:00:47. > :00:53.Afternoon and welcome to coverage of the European Athletics champ

:00:53. > :00:59.ship from Helsinki. Normally we have to wait four years, but a

:00:59. > :01:04.change of format means it is just two years since Barcelona and that

:01:04. > :01:11.was some Championship for the British team. Mo Farah, fit,

:01:11. > :01:21.healthy, confident. Mo Farah takes the gold for Britain for the first

:01:21. > :01:31.time and Thomson makes it a one-two. Mark Lewis-Francis has been been

:01:31. > :01:35.

:01:35. > :01:45.given the silver. What a story that is. Third place and bronze medals,

:01:45. > :01:52.representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It's huge!

:01:52. > :02:02.Massive! This day is about Phillips Idowu and Britain has two gold

:02:02. > :02:02.

:02:03. > :02:12.medals. Christian Malcolm is going for gold! My goodness! And Lemaitre

:02:13. > :02:16.

:02:16. > :02:26.has been given it. And he is the European champion. The gold medal

:02:26. > :02:37.

:02:37. > :02:45.is Andy Turner. The men's 400 metre final. He has taken the silver.

:02:45. > :02:55.Jenny Meadows gets the bronze. It is going to be a fight to the line.

:02:55. > :03:02.He is digging deep. Rivers trying to get there, Lewandowski gets it.

:03:02. > :03:10.Green is taking the last hurdle. Green gets the gold, wam the silver.

:03:10. > :03:14.One-two for Great Britain, one-two for Wales. This is brave and fast,

:03:14. > :03:24.Jessica Ennis heading for home. Jessica Ennis heading for Spanish

:03:24. > :03:30.

:03:30. > :03:37.gold. Perry shake drayton is hunting a silver for Britain. Can

:03:37. > :03:47.she kick for home? She is coming strong again. And Germany get

:03:47. > :04:00.

:04:00. > :04:10.It's Russia, Belgium, Britain, Germany. Here comes Rooney. Can he

:04:10. > :04:11.

:04:11. > :04:15.get there? Russia take gold, Britain silver. Mo Farah kicking

:04:15. > :04:21.again from the front. Look at this from Mo Farah, he is destroying

:04:21. > :04:27.them in the home straight. It is going to be double gold and the

:04:27. > :04:32.double European champion, Mo Farah, does it again. Double gold for Mo

:04:32. > :04:40.Farah and the most successful European Championships for the

:04:40. > :04:43.British team. Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson were there. It was a

:04:43. > :04:49.great championships? Yes we look back at those pictures, it makes

:04:49. > :04:52.you smile. What a great team that was. You can see there was a lot of

:04:53. > :05:00.support and of course, we had massive anticipation for what can

:05:00. > :05:05.happen this year. We will leave the elephant in the room until the end

:05:05. > :05:09.about we talk about whether it is a good idea to have the European

:05:09. > :05:14.Championships every two years. It is a very different approach now?

:05:14. > :05:19.Yes we talked how successful those championships were. These were not

:05:19. > :05:24.about the medals, but giving the opportunity to the British athletes

:05:24. > :05:29.on the cusp. Just looking for selection for London. That needed

:05:29. > :05:32.that opportunity to compete again. You know it was about making sure

:05:32. > :05:36.the selectors had the opportunity to really give them a final

:05:36. > :05:41.opportunity to compete. Because it has been a tough year for the

:05:41. > :05:49.athletes. Perhaps not the fireworks of Barcelona, but there is plenty

:05:49. > :05:56.at stake and plenty to look forward to. Mo Farah was the king of Spain.

:05:56. > :05:59.In el Helsinki he is just defending his 5,000 metre crown. Rhys

:05:59. > :06:08.Williams fell at the Olympic trials and has to perform to gain

:06:08. > :06:13.selection for London. He is in the 400 metre hurdles. Jo Pavey's

:06:13. > :06:20.Olympic selection is assured after winning in Birmingham. Today she

:06:20. > :06:30.runs over 10,000 metres. In the high jump, Robbie Grabarz has been

:06:30. > :06:33.

:06:33. > :06:40.the revelation of 2012. He is the world No 2. And Lawrence Okoye will

:06:40. > :06:46.hope to make an impression in the discuss final. We have had four

:06:46. > :06:56.days of action. The foremated is a mixture of highlights and live

:06:56. > :07:11.

:07:11. > :07:18.So plenty to look forward to there. Slebs dilemmas, in your event,

:07:18. > :07:25.Colin, you have the interesting dilemma between Will Sharman and

:07:25. > :07:29.Andy tusher. -- Turner. They have said to Will, you have a chance. So

:07:29. > :07:33.go out there, perform well and let's see what happens. You must

:07:33. > :07:38.remember wirl's been injured and coming back into form. This is a

:07:39. > :07:44.good opportunity for him to show what status he is at. It is a tough

:07:44. > :07:52.race for him and it is not easey. There are five or six guys who

:07:52. > :07:57.could go under 13.4. So a big race. Our first live action, we can go to

:07:57. > :08:05.Helsinki and the women's 1,500 Helsinki and the women's 1,500

:08:05. > :08:15.metres. The athletes are already on the track. Better conditions than

:08:15. > :08:45.

:08:45. > :08:55.they have offered in the past picked up a bronze in Istanbul.

:08:55. > :08:59.

:08:59. > :09:09.That was Harrer you saw there. Mishchenko, the Ukrainian, always

:09:09. > :09:10.

:09:10. > :09:15.good in a slower race. Gorbunova and the other Russian up there in

:09:15. > :09:25.the rankings. But they haven't shown the form they showed in

:09:25. > :09:29.

:09:29. > :09:35.Russia. There is the defending champion, Fernandez. Just gone

:09:35. > :09:40.straight by her to introduce Khaleyeva. I wouldn't write

:09:40. > :09:50.Fernandez off, but she hasn't been in great form this year. The two

:09:50. > :09:51.

:09:52. > :09:57.Russians will be difficult to beat. The women's 1,500 metre final.

:09:57. > :10:04.Charlene Thomas was Britain's only representative and ran poorly and

:10:04. > :10:10.was disqualified for stepping on the inside of the track. Even the

:10:10. > :10:14.disstance -- distance runners have had problems with the bend and I

:10:14. > :10:24.think Charlene was probably happy to be disqualified. So no British

:10:24. > :10:26.

:10:26. > :10:32.representative in this final. The early leader is Khaleyeva. Corinna

:10:32. > :10:39.Harrer, who has developed into a good athlete, Germany have found

:10:39. > :10:49.themselves a decent 1,500 metre runner. But is is not that quick is

:10:49. > :10:51.

:10:51. > :10:56.it? No, one of the athletes you pin pointed was Cakir, who is back in

:10:56. > :11:06.fifth place. Just out of shot. She could be a danger. World student

:11:06. > :11:08.

:11:08. > :11:13.games champion last year. Has run 402. Just behind Mishchenko. Bulut

:11:14. > :11:23.is the other Turk on the curve. But it is a steady pace and this could

:11:24. > :11:24.

:11:24. > :11:28.be a kicker's race over the last 400 metres. Qualification was like

:11:28. > :11:38.this and they have learned a lot about each other in the heats and

:11:38. > :11:39.

:11:39. > :11:44.Harrer, who has been outkicked by Hannah England earlier. Harrer

:11:44. > :11:51.looked good there. But she is not very quick in the home straight.

:11:51. > :11:59.And Gorbunova and the other Russian will try to control this. Not

:11:59. > :12:03.making their souper fast times tell. Muncan at the back. But they're

:12:03. > :12:08.tightly bunched. Mishchenko has been back and forwards in the pack.

:12:08. > :12:16.The defending champion, Fernandez, on the inside. But it start to pick

:12:16. > :12:26.up as Cakir goes to the front. haven't talked about Fernandez too

:12:26. > :12:27.

:12:27. > :12:34.much. She is back in sixth. You see the tall Stan yard -- Spaniard, she

:12:34. > :12:39.has not shown great form, but the defending outdoor 1,500 metre

:12:39. > :12:43.champion and the Spaniards generally excel in the middle

:12:43. > :12:51.distance events. They haven't done much at these Championships, but

:12:51. > :13:01.who knows what they can do by the time of the Olympics. Makestad

:13:01. > :13:04.

:13:04. > :13:09.gathering for an attack. So 400 metres to go. Check ir-- Cakir on

:13:09. > :13:14.the inside. It is the Turkish athlete, Cakir, who is attacking

:13:14. > :13:19.hard down the back straight. There is a big gap and Bulut is the only

:13:19. > :13:26.one trying to stay with her. The Russians fighting for what could be

:13:26. > :13:31.the bronze. They're a long way behind the two Turkish athletes.

:13:31. > :13:36.She kicks again and this is impressive running. Cakir may well

:13:36. > :13:45.add to the world indoor bronze she took in March. Completely

:13:45. > :13:49.destroying the field in this last 400 metres. It will be a Turkish

:13:49. > :13:56.one-two. Mishchenko in the bronze position. But this is Turkey's

:13:56. > :14:02.fourth gold and three have come in the middle and long distance. Bulut

:14:02. > :14:09.is second, Mishchenko is third. A very impressive last lap. That is

:14:09. > :14:19.why nobody could live with that. Goodness me. The Turkish athletes

:14:19. > :14:24.are taking these championships by storm. They had a good day

:14:24. > :14:32.yesterday, where they won a couple of golds and there is another one.

:14:32. > :14:38.Cakir, the European champion. Mishchenko ran bravely, but she was

:14:38. > :14:45.outclassed by a couple of Turkish Athletic laets. It was not a sprint

:14:45. > :14:55.finish, but just a sustained last 400 metres and to be Frank

:14:55. > :15:12.

:15:12. > :15:17.Fernandez just couldn't live with a mobile app! Asli Cakir-Alptekin,

:15:17. > :15:27.look at the distance between her and everybody else. The long-

:15:27. > :15:31.

:15:31. > :15:41.striding champion comes away. It was a very good last lap, 57

:15:41. > :15:45.

:15:45. > :15:53.seconds. You can see she is absolutely delighted with that. The

:15:53. > :16:03.Turkish have done incredibly well. They're just behind Britain in the

:16:03. > :16:13.medal standings at the minute, five medals in total. Anna Mishchenko, a

:16:13. > :16:16.

:16:16. > :16:20.big smile as she comes over the line. The Turkish team totally

:16:20. > :16:30.dominant on this last afternoon of the European Championships in

:16:30. > :16:40.

:16:40. > :16:48.Helsinki. Well, the women's hammer final is under way. This is the

:16:48. > :16:57.first round, and that is the longest throw we have seen. Sophie

:16:57. > :17:06.Hitchen throws in this rounds after Anita Wlodarczyk. Anita Wlodarczyk,

:17:06. > :17:16.who has been slightly overshadowed by the world record holder of late,

:17:16. > :17:17.

:17:17. > :17:21.that she was eliminated from this competition in the opening rounds.

:17:21. > :17:31.Sophie Hitchen came through in the last round of qualification. Anita

:17:31. > :17:35.

:17:35. > :17:42.Wlodarczyk takes a big lead, though. The Russians traditionally are very

:17:42. > :17:49.good. And she doesn't really use her legs are a great deal. But that

:17:49. > :17:59.again is over 70 metres. Only one other person has been over 70

:17:59. > :18:00.

:18:00. > :18:08.metres, Martina Hrasnova. But has now been achieved by three athletes

:18:08. > :18:18.now. Anita Wlodarczyk has got a big, big lead. You wonder if that is an

:18:18. > :18:22.

:18:22. > :18:29.unassailable advantage. There are cheers all round the stadium at the

:18:29. > :18:36.moment for the Turkish athletes doing their lap of honour, along

:18:36. > :18:41.with Anna Mishchenko. Asli Cakir- Alptekin has a world indoors

:18:41. > :18:51.bronze-medal, and now she is the outdoor European 1500 metre

:18:51. > :19:06.

:19:06. > :19:11.champion. I could build up for the far for the Turkish team. We will

:19:11. > :19:20.begin a review of the last four days by going back to day one, it

:19:20. > :19:29.was Mo Farah in the 5000 metres where he was defending his crown.

:19:29. > :19:39.Two laps to go. Mo Farah knows what he is going to do in this race, and

:19:39. > :19:49.he has stuck to it so far. So, no surprises for Mo Farah so far. This

:19:49. > :19:50.

:19:50. > :19:58.speed is really beginning to wind up. They'd been told German, who

:19:58. > :20:03.has a strong finish as well, is still there. Mo Farah is gradually

:20:03. > :20:13.turning the screw. The two Spaniards are not able to live with

:20:13. > :20:18.

:20:18. > :20:24.this. The Frenchman looks fairly comfortable in 4th place. They take

:20:24. > :20:30.the bell. Mo Farah is still leading, controlling from the front. This

:20:30. > :20:40.lap will be quicker. This is what he is good that. He is deceptively

:20:40. > :20:50.

:20:50. > :20:59.quick when he gets those legs 200 metres to go! He won the title

:20:59. > :21:05.two years ago in Barcelona, he was a double winner. He attacks the

:21:05. > :21:10.last 110 metres. He turns on the burners! It will be another gold

:21:10. > :21:20.medal for the man from Great Britain. What a start to his season

:21:20. > :21:22.

:21:22. > :21:30.in terms of championships! He takes the gold, retained his title. 53.69

:21:30. > :21:40.was the last lap. He just wind it up and wind it up, as he does. It

:21:40. > :21:44.is a very good rehearsal indeed. If the result could be the same in the

:21:44. > :21:54.5000 metres or the 10,000 metres at the Olympics, we would all be very

:21:54. > :21:54.

:21:54. > :22:00.happy indeed. No problems at all today for Mo Farah. Let's hope that

:22:00. > :22:10.he can take confidence from that. Let's hope that his coach will be

:22:10. > :22:18.

:22:18. > :22:23.delighted. There is the champion. Could you imagine a stadium full of

:22:23. > :22:33.80,000 people in London faced with the same situation, with Mo Farah

:22:33. > :22:40.

:22:40. > :22:46.leading with one lap to go in the Olympic final? Really impressive

:22:46. > :22:55.from Mo Farah, great acceleration. He is so smooth when he is moving

:22:55. > :23:03.at speed. It is just deceptive. People think they have got him, but

:23:03. > :23:06.you just can't get on terms with him. He has got so much speed.

:23:06. > :23:14.know the finishing speed that he will have to cope with in the

:23:14. > :23:20.Olympic Games. Some of the Africans are just as quick. That is a real

:23:20. > :23:30.confidence boost at just the right time for Mo Farah. So, a gold medal

:23:30. > :23:57.

:23:57. > :24:04.in his first major championship. Everything went to plan. It was

:24:04. > :24:09.nice to come out here and win, you know? I can remember in Gothenburg

:24:09. > :24:15.when I came so close and have to wait for years. What was that

:24:15. > :24:25.thinking about coming here? Mainly to defend my title,, during get a

:24:25. > :24:38.

:24:38. > :24:44.Steve Cram has come down from the third floor of the building, not

:24:44. > :24:48.Helsinki! What did Mo Farah gain from running here? I am not

:24:48. > :24:55.entirely sure. I think you wanted to retain his title more than

:24:55. > :25:01.anything else. I would have loved to have seen him running in the

:25:01. > :25:07.1500 metres. That would have been a good test. BUT his speed. It was

:25:07. > :25:12.impressive enough I do like it's sometimes when people are prepared

:25:12. > :25:18.to come to the championship and say this mean something to me, it is my

:25:18. > :25:22.title and I don't want anybody to take it away. He hasn't had a

:25:22. > :25:32.particularly difficult 10 days or so. He had a fairly comfortable

:25:32. > :25:34.

:25:34. > :25:44.5000 metres. Fingers crossed, everything goes right for the

:25:44. > :25:46.

:25:46. > :25:52.Olympics. I think he is in a good place. Everybody loves Mo Farah,

:25:52. > :26:02.but suddenly he was that bad day because he did his signature move

:26:02. > :26:03.

:26:03. > :26:07.down the home straight, and all this sudden he was the bad guy.

:26:07. > :26:15.think he has apologised everybody before. You have to be very selfish

:26:15. > :26:21.about your preparations. I don't think there was any one who was

:26:21. > :26:25.kept it at the final because of his place. I think it helped Rosemarie,

:26:25. > :26:31.because he didn't complicate things for the final on the day. You have

:26:31. > :26:39.to be selfish. If you want to win an Olympic gold medal you put your

:26:39. > :26:43.requirements first before everybody else. Let's put it behind us and

:26:43. > :26:49.look forward to the Olympics. American trials are going on at the

:26:49. > :26:59.same time as this. One athlete who performed very well, who looks like

:26:59. > :26:59.

:26:59. > :27:09.he will be a real challenger is Mo Farah's training partner.

:27:09. > :27:19.

:27:19. > :27:29.Farrell be delighted with Galen's performance. -- Mo Farah. I think

:27:29. > :27:30.

:27:30. > :27:37.Mo Farah will have text did Geelan to say well done, mate. You trained

:27:37. > :27:42.for a long time with the Olympic champion in 1992. He was one of

:27:42. > :27:48.your major competitors, but he was your training partner. There is an

:27:48. > :27:54.advantage because you know where you major rival is at, and due know

:27:54. > :27:59.their strengths and weaknesses. You know if you are not right on it at

:27:59. > :28:05.that particular moment in time, you're training partner will be

:28:05. > :28:14.ahead of you. I suffered from that at the 1992 Olympic Games. Mo Farah

:28:14. > :28:20.will have to be right on his game in the Olympic Games.

:28:20. > :28:26.interesting dynamic between those two, is Guy Lacombe beats Mo Farah

:28:27. > :28:35.in training a lot. I have watched them doing these heavy warm gowns

:28:35. > :28:40.that the do and Mo Farah is hanging on. Keel and does not have the

:28:40. > :28:50.speed at the end. If he starts to develop that, then he will become a

:28:50. > :28:59.

:28:59. > :29:06.genuine contender. Like to think Geelan, I think he is a contender.

:29:06. > :29:15.It must change the dynamic when you go to training camps together.

:29:15. > :29:19.have been really good for each other. The two of them really to

:29:19. > :29:29.work off each other, almost complement each other. When you get

:29:29. > :29:32.

:29:32. > :29:39.in a race, that goes out of the window. This special relationship!

:29:39. > :29:46.It will be up to the Kenyans and Ethiopians to disturb his finish on

:29:46. > :29:56.in some respect. That won't change. Mo Farah as the target on his back,

:29:56. > :29:57.

