Gordon Reid had

:03:08. > :03:15.to say when I caught up with him. Are used to play tennis before I was

:03:16. > :03:20.in hospital and in my condition. It was a really important part of my

:03:21. > :03:25.rehab and by recovery. It was really important and helped me deal with

:03:26. > :03:32.having a disability and sports give me the outlet that should America

:03:33. > :03:36.get my life back again and showed me that it's not the end of the world.

:03:37. > :03:42.You always have doubts and worries that you're never going to win a

:03:43. > :03:47.Grand Slam, I got my first final in a Grand Slam in Australia. I won

:03:48. > :03:50.that. I was 24 and I'd done that. That was one thing I could kick off

:03:51. > :03:54.the list and that was pressure away from me straightaway. That gave me

:03:55. > :04:03.the freedom to go to Wimbledon and reach the final there, enjoy

:04:04. > :04:09.fulfilling my tail to dream of playing singles there. He's got it!

:04:10. > :04:16.Look at what it means to them. The first ever Wimbledon singles

:04:17. > :04:21.champion, Scotland's Gordon Reid. Steyn winning silver with Alfie in

:04:22. > :04:26.doubles. It was unbelievable. Still can't believe it happened. How do

:04:27. > :04:33.you deal with the pressure of knowing that there is people looking

:04:34. > :04:39.at you as inspiration? I don't really see that as a pressure, I see

:04:40. > :04:46.that as an honour almost. If I can inspire one kid who's feeling a

:04:47. > :04:50.similar way to me to come and try tennis, comically might not play

:04:51. > :04:53.professionally, they might not play internationally, but if the sport

:04:54. > :05:00.can give them what it gave to me on any level, then that's worth just as

:05:01. > :05:03.much as any title and to me. We're really lucky to have the single

:05:04. > :05:08.Masters here for the last three years, everybody wants to win it. I

:05:09. > :05:12.love playing in front of my home crowd and hopefully the standard is

:05:13. > :05:20.high and we can showcase the sport to new people. Gordon was unbeaten

:05:21. > :05:26.in the group stages but faced Stephane Houdet in the semifinal.

:05:27. > :05:35.The winner also ended up the world number one. Gordon Reid know has a

:05:36. > :05:44.chance to close this match out. Quicker than we had into debated.

:05:45. > :05:48.5-1, one game away from reaching the final. Becoming the world number one

:05:49. > :06:18.for the second time this year. The match we thought we'd see in the

:06:19. > :06:22.final, Houdet lost in the previous round, Gordon didn't. That's why

:06:23. > :06:24.we've got this match in the semi, world number one against world

:06:25. > :07:06.number two which will be reversed very soon. Double fault.

:07:07. > :07:14.Not going to get that one back. That was great defence by Gardiner. Right

:07:15. > :07:21.in the back of the court, Phil Reach and then he got a short ball from

:07:22. > :07:33.Houdet and even with Houdet's strength, with that. She didn't get

:07:34. > :07:45.it. Patients. Signature shot by Gordon. Reverse backhand, lovely.

:07:46. > :07:46.Smashed it. We are around the hour mark and two match points for Gordon

:07:47. > :08:22.Reid. Ultimately, that will be his last

:08:23. > :08:27.shot. Gordon Reid, once again, blamed his position as being the

:08:28. > :08:34.world number one in wheelchair tennis. A comprehensive victory as

:08:35. > :08:41.the world number one as he must be called now. 6-2, 6-1, and

:08:42. > :08:47.obliteration by Gordon Reed of Stephane Houdet today. A fantastic

:08:48. > :08:52.result there for Gordon Reid, number one and through to the final. Also

:08:53. > :09:00.hoping to make the final of the quad division is Andy Lapthorne. I spoke

:09:01. > :09:04.to him earlier in the competition. Is it fair to say you're an

:09:05. > :09:08.emotional player, good and bad, you wear your heart on your sleeve? If

:09:09. > :09:12.you watch Andy Murray on TV, a lot of people compare me to some of his

:09:13. > :09:16.reactions. When you're in that moment, you don't realise what

:09:17. > :09:21.you're doing, I don't anyway. Sometimes I do cringe but it means

:09:22. > :09:27.so much to me. Your first big result after being classified in the quad

:09:28. > :09:34.in 2008, you won the doubles with Pete Norfolk in 2012. We were the

:09:35. > :09:39.number one team in the world, we had beaten everyone, it was a bit of a

:09:40. > :09:42.disappointment. If you look at the pictures of me on the podium, I was

:09:43. > :09:51.crying because we should have won that. No disrespect anybody that was

:09:52. > :09:55.there. Two years later, at your first US slam singles, what was that

:09:56. > :10:00.like going from winning in the doubles to a big win on your own?

