:00:09. > :00:15.Welcome to Nottingham, where we are about to witness something very

:00:16. > :00:18.special indeed. For the first time ever, British Triathlon are staging

:00:19. > :00:24.the Mixed Relay Cup, a showcase of the best triathletes in the UK, with

:00:25. > :00:28.a sprinkling of international top talent. So, the athletes are pumped,

:00:29. > :00:33.they are ready to go. The crowds of Nottingham have lined the streets.

:00:34. > :00:37.All you have to do is sit back, relax and, for the next two hours or

:00:38. > :00:44.so, enjoy the sport of triathlon like you have never seen it before.

:00:45. > :00:47.They are ready to go. He's down! That's going to hurt! And explosive

:00:48. > :00:53.start. Spectacular! Alistair Brownlee,

:00:54. > :01:11.rounding it off in style. Well, it is certainly going to be a

:01:12. > :01:16.bit different, but very exciting indeed. How about you, Nottingham?

:01:17. > :01:21.Looking absolutely resplendent this afternoon. Welcome, everybody, to

:01:22. > :01:24.live coverage of the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup. If you

:01:25. > :01:28.are new to triathlon, you are in for an absolute treat. For those of you

:01:29. > :01:34.familiar with the sport, you will know exactly how eventful mixed

:01:35. > :01:38.relay can be. Oh and Matt Gill who better to enjoy it with a familiar

:01:39. > :01:45.face, and also the double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee. This is

:01:46. > :01:52.new. Good to see you on this side, as far as we're concerned. But he

:01:53. > :01:55.would love to be out here, you had an operation recently? It is great

:01:56. > :02:01.to be here, I would love to be racing. But I had an operation on my

:02:02. > :02:04.hip, to reattach the hamstring. I have been on crutches and in a leg

:02:05. > :02:08.brace for the last month. It is nice to be walking a little bit. It is

:02:09. > :02:12.just one small step on a long road to recovery. Long journey for

:02:13. > :02:19.recovery. Unfortunately for the organisers your brother Johnny has

:02:20. > :02:23.had to pull out as well, ill? He has had a bit of a nightmare year. He

:02:24. > :02:30.pulled out of a view different races through illness and injury. It is

:02:31. > :02:34.tough. You have to realise that a ten year career catches up on you,

:02:35. > :02:39.all of those years can't be perfect. I'm not saying I'm getting old, I am

:02:40. > :02:44.saying Johnny is! If he is at home watching, hi. Annie, the sun is out,

:02:45. > :02:48.we can see the crowd and the athletes getting ready. It's good to

:02:49. > :02:53.be a great day? A really exciting day. The format, it is so fast, it

:02:54. > :02:58.happened so quickly. It's great, we have a phenomenal mix of some

:02:59. > :03:01.top-class athletes, but really young athletes coming through. The

:03:02. > :03:05.international teams have arrived because they don't want to miss out

:03:06. > :03:10.because it is an Olympic sport now. Absolutely. There are 68 athletes

:03:11. > :03:16.taking to the course, four per team. 13 other teams are dotted around the

:03:17. > :03:19.various UK triathlon centres around the country. No Jonny Brownlee,

:03:20. > :03:24.which has meant a bit of rejigging of the teams. However, there are

:03:25. > :03:28.still a number of faces you will recognise. Today they have stripped

:03:29. > :03:32.away their national colours, it is all about representing their region.

:03:33. > :03:41.You can expect it to get a little bit competitive.

:03:42. > :03:47.It's great having a race like this so close to home. We got a really

:03:48. > :03:52.strong team, looking forward to all of the action. A very young and

:03:53. > :03:56.rapid team. For a relay, it puts me in good stead. We have a game for

:03:57. > :04:04.you, you've got to guess who wrote these tweets.

:04:05. > :04:16.That was you! It was a picture of you watching TV! I told you it was

:04:17. > :04:22.you! We are a pretty strong team all around. You know, we have strength

:04:23. > :04:25.in the run. I think, having that in mind, we are one of the teams to

:04:26. > :04:29.watch. I think we are looking forward to an opportunity to take

:04:30. > :04:36.down everybody this weekend. Winter riding is great for the pause.

:04:37. > :04:46.95 likes, quite low? I think this is Matthew. I think so!

:04:47. > :04:55.You had to step into Johnny's shoes, pressure on you to do well? Well, a

:04:56. > :05:03.little bit. You don't want to mess up? No. I've never done one before.

:05:04. > :05:10.Johnny has already let us down, so... Who knows? You mates to go

:05:11. > :05:18.guys were really good mates with team II. This weekend, we aren't.

:05:19. > :05:24.When you go to the fancy dress party as yourself. Your dad went as you?

:05:25. > :05:29.That's really good, as well. You are going to be racing against your

:05:30. > :05:37.girlfriend in Team II, are you out to beat her? Of course! We have an

:05:38. > :05:46.empty seat. Aaron has been moved up to the first team. We now have Mark,

:05:47. > :05:53.my boyfriend. He has flown in from Canada. It would be really good for

:05:54. > :05:59.Team II to beat Team I. I think we are far more evenly matched. We're

:06:00. > :06:18.not talking to Aaron at the. Judas! I had no idea that International

:06:19. > :06:21.Cast A was a thing. So easy! It's going to make me look like a mad cat

:06:22. > :06:28.lady. So the athletes are lining up, they

:06:29. > :06:36.are so close we can almost touch them. By complete affiliation, you

:06:37. > :06:40.have to go with the Leeds team. Without Johnny, it has levelled the

:06:41. > :06:44.playing field? Definitely. On one hand, it is a shame, it makes it

:06:45. > :06:49.less likely they will win. On the other hand, it will make for more

:06:50. > :06:52.interesting racing. I think the Leeds team I and II are going to be

:06:53. > :06:55.quite close. The Australian team and Loughborough are going to be close.

:06:56. > :07:01.I think it is going to hinge on what happens in the earlier legs. It will

:07:02. > :07:06.be interesting watching. We have a full range of British athletes from

:07:07. > :07:10.the juniors, up to the elite. Annie Emmerson, you are picking

:07:11. > :07:14.Loughborough? I am. Having chatted with the athletes come I think they

:07:15. > :07:20.are dark horses. Well, not dark horses because they are right up

:07:21. > :07:30.with the Leeds team. I think Jodie Williams rally them. Ben Dijkstra is

:07:31. > :07:34.a phenomenal athlete. -- Jodie is going to really rally them. These

:07:35. > :07:38.guys have their own opinions, but it won't just be me firing questions at

:07:39. > :07:45.them. Get involved. If you have a question for double Olympic champion

:07:46. > :07:48.Alistair Brownlee, use the hashtag and we will fire those questions at

:07:49. > :07:51.him. If you are still wondering about the details to come about

:07:52. > :07:53.British Triathlon and the Mixed Relay Cup, here is everything you

:07:54. > :08:03.need to know. Each mixed relay team is made up of

:08:04. > :08:08.four people, two women and two men. The women take the first and third

:08:09. > :08:17.legs. They are ready to go! The men take the second and fourth. Every

:08:18. > :08:22.team member must do their own mini triathlon. In Nottingham they will

:08:23. > :08:32.do a 300 metres swim, a 7.5 kilometre bike and finish off with a

:08:33. > :08:38.1500 metre run. Emphatic victory! At the end of each leg, the triathletes

:08:39. > :08:40.waiting to start the next like queue up in the relay exchange zone, as

:08:41. > :08:46.they prepared to make contact with the incoming team-mate. If it

:08:47. > :08:49.happens outside the zone, the team risked disqualification. The next

:08:50. > :08:54.team member gets on his way with a short sprint down the river and a

:08:55. > :08:59.running dive into the water. Spectacle and a bit of showboating!

:09:00. > :09:06.The shorter course and faster racing means small margins for error.

:09:07. > :09:10.Penalty box awaits the Germans. There is no such thing as a dead

:09:11. > :09:14.cert in this event. It is all over for Great Britain. The winning team

:09:15. > :09:17.is the one whose final member crosses the finish line at the

:09:18. > :09:22.bottom of the red carpet first. Expect plenty of thrills and spills

:09:23. > :09:28.before they get there. The Australians are the champions of the

:09:29. > :09:31.world in 2017! So, that is all the details, everything you need to

:09:32. > :09:35.know. With a hop, skip and a jumper, I have made it into the commentary

:09:36. > :09:40.box with Vicky Holland, bronze-medallist from Rio last year.

:09:41. > :09:43.Not competing, another injury, but on the mend. Let's get to strategy,

:09:44. > :09:49.it's very different competing individually, compared to competing

:09:50. > :09:54.with 18. How does it work? A lot of the team tactics will have been

:09:55. > :09:56.decided before the race begins. You often end up putting your strongest

:09:57. > :10:04.swimmer for the girls on the first leg, the stronger bikers on the

:10:05. > :10:07.third leg. A lot of teams with young athletes involved will try to

:10:08. > :10:12.front-load the race. They will put the strongest athletes on legs one

:10:13. > :10:16.and two, hoping to stay in as long as possible. There is going to be

:10:17. > :10:21.pressure as well. You don't want to let your team down? Especially from

:10:22. > :10:27.the more established teams. We have really good youngsters, especially

:10:28. > :10:30.the GB Junior team. They have no pressure, they are ready to go and

:10:31. > :10:35.take some scalps. Vicky, we are looking forward to hearing from you

:10:36. > :10:36.during the race. I will let you get into position. Matt Chilton is

:10:37. > :10:47.getting ready to take things away. Thank you, good afternoon. It is the

:10:48. > :10:51.inaugural British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup, on a beautiful day in

:10:52. > :10:56.Nottingham. The mixed relay is now part of the Olympic programme and

:10:57. > :10:59.will make the Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020. So, the interest and passion

:11:00. > :11:09.surrounding the mixed relay is increasing, year on year. Leeds II.

:11:10. > :11:17.Big names, Non Stanford, Gordon Benson, Lucy Hall and Mark Buckley

:11:18. > :11:22.stepping in at the last minute. The last team that will be presented is

:11:23. > :11:27.Leeds I. Georgia Taylor-Brown, Aaron Royle, Jess Learmonth and Tom

:11:28. > :11:37.Bishop. They are very much alongside the Canadians and the prerace

:11:38. > :11:41.favourites. An Olympic event now, mixed Olympic events have been rare

:11:42. > :11:44.in the past. In Rio there were only nine mixed events. In Tokyo there

:11:45. > :11:52.will be double that, with new events to include swimming, and athletics.

:11:53. > :11:58.And triathlon, of course, which is why we are here today. The Olympic

:11:59. > :12:01.bronze-medallist Vicky Holland is alongside me. I am sure you would

:12:02. > :12:08.rather be racing, but great to have you here. This could be very good? I

:12:09. > :12:11.love the relay, very disappointed not to be out there racing.

:12:12. > :12:16.Unfortunately it is the story of my year. You hit the nail on the head,

:12:17. > :12:22.it will be Fast and Furious. In my opinion it is the best event there

:12:23. > :12:28.is for spectator watching. Individual, mixed with a bit of guys

:12:29. > :12:33.and girls thrown in together, such a good event to watch. Things change

:12:34. > :12:37.so quickly. I think people are in for a real treat, and hopefully

:12:38. > :12:44.those at home watching as well. Nottingham provides this fantastic

:12:45. > :12:48.natural venue for the event. The swim is 300 metres, starting near

:12:49. > :12:59.the Suspension Bridge, a rectangular course in the water. The bike is a

:13:00. > :13:03.7.5 kilometre race, two laps of 3.75 kilometres each, entirely on the

:13:04. > :13:07.Victoria Embankment. The run is a 300-metre affair, crossing the Trent

:13:08. > :13:12.Bridge and the Suspension Bridge. The course is flat and fast, with a

:13:13. > :13:18.sharp climb over the Suspension Bridge at the end of the run. A

:13:19. > :13:24.300-metre swim, a 7.5 kilometre bike, a 1500 metre run. Swimmer,

:13:25. > :13:30.bike, run for all four members of the team. It will be female, male,

:13:31. > :13:34.female, male. It is all shaping up with some of the biggest names in

:13:35. > :13:37.World Triathlon present here in Nottingham. Annie Emmerson has made

:13:38. > :13:44.her way to the commentary position. You have been down with the athletes

:13:45. > :13:47.as the atmosphere rose in the teams? It is fantastic, they are buzzing.

:13:48. > :13:53.Of course, we love the individual racing but there is something really

:13:54. > :13:57.special about the mixed relays. The boys and girls are racing together,

:13:58. > :14:01.but there is a real team thing, camaraderie is fantastic to see.

:14:02. > :14:05.There is a really tribal sort of elements to this, the same way you

:14:06. > :14:08.get with football fans supporting their own team, behind their own

:14:09. > :14:11.team. I think there is something special about racing for the team of

:14:12. > :14:15.the place where Ukraine, where you live or where you are from, as the

:14:16. > :14:18.majority of these athletes are doing. -- the place you train. It

:14:19. > :14:25.adds something unique. This is known as the Nottingham

:14:26. > :14:29.thunderclap, it's the noise that accompanies the introduction of the

:14:30. > :14:34.athletes to begin the race, and the first competitors from each of the

:14:35. > :14:39.17 teams presented individually down onto the starting pontoon. It will

:14:40. > :14:43.be a deepwater start for the first leg. After that they will make the

:14:44. > :14:50.handover and there will be a running dive start for legs two, three and

:14:51. > :14:55.four but it is a deepwater start which provides its own difficulties

:14:56. > :14:59.and technical requirements, Vicky Holland. In elite racing we really

:15:00. > :15:02.do a deepwater start, so this is something that a lot of the

:15:03. > :15:07.experienced athletes will not have done much of and would have done

:15:08. > :15:10.much of this for many years. It is a different type of start, you

:15:11. > :15:16.obviously don't get the propulsion half the pontoon that we normally

:15:17. > :15:20.see. Instead they will line up with a rope in front of them and they

:15:21. > :15:26.won't be able to move beyond that rope until the gun goes and they

:15:27. > :15:29.will do a breaststroke eggbeater, leg kick up as it is called waiting

:15:30. > :15:32.for the gun to go and it's about who has the fastest kick off the start

:15:33. > :15:36.to get themselves ahead of their rivals.

:15:37. > :15:41.Now they are swimming in the River Trent, which has some strong

:15:42. > :15:48.currents which need to be considered to. It's the third longest river in

:15:49. > :15:52.the UK, 185 miles. The source is high up in Staffordshire and flows

:15:53. > :16:06.through Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, Burton on Trent, Newark on Trent

:16:07. > :16:11.before it joins the river Oose and flows into the Humber Estuary. The

:16:12. > :16:20.swimmers are having to fight against it ready for the start now. It is a

:16:21. > :16:30.four leg mixed triathlon relay, 300 metres swim, 7.5 kilometres on the

:16:31. > :16:35.bike, 15 kilometre run to conclude. The first-ever Accenture triathlon

:16:36. > :16:38.Mixed Relay Cup is under way in Nottingham. On the first leg you

:16:39. > :16:44.need to look out for Sophie Coldwell, she is our likely leader,

:16:45. > :16:49.a very strong swimmer. A good all-round athlete now, she has done

:16:50. > :16:52.very well to step into the U23 and senior ranks with a fourth place

:16:53. > :16:57.this year already at the World Triathlon Series. Her swim pedigree

:16:58. > :17:07.is of such a high standard that I think she is our likely natural

:17:08. > :17:09.leader. It's interesting the Leeds I and Team II putting Georgia

:17:10. > :17:14.Taylor-Brown and Non Stanford putting out their swimmers as the

:17:15. > :17:17.first swimmers. It's been an interesting choice. You have to look

:17:18. > :17:24.at the Loughborough team won between Dummett versus Leeds Team I and Team

:17:25. > :17:27.II, they have put in opposite tactics, Loughborough put in their

:17:28. > :17:33.strongest swimmer on the first leg, whereas Leeds have their strongest

:17:34. > :17:37.swimmers on the third leg. I guess they have done that because those

:17:38. > :17:41.girls are stronger on the bike as well, so they are hoping that if the

:17:42. > :17:45.race has started to spread out, or if they find themselves a little bit

:17:46. > :17:48.behind they will be able to use those girls and their strength on

:17:49. > :17:51.the bike to get back into the race. We must mention Non Stanford, who

:17:52. > :17:57.has been out for the best part of the year. The first time back

:17:58. > :18:00.racing. This is going to be really tough for her, because it's almost

:18:01. > :18:04.like a different engine system needed for this short style of

:18:05. > :18:08.racing. Non Stanford is a bit nervous about starting back in,

:18:09. > :18:12.getting back in there. With a lot of the Juniors who will be out for some

:18:13. > :18:16.blood. It is a really good opportunity for the youngsters to

:18:17. > :18:20.mix it with the senior girls, the more established girls, and she

:18:21. > :18:28.knows they will be after her. This is a really good race to try and

:18:29. > :18:31.sharpen those skills. She is going to be in Rotterdam in two weeks'

:18:32. > :18:33.time at the grand final, so just get the little things right, the

:18:34. > :18:36.transition skills, technical stuff on the bike, being in a group on the

:18:37. > :18:41.bike in the pack, all of those things will be good for her. It is

:18:42. > :18:45.Sophie Coldwell who is out at the front swimming the first leg for a

:18:46. > :18:49.Loughborough I, she will be joined in the team by Chris Perham, Jodie

:18:50. > :18:55.Stimpson, her regular on the World Triathlon Series, and Ben Dijkstra

:18:56. > :18:59.from Loughborough. He is a very talented all-rounder. They are

:19:00. > :19:03.approaching the end of the first swim. There will be four of these,

:19:04. > :19:09.remember, they will exit the water and pick up their bikes for the two

:19:10. > :19:13.laps to conclude the 7.5 kilometre bike and 1500 metre run and then the

:19:14. > :19:23.changeover. It's going to be action packed here this afternoon. Team

:19:24. > :19:28.Japan, 18 years of age, giving Coldwell a run for her money in the

:19:29. > :19:31.first leg. She certainly is, she recently won the Asian

:19:32. > :19:35.championships, she is a young athlete, only 18 years of age. This

:19:36. > :19:41.is probably going to be the best part of the triathlon, the swim,

:19:42. > :19:44.she's going to have a hard time on the bike, staying with the likes of

:19:45. > :19:49.Sophie Coldwell. The let's wait and see what happens as they begin to

:19:50. > :19:52.exit the water. The first swim is just about done. They have to get

:19:53. > :20:03.out of the wet suits and get everything done neatly and tidily in

:20:04. > :20:09.transition. Sega of Japan, Coldwell of Great Britain, up they come to

:20:10. > :20:16.their bikes. All of the bikes are parked there. There are 17 groups of

:20:17. > :20:20.four bikes parked together, Japan Loughborough I, GB U23 with Sian

:20:21. > :20:25.Rainsley in good shape, kind of going well, Jenny Manners swimming

:20:26. > :20:34.and biking and running the first leg for Cardiff, Leeds II, leads one in

:20:35. > :20:38.ninth, it is a 7.5 kilometre bike for the first triathletes in this

:20:39. > :20:42.Accenture British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup, they are on their way.

