0:00:00 > 0:00:03Now on BBC News, an exclusive interview, the BBC catches up with

0:00:03 > 0:00:07former 41 champion, Nico Rosberg, to hear about his plans for the future,

0:00:07 > 0:00:08and his take

0:00:08 > 0:00:12on this year's F1 championship. There has been a big shock in the

0:00:12 > 0:00:19Formula 1.He won the F1 championship in the last weekend

0:00:19 > 0:00:22that has announced his retirement from the sport. It announcement came

0:00:22 > 0:00:28five days after he won the title for the first day time, holding off

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Lewis Hamilton in a thrilling championship that went down to the

0:00:31 > 0:00:39final race.

0:00:46 > 0:00:5212 months ago, after achieving my childhood dream and achieving the

0:00:52 > 0:00:56World Championship, I decided to call it a day. This is a story of my

0:00:56 > 0:01:06past year and ran today and what I want to achieve in the future. --

0:01:06 > 0:01:17and where I am today.Here's a wonderful guy, really. Really sweet.

0:01:17 > 0:01:24I think a lot of dad 's can't really empathise with small children. To

0:01:24 > 0:01:31me, it is even more wonderful to see him as a dad, now.But times, I

0:01:31 > 0:01:35think, have changed, also. Nowadays, dads to get more involved and do the

0:01:35 > 0:01:39nappy changes. I think that is pretty normal now, in the world,

0:01:39 > 0:01:43whereas when I speak to my dad, I mean to me he did not even know what

0:01:43 > 0:01:48a nappy was. So I think there is a bit of a... Exactly. I think it is a

0:01:48 > 0:02:01nice change their happening in the world. -- there.First of all, super

0:02:01 > 0:02:05brave, and we have had so many reactions and personal reactions of

0:02:05 > 0:02:09people who have said oh, you have inspired me to take more time with

0:02:09 > 0:02:14my family, or to step up and do what I really want to do in life. I

0:02:14 > 0:02:19really admire that. And so when he took the decision, I was, of course,

0:02:19 > 0:02:25a bit shocked, but very, very happy. When he said, you know what, I think

0:02:25 > 0:02:36I will stop, I am stopping...She was like, yeah, whatever... Total

0:02:36 > 0:02:41rubbish to me now.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Initially, I was not a busy. I took some time off to recover from all

0:02:50 > 0:02:54the celebrations, as well. It was pretty intense. At the same time,

0:02:54 > 0:02:59though, you know, it was a starting, yeah? Things move on quickly, and

0:02:59 > 0:03:06they needed to put things into place for this next step in my life. Had I

0:03:06 > 0:03:09earn a living now, going forward? Because all of a sudden the racing

0:03:09 > 0:03:13goes away. Yes, of course, I have great savings, but I want to keep

0:03:13 > 0:03:18earning a living, of course. I don't want to just rely on my savings.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Would you in courage or daughters to get into motorsport?I am actually

0:03:22 > 0:03:26very happy we have two girls because of exactly this point. No, I don't

0:03:26 > 0:03:30think so. Just because I have, you know, I have suffered a lot with

0:03:30 > 0:03:36him, obviously. For me it is more developed do was to watch a race.

0:03:36 > 0:03:42Speaking about goal racing drivers, I was in a TV show two days ago, and

0:03:42 > 0:03:47it was small and you speak, so small children against adults. And I had

0:03:47 > 0:03:52to race against a nine-year-old girl. Very, very sweet girl. And she

0:03:52 > 0:03:57is ago car driver, though. She does love and she does raises, and I had

0:03:57 > 0:04:04to race on the show. And she beat me. -- she does slalom. The same

0:04:04 > 0:04:09track, present card, everything. And you beat me by two seconds. And I

0:04:09 > 0:04:13give it everything. So there are some girls are really know how to

0:04:13 > 0:04:24drive fast. -- same track, same kart, everything.

0:04:41 > 0:04:48I'm with you my bucket list. I was in the moniker national team as a

0:04:48 > 0:04:51tennis player when I was young. And it was really a potential career

0:04:51 > 0:04:59route at one point. My mother was encouraged me that way. -- back on.

