2:02:23 > 2:02:25CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:02:28 > 2:02:31Hello, I'm Alan Davies, welcome to Apres-Ski!
2:02:31 > 2:02:33CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:02:35 > 2:02:40So, desperately bad luck for Elise Christie today in the speed skating,
2:02:40 > 2:02:43but in the curling yesterday, the Team GB women won the bronze,
2:02:43 > 2:02:46and this afternoon, the men won silver.
2:02:48 > 2:02:51There are, of course, four people in each curling team,
2:02:51 > 2:02:55so I like to think of it as four silvers and four bronzes.
2:02:55 > 2:02:58The Scots have now got so many medals, come September
2:02:58 > 2:03:00they may actually become the official Scottish currency.
2:03:00 > 2:03:02LAUGHTER
2:03:02 > 2:03:05Earlier in the Sochi week, in the women's bobsleigh,
2:03:05 > 2:03:07Brazil had a spectacular crash...
2:03:13 > 2:03:17Luckily no-one was hurt, but it was a close shave for the Brazilians.
2:03:17 > 2:03:19LAUGHTER
2:03:20 > 2:03:24Czech snowboarder Eva Samkova won gold in the snowboard cross,
2:03:24 > 2:03:28wearing her trademark hand-drawn moustache. I have to admit,
2:03:28 > 2:03:31I did miss some of her run cos I nipped out of the room.
2:03:31 > 2:03:34Don't know why, but for some reason I really fancied a packet of Pringles.
2:03:34 > 2:03:36LAUGHTER
2:03:36 > 2:03:38International violinist Vanessa Mae
2:03:38 > 2:03:41actually completed her run in the women's slalom this week.
2:03:41 > 2:03:44She finished way behind the winner. People said she was slow,
2:03:44 > 2:03:46but to be fair, in the men's event
2:03:46 > 2:03:48almost exactly the same time difference separated
2:03:48 > 2:03:51the winner from the bloke who came last, Nigel Kennedy.
2:03:51 > 2:03:52LAUGHTER
2:03:52 > 2:03:55There were rumours this week in Russia that Vladimir Putin
2:03:55 > 2:03:59and his Olympic gymnast girlfriend might have secretly tied the knot.
2:03:59 > 2:04:01LAUGHTER
2:04:01 > 2:04:03Didn't do that one in the Scouts!
2:04:03 > 2:04:05LAUGHTER
2:04:05 > 2:04:10Also this week, Team GB's 18-year-old half-pipe skier,
2:04:10 > 2:04:13Rowan Cheshire, suffered a bad fall in training.
2:04:13 > 2:04:16Ouch. After her accident,
2:04:16 > 2:04:19poor old Rowan was unconscious for nearly two hours,
2:04:19 > 2:04:22which means she missed the entire first half of Vanessa Mae's run.
2:04:22 > 2:04:24LAUGHTER
2:04:24 > 2:04:28So, the Games are nearly over, but have they taken the world by storm?
2:04:28 > 2:04:32There's only one way to find out - check the World Wide Web.
2:04:32 > 2:04:36For example, how exciting did web people find the action-packed
2:04:36 > 2:04:38skiing moguls event?
2:04:56 > 2:04:59APPLAUSE
2:04:59 > 2:05:02Yeah, and if you think that's impressive,
2:05:02 > 2:05:06while that was happening, R2D2 won the luge.
2:05:06 > 2:05:07Let the games begin!
2:05:08 > 2:05:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:05:18 > 2:05:20On Apres-Ski this week, please welcome
2:05:20 > 2:05:22Team GB's skiing queen Chemmy Alcott,
2:05:22 > 2:05:24top comedians Mark Watson and Sara Pascoe,
2:05:24 > 2:05:28and Team Jamaica's cool runner, bobsleigher Winston Watts.
2:05:28 > 2:05:31CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:05:31 > 2:05:32Here they all are.
2:05:32 > 2:05:36Lovely to have you all here.
2:05:36 > 2:05:39Chemmy, you're just back from Sochi and you are all in one piece.
2:05:39 > 2:05:41You're not in a plaster cast.
2:05:41 > 2:05:43I know, I'm actually less injured than when I started.
2:05:43 > 2:05:45It was, erm, a pretty good effort, that.
2:05:45 > 2:05:48You were, six months ago, what was broken?
2:05:48 > 2:05:51Erm, this leg was shattered, so I now have a metal nail,
2:05:51 > 2:05:5515-inch nail through my tibia, and I bear through...
