:00:55. > :01:01.have had. The World Cup, Wimbledon, the open. And Scotland hosted a

:01:02. > :01:15.magnificent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It is a coming of age for

:01:16. > :01:26.the 20-year-old. Early Child of Scotland takes a silver. Look at

:01:27. > :01:35.that. Well done, Greg. Here comes Lynsey Sharp of Scotland, silver for

:01:36. > :01:47.Scotland. Look at Jo Pavey. With the Hampden Park for still in the mind,

:01:48. > :01:51.the sport goes on. -- roar. The city of student lies on the shores of a

:01:52. > :01:56.beautiful lake. Rich in tradition with culture and renowned for its

:01:57. > :02:11.world-class athletics. -- city of Z?rich. The world record has gone

:02:12. > :02:14.once again. Can this records have been broken and it welcomes Europe's

:02:15. > :02:20.best hoping to write their names into championship history. --

:02:21. > :02:25.countless records have been broken. Absolutely brilliant. A new

:02:26. > :02:38.generation of talent searches for success on the track. Global stars

:02:39. > :02:44.will be back in action. He is running for greatness. The stage is

:02:45. > :02:53.set for an action packed six days here in Z?rich. It is the largest

:02:54. > :02:59.city in Switzerland with a population of around 400,000. It is

:03:00. > :03:05.the gateway to some fabulous Alpine resorts. It may be synonymous with

:03:06. > :03:14.finance and learning, 60,000 students here, and it has diverse

:03:15. > :03:21.architecture. The crowds come here in August and are very knowledgeable

:03:22. > :03:25.when it comes to athletics. It is a beautiful stadium. Inside it are

:03:26. > :03:33.three very interested observers in Colin Jackson, Paula Radcliffe and

:03:34. > :03:41.Denise Lewis. Ten days after a major championship, for the Brits, the

:03:42. > :03:47.rest of the field have not had a Commonwealth Games and it is unique.

:03:48. > :03:53.It is a very unique situation. The team members understand what is

:03:54. > :03:56.needed from them. They carry on into the Europeans from the com of games.

:03:57. > :04:07.Sometimes it is the other way around. They will embrace it. -- the

:04:08. > :04:11.Commonwealth Games. The different events need different preparation

:04:12. > :04:19.and that will be crucial. For sprinters, and the jumps, ideas, it

:04:20. > :04:24.is easier to come off a 10-day competition. Take a break and have a

:04:25. > :04:30.size. For the events it is very different. Paula Radcliffe has done.

:04:31. > :04:39.How do you manage those days in between? It is about recovery. I run

:04:40. > :04:42.the 5000 metres in one and then the 10,000 metres in the European

:04:43. > :04:45.Championships, it is similar to trying to do the double in one

:04:46. > :04:52.championships. It was quite manageable. Between the two it is

:04:53. > :04:57.recovery and easy runs to keep the leg turnover going. Katarina

:04:58. > :05:04.Johnson-Thompson is not yet in any shape or form. Ashley Bryant is back

:05:05. > :05:09.here in the decathlon. It has already started. He did a decathlon

:05:10. > :05:15.ten days ago and it is huge. It is very tough. Physically, mentally, it

:05:16. > :05:22.is exhausting. He has probably done next to nothing after his exploits

:05:23. > :05:26.in Glasgow. It is probably rest and some speed work. Recuperation and

:05:27. > :05:41.getting those massages that Pollock intimated. -- Paula. We have got

:05:42. > :05:47.some friends in the studio. This is the mascot. The official mascot of

:05:48. > :05:51.the championships. He came out for a player this morning and to introduce

:05:52. > :06:08.himself to the crowd. He is energetic and not shy. He did some

:06:09. > :06:15.peddling earlier. -- hurdling. Every time we have a British medal winner

:06:16. > :06:20.we will put their face on the mascot with the corresponding colour. We

:06:21. > :06:26.have got a giant cowbell. An assistant will bring it on. I might

:06:27. > :06:39.ring it or I might ask you, and to ring my bell. Any time. We have to

:06:40. > :06:43.be careful not to do just about race is about to start or it will be a

:06:44. > :06:51.false start. That would be a disaster. There are plenty of stars

:06:52. > :06:52.to come this week. Christine Ohuruogu is the world champion

:06:53. > :07:04.again. Adam Gemili has got the silver medal

:07:05. > :07:21.and look how much that means to him. Early child of Scotland takes the

:07:22. > :08:04.silver. -- early child. Old stars and new stars. They didn't

:08:05. > :08:11.come much bigger than Mo Farah. It has not been plain sailing for him

:08:12. > :08:18.so far this year. I had a tooth taken out. The tooth was chipped. It

:08:19. > :08:23.became infected and I went for a run. I felt some pain. Came back

:08:24. > :08:30.from my run and I collapsed in the bathroom. I was completely knocked

:08:31. > :08:35.out. I was in so much pain. I had to be airlifted to the actual main

:08:36. > :08:43.hospital. They fought it was something going on with my heart. It

:08:44. > :08:54.was crazy. I was in hospital for four days. It was scary. I missed

:08:55. > :09:01.quite a lot of running. I would love to have come back and continued the

:09:02. > :09:06.road to the Commonwealth Games. I did not want to disappoint my

:09:07. > :09:10.supporters. I was not ready. I was nowhere near ready. I did one track

:09:11. > :09:19.session. Paula Radcliffe was there at the time. She asked if I was all

:09:20. > :09:26.right. For someone like Paula Radcliffe to see something like

:09:27. > :09:45.that. She saw that I was not right. It took a lot out of me. If I'm

:09:46. > :09:50.going to come up I have to be 100%. He has obviously been struggling.

:09:51. > :09:54.You want to see the best from them. You can see from that that he has

:09:55. > :09:59.mentally been struggling. When I saw the headline on the article, I

:10:00. > :10:05.thought that if he does not read the article then he would be hot by

:10:06. > :10:10.that. -- would be hurt by that. I have always been a big supporter of

:10:11. > :10:15.home and always will be. To think like I would say something like

:10:16. > :10:20.that, essentially what I said, I felt that he had some difficult

:10:21. > :10:27.times. He was coming right and he had time to do that. Maybe he could

:10:28. > :10:30.have got to the 10,000 metres. Yes, it is an easier race but I did not

:10:31. > :10:39.say he should have taken the easier option. He had more time to prepare

:10:40. > :10:44.and to get ready. Let us bring in Steve Cram. The field is not as

:10:45. > :10:49.strong in the Commonwealth Games for his discipline. People are wondering

:10:50. > :10:59.because he has not been himself, just how much physically the impact

:11:00. > :11:04.of that marathon was? His coaches would be best to answer that

:11:05. > :11:08.question. It affected how he was planning all of this year and next

:11:09. > :11:13.year going towards 2016. It was an attempt to look towards if you

:11:14. > :11:20.should run the marathon in Rio de Janeiro. Inevitably, that changes as

:11:21. > :11:25.Paula Radcliffe will know. If you move to the marathon, it does change

:11:26. > :11:31.things slightly. It doesn't mean that you can come down and compete

:11:32. > :11:35.in the Commonwealth Games at 5000 metres or 10,000 metres. It can

:11:36. > :11:39.enhance your preparations and make you stronger. Give you more

:11:40. > :11:46.endurance. It did not work out for him. There was the chance to step

:11:47. > :11:51.back and assess where he wants to go before Rio de Janeiro. The

:11:52. > :11:57.Commonwealth Games and Europeans were in front of them. Everything

:11:58. > :12:02.being well he would have done both. It was not 100% certain. He had to

:12:03. > :12:07.make choices, he is a brand now. He is being asked to go all over the

:12:08. > :12:12.world to run and events. He has a commercial life as well as an

:12:13. > :12:16.athletics life. He has been managed that. He needs to make good

:12:17. > :12:21.decisions for his future. Thank you very much. We will talk to the rest

:12:22. > :12:26.of the team later on initial. We will also hear more of that

:12:27. > :12:30.interview. You will see Mo Farah tomorrow night for the 10,000 metres

:12:31. > :12:40.final. A first athletics this evening is the women's 400 metres.