:20:43. > :20:46.Sophie Coldwell must work hard in the early stages of the bike to

:20:47. > :20:55.manage to stay away from Leeds I and Leeds II, Georgia Taylor-Brown and

:20:56. > :20:59.Non Stanford. She went away with the world number one, so she's capable

:21:00. > :21:03.of going alone if she wants to. Absolutely, she is in second

:21:04. > :21:06.position on the bike so she hasn't had a fantastic transition, still

:21:07. > :21:09.has time to make upon our leader. What I noticed through transition

:21:10. > :21:15.that was interesting is both the Leeds I and Leeds II swimmers didn't

:21:16. > :21:19.have the greatest of swims, Taylor-Brown and Non Stanford are

:21:20. > :21:23.distinctly mid-pack, so they have work to do. Felucca Sega from Japan,

:21:24. > :21:28.the 18-year-old, glancing over her shoulder, she's had a sensational

:21:29. > :21:33.start to her leg in the triathlon but there is a group forming behind

:21:34. > :21:39.trying to close her down -- Lukas Hejda. Coldwell has taken Sega in

:21:40. > :21:42.her own position, right in front of the grandstand she overtook her,

:21:43. > :21:47.beneath the magnificent war memorial, hence the war of -- of

:21:48. > :21:52.approval from those in the grandstand. The difficulty for the

:21:53. > :21:55.likes of Sophie Coldwell is the athletes she is riding with, she may

:21:56. > :21:59.not be that familiar with them. For that reason she doesn't know how

:22:00. > :22:04.they will go, should she work with them try and go it alone. We can see

:22:05. > :22:07.the chase pack looking ominous in the background. Sophie is a

:22:08. > :22:12.phenomenal rider. What I know of Fuka Sega is we all raced against

:22:13. > :22:17.her in Chengdu in a World Cup race earlier this year and she made the

:22:18. > :22:20.front group as a phenomenal swimmer and she demonstrated today but

:22:21. > :22:24.didn't do any work on the bike, she sat at the back and her run is not

:22:25. > :22:29.up to scratch, compared to a lot of the girls in the race. Tricky turn,

:22:30. > :22:32.we saw one or two of them going down on the bike, familiarisation, so

:22:33. > :22:35.they have learned their lessons. The course is dry, there is no water on

:22:36. > :22:39.the track and they have come through the first out and back safely and

:22:40. > :22:43.up, the first group numbering about a dozen. The next pack is

:22:44. > :22:48.approaching the turn. The athletes have talked about the fact that this

:22:49. > :22:51.bike circuit is tricky, it's very technical, and it's going to be very

:22:52. > :22:55.hard work for some of the less experienced athletes, that's for

:22:56. > :23:00.sure. The second pack has joined with different pack. A reasonably

:23:01. > :23:04.sized pack, around half the field there. More and more of those girls

:23:05. > :23:11.made it into the pack now. That was a joining of the group that includes

:23:12. > :23:14.Non Stanford and Georgia Taylor-Brown, so Leeds Team I and

:23:15. > :23:16.Team II have made it into the group with Loughborough and it plays into

:23:17. > :23:23.the hands of Leeds, they have obviously saved their swim- bike

:23:24. > :23:26.specialists for the third leg. That said, Loughborough I have Jodie

:23:27. > :23:29.Stimpson and we saw what she's capable of last weekend in

:23:30. > :23:33.Stockholm, especially on the bike that she has so worked so hard on

:23:34. > :23:37.the summer. I fancy the Canadian team to do well, they are full of

:23:38. > :23:39.confidence as well, as you may have seen in the interview prerace. John

:23:40. > :23:45.Brown has moved into leadership of the contest, joined by match-up,

:23:46. > :23:47.Paula Findlay and Jeremy Briand, four established World Triathlon

:23:48. > :23:52.Series races and the Canadians could be a force to be reckoned with this

:23:53. > :23:57.afternoon. They certainly could be, Joanna Brown is really coming to

:23:58. > :24:00.Heron. In the last two races on the World Triathlon Series, Montreal and

:24:01. > :24:04.Edmondson, she finished fourth in both races, massive step up for her,

:24:05. > :24:07.so Joanna Brown is a great threat, she is a great runner, she comes

:24:08. > :24:11.from a running background and in this pack she is well placed to do

:24:12. > :24:16.well in a first leg on the mixed relay is. I think you are right,

:24:17. > :24:21.Canada are a to definitely watch. Joanna Brown is strongest athlete in

:24:22. > :24:24.that team at the moment with the two fourth-place is recently on the

:24:25. > :24:27.World Series. She has also had a couple of podiums on the World Cup

:24:28. > :24:32.series this year already as well. She is definitely somebody to watch.

:24:33. > :24:39.Sophia Green of sterling has picked up a ten second penalty, no word as

:24:40. > :24:51.to what that is for but SN second penalty for her. If you have

:24:52. > :24:55.questions for Alistair Brownlee command Vicky Holland, get the

:24:56. > :24:58.questions in using #BBC triathlon and we will try and get through as

:24:59. > :25:04.many of them as we can with Ore Oduba Bowe after the race. Some of

:25:05. > :25:07.the athletes asking for some of the other athletes to come through. They

:25:08. > :25:13.don't want to be caught from behind by the chasing pack. This looks like

:25:14. > :25:16.it is Non Stanford, great to see her racing. We talked about the fact she

:25:17. > :25:23.has not raced all year but this will be hard work for her but she is such

:25:24. > :25:27.a champion, 2012 U23 champion, 2013 senior champion and fourth in the

:25:28. > :25:30.Olympics, great athlete, great to see her back racing. Non Stanford

:25:31. > :25:34.will not be afraid to work this hard, won't be afraid to take her

:25:35. > :25:41.turns and make it as hard as she wants to come it won't matter that

:25:42. > :25:44.it is sapping her own legs, she needs to get the cobwebs blown out

:25:45. > :25:47.ahead of the race in two weeks' time in Rotterdam. 11 teams together at

:25:48. > :25:53.the front, Georgia Taylor-Brown representing Leeds I, Non Stanford

:25:54. > :25:58.for Leeds II Sophie Coldwell from Loughborough, one of the big names.

:25:59. > :26:02.Somebody else taking it up now and injecting pace into the race. That

:26:03. > :26:07.is Team Bath at the front that I'm excited to see, that's my team these

:26:08. > :26:13.days. If I was able to race I would be in there now so I'm excited to

:26:14. > :26:17.see them mixing it up. Megan McDonald from team that from

:26:18. > :26:21.Leamington spa, at the front in the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup.

:26:22. > :26:26.We have talked about the fact the mixed relays is now in the Olympics,

:26:27. > :26:28.it will be in Tokyo 2020, such exciting news fools of the great

:26:29. > :26:34.thing about Nottingham and the mixed relay is here are it is giving the

:26:35. > :26:38.athletes a great chance to race with some of their heroes. It is a great

:26:39. > :26:42.thing they are coming at a race with some of the senior athletes and as

:26:43. > :26:46.we have said before, some of them fancy themselves over the shorter

:26:47. > :26:49.distances. They do race these shorter differences more often and

:26:50. > :26:54.frequently than the senior athletes, so I think there will be some strong

:26:55. > :26:57.performances from the youngsters. Serious move happening from Joanna

:26:58. > :27:01.Brown, the 24-year-old Canadian has moved into the front, past the war

:27:02. > :27:11.memorial and the packed grandstands. 11 teams together. Eyesore Non

:27:12. > :27:14.Stanford really take it on around the U-turn. She accelerated. It was

:27:15. > :27:19.her and Georgia Taylor-Brown and Sophie Coldwell that really started

:27:20. > :27:22.to make a bit of a gap before the Canadian Joanna Brown brought the

:27:23. > :27:27.rest of the pack back on. We heard about the penalty for Sofia Green,

:27:28. > :27:31.it was for kit outside the box. When you come into transition at the end

:27:32. > :27:35.of the swim you must make sure your wet suit and goggles go into the box

:27:36. > :27:39.and that didn't happen for the team and hence the penalty, that's the

:27:40. > :27:41.reason why they have that stop-go penalty which they will take later

:27:42. > :27:45.but I don't think they were ever going to be in serious contention.

:27:46. > :27:49.The difficulty for some of the younger athletes is their brains

:27:50. > :27:52.will be working so fast and some of them will be out of their depths and

:27:53. > :27:56.they are not used to be strict rules that the ITU set and we know that

:27:57. > :28:00.you need all of your comment inside the box on the bikes and we have

:28:01. > :28:04.seen it quite often on the series. It happens to the best of us in the

:28:05. > :28:08.senior ranks and Sofia is one of the younger athletes so she won't be as

:28:09. > :28:11.used to doing that as some of the more experienced athletes. I'm sure

:28:12. > :28:15.she will not make that mistake to many more times. Joanna Brown

:28:16. > :28:19.forcing the pace for Canada, shall handover after her run to mash up

:28:20. > :28:26.who will hand onto multiple triathlon series winner Paula

:28:27. > :28:31.Findlay. Jimmy Briand will be running the anchor leg for Canada,

:28:32. > :28:35.the most dumb least experienced of the four, so their weakest athlete

:28:36. > :28:40.is going last. We will see if that gamble pays off or comes back to

:28:41. > :28:42.bite. What we know about Chris Perham who is going to take over

:28:43. > :28:48.from Sophie Coldwell? He is the young athlete who will be coming

:28:49. > :28:53.through when Sophie hangs up her bike. We know he is a strong run

:28:54. > :28:56.about what we know about him? He is a pretty good all-round athlete,

:28:57. > :29:01.Chris. Somebody who has developed well over the last couple of years.

:29:02. > :29:06.He was in the World Junior Championships in Edmonton in 2014

:29:07. > :29:13.when he came 15th, sorry, 2015 where he came 14th, in Chicago he raced as

:29:14. > :29:17.an U23, 2015 and he was 20th. He has some good results behind him now,

:29:18. > :29:20.becoming a more established senior athlete, so he will round off what

:29:21. > :29:25.is already a strong team for Loughborough.

:29:26. > :29:32.So, the brakes on for the next turn. One or two of them got a little

:29:33. > :29:36.close to the Nottingham banners and the metal railings. It is a little

:29:37. > :29:40.bit wider wrap that turn than at the other end of the course, which is

:29:41. > :29:43.much tighter. Now they start to think about the conclusion of the

:29:44. > :29:48.run, 7.5 kilometres. The last leg will be a 1500 metre run, a single

:29:49. > :29:52.lap which takes them to both sides of the river. They cross the

:29:53. > :30:02.Suspension Bridge and the River Trent. There is a really tough climb

:30:03. > :30:07.to concluded. Going really nicely, Joanna Brown from Canada. She just

:30:08. > :30:15.gave a nudge to say, come on, Non, come through. But she said, I'm OK,

:30:16. > :30:19.thanks! I think it is a good position for Non. You can see the

:30:20. > :30:23.straps on her shoes are already and am. Being in second position when

:30:24. > :30:26.you want to take off your shoes is a good position, it means you can

:30:27. > :30:30.search through and get into the best possible position for transition. It

:30:31. > :30:34.has been overcast for the first 12 minutes of the triathlon, but the

:30:35. > :30:39.sun is beating down. They are happy to be under the shade of the trees

:30:40. > :30:42.in the Victoria Embankment Park area in Nottingham. Coming towards the

:30:43. > :30:49.end of the bike. Joanna Brown, number four, swimming, biting and

:30:50. > :30:54.running the first leg for Canada. Non Stanford, Georgia Taylor-Brown,

:30:55. > :30:58.Fuka Sega, first out of the water for Japan. Sophie Coldwell, a lot of

:30:59. > :31:04.established triathlon names in there as they prepare for the arrival.

:31:05. > :31:09.Brown, glancing over her shoulder. You need to be clear of trouble, but

:31:10. > :31:11.not too far away, everything is deficient in transition. They call

:31:12. > :31:21.the transition the fourth discipline because it is practised and again.

:31:22. > :31:24.Brown, resting on top of her shoes. That gives Non Stanford opportunity

:31:25. > :31:30.to burst through. She wants to be first at the best man. Non Stanford

:31:31. > :31:40.for Leeds. She is first into transition, former world champion.

:31:41. > :31:45.She hands over to Gordon Benson, Brown needs to get into transition.

:31:46. > :31:55.She can't let Stanford make the most of that lead. Fuka Sega, struggling.

:31:56. > :31:59.Non Stanford is joined by Georgia Taylor-Brown on the way out of

:32:00. > :32:07.transition. Our two favourites for the race, Leeds II and Leeds I are

:32:08. > :32:10.doing really well. Nice to see Non so smooth. She hasn't had the

:32:11. > :32:15.opportunity to race and do the speedy transitions. I would give

:32:16. > :32:19.that 110 out of ten. She did it with a lot of pressure, a lot of people

:32:20. > :32:22.around her. There is no room for slip-ups at this level, this fast

:32:23. > :32:29.and the is. She had to do every thing smoothly and she did that. The

:32:30. > :32:36.only girl in front of her is Kate Waugh, the current European junior

:32:37. > :32:41.champion. Renowned for her running strength. Yes, she is 18 years of

:32:42. > :32:44.age and from Gateshead and she is running shoulder to shoulder with

:32:45. > :32:48.the former world champion, Non Stanford. These two has stolen two

:32:49. > :32:54.or three seconds over the next best. It will be adjusting to see, even

:32:55. > :32:58.though Non does not have race fitness, how happy she is to sit

:32:59. > :33:03.with a young junior athlete. We can see her starting to pump the arms

:33:04. > :33:09.and pull forward. Non is renowned as being a front runner, she likes to

:33:10. > :33:16.be in the front, with a pack or off the front of the race. Not surprised

:33:17. > :33:20.to see her stepping in front of Kate Waugh. It will be great experience

:33:21. > :33:24.for her. She needs to stick onto her shoulder as well she can, it will

:33:25. > :33:29.really help her development, running with the stars. Both Loughborough

:33:30. > :33:35.teams are involved Olivia Matthaus is a local girl from

:33:36. > :33:39.Nottinghamshire. The River Trent flows through her hometown. She

:33:40. > :33:43.feels very much at home a Stanford tries to stretch their lead. There

:33:44. > :33:47.are four others within striking distance as they cross the bridge.