2:05:55 > 2:05:57I'm bionic, basically. It's quite cool.
2:05:57 > 2:06:00Well, I'm glad you're in one piece.
2:06:00 > 2:06:02LAUGHTER Sorry, sorry.
2:06:02 > 2:06:05And Winston, you're just back from Sochi as well.
2:06:05 > 2:06:09- You're an old hand at the Olympics, really.- It is.
2:06:09 > 2:06:12- Your fourth time an Olympian? - Yes, that's my fourth, yes.
2:06:12 > 2:06:15How did it compare with the other ones? Enjoy yourself?
2:06:15 > 2:06:19Erm, I really do enjoy myself, it's, erm, it's more amazing,
2:06:19 > 2:06:24it's more to talk about than the past three that I've been to.
2:06:24 > 2:06:28- This is so much more, so much more interesting too.- That's fantastic.
2:06:28 > 2:06:31And Sara, you're a big fan of the ice, I know that you were
2:06:31 > 2:06:34once a member of the Romford Raiders Ice Hockey Club, am I right?
2:06:34 > 2:06:36Oh, gosh. Do you know what?
2:06:36 > 2:06:39No-one's allowed to tell my mum this, I wasn't, no. I, er...
2:06:39 > 2:06:41LAUGHTER
2:06:41 > 2:06:43- Whoa!- But, no, let me tell you, basically there was,
2:06:43 > 2:06:46I went to ice hockey because there was a disco afterwards
2:06:46 > 2:06:48and I was trying to kiss a boy.
2:06:48 > 2:06:52And I spent three years pretending that I was in an ice hockey team.
2:06:52 > 2:06:54- Three years?- Yeah! - And Mark Watson, of course,
2:06:54 > 2:06:57you're a doyenne of all winter sports, are you not?
2:06:57 > 2:06:58People imagine that cos
2:06:58 > 2:07:00physically I'm quite similar to someone like Winston.
2:07:00 > 2:07:02LAUGHTER
2:07:02 > 2:07:05You hear what he said, someone like me?
2:07:05 > 2:07:07Actually, no, I didn't even get as close as Sara.
2:07:07 > 2:07:10I had to do ice skating at school cos they had a brief thing where
2:07:10 > 2:07:14they thought it was a sort of useful activity for people to learn, but I
2:07:14 > 2:07:18couldn't stand up so they had to give me a chair to, er, skate around with.
2:07:18 > 2:07:22And tuning into the Olympics now, very few of the competitors do that.
2:07:22 > 2:07:25Well, it's marvellous to have all our team here.
2:07:25 > 2:07:30Now, listen, it is official, curling is the new rock & roll.
2:07:30 > 2:07:34We had a brilliant bronze for Eve Muirhead and her team yesterday!
2:07:34 > 2:07:37And now a shiny silver for Dave Murdoch and the lads.
2:07:37 > 2:07:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:07:39 > 2:07:41'Canada lead 9-3.
2:07:41 > 2:07:46'There's a discussion going on with the British team.
2:07:46 > 2:07:47'And that's it.'
2:07:47 > 2:07:50'Don't see them going to go and finish this, this is game over.'
2:07:50 > 2:07:53'They are the World Champions, and now they could be the Olympic
2:07:53 > 2:07:56'bronze medallists if this stone is right from Eve Muirhead.
2:07:56 > 2:08:00'They're sweeping it. They're watching it.
2:08:00 > 2:08:02'Eve's coming down, looking a bit anxiously,
2:08:02 > 2:08:05'they've got to keep working this. There's no chance to celebrate yet,
2:08:05 > 2:08:08'but the stone's going to get there,
2:08:08 > 2:08:13'and the brushes go in the air, and Britain have won the bronze medal.'
2:08:13 > 2:08:15CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:08:16 > 2:08:20Of course, here at the BBC there's really only one man to go to
2:08:20 > 2:08:22when you need a bit of curling commentary,
2:08:22 > 2:08:26former Olympic middle-distance athlete Steve Cram!
2:08:26 > 2:08:28CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:08:29 > 2:08:32- Steve Cram.- Hi, Alan. Hi, everybody.
2:08:32 > 2:08:34Thank you for joining us from Sochi.
2:08:34 > 2:08:36Steve, you're such a brilliant curling commentator,
2:08:36 > 2:08:39every time you commentate we win medals. How do you do it?
2:08:41 > 2:08:44I don't know, you know, it just comes naturally.