:12:41. > :12:46.There will be a lot of chat when he comes to the Stadium tomorrow night.

:12:47. > :13:11.Lots before that. The first three Andy four fastest

:13:12. > :13:21.losers will go through to the semifinals tomorrow. We were

:13:22. > :13:25.expecting big crowds here and the organisers have said that the ticket

:13:26. > :13:40.sales have gone well. Let us hope they are on their way. We are about

:13:41. > :13:45.at best 40% full. Tatyana Veshkurova will be an interesting athlete to

:13:46. > :13:55.watch. She is still switching between the hurdles and the flat

:13:56. > :14:04.event. She did run 49.19 back in 2006. Watch out for Milliyet deal

:14:05. > :14:16.from France. It has been a difficult year for women's 400 metres running.

:14:17. > :14:41.-- Maria Gayot. Christine Ohuruogu is here to

:14:42. > :14:49.contest this event individually. Terrero of Spain should go well. She

:14:50. > :15:04.has started pretty quickly in the outside. I have two say that Gayot

:15:05. > :15:11.and Bazzoni have a little bit of work to do. Looking as though this

:15:12. > :15:16.is a bit of a struggle. Now she is starting to fight. The first three,

:15:17. > :15:32.remember. Terrero starts to come through. The Russian veg, starting

:15:33. > :15:38.to come through. If you find yourself out in Lane 8 and not run a

:15:39. > :15:41.good race, as she didn't, all of a sudden she is going to have to see

:15:42. > :15:47.what happens in the heats to see if she is the fastest loser.

:15:48. > :15:52.Interesting to see what the Russians do because often they only run in

:15:53. > :16:02.the local championships. You can see how difficult it was for her. She is

:16:03. > :16:04.not going to be contending. That was far from her very best.

:16:05. > :16:25.Disappointing for her. That is the first heat. This is how

:16:26. > :16:34.the rest of the evening pans out. We will see Christine Ohuruogu later.

:16:35. > :16:42.It is the men's 800 metres heats as well. Andrew Osagie hoping to avenge

:16:43. > :16:52.his defeat in Glasgow. We have the men's to capital on 400 metres

:16:53. > :16:57.event. Ashley Bryant trying to recreate his Glasgow form. Jo Pavey

:16:58. > :17:01.and Beth Potter running in the women's 10,000 metres final. Tiffany

:17:02. > :17:07.Porter run very well in the heats this morning and goes in the

:17:08. > :17:11.semifinal later on. There is Christine Ohuruogu. It has been

:17:12. > :17:17.something of an off year for her. This is her first big championship

:17:18. > :17:22.of the season. She did not perform in the individual event in the

:17:23. > :17:30.Commonwealth Games. My plan coming into the season was to make sure

:17:31. > :17:34.that I have some relatively good performances for overseas, the

:17:35. > :17:38.Europeans will give me a chance to step of my performance. Otherwise,

:17:39. > :17:44.it will not help me in my progression for the 400. It is me

:17:45. > :17:56.being committed to my plan from the outset. She is just as usual, timing

:17:57. > :18:02.things to perfection. She knew what the plan for the season was. Is it

:18:03. > :18:11.too much to a skirt to get onto the rostrum after a quiet season? -- to

:18:12. > :18:17.ask her. Knowing Christine, she would not be here unless she thought

:18:18. > :18:21.she had a realistic shot. Trying to control her training the way she

:18:22. > :18:27.wanted to prepare. No expectation early doors. Keeping the body

:18:28. > :18:31.ticking over nicely, preparing for the next two years. The World

:18:32. > :18:38.Championships and the Olympics in Rio. I think she will come out and

:18:39. > :18:41.run well and she will not be disheartened whether the performance

:18:42. > :18:48.is really bad, she will get information about whether she can

:18:49. > :18:52.prepare like this for a season. She is a competitor, a champion. When

:18:53. > :18:58.she gets on the line, everything else will go into the background and

:18:59. > :19:06.we will see her competing very well. This list of athletes, they haven't

:19:07. > :19:11.done anything particularly special. It would be something if she did

:19:12. > :19:15.produce. To come to a European Championships in your off year and

:19:16. > :19:21.get a medal is the mark of a true champion. As we know she is. Andrew

:19:22. > :19:35.Cotter is your commentator. We are just about ready for this

:19:36. > :19:43.one. Just to tidy up the heat that has just finished. The Russian is

:19:44. > :20:02.going to have two cross her fingers for a fastest loser spot. That is

:20:03. > :20:22.whiskey which, the European Julian champion last year. First sign of

:20:23. > :20:59.Christine Ohuruogu in a European Championships. To tell over of the

:21:00. > :21:06.Slovakian Republic in Lane eight. Three go through plus the four

:21:07. > :21:08.fastest losers over four heats. Perfect conditions. It is very

:21:09. > :21:34.still. Everybody who follows athletics

:21:35. > :21:43.knows how Christine Ohuruogu likes to run. She likes to save something

:21:44. > :21:52.for the final 100. Grenot is already leaving her. But not losing too much

:21:53. > :22:08.distance. Zadorina, the Russia athlete is next to whiskey.

:22:09. > :22:15.At the moment, Christine Ohuruogu looking very comfortable at the

:22:16. > :22:22.moment. This is impressive from Christine Ohuruogu. A seasoned's

:22:23. > :22:28.best for her. She is perhaps finding her running at the right time,

:22:29. > :22:35.coming into the championships. Grenot had something left, I'm sure

:22:36. > :22:40.but that was impressive. Here is one thing, if she comes to run an

:22:41. > :22:45.individual event, watch out. She wouldn't do it if she didn't think

:22:46. > :22:49.she couldn't win. She doesn't like not winning in these sort of

:22:50. > :22:56.scenarios. That proves to me that she is ready for this. Grenot goes

:22:57. > :23:00.out reasonably quickly but Christine is in the race early. That is the

:23:01. > :23:05.French woman down the back straight giving something for Christine to

:23:06. > :23:14.work. The Russian is the one who could have been a big danger. The

:23:15. > :23:19.second athlete in. Zadorina doesn't move on after the first 300.

:23:20. > :23:24.Christine gets herself into a position at the top of the home

:23:25. > :23:29.straight. Grenot has a look across and sees it is the former Olympic

:23:30. > :23:33.champion and world champion and there is only one thing going to

:23:34. > :23:38.happen after that. Christine takes control of the race. She has half an

:23:39. > :23:44.eye on the clock and that will give her a huge amount of confidence. One

:23:45. > :23:49.thing we know, she will get better. Suddenly the list of quickest times

:23:50. > :23:54.in Europe this season mean nothing. With that time, she moves up to

:23:55. > :23:59.fourth in the list and suddenly she is a real threat for a medal. We

:24:00. > :24:03.talked about her getting on the podium while having a fallow year

:24:04. > :24:09.looking to the Olympics next year. She is still a big threat. There is

:24:10. > :24:39.confirmation of that time. We said that we would not know until

:24:40. > :24:43.we see her on the track and out of the blacks whether she is ready for

:24:44. > :24:49.this and we now know that she is more than ready. She always goes out

:24:50. > :24:54.for the first 200 metres steady and in control and she knows exactly

:24:55. > :24:59.where she is and what she has to do. It is something that she works on

:25:00. > :25:05.week in, week out. Her coach understands her character so well.