:29:57. > :30:07.that means that targets will focus on him, which may leave Geelan more

:30:07. > :30:46.

:30:46. > :30:56.free to go. Let's catch up with the sixth. It is a real opportunity for

:30:56. > :30:59.

:30:59. > :31:04.Julia Bleasdale to make a name for herself. Bleasdale of Britain

:31:04. > :31:09.perhaps heading for a medal. This could be a real feather in her cap

:31:09. > :31:15.and possibly the confirmation of Olympic selection as well. She

:31:15. > :31:24.couldn't hang on to Jo Pavey at the Championships. But now there is

:31:24. > :31:28.only five women looking as though they have an opportunity. Julia

:31:28. > :31:38.Bleasdale in a perfect position. There is a gap appearing. These

:31:38. > :31:42.

:31:42. > :31:49.could be the three medals here. The Russian could be dangerous.

:31:49. > :31:55.Bleasdale looks behind and thinks maybe I can't hang on to Moreira

:31:55. > :32:01.and Moreira starts to open up a gap. But there is certain Laylannamedal

:32:01. > :32:07.here for Julia. Moreira coming into the home straight. The legs are

:32:07. > :32:16.getting tired. They have got to keep the arms and knees pumping.

:32:16. > :32:21.Julia blaes dale is fighting. Moreira could be in danger and

:32:21. > :32:26.Kovalenko may get there. The Russian takes the gold. Moreira,

:32:26. > :32:31.well a photo finish for second and third and Julia Bleasdale, well it

:32:31. > :32:38.lacked as though the medal was there for the taking, just ran out

:32:38. > :32:44.of steam in the home straight and the fast finishing Kovalenko might

:32:44. > :32:52.have snatched the silver. In the distance it is sad to see Helen

:32:52. > :32:58.Clitheroe coming in. She has been just a stalwart of British

:32:58. > :33:06.athletics. There is the champion, Golovkina, as Helen Clitheroe

:33:06. > :33:12.crosses the line. Well what a final lap. It looked as though Julia

:33:12. > :33:19.Bleasdale was going to take the lead with 200 metres left.

:33:19. > :33:29.Challenging with Moreira, but what a last lap by the Russian. And that

:33:29. > :33:29.

:33:29. > :33:39.will be confirmed as a huge lifetime best for Julia Bleasdale.

:33:39. > :33:46.

:33:46. > :33:52.The two Russians there, Golovkina and Golovkina came through with the

:33:52. > :34:01.best time. A good race, Golovkina with a big finish. Kovalenko left

:34:01. > :34:06.it so late and snatched the silver from Moreira. A personal best for

:34:06. > :34:10.Julia Bleasdale. Helen Clitheroe, well that is a season's best but it

:34:10. > :34:14.won't be good enough and her Olympic dreams have gone with that.

:34:14. > :34:18.After the trials, I was disappointed and thought that shows

:34:18. > :34:23.what sort of shape I'm in. But I had this opportunity and I have

:34:23. > :34:27.worked hard the get that run in and I felt I diserved it to myself to

:34:27. > :34:33.give it one last try. It is not to be, but you know, I have done

:34:33. > :34:40.everything in my pourer to try and get back on the track and race this

:34:40. > :34:45.summer. So it is a bit too soon. gave it my best. I came here to be

:34:45. > :34:51.competitive and to get some more race practice. It was a scrappy

:34:51. > :34:58.race, a lot of pushing and barging and the bends made it difficult. So

:34:58. > :35:03.I got spiked early on. But I gave it my all. Just got to keep going

:35:03. > :35:09.and work on that final few laps. I know I can take it right to the end.

:35:09. > :35:15.know I can take it right to the end. But not this time. Julia Bleasdale

:35:15. > :35:21.has had quite a season. Yes she is one for woman the Olympic year has

:35:21. > :35:26.been a great incentive. She will be in the team at 10,000 metres. It

:35:26. > :35:31.may be the 10,000 is on the first night and we will see Jo Pavey

:35:31. > :35:36.running the 10,000 today. Both could end up doubling up. But Julia

:35:36. > :35:42.Bleasdale 18 months ago may not have expected this. But I felt

:35:42. > :35:46.sorry for her there. Denise a wor word on Helen Clitheroe. She would

:35:46. > :35:51.have loved to have finished her career in London. Yes she has had

:35:51. > :35:55.such a great career and she has worked hard. But it was not meant

:35:55. > :35:59.to be. When you have had injuries and missed a body of work, it just

:35:59. > :36:06.doesn't allow you to run the way you would like to. But she has been

:36:06. > :36:13.a great ambassador for the sport and a great inspiration. Now the

:36:13. > :36:17.women's 800 metres, perhaps one of our strongest events. Olympic

:36:17. > :36:25.selection is not straight forward. Jenny Meadows has been injured. She

:36:26. > :36:31.had to pull out and sheics plained -- she explained her decision.

:36:31. > :36:37.have had an ongoing injury. But I have worked very hard to put myself

:36:37. > :36:42.in this position. To get on the plane to come here to Helsinki with,

:36:42. > :36:47.with what I thought was a genuine medal shot. I didn't come here just

:36:47. > :36:52.to prove my fitness. I thought I could win. But the nature of my

:36:52. > :36:57.injury is just during the flight here it swelled up a lot. I haven't

:36:57. > :37:02.been able to run very much since I have got here pain-free. I haven't

:37:02. > :37:06.had the range in the Achilles and it needs a couple of days to calm

:37:06. > :37:14.down before I can resume training and I have just not got a couple of

:37:14. > :37:21.days until the 800 metres start. miss the Olympics in your own

:37:21. > :37:26.country would be doubly devastating. Yes that is why I have worked hard.

:37:26. > :37:31.I was always against the time scale and I have killed myself to get

:37:31. > :37:34.myself in the best shape. I knew I couldn't put spikes on to the last

:37:34. > :37:38.minute and all that hard work has been to compete in London. That has

:37:38. > :37:43.been the goal. Not just to compete in some races this year and I have

:37:43. > :37:49.got myself in that shape and I want to wear that British vest in the

:37:49. > :37:54.home Olympics. It is a fairy tale. So not to be there, it would mean

:37:55. > :37:57.this last six months has been in vain. So I have worked hard and I'm

:37:57. > :38:02.confident I can be in the Olympic stadium and put in a good

:38:02. > :38:10.performance. But yes, it is the discretion of the selectors now.

:38:10. > :38:20.Yes we can catch up with that final now. Linsey Sharpe ran and Gemma

:38:20. > :38:45.

:38:46. > :38:55.now. Linsey Sharpe ran and Gemma But is Linsey needs the A standard.

:38:56. > :39:02.

:39:02. > :39:12.This is our last chance. Mar Shay have a -- Maracheva, a new name,

:39:12. > :39:39.

:39:39. > :39:44.but the Russians have so many to dangerous. Gemma Simpson made this

:39:44. > :39:49.final two years ago and finished fifth on that occasion. Another one

:39:49. > :39:59.still with Olympic aspirations and need to run the time. She does have

:39:59. > :40:03.

:40:03. > :40:09.the A standard from last year. For the British selectors after this

:40:09. > :40:14.race it will be between the other two. Jny Meadows aggravated an

:40:14. > :40:20.injury problem and caused her not to be able to compete. Linsey

:40:20. > :40:30.Sharpe and Gemma Simpson, a chance to state their case in this 800

:40:30. > :40:31.

:40:31. > :40:36.metre final. Two laps of the track as ever. Will anybody want to take

:40:36. > :40:46.this on? The British athletes want it to be quick. The Russians can

:40:46. > :40:48.

:40:48. > :40:57.run fast but may not want to lead it. Maracheva is leading. It is not

:40:57. > :41:07.very quick. Maracheva and the Belarus athlete coming through. It

:41:07. > :41:11.

:41:11. > :41:19.is about 28.5, so not that slow. Linsey Sharpe drifting to the back.

:41:19. > :41:24.Maracheva leads for Russia. The Belarusian in second. The two

:41:24. > :41:30.British athletes, Simpson moving through into fourth. They hit the

:41:30. > :41:34.bell with Linsey Sharp at the back. So what damage now can Gemma

:41:34. > :41:39.Simpson create? That is faster than Gemma's gone through this year and

:41:39. > :41:44.she is in a good position. Will she have the strength? Linsey Sharp has

:41:44. > :41:52.stayed off the pace. She will finish fast, but a long way from

:41:52. > :41:58.the action for the medals. Maracheva leading the way. The

:41:58. > :42:07.other Russian will be a huge danger. There is a big gap to fourth. Two

:42:07. > :42:12.Russians, one from Belarus and look at Arzhakova. Now having to come

:42:12. > :42:16.and attack on the outside. Maracheva still leading, Arzhakova

:42:16. > :42:22.looking dangerous. She has the strength to take the gold. Linsey

:42:22. > :42:27.Sharp is finishing quickly in fourth. She might yet get close to

:42:27. > :42:32.a medal. But the Russian wins and Linsey Sharp is finishing quickly

:42:32. > :42:36.and takes the silver. She takes the silver with a storming run in the

:42:36. > :42:46.home straight. I don't think, I don't think it is going to be quick

:42:46. > :42:47.

:42:47. > :42:52.enough to send her to the Olympics. But the consolation will be that

:42:52. > :42:56.Arzhakova takes the race. But Sharp waited and waited. I'm not sure she

:42:56. > :43:02.could keep up to be fair. But look at the smile on her face. A silver

:43:02. > :43:09.medal for Linsey Sharp. Her coach will be delighted. And the time

:43:09. > :43:15.will be a personal best for Linsey. But it will not be quick enough to

:43:15. > :43:22.guarantee selection. What a week she's had. Yes superb, she has done

:43:22. > :43:29.nothing wrong so far. And it will join the silver her dad won way

:43:29. > :43:36.back in the 200 metres. Arzhakova tyking it right and looking

:43:36. > :43:43.stronger as the race went on. Watch Linsey Sharp come from way back.

:43:43. > :43:47.Gaining with every stride and a little trip there. And that meant

:43:47. > :43:53.that Linsey Sharp could come through. The Belarusian was out on

:43:53. > :44:03.her legs. A great run from the champion. Arzhakova the new

:44:03. > :44:08.champion and a silver for Great Britain. The gold goes to Russia,

:44:08. > :44:17.Arzhakova, a big personal best and a brilliant silver for Linsey Sharp

:44:17. > :44:24.and Maracheva hanging on for the bronze. So close and yet so far.

:44:24. > :44:28.Jemma Simpson had a great go in seventh. A couple of week back I

:44:28. > :44:35.was putting pressure on myself and said to myself, it is not going to

:44:35. > :44:39.happen if I keep thinking like this. So forget about it andlike -- and

:44:39. > :44:43.look forward to this. I came into this thinking I want to make the

:44:43. > :44:49.final, which I did. I felt good yesterday and everyone was saying

:44:49. > :44:55.you have a chance. But I don't know if I believed it until the last 80

:44:55. > :45:02.if I believed it until the last 80 metres! That was off tape that race.

:45:02. > :45:07.With 150 to go, I'm thinking that can't be right. Linsey's a very

:45:07. > :45:12.good finisher and she has a tend si to finish strongly. That is the

:45:12. > :45:19.first time she has gone to a major championships. One thing she will

:45:19. > :45:23.learn, she has done well, is that in that sort of race and let's be

:45:23. > :45:28.fair, some of the events aren't as strong as they could be, but there

:45:28. > :45:36.was some good athletes there. She sat off it but she is sitting off

:45:36. > :45:40.it not by choice, but at the moment she strugglings -- struggles to go

:45:40. > :45:45.with the hard pace. With that pace attend she could do very well. The

:45:45. > :45:55.problem for her now is she is getting quick but not, has not been

:45:55. > :46:01.

:46:01. > :46:07.getting quick quickly enough to The selectors sit on Monday morning.

:46:07. > :46:12.Summarised the position. Because Lynsey Sharp won the trials, and

:46:13. > :46:20.Jemma Simpson. Neither of them had the standard for this year.

:46:20. > :46:29.Genitals from last year, so Jemma Simpson can be selected, Emma

:46:29. > :46:36.Jackson. Emma has run at this year. Sir so has Marilyn. And we have

:46:36. > :46:46.Jenny, he has Scots pedigree at big championships. We have for people

:46:46. > :46:47.

:46:47. > :46:51.who could be selected. We have one athletes who has form, but is

:46:51. > :47:00.running to a lesser standard. To pick Lynsey Sharp, they would have

:47:00. > :47:10.to ignore or for athletes to have met the standard. Denise, you will

:47:10. > :47:10.

:47:10. > :47:16.be sitting in that selection meeting. It is really tough.

:47:16. > :47:23.Marilyn, out of those for girls is the fastest runner this year.

:47:23. > :47:29.will be hards to selector after these trials? Yeah so, because we

:47:29. > :47:39.have seen Marilyn mess up and not run tactically well in

:47:39. > :47:40.

:47:40. > :47:50.championships. She is still the fastest girl. Can Jenny run quickly

:47:50. > :47:53.

:47:53. > :47:57.at the moment? So do you pick someone who will maybe just run

:47:57. > :48:07.well in the heats because she does not have the running in her legs?

:48:07. > :48:08.

:48:08. > :48:18.Jenny was holds at the time trial... apparently the time trial went well,

:48:18. > :48:22.

:48:22. > :48:27.but there is no evidence of it. Marilyn runs a crazy race. Gemma is

:48:27. > :48:33.not fit ago. None of them are really pushing the case forward

:48:33. > :48:42.released wrongly. That is the issue here. There are good reasons for

:48:42. > :48:51.all of them not to be picked, that is the point! That is harsh! It is

:48:51. > :48:56.a real issue. If you read the selection policy, there is a

:48:56. > :49:00.Diamond League next week as well. The youth of July is technically

:49:00. > :49:05.the last time make it picks somebody. They could name three

:49:05. > :49:13.people and a reserve. That could give them another week to sort it

:49:13. > :49:22.out. We will get and 90 in a couple of days' time. Let's might catch up

:49:22. > :49:32.with a hundred metres. The woman's hundred metres. This is what

:49:32. > :50:08.

:50:08. > :50:13.well. The Norwegian is there as well. 11.27 into a slight headwind.

:50:13. > :50:23.It is not particularly quick, but after losing a couple of metres to

:50:23. > :50:25.

:50:25. > :50:31.quite a few of the athletes, she kept it together, capture composure

:50:31. > :50:39.and eventually came through. won the European junior title nine

:50:39. > :50:46.years ago, had a brilliant a London season in 2004. She has had some

:50:46. > :50:56.injury problems, including a broken leg. The first Bulgarian ever to

:50:56. > :51:03.

:51:03. > :51:13.win the goals in 100 metres final. It was very, very tight on the line.

:51:13. > :51:22.

:51:22. > :51:30.She knew when she crossed the line, that the gold was first. You have

:51:30. > :51:35.got to hand a tour, it was not the best of starts. I always think it

:51:35. > :51:41.is difficult if you're sandwiched between two really good 60-metre

:51:41. > :51:45.runners because they get out of the blocks are well. She just had

:51:45. > :51:53.enough of it the last 20 metres to force yourself to the front, and I

:51:53. > :51:59.think that was as much to do with determination as anything else.

:51:59. > :52:09.There was some guts shown here as well. The title goes to Bulgaria

:52:09. > :52:26.

:52:26. > :52:31.third have been given the same time. So, the first ever female gold

:52:31. > :52:41.medal for Bulgaria in this event. We are going to move on to the 200

:52:41. > :52:41.

:52:41. > :54:47.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:54:47. > :54:57.Laina for in this women's European Mariya Ryemyen. So, she gets it.

:54:57. > :55:00.

:55:00. > :55:10.almost could have been I Ukrainian 1, 2, 3. The defending champion

:55:10. > :55:48.

:55:48. > :55:53.lost it completely, almost lost her One of the talking point in

:55:53. > :55:59.Helsinki has been that tightness of the events. They have relayed this

:55:59. > :56:02.track to make sure there is an football pitch in the middle and

:56:02. > :56:08.there have been lots of disqualifications, happened there?

:56:08. > :56:13.There have been lots. The shape of its is very unusual. It is very

:56:13. > :56:18.tight in the beginning, then straightened up, then gets tight

:56:18. > :56:25.again. Athletes are far more prepared to have a smooth pence.

:56:25. > :56:30.This is why we're having lots of people clipping the lines. It came

:56:30. > :56:35.into play with devastating effect for the British women's relay team.

:56:35. > :56:39.It was really unfortunate for them. They were going into this

:56:39. > :56:44.championships ranked 15th in the world and it was very important for

:56:44. > :56:54.them to get through this qualification rounds and obviously

:56:54. > :57:04.

:57:04. > :57:11.British record holder. She is running now. Running nicely down

:57:11. > :57:17.the home straight. Handing over to hear Lee Jones. You see she

:57:17. > :57:24.slightly stumbled there. Really found it awkward. Now she is just

:57:24. > :57:29.thinking got I hope nobody saw me clicked that line. It looks like

:57:29. > :57:39.Britain are through comfortably. No problems whatsoever, in second

:57:39. > :57:39.

:57:39. > :57:46.place with a smile. It look like they were going to get that vital

:57:46. > :57:53.top 16 spot. You can see her just catching it there. What a shame.

:57:53. > :57:58.almost looked as if she tried to go too tight. She caught the line. I

:57:58. > :58:03.had been in situations when you have typed bends engine normally

:58:03. > :58:07.make the adjustment early. Running late three, it is very difficult.

:58:07. > :58:13.It is unfortunate because it was so vital for our girls to make it

:58:13. > :58:18.through. They did not run badly. They are not three. A bit of

:58:18. > :58:23.history what the women's relay team. Two years ago at their head coach

:58:23. > :58:29.was overheard after their disqualification calling it a

:58:29. > :58:34.disgrace, that performance. lambasted the girls, he really did.

:58:34. > :58:40.This is what happens when you leave qualification so late in the day.

:58:40. > :58:45.To be fair, the girls have not been in the best shape. They have all

:58:45. > :58:53.struggled with injuries. The consistency has eluded them in the

:58:53. > :58:57.less -- in the last couple of years. They had their funding withdrawn.

:58:57. > :59:02.That is the motivation for her them to get them up or they want to be.

:59:02. > :59:12.It is terrible for Team GB because you always want to have

:59:12. > :59:45.

:59:45. > :59:52.representation, at least. We can three turns. That is way out there!