2:08:44 > 2:08:46Erm, yeah, it's been a long gig here at the curling
2:08:46 > 2:08:49but I'm pleased that we won two medals, 27 matches Jackie Lockhart
2:08:49 > 2:08:54and I did, most of them containing British teams, either men or women.
2:08:54 > 2:08:57Yeah, I'm kind of hoping I finish top of the league of commentators.
2:08:57 > 2:09:00I'm up against Paul Dickinson in the sliding, cos, of course,
2:09:00 > 2:09:02he had Lizzie Yarnold with the gold medal,
2:09:02 > 2:09:05and still has the four-man bob to go, so he might just pip us.
2:09:05 > 2:09:08Must have been a bit cold in there, but you're from the North East,
2:09:08 > 2:09:10so just T-shirt and shorts for you, I suppose?
2:09:10 > 2:09:12LAUGHTER
2:09:13 > 2:09:15You'd be surprised how warm it is, it's, erm,
2:09:15 > 2:09:17not even down on the ice it's that cold.
2:09:17 > 2:09:20You've probably seen the guys playing in their t-shirts,
2:09:20 > 2:09:22the Canadians today, the Buff Boys, in their t-shirts.
2:09:22 > 2:09:25Warm work down there on the ice with all the sweeping,
2:09:25 > 2:09:28and, actually, up in the commentary positions it's quite warm as well.
2:09:28 > 2:09:30We're not exactly sitting half naked but it's not that cold.
2:09:30 > 2:09:33They call it "chess on ice."
2:09:33 > 2:09:36Have you found it that complicated and cerebral?
2:09:38 > 2:09:39- That means clever.- Yes.
2:09:39 > 2:09:42LAUGHTER
2:09:42 > 2:09:44APPLAUSE
2:09:47 > 2:09:50You love big words, don't you?
2:09:50 > 2:09:52Erm, no, it is, seriously, it's hard to get into the, erm,
2:09:52 > 2:09:54and understand the intricacies of it.
2:09:54 > 2:09:56Of course, there's a bit of technique
2:09:56 > 2:09:58or a lot of technique in terms of delivering the stone.
2:09:58 > 2:10:00But it's the strategy of the sport,
2:10:00 > 2:10:03I think, which has drawn everybody in, and so many options around.
2:10:03 > 2:10:06Erm, it is chess on ice cos they're thinking three or four moves ahead
2:10:06 > 2:10:08and I've had to use Jackie a lot
2:10:08 > 2:10:11to try and help me understand what's going on at times,
2:10:11 > 2:10:13but I've learned a lot over the last, ooh, 11 days or so.
2:10:13 > 2:10:15And I've been fascinated.
2:10:15 > 2:10:17I know back home people have been getting into the curling
2:10:17 > 2:10:19and it's been gathering an audience,
2:10:19 > 2:10:21and I hope people have enjoyed it and we've got our two medals.
2:10:21 > 2:10:23So, after this success, Steve,
2:10:23 > 2:10:25there will be huge queues at the ice rinks from tomorrow.
2:10:25 > 2:10:27Do you think people will be out curling?
2:10:27 > 2:10:28No more football shirts,
2:10:28 > 2:10:31everyone will want a Manchester United brush now, will they?
2:10:33 > 2:10:37They certainly won't want to wear an Arsenal shirt, will they? Erm...
2:10:37 > 2:10:38LAUGHTER AND GROANS
2:10:38 > 2:10:41Oh, Steve!
2:10:41 > 2:10:42I knew he couldn't get through it!
2:10:44 > 2:10:45You're going to be back in time
2:10:45 > 2:10:48for the League Cup final anyway, that's the main thing.
2:10:48 > 2:10:51I am, I'll be there next weekend, don't you worry, mate.
2:10:51 > 2:10:54We probably will get as much of a kicking maybe as our guys did
2:10:54 > 2:10:56against Canada today, but we don't care, we're at Wembley.
2:10:56 > 2:11:00No, I hope so. I know there's been a massive response to the curling
2:11:00 > 2:11:02and I know there's been lots of try-out sessions,
2:11:02 > 2:11:05and I think they're pretty much all sold out. You're right.
2:11:05 > 2:11:08The only thing is, you know, south of the border,
2:11:08 > 2:11:10there aren't too many opportunities to go and curl.
2:11:10 > 2:11:14There's ice rinks around but I guess ice hockey and ice skating.