:25:06. > :25:11.She is a chaser who likes to hunt people down. Grenot is also very

:25:12. > :25:18.relaxed. We thought she would be a threat but from what I can see here,

:25:19. > :25:23.not at all. Christine is in control, working relatively within

:25:24. > :25:29.herself and she looks good. The perfect race for her to ease into

:25:30. > :25:32.the championship. It is a lovely race from Christine. She takes

:25:33. > :25:38.control of it and there is nothing that her rivals can do. They cannot

:25:39. > :25:43.get on her shoulder. You do put out a marker. If somebody comes up to

:25:44. > :25:48.your shoulder, you ease and feel what there is in the tank. The

:25:49. > :25:52.Italian didn't demonstrate that. That is the reason I think Christine

:25:53. > :25:58.is looking very strong and will be very comfortable. A lot of the field

:25:59. > :26:06.will not have seen very much of her. She had disappointing races but she

:26:07. > :26:11.said, don't worry, don't be stressed, I'm not. She never seems

:26:12. > :26:17.to be stressed. What do we think? She thought she was ready to

:26:18. > :26:21.perform. They know what a championship performer Christine is.

:26:22. > :26:25.When they see her in the individual event, as Steve said, she is not

:26:26. > :26:31.going to come unless she believes she has a chance. Let's see what the

:26:32. > :26:40.opposition have got. We are ready for the third heat of this women's

:26:41. > :26:49.400 metres. Let's just tidy up the result of Christine's heat first.

:26:50. > :26:56.Let's not. Let's do the start of the next heat. I think the Lithuanian

:26:57. > :27:14.has a good chance here. This young lady is based in

:27:15. > :27:18.Switzerland. On a new personal best this year and is improving all the

:27:19. > :27:25.time. She has got good 100 metres speed and is just the sort of

:27:26. > :27:31.athletes who would not threaten Christine O Taradrewe. We are always

:27:32. > :28:03.looking for new names to establish themselves at these championships.

:28:04. > :28:09.Obvious on the inside, Floria Guei, the same time this year as the

:28:10. > :28:39.Lithuanian. She was fourth in the race that Terrero was in in Madrid.

:28:40. > :28:45.This is no outstanding favourite in this event overall. Christine

:28:46. > :28:46.Ohuruogupos-mac stature is something that will always cast a shadow over

:28:47. > :29:02.the field. The first three and anything around

:29:03. > :29:27.the low 52 as will give you a chance of being fastest loser. Agne

:29:28. > :29:36.Serksniene is looking very relaxed. Adding the elite -- Adelina Pastor

:29:37. > :29:48.is making up the ground. Floria Guei is coming into it. It is the top

:29:49. > :30:07.three. Do not forget. It'll be close. The Lithuanian may just have

:30:08. > :30:13.got it. It is hard in lane one. Floria Guei did not get into it in

:30:14. > :30:29.the first 200. Look at the distance there. She held on so well and

:30:30. > :30:39.Floria Guei left herself with too much to do. The Lithuanian athlete

:30:40. > :30:43.was just able to hold on. Floria Guei was finishing strongly and it

:30:44. > :30:59.was very close on the finish. No doubt about the winner. It means

:31:00. > :31:07.that 52.424 Floria Guei means she is out. She was one of the fastest

:31:08. > :31:14.athletes coming into this. Men's discus qualification under way.

:31:15. > :31:18.Robert Harting, the undisputed master of this discipline. Three

:31:19. > :31:24.times world champion. Looking to defend. He will need a floor above

:31:25. > :31:28.64 metres. That is how you do it. The yellow line is automatic

:31:29. > :31:35.qualification. He made that look very easy. He moves around the

:31:36. > :31:50.length -- left side. Perfect balance. Drops his help. Doesn't

:31:51. > :31:55.that look comfortable? -- his hip. Some of the best athletes in the

:31:56. > :31:58.world are here, such as Europe dominates this event. Here is

:31:59. > :32:10.another man who has been world leader. Gerd Kanter, 35 years of

:32:11. > :32:15.age. He was much more aggressive. That is comfortably over

:32:16. > :32:21.qualification. The Estonian was Olympic champion in 2008. He looked

:32:22. > :32:29.slightly more anxious. Didn't Robert Harting look impressive? He is third

:32:30. > :32:46.in the all-time list. The Estonian is in the final. Confirmation,

:32:47. > :32:50.65.79. I was just getting ahead of myself, apologies to Floria Guei,

:32:51. > :32:52.she still has a chance of going through. She is third fastest at the

:32:53. > :33:09.moment. Nothing too much to worry Christine

:33:10. > :33:14.Ohuruogu in that heat. We have got some interesting shots of James

:33:15. > :33:19.Dasaolu warming up. The reason that they are interesting, the next event

:33:20. > :33:27.on track is the men's 100 metres, this warm up track is 15 minutes

:33:28. > :33:34.away by public transport. You have to get a bus over here. And if you

:33:35. > :33:40.are running two back-to-back, you have to get over here, go back and

:33:41. > :33:45.warm up, then come over here again. Decisions will have to be made by

:33:46. > :33:47.athletes if they do go back ? the around the stadium to help them with

:33:48. > :34:08.energy factors. You are talking about the quality.

:34:09. > :34:12.Quite -- quite a lot of people who came in ahead of Christine Ohuruogu

:34:13. > :34:17.have been disappointing. Diamond could've been selected and on the

:34:18. > :34:22.basis of this she could've made the final. She did not get selected.

:34:23. > :34:35.This is the woman to look at in this event. Olha Zemlyak from Ukraine.

:34:36. > :34:48.She has the second quickest time in Europe.

:34:49. > :34:55.She had a troubled start to her career. She failed a drugs test at

:34:56. > :35:03.19 at the 2009 European Junior Championships. Two year ban. Back to

:35:04. > :35:06.running and back running well. Esther Cremer goes in lane two. The

:35:07. > :35:29.German champion. Three go through automatically from

:35:30. > :35:44.the spinal heat of the women's 400 metres. -- the final heat. Very

:35:45. > :35:58.interesting to see how Olha Zemlyak in lane five goes on. She has gone

:35:59. > :36:09.out very strongly. Esther Cremer in lane two has started strongly as

:36:10. > :36:22.well. The Spanish athlete in lane six hopes she has something left.

:36:23. > :36:31.Three go through automatically. Maria Enrica Spacca of Italy looks

:36:32. > :36:42.like she is out of it. The winner of that one is Olha Zemlyak at a time

:36:43. > :36:45.of 51.16. She is the first person to have impressed other than Christine

:36:46. > :36:48.Ohuruogu. She looks like she is worth her billing as one of the

:36:49. > :36:54.favourites. I would certainly agree with that. Esther Cremer is a good

:36:55. > :37:05.200 metres runner and she went out hard. Then she faded. The Spanish

:37:06. > :37:14.athlete could go -- could not get anywhere near Olha Zemlyak. She is

:37:15. > :37:17.the only athlete who has impressed. This is the official result and the

:37:18. > :37:20.Ukrainian is a long way ahead of everybody else. She looks a threat

:37:21. > :37:33.to the hopes of Christine Ohuruogu. I have not seen that before where

:37:34. > :37:36.she beat yourself up. I have not seen female athletes to that. I have

:37:37. > :37:43.seen the male swimmers do that before. Has that ever worked for

:37:44. > :37:49.you, Colin? Now I would not take to beating myself up. You would not

:37:50. > :37:56.want to hit that beautiful face. It is all about individual preparation.