:10:01. > :10:07.That was special to go there in America, New York, please would you

:10:08. > :10:10.love so much, going there as in number three seed and then managing

:10:11. > :10:16.to the American number one in the final, which was perfect. 2012,

:10:17. > :10:21.winning doubles, 24 team, winning singles, then Brazil, you got both,

:10:22. > :10:27.to go out and make the final of the singles. That was a crazy match

:10:28. > :10:33.against David. He had a winning record over me, it was amazing. To

:10:34. > :10:37.win that bronze in doubles after four hours and 25 minutes, the

:10:38. > :10:42.longest match in Paralympic history in any sport, I've been told, was

:10:43. > :10:47.extra special. Tell me a little bit about the competition that here.

:10:48. > :10:52.This is the end of year tour finals, our version of the able bodied

:10:53. > :10:55.event, all the best players are here. This is the one that everyone

:10:56. > :11:00.wants to win the end of the year, the big title, for me it's a very

:11:01. > :11:06.special one taking Place in used London. I will be looking to try and

:11:07. > :11:10.take on the title. With one Brit in the men's final, could Andy make it

:11:11. > :11:22.to bike taking his place in the quad final? COMMENTATOR: Catie Munnings

:11:23. > :11:30.never been in this position before. -- never been in this position

:11:31. > :11:37.before. Here he is in completely uncharted territory, 5-4 in the

:11:38. > :11:49.second. Can't get a first serve in for love nor money.

:11:50. > :12:00.Some nerves there. Three points needed to win a match. It's only

:12:01. > :12:08.three points, it looks so close but it can also be so far away. Taking

:12:09. > :12:20.his time on his first set this time as well. It's a good first serve.

:12:21. > :12:36.Then he was forced to push back. He couldn't finish it.

:12:37. > :12:49.That it! That said, that's all he needs. It's very simple. This is

:12:50. > :12:59.really nice, not too close to the lines, not too much risk and still

:13:00. > :13:08.enough pace to give Italy no chance. That is a nice ball. This is

:13:09. > :13:12.impressive. Just look at the angle on this. He had to beat really,

:13:13. > :13:26.really above his shoulder. Not much you can do about that.

:13:27. > :13:38.This is tough, it's going to be difficult. We've arrived at match

:13:39. > :13:40.point for Erenlib, the first meeting these two. He's had a chance to win.

:13:41. > :14:02.Here it comes. It's always the toughest point,

:14:03. > :14:11.isn't it? That was quite tentative. From the Israeli. He gave Lapthorne

:14:12. > :14:51.a lifeline. High balls, deep balls. Now he's

:14:52. > :15:14.coming for word. -- coming for word. He was a bit too passive in that

:15:15. > :15:26.round until the very end. He got the result he was looking for.

:15:27. > :15:32.Will it work this time? It to do, we will see. A break point to make it

:15:33. > :15:58.5-5, second set, you need this. Then you have it all in your hands

:15:59. > :16:03.and give it away like this. And now what's happening in that hand, I

:16:04. > :16:05.wonder? You will know a bit more after we've seen this point, I

:16:06. > :16:27.think. Back to Gers. Good serve. Erenlib finding a good

:16:28. > :16:35.first serve exactly when he needed it then. Now for the second time at

:16:36. > :16:50.the is really has match point. -- the Israeli.

:16:51. > :16:58.I was just about to say double but I thought I better not. I just had a

:16:59. > :17:04.feeling a double was coming there. How many lifelines is he going to

:17:05. > :17:07.give Lapthorne? Second match point comes, second match point goes and

:17:08. > :17:49.this match is still active. That's nice. You expected it to be a

:17:50. > :17:57.crosscourt and he did. Third match point. Will this be it? Last time we

:17:58. > :18:12.had a double fault. Can he find a first serve? Can he put Lapthorne

:18:13. > :18:24.under pressure? The answer is yes! The eighth time of asking, Erenlib

:18:25. > :18:29.beats Andy Lapthorne. For the most part, the is really want care

:18:30. > :18:35.because he is beauty meeting David Waggoner in the final. That was just

:18:36. > :18:41.about as comprehensive as that score line suggests. 6-2, 6-4,

:18:42. > :18:51.disappointment for the home crowd, great celebrations for the Israelis.

:18:52. > :18:54.I played horrible, I had bad luck here in 2012, I don't play well

:18:55. > :18:57.every time I come back here. It's just one of those things were

:18:58. > :19:03.sometimes you go somewhere and it just doesn't work out. For me,

:19:04. > :19:07.unfortunately, it's at home in London where I come here and I just

:19:08. > :19:11.can't play. Who knows? I'm just glad that I didn't play like that in

:19:12. > :19:14.Brazil, to be honest. That was my only thought when I was playing.