:33:48. > :33:51.That his Georgia Taylor-Brown, running on the outside of the

:33:52. > :33:53.chasing pack. I would not be surprised to see her bridging onto

:33:54. > :34:01.those front two, maybe even bringing the front two with her. She is

:34:02. > :34:04.probably the strongest in the race of pure run pedigree. I am not too

:34:05. > :34:15.surprised to see her closing the gap down. Joanna Brown, this is usually

:34:16. > :34:19.her strength, the run. But she was in Stockholm just six days ago. The

:34:20. > :34:23.Canadian athlete struggling a little bit on the run, which is usually her

:34:24. > :34:27.strength. Non Stanford pushing on and breaking away. As you rightly

:34:28. > :34:31.said, I can just see Georgia Taylor-Brown, I think I can take her

:34:32. > :34:36.out. She is coming through into second place. The 23-year-old from

:34:37. > :34:42.Manchester moving past Kate Waugh and into second position. She has

:34:43. > :34:51.her eyes on Non Stanford ahead of her. Coldwell is about to go past

:34:52. > :35:05.past Kate Waugh of. Georgia is renowned for her ability

:35:06. > :35:08.to pick up the pace as she goes through the race. She doesn't start

:35:09. > :35:12.too fast and he is but she seems to wind it up. We are seeing that

:35:13. > :35:17.again, with her stretching that lead as they come towards the end of the

:35:18. > :35:20.run. It always requires a bit of discipline. It is easy to go hell

:35:21. > :35:26.for leather out of transition. Georgia is really pulling away, a

:35:27. > :35:30.big Apple forming. Georgia Taylor-Brown will come ironically,

:35:31. > :35:35.hand over to Non Stanford's boyfriend, Aaron Royle. Georgia

:35:36. > :35:39.Taylor-Brown will hand over to Aaron Royle, Non Stanford will hand over

:35:40. > :35:46.to Gordon Benson for Leeds II. That will happen shortly. After 19 and a

:35:47. > :35:50.quarter minutes of the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup, the first

:35:51. > :35:57.event of its kind to be held in the country, the first leg will conclude

:35:58. > :36:00.shortly. They have a stiff climb, almost when you thought you were out

:36:01. > :36:04.of energy. Uphill across the Suspension Bridge. These are

:36:05. > :36:09.spectacular pictures from on high. Beautiful scenery that we have

:36:10. > :36:13.today, a really good setting. The course as well, for spectators here,

:36:14. > :36:17.they can say virtually all of it. You never really lose sight of the

:36:18. > :36:21.athletes for too long. Not only is it a great spectator event at home

:36:22. > :36:25.on television, you can see the athletes virtually the whole time.

:36:26. > :36:31.It makes such good viewing. It really does. A 1500 metre runner

:36:32. > :36:35.coming to a conclusion just now. Georgia Taylor-Brown is going to

:36:36. > :36:41.hand over to Aaron Royle. They are lined up in their wet suits ready

:36:42. > :36:44.for stage two. Taylor-Brown, Aaron Royle on his way, down the steep

:36:45. > :36:49.ramp and ready for the flying start. Let's pick him up, the Australian,

:36:50. > :36:55.out into the Trent. Not the best dive he has never performed! He will

:36:56. > :37:00.not want to see that again in the replay, but he has a decent lead.

:37:01. > :37:03.Aaron Royle on his way for Leeds I. Being a strong swimmer, he will

:37:04. > :37:08.probably take this out so they can't get to them. Let's go down to

:37:09. > :37:13.Riverside and join Ore with Alistair Brownlee.

:37:14. > :37:22.Thank you, yes, we have just taken our position by the changeover. It

:37:23. > :37:25.is frenetic, isn't it? For the guys here waiting, they have got to wait

:37:26. > :37:36.a patient game, they can't go before they are tagged. Yes, you have to

:37:37. > :37:40.make sure you handover between two lines, bits of tape on the ground.

:37:41. > :37:47.You can get disqualified for handing over at the wrong time. Like in an

:37:48. > :37:52.athletics really. I have that in the Commonwealth is. It's important to

:37:53. > :37:55.get that right. Looking for Georgia Taylor-Brown and Non Stanford. You

:37:56. > :38:03.just said to Gordon Benson as he was lining up, race clever. Why? Georgia

:38:04. > :38:12.had a great leg. Physically, she is really talented. We have a position

:38:13. > :38:18.now where the Leeds Team I, with Aaron who is a great swimmer, and

:38:19. > :38:21.Gordon, behind a Canadian, he could work to bring him back, but he could

:38:22. > :38:26.also be in a powerful position on his own, allowing other people to do

:38:27. > :38:33.the work and then trying to get to Aaron to push the race on. If that

:38:34. > :38:38.happens, and Leeds I and II are on their own at the front, that is the

:38:39. > :38:41.perfect scenario, which you can do with some clever tactics. Still

:38:42. > :38:45.Leeds through and through! More strategy to watch.

:38:46. > :39:02.Thank you, Ore. Aaron Royle leads for Leeds I. Gordon Benson for Leeds

:39:03. > :39:10.II is further down the course. Chris Perham has been given a decent

:39:11. > :39:14.position. Adam Bowden, the 35-year-old veteran, he is doing the

:39:15. > :39:19.second leg for Cardiff. Marc Austin for Stirling I is in the water

:39:20. > :39:22.somewhere, having been given a changeover from Iona Miller. The

:39:23. > :39:30.17-year-old from Glasgow. Marc Austin with work to do. We are

:39:31. > :39:33.alongside the race leader, it is Leeds I, with Aaron Royle swimming

:39:34. > :39:37.towards the conclusion of his 300-metre stretch. We got a couple

:39:38. > :39:47.of splits with the bottom team, never 17, it is Team Stirling II.

:39:48. > :39:51.Lost quite a bit of time. The top seven teams are within 27 seconds of

:39:52. > :39:55.each other. With the mixed relays, what we have learned previously is

:39:56. > :39:58.that a lot can happen. You think a team has broken away, but Aaron

:39:59. > :40:02.Royle is out there on his owner doesn't have anyone to work with.

:40:03. > :40:08.There is a little group of talented athletes ten seconds behind him now.

:40:09. > :40:13.The Stirling time is affected by the fact they has to take the penalty,

:40:14. > :40:20.Sofia Green did not get her equipment into the box at the end of

:40:21. > :40:24.the first transition. Aaron Royle, the Australian, swimming, biking and

:40:25. > :40:29.running for Leeds I. Approaching transition now. He has kept his lead

:40:30. > :40:37.intact. The next couple are not too far behind. Those were the four

:40:38. > :40:45.Leeds bikes. He has to get out of his wet suit and get all of his

:40:46. > :40:52.equipment in the box. Leeds I, followed by Canada. GB under 23 are

:40:53. > :40:57.having a great race. They are with Calum Johnson, swimming, biking and

:40:58. > :41:01.running the second leg. Leeds I with Aaron Royle, leading them out of

:41:02. > :41:06.transition. He begins his 7.5 kilometre bike ride. I just saw the

:41:07. > :41:14.GB Juniors, just a little bit off the pack. He is a really talented

:41:15. > :41:20.athlete, but I think this front group might be too strong for him.

:41:21. > :41:24.Aaron Royle, happy to be on his own, making the first tight turn, as he

:41:25. > :41:27.tries to stretch his lead. He had a little look down the road to see

:41:28. > :41:37.where the next placed triathletes are. It is either the Canadian or

:41:38. > :41:42.Japan. Ryousuke Maeda for Japan, doing the second leg for the

:41:43. > :41:49.Japanese team. Roaring now, heading to the war memorial for Australia's

:41:50. > :41:53.Aaron Royle. Taking position for Team Leeds I. We saw him coming

:41:54. > :41:58.through the commentary box and he is absolutely flying. He's not taking

:41:59. > :42:01.any prisoners and has stolen a march through transition. He is used to

:42:02. > :42:04.doing that thing, having been in many breakaway packs with Alistair

:42:05. > :42:07.and Johnny over the years, he's very used to coming out of the swimming

:42:08. > :42:10.and getting straight into the riding without holding up waiting for

:42:11. > :42:13.anybody. The other three lads seem to have taken a moment to get into

:42:14. > :42:27.the riding. Like this, so fast and the time. Of course, 7.5

:42:28. > :42:30.kilometres, he can hang on for that. He's not thinking I've got 40, he's

:42:31. > :42:39.only got 7.5 minutes. What are we looking at for 7.5 kilometres? About

:42:40. > :42:44.ten. So we have Gordon Benson, the other Leeds athlete. Mash-up, and

:42:45. > :42:48.that is Chris Perham. We have our favourites.

:42:49. > :42:55.Out of the saddle, trying to get extra acceleration, as Aaron Royle

:42:56. > :42:59.heads back to the start finish line. This has been a sensational

:43:00. > :43:04.performance so far. He was given a narrow lead, but he stretched it

:43:05. > :43:07.magnificently, Vicky Holland? On the swimmer, it wasn't that much of a

:43:08. > :43:12.surprise. Matthew Sharpe, who led the rest of them through, he

:43:13. > :43:17.recently won the World Championships, he is a very strong

:43:18. > :43:22.swimmer and runner. Not surprised to see him maintaining that gap through

:43:23. > :43:31.the swim. Aaron has really gone for it, he is not waiting for those guys

:43:32. > :43:36.to catch up. There is no Leeds tactics, it is Leeds I for

:43:37. > :43:40.themselves. I'm not too impressed with the way they are working with

:43:41. > :43:43.each other. They should literally be pulling through and then the next

:43:44. > :43:49.athlete pulling through to keep the train really rolling. They are not

:43:50. > :43:52.really working together. Even getting the visual on Arran, he is

:43:53. > :43:58.definitely moving faster than they are at a three, and they should be

:43:59. > :44:04.able to bring him back a little bit. If they do, they will gain that

:44:05. > :44:08.ground back. He could see the distance he has gathered. The others

:44:09. > :44:13.are heading in the opposite direction. He can add a couple of

:44:14. > :44:18.more seconds to the official lead. Aaron Royle, in sensational form.

:44:19. > :44:21.Swimming, biking and running for Leeds I. Set up well by Georgia

:44:22. > :44:25.Taylor-Brown, absolutely shattered after the end of her effort. The

:44:26. > :44:36.23-year-old from Manchester was lying on her back, gulping in lungs

:44:37. > :44:39.of oxygen. Aaron Brown is capitalising on the lead and going

:44:40. > :44:44.further and further away. I think Aaron is starting to feel quite at

:44:45. > :44:48.home. He has been spending a lot of time in Leeds with his girlfriend,

:44:49. > :44:52.Non Stanford. He moved at the beginning of the year, they spent

:44:53. > :44:58.some time in Australia as well. Best of both worlds, having a home on the

:44:59. > :45:00.Gold Coast, and then also having a home in Leeds. They make the most of

:45:01. > :45:07.having both environments. Match-up in the middle, the

:45:08. > :45:15.Canadian, he is an established triathlon World Series competitor.

:45:16. > :45:19.Alongside the Brownlee Brothers, a very decent triathlete, the utility

:45:20. > :45:26.rider to help the Brownlee Brothers. They got gold and silver in Rio. The

:45:27. > :45:30.man who we know less about is Chris Perham, just 22 years of age, he is

:45:31. > :45:35.from Portland in Dorset and he is currently in a share of second

:45:36. > :45:40.position. It is this man, Aaron Royle, who leads. Really impressed

:45:41. > :45:48.with his performance, a former world U23 champion, he won in the same

:45:49. > :45:52.year as Non Stanford, don't know if that is connected to what happened

:45:53. > :45:56.subsequently. He is also a phenomenal swim bike and has a

:45:57. > :46:00.decent run. He had a few injuries this season so started the season

:46:01. > :46:04.late but he's looking in fantastic form. Aaron has been improving race

:46:05. > :46:08.on race, he started the season late, injury knocked him back. Also with

:46:09. > :46:12.the change of environment and training setup, it takes time to get

:46:13. > :46:15.used to that, to train a different way, and he's doing a lot more

:46:16. > :46:23.volume. I'm not surprised to see him getting a little more used to it

:46:24. > :46:29.now. He was neither in Stockholm last week. Ore Oduba is with former

:46:30. > :46:34.world champion Non Stanford. Non Stanford, fresh from your super

:46:35. > :46:38.Sprint, how does it feel running down the bank? The swim and the bike

:46:39. > :46:40.was fine, I went off on the ride and felt controlled but I haven't done

:46:41. > :46:46.much running so it definitely caught up with me, and Georgia came past

:46:47. > :46:49.and I had to hang on with what I had. It was really good fun and it

:46:50. > :46:56.is over within the blink of an eye sown -- no time to think. Non

:46:57. > :47:01.Stanford catching her breath, back with her boyfriend Aaron Royle who

:47:02. > :47:03.leads this competition. The pace he is putting in on the bike was

:47:04. > :47:08.quicker than we have seen from Gordon Benson, match-up and Chris

:47:09. > :47:13.Perham. I caught a glimpse of the chasing group of three, Benson is

:47:14. > :47:18.cruising in without putting in too much effort -- Matt Sharp. Royle has

:47:19. > :47:22.done all of this work on his own and still has a 1500 metre runner to

:47:23. > :47:27.come, Vicky Holland, can he maintain the lead during the run? Aaron is a

:47:28. > :47:34.classy runner and I think he can. As I said, he is improving week, his

:47:35. > :47:38.form is getting better and better, these guys may have conserved a bit

:47:39. > :47:42.more energy if they were more savvy. Maybeme I have that bit extra when

:47:43. > :47:46.it comes to the run. Aaron has a decent gap now so I think he will

:47:47. > :47:58.hold on. Looking down the list to see who he has got in his team, he

:47:59. > :48:05.has John Bishop, the runner-up to Javier Gomez. Leeds I have given

:48:06. > :48:11.themselves a massive lead halfway through this leg and it is courtesy

:48:12. > :48:16.of a superb effort from Aaron Royle. Georgia Taylor-Brown had a fantastic

:48:17. > :48:19.leg as well but this Leeds I team that were the favourites going into

:48:20. > :48:23.this race are really holding their own and showing they are just a

:48:24. > :48:27.little bit better than the rest. It is no coincidence they were ranked

:48:28. > :48:30.number one. They were the number one because of the calibre of the

:48:31. > :48:37.athletes in the team. It is shelling already. I look at it as if Aaron

:48:38. > :48:41.can hold onto this gap, passing on to Jess Learmonth, she is the best

:48:42. > :48:45.swim bike are possibly in the whole sport so handing over to her I don't

:48:46. > :48:47.think she will get caught, especially after that silver in

:48:48. > :48:52.Stockholm last weekend. I have spoken to her in the last day or so

:48:53. > :48:56.and she is tired and finds that the race hit her harder than she

:48:57. > :49:01.expected, and also coming down from altitude can put you into a slump,

:49:02. > :49:13.just being really heavy and tired. She's not

:49:14. > :49:18.feeling at her best but you know she is going to get up for this and be

:49:19. > :49:21.excited because it is the relay. She said at the beginning she has never

:49:22. > :49:24.done a relay before so it is something she has been keen to do

:49:25. > :49:27.and being out front I think she will deliver for the team. It might be a

:49:28. > :49:30.shock to the system for Jess who got second place in Stockholm just under

:49:31. > :49:33.a week ago, on a very tough course so we expect jest to be a little

:49:34. > :49:36.tired but the racing is really short and it is as much to do with your

:49:37. > :49:39.body as it is with your mind over this short distance today. Yeah,

:49:40. > :49:41.when you have to back up into the relay sometimes your body feels a

:49:42. > :49:44.bit tired but you find something else. It's for the team. There is a

:49:45. > :49:46.sort of tribal aspect to it where you really want to perform for your

:49:47. > :49:50.team-mates, the people you train with and live with on a day-to-day

:49:51. > :49:54.basis. I think even the athletes who are a bit tired, some of them raced

:49:55. > :50:00.in Stockholm and some of the Juniors raised on Monday at the World Junior

:50:01. > :50:04.Championships qualifying so some of them Havret raced even more recently

:50:05. > :50:08.than the guys in Stockholm. With the chasing group under the shade of the

:50:09. > :50:11.trees alongside the River Trent, everything looks splendid in

:50:12. > :50:17.Nottingham city centre this afternoon. Aaron Royle is heading in

:50:18. > :50:20.the opposite direction. He had a chance to see the guys sharing

:50:21. > :50:28.second position, the team members of Leeds II and Loughborough I, and

:50:29. > :50:33.Canada but it is Royle who will shortly hang up his bike and set

:50:34. > :50:37.sail on his 1500 metre run to conclude. A single lap takes him to

:50:38. > :50:41.both sides of the River Trent over the two bridges, and he is preparing

:50:42. > :50:45.for the arrival in transition now. He doesn't have to rush, his lead is

:50:46. > :50:51.significant, it's been strengthened ever since he set out on his 7.5

:50:52. > :50:55.kilometre bike. He arrives at the dismount line now, steps off,

:50:56. > :51:00.perfect timing for Aaron Royle command of the soft carpet

:51:01. > :51:03.underfoot, looks for his position in transition, the next three are at

:51:04. > :51:08.the dismount line in the background of that shot now but there is no

:51:09. > :51:12.need for Aaron Royle to panic. He can get his shoes on, leave his

:51:13. > :51:18.helmet behind, while the others have yet to park their bikes he is away,

:51:19. > :51:24.Aaron Royle strikes out on his 1500 metre single lap on the run to

:51:25. > :51:33.conclude the second leg for Leeds I. Leeds I, 34 minutes and 20 seconds.