:37:57. > :38:10.Some of the athletes on the Eastern bloc would try to invigorate

:38:11. > :38:13.themselves by hitting themselves. Horses for courses, everybody has a

:38:14. > :38:18.different way of motivating themselves but you do not recommend

:38:19. > :38:28.it for a morning run? Note to the men's 100 metres. We saw Jason

:38:29. > :38:39.Dasaolu warming up. He is one of three British people going in those

:38:40. > :38:42.seats. -- heats. Dwain Chambers is making his fifth appearance in

:38:43. > :38:52.European Championships. He is elder statesman. This is what I am born to

:38:53. > :39:03.do. Every time you step on that line you are running for your life. I

:39:04. > :39:06.want to start with the fantastic performance at the trials. The is

:39:07. > :39:10.the isolated shot of you running down a lane and it was incredible.

:39:11. > :39:20.The determination, drive and passion. I still have not seen the

:39:21. > :39:24.race. That head-on view that you are talking about is not something I

:39:25. > :39:28.have had a chance to reflect on. I had to put everything on the line.

:39:29. > :39:32.We had some youngsters coming up and I did not want to lose it. It is a

:39:33. > :39:40.blessing and the costs with the younger person apples. -- with the

:39:41. > :39:46.younger athletes. You cannot rest on your laurels. Not at all. The

:39:47. > :39:51.fantastic aspect is that the sport is flourishing with talent. There

:39:52. > :39:56.are so many athletes who can run fast and the sport has been missing

:39:57. > :40:00.that. I looked down the list and realise they will pass me one day.

:40:01. > :40:08.But not right now. It keeps me motivated. I know that I'm not going

:40:09. > :40:11.to be able to do this forever. I have learned to take things with

:40:12. > :40:20.open arms and embrace it. I did not do that when I younger. Now, I am

:40:21. > :40:23.nearing the end and matters more. I like hearing the announcement on the

:40:24. > :40:31.start line. I like to hear the crowd. That feeling that you get,

:40:32. > :40:36.you cannot buy that. I want to hold onto that as long as possible.

:40:37. > :40:41.Britain has got a treat -- great tradition in the sprints in this

:40:42. > :40:46.championship. It was where you came to prominence 16 years ago with a

:40:47. > :40:52.medal. It is a premier event for us as British sprinters. It is a title

:40:53. > :40:57.that they carry with a great amount of pride. It is a lot of secret

:40:58. > :41:05.rivalry between us and the French. As much as we have the depth of

:41:06. > :41:12.talent in Britain we still have to go against Jimmy Vicaut and

:41:13. > :41:17.Christophe Lemaitre. If I get a victory in if I get sub ten seconds

:41:18. > :41:23.then it is Christmas and the lottery all coming and one. He comes up in

:41:24. > :41:29.heat two. He mention that man, Christophe Lemaitre, he is the

:41:30. > :41:34.defending champion. He is going nowhere in lane three. -- she is

:41:35. > :41:52.going at the moment. The German Gillian Rice is the

:41:53. > :42:03.German Gillian Rice is beside German record. This man, all the German

:42:04. > :42:08.nation think they have found an athlete to go under ten seconds.

:42:09. > :42:12.This track is fast. We saw some good times this morning. Christophe

:42:13. > :42:20.Lemaitre has been producing at the right time. 200 metres is

:42:21. > :42:27.undoubtedly his best event but he said he wants to win the 100 metres

:42:28. > :42:28.again like he did in 2010. Qualifying is easy. It is the first

:42:29. > :42:47.four. Dwain Chambers goes in heat two.

:42:48. > :43:01.James Dasaolu in the three and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey in heat five.

:43:02. > :43:15.Julian Reus. I have just spoken about him. Mikhail Idrisov of

:43:16. > :43:47.Russia. And Eetu Rantala of Finland. in the heats. As the guys were

:43:48. > :43:52.saying, you do not have to go back to the warm up track. There are

:43:53. > :44:07.facilities here. But the main warm up is downtown. Julian Reus and

:44:08. > :44:15.Christophe Lemaitre. 100th of a second separates them this year.

:44:16. > :44:25.What am I saying? 10.054 Julian Reus. That is about 15 yards. Not

:44:26. > :44:38.much to choose. They don't need it here. Just the top four go through.

:44:39. > :44:42.Julian Reus gets a cracking start with Christophe Lemaitre alongside

:44:43. > :44:48.him. Look at Lemaitre coming through, great running from him. You

:44:49. > :44:53.have to see that Julian Reus was is appointing in third place behind the

:44:54. > :44:59.Russian. If that was the appetiser, he just wolfed it down and Julian

:45:00. > :45:04.Reus was left with the titbits. That was not very good from the German,

:45:05. > :45:09.given the form that he brought to these championships. Can he get

:45:10. > :45:15.amongst it? On that evidence, not really. He reacted well to the

:45:16. > :45:24.blocks but he was just a little flat. At no stage was he nice and

:45:25. > :45:29.high. In comparison, Lemaitre striding out, looking strong and

:45:30. > :45:38.confident. What a nice way for him to finish. Looking very easy indeed.

:45:39. > :45:42.Does he stumble out of the blocks? He did a slight twitch before the

:45:43. > :45:50.gun went. Then he went again. In his mind, it could have put him off. He

:45:51. > :45:55.is still running a little bit flat. At the German championships he

:45:56. > :45:59.looked a lot more bouncy. Let's just get the first round out of the way.

:46:00. > :46:09.Let's see what happens in the next round which will be far more

:46:10. > :46:14.crucial. Out of the blocks, you can see every one of these athletes is

:46:15. > :46:20.looking at Lemaitre. He is the marked man here. He is taking it out

:46:21. > :46:29.there and showing everybody that he has arrived in good shape and

:46:30. > :46:37.looking forward to the race. The four names at the top know that they

:46:38. > :46:44.are definitely through. Just wondering what happened to Idrisov.

:46:45. > :46:49.Why is he not on there? We will tidy that up later. These are the

:46:50. > :46:58.qualifiers for the women's 400 metres. Christine Ohuruogu out there

:46:59. > :47:09.in front. Some favoured lanes have disappointed, Grenot may be one of

:47:10. > :47:17.those. A few names were missing. Waiting for the next race.

:47:18. > :47:31.James Dasaolu they're getting ready for his heat number three. He has

:47:32. > :47:39.only run 10.03 this year and he is a 9.91 runner. Dwain Chambers features

:47:40. > :47:45.in the next heat. You just get the feeling that he is savouring every

:47:46. > :47:51.race because the end is coming. That is the reality. One thing I can say

:47:52. > :47:56.about him, he has had his problems in the past. Since he has come

:47:57. > :48:03.back, he has tried to do everything that he can to save his athletics

:48:04. > :48:08.and rise to the occasion. In the trials, he was fantastic, the way he

:48:09. > :48:16.stamped his authority on that. He knows that this could be the last

:48:17. > :48:22.Europeans for him. The talent coming through should be pushing him out of

:48:23. > :48:29.the places. He will know that. He knows that the young men are going

:48:30. > :48:34.to turn into men and his time will become in to an end soon. Right now,

:48:35. > :48:37.he is getting ready to line up in the next heat. Andrew Cotter will

:48:38. > :48:54.call this one. COMMENTATOR: We saw that for

:48:55. > :48:59.whatever reason Julian Reus could not produce it in the last heat.