:19:15. > :19:21.Thank God I didn't play like this in Brazil. I just seemed to not be able

:19:22. > :19:25.to play well here. It is what it is. Onto the next one, it's tough to

:19:26. > :19:27.take. I had a lot of people come here to support me, it's

:19:28. > :19:33.disappointing. There's nothing you can do. Not the result and it would

:19:34. > :19:38.have wanted but it was enough however to guarantee a place in the

:19:39. > :19:42.first of the Grand Slams in 2017, the Australian Open. Talking of

:19:43. > :19:53.Grand Slams, I caught up with some...

:19:54. > :19:58.There is a much bigger spectrum of disability involved in wheelchair

:19:59. > :20:03.tennis. Does that Nicky difference to the quality and standard of the

:20:04. > :20:07.players at the top? It's a good thing in wheelchair tennis that you

:20:08. > :20:11.only have two divisions, there is one quad division of people that

:20:12. > :20:17.have an pyramid on upper body and there is this other division which

:20:18. > :20:20.has all different kinds of disabilities from paralysis,

:20:21. > :20:26.amputees, people that have something to their hips. I guess because of

:20:27. > :20:32.that and because it's all put in one division, the quality of the game

:20:33. > :20:37.has gone up and be people that play has gone up. That's a good thing. On

:20:38. > :20:42.the other hand, you also see that the less disabled people will

:20:43. > :20:47.probably be the ones that are more successful than the more disabled

:20:48. > :20:55.people. And so, some opinions are but that's not equal and not fair. I

:20:56. > :20:59.guess in sport it hard anyways to say it's there because some people

:21:00. > :21:03.are strong, some people are little, some people are big, there is going

:21:04. > :21:07.to be differences all the time. If anybody is looking to get involved

:21:08. > :21:10.in wheelchair tennis, what advice would you give them? Wheelchair

:21:11. > :21:15.tennis is one of the sport she can play every level, any level with

:21:16. > :21:20.everybody or anybody. It could be with other disabled people, it could

:21:21. > :21:25.also be with your friends, your family, on a court outdoors,

:21:26. > :21:31.injuries, whether you want it on a high level or a recreational level,

:21:32. > :21:35.it is all possible. The fact that you can play it from whenever you

:21:36. > :21:40.are eight years old up until your 88, that's the good thing of tennis

:21:41. > :21:45.and then, besides that, I love tennis because it's not only a

:21:46. > :21:48.physical sport, is also a mental sport, tactical, very technical,

:21:49. > :21:53.that makes it difficult. Very challenging at the same time. Ten

:21:54. > :21:57.years undefeated in any sport in any discipline is a massive, massive

:21:58. > :22:02.achievement. When you look back at that period of your life, either any

:22:03. > :22:06.moment they're really stand out for you? There is one moment that stays

:22:07. > :22:17.in my mind forever, probably, and that would be the Paralympic final

:22:18. > :22:21.in 2008 in Beijing. I was playing a girl from a country he was my

:22:22. > :22:25.biggest rival and then in that final in the gold medal match she had a

:22:26. > :22:29.match point and then in some way I finally turned it around and won the

:22:30. > :22:37.gold medal. I guess that match will stand out forever because that was

:22:38. > :22:41.just a tense match. Lucy, it's obvious to see she is such an

:22:42. > :22:47.amazing athlete. Did you see her as a role model yourself? To be honest,

:22:48. > :22:51.she had a 470 match winning streak, pretty much the whole time I was

:22:52. > :22:57.playing wheelchair tennis from and I started to when she retired in 2012

:22:58. > :23:01.or after the Olympics, Paralympics, she didn't lose a singles match and

:23:02. > :23:05.that's phenomenal. But she's not just a tennis player, she's a

:23:06. > :23:11.fantastic person on Court, on Court, off court, polite to officials,

:23:12. > :23:14.team-mates, two opponents, just a fantastic overall person. Someone

:23:15. > :23:19.else who's been inspiring is Gordon Reid. What a year for him. From the

:23:20. > :23:22.start of the year winning that title at the Australian Open, it's given

:23:23. > :23:27.him the confidence to go forward. Winning the gold again in Rio, huge

:23:28. > :23:30.screen to bring that confidence street here into the Masters. He is

:23:31. > :23:36.playing very attacking, serving really well, moving really well and

:23:37. > :23:38.he's just a formidable person to be caught on to play against. What you

:23:39. > :23:45.think it will mean to him winning year? Yell it would just top his

:23:46. > :23:50.year off. He is no end of year number one but he's going to want

:23:51. > :23:57.this Masters title. It's not as straightforward as that, he's got a

:23:58. > :24:00.big volunteer. Gerard is a big player, big server, take the ball

:24:01. > :24:05.early on the return. He is going to be that a tonne away from Gordon.