:51:34. > :51:37.Leeds II 12 seconds down, Canada and Loughborough in the same timing

:51:38. > :51:43.sequence, leaving transition with GB Juniors next in line. Well, I was

:51:44. > :51:49.going to say that I think Aaron may have lost a couple of seconds in the

:51:50. > :51:53.closing kilometre or so, those final three have maybe brought him back in

:51:54. > :51:57.a little and they do have quality runners, Matthew Sharpe is a good

:51:58. > :52:02.runner, Chris Perham raced for GB U23 and Junior and Gordon Benson,

:52:03. > :52:07.who is an Olympian, all three of those guys can run. Chris Perham has

:52:08. > :52:10.a good running pedigree, he races really well over cross-country, he

:52:11. > :52:13.has an fast times over five kilometres and three kilometres,

:52:14. > :52:17.young athlete, very inexperienced but finds himself in a really good

:52:18. > :52:25.position, and Aaron Royle striding out, hasn't quite found his running

:52:26. > :52:27.lakes this year but I think he should hold his own over the 1500

:52:28. > :52:31.metres, pretty short, what are we looking at? Around four minutes. 4.5

:52:32. > :52:34.seconds is the lead for Aaron Royle. Ore Oduba has found himself at a

:52:35. > :52:38.wedding. I really am going to crash this

:52:39. > :52:41.wedding. It is not what you expect at a triathlon race, some of the

:52:42. > :52:46.best runners and riders in the world going along the River Trent, and

:52:47. > :52:53.then we find Lauren and John. First things first, congratulations. Thank

:52:54. > :52:57.you. Thank you. I am glad you didn't leave a glass of champagne for me!

:52:58. > :53:04.What a lovely day for a wedding. It is beautiful. Stunning. Did you

:53:05. > :53:12.expect BBC sport? Did you expect a triathlon racing past year on the

:53:13. > :53:16.day? Not so much, a nice shock and a logistical nightmare but it's great.

:53:17. > :53:22.And when they told you that BBC sport would come and crash your

:53:23. > :53:25.wedding, John, you said? I love it. That is the right answer, we have

:53:26. > :53:31.kept you for too long. Your family is here taking every single selfie.

:53:32. > :53:35.Let's get a good one, shall we? There we go. That's the official

:53:36. > :53:40.one. Back to you. We have a party to enjoy... I mean a race.

:53:41. > :53:44.Congratulations from the commentary box to the new Mr and Mrs McCann it.

:53:45. > :53:48.The race has changed complexion because Gordon Benson has struck the

:53:49. > :53:55.front of the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup, Aaron Royle's leap

:53:56. > :53:59.disintegrated in the early stages of the 1.5 kilometre run, Matthew

:54:00. > :54:03.Sharpe of Canada and Perin is not far behind. Chris Perham from

:54:04. > :54:06.Portland in Dorset where it, racing for Loughborough I giving a really

:54:07. > :54:11.good account of himself, and now it is Gordon Benson leading the way.

:54:12. > :54:19.Great to see Gordon running really well now as they approach the

:54:20. > :54:22.changeover Park. Next in line we have Lucy Hall, so that's going to

:54:23. > :54:27.be interesting on the swim because we know she is a great swimmer and

:54:28. > :54:30.has a great bike leg. Matthew Sharpe from Canada hanging onto the heels

:54:31. > :54:35.of Gordon Benson. I am looking forward to Jess Learmonth versus

:54:36. > :54:40.Lucy Hall over the swim, that could be good. As it looks it will be Jess

:54:41. > :54:44.chasing down Lucy. For a while it looked like it would be the other

:54:45. > :54:47.way around, as Gordon has had such a great run and Aaron has struggled a

:54:48. > :54:52.little. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the effort he put in to go

:54:53. > :54:55.solo on the bike, whereas these three boys were working together,

:54:56. > :54:58.Aaron was on his own. Gordon has capitalised on that and taking

:54:59. > :55:03.advantage. Milliwatt Alistair was saying, some good tactics from him.

:55:04. > :55:08.Let's not forget that Chris Perham from Loughborough I will hand over

:55:09. > :55:10.to Nono Boban Jodie Stimpson, the 28-year-old regular on the World

:55:11. > :55:13.Triathlon Series, just recently returning from injury and she loves

:55:14. > :55:20.triathlon and competing. We will have Learmonth, Hall, Paula Findlay,

:55:21. > :55:23.multiple World Triathlon Series winner for Canada and Jodie Stimpson

:55:24. > :55:29.going head-to-head in the next stage. Aaron Royle has lost a little

:55:30. > :55:33.bit of time, which is a little dangerous for Leeds I, we didn't

:55:34. > :55:38.expect him to lose so much time as we approach transition now. Here we

:55:39. > :55:42.go, hands raised, Lucy Hall raising her hand, she is tagged by Gordon

:55:43. > :55:47.Benson and it is a sprint finish down the pontoon towards the water.

:55:48. > :55:51.Lucy Hall is on her way, chased along the carpet by Paula Findlay,

:55:52. > :55:55.who will stop and dive. Lucy Hall wanted to make sure that was clean

:55:56. > :55:59.and she is on her way. Jess Learmonth goes into the water. We

:56:00. > :56:02.wait for Jodie Stimpson who I think will be the fourth in, Jodie

:56:03. > :56:08.Stimpson away. It was the other way round, it was Stimpson and then

:56:09. > :56:11.Learmonth. Paula Findlay will try and hang onto Lucy's coat-tails,

:56:12. > :56:16.Lucy being such a classy swimmer, she had just the best in the sport,

:56:17. > :56:22.so she needs to keep on her coat tails. Joe Dean is making inroads

:56:23. > :56:24.here onto Paula Findlay's feet. Not surprised, Jody Swan phenomenally

:56:25. > :56:28.well in Stockholm and has worked hard on that this year throughout

:56:29. > :56:39.her injury and it is paying off, she is caught at the Canadian already --

:56:40. > :56:43.Jodie Swan. What is it about Lucy Hall's struck? There is lots of

:56:44. > :56:47.flapping going on but she is just cruising through the water. You

:56:48. > :56:51.watch it and think she is not just trying but she has very good

:56:52. > :56:54.technique and good shoulder range, shoulder mobility, without getting

:56:55. > :56:58.too technical. Into something she means she can catch hold of more

:56:59. > :57:04.water with every stroke and she uses it to such great ability. She really

:57:05. > :57:07.does stretch out on the swings. Loss of the other swimmers you see with a

:57:08. > :57:16.higher cadence who have what we consider more of a triathlon open

:57:17. > :57:19.water style stroke where you are not letting too much wave come in to

:57:20. > :57:21.disrupt what you are doing. But Lucy doesn't seem to need to do that

:57:22. > :57:26.because her stroke is so efficient and shoulder mobility so good. 41

:57:27. > :57:33.minutes since this British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup began. We have Jess

:57:34. > :57:39.Learmonth, Lucy Hall, Paula Findlay, Jodie Stimpson battling it out for

:57:40. > :57:43.the top four places. They will exit the water and head towards their

:57:44. > :57:49.bikes with two lapse of 7.5 kilometres each. It looks like the

:57:50. > :57:55.three behind have grouped together and that will make it a little bit

:57:56. > :57:58.hard for Lucy Hall, I think. Jodie Stimpson in there, Jess Learmonth,

:57:59. > :58:05.no surprise she has caught back-up, we know she is such a strong

:58:06. > :58:08.swimmer. Paula Findlay as well from Canada. You mentioned back there she

:58:09. > :58:12.has won five World Triathlon Series events but in the last couple of

:58:13. > :58:15.years suffered lots of injuries. She is not quite the athlete she was but

:58:16. > :58:22.she is improving as the months go by. Lucy Hall was an Olympian in

:58:23. > :58:26.London 2012, she raced as part of the British team. Known as one of

:58:27. > :58:33.the strong list swimmers on the World Series. She is stretching her

:58:34. > :58:36.lead. The others are battling it out for second position. That group of

:58:37. > :58:43.three could work well on the bike when they pick them up shortly.

:58:44. > :58:46.Vicky Holland has gone down Riverside to join Ore Oduba, and I

:58:47. > :58:50.am delighted to say she has been replaced in the commentary booth by

:58:51. > :58:54.the double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee. Good afternoon and well,

:58:55. > :59:00.long. Good afternoon, how are you doing? Good. What you make of the

:59:01. > :59:02.relay so far? Fantastic action packed, unpredictable, we are seeing

:59:03. > :59:09.real action and I don't think anyone would have predicted the teams to be

:59:10. > :59:12.winning at this point. It is a great position. For the fans watching to

:59:13. > :59:17.be so uncertain I don't think you could ask for more. What did you

:59:18. > :59:21.make of Aaron Royle's tactics on the bike? He did what he had to do and

:59:22. > :59:25.Leeds's tactic was great, I listen to the commentary and Aaron did

:59:26. > :59:28.exactly the right thing, he had to go for it. Gordon did the right

:59:29. > :59:32.thing, had to sit at the back of the group and do no work, that was a

:59:33. > :59:36.specific Leeds tactic between the teams and this is Lucy out of the

:59:37. > :59:40.water but Ike spec to catch her in the first few kilometres on the

:59:41. > :59:47.bike. Lucy Hall multitasking on her way up the carpet. She will arrive

:59:48. > :59:51.at her bike shortly. We could see an interesting by Klich developer with

:59:52. > :59:54.some of the big names in world triathlon taking part. Lucy Hall

:59:55. > :59:58.arrives at her bike, Jess Learmonth will not be too far behind, Jodie

:59:59. > :00:01.Stimpson and Paula Findlay in the group as well. They might not be too

:00:02. > :00:09.far apart by the time they leave transition. Leeds II and Leeds I,

:00:10. > :00:14.Canada and Loughborough I. The four main contenders as it stands, in

:00:15. > :00:17.search of the three available medals this afternoon. Lucy Hall getting

:00:18. > :00:21.her feet on her pedals and away she goes on lap one. This part of the

:00:22. > :00:24.race is so crucial and it is what you and your brother do so well.

:00:25. > :00:28.Looking at the girls, they've got to start working hard, you cannot lose

:00:29. > :00:34.any time. Especially when the field is this small, only talking about

:00:35. > :00:38.two or three in a grip, there is a real opportunity to split. What I

:00:39. > :00:42.was looking for, in the case of Leeds they want a gap going into the

:00:43. > :00:46.last leg to give them the best chance of winning the race so they

:00:47. > :00:49.are not racing against Loughborough's athlete. Jess had a

:00:50. > :00:52.great opportunity to do it there and they were spread out coming over the

:00:53. > :00:57.transition with Lucy coming up the road and because she didn't have the

:00:58. > :01:00.clean transition she lost the opportunity. She is still a greater

:01:01. > :01:03.really athlete and strong across all three sports but that five seconds

:01:04. > :01:08.in transition potentially could have been a turning point.

:01:09. > :01:14.Interesting, Lucy Hall still hasn't bothered to complete putting her

:01:15. > :01:17.shoes on. She is trying to get some speed up and maintain and

:01:18. > :01:21.consolidate the lead. The other three micro behind her are working

:01:22. > :01:32.together, with Stimson drafting at the back. Then it is Jess Learmonth,

:01:33. > :01:38.and then another experienced athlete in the shape of Paula Findlay. How

:01:39. > :01:44.quickly do you expect them to catch her? It's interesting, the smart

:01:45. > :01:47.thing would be for Jess to do nothing, said that the back of these

:01:48. > :01:51.three, let them tire out and then have a go at catching Lucy, so there

:01:52. > :01:58.are two micro elite athletes in front. But there is no benefit for

:01:59. > :02:01.Jess to do any work and catch Lucy, if you are looking at the big

:02:02. > :02:05.picture of a Leeds team winning. What I noticed in the men's race,

:02:06. > :02:08.with the three athletes trying to chase down Aaron, they did not

:02:09. > :02:12.connect well, there were not working well. Three athletes like that, you

:02:13. > :02:16.should be on the front for no more than five seconds. When it is only

:02:17. > :02:19.three, you'd need to do 20 or 30 seconds at least, if you are only

:02:20. > :02:25.doing five at a time, you are resting for ten seconds. The reason

:02:26. > :02:28.they were not connecting was because Adam Bowden was doing the right

:02:29. > :02:31.thing, he was sitting at the last of the three men and not coming

:02:32. > :02:35.through, which disrupts the line. You see Johnny and me yelling at

:02:36. > :02:38.people in races, try to get people to consistently do the same thing,

:02:39. > :02:44.so you know where you are, try to go as fast as you can. The three girls

:02:45. > :02:50.behind should be working 20 seconds or 30 seconds maximum, then dropping

:02:51. > :02:57.back? I would say so, then a minute or so of rest to give yourself time

:02:58. > :03:02.to recover. Lucy Hall, leading the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup,

:03:03. > :03:12.for Leeds II. Then a group of three closing her down quickly. Slowing,

:03:13. > :03:19.allowing Findlay, Jess Learmonth to come through. It would have been a

:03:20. > :03:24.great opportunity. A textbook opportunity to split the field.

:03:25. > :03:27.Another really small thing that could be a turning point in the

:03:28. > :03:31.whole race. But now there is no real reason for any of these four to

:03:32. > :03:35.work. You know, the guys behind are the best part of a minute behind

:03:36. > :03:42.these four, a decent amount of time. The threats are all in this group of

:03:43. > :03:48.four. It's an interesting stand off. The chase group includes GB Juniors,

:03:49. > :03:54.they were the next best, with Lizzie Hood, the 19-year-old from Dorset,

:03:55. > :03:58.swimming, biking and riding stage 34 GB Juniors. We will keep an eye on

:03:59. > :04:01.her progress. Now this group, as Alistair Brownlee has pointed out,

:04:02. > :04:06.they don't really need to do much. Just keep together as a quartet

:04:07. > :04:12.prepare for the 1500 metre run, where we might see some fireworks.

:04:13. > :04:21.Definitely. I think the clear best runner is Jodie, we don't know what

:04:22. > :04:25.kind of shape she is in. Running over 1500 metres can be different to

:04:26. > :04:28.running over ten kilometres. That's one of the things about the relay,

:04:29. > :04:32.always unpredictable. The other point is that Jess has been on great

:04:33. > :04:39.form. Like I said before, as an all-round athlete, she is one of the

:04:40. > :04:43.best out there. Over a short run, I really would not put much money on

:04:44. > :04:51.there being much difference between Jodie and Jess. These four athletes

:04:52. > :04:54.were racing in Stockholm last weekend, only six days ago. There's

:04:55. > :04:58.a good chance that Jess is tired, because it was a big race for her.

:04:59. > :05:02.Jodie, the fact she has been out for a long time, she could be tired.

:05:03. > :05:06.Jodi probably go slightly better in the first part of the ten kilometres

:05:07. > :05:12.than in the second part, especially when she is not very fit. We will

:05:13. > :05:16.see, I am not sure the Stockholm factor is that much of a factor. Six

:05:17. > :05:19.or seven days, I found that I raced better the second weekend, you have

:05:20. > :05:23.effectively had five days of proper rest and you don't normally do that.

:05:24. > :05:27.It affects different athletes differently. We will see. But it was

:05:28. > :05:32.a big race for Jess. She could be really tired from it or she could be

:05:33. > :05:37.really positive and upbeat, have sky-high confidence. Looking ahead,

:05:38. > :05:40.Jess Learmonth, that we have just been talking about, will hand over

:05:41. > :05:47.to Tom Bishop, the 26-year-old from Derby. He will swim, bike and run

:05:48. > :05:50.the final stage for Leeds I. Lucy Hall, passing to Mark Buckingham, a

:05:51. > :05:55.late entry into the race. Highly experienced, he has been doing some

:05:56. > :06:02.long-distance triathlon. He will swim, bike and run the final stage

:06:03. > :06:07.for Leeds I. Passing on to Ben Dijkstra, 18 years of age, he has

:06:08. > :06:16.lots of talent. We are excited about seeing him the last mind for -- we

:06:17. > :06:24.are excited about seeing him. The last man for Canada, we will see

:06:25. > :06:29.what he has to offer. These four have still got to finish their

:06:30. > :06:32.biking and run their 1500 metres before we can start thinking about

:06:33. > :06:34.that. Is there any point on this course where you think it might be

:06:35. > :06:41.worthwhile trying to have a go and give yourself ten seconds coming

:06:42. > :06:45.into the swim or handing over? Or is it not worth losing the energy? We

:06:46. > :06:52.saw the effect of having to ride on your own in terms of Aaron, he had

:06:53. > :06:56.to commit completely to that and it cost him his run. There is always

:06:57. > :07:00.positives and negatives. For me, it is probably too late. You have three

:07:01. > :07:07.kilometres to go. The girls behind have pretty much stopped pedalling.