2:11:14 > 2:11:16But we're hoping that the sport is going to get a lot more
2:11:16 > 2:11:18youngsters involved, and who knows?
2:11:18 > 2:11:20Next time... We've got some good teams here, mind you.
2:11:20 > 2:11:23Eve and the girls will be back, and the guys will probably be back
2:11:23 > 2:11:26in four years' time, but we want to continue the success in the future.
2:11:26 > 2:11:28Steve, thank you so much for joining us
2:11:28 > 2:11:32and good luck to Sunderland next weekend. Steve Cram!
2:11:32 > 2:11:34CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:11:39 > 2:11:41So, everybody is talking about curling,
2:11:41 > 2:11:45but the question is, can you speak curling?
2:11:45 > 2:11:47THEY SCREAM
2:11:49 > 2:11:51THEY SHOUT AND GRUNT
2:11:58 > 2:12:01THEY SCREAM
2:12:05 > 2:12:07No.
2:12:07 > 2:12:08APPLAUSE
2:12:10 > 2:12:13I would like to talk seriously about the sport of curling now.
2:12:13 > 2:12:17If we can just take a closer look at the brilliance of David Murdoch
2:12:17 > 2:12:19and his so-called shot of the century
2:12:19 > 2:12:22that got Team GB into the semis.
2:12:22 > 2:12:25COMMENTARY: A must-make shot. Cannot afford to miss this.
2:12:27 > 2:12:28TEAM MEMBER YELLS
2:12:28 > 2:12:30The stone is away. Nothing he can do now.
2:12:30 > 2:12:32The sweepers have got it.
2:12:32 > 2:12:33THEY YELL
2:12:33 > 2:12:34Is it right?
2:12:37 > 2:12:41He's done it! He's done it! A brilliant shot.
2:12:43 > 2:12:46Absolutely fantastic.
2:12:46 > 2:12:50I do have some technology here to help us understand
2:12:50 > 2:12:52what made that shot so special.
2:12:52 > 2:12:54I love playing with this thing.
2:12:54 > 2:12:56There is the line behind which he stood.
2:12:56 > 2:12:59The sweepers came down either side.
2:12:59 > 2:13:03They knocked the stones away.
2:13:03 > 2:13:05LAUGHTER
2:13:05 > 2:13:07Stop me if I'm being too technical.
2:13:11 > 2:13:14One of my favourite movies of all time is Cool Runnings
2:13:14 > 2:13:17and in Sochi we have just seen the sequel, starring Winston Watts.
2:13:17 > 2:13:19AUDIENCE WHOOPS
2:13:22 > 2:13:25COMMENTARY: Winston Watts and Marvin Dixon.
2:13:27 > 2:13:28Away we go.
2:13:32 > 2:13:34Now get it together, Winston.
2:13:34 > 2:13:36Hold it together.
2:13:37 > 2:13:39Around the corner to the left-hand side.
2:13:39 > 2:13:413.11... that's fine.
2:13:41 > 2:13:46They certainly are in last place. There you go.
2:13:47 > 2:13:49WINSTON CHUCKLES
2:13:53 > 2:13:56You were out there competing.
2:13:56 > 2:14:00You were in the two-man bob this time.
2:14:00 > 2:14:03You did say, I have a quote from you from a recent interview,
2:14:03 > 2:14:04"We came here as an underdog,
2:14:04 > 2:14:07"we are hungry men and hungry men are angry."
2:14:07 > 2:14:10You're not hungry now, are you? You all right?
2:14:10 > 2:14:14I am losing some weight right now, I am burning too many calories.
2:14:14 > 2:14:17I was thinking you looked a bit flimsy!
2:14:17 > 2:14:19Just like two days.
2:14:19 > 2:14:23You had a bit of misfortune when you got to Sochi, you lost your luggage?
2:14:23 > 2:14:25Definitely.
2:14:25 > 2:14:29It's from day one until the last day,
2:14:29 > 2:14:33it's still a tragedy getting to Sochi.
2:14:33 > 2:14:36When the bobsleigh turned up and it went around the carousel,
2:14:36 > 2:14:38was it faster?
2:14:39 > 2:14:46It was. They tampered with the blade, that's why we didn't go that fast.
2:14:46 > 2:14:52- That will be the beginning of Cool Runnings 2.- It's the sequel.
2:14:52 > 2:14:54Previously you were in the four-man bob.
2:14:54 > 2:14:58In the four-man bob, you've got the driver, the brake man,
2:14:58 > 2:15:00number three is the pusher.