0:04:59 > 0:05:04My mother wanted me to do tennis my father wanted me to do the racing. I

0:05:04 > 0:05:08chose the racing. I always wanted to play tennis. The Roger Federer, of

0:05:08 > 0:05:15course. Centre court, world box, magical. Magical Ducie Roger Federer

0:05:15 > 0:05:19on his way to save title, one of the biggest achievement is the world of

0:05:19 > 0:05:23sport has ever seen. You are in or of what you see. And the English

0:05:23 > 0:05:29etiquette that is there, yes? And the peacefulness. This whole space

0:05:29 > 0:05:40is just so quiet, and you hear every little bounce.

0:05:44 > 0:05:53So here are my favourite coffee shop in Monaco, just waiting for our

0:05:53 > 0:05:58arrival. We will go for a ride with him and go around the F1 track. I

0:05:58 > 0:06:01can talk about my expresses on the track, the different corners to him,

0:06:01 > 0:06:08so they would be great, looking forward to it. -- so that should be

0:06:08 > 0:06:19great.How are you?Good, good to meet you. I'm excited our ride.Yes,

0:06:19 > 0:06:34go check out the F1 circuit.I have the pleasure of being in poll.I

0:06:34 > 0:06:42guess here on the backline circuit, poll is even more important.Isi

0:06:42 > 0:06:50Gabsa the first corner first, it is very likely to pass.-- Monaco

0:06:50 > 0:06:59circuit. Unless you make a big mistake.Exactly. What is the big

0:06:59 > 0:07:04thing for you guys? The World Championships of the Olympics?Yes,

0:07:04 > 0:07:08the World Championship saw the living. That is what Monaco is to

0:07:08 > 0:07:14us. I went to school here. My school is just over here right above the

0:07:14 > 0:07:18Formula 1 track. I would have done on the legends and dream that I

0:07:18 > 0:07:29wanted to be there one day. -- I would have looked down on the

0:07:29 > 0:07:34legends. With the squad, you can see the pen interface, it yes? We suffer

0:07:34 > 0:07:42in the same way, but you just don't see it so much. -- you can see the

0:07:42 > 0:07:49pain on your face. The spectator can't see how on the edge I am.I

0:07:49 > 0:07:53had no idea was like that. It would be fascinating for people to see

0:07:53 > 0:08:02that first man.We are going at 180 194 the last hour the race.Wow.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06That is why I was West Ryde to slow a lot my training, because they

0:08:06 > 0:08:19can't... Is validity is the body not to lives as -- that is why at I was

0:08:19 > 0:08:26always going slow a lot in my training, because I can't. I lost a

0:08:26 > 0:08:30lot of weight last year in of the season. I can't go died in the

0:08:30 > 0:08:36middle of the season, because it is and physically too tough.Yeah.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40Sysops cycling to use the leg muscles. I lost one kilo of leg

0:08:40 > 0:08:47muscle in the summer. In Japan after the summer I was on poll by a few

0:08:47 > 0:08:51hundred to the second from Lewis Hamilton. And the legs were for

0:08:51 > 0:08:56hundreds of the second. That gave me a lead that has won a race. That is

0:08:56 > 0:09:00a cool story of how that worked out. You had to stop cycling key lose

0:09:00 > 0:09:13that extra kilo. -- cycling so you could lose. There is annoying TV

0:09:13 > 0:09:21work and there is fun TV work. This is one keyword. Chris joining me, it

0:09:21 > 0:09:26is great because I'm a big fan of the sport, and I like a lot myself.

0:09:26 > 0:09:32And I was circling Mosul. She is. That was good fun. It was

0:09:32 > 0:09:35fascinating to me to learn a little bit more about F1 and to hear

0:09:35 > 0:09:41actually how physical abuse. I have to admit I have watched on collision

0:09:41 > 0:09:46a few times and just thought they just said in a car, those guys, they

0:09:46 > 0:09:50must be really skilled getting around all the corners, the way they

0:09:50 > 0:09:54do, but at the end of the day, they are sitting in a car. They are not

0:09:54 > 0:10:01paddling.You have no idea what it means to suffer, yeah?Exactly.