:49:00. > :49:05.Dwain Chambers is here because he produced his fastest time of the

:49:06. > :49:13.season. His big rival is not here because he could not reproduce his

:49:14. > :49:23.best form. Tromp of the Netherlands in Lane 2. Then Dwain Chambers. That

:49:24. > :49:35.is simply an oak of Romania in Lane 5. --

:49:36. > :49:44.another big German talent. The fourth quickest in Europe this year.

:49:45. > :49:51.Rose is going for Sweden in Lane 8. Jamaican born but moved to Sweden at

:49:52. > :49:56.a very young age. Dwain Chambers once again dragging his old bones to

:49:57. > :49:59.the start line of a 100 metres in a major championship. He does not tend

:50:00. > :50:19.to tighten up to much. For to go through automatically to

:50:20. > :50:35.tomorrow's semifinal. The good start and Chambers quickly

:50:36. > :50:43.into his running. Already coming away from the rest of the field. A

:50:44. > :50:49.good run from Chambers. 10.18 into a slight puff of wind. Chambers does

:50:50. > :50:58.the necessary. Ran impressively, safely through, move on. Of all the

:50:59. > :51:02.athletes lining up, he has the most experience and knows how to get

:51:03. > :51:09.through the rounds saving his best for when it really matters. A very

:51:10. > :51:13.nice time. A very competent performance by Dwain Chambers. Out

:51:14. > :51:18.of the blocks very well in the centre of the picture. Hecht down,

:51:19. > :51:26.driving hard. When he gets into the upright run, he stays as relaxed as

:51:27. > :51:33.possible, right now he wants to maintain his speed. Just hold it. At

:51:34. > :51:41.this stage, he can afford to relax. Very nice sprinting by Dwain

:51:42. > :51:46.Chambers. Head down for the first 30 metres. Now bouncing down the

:51:47. > :51:52.track. All about maintaining form. He is relaxed already knowing he has

:51:53. > :51:59.the victory. A very familiar sight. A very powerful figure, 36 years of

:52:00. > :52:05.age. Head down and driving. By this stage, he is already bossing the

:52:06. > :52:09.race. The key thing is to get in front and let everybody be tight

:52:10. > :52:13.behind him. Then he can afford to relax. He might tighten up a little

:52:14. > :52:33.bit but he controlled it here. Dwain Chambers is through to the

:52:34. > :52:37.semifinals. That will be tomorrow night, the final couple of hours

:52:38. > :52:58.after that. Just confirming the result for you.

:52:59. > :53:07.We saw in the British Championships that his experience comes through

:53:08. > :53:11.time and again. It comes through in major championships. It is an art to

:53:12. > :53:17.come through the rounds. He is there, he has done it. He looked

:53:18. > :53:21.good. What you are looking for in the sprint is the effortless

:53:22. > :53:26.transition from drive out to extension that you see here. He

:53:27. > :53:32.makes it look very easy. He is strong, we know he is powerful and

:53:33. > :53:38.he is always consistent. That is what we love about him. He can

:53:39. > :53:43.navigate the rounds. He is able to go back and get back into his own

:53:44. > :53:48.mind about what he wants to get out of the championship. What the next

:53:49. > :53:54.round looks like, what his competitors are, what are their

:53:55. > :54:03.strengths and weaknesses. The old guard of British sprinting. In the

:54:04. > :54:08.next heat, we see some of the new ones. James Dasaolu is not the

:54:09. > :54:16.youngest but because of injury he has not run as much. It feels like

:54:17. > :54:21.he is just getting started. It is his first European Championship and

:54:22. > :54:26.he wants to come in and make a mark, navigating the rounds but making it

:54:27. > :54:31.count in the final as well. He is desperate to prove that he can get

:54:32. > :54:36.through the rounds. He was devastated not to recreate his form

:54:37. > :54:42.last year at the World Championships. The accusation that

:54:43. > :54:49.has dogged him is that he needs to build up his performances rather

:54:50. > :54:53.than just have one of brilliance. The hamstring that dogged him in the

:54:54. > :55:01.indoors and prevented him from having the season we expected, it

:55:02. > :55:05.could pay in his favour. He has not done Commonwealth Games. He has

:55:06. > :55:08.focused on these championships and I really think that he will get it

:55:09. > :55:16.together here. He needs medals around his neck, consistency. It all

:55:17. > :55:22.starts here. We will hear from Dwain Chambers soon. He has been doing

:55:23. > :55:26.German media first. I didn't know that he was bilingual. Over to the

:55:27. > :55:32.next heat with the Steve Cram calling it.

:55:33. > :55:53.COMMENTATOR: One or two rivals for James Dasaolu of Croydon Harriers

:55:54. > :55:59.here. Just picking up the point about health and getting ready and

:56:00. > :56:10.preparing. Dasaolu went to the Dutch Championships recently. He ran two

:56:11. > :56:15.races and came through it very well. Kling-Baptiste of Sweden. Martina

:56:16. > :56:21.was the person that Dasaolu beat by 100 of a second in Amsterdam. We

:56:22. > :56:28.will be there for the next Championships in 2016. Dimitrov of

:56:29. > :56:39.Bulger area, the youngster, 20 years of age. He took the silver in the

:56:40. > :56:50.Junior Championships last year. -- of Bulgaria. We already seen Dwain

:56:51. > :56:54.Chambers and Christophe Lemaitre performing impressively. What will

:56:55. > :57:00.James Dasaolu do? You won't see him very well in Lane 7. These should do

:57:01. > :57:13.better than the rest. A first four are guaranteed through to

:57:14. > :57:19.tomorrow's semifinals. Dasaolu with a decent start. Martina left a

:57:20. > :57:29.little bit. Here comes Martina now. Look at Dasaolu. Easing off. 10.22.

:57:30. > :57:34.A very good 80 metres, turned it off a little bit. Didn't need to do

:57:35. > :57:50.anything else. Ni fouls, all of them, nowhere near him. He is never

:57:51. > :57:55.blistering out of the blocks but did what he needed to do. He did what

:57:56. > :57:59.was necessary for him to qualify. He came out of the blocks pretty

:58:00. > :58:09.average. A sensational start was not needed. What you can see, you may

:58:10. > :58:12.see it on the track. The gap he pulled on these runners without

:58:13. > :58:20.noticing. You can have a look on it here. Look at that, blink, he is two

:58:21. > :58:30.metres in front. Steady Eddie from then on in. He can just cruise. They

:58:31. > :58:36.all better watch out. Out of the blocks, as I said, nice and steady.

:58:37. > :58:41.Gets into the upright running. It looks as though he is glancing

:58:42. > :58:48.across already, thinking is anybody going to come? James, take the

:58:49. > :58:57.stroll, it will be tougher in the next round. 10.2 to in that way, a

:58:58. > :59:03.wonderful performance. Nice and comfortable as you said. He was

:59:04. > :59:25.looking for Martina but he was nowhere near him. Ni fouls and

:59:26. > :59:29.Dimitrov the other qualifiers there. This is a decent game. What was a

:59:30. > :59:36.track like? It is always nerve wracking. I thought to myself, just

:59:37. > :59:40.set yourself up and come away please. I have done that so I am

:59:41. > :59:45.pleased. You were in complete control. It is good to be in

:59:46. > :59:51.control. You do not want to leave each round with negative thoughts.

:59:52. > :59:54.The team captain, Goldie Sayers, said yesterday, how would you

:59:55. > :00:00.compete if you think this is your last race? That resonated with me. I

:00:01. > :00:14.will do it the way I want to do it, with a smile.