:24:06. > :24:09.The last time these have met head-to-head it's been nine times to

:24:10. > :24:12.Gordon and eight times to Gerard, what do you think this time it?

:24:13. > :24:17.There's not much in it. He's going to come in it from winning the gold

:24:18. > :24:19.at Rio, Gerard is going to come in your knowing he is defending

:24:20. > :24:23.champion but knows that the core service release its him. There is

:24:24. > :24:30.not much in it between these two. Lets see how it goes. It was a

:24:31. > :24:33.scrappy start to the final. We join the match in the latter stages of

:24:34. > :24:37.the first set with both players struggling to hold their serif. --

:24:38. > :25:07.serve. COMMENTATOR: Just overdoing it. I

:25:08. > :25:13.think that's probably what he's thinking he's going to start doing.

:25:14. > :25:19.He needs to start applying some pressure to Gordon and Gordon wants

:25:20. > :25:27.this title quite a lot and at the same time, Gerard wants to defend

:25:28. > :25:34.his title. Who has got the confidence to go... Gerard is

:25:35. > :25:58.wanting to take the ball earlier, he's got to be effective with it.

:25:59. > :26:04.A little over heckling by the Belgian at the moment. He's halfway

:26:05. > :26:09.out the court as well, that's why. He has made a conscious effort to go

:26:10. > :26:12.in the closer to hit the ball earlier, take the time away from

:26:13. > :26:18.Gordon that actually has rolled insofar, he is now over hitting by

:26:19. > :26:36.Amy serif. Here he comes again. What a great return.

:26:37. > :26:47.You can never tell. He can be utterly amazing and then, you never

:26:48. > :26:51.know, as I said before it is the end of the season and some of these

:26:52. > :26:55.players, particularly Paralympic season, it's a very long road and

:26:56. > :27:00.they are all looking forward to having a break for a few weeks

:27:01. > :27:03.before the start all over again. Christmas and New Year and then

:27:04. > :27:11.straight back and do it again for another 11 months. They will still

:27:12. > :27:17.be drug tested though, out of competition drug testing. That's

:27:18. > :27:21.lovely, that is a great forehand and Gordon Reid has now come to life.

:27:22. > :27:26.That is the kind of shot that can spur him on. Look at that. Smacking

:27:27. > :27:40.it back to each other, backhand to forehand, forehand to backhand, and

:27:41. > :27:48.then a great play. What great hands. He had that in his armoury as well,

:27:49. > :27:52.Gerard, there is another three. It's heating up, isn't it? Is heating up.

:27:53. > :28:08.Just long. Brilliant. There you go.

:28:09. > :28:16.Back-to-back forehands from Gordon Reid and nothing, even the long

:28:17. > :28:20.reach of Gerard could do about that. It was quite a good serve, straight

:28:21. > :28:28.into Gordon's forehand and Gordon was rolling into it on the baseline.

:28:29. > :28:32.Lovely forehand. Gerard has got to give a bit more width on his serve

:28:33. > :28:41.is, he's either going to go his served above the white one. That is

:28:42. > :28:47.a great second serve. With a second serve like that, perhaps he doesn't

:28:48. > :28:50.need to. That makes his percentage go down severely for the Belgian.

:28:51. > :29:06.Two saved. Great first serve. You really took

:29:07. > :29:08.the pressure off himself there, it had pace on it, depth, everything,

:29:09. > :29:46.going out the sidelines. He's got it, two bounces is allowed.

:29:47. > :29:52.Great defence by Gordon. Yes he can! The answer is yes, it he can. Gordon

:29:53. > :29:58.Reid was not in that rally for a large part of it but still wins the

:29:59. > :30:01.point. Gerard made a fatal error there he thought he was going back

:30:02. > :30:06.behind Gordon is that final backhand and it went straight into Gordon's

:30:07. > :30:13.forehand and he flashed it down the side for a winner. Just been

:30:14. > :30:34.nullified again by a superb ace. Come on.

:30:35. > :30:43.In a position where Gerard could barely move, couldn't get to it such

:30:44. > :30:47.was the speed of that return. Yeah, didn't do enough on the serve.