0:10:01 > 0:10:06Every F1 driver since they basically sweating at 190 beats a minute. For

0:10:06 > 0:10:15two hours in a race. It is, yeah, absolutely, it does state that does

0:10:15 > 0:10:19put things into perspective a little bit.And now you'll go back to

0:10:19 > 0:10:27training?Yeah, yeah, I have offer a bit than I need is to be back into

0:10:27 > 0:10:32shape and go for the new season if it is OK, I might tell you one of

0:10:32 > 0:10:53these days. They welcome.-- very welcome. A very, very special place,

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Oxford union. Special people have come here and spoken I believe.

0:10:56 > 0:11:15Albert Einstein...Albert Einstein? That is big shoes to fill.The

0:11:15 > 0:11:21reigning world champion, please join me in giving a warm welcome to Nico

0:11:21 > 0:11:30Rosberg.Which engine you prefer? The V8 or the V6? The sound in our

0:11:30 > 0:11:40sport is guitars.And of the ten on -- and be V10 was incredible. I

0:11:40 > 0:11:44would really go back to that. It is difficult. The manufacturers in the

0:11:44 > 0:11:48sport there to show that we think about the future of the world. And

0:11:48 > 0:11:52the manufacturers want to have their technologies which are relevant to

0:11:52 > 0:11:56the road cars, which are small engines. So you can understand that.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01But for the fans of the sport as well, the entertainment factor,

0:12:01 > 0:12:07V10s. Because that is so special. And today I was at track, and the

0:12:07 > 0:12:11V6s do not sound good. It is unfortunate.Like a little

0:12:11 > 0:12:26motorbike?Laker moped. Yeah, like a moped. -- like a moped. Great to see

0:12:26 > 0:12:31how enthusiastic there were about our sport. Everybody knew Formula 1,

0:12:31 > 0:12:34loved it, and you're the details. That was very surprising. Did not

0:12:34 > 0:12:38expect that. Perfect. I do stuff that is along the lines of my

0:12:38 > 0:12:45passions. Oxford, I would have always gone that, English university

0:12:45 > 0:12:51route. I had a place in it through a university to study aeronautics. It

0:12:51 > 0:12:57was great to talk from a seat where Einstein was one sitting. To talk to

0:12:57 > 0:13:00students that are the most intelligent people that are living

0:13:00 > 0:13:05on this planet, the students there, yes? They will do incredible things.

0:13:05 > 0:13:14Wow, that is amazing. The doctors can virtually practice operating on

0:13:14 > 0:13:25humans.Press on the buttons for two seconds, and at The will is gone,

0:13:25 > 0:13:29and we glide backwards, so you can stretch out your legs and we can do

0:13:29 > 0:13:34whatever.Why add is that southern world where it is important to me to

0:13:34 > 0:13:37build credibility in that area, yeah? Seven people to be seriously.

0:13:37 > 0:13:43Because one thing is that I think I can do it, that people do not use

0:13:43 > 0:13:46usually, there is no benefit. So takes a bit of time to some

0:13:46 > 0:13:52credibility. The general Formula 1 driver is a big, big narcissist. In

0:13:52 > 0:13:56other then sell them things is the best in the world. And it is always

0:13:56 > 0:14:00the other guy's fault. They give you a certain strength in this crazy

0:14:00 > 0:14:03environment, where you are judged by millions and millions of people

0:14:03 > 0:14:06every little moment, what you're doing. There are some prejudice in

0:14:06 > 0:14:09the business world when it comes to F1 racing drivers. Because they

0:14:09 > 0:14:14don't necessarily expect you to other competencies. I was more on

0:14:14 > 0:14:20the other side. I am more sensitive less narcissistic. But, you know, at

0:14:20 > 0:14:25times difficult. But the strength in question myself or the time. When I

0:14:25 > 0:14:29stopped, I have savings are correct, yeah? I need to do something with

0:14:29 > 0:14:33that now, yeah? One thing is being, of course, passionate about cars.