:00:15. > :00:24.James Dasaolu, well done. It was an accomplished performance from Dwain

:00:25. > :00:30.Chambers and the same from you. I try to get food using as little

:00:31. > :00:33.energy as possible with a semifinal and final tomorrow. It was easy

:00:34. > :00:42.enough and I am just happy to get through. As you get more experienced

:00:43. > :00:45.you get any less nervous? You always have that level of nervousness but

:00:46. > :00:52.not as high at the World Championships when you have got

:00:53. > :00:56.Jamaica and the USA. You have got double duty tomorrow hopefully. What

:00:57. > :01:01.are your thoughts on that? Anything can happen. I have to get through

:01:02. > :01:04.the semifinal into the final and push for a medal. Performing like

:01:05. > :01:09.that, I am sure he will do just that.

:01:10. > :01:18.James is in the same training group as Adam Gemili. He must have seen

:01:19. > :01:21.his training partner go out there, get the silver medal at the

:01:22. > :01:27.Commonwealth Games, and convert what he has been doing in training. That

:01:28. > :01:32.will really make him feel he has realised some of that potential. He

:01:33. > :01:39.had the slowest reaction time but what looked like the best start.

:01:40. > :01:47.That euphoria does ripple through the training groups. Success breeds

:01:48. > :01:52.success. They all want a bit of that. James has got every chance to

:01:53. > :01:59.do it at these championships. Christophe Lemaitre looks good.

:02:00. > :02:02.Jimmy Vicaut looks good. He has got a real opportunity. One of the few

:02:03. > :02:11.men that have gone under ten seconds.

:02:12. > :02:22.The man who should be favourite coming into these championships...

:02:23. > :02:26.It is interesting to hear the welcome from Pascal Mancini because

:02:27. > :02:32.he has came back from a drug ban. It cost Switzerland the national

:02:33. > :02:40.record. There is Jimmy Vicaut, is he fit? He has not raced -- since June

:02:41. > :02:47.21. He would be the man to beat. He has ran 9.95 this season. He has

:02:48. > :02:58.felt a twinge in his hamstring so he has shut down since then. That is

:02:59. > :03:26.Giovanni Codrington getting excited. The athlete from Torquay sprung out

:03:27. > :03:55.of his blocks. -- from Torquay. That was fairly emphatic. C what the

:03:56. > :04:00.decision is. UMPIRE: we have disqualified the athlete in lane

:04:01. > :04:07.six. You can wait to be all you want but you are out. -- you can wait

:04:08. > :04:23.their all you want. We have got time to go through the

:04:24. > :04:37.line-up. Jimmy Vicaut in lane two. Patrik Andersson in lane three.

:04:38. > :04:40.Davide Re Rodriguez from Spain. Pascal Mancini from Switzerland and

:04:41. > :04:57.Giovanni Codrington from the nether lands. -- from Holland.

:04:58. > :05:09.Jimmy Vicaut into his running. He looks powerful. He is well clear. He

:05:10. > :05:15.is easing down. 10.06. If his body is fit then he looks fit. He is

:05:16. > :05:21.running well. Christophe Lemaitre and Jimmy Vicaut looking very good

:05:22. > :05:26.indeed. Very sprightly. As soon as the gun was fired we could see that

:05:27. > :05:33.Jimmy Vicaut was in trip top shape. No hesitation. Compare to everybody

:05:34. > :05:38.else, he runs a very upright out of the blocks and he uses his leg

:05:39. > :05:49.cadence, more speed than power over the top -- first 20 metres. He has a

:05:50. > :05:53.really nice fluid movement. Sometimes he comes under pressure

:05:54. > :05:58.and he goes take in his shoulders. When he gets it right as he has

:05:59. > :06:05.demonstrated, he looks majestic. Easy, fluid, relaxed sprinting.

:06:06. > :06:14.France are certainly showing us that their athletes have arrived here and

:06:15. > :06:20.they mean business. Jimmy Vicaut is relaxed and flu -- full of running.

:06:21. > :06:26.He had a great battle at the indoor championship with James Dasaolu.

:06:27. > :06:35.Dwain Chambers is in there It is a close tussle behind for the minor

:06:36. > :06:43.places. We think we can tidy it up for you now. Jimmy Vicaut well clear

:06:44. > :06:56.and impressive. An impressive win and run by Jimmy

:06:57. > :07:01.Vicaut. Everything was working well. Any problems are cast to one side.

:07:02. > :07:07.There was no evidence of it. He looked very good. You talk about

:07:08. > :07:14.rivalries amongst training partners and team-mates etc. The rivalry

:07:15. > :07:18.between him and Christophe Lemaitre is very big. Who is the number-1 in

:07:19. > :07:27.your country. That is clearly evident. He has all the hallmarks of

:07:28. > :07:34.taking this 100-metre title. Effortless piece of sprinting. From

:07:35. > :07:40.what we have seen so far, clearly the quickest and the one to beat. It

:07:41. > :07:44.James Dasaolu have what it takes to push hard? We have seen them

:07:45. > :07:51.battling indoors. They have been head-to-head and both have went

:07:52. > :07:59.under 6.5 seconds, making it look simple. If James is ready it will be

:08:00. > :08:04.an interesting battle. Do not discount Christophe Lemaitre. We

:08:05. > :08:10.have got one more seat left ago. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey is busy

:08:11. > :08:22.taking his leggings. -- one more race left to go. He was disappointed

:08:23. > :08:27.with his individual performance. You can never really tell where the

:08:28. > :08:32.Marxism progress in his own development. He was disappointed in

:08:33. > :08:35.Glasgow. It is really good to have another championships coming up very

:08:36. > :08:39.soon when you are still in shape and you can go out to make amends. You

:08:40. > :08:47.can use some of that frustration to fuel it. He certainly enjoyed being

:08:48. > :08:49.part of that quartet in the forefront -- four x 100 metres

:08:50. > :09:02.relay. The most annoyed and frustrated I

:09:03. > :09:10.have seen them was when he ran 10.08. He felt that was his big

:09:11. > :09:18.chance that day. He missed his chance to go below ten seconds. He

:09:19. > :09:23.was frustrated. He felt he would get better and quicker this season but

:09:24. > :09:27.he has not done that. He has got a fairly easy ratio to contender. --

:09:28. > :09:51.fairly easy race. The one upper class athlete in this

:09:52. > :10:12.event is Jaysuma Saidy Ndure. Not many people match Harry for body

:10:13. > :10:21.beautiful. I think the athlete in lane six does. Reto Schenkel. That

:10:22. > :10:23.may be as good as I have ever seen Jimmy Vicaut, that was very good

:10:24. > :11:01.indeed. Safely away. Decent start from

:11:02. > :11:07.Harry. Harry needs to concentrate. He does it with a smile on his face.

:11:08. > :11:13.Sometimes he does want to look like he is enjoying it but he looked

:11:14. > :11:20.across in the middle of the race. I guess he knew he had plenty to

:11:21. > :11:28.spare. 10.19. He has got that consistency now, Colin. You do not

:11:29. > :11:34.get many bad runs from him. He has got the consistency around the 10.1

:11:35. > :11:39.mark and it is jumping out of that. That is what is frustrating for

:11:40. > :11:43.Harry. He is looking at everyone of his performances and wondering when

:11:44. > :11:50.that magic moment comes when he has that big drop, all of the sprinters

:11:51. > :11:54.seems to get it. He drove hard out of the blocks and took control of

:11:55. > :11:59.the race. He started to move away from the field. I did not like the

:12:00. > :12:04.fact that he turned his head to take a clients. I do not mind a slight

:12:05. > :12:10.move but when you told your entire head it can cause torsion at full

:12:11. > :12:17.speed and it can cause injury. He did what he did. I just wanted to

:12:18. > :12:25.say that it is a bigger body to create some torsion by just moving.