:59:52. > :00:02.Sophie Hitchen making no impression in this final. She has thrown about

:00:02. > :00:03.

:00:03. > :00:13.65 metres in the first round. Now, Anita Wlodarczyk. For more world

:00:13. > :00:22.

:00:22. > :00:27.round. That could be better. Yes it is. She has to be part of the top

:00:27. > :00:37.eight. She shakes her head. Not looking too happy. Plenty of

:00:37. > :00:39.

:00:39. > :00:44.British support out there. Good turns. And coming down midway

:00:44. > :00:54.between 65 and 70 metres. May improve her situation. She is in

:00:54. > :01:03.

:01:03. > :01:10.ninth. But it is an improve. 67.17. Mohr one of men hoping to give them

:01:10. > :01:20.something to think about. I think they will expecting a lot in that

:01:20. > :01:30.event. Mohr has made a good start. Better conditions for the men. So

:01:30. > :01:41.

:01:41. > :01:47.he is clear first time. A bit of room Fourth round for Wlodarczyk.

:01:47. > :01:57.She just managed to maintain her balance and that is out to wards 75

:01:57. > :02:03.metres. The coach and the athlete looking fairly unemotional about

:02:03. > :02:13.that throw. A toe turn on the first turn and then it is heel-toe all

:02:13. > :02:15.

:02:15. > :02:24.the way, before she launches that hammer. So Wlodarczyk still leads.

:02:24. > :02:28.But how far is it? Oh it is an improvement. 74.29. Well Sophie

:02:28. > :02:34.Hitchon not making it. But she has had a strong season. British record

:02:34. > :02:40.had a strong season. British record three times. Ray Yes it is good to

:02:40. > :02:45.see our throws, specially the hammer, she is being a pioneer in

:02:45. > :02:50.that eventn't just unfortunate that she didn't make it by one place.

:02:50. > :02:54.Very disappointing. But still going. One athlete who was not selected

:02:55. > :03:01.last week was Chris Tomlinson in the long jump. He came here and

:03:01. > :03:05.didn't make the final. How would you assess where he is? As we saw

:03:05. > :03:10.at the start he won silver in Barcelona. Yes unbelievable. Poor

:03:10. > :03:15.Chris. You always think what are you doing. He needs a good shake-up.

:03:15. > :03:21.She has great competition at home. It is toing and froing with that

:03:21. > :03:25.British record and he needs to concentrate and just deliver more

:03:25. > :03:30.consistency. We all know he is a very talented Athletic laet. And

:03:30. > :03:36.with all the problems that you have, all the niggles, it is a bit of a

:03:36. > :03:40.problem. What is frustrating, if he can come back and jump 7.93 and not

:03:40. > :03:49.be able to do that at the Championships. That is what we look

:03:49. > :03:52.forward to, people making a difference. One of the biggest

:03:52. > :03:58.heartbreaks was Lorraine, she was one centimetre short. She tried to

:03:58. > :04:03.do it this week. And she won't be going. By one centimetre. It is,

:04:03. > :04:06.how cruel these selections are. But you know, she has got a lot of

:04:06. > :04:10.experience coming into these Championships and will get a lot

:04:10. > :04:16.from being here. Hopefully she will grow from here. Sh she has never

:04:16. > :04:22.been in this situation before. back to the action. The women's

:04:22. > :04:29.back to the action. The women's four by 100 metres relay. The

:04:29. > :04:39.stadium is bathed in sunshine. There is some wind in the arena.

:04:39. > :04:54.

:04:54. > :05:04.disappointing to all s support who have come here. Switzerland on the

:05:04. > :05:04.

:05:05. > :05:11.inside. They set a new national record in qualifying yesterday.

:05:11. > :05:21.Belarus led off by the Russian indoor champion. She should be used

:05:21. > :05:22.

:05:22. > :05:32.to tight bends. France are former champions. And bringing it home

:05:32. > :05:33.

:05:33. > :05:43.will be the bronze medallist in the individual 100 metres. The big

:05:43. > :05:45.

:05:45. > :05:55.teams, first of all Russia. She has tasted lirp success. Run the first

:05:55. > :05:55.

:05:55. > :06:05.leg in Beijing. Possibly the favourites, they are the defending

:06:05. > :06:08.

:06:08. > :06:15.champions it is Ukraine. And they have Ryemyen the 200 metre champion.

:06:15. > :06:21.The Germans have the former European champion. Only finished

:06:21. > :06:31.sixth this time. The Netherlands got into the final because of

:06:31. > :06:34.

:06:34. > :06:38.Britain's disqualification. Shippers did well in the 200 metres.

:06:38. > :06:47.Finally right on the outside, Poland. They have made it through

:06:47. > :06:53.to the Olympics, no matter what happens here. Quite a useful

:06:53. > :06:59.quartet. So difficult to see if there is an out and out favourite.

:06:59. > :07:04.In consideration of Ukrainian come position of the team with Povh,

:07:04. > :07:14.Ryemyen and the others, very very good individual runners. How can

:07:14. > :07:16.

:07:16. > :07:26.they change the baton's. The French there. They're pretty useful and

:07:26. > :07:47.

:07:47. > :07:51.let's not forget Russia. The 4 by gaining ground the craw Ukraines

:07:52. > :08:00.have gone off well. What about the first change over? All OK. The

:08:00. > :08:07.French have made a real hash of it. And the Ukraine too. Germany trying

:08:07. > :08:14.to chase down the Netherlands. France are recovering here. With

:08:15. > :08:20.the Russians, but it is Germany who change over first. And Germany

:08:20. > :08:25.bring it home. The Ukraine will be disgusted. Not to have defended

:08:25. > :08:33.their title. But jarmy get the gold, the Netherlands are silver. Poland

:08:33. > :08:37.could be in with a shout as well. 42.51. Well what would have

:08:37. > :08:43.happened had the Ukraine got the baton to their final runner? We

:08:43. > :08:53.shall never know. But the Netherlands have having -- are

:08:53. > :08:55.

:08:55. > :09:00.having a good games here. There is Povh the lead off runner. But

:09:00. > :09:06.Germany are the European champions, with the fastest time in Europe in

:09:06. > :09:10.2012 as well. Well you have to hand to it Germany they often get it

:09:10. > :09:16.right in the relays. The Dutch, well they only got through because

:09:16. > :09:20.of the disqualification of the British, but they had two good

:09:20. > :09:26.youngsters to bring in. They couldn't run them yesterday,

:09:26. > :09:31.because they were in the 200 metres. Ryemyen never even got to compete,

:09:31. > :09:37.the winner of 200 metres. It is all about getting the baton round, we

:09:37. > :09:42.have said that goodness knows how many times. You can't run easy, you

:09:42. > :09:46.have to stretch and the Germans were always going to be close to

:09:46. > :09:49.the Ukraine. But the Ukraine were the favourite and Povh is such a

:09:49. > :09:53.good starter. Watch this. She is struggling on the bend to keep her

:09:53. > :09:59.balance. But there was nothing wrong. They just didn't take the

:09:59. > :10:04.baton. She had it in her hand and then dropped it. There was nothing

:10:04. > :10:08.seriously wrong the the change. She just dropped it. Then it was all

:10:09. > :10:13.about the German team and on the top bend at this point until that

:10:13. > :10:20.third leg, Holland were just about in the lead. But there was a great

:10:20. > :10:24.third leg from Germany and handed over to the experienced European

:10:24. > :10:29.champion from two years ago and their youngster, the Dutch

:10:29. > :10:39.youngster, Samuel, finished very well indeed. So a dramatic women's

:10:39. > :10:43.

:10:43. > :10:48.race. But jarmy are the champions. -- Germany are the champions. It

:10:48. > :10:51.was very clear, first, second and third. But the Ukraine must be

:10:51. > :10:58.thinking what if. They have had a good Championship and that is the

:10:58. > :11:03.first thing that has gone wrong for them really. So the Germans bathed

:11:03. > :11:13.in sunshine as the champions. Poland repeat their bronze medal

:11:13. > :11:16.

:11:16. > :11:23.success of two years ago. And the Dutch quartet must be absolutely

:11:23. > :11:27.beside themselves with pleasure. Just have another look at this.

:11:27. > :11:32.Povh is going so fast around the bend, but corrects herself and the

:11:32. > :11:42.next runner should have taken it away. She had it and then just

:11:42. > :11:43.

:11:43. > :11:51.dropped it. This was a good leg around the top bend. Ship% ran well

:11:51. > :11:59.for hell land and it was a safe change and the gold was theirs. The

:11:59. > :12:08.French ed a no Christine Arron, who was dropped. But that made no

:12:08. > :12:18.difference. So there is the top three. Germany, the Netherlands and

:12:18. > :12:20.

:12:20. > :12:24.Poland. Well we assumed that the action was going to come from the

:12:24. > :12:34.lanes further inside. It is not often you get the first three past

:12:34. > :12:35.

:12:35. > :12:41.the line in lanes 6, 7 and 8. Well the women's hammer final continuing.

:12:41. > :12:49.The big question is can anybody catch the Polish athlete who is in

:12:49. > :12:55.pole position. That is Anita Wlodarczyk. This is Klaas of

:12:55. > :13:00.Germany. Those followers of hammer throwing will see a resemblance to

:13:00. > :13:07.the German world record holder, who did not make the final. That is not

:13:07. > :13:17.going to be good enough to bring Klaas a medal. Currently in fourth.

:13:17. > :13:18.

:13:18. > :13:28.Trying her best there. But she needed 70 metres. She has already

:13:28. > :13:32.

:13:32. > :13:41.thrown 70.44. The bronze medal position held by Bulgakova. Klaas

:13:41. > :13:51.69.75. She will finish in fourth. Sophie Hitchon finished in 11th

:13:51. > :13:52.

:13:52. > :13:57.with 67.17. So Anna Bulgakova. Wlodarczyk's best was 74.29. The

:13:57. > :14:07.Russian has to go longer than that, otherwise the Polish athlete is the

:14:07. > :14:08.

:14:08. > :14:13.champion. That is confirmed. So we have a new champion, but still one

:14:13. > :14:22.more throw to go. Wlodarczyk it is. She lost her World Championship

:14:22. > :14:32.status, she lost her world record. But she is going to gain a European

:14:32. > :14:42.gold medal. 71.47 for Bulgaria Coe Valgaeren is there anything that

:14:42. > :14:46.

:14:46. > :14:51.Hrasnova can do? She keeps it so long. Didn't have the finishing

:14:51. > :15:01.speed there. That is coming down below the 70 metre mark. She

:15:01. > :15:06.

:15:06. > :15:11.actually hit the cage. But she is good idea as to which athletes are

:15:11. > :15:21.emerging as a Olympic favourites. There is certainly a very good

:15:21. > :15:22.

:15:22. > :15:27.Chinese athlete, obviously not here. She is a 75 plus thrower. I am sure

:15:27. > :15:32.that Betty Heidler will try to make sure she does much better in London.

:15:32. > :15:38.He goes to champion with the last throw of the competition. She hit

:15:38. > :15:42.the cage, overcook it but it doesn't matter, because Anita

:15:42. > :15:51.Wlodarczyk is the European Women's hammer champion. Anne-Sophie

:15:51. > :15:54.Hitchen, she finishes in 11th place. -- and Sophie Hitchon. I think it

:15:55. > :16:04.is going to take much bigger throws to win the Olympic title in just

:16:05. > :16:09.

:16:09. > :16:13.over a month's time. I think when Anita Wlodarczyk won her world

:16:13. > :16:17.title in Berlin, where she broke the world record, she actually

:16:17. > :16:22.started to do Ohla pub on and tripped over a camera bag or

:16:22. > :16:30.something like that and sprained her ankle -- to do a lap of honour.

:16:30. > :16:40.Maybe she will do one this time. There you go, the European champion.

:16:40. > :17:06.

:17:06. > :17:11.today than they have been for most of the week. We have seen pictures

:17:11. > :17:16.of some of the rain that has dogged the championships, and a much

:17:16. > :17:20.better crowd, it is holiday time in Helsinki, so a better crowd as they

:17:20. > :17:30.welcome the long jumpers coming out for their final. That will be on

:17:30. > :17:45.

:17:45. > :17:55.a very good clearance from him, so he will join multi- more with a

:17:55. > :17:56.

:17:56. > :18:06.first-time clearance. -- Malte Mohr. That is a good clearance, plenty of

:18:06. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:20.competition favourite, he is unbeaten in 2012, but this time he

:18:20. > :18:26.is clear. Just a little shake of the header, and I bet that is a

:18:26. > :18:30.huge relief. It might just come back to affect the competition

:18:30. > :18:36.later. Look how clear hears, he just grazed it a little bit on the

:18:36. > :18:40.way down. A very close to a second failure. A little fortunate, there,

:18:40. > :18:50.the Frenchman. He is to make a couple of slight adjustments. He

:18:50. > :19:14.

:19:14. > :19:24.has been in such good form this through produce it. -- Two Bridges

:19:24. > :19:31.

:19:31. > :19:39.said. -- what a time to produce it. A season's best. Enjoying the much

:19:39. > :19:44.better conditions here. Of course, Germany in men and women's pole-

:19:44. > :19:54.vaulting are so strong. We have already saved Malte Mohr. Bjorn

:19:54. > :20:05.

:20:05. > :20:11.controlled. He is a big man, Bjorn Otto, and he made that look very

:20:11. > :20:15.difficult -- comfortable indeed. It is warming up. I was just about to

:20:15. > :20:20.say, it really is hotting up. The women's final was held in terrible

:20:20. > :20:30.conditions. Much better for the men and we have got some of the best

:20:30. > :20:51.

:20:51. > :20:56.first attempt. Goodness me. They are taking a few risks here.

:20:56. > :21:06.Perhaps reflected in the crowd by the coach, thinking, this strategy

:21:06. > :21:09.

:21:09. > :21:16.may well pay off. That is a clear. To first-time clearances, and the

:21:16. > :21:26.Germans are in a very good position now. Yes! That puts him in the lead

:21:26. > :21:38.

:21:38. > :21:42.the end with a fair bit of daylight, but how well did the Dutch team

:21:42. > :21:52.run? A bonus after they got through when the British team were

:21:52. > :21:52.

:21:52. > :21:56.disqualified. The fastest time in Europe this year. A wonderful

:21:56. > :22:05.silver medal for the Netherlands. And Poland repeating their bronze

:22:05. > :22:10.We will keep across the pole- vaulting and also the long jump

:22:10. > :22:13.this starting soon, we JJ Jegede be looking for that Olympic standard

:22:13. > :22:17.qualifying of eight metres. We will now have a look back at some action

:22:17. > :22:27.that took past and the last couple of days and some of those athletes

:22:27. > :22:34.

:22:34. > :22:40.who were already crowned the competitor early on in the women's

:22:40. > :22:45.long jump. It was one of her best chance ever. Despite challenges

:22:45. > :22:48.throughout the condition, she held on to win her first major title.

:22:48. > :22:58.The European long jump champion and the gold medal.

:22:58. > :23:01.

:23:01. > :23:04.In the men's javelin, but this lab Vesely was fortunate to get through

:23:04. > :23:13.qualification but he has been in great form all year and finally, he

:23:13. > :23:23.produced it, in the second round with a throw of 83.72 metres.

:23:23. > :23:31.Tomlinson, incidentally, only took free throws. -- 3. In the winning

:23:31. > :23:36.shot put, or the event favourite Nadine Kleinert -- in the winning

:23:36. > :23:44.shot put, the event favourite Nadine Kleinert, contesting her 5th

:23:44. > :23:50.European title, she won well with the best throw of 19.18 metres.

:23:50. > :23:56.And there was more joy for Germany in the men's shot, David Storl

:23:57. > :24:01.totally dominant. This was the winning throw in the third round,

:24:01. > :24:10.improving to 21.58. He actually had a 22-metre throw which was judged

:24:10. > :24:18.as they fell. -- as a foul. In the women's triple jump, Ballasalla do

:24:18. > :24:24.have produced one of the best performances of the championships -

:24:24. > :24:32.- Saladuha. This was the largest jump in the world this year. She is

:24:32. > :24:42.their very definitely the favoured for the Olympic title. -- the

:24:42. > :24:43.

:24:43. > :24:53.favourite. The two Frenchmen lead with the Hama laps to go. -- two

:24:53. > :24:55.

:24:55. > :25:05.way from home but this is the first time we have seen anyone put in a

:25:05. > :25:06.

:25:06. > :25:16.concerted effort. It is a French one, too, as they run to the 7

:25:16. > :25:18.

:25:18. > :25:28.the title he won in 2010. Garcia is certainly a danger. Just gathering

:25:28. > :25:35.

:25:35. > :25:44.momentum here and just over 400m to go. It has been a long, sustained

:25:44. > :25:50.effort and the others are beginning to fall off one by one. Four men

:25:50. > :25:56.are starting to pull clear, and look at Garcia, full of running.

:25:56. > :26:06.The favourite has been out kicked on more than one occasion. That is

:26:06. > :26:07.

:26:07. > :26:11.an early kick for home. The tall figure from France and the

:26:11. > :26:17.diminutive figure from Spain, Garcia having to give way around

:26:17. > :26:22.the top bend, but this is not over yet. The water jump, clear, with a

:26:22. > :26:29.metre between them. This is between France and Spain, and that that

:26:29. > :26:39.Garcia's. Has he got the pace from the final barrier? Garcia goes. We

:26:39. > :26:47.

:26:47. > :26:57.have seen that in Championships in French but retains his title, he is

:26:57. > :27:07.the European champion again. -- the Frenchman. Garcia just clipping it

:27:07. > :27:35.

:27:35. > :27:45.with his leading leg. He did well competition. And he is clear. His

:27:45. > :27:45.

:27:45. > :27:52.best is only 5.75. And he is causing a little bit of a stir here.

:27:52. > :28:02.Just arching over, just pressures the bar, and it stays in place. And

:28:02. > :28:05.

:28:05. > :28:12.he goes clear. A season's best for him. Because of that earlier

:28:12. > :28:20.failure at 5.60, taking a bit of a gamble here. 5.77, first attempt,

:28:20. > :28:27.and he gets it! That is more like it from the Frenchman. He really

:28:27. > :28:34.has sprung to life. Very high indeed. Maintained good form over

:28:34. > :28:38.the bar, and he really has taken a stranglehold on this event now. The

:28:38. > :28:48.others have got to strike back soon, otherwise he may well have the gold

:28:48. > :29:02.

:29:02. > :29:12.And he goes clear as well! We are rimfire great competition here.