0:14:33 > 0:14:42Cars Jedha played a very soon. And mobility in general. It will relish

0:14:42 > 0:14:45-- revolutionise our lives. And we are looking to improve emissions and

0:14:45 > 0:14:50global warming, and all about. Not really. It is electric cars and

0:14:50 > 0:14:53improve that. It is when the infrastructure improves as well to

0:14:53 > 0:14:5750 cars with energy. So when you get more solar power, more wind,

0:14:57 > 0:15:01turbines, and this is a things, and autonomous cars will be huge for the

0:15:01 > 0:15:06way we lives. Reading. Efficiency in our lives, ease of living, massive.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10It will change everything with the push of a button. A drone will lend

0:15:10 > 0:15:15here, you know, or wherever. A man carrying a drone, had jumped in, it

0:15:15 > 0:15:18refers to the destination. No flame person required. It is just

0:15:18 > 0:15:22autonomous. It will be awesome. And this is just around the corner. And

0:15:22 > 0:15:33this is just the corner. Unable with a start-up sky because in the

0:15:33 > 0:15:36start-up world there are fascinating people. People who are daring to

0:15:36 > 0:15:39people who are embedded, creative geniuses. The meat, beginners people

0:15:39 > 0:15:43and discussing with them has been interesting. I really dig into that.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46It has been equal right. That is also I am going to silicon valley.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50That is the ultimate epicentre of start-ups. People are not scared to

0:15:50 > 0:15:53fellow there. In our society, people are really scared to fail. And that

0:15:53 > 0:15:57holds us back, yeah? Over there, it is normal to fail. And you're

0:15:57 > 0:16:01expected to fail.

0:16:01 > 0:16:06Are you prepared to fail?I don't like failing, I don't like losing,

0:16:06 > 0:16:12so it's going to be difficult.Five or ten years time, where is Nico

0:16:12 > 0:16:16Rosberg and what is he doing? That's not an easy question. Really

0:16:16 > 0:16:20important for me is that I find a good balance personally in my life,

0:16:20 > 0:16:25that I am very happy and at ease. I spend a lot of time working with my

0:16:25 > 0:16:29mental training, studying, I studied psychology for many years, serving

0:16:29 > 0:16:34ten years I would like to be in a better position for myself and my

0:16:34 > 0:16:40family. It could be being a manager and having a couple of drivers. I

0:16:40 > 0:16:46enjoy that because you can really experience similar emotions to when

0:16:46 > 0:16:53you are driving yourself. So that's cool, because the emotions when you

0:16:53 > 0:16:57win and have success as a driver are so intense. It's not easy to find

0:16:57 > 0:17:01that elsewhere in life. But there is an opportunity if you work with

0:17:01 > 0:17:05other drivers and support them and become part of their team to relive

0:17:05 > 0:17:08some of those emotions, so that could be something in the longer

0:17:08 > 0:17:14term.If you hadn't won the title in 2016, would you have continued?

0:17:14 > 0:17:22Going into the last race, absolutely one of the most intense or nervous

0:17:22 > 0:17:29moments in my life, because this was the start to something else. Whether

0:17:29 > 0:17:34I get my dream or not. And you never know if you will get a second

0:17:34 > 0:17:40chance. The rules were changing, it was totally different. I had no idea

0:17:40 > 0:17:45if I could build the car. I knew its was crucial. I've done so much

0:17:45 > 0:17:50meditation and nothing help in that moment. The only thing that helped

0:17:50 > 0:17:54was suddenly the realisation that this could be my last race, because

0:17:54 > 0:17:58I knew if I win I was stopping and that they need clarity all of a

0:17:58 > 0:18:02sudden to take in and enjoy the moment. So very strange and

0:18:02 > 0:18:08therefore I knew that if I didn't win I would continue because I don't

0:18:08 > 0:18:13ever give up and I want to achieve what I set out to do.Lewis Hamilton