2:15:00 > 2:15:02What does number two do?
2:15:02 > 2:15:08He is also a pusher also, they call those middle guys the two power guys that stand at the side of it.
2:15:08 > 2:15:12Basically they sit in the bob and enjoy the ride down.
2:15:12 > 2:15:16- They sit in... - Their job is so easy.
2:15:17 > 2:15:1915 metres in, they get in and sit down!
2:15:20 > 2:15:25Do you have to be a certain weight, does that help if you are bigger?
2:15:25 > 2:15:27What we try to do is,
2:15:27 > 2:15:30the sled and the crew has to weigh a certain amount.
2:15:30 > 2:15:35But if you put weight... the crew has so much weight on, well,
2:15:35 > 2:15:37you have to take the weight out of the sled.
2:15:37 > 2:15:39- So no sound system, then.- Yeah.
2:15:39 > 2:15:43- You can't have the subwoofer, the amplifier...- Packed lunch!
2:15:43 > 2:15:47- We like the duh-duh-duh...- Of course!
2:15:47 > 2:15:51I suppose you drop your suitcases off at the hotel before.
2:15:51 > 2:15:56You have said, "We are as serious as athletes as the Germans."
2:15:56 > 2:16:00- Exactly. - You might not have met many Germans.
2:16:00 > 2:16:04Over the years, Jamaica team has had the fastest team on ice.
2:16:04 > 2:16:10You know, after, I retired after the 2002 Games,
2:16:10 > 2:16:12continuing my normal life.
2:16:12 > 2:16:17No exercise for bobsleigh, just exercise to still keep in shape.
2:16:17 > 2:16:22It was hard for me to do this in two years, not even two years,
2:16:22 > 2:16:25a year and couple of months after they qualify.
2:16:25 > 2:16:31All these guys have been doing this for four years to be qualified.
2:16:31 > 2:16:35Impressive. Winston is 46.
2:16:37 > 2:16:41There was a suggestion recently that possibly Usain Bolt might move
2:16:41 > 2:16:44over to the bobsleigh when he is finished with the sprinting.
2:16:44 > 2:16:46Any possibility of that?
2:16:46 > 2:16:50I ask him while I was in Jamaica, we were doing shooting together.
2:16:50 > 2:16:54I said, how about coming and trying bobsleigh?
2:16:54 > 2:16:59Um... and he looked up in the air, looking at the plane or something,
2:16:59 > 2:17:02and he said, I don't think so.
2:17:02 > 2:17:04I just don't like the cold.
2:17:04 > 2:17:08Ladies and gentlemen, thank you to Winston Watts.
2:17:08 > 2:17:11CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:17:14 > 2:17:16We've had Great British success at Sochi,
2:17:16 > 2:17:19but there were some other countries there too.
2:17:19 > 2:17:21My absolute favourite event of the Games has been
2:17:21 > 2:17:24the Snowboard Cross and I just loved the gold-medal winning
2:17:24 > 2:17:27performance of the Czech Republic's Eva Samkova.
2:17:27 > 2:17:29COMMENTARY: Samkova takes a little look back
2:17:29 > 2:17:32and had a tiny little wobble as she did.
2:17:32 > 2:17:36Keep your eyes on their board. It is like they are writhing salmon.
2:17:36 > 2:17:39Dominique Maltais looking very smooth.
2:17:39 > 2:17:42Tracking off the last berm, into the jump.
2:17:42 > 2:17:45It is going to be Eva Samkova over the last jump into the finish
2:17:45 > 2:17:47line for the gold medal.
2:17:47 > 2:17:50An absolute masterclass from start to finish.
2:17:53 > 2:17:55Eva Samkova.
2:17:55 > 2:17:59Destroying the field in the Snowboard Cross.
2:17:59 > 2:18:01What I love about her is the dignity and composure she brought
2:18:01 > 2:18:03to the medal ceremony!
2:18:05 > 2:18:08An afternoon at the flower ceremony.
2:18:08 > 2:18:12The next day, there she is, still going at the medal ceremony,
2:18:12 > 2:18:15no sobbing while your flag goes up for your snowboarders.
2:18:15 > 2:18:19And I'm happy to say we can speak to Eva Samkova live from Sochi.
2:18:19 > 2:18:20CHEERING
2:18:20 > 2:18:22Hello!
2:18:24 > 2:18:27Thank you so much for joining us.
2:18:27 > 2:18:30The moustache is looking particularly good today.