:29:12. > :29:13.

:29:13. > :29:23.Raphel Halstead their matching -- matching Lavillenie. And he will

:29:23. > :29:23.

:29:23. > :29:33.lead the competition, because of Lavillenie's failure at 5.60. He

:29:33. > :29:39.

:29:39. > :29:44.a decent pace is being set. The final is one which we have all been

:29:44. > :29:48.looking forward to seeing. Jo Pavey, Charlotte Purdue, competing for

:29:48. > :29:56.Great Britain, and Gemma Steel, who was a little further toward the

:29:56. > :30:02.back. But Jo Pavey really just coming into some good form when she

:30:02. > :30:12.wanted to. She was attempting to make it into the marathon team and

:30:12. > :30:21.

:30:21. > :30:27.once that option had gone, she out to be a good men's pole vault

:30:27. > :30:35.final. This guy was an Olympic finalist, where he finished tenth.

:30:35. > :30:40.He tugs and tries to drive off the top of the pole. Back to the 10,000

:30:40. > :30:49.metres. 1,600 metres gone and the familiar name of the Italian

:30:49. > :30:55.Ejjafini leads the field. Jo Pavey has moved up to about the top four

:30:55. > :31:05.places. Just a couple of places behind her is Charlotte Purdue. At

:31:05. > :31:08.

:31:08. > :31:16.the back of the field is Gemma Steel. Now back to the pole vault,

:31:16. > :31:26.Steve. This is Bjorn Otto. He has not done anything wrong, but he is

:31:26. > :31:31.

:31:31. > :31:36.in fourth. He needs to draw clear here. Lavillenie is going so well.

:31:36. > :31:41.Here he goes. He is running through, he won't have time to have another

:31:41. > :31:47.go. The women's 10,000 metres, you mentioned a couple of names, it is

:31:47. > :31:50.a shame it has slowed down, somebody like Charlotte Purdue

:31:51. > :31:58.could think there was still a chance of Olympic qualification.

:31:58. > :32:08.But that second Klimer the, 3.18. But you can see some names you

:32:08. > :32:08.

:32:08. > :32:16.mentioned, Dee Yas and the women who won the women's cross country

:32:16. > :32:22.Championships, Fionnuala Britton. She has done well in the 10,000

:32:22. > :32:32.metres and will represent Ireland at the games. Ejjafini ran a

:32:32. > :32:37.

:32:37. > :32:42.personal best in the 5,000. One or two other names. Dull Shay -- Dulce

:32:42. > :32:49.Felix and Sabrina Mockenhaupt who Jo Pavey will know, they have a

:32:49. > :32:57.race in Bergen and Mockenhaupt outkicked Jo Pavey in the latter

:32:57. > :33:07.stages. But this is 10,000 and not 5,000 and Jo has been in good shape.

:33:07. > :33:07.

:33:07. > :33:12.As good as Jo has been, she never gives less than 100% and she has

:33:12. > :33:20.not won a major title. One of the reasons she is here is not just to

:33:20. > :33:23.kiep thinging moves, but it is an - - to keep things moving, but it is

:33:23. > :33:30.a good opportunity. It is a competitive field and she will have

:33:30. > :33:40.to be at her best. Yes Britton leads, Ejjafini in second. Back to

:33:40. > :33:50.the pole vault. Mohr. And he goes clear as well. So Germany with two

:33:50. > :33:54.

:33:54. > :33:59.men clear at this height. He joins Holzdeppe. He won't like the idea

:33:59. > :34:09.of Holzdeppe doing better than him here. Just a little congratulations

:34:09. > :34:10.

:34:10. > :34:20.from his young country man. change in the leads except that die

:34:20. > :34:25.

:34:25. > :34:30.Yas and Felix have -- Dee Yas and Felix have swapped over. There is a

:34:30. > :34:38.breakaway group now. Jo Pavey is part of the group. Just forging

:34:38. > :34:44.ahead of everyone else now. She is back in about 10th position on the

:34:44. > :34:49.curve. Gemma Steel has joined them and all three Britons are there.

:34:49. > :34:55.Just to clarify the situation, Jo Pavey already has the A standard.

:34:55. > :35:04.There is no trial for GB over 10,000 metres. It was just about

:35:04. > :35:09.the qualification period. It goes up until this weekend. So a quicker

:35:09. > :35:18.kilometre from Britton, just picking the pace up. So there is

:35:18. > :35:21.still an opportunity for Charlotte Purdue. 31.45 the qualifying time.

:35:21. > :35:28.Filippidis earlier on must have thought he may have got a medal.

:35:28. > :35:34.Burr he needs this. He hasn't got it. And that means the Greek is out

:35:34. > :35:40.of competition. As we head back to Britton for Ireland leading this

:35:40. > :35:50.10,000 metres women's final. Charlotte Purdue, this is her third,

:35:50. > :35:51.

:35:51. > :36:01.well there is one walking off. This is her third 10,000 metres of the

:36:01. > :36:01.

:36:01. > :36:08.season. The first one she ran 33 and ran in the State and ran 32.03.

:36:08. > :36:15.I think when she ran 32.03, her thinking was that is not too far

:36:15. > :36:24.away. Mockenhaupt has been down the back straight for a drink.

:36:24. > :36:32.Germans clear at 5.77 can Otto make ate trio? Yes he can! Well, with

:36:32. > :36:42.every vault this competition is getting keen indeed. So now clear

:36:42. > :36:45.

:36:45. > :36:51.at 5.77 we have hol Depp, Lavillenie, Mohr and now Otto. Wow!

:36:51. > :36:59.There we go. He will have to go higher if he has any chance to get

:36:59. > :37:04.a medal. Particular think gold. -- particularly the gold. Gemma Steel

:37:04. > :37:09.at the back of the group. She will have ambitions as well. She will

:37:09. > :37:18.have to have a massive improvement to get near an Olympic qualifying.

:37:18. > :37:25.But she was third in the German cross country. Mockenhaupt again

:37:25. > :37:31.taking on water. And destroying the table in the process. And she

:37:31. > :37:36.didn't even manage to get hold of a boolt of -- bottle of water.

:37:36. > :37:41.Normally, you don't want to take the top off bottles, it is more

:37:41. > :37:47.difficult to drink from. Cups cowl have been, they're not ideal either,

:37:47. > :37:55.but better than bottles. It is not a marathon. Just a grab a quick sip.

:37:55. > :38:00.Surprised they are doing it. It is not exactly 30 degrees is it?

:38:00. > :38:05.Pavey at the back of that pack, more about that in a minute. Now

:38:05. > :38:11.Lavillenie knows he has got to go higher than 5.77 to win gold. And

:38:12. > :38:16.he will not do it with that vault. That compounds the problem he has.

:38:16. > :38:25.He may think of passing on either the next two attempts, or maybe

:38:25. > :38:31.have another go. Because of an early failure at 5.60, which he

:38:31. > :38:38.must be kicking himself about now, he will have to go again and get

:38:38. > :38:43.first time clearances. Back to the 10,000. Britton and Ejjafini. All

:38:43. > :38:48.three Britons there too. Just seeing a glimpse of Jo Pavey. She

:38:48. > :38:54.is just chugging along nicely. Gemma Steel at the back of the

:38:54. > :38:59.group and Charlotte Purdue is there as well. Overtaking one of the

:38:59. > :39:04.Ukrainians. Charlotte Purdue working hard in this race. Just

:39:04. > :39:10.concerned about Jo. She has been, I thought she was happy to run at the

:39:10. > :39:18.back. Maybe it wasn't happy. Maybe that is, she is struggling.

:39:18. > :39:23.Holzdeppe at 5.82. I'm assuming, I don't know for a fact, because

:39:23. > :39:27.we're sat here and they're out there, but most of the competitors

:39:27. > :39:33.could have changed to a more stiff pole for these greater heights.

:39:33. > :39:41.That is why we're getting a couple of failures. But no change and

:39:41. > :39:47.Britton content to lead this 10,000 metre final. Jo has got herself

:39:47. > :39:52.closer. I was getting concerned that she was letting gaps appear.

:39:52. > :39:56.If it was conscious, fair enough, but if it was because she is

:39:56. > :40:06.struggling, she shouldn't be struggling at this stage. She has

:40:06. > :40:07.

:40:07. > :40:17.been in good shape. Well the men's long jump final about to start. We

:40:17. > :40:21.

:40:21. > :40:29.have some more field event finals to start. JJ Jegede of Britain

:40:29. > :40:36.needs 8.20 to be considered for the Olympics. Chris Tomlinson did not

:40:36. > :40:46.qualify for this final. As has become tradition we're having a

:40:46. > :40:47.

:40:47. > :40:55.look at all of the contestants. Chuva there. And the man who

:40:55. > :41:05.proproduced the biggest jumping performance, Bayer. JJ Jegede, now

:41:05. > :41:08.

:41:08. > :41:15.the British No 2. Can he go further? Luiz Meliz. Formerly of

:41:15. > :41:23.bue ka, now representing Spain. -- Cuba, now representing Spain. And

:41:23. > :41:33.the five times Swedish champion. Jensen of Denmark there. He has not

:41:33. > :41:42.

:41:42. > :41:52.achieved much outdoors. Eusebio cackers. -- Caceres. And Olly

:41:52. > :41:53.

:41:53. > :42:03.Kyneen. -- Ollikainen is very popular in these ports as is Tommi

:42:03. > :42:06.

:42:06. > :42:12.Evila. He won Finland's only medal in 2005. Gomis there of France. A

:42:12. > :42:17.very good exponent of the long jump indoors. And outdoors too. So back

:42:17. > :42:22.to the 10,000. Jo Pavey just tracking Charlotte Purdue as that

:42:22. > :42:30.leading group is starting to put a bit of a gap between themselves and

:42:30. > :42:35.Dias. But it is still Britain and Ireland -- Britton of Ireland who

:42:35. > :42:39.is leading. Felix is in second. Charlotte Purdue is looking

:42:39. > :42:43.comfortable, Steve and if Jo was going through a bad patch, we saw

:42:43. > :42:50.what she did at the British Olympic trials with her finishing spurt

:42:50. > :42:53.over the last lap of the 5,000 there. Just as I have said that,

:42:53. > :42:57.another gap begins to appear between herself and Charlotte

:42:57. > :43:06.Purdue, who moves around the outside and wants to stay in touch

:43:06. > :43:12.with the leaders. The pace through 5,000 almost exactly 16 minutes.

:43:12. > :43:16.Times two that is 32 minutes. Charlotte Purdue, there was that

:43:16. > :43:22.second kilometre and since then they have been rung around 76 laps.

:43:22. > :43:28.That is what they would have looked -- liked. There was a 77 there. But

:43:28. > :43:33.ten seconds adrift of that Olympic qualifying time. As we see the

:43:33. > :43:43.introdu,s for the women's -- introductions for the women's

:43:43. > :43:43.

:43:43. > :43:48.discuss that will be starting soon. There we have it. Perkovic is the

:43:48. > :43:53.defending European champion and she is only 22. She won two years ago

:43:53. > :43:58.and had just come out of her teenage years and it was a massive

:43:58. > :44:08.boost to her career. She became the youngest ever discuss champion on

:44:08. > :44:12.

:44:12. > :44:22.that occasion. The 10,000 metres still continuing. She is the six

:44:22. > :44:25.

:44:25. > :44:35.times Polish champion there. There is Sandra Perkovic. She won in the

:44:35. > :44:36.

:44:36. > :44:46.final round on that occasion. Chechlova there, a very powerful

:44:46. > :44:48.

:44:48. > :44:58.athlete. And tick is the Moldovan record holder. And Semenova, her

:44:58. > :45:08.best this year is 63.56. Jansen of the Netherland, seven times the

:45:08. > :45:13.

:45:13. > :45:23.Dutch champion. The French record holder there. The Italian under3

:45:23. > :45:34.

:45:34. > :45:44.champ con there. -- under23 Fischer, and a real new German at

:45:44. > :45:59.

:45:59. > :46:04.staff. -- staff. And and a roof. he needs to get theirs. No. He is

:46:04. > :46:10.in trouble. And unbeaten this year, the Frenchman, under some pressure

:46:10. > :46:20.here, and for him, even 5.82, the form he has been then, he should be

:46:20. > :46:22.

:46:22. > :46:32.able to clear this. -- been in. For Raphel Halstead but went clear with

:46:32. > :46:45.

:46:45. > :46:49.the business end and Fionnuala Britton has been at the front for a

:46:49. > :46:52.long time, but pushing things on. She wants to convert her cross-

:46:52. > :46:59.country victory to a track victory and Charlotte Purdue, who looked

:46:59. > :47:05.very comfortable all the way through,... First Sue Sebastian

:47:05. > :47:15.Bayer. He is in great shape. And that is a cracking start, if it is

:47:15. > :47:20.a valid jump. But it is not. Nearly a fireworks are the first round. --

:47:20. > :47:24.in the first round. Felix is beginning to claw her way from the

:47:24. > :47:31.pack of five athletes and Jo Pavey has spotted the danger and she is

:47:31. > :47:34.going after the Portuguese athlete. They know each other pretty well,

:47:34. > :47:38.Felix was second to Fionnuala Britton in those European cross-

:47:38. > :47:43.country championships and on paper, she is very well matched with Jo

:47:43. > :47:53.Pavey. Jo Pavey not wanting to panic, she knows this is a big spur

:47:53. > :47:54.

:47:54. > :48:04.to. They were running 76s but all of a sudden, this is a big push by

:48:04. > :48:05.

:48:05. > :48:09.Felix, and Jo Pavey's initial reaction has now slowed again. The

:48:09. > :48:14.and people beginning to latch onto the back of Jo Pavey, so at the

:48:14. > :48:20.moment, unless they can work together, these five, and looked to

:48:20. > :48:24.close that gap, Felix has stolen a march. It is sad to say, I was

:48:24. > :48:31.really hoping that the Jo Pavey, with a long way to go really, but

:48:31. > :48:36.that gap is getting bigger, I was really hoping that Jo Pavey could

:48:36. > :48:46.do something. They 73 second lap by the Portuguese athlete has broken

:48:46. > :48:49.

:48:49. > :48:53.things up at last in this 10,000m - stage. She is trying to go after

:48:53. > :49:01.Felix. Pat satisfied that Felix will come back to that chasing

:49:01. > :49:07.group. -- perhaps. Fionnuala Britton moving comfortably along

:49:07. > :49:12.the outside and Charlotte Purdue of finding herself behind that chasing

:49:12. > :49:20.pack, she doesn't want to end up in no man's land. And Jo Pavey is now

:49:20. > :49:27.back in third place, but the lead is a big one. Felix really is

:49:27. > :49:31.putting in a hard 800m and she has put the field wide open. And a bit

:49:31. > :49:36.surprised, I think Jo Pavey will say afterwards, that in the sort of

:49:36. > :49:43.form she has been staying, they are any running the 32 minutes pace and

:49:43. > :49:53.for Felix to get away so easily, OK, it has been two decent lads, but I

:49:53. > :49:55.

:49:55. > :50:01.thought she would cope with that. - he landed on it. Anyway, Felix

:50:01. > :50:08.looking strong at this point. Trying to take this group a little

:50:08. > :50:11.closer, but look at the gap. It is a good 35-of 40 metres. They are

:50:11. > :50:18.moving down the back straight and she is starting to look around a

:50:18. > :50:23.little bed. Those two laps were impressive -- and little bit. But I

:50:23. > :50:29.was surprised she could pull away so easily. Fionnuala Britton tried

:50:29. > :50:36.to hang on to any chance of a medal here. -- trying. They are lapping

:50:36. > :50:41.the Spaniard Marta Silvestre, who was 400m behind that chasing group.

:50:41. > :50:46.And even the chasing group is beginning to split apart. Poor old

:50:46. > :50:52.Charlotte Purdue is in 6th place. But this is a very impressive but

:50:52. > :50:58.of running by Felix. In the pole vault, and very important moment

:50:58. > :51:08.for the favourite -- a very important moment. Renaud Lavillenie.

:51:08. > :51:14.

:51:14. > :51:19.He has got to get this otherwise he Frenchman. Absolutely fantastic --

:51:19. > :51:25.a brilliant vault. A big sigh of relief, if he had failed that, he

:51:25. > :51:29.would have come thinking he had failed in his attempt to win at the

:51:29. > :51:33.European title that he deserves. He has been by far away the most

:51:33. > :51:43.consistent in Europe this year, if not in the rest of the world as

:51:43. > :51:46.

:51:46. > :51:56.well. Renaud Lavillenie goes ahead of Raphael hole stepper -- Rafael

:51:56. > :52:00.

:52:00. > :52:07.into this lead whatsoever. Dulce Felix of Portugal is looking strong

:52:07. > :52:13.as she comes around. She just has a little look around and she will be

:52:13. > :52:21.very happy with what she sees, clear daylight behind her. It is

:52:21. > :52:26.another 75 second lap. Krisztina Papp moving into some clear space

:52:26. > :52:32.for second. Charlotte Purdue, I think and do what she was trying to

:52:32. > :52:38.do... We will just go back to the pole vault. A earlier on, he may

:52:38. > :52:42.have thought he had won it, but he is out of the competition now. He

:52:43. > :52:47.certainly will be getting a medal, I think, but there are still four

:52:47. > :52:57.men of fighting. Michel Torneus to go in the long

:52:57. > :52:57.

:52:57. > :53:07.performer and he goes over eight metres. You can see how blustery it

:53:07. > :53:16.