0:18:13 > 0:18:20is the four-time world champion. Quite an incredible achievement. But

0:18:20 > 0:18:24you are the only guy who has taken him on head-to-head and beaten him

0:18:24 > 0:18:28at the world title. How does that feel? It's very nice to hear that

0:18:28 > 0:18:32and I'm very proud of that and it makes my achievement little bit more

0:18:32 > 0:18:36special, because I know that next to me was Lewis and he's an incredible

0:18:36 > 0:18:42driver and I've beaten him in the way it all happened. Perfect. Can I

0:18:42 > 0:18:48talk to you about fear. Does that enter your mind? Is it something you

0:18:48 > 0:18:53were able to force out as a young driver? Are not as crazy as some of

0:18:53 > 0:19:02the other guys. -- I'm not. Back in 2016 is an example. We were doing

0:19:02 > 0:19:09360 on a straight, or something. In the city. Then we were jumping along

0:19:09 > 0:19:14the straight and on the left-hand side was the pitlane entry. Going

0:19:14 > 0:19:18past their every single lap we were thinking if something fails in the

0:19:18 > 0:19:22car and go into that it's finished. So there were a few moments where I

0:19:22 > 0:19:28did a bit scared.Fortunately it never slowed me down.Your most

0:19:28 > 0:19:32satisfying race win? One of the most satisfying ones was winning Monaco

0:19:32 > 0:19:38for the first time. My father always told me since I was young that there

0:19:38 > 0:19:43were two things you needed as a Formula 1 driver. Monaco and the

0:19:43 > 0:19:47World Championship. Monaco was special for me because it was my

0:19:47 > 0:19:52home. My way to school was the way through the tunnel, the way my mum

0:19:52 > 0:19:56would drive me to school. But the entire weekend and every single

0:19:56 > 0:20:03practice session, qualifying, the race, I was able to share it with

0:20:03 > 0:20:09friends and family and our prints. Wonderful.Your most embarrassing

0:20:09 > 0:20:15moment in Formula 1?I have way too many. It's horrible, those ones.

0:20:15 > 0:20:22Really not good. An example, I took out my teammate Mark Webber in the

0:20:22 > 0:20:29last race. In Singapore I ran second. Singapore would have been

0:20:29 > 0:20:36such a great achievement. And I went over the white line as well. So many

0:20:36 > 0:20:41tough moments when you do something so stupid.Have you had a situation

0:20:41 > 0:20:46where maybe some of the Formula 1 fans have said, Nico, we are really

0:20:46 > 0:20:52disappointed he retired?Every day. A lot of people say, so cool and

0:20:52 > 0:20:56happy you found your way and you achieved what you set out to do.

0:20:56 > 0:21:01Even a lot of people say, I can understand that you stepped away.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05And some people saying it's such a pity, we would love to see you

0:21:05 > 0:21:09battle Lewis Hamilton again and be in the mix, right at the front. It's

0:21:09 > 0:21:13a mix which is normal and I understand that, because it was a

0:21:13 > 0:21:16pretty extreme thing to do and some people understand, some people

0:21:16 > 0:21:20don't, but for me it was the right ring. Jet skiing time with my

0:21:20 > 0:21:26daughter. The last one of the year, which will be cool. Going to wear a

0:21:26 > 0:21:30wetsuit. This is for the person who didn't ring swimming trunks, which

0:21:30 > 0:21:35is me, which was not very clever. One of the most special things in

0:21:35 > 0:21:39life is friends and family because that's where you get the most

0:21:39 > 0:21:45pressure. It sucks because in our lives the least... We spend so

0:21:45 > 0:21:49little time with our friends and family because we are so busy

0:21:49 > 0:21:53working and doing everything else. That's so pity, that we are so bad

0:21:53 > 0:21:57at doing that. So was an incredible day, going on the yacht in the south

0:21:57 > 0:22:02of France. That beautiful day. Laughing, eating, messing around on

0:22:02 > 0:22:10jetskis. For me that was as good as it gets, personally.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15Sebastian Vettel?

0:22:18 > 0:22:20Fernando Alonso?