:30:48. > :30:49.They both know they've got to put something on the second serve, they

:30:50. > :31:01.can't just put it in. A clever shot by Reid. Hit it

:31:02. > :31:05.straight back at Gerard. Gerard pulled back on his wheels to get out

:31:06. > :31:23.of the way but it wasn't enough. It's turning into the final we hoped

:31:24. > :31:30.it would be. Yeah. Just so you know you have to make sure you have to

:31:31. > :31:33.make sure the wheel doesn't touch the baseline, it's a wheel fault,

:31:34. > :31:38.same as a foot fault. No wheel touched the line. The lines people

:31:39. > :31:42.are pretty hot on that. Watching the quads, the serves were coming from

:31:43. > :31:47.way behind the baseline. Yeah, some of the quads do that, they sit a

:31:48. > :31:52.long way back to give themselves more time to react. Often hands are

:31:53. > :31:55.strapped to the racquet because they have limited grip, so less power and

:31:56. > :32:05.pace than these guys. Gordon has taken that so early. He

:32:06. > :32:10.did. Didn't even allow it to bounce really. It was in the process of

:32:11. > :32:14.bouncing when he took it. Nullified the bounce and got the

:32:15. > :32:18.ball back in play and rapidly he has the 40-0. Looks like his confidence

:32:19. > :32:33.is coming through, which is super to see.

:32:34. > :32:42.Just looking at my notes from Rio. Fastest serve, 147 from Reid in the

:32:43. > :32:48.final. He is a big strong lad. When they want to they can pump those

:32:49. > :32:55.serves down the tee. On this surface actually that would be quite a good

:32:56. > :33:02.tactic because it comes through so fast. He comes through that

:33:03. > :33:16.relatively unskwaited. The serve of both men definitely under pressure.

:33:17. > :33:24.He is still overhiting. Gerard giving a bit too much oomph on some

:33:25. > :33:28.of these shots at the moment. Yeah, I think also Gordon came in, made

:33:29. > :33:29.the play that Gerard had to think he had to do more than he really needed

:33:30. > :33:53.to. Oh, beautiful. Wow, what a backhand

:33:54. > :33:57.by Reid. Right at the back of the court. He is not just about

:33:58. > :34:01.forehands. A couple of beauties in there, but a backhand, as well.

:34:02. > :34:05.Superb, look at that. Using the wrist to get it out of the side

:34:06. > :34:15.lines. Not a hope to get that back. Fabulous shot.

:34:16. > :34:23.He's missed it. Now one point away from the set.

:34:24. > :34:28.Gordon Reid now on the verge of taking the first set.

:34:29. > :34:37.It's not going to make Gerard feel very comfortable at all. He is going

:34:38. > :34:39.to get quite angry with himself. Second serve, you have to attack

:34:40. > :34:57.this, Mr Reid. Come on, move in. Gordon Reid does take the first set

:34:58. > :34:59.having come from behind on breaks a few times, but ultimately gets the

:35:00. > :35:09.job done by 6-4. Reid takes the first set but as

:35:10. > :35:10.neither player can dominate the championships is still very much up

:35:11. > :35:41.for grabs. That's the first point on the serve

:35:42. > :35:48.for three games. Now Gerard gets in front in a game he needs to win.

:35:49. > :35:56.And he is on his way to winning it. And levelling this match up.

:35:57. > :36:01.Two more points and he will be there. It's a super point. You can

:36:02. > :36:06.see he leans forward. The strap is keeping him in his chair nice and

:36:07. > :36:12.solid and he hits a lovely rolled backhand down the line.

:36:13. > :36:24.Great technical play. Isn't Gerard one of these players that plays or

:36:25. > :36:32.was trained at the Justin Henin Academy in Belgium? Nice play. We

:36:33. > :36:38.have seen some artistry from the Belgian, from time to time.

:36:39. > :36:41.Sliced drop shots, super little shot. Three set points for the world

:36:42. > :37:00.number three. Nicely played.

:37:01. > :37:05.There is that forehand when he needs it. Not down the line this time, the

:37:06. > :37:08.forehand cross-court. Yeah. The shot just before that Gordon hit it

:37:09. > :37:13.really deep to the baseline and Gerard was sitting on the baseline

:37:14. > :37:19.and didn't really do enough with his return that allowed Gordon to hit

:37:20. > :37:25.that for a winner. Two set points still.

:37:26. > :37:34.Only one now. Seen that coming, didn't do enough

:37:35. > :37:38.on his serve. It was a good serve but it wasn't deep enough and wasn't

:37:39. > :37:43.hard enough and wasn't in the right location.