:53:16. > :53:22.first person to have a legal aid metre jump. We saw Sebastian Bayer

:53:22. > :53:28.get it earlier -- eight-metre. A great jump, Sweden in the lead in

:53:28. > :53:35.the long jump. Three laps to go for Dulce Felix. Jo Pavey has moved

:53:35. > :53:42.into a medal position. Krisztina Papp other Ukraine in second and

:53:42. > :53:45.then behind Jo Pavey, or Fionnuala Britton and then in the distance,

:53:45. > :53:50.of Charlotte Purdue is in six, but no doubt about whether gold medal

:53:50. > :53:54.is heading at this point. The likes kids looking behind for a surge and

:53:54. > :53:58.there is nothing really materialising -- Felix keeps

:53:58. > :54:03.looking behind. They are running the pace they have run pretty much

:54:03. > :54:08.the whole race. Felix has just adopted by two or three seconds and

:54:08. > :54:18.now has a six or seven second lead. Krisztina Papp just wondering

:54:18. > :54:25.whether she is making any inroad into it -- bowler Skrypak just

:54:25. > :54:29.wondering whether she is making any inroads into it. Portugal so strong

:54:29. > :54:32.in recent times, with a great record going back a long time in

:54:32. > :54:42.women's distance running and they could well be getting a new

:54:42. > :54:49.European champion. A tremendous run by Dulce Felix. 800m to go for the

:54:49. > :54:58.leader. There is the chasing second and third places. Skrypak of the

:54:58. > :55:03.Ukraine and the Jo Pavey. Fionnuala Britton is a long way back and then

:55:03. > :55:10.Charlotte Purdue another 60 metres, after coming here hoping to gain

:55:10. > :55:15.the Olympic qualifying time of 31: 45. She has had a couple of a

:55:15. > :55:18.valley and attempts this season. Jo Pavey is only a couple of metres

:55:18. > :55:24.away from a silver medal position at the moment and if she is in any

:55:24. > :55:32.sort of shape, she could put in a sprint finish, just as she did in

:55:32. > :55:42.the final of the women's 5,000m at the UK trial. But Felix is a note

:55:42. > :55:47.

:55:47. > :55:51.enjoy the last lap. It is going to be a bit of a scrap for the silver

:55:52. > :55:59.and bronze medal. Jo Pavey is just Horringer, waiting to unleash the

:55:59. > :56:07.pace that she still does possess -- just hovering. She is around eight

:56:07. > :56:17.seconds behind Dulce Felix. Of course, Portugal won this title way

:56:17. > :56:20.

:56:20. > :56:25.back end 94 and went on to win the medal back in 2006 in the

:56:25. > :56:29.Commonwealth Games -- of course won a silver medal. Can she repeat that

:56:29. > :56:33.performance here? Dulce Felix is a very worthy champion but the silver

:56:33. > :56:40.medal is still up for grabs between a Ukrainian and Jo Pavey of Great

:56:40. > :56:43.Britain. Skrypak just trying to run a little wide around the bend, Jo

:56:43. > :56:48.Pavey taking the shortest route. She will wait until the home

:56:48. > :56:51.straight before tried to get past the Ukrainian. But here is the

:56:51. > :56:57.champion, she can look ahead, she doesn't have to worry about what is

:56:57. > :57:02.going on behind. Skrypak trying to kick on and Jo Pavey, as ever,

:57:02. > :57:07.gritting her teeth. And the arms and the knees pumping her down the

:57:07. > :57:17.home straight towards a silver medal. The gold coast of Portugal

:57:17. > :57:37.

:57:37. > :57:43.and then it is silver for Jo Pavey. here. A very strong last kilometre

:57:43. > :57:47.up from Phyllis, she didn't falter. Jo Pavey the list of very strong

:57:47. > :57:57.but it was those couple of laps when Dulce Felix went away.

:57:57. > :58:04.

:58:04. > :58:13.Charlotte Purdue crosses the line. So it is silver again, one South

:58:13. > :58:16.the Commonwealth Games and now the Portuguese athlete the Felix.

:58:16. > :58:23.And as Steve was saying, nobody could live with that extra

:58:23. > :58:33.injection of pace, not even Jo Pavey. But she is rewarded with a

:58:33. > :58:34.

:58:34. > :58:39.remarking that I thought Jo Pavey was looking good at the end of the

:58:39. > :58:42.race. She just didn't look comfortable in the early stages and

:58:42. > :58:46.wasn't really up with the group and it will be interesting to see what

:58:46. > :58:49.her comments are afterwards. She seemed really pleased with the

:58:49. > :58:55.silver medal, and so she should be, but it just looked as though

:58:55. > :59:05.earlier on in the race she was not looking too comfortable. She did

:59:05. > :59:06.

:59:06. > :59:15.fish well but Felix was very, very 5.82. And he won't be very happy

:59:15. > :59:21.with that. The last chance as well for Bjorn Otto, the big tour German.

:59:21. > :59:25.Can he joined Renaud Lavillenie? Yes, he can! So it is still game on

:59:25. > :59:35.in his pole vault final. While the gold medal go to France or will it

:59:35. > :59:37.

:59:37. > :59:42.be destined for Germany? Tremendous effort by Bjorn Otto. I wonder if

:59:42. > :59:50.the Germans came here thinking, we can dominate this competition? They

:59:50. > :59:53.almost did, but the remarkable vault by the Frenchman Renault --

:59:53. > :00:03.Renaud Lavillenie in means it is one Frenchman and one German who

:00:03. > :00:23.

:00:23. > :00:30.will contest the final and the bar but was almost a look of

:00:30. > :00:40.resignation on his face when he saw Bjorn Otto go for it -- go clear.

:00:40. > :00:42.

:00:43. > :00:52.That was a fantastic response by Renaud Lavillenie. Just watch this.

:00:53. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :01:05.He has been in such good form this year. So, he is now back in the

:01:05. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:28.lead. I think he wants to have it put up to five metres 92. That was

:01:28. > :01:33.a great performance by Jo Pavey. We saw the men's 10,000 metres earlier

:01:33. > :01:43.on. We will continue our run three events that have already taken

:01:43. > :01:44.

:01:44. > :02:25.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:02:25. > :02:29.women's 3000 metres steeplechase final. In at the Men's decathlon it

:02:29. > :02:39.was a goal for Germany, after a season's best in the javelin for

:02:39. > :02:45.

:02:45. > :02:53.him. 8558 points was his total. France took the title in the

:02:53. > :02:59.women's decathlon. She scored three personal bests, including a

:02:59. > :03:09.season's best in the 800 metres. We will catch up now with the men's

:03:09. > :03:20.

:03:20. > :03:29.Mark Lewis-Francis didn't make it through. You can see he was left in

:03:29. > :03:39.the blocks, but he was run out of it. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey did make

:03:39. > :04:04.

:04:04. > :04:10.blocks, and put some pressure on in the first 50 metres, he could be

:04:10. > :04:16.dangerous. He is a 200 metres specialist. This is the man who has

:04:16. > :04:24.been as surprised everybody. He is not pretty to watch, but he is

:04:24. > :04:33.powerful, strong and finishes quickly. The defending champion, a

:04:33. > :04:43.prodigious talent. He looked quite serene in qualification. He needs

:04:43. > :04:45.

:04:45. > :04:53.to get us of the blocks well. This man has been really good in the

:04:53. > :05:03.last couple of years, he is still very young. Talk about a precocious

:05:03. > :05:06.

:05:06. > :05:14.talent, and former youth world champion. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.

:05:15. > :05:22.The European title is always a high lights. Christophe Le nectar has

:05:22. > :05:32.come here to defend it and defended well, he hopes. Can any of these

:05:32. > :05:35.

:05:35. > :05:45.athletes stand in his way? Conditions are still in shadow in

:05:45. > :06:13.

:06:13. > :06:19.left there. What was his problem if he didn't even try to start?

:06:19. > :06:28.Everything seems to be good-natured, but why did he just sit in the

:06:28. > :06:38.blocks? He will get a warning, not a red card. He didn't even try to

:06:38. > :06:38.

:06:38. > :07:18.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:07:18. > :07:28.start! At the second time of asking, this time. I think it could well be

:07:28. > :07:31.

:07:31. > :07:40.him. Yes, it could well be. Yes, definitely, on the far side. It was

:07:40. > :07:50.an obvious false start by the Italian. He was disqualified.

:07:50. > :08:05.

:08:05. > :08:15.Christophe is hoping to get away its title again, just from his

:08:15. > :08:15.

:08:15. > :08:21.team-mate. Goodness me, it wasn't the best out of the blocks. It was

:08:21. > :08:28.a messy final in the end. The Latvian did not look like he was

:08:28. > :08:35.interested in taking part. Christophe joins the list of men

:08:35. > :08:39.who have defended his title, including Linford Christie. He is a

:08:39. > :08:49.two-time European champion. I don't think Christophe had realised he

:08:49. > :09:01.

:09:01. > :09:10.had won. It has just been confirmed. Kudos now! Harry bomb macro Harry

:09:10. > :09:20.Aikines-Aryeetey did not go as fast as he would have wanted. Christophe

:09:20. > :09:51.

:09:51. > :10:01.starting to eat up the ground. He Now, it is straight back out to the

:10:01. > :10:14.

:10:14. > :10:18.clear! Over to you! Bjorn Otto taking the gamble that Renaud

:10:18. > :10:25.Lavillenie wouldn't go any higher. Renaud Lavillenie was the first to

:10:25. > :10:35.go. What a response from this man, Renaud Lavillenie. He looked a

:10:35. > :10:35.

:10:35. > :10:39.little bit out of sorts earlier in the competition. 5.92! That is as

:10:39. > :10:49.high as anybody has gone this year in the world. He is unbeaten this

:10:49. > :10:53.

:10:53. > :10:58.year, the world No. 1. It just hangs on! Look at the response!

:10:58. > :11:08.This is turning into a great competition. So, Renaud Lavillenie

:11:08. > :11:22.

:11:22. > :11:30.have just seen six -- we have just seen the Sebastian Bayer complete

:11:30. > :11:37.his second jump, but it was a foul. JJ Jegede is going well here. He is

:11:37. > :11:42.looking good in the first round. My goodness! Spot on the border. I'm

:11:42. > :11:52.sure she is just thinking about what he needs for an Olympic

:11:52. > :11:58.

:11:58. > :12:03.qualification, which would be 8.20. So, Luis Felipe Meliz. What a great

:12:03. > :12:13.jump by JJ Jegede! The long jump is benefiting from a pretty strong

:12:13. > :12:17.

:12:17. > :12:27.breeze behind them. That is good as well! Michel Torneus has the lead

:12:27. > :12:33.

:12:33. > :12:43.at the moments. It looks as though he may well have gone beyond it.

:12:43. > :12:47.

:12:47. > :12:54.Yes, indeed, a 8.21, a season's best with the Spaniard. Bjorn Otto

:12:54. > :13:00.trying to join the Renaud Lavillenie. He gets it! That is two

:13:00. > :13:06.centimetres higher than he has ever gone in the past. This is a great,

:13:06. > :13:16.great competition. And you lifetime best for the German. I guess at the

:13:16. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:30.bar all night go up to 5.97. He had had once the year at its. What a

:13:30. > :13:43.

:13:43. > :13:52.performance! What a competition we Lavillenie, first time! It is clear

:13:52. > :14:00.or! This has got to be one of the best competitions of this season.

:14:00. > :14:05.These two are reaching heights that nobody has done this year. The last

:14:05. > :14:10.couple have been first-time clearances. Night Bjorn Otto, he

:14:10. > :14:18.must have thought that he was really pushing Renaud Lavillenie,

:14:18. > :14:23.but all he is doing is pushing him higher. Bjorn Otto has decided to a

:14:23. > :14:28.pass at 5.97 because he knows he has to jump higher than the

:14:28. > :14:35.Frenchman. We could see two athletes in this final attempt in

:14:35. > :14:43.the next height, which has 6.02. We could see Renaud Lavillenie resting

:14:43. > :14:53.on his laurels. What a fantastic jump! The highest in the world this

:14:53. > :14:56.

:14:56. > :15:02.This has been a cracking competition. We might see a six

:15:02. > :15:07.metre jump! Renaud Lavillenie is the world leader, consistent all

:15:07. > :15:16.year. It is brilliant to watch. When you get good competition like

:15:16. > :15:26.this, it could be anywhere, Europeans or anything. A quick word

:15:26. > :15:27.

:15:27. > :15:37.We caught up with the men's 100m a little while ago, this is what

:15:37. > :15:57.

:15:57. > :16:07.happened in the 200m which featured record holder and but for 100 and

:16:07. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:50.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:16:50. > :16:54.here. One is end terms of doing well in this race and run quicker

:16:54. > :17:00.than 20.55, because he needs to do that to have any chance of being

:17:00. > :17:10.selected. Patrick Van lyric of the Netherlands has looked very

:17:10. > :17:11.

:17:11. > :17:15.impressive. -- Luijk. And Chris Clarke looked pretty good

:17:15. > :17:19.in the trials, finishing third in the 200m but the game, has not run

:17:19. > :17:29.the qualifying time and you think his chance has gone, because he

:17:29. > :17:33.

:17:33. > :17:37.would have needed to have done it much to run for. Jonathan Borlee

:17:37. > :17:43.will feel the heat of ChurandyMartina, who was 4th in the

:17:43. > :17:51.Olympic 100m and then disqualified in the Olympic 200m final when he

:17:51. > :17:58.thought he had won a medal. The Dutch could not convert and the

:17:58. > :18:04.women's 200, when one of the favourites for for the medal...

:18:04. > :18:14.They have two chances here. As did the British men, with DanielTalbot

:18:14. > :18:22.

:18:22. > :18:26.Borlee start well but ChurandyMartina already going well.

:18:26. > :18:33.Talbot is going well in fire and Chris Clarke has had a good start

:18:33. > :18:37.in lane seven. -- 5. Talbot just starting to fade as ChurandyMartina

:18:37. > :18:47.goes through, and the Dutchman storms ahead. It is going to be a

:18:47. > :18:48.

:18:48. > :18:53.Dutch 12. -- 1-2. Daniel Talbot with the bronze medal. No doubt

:18:53. > :18:57.about the European champion. He was the class act in this race and he

:18:57. > :19:03.proved it in fine style and his team made followed him through. But

:19:03. > :19:09.a medal for Great Britain. -- team mate. Just looking at this race

:19:09. > :19:15.again, the two Britons get away to cracking start but so does

:19:15. > :19:21.ChurandyMartina. DanielTalbot was leading this 200m final for the

:19:21. > :19:29.first 100m but then Martina started to eat up the ground. He was

:19:29. > :19:33.stronger than everybody else. Talbot just holding off Jonathan

:19:33. > :19:42.Borlee for a brilliant bronze medal. Chris Clarke back in six for 7th

:19:42. > :19:52.place. That was a dominant raised by Martina -- race by Martina, the

:19:52. > :20:03.

:20:03. > :20:08.came 4th that the European Championships, so to get bronze is

:20:08. > :20:12.a brilliant feeling. And to hold off a fast-finishing Jonathan

:20:12. > :20:17.Borlee, well-known Belgian athlete, better known over 400 but he has

:20:17. > :20:21.really been performing well. Could you sense in tracking you down?

:20:21. > :20:25.Definitely an because I know he has a 400m runner, he has that

:20:25. > :20:31.endurance, so I needed to focus on what I was doing and stay relaxed

:20:31. > :20:34.what I was doing and stay relaxed and thankfully, I did. Danny Talbot

:20:34. > :20:40.speaking to Alison Curbishley our 5 Live, and perhaps staking a claim

:20:40. > :20:43.for selection? Absolutely and this is why we talk about the European

:20:43. > :20:47.Championship working in people's favour. That will have shaken up

:20:48. > :20:52.the selectors, showing them he can perform under pressure. That ties

:20:52. > :20:57.up the sprinting from Helsinki. We are going to go across the Atlantic

:20:57. > :21:01.to warmer climes and quicker times and one of the most eagerly

:21:01. > :21:05.anticipated 200m outside of the Olympics. The Jamaican

:21:05. > :21:11.championships, everybody was waiting for the clash of the titans.

:21:11. > :21:14.Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Usain Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Usain

:21:15. > :21:18.Bolt. Lane three is Asafa Powell, Elena five is Usain Bolt and Elaine

:21:18. > :21:24.seven, the current world champion. You can see that Usain Bolt did not

:21:24. > :21:30.get a good start. Look at Yohan Blake streaking away. That is his

:21:30. > :21:35.training park that -- partner and he takes the title, the fastest

:21:35. > :21:42.time in the world. You can see Usain Bolt realise there is nothing

:21:42. > :21:46.he can do. He has to speak in front of Asafa Powell, which she does,

:21:46. > :21:49.of Asafa Powell, which she does, but what a 100m. We are used to

:21:49. > :21:54.Usain Bolt running everybody down but he didn't look like he was

:21:55. > :21:58.doing it at all with Yohan Blake. We did look at that and we also

:21:58. > :22:02.know that Yohan Blake has a great 200m, so he is certainly strong.

:22:02. > :22:07.And what is interesting for me is it was a better run from Asafa

:22:07. > :22:10.Powell. I think he is looking good. We know that sometimes mentally he

:22:10. > :22:16.is not in the game, but I thought he looked really good and that was

:22:16. > :22:20.promising. And he had a slight issue with his groin. And it is not

:22:21. > :22:26.just Jamaicans, the American trials were also incredibly strong.

:22:26. > :22:31.Electric running in the men's 100m. Justin Gatlin winning it in 9.80

:22:31. > :22:35.seconds. Everybody was shot up by the performance of Tyson Gay. He

:22:35. > :22:39.has been very quiet, recovering from injuries, he pulled his

:22:39. > :22:44.hamstring literally write off the bone and has taken his time and ran

:22:44. > :22:47.9.86 seconds and shows everybody he is returning to top form. Another

:22:47. > :22:54.that has printed news from the US trials, the Paralympic trials,

:22:54. > :23:00.Johnny Peacock broke the 100m record -- sprinting news. That

:23:00. > :23:03.record was held by Oscar Pistorius. 10.85 seconds, so that is pretty

:23:03. > :23:08.impressive and put him in contention for a gold medal ahead

:23:08. > :23:11.of Oscar Pistorius. We are all looking forward to the Paralympic

:23:11. > :23:15.Games, it is great to see that. Games, it is great to see that.

:23:15. > :23:25.More sprinting from Helsinki now, it is the men's 4x100 metres relay,

:23:25. > :23:57.

:23:57. > :24:06.and Dwain Chambers is in the holder with 10.23 in the Czech

:24:06. > :24:16.Republic. Germany have a very strong squad,

:24:16. > :24:21.

:24:21. > :24:31.including Unger, the 2004 Olympic finalist.

:24:31. > :24:40.

:24:40. > :24:50.Mark Lewis-Francis running the last the individual event, has felt

:24:50. > :25:04.

:25:04. > :25:14.discomfort in his hamstring -- have a, out in lane eight, the

:25:14. > :25:29.

:25:29. > :25:33.Netherlands. They have really come France will be disappointed that as

:25:33. > :25:37.the defending champions, they couldn't be at full strength. Mark

:25:37. > :25:47.Lewis-Francis is waiting in the sunshine. Christian Malcolm will be

:25:47. > :25:47.

:25:47. > :25:53.the Olympic ranking list after the might of Jamaica, the USA and

:25:53. > :25:57.France. All of those teams are safely through to the Olympic Games.