2:18:30 > 2:18:32Thank you so much!
2:18:33 > 2:18:36Don't often get to say that...
2:18:36 > 2:18:39Don't often get to say that to a woman.
2:18:39 > 2:18:43Do you have your medal with you, your gold medal there?
2:18:43 > 2:18:45- Yeah, it's here.- Ohhh!
2:18:45 > 2:18:47CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:18:49 > 2:18:53That is nearly as big as your face!
2:18:53 > 2:18:57Yeah, and also I got a big face, so it's pretty big!
2:18:59 > 2:19:02I don't suppose you have Wagon Wheels in the Czech Republic?
2:19:02 > 2:19:06The press said that Vladimir Putin was going around hugging
2:19:06 > 2:19:09the female medal winners.
2:19:09 > 2:19:12Is that why you put the moustache on, to put him off?
2:19:14 > 2:19:16No, no!
2:19:18 > 2:19:24It just gives me a laugh and it is for show.
2:19:24 > 2:19:26Every race is a show, so...
2:19:26 > 2:19:30When did you first wear the moustache?
2:19:30 > 2:19:37It was 2011, the first World Championships in La Molina.
2:19:37 > 2:19:41And it was just like...
2:19:41 > 2:19:44I just wanted to draw it. And that was all.
2:19:44 > 2:19:48And it was one of the best results at the time.
2:19:48 > 2:19:51So I thought it gave me good luck.
2:19:51 > 2:19:57Well, now, Eva, I have been trying some moustache work myself.
2:19:59 > 2:20:00SHE LAUGHS
2:20:00 > 2:20:03Here we go. If you think that's good, wait till you see this.
2:20:03 > 2:20:05Ready for this?
2:20:05 > 2:20:06Oh, yes!
2:20:06 > 2:20:09GOD SAVE THE QUEEN PLAYS
2:20:14 > 2:20:16Your event, the Snowboard Cross,
2:20:16 > 2:20:19I do not know if you are aware, is the most dangerous
2:20:19 > 2:20:23event in all of the Olympics, not just the Winter Olympics,
2:20:23 > 2:20:25the summer Olympics as well.
2:20:25 > 2:20:28You have a 35% chance of injury whenever you race.
2:20:28 > 2:20:31Do you think about that all?
2:20:31 > 2:20:33Not at all.
2:20:33 > 2:20:37I just ride and it is pretty easy for me.
2:20:37 > 2:20:40Like training,
2:20:40 > 2:20:44two days before a race, it was really tough.
2:20:44 > 2:20:49- But the race was just good fun. - It all went to plan.
2:20:49 > 2:20:52Back home in the Czech Republic,
2:20:52 > 2:20:56what has the reaction been to your gold medal?
2:20:56 > 2:21:00I don't know yet. We are flying 23rd,
2:21:00 > 2:21:05but I just heard that I am like a hero of the Czech Republic now.
2:21:05 > 2:21:08- It's weird for me!- I'm sure you are.
2:21:08 > 2:21:11You are a hero here, never mind the Czech Republic!
2:21:11 > 2:21:15You have said modestly that your sport is just physics,
2:21:15 > 2:21:17do you believe that?
2:21:17 > 2:21:23Yes, sure, because my coach believes that, so I do as well,
2:21:23 > 2:21:26because it is physics.
2:21:26 > 2:21:31It is physics up to a point, but there's also courage and skill
2:21:31 > 2:21:34and we are so pleased that you could join us.
2:21:34 > 2:21:36Ladies and gentlemen, Eva Samkova! Thank you!
2:21:36 > 2:21:39CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:21:42 > 2:21:44The Winter Olympics are not just about gold medals,
2:21:44 > 2:21:46things don't always go well.
2:21:46 > 2:21:48The American speed skating team have been shit!
2:21:50 > 2:21:54And have blamed their new suits for their dire results.
2:21:54 > 2:21:58One of the problems, apparently, was with a back vent in the suit.
2:21:58 > 2:22:02Team GB have in the past tried suits with a back vent.
2:22:06 > 2:22:08AUDIENCE: Ohhh!
2:22:14 > 2:22:16Oh, my God!
2:22:16 > 2:22:19Not even from the Olympics!
2:22:19 > 2:22:23I saw her last year and she still gets reminded about that.
2:22:23 > 2:22:26- MARK:- It's the sort of thing people will remind you about.
2:22:26 > 2:22:30Very, very recent. So, Winston, has that ever happened to you?