:07:08. > :07:13.The energy used is not worth the reward. It is either that first

:07:14. > :07:15.kilometre out of transition when you have the opportunity, or when there

:07:16. > :07:19.is something that happens in the race, where the group comes

:07:20. > :07:23.together, there is a catch up. If you were going to do it, you do a

:07:24. > :07:26.corner or a turn, but for me it would be too late. Do you ever look

:07:27. > :07:30.at some of the races and think, it is frustrating, what they are doing

:07:31. > :07:35.coming out of transition. You and Johnny do it so well. You see people

:07:36. > :07:40.fumbling, do you think, do you not practice this? I don't watch a love

:07:41. > :07:44.of racing, but it is frustrating. What I tell people is that it is

:07:45. > :07:48.swimming, cycling, running and transitions. It is the whole thing.

:07:49. > :07:52.It is worth practising and tried to be as good as you come across that.

:07:53. > :07:55.Good tactics, Jess having a go and Lucy sitting up to try to create the

:07:56. > :08:00.gap. That is the kind of thing they should be doing, with the advantage

:08:01. > :08:04.of having two people in the group. If you have questions for Alistair

:08:05. > :08:11.Brownlee or Vicky Holland, get them in using the hashtag #bbctriathlon.

:08:12. > :08:17.We will catch up with them and Ore after the race. Almost 52 minutes

:08:18. > :08:24.since the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup began in Nottingham. No

:08:25. > :08:29.real change. The quartet of Leeds I, Leeds II, Loughborough I and Canada

:08:30. > :08:32.remaining intact at the front of the field. They were the four teams that

:08:33. > :08:36.we thought would be up there and they are very tightly bunched at the

:08:37. > :08:41.moment. This is the chase group, I don't know if you are picking

:08:42. > :08:45.anybody out? Looking at the splits, even see the gap back from the four

:08:46. > :08:51.at the front, to the chasing group, 50 odd seconds with Japan, and then

:08:52. > :08:55.a minute with a few of them catching up. The gaps are opening up, as you

:08:56. > :09:00.would expect at this point in a relay. So, you can fairly

:09:01. > :09:04.confidently say that outside of the first four the rest of the teams out

:09:05. > :09:11.of the race for the moment. GB Juniors with Lizzie Hood, the GB

:09:12. > :09:14.under 23s with Sarah Hodgson, 22-year-old, swimming, biking and

:09:15. > :09:19.running the third leg. But the medals look likely to be going the

:09:20. > :09:25.way of this group of four. The lead group, well into their second lap on

:09:26. > :09:30.the bike with a 1500 metre run to come. This is legs three of the

:09:31. > :09:34.inaugural Accenture British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup. We have

:09:35. > :09:47.had lots to enjoy so far. We still have the final leg from Tom Bishop,

:09:48. > :09:52.Mark Buckingham, Jeremy Bremont. Paula Findlay thinks the pace might

:09:53. > :09:57.be sluggish, so try to move it along. It is about getting into the

:09:58. > :10:05.right position now. It is. One of the real old school things is being

:10:06. > :10:10.in the front of transition. Over Olympic distance, I'm not sure how

:10:11. > :10:14.important that is. You are running ten kilometres, wasting a bit of

:10:15. > :10:18.energy, it is not worth it. As long as you catch that five seconds up

:10:19. > :10:22.slowly, and don't try to do it in the first 400 metres, it does not

:10:23. > :10:26.cost you too much. Relay is very different. 1500 metres, five seconds

:10:27. > :10:31.makes a great deal of difference. But there are only four of you, so

:10:32. > :10:35.the split to be one two seconds maximum, between the first and

:10:36. > :10:45.second athlete. Jostling for position. Some are starting to

:10:46. > :10:48.remove their feet from their shoes and resting them on top. You don't

:10:49. > :10:50.want to be getting tangled up with the other triathletes coming at this

:10:51. > :10:53.stage, as Alistair pointed out. It is all about swim, bike, run and

:10:54. > :11:02.transitions. We all know how important it can be. Leeds I, Leeds

:11:03. > :11:06.II, Loughborough I and Canada, locked together. Who is going to be

:11:07. > :11:18.first to ride? A stumble for Lucy Hall. Findlay arrives at her parking

:11:19. > :11:24.position first. No panic from Jodie Stimson, and she is away? Yes, great

:11:25. > :11:29.transitions, very solid, composed competitor. She proved it there.

:11:30. > :11:35.Lucy stumbling has cost her a bit. I would expect Jess and Jodie to run

:11:36. > :11:40.here. You are never quite sure what you're going to get. She was a

:11:41. > :11:45.fantastic athlete, going back a few years ago now. 2010, 20 11. We

:11:46. > :11:51.haven't quite seeing the same since then. She seems to be slowly getting

:11:52. > :11:55.back to where she was. Jess this on fantastically. She knows it is only

:11:56. > :12:02.one mile. If there is anything Jess is good that it is going all in, and

:12:03. > :12:05.that is what she's doing. No sign of fatigue from Jessica Lee a month,

:12:06. > :12:14.from Tadcaster. What an athlete she has been. Find a way of seeing her

:12:15. > :12:18.interview, she is full of humour, concern and success. It was a great

:12:19. > :12:26.interview after her second position in Stockholm. Jodie Stimpson is in

:12:27. > :12:30.third position. Lucy Hall has lost four five seconds and she is further

:12:31. > :12:40.down the embankment fourth position. Jess Learmonth stretches her lead.

:12:41. > :12:49.Susie dot Lucy Hall has lost a bit of time? She went quite hard. She

:12:50. > :12:56.would say as much of anybody that the running is not a strong point.

:12:57. > :13:00.Jess, similar. Great swimmer and biker, but has improved her run.

:13:01. > :13:07.Good on her. She is doing well. All Findlay seems to be hanging in well.

:13:08. > :13:11.On top of the bridge, one of the rises. Lets go Riverside and join

:13:12. > :13:19.Ore with Vicky Holland. We are enjoying the race alongside

:13:20. > :13:28.some of the friends and family. If you want to find these guys, the

:13:29. > :13:32.family Stimpson here. We have just seen Jess Learmonth leading things

:13:33. > :13:37.out. Second place in Stockholm, she said to you before this race... I'm

:13:38. > :13:40.tired, I feel heavy, dealing with coming back from altitude. She was

:13:41. > :13:46.put out that she would have to lay it on the line today. The way we

:13:47. > :13:49.have seen this race so far, taking them on on the swim, catching up to

:13:50. > :13:55.the pack. Not only catching up to them, she is running in the front.

:13:56. > :14:00.This is an athlete informed. What does that do for you, when you are

:14:01. > :14:05.on a roll like that? That was a record-breaking moment for her, her

:14:06. > :14:09.first World Series medal. It really does pick you up, the confidence

:14:10. > :14:13.goes through the roof? Absolutely, she has been improving all year, in

:14:14. > :14:17.fact for the last couple of years. She won the European title earlier

:14:18. > :14:23.this year. To win that and then come back to compete so well in

:14:24. > :14:27.Stockholm, she is on a roll. We can see her shoulder to shoulder. Paula

:14:28. > :14:31.Findlay is not to be sniffed at, she won five world titles. Not for

:14:32. > :14:35.several years now, but she is an incredible athlete in her right. The

:14:36. > :14:40.last frantic and furious leg is still to come. Is it shaping up how

:14:41. > :14:50.you saw it. Loughborough and Canada leaving? Leeds and Canada. That is

:14:51. > :14:54.Learmonth, I was confused. I think Canada was always a strong

:14:55. > :14:59.contender. The last leg is potentially the weakest. That might

:15:00. > :15:11.be where Leeds can overcome them. Loughborough have a strong final leg

:15:12. > :15:15.in Ben Dijkstra. I was going to ask you, are you surprised that up until

:15:16. > :15:18.this point we had not seen a breakaway? Do you think from this

:15:19. > :15:20.point it will be hard for anyone to catch up? The boys have got some

:15:21. > :15:27.serious running in them. They have got some serious running

:15:28. > :15:32.in them and they will have to be smart about working together. Canada

:15:33. > :15:35.and Leeds I are likely to go away together. I find it hard to see

:15:36. > :15:39.Loughborough bringing them back in. It would take a phenomenal effort

:15:40. > :15:43.from Ben Dijkstra at the beginning of the swim leg to bring them back

:15:44. > :15:47.into the race and even fourth Leeds II, we have seen them dropped a

:15:48. > :15:50.little on this run and for them to come back into the race would be a

:15:51. > :15:53.tough ask, especially Mark Buckingham doing the last leg has

:15:54. > :15:57.just come back from racing in Canada twice over the last week and only

:15:58. > :16:02.landed in the UK on Wednesday. It is a hard ask for them to get back in.

:16:03. > :16:07.It is and they are just coming in behind us into the trees, it's time

:16:08. > :16:11.to change over, Matt Chilton. The final changeover. Here they

:16:12. > :16:15.come, brilliant run from Jessica Learmonth, handing over to Tom

:16:16. > :16:20.Bishop, Paula Findlay has run well as well, Jeremy Briand is on his way

:16:21. > :16:25.on the shoulder of Tom Bishop. Here they go into the River Trent. The

:16:26. > :16:30.last leg of the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup, Tom Bishop

:16:31. > :16:35.swimming, biking and running for Leeds I, Jeremy Briand for Canada,

:16:36. > :16:40.Mark Buckingham on his way for Leeds II and Ben Dijkstra from

:16:41. > :16:44.Loughborough I will be swimming, biking and running their final leg.

:16:45. > :16:49.Alistair Brownlee, Tom Bishop is on his way. Can he do enough to win

:16:50. > :16:54.this for Leeds? It is a tough position Tom is in. It is a 50-50

:16:55. > :16:57.choice whether he goes for it with a neck second gap on Ben Dijkstra, or

:16:58. > :17:07.sits and waits and conserves energy for the run. Ben has pretty much

:17:08. > :17:10.caught them already. -- eight second gap. One of the things about the

:17:11. > :17:15.relay is you can be exposed in the relay in a way that you don't in

:17:16. > :17:19.normal racing. Ben is a fantastic swimmer, especially over this kind

:17:20. > :17:23.of distance. Eight seconds closed in probably not even 200 metres and he

:17:24. > :17:28.is on him and going past him already. Probably 150, so he's made

:17:29. > :17:32.about massive gap going straight past him, and at this point I think

:17:33. > :17:35.Tom must make the decision to sit and conserve and wait for an

:17:36. > :17:42.opportunity, does it occur through the transition, the bike, or can it

:17:43. > :17:46.occur on the run? We will wait and see. But basically it is back to the

:17:47. > :17:51.status quo again. I can't remember the last time I saw a mixed relay

:17:52. > :17:57.when they were so close at the start of the final leg. Three guys

:17:58. > :18:01.together. Tom Bishop from Leeds I, then Ben Dijkstra from Loughborough

:18:02. > :18:06.and Jeremy Briand from Canada and Mark Buckingham is the one who has

:18:07. > :18:10.got 30 seconds deficit to try and claw back as these three go shoulder

:18:11. > :18:17.to shoulder towards the end of their 300 metre swim. What a start to the

:18:18. > :18:21.final leg, spectacular action from Nottingham this afternoon. Really

:18:22. > :18:26.tough for Leeds II, wasn't it? Mark Buckingham stepped in and had to

:18:27. > :18:30.take over from Jonny who is at home and a bit poorly with the flu. Mark

:18:31. > :18:34.is a great biker and run but he doesn't quite have it on the swim.

:18:35. > :18:40.PE is a great all-round athlete and improving all the time but that is a

:18:41. > :18:43.little bit too long of a stretch for him and he will spend the rest of

:18:44. > :18:47.the race in no man's land, unless these guys slow up and it becomes

:18:48. > :18:50.tactical and he gets back into the race. A similar thing happened in

:18:51. > :18:54.the watch championship a couple of weeks ago and the Australian cutback

:18:55. > :18:58.into the race and won. These guys are still shoulder to shoulder and

:18:59. > :19:02.slugging each other down, which is not intelligent racing. Tom is

:19:03. > :19:11.having to do the work of one and a half people dragging Ben with him,

:19:12. > :19:13.Ben is doing the right thing sitting out on his own. Where should they

:19:14. > :19:16.positioned in the water, the three of them like that? The minute you

:19:17. > :19:18.are even ten centimetres, swimming behind the guy next to you you are

:19:19. > :19:21.giving them a massive drag and making it harder. Ben is sitting 20

:19:22. > :19:26.centimetres back and getting a really big advantage swimming off

:19:27. > :19:30.Tom's hips, swimming ten or 20% easy and at this effort level that makes

:19:31. > :19:36.an incredible difference. If I was in Tom's position I would literally

:19:37. > :19:40.stop swimming because I'm doing so much work. Perfect tactics for Ben,

:19:41. > :19:43.just needs to be there now. There is no point in him doing anything, he

:19:44. > :19:47.will be near the front coming out of the water and there on the first

:19:48. > :19:56.part of the bike and he knows he will back himself towards the back

:19:57. > :20:00.end of the run. It will be a bit of a local race, Tom Bishop is from

:20:01. > :20:05.Derby, the two city is not far apart. Tom Bishop is the first to

:20:06. > :20:12.climb out of the water. He charges up the steps towards transition.

:20:13. > :20:20.Jeremy Briand and Ben Dijkstra not too far behind. Leeds I, Canada,

:20:21. > :20:23.Loughborough I, the three main contenders now. I must admit I don't

:20:24. > :20:28.know a lot about Jeremy Briand but he could be a dark horse, I have not

:20:29. > :20:32.seen him race an awful lot, so who knows? It could be that he is a

:20:33. > :20:38.great 1500 metre runner. I did check him out and I've got to be honest I

:20:39. > :20:41.don't think he will be a threat to Bishop and Ben Dijkstra. Bishop

:20:42. > :20:46.having a really good transition. He's got going, bit slow getting

:20:47. > :20:49.going, looked like he was in the wrong gear. Ben has really messed it

:20:50. > :20:53.up, it cost him two or three seconds and that could give Tom the chance

:20:54. > :20:59.to get an advantage coming onto the bike here, but that's part of racing

:21:00. > :21:02.and you use it if it is there. Ben is struggling. Again, one of these

:21:03. > :21:08.really small parts of the relay that can have big consequences. Yeah,

:21:09. > :21:11.he's probably ten seconds. He shouldn't be trying to get his feet

:21:12. > :21:17.in, he should pedal on top until he can get his feet on. Ben Dijkstra

:21:18. > :21:20.has the turn coming up now, the 18-year-old. Your heart goes out to

:21:21. > :21:23.him, he was in such a strong position and MSc exit from

:21:24. > :21:29.transition is allowed Tom Bishop to break away and Tom Bishop is going

:21:30. > :21:33.away with Jimmy Briand two or three seconds behind, Leeds I,

:21:34. > :21:38.Loughborough I, Canada and a captive Leeds II. What have you made of Tom

:21:39. > :21:44.Bishop this year, he had a fantastic race in Abu Dhabi. He ran pretty

:21:45. > :21:48.much neck and neck with Javier Gomez for about seven kilometres and he

:21:49. > :21:54.got a fifth place in another race. What do you think of Tom Bishop? He

:21:55. > :21:57.is fulfilling his potential, he is a good athlete, very good all round,

:21:58. > :22:01.he's a good runner when he is completely fit, his biking is solid

:22:02. > :22:04.and he is fulfilling his potential. He's had a few years when he has not

:22:05. > :22:08.been doing that, and he should have done it three or four years ago but

:22:09. > :22:14.he's doing it now, and good on him. There is a few races left in the

:22:15. > :22:17.year but he's already had a good year. We will see what he can do

:22:18. > :22:20.here. This is the perfect opportunity, it is man on man. There

:22:21. > :22:24.is a gap that is big enough that Ben is not getting a drag so it is

:22:25. > :22:28.basically a drag race to see if he can get back on. He looks like he's

:22:29. > :22:32.doing a fairly decent job. Like we were talking about in the swim, at

:22:33. > :22:36.that point Tom had to wait for an opportunity. Ben is not getting his

:22:37. > :22:40.feet in about percent of the opportunity and he is taking it,

:22:41. > :22:43.that's what you have to do in triathlon, take advantage of the

:22:44. > :22:46.opportunities you are given. Tom doesn't want to wait for Jeremy,

:22:47. > :22:50.probably doesn't know much about him, he knows a lot about Ben

:22:51. > :22:54.Dijkstra, who is only 18 so we can perhaps forgive him for the mishap

:22:55. > :22:57.he had coming out of transition. He's only 18 but he has good

:22:58. > :23:03.experience, he has a bronze medal. We can look now at Mark Buckingham.