:25:57. > :26:07.This would be the perfect dress rehearsal, it Great Britain could

:26:07. > :26:26.

:26:26. > :26:30.become the European champions. -- He has always taken a metre. Russia

:26:30. > :26:35.are going well and so are the Netherlands. Oh, no, Great Britain

:26:35. > :26:40.have dropped the baton. GB and Northern Ireland are out of it. So

:26:40. > :26:44.the Netherlands, right on the outside, Martina having a brilliant

:26:44. > :26:50.leg. Russia are coming on strong. The defending champions France are

:26:50. > :26:53.right in the frame and so are Germany in lane three. An untidy

:26:54. > :26:57.changeover for France, so Germany challenging for the gold medal. The

:26:58. > :27:05.Netherlands as well. The Netherlands get it, Germany in

:27:05. > :27:10.second place, France third. And Great Britain are nowhere. 38.34.

:27:10. > :27:16.The Dutch had been looking better and better. Just about it the whole

:27:16. > :27:24.of their squad, as these games have continued. But Great Britain's woes

:27:24. > :27:29.in relay racing continue. Oh, my goodness. Well, what a period for

:27:29. > :27:36.the Dutch are sprinting team. Their women have run a national record

:27:36. > :27:43.and now... Sorry, a European league. And that is a new European League

:27:43. > :27:51.record for the men. They ran so well individually the 200m but a

:27:51. > :27:56.very strong team. The French were not at full strength, but have to

:27:56. > :27:59.be honest, I don't think the French ran as well as they might have done.

:27:59. > :28:03.And if you can hear some of the things that were said by Charles

:28:03. > :28:08.van Commenee about the women's team, goodness only knows how he will

:28:08. > :28:18.feel about that men's relay team. Here we go back to what is an

:28:18. > :28:23.

:28:23. > :28:28.height have looked as though they have looked -- lacked a little bit

:28:28. > :28:32.of energy, and no surprise. Let's go back to this relay. Christian

:28:32. > :28:36.Malcolm to Dwain Chambers should be a safe Exchange, because of the

:28:36. > :28:40.experience they have. It actually happened before this. Christopher

:28:40. > :28:45.Lemaitre had a terrible changes well. The French are having to wait

:28:45. > :28:51.for him. And just watch the last change for the French, did they

:28:51. > :28:56.keep it inside the yellow line. Just about gets it, yes. Germany

:28:56. > :29:02.looking good, but it was the Dutch who were very impressive and it is

:29:02. > :29:08.a good time, 38.4. So they have suddenly thrown themselves into the

:29:08. > :29:11.mix for perhaps a Olympic medals. For Great Britain, it has been a

:29:11. > :29:21.terrible weekend in terms of sprinting. Struggling in terms of

:29:21. > :29:22.

:29:23. > :29:26.getting even four out in the 4x4. It just looked as though Dwain

:29:26. > :29:29.Chambers might have gone slightly early, I don't know, I am sure we

:29:29. > :29:35.will get the analysis but Christian Malcolm just did not quite get to

:29:35. > :29:45.him and never had the baton in his hand. The cream on top of the jam

:29:45. > :29:56.

:29:56. > :30:03.for the Netherlands is the fact already performed a personal best

:30:03. > :30:08.with the 5.92 clearance. To try and win that title, to wrest it away

:30:08. > :30:18.from the defending champion. Goodness me, he has made Renaud

:30:18. > :30:20.

:30:20. > :30:25.Lavillenie defend it with everything he has got. Malte Mohr

:30:25. > :30:35.was the best German pole-vaulter before this. It will be a silver

:30:35. > :30:35.

:30:35. > :30:41.for Bjorn Otto. Can he snatched the gold medal? Well, that was a

:30:41. > :30:51.slightly better effort, but there wasn't much to its, really. Renaud

:30:51. > :30:56.

:30:56. > :31:02.Lavillenie has defended his title. A great competition. Did champion

:31:02. > :31:12.managed to get his act together, and he has done it in a way that he

:31:12. > :31:13.

:31:13. > :31:23.has not managed to do so far this year. Who would bet against him

:31:23. > :31:23.

:31:23. > :31:31.repeating this in the Olympic Games? Well, they won a medal.

:31:31. > :31:37.Bjorn Otto has come across to congratulate him. Not good for

:31:37. > :31:47.Great Britain, though. This story of the failures of our relay teams

:31:47. > :32:02.

:32:02. > :32:12.the discus. Good flight on it as well. That is the longest throw we

:32:12. > :32:18.

:32:18. > :32:28.have seen in the competition. Just waiting go the distance to come up.

:32:28. > :32:38.

:32:38. > :32:44.Here we go again. What can you say? We know that the team has not

:32:45. > :32:52.practised much, they have been scrambled together. Dwain Chambers

:32:52. > :32:59.has not been included in all the relays so far. The change over to

:32:59. > :33:07.Christian Malcolm was not good. Christian Malcolm did not run at

:33:07. > :33:14.bad bend. It looks OK there, but they just have not practised enough.

:33:14. > :33:24.We can be critical, we have every right to be critical. In the last

:33:24. > :33:26.

:33:26. > :33:36.five years, they have hardly managed to make it round with the

:33:36. > :33:36.

:33:36. > :33:44.bat on. Going back when you were in the relay team, I guess you did not

:33:44. > :33:49.practise that much, did you? Well, that was the only relay race I ever

:33:49. > :33:55.ran Andy made it easy for me, the Duke meet the first leg. We were

:33:55. > :33:59.very cautious with her changes. I think this team extend their

:33:59. > :34:04.takeover much more because they want to push themselves right to

:34:04. > :34:09.the edge. They have been a Olympic champions and the know that if they

:34:09. > :34:15.push themselves they can perform very, very well indeed. I think

:34:15. > :34:22.they have just got to think more positively. I think they can rely

:34:22. > :34:30.on their leg speed. It is a high risk policy they are playing, and

:34:30. > :34:39.it's quite a few times it doesn't work. They are over complicating it.

:34:39. > :34:44.They have to find something. Maybe that extension in changing over is

:34:44. > :34:51.their only option, because they are just not quick enough. Two years

:34:51. > :35:01.ago it was Dai Greene taking the title, this time it is Nathan

:35:01. > :35:01.

:35:01. > :35:41.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:35:41. > :35:51.Woodward, the 2011 UK champion. A big tall Guy. He will find lane to

:35:51. > :35:56.

:35:56. > :36:06.quite difficult. Dai Greene elected not to come here to defend his

:36:06. > :36:14.

:36:14. > :36:24.title. Rhys Williams, at a European bronze medal back in 2006, a silver

:36:24. > :36:53.

:36:53. > :37:03.medal in 2010 behind Dai Greene, a champion. The world No. 1 has long

:37:03. > :37:04.

:37:04. > :37:11.ago as 2006. Certainly the oldest man in this final. 16 successive

:37:11. > :37:19.Greek titles he has run. A lot of people fancied the Serbian to do

:37:19. > :37:29.well. He is full of confidence after two new Serbian record

:37:29. > :37:31.

:37:31. > :37:41.yesterday. A chance here for two Britons, in lane two, and Rhys

:37:41. > :38:05.

:38:05. > :38:13.Williams. Could it be called in to expect Rhys Williams to go tearing

:38:13. > :38:21.off. He has learned from his mistakes. The Serbian is going well

:38:21. > :38:29.right on the outside. Rhys Williams always finishes strongly, so watch

:38:29. > :38:38.out for him. They are all in a line at -- off the second to last hurdle.

:38:38. > :38:48.Rhys Williams is coming through the middle. It is not over yet! Rhys

:38:48. > :38:49.

:38:49. > :38:57.Williams is going to win the European title! She get set! What a

:38:57. > :39:01.moment for Rhys Williams! 49.33. I think he may well have booked his

:39:01. > :39:10.seats on the British Olympic team as well as winning this European

:39:10. > :39:15.title. It has been a difficult time for him in the last year or two and

:39:15. > :39:25.finally it has all come together in a really good way. This is double

:39:25. > :39:29.

:39:29. > :39:35.glory for him. This is where he is so good, so strong. He attacks the

:39:35. > :39:43.last hurdle very well. The Serbian was putting him under pressure, but

:39:43. > :39:53.he is very, very good in the last 40 metres. That is the Rhys

:39:53. > :39:55.

:39:56. > :40:02.Williams of a couple of years ago who. That is the European gold

:40:03. > :40:08.medal for him. Nathan Wood would have to settle for 7th place.

:40:08. > :40:13.Williams has the complete set of medals now a, bronze, silver and

:40:13. > :40:23.nine golds in the European Championships. That is an Olympic

:40:23. > :40:31.

:40:32. > :40:40.You like these European Championships, don't you?

:40:40. > :40:46.Congratulations. You know how hard our sport is. In 2003 I won the

:40:47. > :40:52.European juniors and I did not think it would take so long to win

:40:52. > :40:59.the Seniors! Thank God I have done it! Less than a we could go it

:40:59. > :41:05.didn't happen at the trials. there are so many ups and downs and

:41:05. > :41:10.sport. I fell last week. There is such a fine line between running a

:41:11. > :41:17.good grace and messing it all up. It wasn't a perfect race or a

:41:17. > :41:26.really fast time, but I'm so relieved to win. So, Mr Jackson,

:41:26. > :41:32.the title stays in Wales. That is a good thing! He ran as season best

:41:32. > :41:37.to win the title. That is what we ask of our athletes. It is a very

:41:37. > :41:44.difficult when you make those type of mistakes. But confidence leaves

:41:44. > :41:48.you. He crashed out in the trials. You could imagine the anxiety. To

:41:48. > :41:52.go to the European Championships and deliver the performance in your

:41:52. > :41:57.best performance of the year, around of applause. In terms of

:41:58. > :42:04.selection, that will have sealed his place. Absolutely, and well

:42:04. > :42:14.deserved. This is how you Lee McConnell got on in the women's 400

:42:14. > :42:14.

:42:14. > :43:00.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:43:00. > :43:10.run in the individual attempt at on the outside. She is having to

:43:10. > :43:11.

:43:11. > :43:16.attack through their first 200 metres. The Russian is strong in

:43:16. > :43:26.the home straight, and so was the Italian. The Italian has the

:43:26. > :43:29.

:43:29. > :43:39.advantage. McConnell is in 4th at the moment. Here comes the Russian!

:43:39. > :43:43.

:43:43. > :43:49.This Swedish athlete wins it! She has a shattered her personal best.

:43:49. > :43:58.That is a surprise gold medal for Sweden. That is a brilliant runner.

:43:58. > :44:03.The two big names for each other apart there, but I don't think

:44:03. > :44:13.either of them would have reckoned on this week being as good as that.

:44:13. > :44:13.

:44:13. > :44:57.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:44:57. > :45:03.Disappointing for Lee McConnell. She seems to be stuck on 52 1/2

:45:03. > :45:07.seconds. She paid the price for running out in lane eight. She ran

:45:07. > :45:12.such a hard at 200 metres that coming down the home straight she

:45:12. > :45:18.did not have much left in her legs. Very disappointing for her, but

:45:18. > :45:28.hopefully she will be part of that very successful relay squad. Now,

:45:28. > :45:28.

:45:28. > :45:35.the 800 metres. No British interest. It is worth noting that Gareth

:45:36. > :45:45.Wharton came in looking for the Olympic standard. Pure days, the

:45:46. > :46:19.

:46:19. > :46:29.who has the lead and Annan's. For a breast down the back straight and -

:46:29. > :46:38.

:46:38. > :46:48.would be for boss Sir if he could change the junior championship gold

:46:48. > :46:55.

:46:55. > :47:05.they come to the bell. Who is going to be the biggest sprinter? Very

:47:05. > :47:09.

:47:09. > :47:19.slow, playing into the hands of the kickers. Borzakowsky Is well placed.

:47:19. > :47:25.

:47:25. > :47:29.And Bosse as well. Borzakowsky a little adrift. Bosse right there.

:47:29. > :47:39.Trying to get around the big Dutchman on the top bend but not

:47:39. > :47:41.

:47:41. > :47:51.finding enough acceleration. It is the Frenchman at the moment. Bube

:47:51. > :47:51.

:47:51. > :47:57.is going for it. Borzakowsky, the form but title holder, has won it

:47:57. > :48:03.for Russia. -- the former. On they played into his hands. Did they not

:48:03. > :48:09.know? Surely there have -- they knew what he is capable of are the

:48:09. > :48:19.home straight. Well done, you are the European champion. They almost

:48:19. > :48:19.

:48:19. > :48:29.came off the final bend of four or five abreast. In and there was the

:48:29. > :48:48.

:48:48. > :48:54.finish. The brilliant Bube stole a And eight years on from his Olympic

:48:54. > :49:04.title and he has still got a wicked it. -- kick. We will go back to

:49:04. > :49:26.

:49:26. > :49:36.Carvalho is the European Under 23 champion and will be a danger here.

:49:36. > :49:37.

:49:37. > :49:41.David Bustos can kick pretty well. The defending champion is not here.

:49:41. > :49:51.Niclas Sandells snaking through with a very quick finish in his

:49:51. > :49:53.

:49:53. > :50:03.qualifying round. And our turkey to win another medal here? -- our

:50:03. > :50:27.

:50:28. > :50:37.final a few years ago being very slow for the first couple of laps.

:50:37. > :50:47.One or two nervous faces down there. But all Polish that it is very

:50:47. > :50:49.

:50:49. > :50:59.quick on the inside. Away they go. A bit of a race down the first of

:50:59. > :51:05.

:51:05. > :51:10.200m to get position. No real need the championships before hand and

:51:10. > :51:14.Tom Lancashire looked completely out of sorts again. So after that

:51:14. > :51:19.spurt at the beginning, they are doing exactly what we expect them

:51:19. > :51:29.to do, slowing right down. Not really wanting to be at the front

:51:29. > :51:37.of the pack. This is very pedestrian. Three laps to go. In

:51:37. > :51:43.Anderson's Goran Nava or leaves. -- Goran Nava Leeds. After an initial

:51:43. > :51:50.spurt that suggested they were going to go a three: 30 pace, it

:51:51. > :51:58.has slowed down to a crawl. -- 3: 30. There is no guessing what sort

:51:58. > :52:02.of race this will end up being. Bartosz Nowicki is there as well.

:52:02. > :52:10.No sign of Ilham Tanui Ozbilen, the Turk, just about in 4th place, but

:52:10. > :52:13.he is the out and out favourite, even at this pace. That 62.6 first-

:52:13. > :52:22.lap looked quicker than it actually was in terms of the pace they are

:52:22. > :52:25.running. Since then, they have been going around 65, 66. Florian

:52:25. > :52:29.Carvalho gets a little nervous, the Frenchman having a little look

:52:29. > :52:33.around that realising there was nobody behind him. That causes a

:52:33. > :52:40.bit of a surge from Goran Nava. Bartosz Nowicki caught on the

:52:40. > :52:45.outside. They are very tightly bunched. That is where accidents

:52:45. > :52:50.can happen. Ilham Tanui Ozbilen are right in the middle. You could

:52:50. > :52:56.throw a blanket over the slot and cover them fairly comfortably. Very

:52:56. > :53:02.slow, as I said, 67 also for that lap and that is enough for them to

:53:02. > :53:07.get moving. They are out in lapsed -- lane four or five and that is

:53:07. > :53:17.silly, you want to get everyone around the bend. Suddenly it all

:53:17. > :53:19.

:53:19. > :53:25.kicks off. Bartos Nowicki gets a push from Goran Nava the inside.

:53:25. > :53:29.the trio can mix... And there is a former, it is one of the Italians.

:53:29. > :53:34.It is Niclas Sandells of Finland. That is always going happen, you

:53:34. > :53:44.get pushing and shoving that you get clicked from behind. Dmitrijs

:53:44. > :53:45.

:53:45. > :53:55.Jurkevics gets the lead. The first one to really strike for home.

:53:55. > :53:55.

:53:55. > :54:02.Florian Carvalho following him down. And Abdellah high day in on the

:54:02. > :54:08.outside. They are looking for room on the inside. Ilam to their jobs

:54:08. > :54:18.are Len... And someone else goes down. Take someone else with him. -

:54:18. > :54:19.

:54:19. > :54:24.Rehman here comes the Norwegian on the outside, this would be a huge

:54:24. > :54:28.shock. Henrik Ingebrigtsen. He is running out of legs but he might

:54:28. > :54:34.just do it... Henrik Ingebrigtsen wins the gold medal. Well, you

:54:34. > :54:39.could have gone to any aficionado, whatever they might wanna call

:54:39. > :54:46.themselves, anywhere in the world and say pick aware and they would

:54:46. > :54:50.not have picked Henrik Ingebrigtsen of Norway. Florian Carvalho oak

:54:50. > :54:54.took the silver, but what a shock win. He is a former cross-country

:54:54. > :55:00.skier and he has turned his attention to athletics. He has run

:55:00. > :55:06.a new national record this year and now he is the European champion.

:55:06. > :55:11.Unbelievable. That victory is a bit of a fairy story, isn't it? There

:55:11. > :55:16.was a big fall. It was certainly one of the Germans. It may have

:55:17. > :55:21.been Florian Orth. But coming through Ilham Tanui Ozbilen, you

:55:21. > :55:25.certainly thought he was going to come through strongly, and Henrik

:55:25. > :55:30.Ingebrigtsen coming out wide into lane three. He has obviously got

:55:30. > :55:35.the strength from his previous board, cross-country skiing. He

:55:35. > :55:38.just Durbin, kept on going. All of the rest were struggling a little

:55:38. > :55:44.bed. Tremendous strength and endurance coming down the home

:55:44. > :55:54.straight. An incredibly slow winning time, but it doesn't matter.

:55:54. > :55:59.

:55:59. > :56:09.He is the Norwegian European Big problems for Sandra Perkovic.

:56:09. > :56:13.Big problems for Sandra Perkovic. massive. You could have been

:56:13. > :56:18.forgiven for thinking that Sandra Perkovic would just a slow things

:56:18. > :56:23.down to make sure that she got a throw in at around, what, 60 metres,

:56:23. > :56:29.that would have taken her through to get three further froze. But she

:56:29. > :56:39.didn't, she went to -- I went for broke and it has paid off. Nadine

:56:39. > :56:39.

:56:39. > :56:42.mother has led since the start of the competition. -- Muller has led.