:37:44. > :37:52.Gordon just wheeled in and went thank you, I will take that for a

:37:53. > :37:56.winner. That's gone long. It goes long. And Gerard levels the match

:37:57. > :38:03.up. We go into the third set and Gordon

:38:04. > :38:04.has left himself a lot of work to do if he wants to win this Masters

:38:05. > :38:10.title. Now, is there any way back for

:38:11. > :38:26.Gordon Reid? Not like that. He has to be more

:38:27. > :38:32.positive. He's taken the pace off his shots. He needs to just up the

:38:33. > :38:37.intensity and pace again. He has nothing to lose now, he is 4-0 down.

:38:38. > :38:43.It's pointless hitting it to Gerard because Gerard is playing too well

:38:44. > :38:50.at the moment. Attack.

:38:51. > :38:57.There's such contrast to the match on Saturday where he dominated from

:38:58. > :39:02.the start pretty much. Yes, you are absolutely right. Here he is playing

:39:03. > :39:08.- Gerard fades in and out, but Gordon is trying to play an even

:39:09. > :39:13.game. I think he needs to up his intensity more, put more pace on the

:39:14. > :39:18.ball. Take the time away from Gerard. A nice serve. But a brave

:39:19. > :39:22.return. Goodness me! Did everything he could

:39:23. > :39:27.do with that serve but it came back with interest. It was a fabulous

:39:28. > :39:39.reverse backhand cross-court. Pinpoint accuracy.

:39:40. > :39:48.No, missed it. He might be facing a break point

:39:49. > :40:11.again. But he has a point to get on the board in set number three.

:40:12. > :40:19.Not done yet. No, a bit of a serve straight into

:40:20. > :40:24.Gerard and Gerard really poked it back down the line and again on this

:40:25. > :40:49.surface, if you are not moving the chair, it pops away for a winner.

:40:50. > :40:55.Haven't had too many of those for Reid recently. UMPIRE: Advantage

:40:56. > :41:30.Reid. Nice. Got it back, though.

:41:31. > :41:53.Another dropped shot. Playing like a violin.

:41:54. > :41:56.He would have loved to have an easy straightforward service game, but

:41:57. > :42:00.can't get any rhythm. No, it's not going to happen. He has to be

:42:01. > :42:05.careful because this set is - it happens sometimes, you play a match

:42:06. > :42:10.and before you know it you are 4-0 down and trying to reverse those

:42:11. > :42:18.figures is really difficult. In trouble now.

:42:19. > :42:21.Lobbed again. It's gone wide. You can't rely on

:42:22. > :42:26.your opponent making mistakes. Absolutely not. Gordon has to be

:42:27. > :42:38.positive. He is not being positive enough.

:42:39. > :42:49.At last. The crowd have been very, very quiet, they've had nothing to

:42:50. > :42:53.cheer. I don't know what Gordon is going to do. I just think he's been

:42:54. > :43:08.asleep for about four games. He needs a break. He needs two of

:43:09. > :43:19.them. It's all possible. The set is not

:43:20. > :43:31.gone until it's gone. Trying to hook that one around.

:43:32. > :43:37.Just gave it a little bit too much. Gordon has to take his errors out.

:43:38. > :43:47.Take the error out and he can win this game. 4-2 and then he is

:43:48. > :43:51.serving and you are back on. Simple sitting here saying that! He missed

:43:52. > :43:54.it. Dropped shot from behind the baseline is always difficult to pull

:43:55. > :43:57.off. Yeah, it is but Gerard has already done that a couple of times

:43:58. > :44:21.in this match but that was just... Gordon went for that forehand return

:44:22. > :44:29.but he missed it. Hit the top of the net. Needs a miracle now. Yeah, if

:44:30. > :44:33.Gerard gets this serve and goes 5-1 I can't see him coming back really.

:44:34. > :44:40.Yeah, and he has. He has opened up a four-game

:44:41. > :44:47.advantage, yet again. Now it's 1-5. He is in sight of retaining his

:44:48. > :44:52.title. And preventing Gordon from winning his first Masters title at

:44:53. > :44:58.the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. The crowd still believe they

:44:59. > :45:03.can urge him over the line but it will take a huge effort from here. I

:45:04. > :45:09.think we will see Gerard - he has nothing to lose, he will attack all

:45:10. > :45:12.these serves now. Even if he makes a mistake like that, he still has to

:45:13. > :45:29.put pressure on Gordon. Great return. A terrific return.

:45:30. > :45:34.Really good return. Just when he needs to add some more. Look where

:45:35. > :45:38.Gerard is now hitting his return of serve. A metre inside the baseline.

:45:39. > :45:42.And again. Oh, missed it! Like you said he is

:45:43. > :45:46.going to go for broke. That's what he is doing. Some will come off.

:45:47. > :45:50.Some won't. He will want to finish it here, put pressure on. It's easy

:45:51. > :45:56.to win the match with a return serve than it is to serve it out.