:23:04. > :23:08.He forgot to put on his helmet, basic error, it's happened to me

:23:09. > :23:13.before. I can't be too scathing on him. Ben is one of those great

:23:14. > :23:16.athletes. He's a fantastic runner, he has had fantastic running

:23:17. > :23:21.results, done well in triathlon and he is just a great racer. Some

:23:22. > :23:27.people are great racers and Ben is one of them. We will see her what he

:23:28. > :23:32.is made. Tom is on his own without the Canadian, he is back with Ben.

:23:33. > :23:35.To be honest, at this point, even if Ben catches up Tom knows that he is

:23:36. > :23:39.swinging the race in his favour if then has to work hard on the bike

:23:40. > :23:42.and that is to Tom's advantage. Anything that turns this into a 20

:23:43. > :23:46.minute race rather than a three-minute race at the end of the

:23:47. > :23:49.run is to Tom's advantage so he's doing the right thing. So, Tom

:23:50. > :23:57.Bishop as a similarly to that enjoyed by Aaron Royle. He swam,

:23:58. > :24:00.biked and ran stage to four Leeds I and had a huge advantage which he

:24:01. > :24:08.let slip in the early stages of the run. Looking further down the road,

:24:09. > :24:11.Jimmy Briand and Ben Dijkstra are now further and further removed from

:24:12. > :24:19.Tom Bishop out in front. Ship needs to do what went he hits the 1500

:24:20. > :24:26.metre run, Alistair -- Bishop needs to do what? He needs to control a

:24:27. > :24:30.really good race of 1500 metres, he has four minutes to run, how can I

:24:31. > :24:33.run as fast as possible? Rather than on a normal triathlon, breaking it

:24:34. > :24:37.up over the first two or three minutes and put people into issues.

:24:38. > :24:40.You need to go, dizzy time trial effectively, that's the difference.

:24:41. > :24:46.I'm not sure what we are seeing behind, I think that is Ben on his

:24:47. > :24:48.own, not sure what happened to the Canadian guy Briand, unless they are

:24:49. > :24:52.stretched out on the road and we cannot see them because of the

:24:53. > :24:57.cameras. Tom is on his own getting a little bit of help from the camera

:24:58. > :25:01.bike, but part of racing, if it is there. Ben is still chasing him

:25:02. > :25:06.down. If this goes over ten seconds either start of the run it is race

:25:07. > :25:10.over. For Ben, it could already be, he's having to put in a massive

:25:11. > :25:14.effort to stay anywhere near Tom and I will definitely cost his running

:25:15. > :25:17.legs but we will see. Watching this race unfold and knowing the mixed

:25:18. > :25:22.relay will be part of the Olympic programme in Tokyo in 2020, how

:25:23. > :25:26.tempted are you to be focusing on that and be part of potentially a

:25:27. > :25:31.British team at the next Olympics? With the announcement of the mixed

:25:32. > :25:34.relay when it was going to be in the Olympics a few months ago it

:25:35. > :25:38.definitely changed my opinion on trying to go to another Olympic

:25:39. > :25:42.Games. The Olympics is fantastic but I kind of felt I'm not 100% sure if

:25:43. > :25:47.I want to do it again. I've been lucky enough to go twice and it

:25:48. > :25:50.might be pushing my luck but the fact this is in, it is a fantastic

:25:51. > :25:54.and exciting event and the fact it gives you a chance to win two

:25:55. > :25:58.medals, it is brilliant and it definitely became a much more

:25:59. > :26:01.tenting prospect. And for your younger brother Jonny it would give

:26:02. > :26:06.him the chance to get the full set, he has a bronze and silver so far.

:26:07. > :26:11.Maybe along with you and two others he could grab a gold. Yeah, it would

:26:12. > :26:14.give him a chance to have the full set and like I said, just win

:26:15. > :26:18.another medal, which I think he would be more than happy to do. One

:26:19. > :26:22.of the big things about the mixed relay is what we're doing now,

:26:23. > :26:27.people are enjoying learning about it, doing it, learning about the

:26:28. > :26:30.tactical nuances. I think there is much that no one quite understands

:26:31. > :26:36.yet and it's interesting. This gap has opened right up now, 15 seconds

:26:37. > :26:40.I would say. I think that was a lapse athlete behind, one of the

:26:41. > :26:44.Stirling teams. Ben has just gone past, 15 seconds, he has motorbikes

:26:45. > :26:51.behind him which is unfortunate for him. But I think that is a big gap,

:26:52. > :26:55.still not coming up on the splits. But that is a decent gap. To be

:26:56. > :27:00.honest, I think all the money is on Tom to win this for the Leeds team

:27:01. > :27:04.because not only is the gap big, but Ben has really had to work on the

:27:05. > :27:10.bike and that will cost him on the run compared to Tom. Deep in lap

:27:11. > :27:15.two, the final leg of the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup and it is

:27:16. > :27:17.Leeds I in the hands of Tom Bishop leading the race, El-Abd athlete

:27:18. > :27:24.coming through. The gap is considerable now. Chip is in the

:27:25. > :27:33.wrong direction as far as he's concerned. -- Bishop is going in the

:27:34. > :27:38.wrong direction. -- a lapped athlete. Ben is looking in control

:27:39. > :27:42.on the bike and like he has had to fight it hard and that's costing him

:27:43. > :27:45.on the second half of the bike leg and on the run. No idea what

:27:46. > :27:50.happened to the Canadian guy, we're not seeing that at all. Like we were

:27:51. > :27:54.just talking about earlier, with Tom, sometimes it's easy to get

:27:55. > :27:57.exposed if you have a weak leg on the relay, it's easy to make the

:27:58. > :28:01.most of it if you have a strong leg and Tom is making the most of his

:28:02. > :28:04.opportunity on the bike. Ben is being exposed because his biking

:28:05. > :28:08.isn't quite as strong as he'd like it to be, and that wouldn't happen

:28:09. > :28:11.in an individual race because it's much more difficult to expose

:28:12. > :28:14.athletes. That's one of the great things about the relay, it can

:28:15. > :28:19.become a real test of an all-round triathlete. Ben has kind of kept it

:28:20. > :28:22.together because he could have lost the plot slightly coming out of

:28:23. > :28:27.chance issue. I was there with Tom. He is more or less holding his own.

:28:28. > :28:31.Tom Tumi looks like he is riding really well. I think Tom is riding

:28:32. > :28:37.really well. He has done exactly the right thing here. -- Tom Tumi looks

:28:38. > :28:43.like he is riding really well. He could have done more to get across

:28:44. > :28:53.the gap. We are talking about a very high level Phil. On a world-class

:28:54. > :28:59.level racing Tom I think it has cost him. We have seen that. We're not

:29:00. > :29:04.sure what happened to Jeremy Briand who was the anchor leg member of the

:29:05. > :29:09.Canadian team. But if he struggled it may have given a chance for Leeds

:29:10. > :29:12.II to get back into contention. Mark Buckingham swimming, biking and

:29:13. > :29:17.running the final leg for Leeds II, 30 seconds off the pace in the water

:29:18. > :29:21.that he may well be up towards a medal position now. We will find out

:29:22. > :29:28.once they house their bikes at the end of the final leg of the

:29:29. > :29:33.inaugural Accenture British relay cup, a tremendous contest so far.

:29:34. > :29:39.The lead is a monumental 24 seconds over Ben Dijkstra. He is doing well,

:29:40. > :29:42.he is lapping athletes, I think the lapped athletes should stay to the

:29:43. > :29:46.side of the course just for safety and so people can clearly view what

:29:47. > :29:51.is going on. This is perfect for Tom, 24 seconds at this level over

:29:52. > :29:59.this distance. That is among the mental gap. There is pretty much no

:30:00. > :30:02.chance of him getting caught. Leeds I to win this, I would expect then,

:30:03. > :30:05.whatever has happened, to hold onto second place, and we have no idea

:30:06. > :30:10.what is going on with Canada and Leeds II the third and fourth. It

:30:11. > :30:13.will not happen because Ben is way back. What would have happened if

:30:14. > :30:17.they had gone off on the bike together? That is the million-dollar

:30:18. > :30:21.question it depends very much. If they both hit this fresh and have

:30:22. > :30:25.basically done no work and with fresh coming into the second

:30:26. > :30:28.transition after stomach for a mile run I think you would have been

:30:29. > :30:32.close, I think Ben would have had it, Ben is good over this sort of

:30:33. > :30:35.distance. If he'd caught Tom three quarters of the way through after

:30:36. > :30:38.working hard and Tom not working quite so hard, I think Tom would

:30:39. > :30:42.have still had it, and obviously in this case Tom is going to have it.

:30:43. > :30:46.Tom Bishop in and out of transition in a flash, no stumbles, no

:30:47. > :30:52.problems, he has a 1500 metre run ahead of him now as he attempts to

:30:53. > :30:57.bring home the gold. For Leeds I. We are still waiting for the arrival of

:30:58. > :31:00.Ben Dijkstra who should be second, representing Loughborough I, should

:31:01. > :31:07.be seconded to transition. Tom Bishop on his way, following the

:31:08. > :31:10.arrows out full support is beginning to arrive, the leaves falling from

:31:11. > :31:15.the trees, and he is going to run on both sides of the River Trent now.

:31:16. > :31:18.Loughborough with Ben Dijkstra. He had another dodgy transition and now

:31:19. > :31:24.playing around with the back of his suit, get on, four minutes to run.

:31:25. > :31:30.We are seeing 33 seconds gap coming out onto the run over 1.5 K, that is

:31:31. > :31:34.a massive amount, 20 seconds per kilometre, so

:31:35. > :31:40.I think you will have to come and hang out with you in Leeds a little

:31:41. > :31:45.bit, get a few tips from you. I think he would have to hang out with

:31:46. > :31:49.Mo Farah to close that gap! Pretty straightforward at the moment.

:31:50. > :31:56.Anything can happen. But Tom Bishop looks comfortable as he makes the

:31:57. > :31:59.first climb. At the top of the climb he will cross Trent Bridge, the

:32:00. > :32:04.other end who will cross the Suspension Bridge and then he will

:32:05. > :32:09.be on his way. 33 seconds, the gap between Leeds I and Loughborough I.

:32:10. > :32:17.Canada, still in third position, a further 36 seconds down. The task

:32:18. > :32:23.for Leeds two is to close the gap to Canada over the 1500 metre run. It

:32:24. > :32:32.will be a foot race between Buckingham of Leeds II and Jeremy

:32:33. > :32:35.Briand of Canada. It is pretty much an unsurmountable gap, I would have

:32:36. > :32:40.thought. We don't quite know how good a run amok to is, but it is a

:32:41. > :32:46.massive gap to close by any standards. I expect that to stay the

:32:47. > :32:53.same. Mark has not been training for this. But as an ex-steeplechaser he

:32:54. > :32:57.could have been really class. I would expect the positions to stay

:32:58. > :33:02.as they are now. We have had a lot of experience at the mixed relay

:33:03. > :33:05.championships. You were part of the Commonwealth Games team that won

:33:06. > :33:09.gold. A lot of people might be looking and thinking it is a lot

:33:10. > :33:13.shorter, so it must be easier. Actually, it is pretty hard, the

:33:14. > :33:19.short distance racing. We have just seen him go past the bridge, and

:33:20. > :33:24.maybe he has decided that the places are how they are and what will be

:33:25. > :33:28.will be. Absolutely, it is kind of irrelevant, sometimes, how long

:33:29. > :33:30.things are. A massive amount of energy and effort into a short

:33:31. > :33:37.distance, and that could make it harder. Some of the mixed relay is

:33:38. > :33:41.we have done over the past, short and intense, you're trying to do

:33:42. > :33:44.everything you can. Also, you are racing for your team. You don't want

:33:45. > :33:49.to let your team-mates down. It can be some of the hardest races I have

:33:50. > :33:55.done as well. Jeremy Briand, holding onto bronze position for Canada.

:33:56. > :33:59.Joanna Brown, Matt Sharpe and Paula Findlay are his team-mates. But they

:34:00. > :34:02.are stretched out, with great distances between them. Look at the

:34:03. > :34:07.crowds around Victoria Embankment in Nottingham. This event in the city,

:34:08. > :34:09.the first-ever running of the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup

:34:10. > :34:14.has been very well received. They have come out in their thousands to

:34:15. > :34:18.watch the triathlon unfold this afternoon. It will be a man from

:34:19. > :34:25.Derby, from not too far away, Tom Bishop, who should bring home the

:34:26. > :34:30.gold for the team from Leeds I. It started with Georgia Taylor-Brown,

:34:31. > :34:33.in sensational form. She passed on to the Australian, Aaron Royle, who

:34:34. > :34:39.rode his bike brilliantly, giving himself a solid lead. Jess Learmonth

:34:40. > :34:43.took up the challenge in stage three for Leeds I, and the advantage to

:34:44. > :34:49.Tom Bishop, who took that on, strengthened it and will shortly

:34:50. > :34:53.bring it home for a gold medal for Leeds I. He crosses the Suspension

:34:54. > :34:59.Bridge, having climbed to the top. He will run down to the other side.

:35:00. > :35:04.Then it is almost done. This is a fantastic site, isn't it? Great

:35:05. > :35:08.venue for triathlon. Almost like a natural amphitheatre on both sides

:35:09. > :35:11.of the river. The last few hundred metres now, fantastic crowds and he

:35:12. > :35:19.has a chance to enjoy it. What a momentous occasion. First mixed

:35:20. > :35:23.relay champions, Leeds. Who else would it be? Leeds I will become the

:35:24. > :35:31.British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup champions for 2017, Tom Bishop, with

:35:32. > :35:33.his team-mates, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Aaron Royle and Jess

:35:34. > :35:38.Learmonth. Tom Bishop is the champion. The battle continues for

:35:39. > :35:44.silver and bronze. The silver should be awarded the team from

:35:45. > :35:48.Loughborough I, Ben Dijkstra was 30 seconds behind last time we checked

:35:49. > :35:53.the clock. Then Jodie Stimpson, crisp heron and Sophie Coldwell, the

:35:54. > :35:58.team from Loughborough I. They will be collecting silver medals this

:35:59. > :36:07.afternoon. Ben Dijkstra with some problems coming out transition both

:36:08. > :36:08.occasions, but he has held on. The 18-year-old from Loughborough,

:36:09. > :36:17.representing Loughborough I, bringing home the silver medal. And

:36:18. > :36:19.we are expecting that it will be Jeremy Briand, who looked to be

:36:20. > :36:24.running quite nicely when we caught a glimpse of him going across the

:36:25. > :36:27.Suspension Bridge, we think it will be Jeremy Briand bringing home the

:36:28. > :36:33.bronze for Canada. His team-mates, Paula Findlay, Matthew Sharpe and

:36:34. > :36:40.Joanna Brown, they came here with high hopes of upsetting the racers

:36:41. > :36:43.from the home nation. They were ambitious and confident in their

:36:44. > :36:47.prerace interviews. But it looks like the Canadian team, who will be

:36:48. > :36:52.welcomed home shortly, will have to settle for bronze this afternoon.

:36:53. > :36:59.They left it to Jeremy Briand, the youngest member of the quartet, to

:37:00. > :37:05.swim, bike and run the anchor leg. He takes home the bronze for Canada.

:37:06. > :37:07.Lifted up by Matthew Sharpe. Great performance by the Canadians. I

:37:08. > :37:13.don't pick anybody was predicting them to get onto the podium. They've

:37:14. > :37:20.done really well, and good for them. We would expect to have seen Mark by

:37:21. > :37:25.now, I thought he got a bit of time into the Canadian guys. Here he is.

:37:26. > :37:35.Fourth place. Rounding out for the second Leeds team. Leeds II, Non

:37:36. > :37:38.Stanford, Gordon Benson, Lucy Hall and Mark Buckingham, a late entry

:37:39. > :37:46.into the race, bringing home fourth position. Such a late entry that he

:37:47. > :37:55.is wearing Joanna's suit. He has literally been drafted in at the

:37:56. > :38:00.last minute. One of the things we did not see on the last leg was that

:38:01. > :38:04.once it starts splitting up, these relays can blow apart. Not only

:38:05. > :38:09.athletes are on their own, they get exposed, people with stronger stuff

:38:10. > :38:14.make the most of it, people get exposed and lose time. This relay

:38:15. > :38:18.has completely blown apart. We haven't even seen the fifth team

:38:19. > :38:24.yet. Really interesting, and this is a completely new event that will be

:38:25. > :38:29.deciding Olympic medals. Interesting to watch. Victory for Leeds I, with

:38:30. > :38:35.Loughborough taking the silver. Canada took the bronze, and the

:38:36. > :38:39.Canadian team are at the Riverside with Ore.