2:22:30 > 2:22:33Anything ever come out of your suit inappropriately?
2:22:33 > 2:22:35No, we try not to protect it.
2:22:35 > 2:22:37We try not to let that happen.
2:22:37 > 2:22:39You would not be able to show that!
2:22:42 > 2:22:46Another team from the Caribbean had a bad time at the Olympics.
2:22:46 > 2:22:50The team from the island of Dominica.
2:22:50 > 2:22:53They are actually New Yorkers and he is a hedge-fund manager.
2:22:53 > 2:22:56Gary and Angelica Di Silvestri.
2:22:56 > 2:22:59It has been suggested they might have bought their way
2:22:59 > 2:23:01into the Winter Olympics.
2:23:01 > 2:23:04Sadly, well, I say sadly, when they got to Sochi,
2:23:04 > 2:23:08neither of them actually managed to compete in the cross country.
2:23:08 > 2:23:10Gary got gastroenteritis.
2:23:10 > 2:23:13His illness occurred when he was showering in his hotel and
2:23:13 > 2:23:16"brown water came out of the faucet".
2:23:16 > 2:23:18And then, later on, out of Gary.
2:23:21 > 2:23:24He did not make it past the start line,
2:23:24 > 2:23:26but he did have a few practice runs!
2:23:26 > 2:23:29Practice runs! Eh?
2:23:29 > 2:23:31Practice runs!
2:23:31 > 2:23:33Yes!
2:23:37 > 2:23:39I am so proud!
2:23:39 > 2:23:41Later that same day,
2:23:41 > 2:23:45his wife Angelica managed to break her nose in training.
2:23:45 > 2:23:49She said that she crashed after going round Terrible Corner.
2:23:49 > 2:23:52It's a bit like something out of Winnie the Pooh.
2:23:52 > 2:23:54This is Eeyore's house, this is Terrible Corner,
2:23:54 > 2:23:57and this is Pooh Corner, where your husband lives!
2:23:58 > 2:24:05In more news from Sochi, New Zealand snowboarder Rebecca Torr complained
2:24:05 > 2:24:08there weren't enough athletes on Tinder, the infamous dating app.
2:24:08 > 2:24:10She tweeted...
2:24:19 > 2:24:23Mmm. I wonder if we could find out if her wish came true, Winston.
2:24:23 > 2:24:28I met her the night before she got on the plane
2:24:28 > 2:24:33and she could not even look at us, she just kept smiling.
2:24:33 > 2:24:38There is Rebecca, making her choice.
2:24:40 > 2:24:43- She has got three to choose from! - Three to choose from.
2:24:43 > 2:24:47Shy blokes, so you couldn't really exploit the opportunity.
2:24:47 > 2:24:50You know, I can stand on my own...
2:24:50 > 2:24:54So, it's the end of the Olympics. Have you got any highlights?
2:24:54 > 2:24:56What are you taking away from the week?
2:24:56 > 2:24:58Winston, what was your highlight from Sochi?
2:24:58 > 2:25:03It's nothing much because we did not have much time on the ice.
2:25:03 > 2:25:08It was nothing much there for me to do.
2:25:08 > 2:25:13I am much more mature now and most people are young people,
2:25:13 > 2:25:16so I just tried to keep with them as much as I can.
2:25:16 > 2:25:21The media were all over us, especially me, so I tried not
2:25:21 > 2:25:28to be going all around and the media catch me doing something that...
2:25:28 > 2:25:30Some "activities".
2:25:30 > 2:25:32Chemmy, for you, did you have a nice time?
2:25:32 > 2:25:37For me, just to be part of this historic Team GB was amazing.
2:25:37 > 2:25:41To end my last Olympics as part of the most successful team for a long
2:25:41 > 2:25:42time is amazing.
2:25:42 > 2:25:47Also, six months beforehand, I was having surgery and could not walk
2:25:47 > 2:25:51so to show people that whatever knocks you down you can keep getting
2:25:51 > 2:25:54back up and to finish within two seconds of the leader
2:25:54 > 2:25:56on an Olympic downhill, I am very proud of that.
2:25:56 > 2:25:58CHEERING
2:25:58 > 2:26:01You're right to be proud. You should be proud.
2:26:01 > 2:26:05We're proud of you. Mark, a highlight from the Games?
2:26:05 > 2:26:07It has been inspirational for normal people
2:26:07 > 2:26:12because there is an awe about the summer Olympics but someone
2:26:12 > 2:26:14won a gold that had never done it three years ago,
2:26:14 > 2:26:17she entered with a metal leg, somebody that's an
2:26:17 > 2:26:20international class athlete draws a moustache on.