:12:26. > :12:34.These the glands. I am not very comfortable with that. -- the

:12:35. > :12:43.glance. Harry, well done. Safely through.

:12:44. > :12:53.You had a cheeky look to see where you were. Jason Mark seeking a daily

:12:54. > :13:00.is an off some athlete and I wanted to see really was. -- Jaysuma Saidy

:13:01. > :13:08.Ndure. I am feeling more like myself. I'm here today, faxed to the

:13:09. > :13:13.team that have got behind me. I'm able to come into these

:13:14. > :13:19.championships. Thank you to the national lottery. Everybody behind

:13:20. > :13:25.me has helped me get to the stage in one piece. I am looking to dash

:13:26. > :13:31.forward to tomorrow. It looks like a battle between France and Great

:13:32. > :13:46.Britain. You would think that. Hopefully we will stay on top but C

:13:47. > :13:53.what happens. Just going to tidy up the result of the last heat. This is

:13:54. > :13:59.the final list of qualifiers going through. We didn't have assembly act

:14:00. > :14:05.at the top even though she ran very strongly. These are all of the

:14:06. > :14:10.qualifiers who go through to the semifinals. Grenot not so

:14:11. > :14:17.impressive. qualifiers who go through to the

:14:18. > :14:24.semifinals. Grenot not so Floria Guei got through as one of the

:14:25. > :14:29.fastest losers. She did survive. The fourth heat was under a judges check

:14:30. > :14:31.for about ten minutes. It finally got the green light.

:14:32. > :14:40.for about ten minutes. It finally These are the men's qualifiers for

:14:41. > :14:52.the 100 metres. Jimmy vie coat was definitely the most impressive. ,

:14:53. > :15:00.most of the main contenders are through. The rest of them hoping

:15:01. > :15:12.they can have a brilliant semifinal. Semifinal and final tomorrow night.

:15:13. > :15:22.It looks like a great British -French battle, those semifinals and

:15:23. > :15:27.hopefully the finals. Interesting plants we saw from Harry. I don't

:15:28. > :15:32.think that was coached. Not sure what he thought he was going to

:15:33. > :15:42.achieve. He is not going to change his pace at that point. You do not

:15:43. > :15:47.coach that. Look down the track, concentrate on your lane. Peripheral

:15:48. > :15:54.vision usually gives you an idea where you are. Maybe he cannot see

:15:55. > :16:00.over his traps. I am glad he is through. The consistency he has

:16:01. > :16:07.shown this season, he deserved to get through. Who knows, if he

:16:08. > :16:14.doesn't turn his head he may dip under the magic ten. He couldn't see

:16:15. > :16:22.the athlete in Lane 8, so he just had a look. At least he didn't the

:16:23. > :16:28.out of his lane. Paula, always defending the athlete. Now we are

:16:29. > :16:36.switching our attention to the 800 metres heats. We are going to

:16:37. > :16:42.introduce you to one of our Euro stars, delivered in the style of

:16:43. > :17:02.Eurovision. We are going back to 1986 when Great Britain was dominant

:17:03. > :17:17.800 metres. COMMENTATOR: There goes Steve Cram on the outside. And

:17:18. > :17:27.Sebastian Kehl follows. -- Sebastian hole that

:17:28. > :17:44.Coe. That is the first time Britain have finished first, second and

:17:45. > :17:54.third in a European Championship. I was reminded briefly of Tom

:17:55. > :18:02.McKean's hairstyle. Did you have happy memories? I saw Tom last

:18:03. > :18:14.week, he was escorting the bat on all around in Glasgow last week.

:18:15. > :18:27.There is so Fiona Selmouni of France.

:18:28. > :18:39.Lewandowski. Real calibre this season. Rickard Gunnarsson of Sweden

:18:40. > :18:58.in Lane 7. A couple of athletes in Lane 8. We didn't see Thijmen Kupers

:18:59. > :19:12.of the Netherlands. He goes on the inside in Lane 1. There he is. The

:19:13. > :19:22.first of the first-round heats in the 800 metres. A couple of laps of

:19:23. > :19:30.the track. This one might be quite open. Yes, you have got to

:19:31. > :19:36.Lewandowski. The others are fairly evenly spread. A little bit of

:19:37. > :19:44.jostling already between Thijmen Kupers and the Belgian Van Den

:19:45. > :19:48.Broeck. That was interesting. Down the back straight, they were boxing

:19:49. > :20:03.for position. These athletes don't run against them very often

:20:04. > :20:08.competitive you. Artur Kuciapski of Poland in the white vest on the

:20:09. > :20:17.shoulder of the leader. Lewandowski looks to be in control. Behind him,

:20:18. > :20:21.Lopez is running well. Just sticking in there. This is going to be an

:20:22. > :20:27.interesting battle because they will go faster down the back straight.

:20:28. > :20:43.The first four confirmed but only into the semifinal. Selmouni of

:20:44. > :20:52.France has got into a good position. Lewandowski is in total control at

:20:53. > :20:56.the moment. He is staying clear. Selmouni with a look around on his

:20:57. > :21:01.shoulder should take third place automatically. Lopez, Lewandowski

:21:02. > :21:09.and Selmouni come through automatically. That is a classic

:21:10. > :21:14.example of what can happen in the 800 metres. Lots of jostling and

:21:15. > :21:21.bumping. Lewandowski was staying away from all that nonsense. If

:21:22. > :21:32.something goes wrong, you have very little chance of reacting. Look at

:21:33. > :21:36.them, always reacting on the track. That is dangerous, that is trouble.

:21:37. > :21:44.But the Frenchman decided it was his best route. Lopez coming quickly on

:21:45. > :21:50.the outside. Lewandowski competently in control. Looking good, actually.

:21:51. > :21:58.Glancing over the shoulder. Nothing for Lewandowski to do. Lopez has

:21:59. > :22:03.promised a lot. He is accelerating in the finishing straight. Selmouni

:22:04. > :22:07.just hanging on, battling through. But Lewandowski is the man to be

:22:08. > :22:13.beaten in this race. He is going to be difficult. He is looking good.

:22:14. > :22:25.Have a look at that on the back straight. I'd like to see where

:22:26. > :22:32.Selmouni is going. I don't know if there is somebody getting caught. It

:22:33. > :22:38.looks like he stepped off the track onto the inside, that sometimes

:22:39. > :22:49.happens. There could be an enquiry. He is going where there is no gap.

:22:50. > :22:52.For Lewandowski it wasn't a problem. Lopez was comfortable. Selmouni was

:22:53. > :23:03.the man hanging on and he caused the problem. We have got another camera

:23:04. > :23:10.on that incident. It was Lopez on the outside. Just watch defeat of

:23:11. > :23:17.Selmouni. Just caught the inside. I think he's going to be OK. It is

:23:18. > :23:22.just the timing of Lopez on the outside and Selmouni on the inside.

:23:23. > :23:38.The other man was the filling in the sandwich. Piotr Malachowski of

:23:39. > :23:45.Poland, one of the greatest thrillers of all time. We have seen

:23:46. > :23:50.to athletes already in qualifying. That is below qualifying, very

:23:51. > :23:56.surprisingly. The great man is looking a little lacklustre. Always

:23:57. > :24:04.very animated. Not today. That looked very high. He showed all the

:24:05. > :24:11.discus. It was never going to fly. It is going to put him inside the

:24:12. > :24:20.top 12. He had the benefit of seeing the previous pool. These athletes

:24:21. > :24:31.throwing in the second of two pools this afternoon. Jasinski is the

:24:32. > :24:45.third ranked German and that is big. Very strong in the throes, as ever.