:38:40. > :38:44.Congratulations, Team Canada! Thank you! You had a really fast race run,

:38:45. > :38:49.so you don't have to speak too quickly. Tell us how things kicked

:38:50. > :38:53.off. This is a brand-new event, you must have been pumped to get out

:38:54. > :38:56.there? I love relays, it is probably my favourite type of racing. Racing

:38:57. > :39:00.for a team and with a team is probably the most exciting thing you

:39:01. > :39:04.can do, you are racing for somebody other than yourself. It was absolute

:39:05. > :39:08.chaos in the day in the water, at the start, with the teams lining up.

:39:09. > :39:11.But the race played out the way we wanted it to you and I think the

:39:12. > :39:17.whole team did well. I'm really proud of all of my team-mates. You

:39:18. > :39:22.were coming here to spoil the British party, you have done just

:39:23. > :39:25.that, Canada on the podium? Yeah, we're pretty excited. We are a

:39:26. > :39:28.strong team, we were expecting to get on the podium. To come and

:39:29. > :39:34.execute that, it is important. We are stoked and happy. It was great

:39:35. > :39:38.to see you back racing. Tell us about where this could go, because

:39:39. > :39:42.we have an important couple of years to come for triathlon and mixed

:39:43. > :39:53.triathlon, where are we going to see Canada? I think Canada is really

:39:54. > :39:55.putting a big focus on the relay leading into the Commonwealth Games

:39:56. > :39:58.and the Olympics. We have a really young team of people, everybody is

:39:59. > :40:00.under 27, under 25. This short, fast racing really suits us. It's

:40:01. > :40:02.exciting that Canada are showing we are good at it and hopefully we can

:40:03. > :40:06.continue on that trajectory, competing with the Brits and the

:40:07. > :40:09.rest of the world. You're definitely heading in the right direction.

:40:10. > :40:13.Jeremy, it was an EU to finish things strong. But you had clear

:40:14. > :40:21.carpet in front and behind you. You must have enjoyed getting the bronze

:40:22. > :40:27.medal? It is hard, chasing and being chased. It is more fun, the mix of

:40:28. > :40:33.things. You have to be prepared for every scenario. Well done to all of

:40:34. > :40:37.you. You have got some time on the podium to make sure you enjoy, so

:40:38. > :40:43.Team Canada out, and income Team Loughborough. Come on in. Good to

:40:44. > :40:48.see you, Ben, Jody, Chris and Sophie. Let's talk to you, Ben.

:40:49. > :40:54.First things first, Loughborough, we were expecting big things and you

:40:55. > :40:59.have delivered? Well done. We have to be really happy with the result.

:41:00. > :41:02.Leeds were phenomenally strong, credit to them for a great

:41:03. > :41:06.performance. We are all happy. It's a shame on the last leg, Tom was

:41:07. > :41:10.immensely strong and I couldn't get across to him on the bike. Small

:41:11. > :41:14.mistakes I emphasised in such short racing. Unfortunately that is what

:41:15. > :41:18.happened today. I think we all performed fantastically. We will be

:41:19. > :41:23.going home with smiles on our faces. Tom Bishop did have a perfectly

:41:24. > :41:26.finished leg. You put down in a really good position, how did you

:41:27. > :41:30.enjoy it? The pressure was definitely on. We had a shot at

:41:31. > :41:34.taking it. We knew today that it was going to be a gamble to go for the

:41:35. > :41:38.win and that is the order we went in because we were going for the win.

:41:39. > :41:42.We came pretty close against a really strong team of Leeds.

:41:43. > :41:47.Congratulations to them. These guys did awesome today. Well done, let's

:41:48. > :41:51.talk to your team-mate Chris. You guys are coming together in a very

:41:52. > :41:54.different climate here. It is your trading partners, it is not quite an

:41:55. > :41:58.international. But you guys, Loughborough have already been on

:41:59. > :42:05.-- Loughborough have already been on the map, but great to racing team

:42:06. > :42:09.colours consumer Yes, we know each other, strengths and weaknesses, we

:42:10. > :42:13.know how to put a team together. It was good to be racing with the guys

:42:14. > :42:16.that you train with, just because we are all good friends. It makes it

:42:17. > :42:20.more enjoyable, a good team atmosphere. It also gives a bit back

:42:21. > :42:25.to the centre, the coaches, showing them how much it actually means, all

:42:26. > :42:30.of the support, the things that they offer, they do go a long way in

:42:31. > :42:33.training, and hopefully racing, which was good. Silver medal, more

:42:34. > :42:40.than a reward. Sophie, just as you finished your legs, is rooted out of

:42:41. > :42:48.you. You run a really good wanted a bike, tell us, how tough was it? It

:42:49. > :42:52.was hard. We had a bit of running over the last couple of weeks, it

:42:53. > :42:55.made it even harder. As if it wasn't hard enough. Like you say, you have

:42:56. > :42:58.to work together as a team and hopefully that the guys in a good

:42:59. > :43:03.position to set up the rest of the race, really. Well done to all of

:43:04. > :43:07.you. I will let you shift left and I will come in this side and say

:43:08. > :43:10.congratulations to Loughborough. Loughborough in second, Canada in

:43:11. > :43:16.third. Leeds taking things at the top. A really fantastic effort all

:43:17. > :43:21.around. I think it might be time for the medal ceremony.

:43:22. > :43:28.Yes, well, this has been a brilliant event. This was the problem suffered

:43:29. > :43:33.by Jeremy Briand at the start of the bike. He seemed to have a mechanical

:43:34. > :43:37.issue. That really cost him a chance to battle on behalf of Canada for

:43:38. > :43:45.the silver medal. Canada had to accept the bronze in the end, with

:43:46. > :43:48.the silver going to Loughborough I. The champions, Leeds I, we haven't

:43:49. > :43:52.heard from them yet but I think we will. We will watch the medal

:43:53. > :43:57.ceremony first, that we will hopefully hear from Georgia

:43:58. > :44:04.Taylor-Brown, Aaron Royle, and Tom Bishop. Above the magnificent war

:44:05. > :44:11.memorial, that commemorates the men of Nottingham who fell in both world

:44:12. > :44:19.wars. This is how Bishop won it, finally, for Leeds I. Having been

:44:20. > :44:26.given a solid lead at the start, from Jess Learmonth. Have a really

:44:27. > :44:31.good swim. -- had a really good swim. We can go back down to the

:44:32. > :44:34.river side and Ore has the team with him.

:44:35. > :44:45.We have with us the winners, Nottingham. A very generous round of

:44:46. > :44:49.applause for you, Team Leeds. Fantastic effort. Georgia, tell us

:44:50. > :44:53.how the race run for you? Really good, I didn't have a great swim.

:44:54. > :44:58.But then we just got a group together on the bike, worked

:44:59. > :45:02.altogether. On the run, it is a super fast run, so I was a bit

:45:03. > :45:06.behind at the start. Just kept it going and managed to pull it back.

:45:07. > :45:12.You seems to have extra energy coming down the bank? I think every

:45:13. > :45:14.body went out a lot harder than me and then we settled into the same

:45:15. > :45:19.pace. I started coming back on people. It was really good over

:45:20. > :45:23.there, lots of crowds, really fun. It must have been, as I was saying

:45:24. > :45:26.to Vicky, you are telling her how shattered you were after Stockholm,

:45:27. > :45:27.you had no energy left in your battery, and there you were, pushing

:45:28. > :45:38.to the end and leading out? I know, I am such a liar! I didn't

:45:39. > :45:43.think I had it in me so I'm quite surprised. It was good fun and the

:45:44. > :45:47.crowd helped. You just have to go and max out, nothing much else you

:45:48. > :45:52.can do, so you try and go flat out and try and not get penalties, that

:45:53. > :45:56.was my aim. No penalties and gold medal, seems like a good day. You

:45:57. > :46:00.set out to win, you had Leeds I on your shirt, and Tom, when you came

:46:01. > :46:05.out of the water there was no doubt in your mind what you would do. I

:46:06. > :46:09.knew I needed to get a gap on Ben, he's such a good runner, such a

:46:10. > :46:15.bright spot, I cannot live it down to the sprint finish, so I will see

:46:16. > :46:20.what I can get and came off the bike, but I still had to run hard. I

:46:21. > :46:24.enjoyed the last bit, the crowds were amazing. Did you expect to see

:46:25. > :46:28.him behind you after being so quick? I didn't look behind me on the out

:46:29. > :46:32.and back section, and I thought I've got a bit of a gap and keep on going

:46:33. > :46:37.and get a bit more and by the end, it was still not 100% sure of the

:46:38. > :46:40.bike but I made sure by the end it was a good one. Very quickly,

:46:41. > :46:43.because you were the last man standing on the carpet, describe

:46:44. > :46:48.what it was like for you to be able to take in the time, take in the

:46:49. > :46:52.applause and laid it out and take gold medal for Leeds I. It was

:46:53. > :46:56.great, from the start of my leg I was nervous and by the end I was so

:46:57. > :47:00.excited and proud to compete for Leeds. We don't compete for Leeds

:47:01. > :47:05.very often, this is the first time, usually the GB flag but this is the

:47:06. > :47:10.time we are representing where we train and spent most of our time.

:47:11. > :47:15.Well done to you. Honorary Brit today, Aaron. Like Tom said you are

:47:16. > :47:19.representing a region, and you were substituted to this team at the last

:47:20. > :47:26.minute so you made the right call. I was in Leeds II and Jonny Brownlee

:47:27. > :47:31.was a bit sick so I was trying to fill his shoes and I got a call-up

:47:32. > :47:36.to Leeds I which is a bonus. Non Stanford, you said beforehand that

:47:37. > :47:40.you would make sure you got one over on her, happy? Yeah, obviously. That

:47:41. > :47:44.doesn't happen very often so I've got to take everyone I can. Well

:47:45. > :47:48.done to all of you. I think we are going to send you off because you

:47:49. > :47:54.have a medal ceremony. If you don't mind, thank you very much, Leeds I,

:47:55. > :48:00.the winners today, congratulations. Come in on this site, Vicki, and

:48:01. > :48:05.then the coaches, Helen, after you. Helen can come into the camera shot

:48:06. > :48:10.any time she wants. That was lovely, just like that, musical chairs,

:48:11. > :48:15.Vicky and Alistair Brownlee are with us. Leeds I, routine win. They were

:48:16. > :48:19.the favourites and they evidently deserved to win. The way to look at

:48:20. > :48:26.the relay a lot of the time is you rarely win on the first few legs but

:48:27. > :48:29.you can lose it. The girls and Aaron just had to put Tom in the right

:48:30. > :48:33.position and put the chances in his favour and take out as many of the

:48:34. > :48:36.other teams as they could end in a perfect world they would have been

:48:37. > :48:41.alone but they were not. On the last leg Tom had to make the best of any

:48:42. > :48:44.opportunity given. Like you said he knew he would struggle in the last

:48:45. > :48:48.kilometre against Ben and that was right and he got the chance out of

:48:49. > :48:51.transition and saw Ben struggling in the first few hundred metres getting

:48:52. > :48:56.his feet in and took the opportunity and that is what won the race, that

:48:57. > :48:59.was the right decision to make. We see you doing that so often on the

:49:00. > :49:05.track, making split-second decisions and dropping people seemingly just

:49:06. > :49:09.like that. Were you impressed with his split-second decision-making?

:49:10. > :49:11.Definitely. I think so much of triathlon, or any sport, but

:49:12. > :49:14.triathlon because it is so complex and comes down to decision making,

:49:15. > :49:20.and he made the right decision. He could have backed up his run and

:49:21. > :49:24.waited for another opportunity but right then he put his head down and

:49:25. > :49:27.took the risk because then could have caught back up to him, or the

:49:28. > :49:30.Canadian guy could have helped a man that would have cost him on the run

:49:31. > :49:36.but it was the right thing to do. Like we saw, it paid off. Vicky,

:49:37. > :49:40.word on Loughborough and Ben Dijkstra finishing things off. A lot

:49:41. > :49:43.of the guys from Alistair talked about the danger, and Annie Emmerson

:49:44. > :49:46.as well, they had to put it out there but between them, those four

:49:47. > :49:50.showed real calibre that we should be excited about with the strength

:49:51. > :49:53.and depth of British triathlon. It is not that much of a surprise

:49:54. > :49:56.Loughborough with a strong team today, anybody who wasn't

:49:57. > :49:58.considering them for being contenders in this race probably

:49:59. > :50:03.hadn't looked enough into the depth of that team. Then on the final leg

:50:04. > :50:07.was always going to be a bit of a threat and the Leeds guys themselves

:50:08. > :50:10.said they didn't want to be in a head-to-head with him in the final

:50:11. > :50:14.hurdle, Tom didn't want to have to run a 1500 against him. It would

:50:15. > :50:18.have been interesting showdown but Tom made the brave and really good

:50:19. > :50:22.split-second decision to go out of transition and it paid off for them.

:50:23. > :50:25.Talking about the thrills and spills, we really saw it today,

:50:26. > :50:33.Alistair and I work in the transition for the most part

:50:34. > :50:35.watching the guys coming through the transition, the changeover, into the

:50:36. > :50:39.carpet, down the ramp and take a diving jump into the late. In 2020

:50:40. > :50:42.and 2018 Commonwealth Games on the gold Coast next year, we have some

:50:43. > :50:46.really lightning triathlon to look forward to, don't we? Definitely,

:50:47. > :50:50.that's one of the things we all enjoy about the relay, there is a

:50:51. > :50:57.lot to it, not just the fact it is a dangerous sport, ride, swim and run,

:50:58. > :51:00.there is a technical side of much of it we don't know yet. It's really

:51:01. > :51:05.interesting and we have a lot to learn more we talk so much in

:51:06. > :51:08.athletics about getting the bat on around the 4x100 metres, compared to

:51:09. > :51:12.this, get everything in a small box can not get any penalties, which

:51:13. > :51:15.cost your team, small things can have massive consequences, and going

:51:16. > :51:20.forward to the Olympics in a few years' time, the fact it could be

:51:21. > :51:24.based on Olympic medal. You talked about that in commentary, we have

:51:25. > :51:27.seen 68 athletes out here who will want to be on the start line for

:51:28. > :51:31.2020 and especially with the opportunity to win another metal.

:51:32. > :51:37.What were the most exciting events across the whole Olympic spectrum?

:51:38. > :51:41.I'm so happy mixed relay has been put into the Olympics, for personal

:51:42. > :51:45.reasons obviously. I think there is a brilliant chance we could come

:51:46. > :51:49.away with a medal, and not just a medal, with our best team out there

:51:50. > :51:53.we would win a gold medal, that is another gold medal for Team GB and

:51:54. > :51:57.us as an athlete cohort as well. But it's such a great race to watch,

:51:58. > :52:01.great spectator event, I think everybody enjoys seeing the mixed

:52:02. > :52:10.relay so being in the Olympics is fantastic. The crowd really seem to

:52:11. > :52:13.have enjoyed themselves and Alistair and I talked about the fact you were

:52:14. > :52:16.at the very start, in the infancy of this event, is this what you

:52:17. > :52:19.imagined it would be like? Yeah, the theory of having a mixed relay

:52:20. > :52:21.before we knew it would be in the Olympics was great, bring in crowds,

:52:22. > :52:24.get people who enjoy watching triathlon, or who have never seen

:52:25. > :52:27.triathlon before, into watching triathlon. So many times anecdotally

:52:28. > :52:31.I have met people in the supermarket and said I love watching the relay,

:52:32. > :52:35.why isn't there a more? The theory was sound but it is how to put that

:52:36. > :52:39.in place. There were lots of factors to overcome, what should the

:52:40. > :52:45.TeamSpeak? Starting from a blank sheet of paper. Should it be? The

:52:46. > :52:48.crowds and the teams make it special. It is a natural

:52:49. > :52:53.amphitheatre on the water, lovely loop around the water so you can see

:52:54. > :52:58.so much stuff from the same place. Long may it continue. I like the

:52:59. > :53:01.idea of an Alistair Brownlee Q session in the supermarket and we

:53:02. > :53:04.will be there for the next one! We were going to try and quiz you on

:53:05. > :53:11.the questions the viewers have been sending in. Meantime we have a medal

:53:12. > :53:12.ceremony to enjoy, Matt Chilton will talk you through it.

:53:13. > :53:18.Thank you, Ore Oduba. talk you through it.

:53:19. > :53:22.Thank you, Ore 12 athletes will receive their medals. We had 17

:53:23. > :53:27.teams start the competition, some fared better than others. There were

:53:28. > :53:31.some mistakes, there were some comedy moments at times, one or two

:53:32. > :53:36.of the dives into the River Trent post changeover were comical and

:53:37. > :53:46.enjoyed by the spectators in front of the war memorial.

:53:47. > :53:50.ANNOUNCER: The gifts will be presented by the leader of the

:53:51. > :53:56.Nottingham City Council councillor John Collins.