:45:57. > :46:01.Keeping Reid in the match for the time being, those errors.

:46:02. > :46:18.Not too many smiles around at the moment.

:46:19. > :46:28.Well played. Looked like it was going to go wide. The top spin

:46:29. > :46:39.brought it in. He kept his composure and at least stays in the match.

:46:40. > :46:51.Reid has to try and read the serve of Gerard or it's all over. Doesn't

:46:52. > :47:04.A double to start off with. It's the hardest game to win, to

:47:05. > :47:10.finish a match, when it's as prestigious as this, this is the

:47:11. > :47:15.toughest game to win. This point, this point, this point, that's the

:47:16. > :47:20.mantra. Pick your spot. He is overpressing a little bit. He is

:47:21. > :47:23.trying to hit it too hard. Just pick it.

:47:24. > :47:41.12 aces. Six double faults. He is the defending champion, he so wants

:47:42. > :47:46.to do that, take some of the fame and glory off Gordon.

:47:47. > :47:55.A good serve. Just got it in. That was playing with the margins. Didn't

:47:56. > :47:59.have to be that tight to the line. Well, it did because out of your

:48:00. > :48:05.picture Gordon came flying back in because he read where the ball was

:48:06. > :48:10.going to go. They're such small courts, a lot of the courts are much

:48:11. > :48:21.bigger, that would have come back. And that one does.

:48:22. > :48:24.APPLAUSE That's the most animated the crowd

:48:25. > :48:30.have been for a while. Two break points. Is the Gordon comeback about

:48:31. > :48:35.to begin here? A good comeback too, if it is.

:48:36. > :48:42.Of course it would be 6-6, that takes us to a tie-break.

:48:43. > :48:48.There is that serve I was saying about earlier. That's his favourite

:48:49. > :48:57.serve. He wants the ball back, as well. It's amazing the superstitions

:48:58. > :48:59.of players, it's a ball. Doesn't have special, magical qualities.

:49:00. > :49:17.It's the ace ball! OK. The rolled forehand goes wide. Now

:49:18. > :49:24.he is two points away. Playing dangerous game, Gordon Reid.

:49:25. > :49:39.He has to attack the second serve, put the pressure back on the server.

:49:40. > :49:43.Right on the line. Just on the right side. It's a super

:49:44. > :49:51.flashing backhand. Such a great shot he has got there.

:49:52. > :50:00.Ace number 14. There is a bit of a pattern there.

:50:01. > :50:09.Gerard goes down the T and goes on the first serve goes out wide.

:50:10. > :50:20.Oh! It's just in. He doesn't think so.

:50:21. > :50:28.Gerard doesn't think so. The linesman called it in. Let's

:50:29. > :50:33.have a look. The dropped shot wasn't good enough on two bounces. . Look,

:50:34. > :50:38.the linesman called that in. It's the opposite side from the umpire so

:50:39. > :50:45.he can't really overrule. That's going to upset Gerard.

:50:46. > :50:52.Here comes a double. I shouldn't say that!

:50:53. > :50:59.Mystic Pete. Well played. No! He put it wide.

:51:00. > :51:06.That was right on his racquet, as well. He read the play, he had the

:51:07. > :51:10.shot. Just couldn't keep it in the bounds of the court.

:51:11. > :51:24.He needs a good second serve here again.

:51:25. > :51:33.A double. Seven. Just shaking the arm. Get the nerves

:51:34. > :51:46.out. Needs to be loose, loose as a goose.

:51:47. > :51:56.That was a complete mis-hit from Reid. Absolutely. But Gerard had

:51:57. > :51:59.come in, he is inside the baseline and really had a volley and could

:52:00. > :52:07.have... He decided to boost it and it went long.

:52:08. > :52:10.He is still in it. That's one of the two breaks he needs. Needs to hold

:52:11. > :52:12.on to his serve or we don't go any further.

:52:13. > :52:27.That's a good lob. Yeah, all set up for that brilliant

:52:28. > :52:33.lob. Are we seeing the see-saw again?

:52:34. > :52:34.Backwards and forwards points. One player playing well, then the other

:52:35. > :52:46.one isn't. Now the other one is. Terrific serve.

:52:47. > :52:52.Where has this Gordon Reid been? Didn't see him in the first part of

:52:53. > :52:57.the third set. The pressure has been taken off him. Now he can play. He

:52:58. > :53:02.has absolutely nothing to lose. Andering everything to gain.