2:26:20 > 2:26:24It gives you hope you can mess about and still achieve this!
2:26:24 > 2:26:27- Sarah?- I agree with Mark.
2:26:27 > 2:26:31The characters have been amazing and it is about adversity.
2:26:31 > 2:26:35The summer Olympics is all things that human beings already do,
2:26:35 > 2:26:37running, jumping and throwing stuff.
2:26:37 > 2:26:40The Winter Olympics is, you are falling down a mountain
2:26:40 > 2:26:43and you have a metal tray.
2:26:43 > 2:26:47The lake is frozen. Go and dance on it with knives on your feet!
2:26:47 > 2:26:50Seeing how people can actually cope.
2:26:50 > 2:26:53Everything is profoundly dangerous and ridiculous
2:26:53 > 2:26:55but that is why we love it.
2:26:55 > 2:26:59Thank you all so much. We've run out of time.
2:26:59 > 2:27:00Thank you, Chemmy Alcott, Mark Watson,
2:27:00 > 2:27:03Sara Pascoe and Winston Watts.
2:27:03 > 2:27:05CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:27:09 > 2:27:11But you know what?
2:27:11 > 2:27:17Chatting to Eva about the snowboarding has got me motivated.
2:27:17 > 2:27:18After all, how hard can it be?
2:27:20 > 2:27:24APPLAUSE
2:27:24 > 2:27:27Oh, God! Please don't let me die!
2:27:27 > 2:27:28Can you get to the bottom?
2:27:28 > 2:27:31Ohh! Oooh!
2:27:31 > 2:27:35ALAN SHRIEKS
2:27:35 > 2:27:38So that's it, it's almost all over in Sochi!
2:27:38 > 2:27:41Team GB has done brilliantly.
2:27:41 > 2:27:43We are so proud of everybody,
2:27:43 > 2:27:46whether they finished on the podium or in hospital.
2:27:46 > 2:27:49Although we hear that the Post Office has refused to commemorate
2:27:49 > 2:27:52Lizzy Yarnold's gold medal with a gold postbox in Sevenoaks.
2:27:52 > 2:27:55But to honour her victory, they have arranged for all parcels marked
2:27:55 > 2:27:58"fragile" to be thrown down a bob-sleigh track.
2:27:58 > 2:28:02To ensure that it really has been a drug-free Olympics,
2:28:02 > 2:28:06the Olympic Committee has promised to keep 2,000 urine samples
2:28:06 > 2:28:07for eight years.
2:28:07 > 2:28:10That is one fridge you really don't want to break down!
2:28:10 > 2:28:13To obtain urine samples from 2,000 people,
2:28:13 > 2:28:17they just took a handful of peanuts from the bowl in the hotel bar.
2:28:17 > 2:28:18AUDIENCE: Ohhh!
2:28:18 > 2:28:21Looking forward to the final of the ice hockey on Sunday.
2:28:21 > 2:28:24According to the rules, if there's a tie, the teams play an extra 20
2:28:24 > 2:28:27minutes, known as the Sudden Victory period.
2:28:27 > 2:28:29As opposed to Sudden Death, which is
2:28:29 > 2:28:33what Putin laid on for the Russian team when they got knocked out.
2:28:33 > 2:28:36During the Games, there had been reports of problems
2:28:36 > 2:28:39with the water supply in the Olympic village,
2:28:39 > 2:28:41but the Russian Deputy Prime Minister denied this, saying,
2:28:41 > 2:28:45"We have surveillance footage from the hotels showing people turning
2:28:45 > 2:28:47"on their showers without problems."
2:28:47 > 2:28:50And if you'd like to catch up with all the latest action from the
2:28:50 > 2:28:52showers, it's on the Red Button now.
2:28:52 > 2:28:55The next Olympics will be held in South Korea.
2:28:55 > 2:28:58Kim Jong-un will be pleased as he's North Korea's best skier,
2:28:58 > 2:29:03and figure-skater, and snowboarder and ice hockey team!
2:29:03 > 2:29:07So, that's it from these Winter Olympics. I'm Alan Davies,
2:29:07 > 2:29:09thanks for watching Apres-Ski. Good night!
2:29:09 > 2:29:11CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
2:29:11 > 2:29:13Whoaa!
2:29:14 > 2:29:17Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