:53:57. > :54:01.COMMENTATOR: The presentation party is being introduced. And the

:54:02. > :54:11.Canadian quartet will step up for the bronze medal. Joanna Brown. She

:54:12. > :54:16.started things off for Canada with a superb performance. She has been so

:54:17. > :54:20.consistent all season, particularly in the last two or three races when

:54:21. > :54:26.she has really found her feet and confidence, and she was joined in

:54:27. > :54:31.the team by the experienced Matthew Sharpe, the multiple World Triathlon

:54:32. > :54:35.Series winning Paula Findlay, and the untried and untested but

:54:36. > :54:40.ultimately successful Jeremy Briand, who did enough despite a mechanical

:54:41. > :54:43.issue leaving transition on his bike. He did enough to secure the

:54:44. > :54:50.bronze medal for the visiting Canadians. They have made their

:54:51. > :54:54.visit to Nottingham worthwhile. They leave with the bronze medals from

:54:55. > :55:03.the British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup. Loughborough I with a couple of

:55:04. > :55:11.World Triathlon Series regulars. Jodie Stimpson, Commonwealth Games

:55:12. > :55:16.champion, collecting her silver medal. Back from injury and

:55:17. > :55:20.delighted to be back in the sport. Sophie Coldwell, started things off

:55:21. > :55:24.for Loughborough I with an excellent performance and she is from right

:55:25. > :55:28.here in Nottingham. It is a home race for Sophie Coldwell, the

:55:29. > :55:32.22-year-old. Chris Perham, excellent performance from the young man from

:55:33. > :55:39.Portland in Dorset and then Ben Dijkstra and doing enough, the

:55:40. > :55:42.18-year-old. Solid runner. Tom Bishop paid him plenty of

:55:43. > :55:48.compliments about his running in his interview. Bishop knew that he had

:55:49. > :55:49.to be strong to see off the challenge from Dijkstra, who brought

:55:50. > :56:03.the silver home for Loughborough I. Leeds is very much the powerhouse of

:56:04. > :56:07.British triathlon, so it is fitting that the team from Leeds I other

:56:08. > :56:14.first-ever Accenture British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup champions.

:56:15. > :56:18.Georgia Taylor-Brown, 23-year-old from Manchester. The Australian

:56:19. > :56:23.Aaron Royle, who had such a fantastic bike. Jess Learmonth, who

:56:24. > :56:28.has had a sensational season, and then it was rounded out to secure

:56:29. > :56:39.the gold by 26-year-old Tom Bishop, another man from these parts. They

:56:40. > :56:47.are the 2017 Mixed Relay Cup champions, the team from Leeds I.

:56:48. > :56:55.They have all got medals and cuddly toys.

:56:56. > :57:18.Accenture British Mixed Relay Cup will now be presented.

:57:19. > :57:26.The British Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup goes to the team from Leeds I.

:57:27. > :57:34.And there is champagne as well. As it is lots of regional teams

:57:35. > :57:42.involved I don't know if we are going to have any anthems. But it is

:57:43. > :57:48.fitting that Robin Hood, I think it is the real Robin Hood, is there in

:57:49. > :57:53.the city of Nottingham. He might get a soaking shortly as the bottles are

:57:54. > :57:58.open. There we are, the gold medal to Leeds I, the silver for

:57:59. > :58:03.Loughborough I and the bronze medal for Canada.

:58:04. > :58:08.We got there eventually. The Champagne moment for every single

:58:09. > :58:12.one of them up there on the medal podium. Unusual, of course, to not

:58:13. > :58:18.have a national anthem at these events. But I'm sure Leeds are very

:58:19. > :58:23.proud of where they come from and I am sure there is some kind of DT

:58:24. > :58:26.they can sing up there as they enjoy their moment. Congratulations to

:58:27. > :58:30.Leeds, Loughborough and Canada, the three medallists from the Mixed

:58:31. > :58:34.Relay Cup today. And from Nottingham, we will go to Newcastle

:58:35. > :58:34.next weekend because there is another great sporting events to

:58:35. > :59:02.enjoy. Make sure you join us for the great

:59:03. > :59:06.North run next Sunday, always a spectacular event. The sun is

:59:07. > :59:09.usually shining up there in the north-east, and we look forward to

:59:10. > :59:13.having you there with us. Let's bring things back to the here and

:59:14. > :59:17.now. Olympic medallists Alistair Brownlee and Vicky Holland I hear.

:59:18. > :59:21.We ask you at the top of the programme to send in your questions

:59:22. > :59:24.for the elite triathletes. How they deal with it, how they get through

:59:25. > :59:30.it, how they enjoy it. We have one coming from Craig, this one is for

:59:31. > :59:36.you, Alistair. How do you deal with not being able to train while you

:59:37. > :59:41.are injured? We know that was very difficult. Very badly is the easy

:59:42. > :59:44.answer. I think I have had a month not training, and it is tough. On

:59:45. > :59:50.Friday, I went out and did six hours of training. The next day I was

:59:51. > :59:53.laying on my back, and was laying there for weeks unable to move.

:59:54. > :59:56.Firstly you have a massive gap in your life that is normally filled my

:59:57. > :00:01.exercise. You just have to you see it as getting the chance to do

:00:02. > :00:06.things you don't normally do. Like what? Relax, I was reading a lot. I

:00:07. > :00:11.caught up on a lot of boring admin, I tried to do a jigsaw and failed. I

:00:12. > :00:14.built a steam train that my dad bought me for Christmas about five

:00:15. > :00:19.years ago. Slightly different things. Caught up with friends. What

:00:20. > :00:23.is good to know is that Alistair Brownlee hasn't quite prepared for

:00:24. > :00:28.life beyond the racing career. Putting jigsaws together is not

:00:29. > :00:31.going to fill all of the time. You're talking about putting off the

:00:32. > :00:36.surgery you had for some time, now is a good time, with next year in

:00:37. > :00:42.mind? Absolutely, there is never a perfect time. Once I realised it was

:00:43. > :00:45.going to be the best part of five or six months, the return to fitness,

:00:46. > :00:49.if I'm going to do it, I've got to do it in the middle of the year to

:00:50. > :00:55.have a good winter and be ready to go next year. I made a decision on

:00:56. > :01:00.that basis, I made the decision and I'm glad I've done it. We will see

:01:01. > :01:04.how it turns out. First-day off crutches, you would not know with

:01:05. > :01:12.this guy will stop we need him fully fighting fit. Caitlin asked how do

:01:13. > :01:16.you manage your nutrition on a triathlon? Do you eat on the bike or

:01:17. > :01:23.run and what do you eat? Vicky Holland? Full English? Sunday roast?

:01:24. > :01:26.Yes, just put it on your bike. For me, most of the nutrition side of

:01:27. > :01:32.things comes pre-race, it is what you have eaten the night before,

:01:33. > :01:35.what you have eaten that morning. Full of carbohydrates, simple

:01:36. > :01:39.carbohydrates, easy to digest. When you are racing, there are very few

:01:40. > :01:43.opportunities to eat. You don't want to be eating many times during the

:01:44. > :01:47.race. It is a difficult process, if you can minimise it, it is better.

:01:48. > :01:52.For me, I like to have some energy fluid in my drinks bottles. I have

:01:53. > :01:58.one drinks bottle with energy drink, one with just water. I am getting

:01:59. > :02:01.some calories there. I also have energy gel which isolated to the top

:02:02. > :02:07.of my bike, very sophisticated. I usually take that two thirds of the

:02:08. > :02:10.way through. You will occasionally see athletes, triathletes on their

:02:11. > :02:16.bikes, with things strapped to them, like a one-man band. For you, you

:02:17. > :02:22.increased the distances of your races, before you had the surgery,

:02:23. > :02:27.have you got anything extra? A full chicken? You do have to take more

:02:28. > :02:32.on? You do, you have to take more carbohydrates, more fluids and sold

:02:33. > :02:34.to balance it out. That has taken a bit of experimentation and I don't

:02:35. > :02:38.think I got it right in the three races that I did. It is just

:02:39. > :02:43.violence. More water, more carbohydrates, how you get them in.

:02:44. > :02:47.Olympic distance, I would normally do that with gels. A four our race,

:02:48. > :02:52.you have to look at taking quite a lot of gels. I was trying to swap

:02:53. > :02:55.that with other forms of carbohydrates. That was tough. I

:02:56. > :02:58.think it is a work in progress. In a lot of ways, it is not rocket

:02:59. > :03:05.science, just balancing input and output. From the end of the spectrum

:03:06. > :03:09.to the start, the Dean Williams has tweeted, she is competing in her

:03:10. > :03:14.first triathlon next Sunday, OK? Today has been lovely, actually.

:03:15. > :03:17.Before the elite race, there was 350 runners and riders all going in a

:03:18. > :03:20.mass participation rates, it was so lovely to see people getting

:03:21. > :03:25.involved. Nadine Angerer is doing exactly that next Sunday. Just once

:03:26. > :03:32.advice for a beginner, Vicky? The first thing is to remember you're

:03:33. > :03:36.doing it for enjoyment. Don't get too stressed, don't allow lives to

:03:37. > :03:39.take over. Suddenly you have chosen to do, something for fun and it

:03:40. > :03:43.should be fun. It is fun. Don't build it into something it isn't.

:03:44. > :03:50.Have a practice over the next week of just doing simple things, like

:03:51. > :03:55.transitions. Getting a wet suit off as quickly as you can, popping your

:03:56. > :03:59.shoes off in transition two, that will really help, knowing your

:04:00. > :04:04.routine. Do you render your first triathlon? I think it was actually

:04:05. > :04:10.in Nottingham. Welcome home! I was eight or nine. It was in 1996 or 97.

:04:11. > :04:14.It was in Nottingham, a leisure centre somewhere with some fields

:04:15. > :04:18.outback, that we cycled around. And then we ran around it and that was

:04:19. > :04:23.it. I can't tell you any more than that, it was a long time ago. But

:04:24. > :04:26.you were an example, that was the point, you can start slow and the

:04:27. > :04:33.double Olympic champion. Let's bring one more in. Stuart on the hashtag

:04:34. > :04:37.#bbctriathlon, he wants us to shed some light on the swimming style

:04:38. > :04:44.adopted by triathletes. In his opinion, it seems to create a lot of

:04:45. > :04:48.splash? There are a couple of thought, traditional endurance

:04:49. > :04:51.swimming style of a long relaxed stroke, long reach, flexible

:04:52. > :04:55.shoulders, really good catch and glide at the front of your stroke to

:04:56. > :05:00.catch as much water as you can. Then the triathlon school of thought is

:05:01. > :05:03.that you need a bit more chopped, throw your arms in and catch the

:05:04. > :05:07.water as quickly as you can, and it is just about your turnover and

:05:08. > :05:10.propulsion. If you on over and push back as quickly as you can. There

:05:11. > :05:14.are no right answers. People do different ways and you even see the

:05:15. > :05:19.sport of swimming changing. If you watch swimming now, the guys that

:05:20. > :05:22.swim 50 and 100 at the World Championships, it is short, high

:05:23. > :05:27.turnover, that is the way to go a triathlon for the first 200 metres.

:05:28. > :05:34.After that, in a more relaxed stage, is really personal. Just efficiency,

:05:35. > :05:38.I guess. All about efficiency! Minimum energy, maximum output.

:05:39. > :05:42.Let's bring in some of the other Leeds triathletes in a moment.

:05:43. > :05:49.Everybody has been getting inspired. This is how you get involved if you

:05:50. > :05:53.are a first timer. Unite get Inspired as the BBC sports campaign

:05:54. > :05:57.to help you get active. It is on the BBC sport website and you can find

:05:58. > :06:01.inspirational stories from people like you, as well as hints, tips and

:06:02. > :06:06.over 70 practical guides to help you give something a go. There is also

:06:07. > :06:11.an activity finder, to help you find something to try near you. Just get

:06:12. > :06:22.up, get inspired and get active. The triathlon family is expanding

:06:23. > :06:28.every second of the day. Leeds II, some of their members with us. Mark

:06:29. > :06:34.Buckingham, where were you about two days ago? On a flight back from

:06:35. > :06:38.Canada, enjoying myself, relaxed. What happened in the last 24 hours?

:06:39. > :06:42.Jonny Brownlee was supposed to be in your position. How did that play out

:06:43. > :06:47.for you? You got a phone call? I was on the sofa about 1pm yesterday,

:06:48. > :06:54.relaxed, enjoying myself. They said, can you go down to Nottingham and

:06:55. > :07:00.race instead of Jonny I got his dry suit, rebranded it, and here I am.

:07:01. > :07:14.That is literally Jonny Brownlee's dry suit. Papered over with

:07:15. > :07:18.Buckingham. Did you enjoy it? I did, I've only done two before, one in

:07:19. > :07:24.Hamburg, and what they have done rivals that easily. What an event.

:07:25. > :07:28.It helped, the sunshine and stuff. But thousands of spectators and a

:07:29. > :07:33.great atmosphere. It has been mega. Talking about hamburgers, you have

:07:34. > :07:37.been there and done that. How does this compare? # ago the support was

:07:38. > :07:41.incredible. I can't believe how many people got involved. I really

:07:42. > :07:45.enjoyed it. I was really nervous before. First race in a long time, I

:07:46. > :07:49.wasn't sure how I would go. I loved it until the last 400 metres. I

:07:50. > :07:56.couldn't believe how packed the stands were. Great to hear them

:07:57. > :08:03.cheering for you. Last time we did a triathlon was in Leeds, Nottingham

:08:04. > :08:06.giving them a run for their money. With Leeds across your chest, you

:08:07. > :08:12.properly wouldn't say that, but they are a great crowd? They are a good

:08:13. > :08:18.second-best! A proud man from Leeds, how was it? Really enjoyed it, good

:08:19. > :08:26.to be in the mix. Team Leeds one and two, sadly we ended up with fourth.

:08:27. > :08:29.It was great to be a part. Congratulations to both of you.

:08:30. > :08:34.Leeds on top of the podium. We will take that as a win? Thank you very

:08:35. > :08:39.much. Enjoy your afternoons. We will talk to you guys in a moment or so.

:08:40. > :08:44.Let's talk a little bit about where we think this will go. You were

:08:45. > :08:49.there at the start. What is the ideal, what do we want to bring

:08:50. > :08:52.build this into? I were talking about the World Championships in

:08:53. > :08:57.Hamburg, there's more than comparing to it? Definitely. One of the ideas

:08:58. > :09:02.at the start was to use the analogy of the FA Cup. Your local team,

:09:03. > :09:05.Nottingham, Leeds district team could go through the rounds and get

:09:06. > :09:09.the chance to compete against the best teams in the world in what

:09:10. > :09:12.would be a final or whatever. One of the things that we really struggled

:09:13. > :09:16.with at the start was what the teams should be. It could have been any

:09:17. > :09:20.construct, they could be counties, northern England and Southern, it

:09:21. > :09:24.could have been countries, cities, centres, whatever. That is the idea.

:09:25. > :09:29.Hopefully in the next few years it will go to three four years, and

:09:30. > :09:32.then after that a number of events, plus rounds, with the opportunity

:09:33. > :09:36.for literally any clubs to work their way up the rounds to qualify

:09:37. > :09:41.and race will you national title, the triathlon cup, at the end of the

:09:42. > :09:44.season. Where would you like this event to be? It is great to see

:09:45. > :09:49.younger athletes, junior athletes competing on the same stage. Also,

:09:50. > :09:56.the likes of Canada coming here and doing really well, internationally,

:09:57. > :09:59.it has some real pull? We had four International teams coming and

:10:00. > :10:03.racing. We can expand on that and get more and more nations wanting to

:10:04. > :10:06.come, with the inclusion of the mixed relay in the Olympic Games,

:10:07. > :10:10.people are going to want the opportunity to race. Mixed relay is

:10:11. > :10:13.not something that is done a huge amount of the world stage. People

:10:14. > :10:16.don't get the opportunity to practice is short and fast

:10:17. > :10:21.changeovers. Everything that goes into mixed relay that makes it

:10:22. > :10:24.unique. Having an event like this, year-on-year, and more rounds, as

:10:25. > :10:27.Alistair mentioned, it means we are going to get other nations in and

:10:28. > :10:32.hopefully get some of the world's best as well as our own. Absolutely.

:10:33. > :10:36.We have started something in Nottingham. The crowd, have you

:10:37. > :10:40.enjoyed yourselves? Of course they have! And a Leeds flag as well. They

:10:41. > :10:43.were the winners today. We have run out of time. You are done, as are

:10:44. > :10:54.we. Good afternoon, thank you! # How you like me now? The

:10:55. > :11:03.first-ever British triathlon Mixed Relay Cup is under way in

:11:04. > :11:24.Nottingham. There is no room for slip-ups in this level of racing.

:11:25. > :11:39.At this distance, it is a monument. . Tom Bishop crosses the line to win

:11:40. > :11:44.it for Leeds I. Princess Diana's been

:11:45. > :11:46.killed in a car crash. The tragedy that affected

:11:47. > :11:49.so many of us... ..imagined through the lives

:11:50. > :11:55.of four remarkable characters.