:53:03. > :53:07.All the pressure has gone back on Gerard, who is the defending

:53:08. > :53:12.champion. His game's gone apart. He thought he had it in the bag, and

:53:13. > :53:14.now not. He was two points away from winning

:53:15. > :53:36.it. Easily put away. Have to do that a

:53:37. > :53:41.few more times, though. Yeah, lovely volley. As soon as you

:53:42. > :53:47.come into the net like that, keep nice and tight. Sit up straight and

:53:48. > :53:57.just poke the ball over the net for a winner.

:53:58. > :54:07.Oh! Again a double - questioning from Gerard. But the linesman

:54:08. > :54:10.answering in the affirmative as far as Reid's concerned. He was four

:54:11. > :54:24.games behind. He is now one game behind.

:54:25. > :54:31.What a fabulous shot. Brilliant backhand by the Belgian. That will

:54:32. > :54:36.calm the nerves. Smooth, picked his spot. Saw the gap. What a fabulous

:54:37. > :54:53.backhand down the line there. Reid needs to make sure he plays

:54:54. > :54:55.every single ball. There aren't too many more options.

:54:56. > :55:16.Again two points away from winning. Three match points for the defending

:55:17. > :55:23.champion. Winner of 2015 on the verge of doing it in again the world

:55:24. > :55:47.number three has match point. There is no Masters title to add to

:55:48. > :55:54.the Wimbledon and Paralympic title for Gordon Reid. It's back-to-back

:55:55. > :55:56.Masters wins for the Belgian Joachim Gerard. He comes through, conceding

:55:57. > :56:02.the first set. Brilliant serving along the way and

:56:03. > :56:09.he kept his game together when Gordon Reid couldn't in set number

:56:10. > :56:13.three. It is the Belgian who takes the

:56:14. > :56:20.applause and plaudits of the crowd and upsets the world number one in

:56:21. > :56:25.their final head-to-head. It means the head-to-head is now

:56:26. > :56:31.nine each. Three wins out of four now for Reid

:56:32. > :56:35.in recent encounters. I think my serving let me down a little bit

:56:36. > :56:41.today. Those two been my two biggest strengths this week so far. Really

:56:42. > :56:45.important on this surface and I probably did the worst today, when

:56:46. > :56:49.you can't get a good start to the rallies, then a good start to the

:56:50. > :56:53.point, then it's difficult to get into the match on this surface,

:56:54. > :56:58.especially when Jo is serving well. Disappointed with that. It's been a

:56:59. > :57:03.brilliant year. Today doesn't change that. I have to try and forget about

:57:04. > :57:07.that performance today because it was disappointing but when I reflect

:57:08. > :57:11.on the year, obviously really happy with everything that's gone on.

:57:12. > :57:16.Going to have good memories that I will cherish forever from 2016. I

:57:17. > :57:19.knew Gordon was the man to beat. Many people told me that I was, we

:57:20. > :57:25.were two men here who could play very well and Gordon was man of the

:57:26. > :57:38.year, he shows it and I know it will not be easy. I am happy about that

:57:39. > :57:41.win that I could be number two. Disappointing finish for Gordon and

:57:42. > :57:45.not the result we would have wanted. Yeah, I think he is going to be very

:57:46. > :57:50.disappointed with that one. I think he knew that the match was going to

:57:51. > :57:54.be tough. Jochim taking the ball so early and he took his chances in

:57:55. > :57:59.that third set. Tricking the ball early, putting it down the line.

:58:00. > :58:04.Going for that cross-court to Gordon's forehand was punishing him.

:58:05. > :58:06.Gordon was punishing him. Every time he changed it up he was winning the

:58:07. > :58:14.point and he obviously realised that. You could see the strength in

:58:15. > :58:17.Joachim's serve. He is a big guy, probably 6ft plus so he has a good

:58:18. > :58:21.serve and when it's on it's difficult to read and to return it.

:58:22. > :58:26.When he managed to get that working really well. How do you think Gordon

:58:27. > :58:29.will bounce back? He obviously would have wanted the title. He is going

:58:30. > :58:33.to end the year on world number one. He is going to take the positives

:58:34. > :58:36.from it. He will go away and he will probably review the match with his

:58:37. > :58:40.coach and he will get ready for Australia and come out and hopefully

:58:41. > :58:43.defend his title there. Of course, it wasn't just Gordon

:58:44. > :58:58.playing. There were other finals happening, as well.

:58:59. > :59:05.David Wagner beat Itay Erenlib from Israel.

:59:06. > :59:08.That's it from us here at the wheelchair tennis Masters. Don't

:59:09. > :59:15.forget you can see the draw for the third round of the FA Cup hosted by

:59:16. > :59:18.Mark Chapman tonight on BBC Two. Lucy, thank you very much for

:59:19. > :59:22.joining us here. Who would have thought it would be three Scots

:59:23. > :59:29.finishing number one in 2016?