:56:42. > :56:50.So Sandra Perkovic, in defence of her title, looks as though she is

:56:50. > :56:53.doing it. 67.62, a big lead for the doing it. 67.62, a big lead for the

:56:53. > :56:57.Croatian. Another great threat from Sandra Perkovic and a dramatic

:56:57. > :57:00.men's 1,500m final. The next live action on the track will be the 110

:57:00. > :57:10.metres final, but first we will catch up with the women's 100m

:57:10. > :57:31.

:57:31. > :57:41.hurdles final, which happened shown in the semi-finals, the

:57:41. > :57:51.

:57:51. > :57:55.favourite to retain her title this Yanit. -- is Yanit. Our saying that

:57:55. > :57:59.she was the favourite -- I was saying, she would retain the title,

:57:59. > :58:09.but the rest of the medals are really up for grabs. She just has

:58:09. > :58:09.

:58:09. > :58:19.to keep their game together,, -- keep her game together, shot in --

:58:19. > :58:34.

:58:34. > :58:44.from the defending champion but she is going so well. She has really

:58:44. > :58:46.

:58:46. > :58:55.got to work for this. The Turkish FA coming away. And Yanit gets it.

:58:55. > :59:01.12.81 seconds, into quite a strong headwind. Halfway down, she was

:59:01. > :59:04.being challenged, but she held perform superbly. Talay Came

:59:04. > :59:14.through very strongly. A good performance, European champion once

:59:14. > :59:22.

:59:22. > :59:26.would expect it to. And Talay starts to get close. And on the

:59:26. > :59:33.last two flights, the defending champion fights harder and it is so

:59:33. > :59:37.close on the line for third. Such a good starter, and then keeps the

:59:37. > :59:45.rhythm going. Doesn't panic at the end. Keeps her technique well.

:59:45. > :59:55.Powerful and stocky, but quick over the hurdles. Turkey take the gold

:59:55. > :00:16.

:00:16. > :00:26.Yanit good. Retaining the title she Turkey or having a fantastic

:00:26. > :00:26.

:00:26. > :01:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:01:16. > :01:26.I'm afraid that might be the end of his hopes. Artur Noga got away

:01:26. > :01:29.

:01:29. > :01:39.cleanly. Coming through as well was the Swedish runner. Philip Nossmy.

:01:39. > :01:41.

:01:41. > :01:49.That was it terrible last hurdle. It was Philip Nossmy who came

:01:49. > :01:56.through to take the automatics second place. Ladji Doucoure will

:01:56. > :02:06.take no further part in the competition. Philip Nossmy got

:02:06. > :02:12.

:02:12. > :02:22.second place. A season's best for William Sharman, but they don't

:02:22. > :02:59.

:03:00. > :03:07.think that will be quick enough brilliant start. Alexander John is

:03:07. > :03:14.going well. Just look at Sergey Shubenkov, she is absolutely

:03:14. > :03:20.flying! Into a headwind. That is one of the fastest times ever by an

:03:20. > :03:27.European athlete. 21 years old. Alexander John has a problem it is

:03:27. > :03:37.growing. That was a brilliant start by Sergey Shubenkov. One an

:03:37. > :03:47.exciting prospect he is. Look how far away he is from the others. He

:03:47. > :03:48.

:03:48. > :03:54.is only 21 and has got so much more improvement to come. He looks like

:03:54. > :04:04.he is still filling out as well, physically. Good speed. He has good

:04:04. > :04:07.

:04:07. > :04:17.leg speed. That is impressive, into a headwind. So, one of the fastest

:04:17. > :04:45.

:04:45. > :04:55.times ever behind the European good start. Gregory Sedoc is

:04:55. > :05:04.starting to come away. Gregory Sedoc going very well. Konstadinos

:05:04. > :05:09.Douvalidis in no really good fight for second place. Konstadinos

:05:09. > :05:15.Douvalidis took second spot here, I think that is a surprise. Some

:05:15. > :05:25.really good hurdling here. Gregory Sedoc with the new personal best to

:05:25. > :05:29.win it. These hurdles are producing some fantastic performances. Really

:05:29. > :05:37.impressed with Sergey Shubenkov in the last heat, and I think Gregory

:05:37. > :05:44.Sedoc there was just cruising. Konstadinos Douvalidis just taking

:05:44. > :05:50.its from Emanuele Abate on the line. And national records for

:05:50. > :06:00.Konstadinos Douvalidis. The two fastest losers will come from that

:06:00. > :06:04.

:06:04. > :06:14.semi-final, Emanuele Abate and Gregory Sedoc. C6 has not got it

:06:14. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:25.all together. That is long! Finally, he has produced something. He

:06:25. > :06:26.

:06:26. > :06:34.looked relieved more than anything else. C6 led the qualifiers at 8.34.

:06:34. > :06:44.He gets such tremendous height of the board. That is big! 8.33.

:06:44. > :06:47.

:06:47. > :06:56.Some very impressive hurdling there. William Sharman has not make the

:06:56. > :07:06.final. He will be disappointed. It is unfortunate that he has not been

:07:06. > :07:13.able to nail the performance that we all think he is capable of.

:07:13. > :07:20.guys have been struggling with injury. Unfortunately for William

:07:20. > :07:30.Sharman, I think he will miss out. First of all, Sergey Shubenkov,

:07:30. > :07:36.13.09. Absolutely brilliant. She is young, strong, enthusiastic. Below

:07:36. > :07:43.the hurdle he is sharp, and when he hits the floor he is very accurate.

:07:43. > :07:53.For me, he has got huge promise. 13.09 is a very impressive

:07:53. > :07:59.performance. Gregory Sedoc, not much between them. When the final

:07:59. > :08:07.happens there is a lot more attention. The person who is the

:08:07. > :08:13.smoothest will probably take the title. Oliver did not make the team,

:08:13. > :08:23.the US record holder. Two other Americans ran it over -- run under

:08:23. > :08:43.

:08:43. > :08:50.13 seconds. So, the final of the this event this year. This is a

:08:50. > :08:59.world-class final here. The new Italian record holder, Emanuele

:08:59. > :09:09.Abate, goes in lane one. The very experienced Gregory Sedoc, former

:09:09. > :09:16.

:09:16. > :09:23.or indoor champion. Gregory Sedoc, he hit 13.15 in the semi-final,

:09:23. > :09:33.cruising. Nobody was as fast as Sergey Shubenkov. This 6th fastest

:09:33. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:47.European in history. Artur Noga, a very experienced athlete indeed,

:09:47. > :09:51.and are left -- an Olympic finalist in Beijing. Konstadinos Douvalidis,

:09:51. > :10:01.the Greek record holder across every age group. He has improved

:10:01. > :10:04.

:10:04. > :10:12.his senior record here. Another very good youngster, Philip Nossmy

:10:12. > :10:17.in 2001 and 2002, but he has come on strong here. Alexander John, who

:10:17. > :10:22.was holding his groin when he crossed the line in the semi-finals,

:10:22. > :10:29.but he seems to have recovered. This year's German champion. We are

:10:29. > :10:39.expecting all the action to happen in the centre. Gregory Sedoc, 30

:10:39. > :11:10.

:11:10. > :11:17.time that Britain has not had a start position, but going well.

:11:17. > :11:25.Gregory Sedoc is going well. It will be very close. Sergey

:11:25. > :11:34.Shubenkov just as the edge. The Russian wins it. Artur Noga got the

:11:34. > :11:39.bronze. Not as fast as it was in the semi-finals. This guy is truly

:11:40. > :11:45.world class. In this sort of form, he will just continue to get better

:11:45. > :11:55.and better and better. Sergey Shubenkov, listen out to that name,

:11:55. > :11:55.

:11:55. > :12:03.a great name for the future. European champion at the age of 21.

:12:03. > :12:07.What you look for in champions, and for people you have high

:12:07. > :12:12.expectations of is the ability to deliver on the day. It wasn't as

:12:12. > :12:22.good technically as the semi-final, but Gregory Sedoc put him under a

:12:22. > :12:32.lot of pressure. There is the start of Sergey Shubenkov, he almost has

:12:32. > :12:33.

:12:33. > :12:39.his head between his knees, doesn't he? Gregory Sedoc hit a hurdle, as

:12:39. > :12:49.did the Russian, but he kept his nerve. He is quick off the last

:12:49. > :12:53.

:12:53. > :12:58.barrier. Look how close Artur Noga and Sergey Shubenkov gets. It was

:12:58. > :13:04.Sergey Shubenkov who finished the race lot better, and that is why

:13:04. > :13:14.the gold medal is his. It was a good run for Artur Noga in third

:13:14. > :13:21.

:13:21. > :13:31.place, wasn't it? He takes the A great performance from the Sergey

:13:31. > :13:32.

:13:32. > :13:39.Shubenkov. He is a young man, only 21. She will get technically more

:13:39. > :13:49.competent as he pushes himself. She will be one to watch. Let's catch

:13:49. > :14:26.

:14:26. > :14:32.what he came here for. He is out at greatest javelin throwers we have

:14:32. > :14:42.ever seen. This is the first round. Good conditions for javelin

:14:42. > :14:49.

:14:49. > :14:58.throwing. Just spot on the 65 metre mark. Amazingly, she was Germany's

:14:58. > :15:02.only medallist in Beijing. She won a bronze on that occasion, and as

:15:02. > :15:12.silver medal in the Europeans behind her team mate. She is

:15:12. > :15:14.

:15:14. > :15:21.what has been a great year. Again another first time clearance. Came

:15:21. > :15:25.in at 2.24. First time over 2.28. That is the start he wanted. Stamp

:15:25. > :15:35.your authority on the competition. He is the man to beat. So far, so

:15:35. > :15:41.

:15:41. > :15:47.good. In the lead. The defending European champion, Linda Stahle has

:15:47. > :15:55.seen her team mate get off to a great start. But Britain's Goldie

:15:55. > :16:01.Sayers had a foul in the first round. What can Stahl do? It is

:16:01. > :16:06.just shy of the 60 metre mark. It was a surprise when she won two

:16:06. > :16:16.years ago in Barcelona. And her coach was also the coach to the

:16:16. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:31.former world champion. There is her throw. He had a difficult start,

:16:31. > :16:38.but it was a good first effort. O' Stanys oh and he goes clear! Well

:16:38. > :16:42.that is a surprise. To him as well I think. He is not renowned as one

:16:42. > :16:48.of the top high jumpers in Europe. Well, he may well be pushing

:16:49. > :16:58.himself forward here. It is not the highest level of competition, but a

:16:59. > :17:00.

:17:00. > :17:09.good second clearance. Yes, he says! Well that equals his personal

:17:09. > :17:14.best. One of the stalwarts of the British team, Goldie Sayers, a foul

:17:14. > :17:23.in the first round. Could do with something on the board here. Very

:17:23. > :17:29.fast approach. And a good throw. Didn't exactly nail it. It wasn't

:17:29. > :17:33.the really speedy approach we have become accustomed to see her

:17:33. > :17:38.finishing off with. But jams the brakes on just before she goes on

:17:38. > :17:48.the line or over it and that is a good throw. That will put her in

:17:48. > :17:52.

:17:52. > :18:00.the mix. Still Obergfoll leads. She likes it. So does the team coach.

:18:00. > :18:06.There we see it. 63.01 and she is in a medal position in third.

:18:06. > :18:10.Grabarz knows that a clearance at that sort of height may well be

:18:10. > :18:14.good enough in this level of competition. He has done this on

:18:14. > :18:19.numerous occasions, but he is improving all season long. Yes that

:18:19. > :18:23.is it. That is better. That is the sort of form he has been showing on

:18:23. > :18:30.the circuit. And to think that before this year he had never

:18:30. > :18:38.cleared 2.28. That is the second time clearance, 2.31 and he takes a

:18:38. > :18:42.hangle hold on this competition. Turning into a very good competitor.

:18:42. > :18:52.Just hits it on the way down, but it stays in place. The only man

:18:52. > :18:53.

:18:53. > :19:00.clear so far. He had a personal best equalling 2.28. The first

:19:00. > :19:04.attempt at 2.31. Looked as though it may be too much of a stretch.

:19:04. > :19:11.But Stanys has cleared! Goodness me! Robbie Grabarz was thinking,

:19:11. > :19:20.well, that might be it, but no. Stanys takes this competition on

:19:20. > :19:30.with a big new personal best. Clearing 2.31 at his second attempt.

:19:30. > :19:34.

:19:34. > :19:44.Where has that come from? Good clearance as well. Nice and clean.

:19:44. > :19:44.

:19:44. > :19:54.Still in the second round. This is remember rick of the Ukraine. That

:19:54. > :20:02.

:20:02. > :20:10.was a big improvement. Rebryk is a good competitor a former world

:20:10. > :20:16.junior champion and 63.4 4, that is further than Goldie Sayers and she

:20:16. > :20:26.is in third place. Robbie Grabarz needs to clear this. No! Well he is

:20:26. > :20:30.still in the lead, but I'm sure Stanys then... No. Well this is

:20:30. > :20:37.beginning to look what you would expect, a little too far for him

:20:37. > :20:46.now. Rebryk in the fifth round. Nobody's managed to throw anything

:20:46. > :20:53.further so far. But this athlete has. Oh wow! The first javelin to

:20:53. > :21:02.fly clearly past the 65 metre line. All of a Sunday Obergfoll, Stahl

:21:02. > :21:05.and etch -- everyone else is under the cosh from Rebryk. The

:21:05. > :21:13.Ukrainians are having a good European championships. The thing I

:21:13. > :21:16.like about her is she really attacks it. Every fibre of her

:21:16. > :21:25.muscle goes into that throw. She is going to enjoy this distance when

:21:26. > :21:33.it comes up. The question is, can anybody beat it? 66.86, a new

:21:33. > :21:39.Ukrainian national record and first place. Rebryk was the champion with

:21:39. > :21:46.that new record. 66.86. Goldie Sayers in fourth. Fourth place? I

:21:46. > :21:49.don't know whether to say how do you feel? It's, when I miss out on

:21:49. > :21:55.medal, its always by a few centimetres. But it was a great

:21:55. > :22:00.competition. I thought my 62 metre throw was weer the -- better than

:22:00. > :22:05.that. But I didn't have any more time. So frustrating, but you know

:22:05. > :22:12.it was a good competition. Impleased with the way I threw and

:22:12. > :22:16.I have learned a lot. It is good preparation for London. Robbie

:22:16. > :22:22.Grabarz came here to win the title. Of course Olympic selection assured

:22:22. > :22:30.for him and this will be good practice for him. He needs this big

:22:30. > :22:37.competition experience. 2.33, third attempt. Well that was better.

:22:37. > :22:42.Nearly had it there. Well he hasn't got the gold yet, not for certain.

:22:42. > :22:47.He is still in the lead. But if the Lithuanian can go clear, he would

:22:47. > :22:57.lose the gold. But Grabarz has been had a good competition. That was

:22:57. > :22:59.

:22:59. > :23:06.better. He had the height, just came down on it. 2.31 his best. So

:23:06. > :23:12.this it it for Stanys. Guaranteed a silver medal. Can he steal the gold

:23:12. > :23:17.are Robbie Grabarz? It would have to require him to do another

:23:17. > :23:24.personal best here. No. Well it has been a great competition, but there

:23:24. > :23:29.is the European champion. Silver goes to Lithuania. They are

:23:29. > :23:35.delighted and so they should be. A very good competition. 2.31 was as

:23:35. > :23:45.high as it went. But what a year he is having and who knows what the

:23:45. > :23:46.

:23:46. > :23:55.Olympics will bring for Robbie Grabarz. Disappointment for Oni.

:23:55. > :24:05.Stanys can look back with pride on his performance. Grabarz takes the

:24:05. > :24:10.gold medal and the title for Britain. What a year he is having.

:24:10. > :24:17.European champion how does that sounds? Pretty good. I'm eve the

:24:17. > :24:21.moon. It was a battle. How did that sort of mess with your head.

:24:21. > :24:24.kind of, the pressure, I added that pressure to myself, because coming

:24:25. > :24:29.to London it will be worse. So I almost wanted to experience the

:24:29. > :24:33.extra pressure. I wanted to learn a lot and I was telling people I'm

:24:33. > :24:38.coming for the title and I have achieved my goal. With the

:24:38. > :24:45.performance, were you pleased with that? I didn't think that would

:24:45. > :24:55.gate medal. Not win. But all I came here for is the title. We're ready

:24:55. > :25:29.

:25:29. > :25:39.Hejnova heads off. They have a strong quartet. The British team

:25:39. > :25:40.

:25:40. > :25:47.has Shana cox, who took the final leg in the semi, Lee McConnell and

:25:47. > :25:57.Eilidh Child brings the baton home. She ran superbly in the semi-finals.

:25:57. > :26:06.The last time Britain won was back in 1969 with the name of Lillian

:26:06. > :26:16.Board attached to that team. France, former champions as well, back in

:26:16. > :26:17.

:26:18. > :26:23.1994 and Russia in lane two, the defending champions. Interesting to

:26:24. > :26:28.see the composition of the British team. Christine Ohurougu warmed up

:26:28. > :26:33.with the team, but she is being saved for the Olympics. It is the

:26:33. > :26:42.exactly the same team as competed in the semi-finals. But a different

:26:42. > :26:47.order, Steve? Yes interesting. Shana Cox has not started quickly.

:26:47. > :26:52.Germany with Cremer, well up on her. I think there is three or four

:26:52. > :26:59.interesting teams. The French were a revelation in qualification and

:27:00. > :27:06.Shana has either got to get moving because Eilidh Child did lead them

:27:06. > :27:12.off well. The Czech Republic have a great team. Hejnova has got them

:27:12. > :27:17.off to a good start. And Nicola Sanders will find herself in fourth

:27:17. > :27:22.or fifth here. Germany looking strong, the French just cruising,

:27:22. > :27:31.the Ukraine right on the shoulders of Nicola Sanders and the Ukrainian

:27:31. > :27:41.about to go past Nicola. Romanian - - Romania fighting hard. Even

:27:41. > :27:41.

:27:41. > :27:46.Germany have been overtaken by the you crane runner. What has Nicola

:27:46. > :27:52.Sanders got left? She is in fourth. It is Germany ahead of Britain at

:27:52. > :27:58.the moment. They come to the next change over, you caing, Germany and

:27:58. > :28:08.look at the French athlete gaining as Lee McConnell waits. The French

:28:08. > :28:14.have a good athlete on this leg, gay yacht. -- Gayot. Lee McConnell

:28:14. > :28:24.rung outside of the legs of the athlete outside her. Ukraine will

:28:24. > :28:26.

:28:26. > :28:33.finish strongly. They have got Lohvynenko on the last leg. The

:28:33. > :28:41.French will finish strongly and Lee McConnell and the French team

:28:41. > :28:50.dragging Lee past Germany. But the yau crane are way out ahead.

:28:50. > :28:55.defending champions, Russia, are way out of it. France in second.

:28:55. > :29:00.Where are Britain? They may have lost a place in that changeover. In

:29:00. > :29:05.fact Eilidh Child is still in third. She ran so well in the systemy

:29:05. > :29:15.final. She has been promoted if you like into the anchor leg and she is

:29:15. > :29:19.

:29:19. > :29:25.flying. The French athlete was second in the systemy finals. Has

:29:25. > :29:32.Eilidh clield got enough to get gold? But she is being chased by

:29:32. > :29:38.the Czech Republic. Has Eilidh Child got anything left? The

:29:38. > :29:44.Ukrainians will be champions. And France coming through really

:29:44. > :29:54.quickly. Eilidh Child trying to get on the rostrum. But she was blocked

:29:54. > :30:02.

:30:02. > :30:07.finish that was. At one point it looked like we might even win

:30:07. > :30:17.silver. In the end we were run out of it. An inspired run by the

:30:17. > :30:21.

:30:21. > :30:29.athlete on the final leg by France. The Ukraine have had a superb

:30:29. > :30:34.European Championships and they just finished it off in style. So

:30:34. > :30:42.close for the British team. I think this French team are going to get

:30:42. > :30:52.better, as well. The experiment to put Kelly child on the last leg

:30:52. > :31:17.

:31:17. > :31:22.had a personal best. That jump was weighed down on what he has already

:31:22. > :31:30.done so far today. He can be absolutely delighted with what he

:31:30. > :31:37.has achieved here. Michel Torneus looks as if he has got a medal

:31:37. > :31:47.winning jump right from back in the first round. JJ Jegede finishes in

:31:47. > :31:50.

:31:50. > :31:59.4th place. There was the result of the long jump. Sebastian Bayer

:31:59. > :32:09.improved by one centimetre on his fast -- on his last jump. We saw a

:32:09. > :32:21.

:32:21. > :32:31.We had some high hopes for the men's discus, but it didn't quite

:32:31. > :32:41.work out. He has been absolutely dominant in the men's discus

:32:41. > :32:44.

:32:44. > :32:51.competition. Britain have a finalist in Lawrence Okoye. Harting,

:32:51. > :33:00.world champion twice, he is the longest in the world this year. He

:33:00. > :33:06.has been over 70 metres. Lawrence Okoye finished down in 12th place.

:33:06. > :33:10.Disappointed. I didn't cope with the it conditions today. I would

:33:10. > :33:19.just go home and training come back stronger. Is it too soon to say,

:33:19. > :33:29.what have you learnt from today? Just to learn to cope with their

:33:29. > :33:30.

:33:30. > :33:35.conditions. If it rains, it rains. Steve Backley often talks about the

:33:35. > :33:41.-- controlling the controllable scum or was that not there today

:33:41. > :33:46.for you? Yes, I deserve to come 12th. If it rains, it rains, I have

:33:46. > :33:53.got to make sure I can deal with that in the future. It is five

:33:53. > :33:59.weeks' time is when it matters. Today matters very much, and I'm

:33:59. > :34:05.very disappointed. The disappointment was obvious

:34:05. > :34:14.there. He is almost in shock. good to see an athlete who can

:34:14. > :34:24.pinpoint a reason why he has not done well. He comes from rugby fans

:34:24. > :34:28.

:34:28. > :34:38.-- and he does not have a lot of experience. Let's catch up with her

:34:38. > :35:02.

:35:02. > :35:12.difficult lien to run from, Leigh and eight, for Richard back. --

:35:12. > :35:26.

:35:26. > :35:36.got off very hard. Donald Sandford gaining on Richard Buck all the

:35:36. > :35:55.

:35:55. > :36:00.Hungarian athlete is going well. The bronze medal is up for grabs.

:36:00. > :36:05.The Fringe then came through very quickly. I think you might have got

:36:05. > :36:12.the bronze medal. This guy can't believe it. He is one of the

:36:12. > :36:16.youngest men in the field. He wasn't necessarily the fastest, but

:36:16. > :36:22.all this sudden he finds himself in pole position and with their gold

:36:22. > :36:32.medal. It was a great last 100 metres. He virtually came from

:36:32. > :37:00.

:37:00. > :37:10.nowhere. At this point Richard but bronze medal, right up to the last

:37:10. > :37:10.

:37:10. > :38:37.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 125 seconds

:38:37. > :38:47.athlete he is certainly fastest over the flats, but not as good as

:38:47. > :38:53.the Russian over the hurdles. The Russian it is coming away! She

:38:53. > :39:00.becomes a champion. The Ukrainian have managed to get third. That is

:39:00. > :39:06.a very quick time. 53.77. That increases her stranglehold at the

:39:06. > :39:16.top of the world rankings this year. At perfect finish for her in terms

:39:16. > :39:40.

:39:40. > :39:45.of the Olympic Games. The fastest There was massive disappointment

:39:45. > :39:54.earlier on in the sprint relay with the British men yet again not able

:39:54. > :40:02.to get that Matton round. Guys, what do I say? Has the post-

:40:02. > :40:12.mortems started? Gutted, what can you say? I take full responsibility.

:40:12. > :40:17.I got thrown out a little bit by the turn. We didn't make it. It was

:40:17. > :40:22.a fantastic start, you were really quick round the turn. Looking from

:40:22. > :40:29.our position, it was at full stretch down there. Was it a case

:40:29. > :40:34.of stretching the marks? It wasn't. If anything, we brought it in a bit.

:40:34. > :40:38.I lost momentum going through the acceleration zone and that is where

:40:38. > :40:44.you have got to be putting your foot down. Dwain Chambers did it

:40:44. > :40:51.really well. It is all my fault. I will take full responsibility.

:40:51. > :40:55.is very brave. Is it a missed opportunity? At the end of the day,

:40:55. > :41:01.we all came here to do well for our country and unfortunately it didn't

:41:01. > :41:06.work out. We will stick together as a team and learn from our mistakes.

:41:06. > :41:12.James, how difficult is it as a third runner looking up to see what

:41:12. > :41:21.has happened? It is a bit upsetting, but we will come together as a team.

:41:21. > :41:30.We have to take it as a team. Mistakes happen. It is better to

:41:30. > :41:34.make mistakes now than at the Olympics. Mark, a huge

:41:34. > :41:43.disappointment this week in the women's team, a lot of frustration

:41:43. > :41:49.and throwing of mother. How is the men's Dean? We are amazing as a

:41:49. > :41:54.unit. We work well together. I can't really say too much and what

:41:54. > :41:59.happened, because I was on the other end. We were ready to will

:41:59. > :42:04.today, had great team spirit in the warm-up. Three guys here they are

:42:04. > :42:08.capable of running very fast. It was disappointing but we didn't

:42:08. > :42:13.execute or opportunity to come out here and deliver. As we look

:42:13. > :42:22.forward with five weeks ago, will this unit change in terms of

:42:22. > :42:30.personnel? We don't know. We will review. What ever the team that

:42:30. > :42:36.goes out there for the final, we will do the best to our -- best of

:42:36. > :42:40.our ability. You didn't take part in the individual like you, but

:42:40. > :42:44.argue confident you will get the nod for the Olympic Games? I don't

:42:45. > :42:48.know. I have just got to do my best to support the team when I'm out

:42:48. > :42:56.here, and I'm just waiting for Tuesday or whenever the

:42:56. > :43:02.announcement was made. Thank you for stopping to talk to us.

:43:02. > :43:07.I would think Charles will probably be giving them their hair dryer

:43:07. > :43:13.treatment. It is better to make the mistakes now. They are still a team

:43:13. > :43:21.better trying to gel. They have not had time to practise. Five weeks is

:43:21. > :43:25.a long time. They have a lot of time to practise. Dwain Chambers

:43:25. > :43:33.has been let out of the relay team because we did not think he was

:43:33. > :43:37.going to be eligible, but he is now. So they have got time to work on it.

:43:37. > :43:43.He has been in relay teams before. They still know each other very

:43:43. > :43:53.well. I hope that they can regather and focus because they can run well.

:43:53. > :44:02.

:44:02. > :44:06.Time now for the final track event of drama of these championships.

:44:06. > :44:16.Changes again in the British team from that which ran in the

:44:16. > :44:17.

:44:17. > :44:25.qualification. The Netherlands could be strong. The Czech Republic

:44:25. > :44:31.team had the individual winner, he will go on the second leg. That is

:44:31. > :44:41.an interesting selection from them. Poland will be very strong. They

:44:41. > :44:43.

:44:43. > :44:53.looked good in qualification. If they get off to a decent start,

:44:53. > :44:54.

:44:55. > :45:04.watch out. But Batten has been entrusted to these four. Nigel

:45:05. > :45:13.

:45:13. > :45:23.Irvine has been moved to the first put out. It has the Borlee twins

:45:23. > :45:27.

:45:27. > :45:37.there. Germany with Plass, Gaba, drugger -- Kruger and Scneider.

:45:37. > :45:37.

:45:37. > :45:45.Outside will be the Ukrainian team. Ryemyen. We saw his sister in the

:45:45. > :45:55.200 metres. She didn't get to take the baton around with their team.

:45:55. > :46:00.

:46:00. > :46:05.Melnykov and hut soil there. -- Hutsol there. Can Britain's men do

:46:05. > :46:10.better. I think they would have come here trying to win. Is this

:46:10. > :46:17.quartet capable of doing that? Belgium will be strong, the Czech

:46:17. > :46:27.Republic could go well and Poland in lane four, inside Great Britain.

:46:27. > :46:39.

:46:39. > :46:49.There may not be much to choose between them all here. Men's 4X4

:46:49. > :46:50.

:46:50. > :46:56.hundred relay, first leg. Nigel Levine might not have expected to

:46:56. > :47:03.be handed this role. Let's see how he copes with I. We are also

:47:03. > :47:07.watching for lane infringements, we have had so many. Venel, who is

:47:07. > :47:13.running for France here was disqualified himself, as was

:47:13. > :47:23.Richard Buck. Intou far, so good and Nigel whre vine has started

:47:23. > :47:30.well. Not much to choose between them. Belgium have had a poor start.

:47:30. > :47:36.Gillet has had a poor run. Nigel Levine could well be in the lead.

:47:36. > :47:42.Williams with the baton. Conrad Williams safely with the baton in

:47:42. > :47:48.his hands and he ran a superb leg in the semi-final. Well ahead of

:47:48. > :47:58.Gaba of Germany and coming across to the inside. Looking comfortable.

:47:58. > :48:02.

:48:02. > :48:11.The man going for Belgium, Jonathan Borlee is a sub 45 4 hundred metre

:48:11. > :48:19.runner. They are all bearing down on Conrad Williams of Great Britain.

:48:19. > :48:28.Britain will try and win from the front. It is closing up here. Their

:48:28. > :48:38.ten metre lead became a seven or eight metre lead. Tobin has the

:48:38. > :48:39.

:48:39. > :48:43.baton. Bouckaert for Belgium. Germany further adrift. But has Rob

:48:43. > :48:48.Tobin judged this right? Now he will work around that top bend and

:48:48. > :48:53.stretch them all. He is doing that pretty well. Richard Buck will be

:48:53. > :48:57.waiting to take the baton from Rob Tobin and Tobin has got to give him

:48:57. > :49:03.something to work with. There are some good athletes on the final

:49:03. > :49:09.legs for the other teams. This is a potential gold medal winning

:49:09. > :49:16.performance from the British team. Kevin Borlee has the baton for

:49:16. > :49:19.Belgium. He is the fastest man in Europe this year and he is chasing

:49:19. > :49:24.Richard Buck. He must know Borlee is coming. He is already looking at

:49:24. > :49:27.the screen. What will boar Lee do? He is going to sit in there are to

:49:27. > :49:34.a while and see whether he can rest around that binned. He is hanging

:49:34. > :49:38.in on the shoulder of Buck. What is he saying, it is Britain against

:49:38. > :49:42.Belgium and Borlee is on the outside, buck tries to respond.

:49:43. > :49:48.Germany are chasing down with Scneider. But Belgium will take the

:49:49. > :49:56.gold. Britain will Lang on for silver. Borlee wins it for Belgium.

:49:56. > :50:00.Buck for Britain and then Germany taking bronze. That is a good

:50:00. > :50:06.performance from this Belgium team. That is the best they can do. No

:50:06. > :50:16.Martyn Rooney in that squad and there are the likes of Jack Green

:50:16. > :50:18.

:50:18. > :50:23.and day green, all sorts of permutations available. They are

:50:23. > :50:31.the champions. Worthy champions and an excellent performance from

:50:36. > :50:40.here. They get the silver. worthy champions, Colin, as soon as

:50:40. > :50:45.we saw Kevin Borlee on Richard's shoulder, we knew it would be a

:50:45. > :50:52.challenge. Yes they have a supreme team with those two young men, any

:50:52. > :50:59.time you see the Borlees any any competition, you know it will be

:50:59. > :51:05.close. Silver for the British team. There was a silver in the 10,000

:51:05. > :51:11.for Jo pavey. It has been a long time coming, how are you feeling?

:51:11. > :51:14.It has been fun doing track Chris year and getting a medal, I'm

:51:14. > :51:18.thrilled. At the start of the season it was about the marathon

:51:18. > :51:24.and looking to London. And now you know, once the decision was made

:51:24. > :51:29.for you when you didn't compete in London, sle, was then made and --

:51:29. > :51:37.selection was made and then to come awhich a medal you must be over the

:51:37. > :51:41.moon? Yes it has been a blessing in disguise. If I had won the marathon

:51:42. > :51:49.place I couldn't have turned it down. But I'm enjoying the track

:51:49. > :51:56.and it is making me feel young again. I'm really thrilled. Just

:51:56. > :52:00.four more medallists to tell you about. Jonathan Edwards is still

:52:00. > :52:10.the record holder in the triple the record holder in the triple

:52:10. > :52:17.

:52:17. > :52:24.jump. But dn Ato surprised everyone with his form. Donato hit a big one

:52:24. > :52:30.and he hit a few big jumps during the competition. 17.63. And a big

:52:30. > :52:35.performance with a big gold medal. That came in the first round.

:52:35. > :52:44.saw a brilliant men's pole vault, the women's didn't come up to that

:52:44. > :52:54.standard, but the conditions were atrocious. Only two others cleared

:52:54. > :52:54.

:52:54. > :53:04.this height. But she won the gold. Strutz of Germany was in second

:53:04. > :53:11.place. No surprises in the hammer, Pars dominated from start to finish.

:53:11. > :53:15.He launch the hammer 79.72 and had four other throws measured further

:53:15. > :53:25.than anybody else. There was a first gold for Spain in the

:53:25. > :53:26.

:53:26. > :53:36.Championships in the high jump. She won a rather average competition.

:53:36. > :53:41.

:53:41. > :53:48.The Spaniard won it on count back. Splits for the men in 4X4. -- four

:53:48. > :53:57.by 4 hundred. And the European leading time for the winners,

:53:57. > :54:00.Belgium. Silver for Great Britain Belgium. Silver for Great Britain

:54:00. > :54:04.and Germany took the bronze. We said we would talk about how

:54:04. > :54:08.successful it would be having a European championships every two

:54:08. > :54:11.years. What do you think? From a British point of view, the London

:54:11. > :54:16.Olympics are so much in the forefront of everyone's minds, we

:54:16. > :54:21.haven't sent our best team out. But the rest of Europe I think, they

:54:21. > :54:25.have taken this competition seriously and we have seen some

:54:25. > :54:31.fantastic performances, and the times and the standards have been

:54:31. > :54:36.high. So it is not easy to call, but you know it is what it is.

:54:36. > :54:41.will take time to bed in, Colin? Yes, this is the first one and for

:54:41. > :54:44.them to start on a year when we have an Olympic games in Europe it

:54:44. > :54:47.does make it difficult for the athletes to focus and put

:54:47. > :54:52.themselves in a position and make a decision. You can imagine it is

:54:52. > :54:56.quite bold for an athlete to desierbgsd this is what I'm going

:54:56. > :55:00.to do, -- decide this is what I'm going to do only a month before the

:55:00. > :55:04.Olympics. But we have seen some cracking competition and good world

:55:04. > :55:12.leads. In term of British performances we started off with Mo

:55:12. > :55:20.in the 5,000. He won as expected. Yes and no win is a an easy win.

:55:20. > :55:25.But it was job done, move on. We have to look forward to Mo. He will

:55:25. > :55:30.face tough competition in the five or the ten. It was job done.

:55:30. > :55:35.Robbie Grabarz in the high jump, it is a big break through and he can

:55:35. > :55:40.gain confidence. There is no doubt. He has gone over 2.30 regularly now.

:55:40. > :55:45.That is great to see. He started off the year that way and he has

:55:45. > :55:52.continued going. It is brilliant to say. He has an outside chance for a

:55:52. > :55:58.big Olympic medal. That is it from the first by annual European

:55:59. > :56:03.athletics Championships. The next athletics is in a couple of weeks

:56:03. > :56:09.with the Diamond League. That is on Friday 13th July. It is on the

:56:09. > :56:15.Saturday as well. Before that, Mo, we have got more Diamond League

:56:15. > :56:21.athletics from Paris on the red button, Friday at 7pm. Tonight...

:56:22. > :56:29.Need I tell you, it is the European Championship finals. Spain versus

:56:29. > :56:34.Italy. So it has been quite a weekend. Tomorrow, the athletics

:56:34. > :56:37.selectors make the tea and make the announcement on Tuesday and for

:56:37. > :56:45.British athletes, then they can focus on London 2012 and it us

:56:45. > :56:50.their chance to write their names in the history books as Olympic

:56:50. > :56:58.champions. He takes the gold for Britain. Ken Matthews takes the

:56:58. > :57:06.gold. Lynne Daveies produces the finest leap of his life. Packer

:57:06. > :57:16.will take the gold. A fantastic run. A new world record and the Olympic

:57:19. > :57:29.title for Mary Wren. David Hemery win for Britain. Mary Peters has

:57:29. > :57:29.

:57:29. > :57:39.the gold medal. He takes the gold medal. Steve Ovett taking the gold

:57:39. > :57:49.

:57:49. > :57:59.medal for Britain. I Daley Thompson, the Olympic champion. The greatest