:24:46. > :24:52.The third ranked German. 25-year-old looks like he has booked a place in

:24:53. > :24:59.the final. He has controlled that well. It is a good effort. First

:25:00. > :25:11.round, that is what you want to see. Confirmation of auto qualification.

:25:12. > :25:22.Andrew Osagie made the final in the Olympic Games. His disappointment in

:25:23. > :25:32.the Commonwealth Games must be fuelling his desire here. He had the

:25:33. > :25:41.unfortunate situation that he should not have been in. He was not in the

:25:42. > :25:45.shade that he wanted to go to the championships in. He needs a smooth

:25:46. > :25:57.run here to see him through to the next round. Andrew Osagie will be a

:25:58. > :26:01.bit nervous but he is ready to go. I spoke to his coach and he said that

:26:02. > :26:05.things had gone better since the Commonwealth Games and he was

:26:06. > :26:15.looking forward to racing here. Just to tidy up the result. Lewandowski

:26:16. > :26:30.going safely through. Lopez and Selmouni. Roald Hagbart Froskeland

:26:31. > :26:33.waiting to see if he goes through. Mark English the 21 new role

:26:34. > :26:49.Irishman is having a fantastic season. -- the 21-year-old. There he

:26:50. > :26:58.is. A medical student from the University College in Dublin. He had

:26:59. > :27:16.a fantastic run in New York behind David Rudy show. -- Rudisha.

:27:17. > :27:24.Andrew Osagie knows only too well after what happened to him in

:27:25. > :27:30.Glasgow, getting disqualified, he needs to concentrate and keep out of

:27:31. > :27:36.trouble. This looks a little bit steadier. Andrew Osagie is

:27:37. > :27:41.positioning himself well on the outside. I thought he was a bit

:27:42. > :27:42.unfortunate to be disqualified in the Commonwealth Games. Mark English

:27:43. > :27:47.is running extremely the Commonwealth Games. Mark English

:27:48. > :27:54.well winning a lot of races. He is very quick over the last couple of

:27:55. > :28:03.hundred meters. The bell sounds at 300 metres. Mark English is doing

:28:04. > :28:08.well, keeping where he wants to be. The Irish are very excited about his

:28:09. > :28:16.prospects. Andrew Osagie is running well. English moving well on the

:28:17. > :28:21.inside. He doesn't need to panic. It will open up, I am sure. He has a

:28:22. > :28:29.little bit of room to move out now. He follows the man from Great

:28:30. > :28:40.Britain. Paul Renaudie the tall Frenchman is hovering. Mark English

:28:41. > :28:47.glides past. Kazi is right there. Andrew Osagie is going to struggle.

:28:48. > :28:55.That is a fifth place for him. What on earth went wrong there? Has he

:28:56. > :29:00.pulled something? He was certainly in a good position at the top of the

:29:01. > :29:07.home straight. He was leading, where he wanted to be. Then he almost

:29:08. > :29:11.stops running coming down the home straight. He looks in a lot of pain

:29:12. > :29:16.with his back. Let's have a look at what happened. He put himself in the

:29:17. > :29:28.right position and then what happens? Watch English. But how

:29:29. > :29:34.quickly he accelerates and closes the gap. You fought at this point he

:29:35. > :29:44.could've waited. There goes English and he has been winning races. That

:29:45. > :29:52.is a great habit. Here is Andrew Osagie coming under pressure. He is

:29:53. > :29:58.suddenly run out of it in fifth place. He is clearly in trouble. Not

:29:59. > :30:05.impressive performance. He looked good. English looked comfortable.

:30:06. > :30:14.There is a lot of people who think this man will do well. Andrew Osagie

:30:15. > :30:19.at this point looks comfortable, he looks across. As he progresses

:30:20. > :30:26.towards the finishing line, we saw him lying on the track and grasp at

:30:27. > :30:36.his back. He does not look like he isn't much trouble. There is a

:30:37. > :30:45.grimace. I do not know if that is a grimace from his back what it is

:30:46. > :30:48.just disappointment. -- or if it is just disappointment. I think that is

:30:49. > :31:00.an injury. We cannot locate were the injury is.

:31:01. > :31:05.It is not to give you an indication when he is in the final moments. He

:31:06. > :31:12.is struggling to get up the stairs. Hopefully we can get a word with him

:31:13. > :31:15.from Phil Jones. He has struggled with hamstring injuries through the

:31:16. > :31:20.beginning of this summer. It could have been coming from his back. He

:31:21. > :31:25.looked to have been leaning back in the home straight. He did not have

:31:26. > :31:32.that extra gear. It could be linked to his hamstring. In the last 13

:31:33. > :31:34.metres when he needed to respond to the attack of the rest of the field,

:31:35. > :31:48.the cramped up. Explain to us what the problem is? I

:31:49. > :32:03.am not quite sure. I had problems with my sky attic nerve all year. --

:32:04. > :32:06.sciatic nerve. My time and position was not good. You were in a great

:32:07. > :32:15.deal of pain. Literally in the last 20 metres. I will see how it is

:32:16. > :32:18.after this ever get through. The frustrating thing from your

:32:19. > :32:26.perspective was that you were in control of the race. It was a good

:32:27. > :32:32.position. It is decent because it is the Europeans and it is practical.

:32:33. > :32:37.We will find out. -- it is practical.

:32:38. > :32:41.Very honest when he said he did not think he was good enough to get

:32:42. > :32:55.through despite having a painful nerve wench. -- sciatic nerve

:32:56. > :33:00.twinge. He will have it drummed into him, if you get into an automatic,

:33:01. > :33:08.fine spot, you run as hard as you can. The problem that he has can

:33:09. > :33:12.take time to settle down. Hopefully they can do something to calmness

:33:13. > :33:16.down but it is something that has been bothering him all season.

:33:17. > :33:21.Hopefully it will not continue to do so through the winter. People out

:33:22. > :33:27.there who have got back injuries and live with it every day, you can

:33:28. > :33:33.imagine how excruciating it is to an athlete who is trying to respond and

:33:34. > :33:45.push through when they are injured. It is horrible. You are in pain

:33:46. > :33:52.every time you try to extend. That was a very good one by English of

:33:53. > :33:58.Ireland, he is one to watch. -- very good race. We will be relying on

:33:59. > :34:05.Michael Rimmer in heat four. Heat the Mac has no British interest. --

:34:06. > :34:12.heat three. This is the second of Poland 's

:34:13. > :34:41.great hopes. Just a reminder that it is the top

:34:42. > :34:47.three could go through automatically and the four fastest losers. Andrew

:34:48. > :34:51.Osagie could still go through. Declan Murray, what a great one that

:34:52. > :34:57.was by Mark English, could they have another Irishman through # E is

:37:02. > :37:09.The Swedish 19-year-old is still looking good. Declan Murray still in

:37:10. > :37:17.third position. Declan Murray is starting to tie up badly. He

:37:18. > :37:30.disappears. Amel Tuka look strong from Bosnia. Declan Murray got into

:37:31. > :37:42.the right position but faded badly coming down the stretch. Adam

:37:43. > :37:45.Kszczot looked very strong. He looked to be in complete control

:37:46. > :37:53.having accelerated down the back straight. That is Kszczot from

:37:54. > :38:02.Poland. Amel Tuka from Bosnia is looking strong. I felt that Kszczot

:38:03. > :38:12.run well there. Two men from Poland into the semifinals. Adam Kszczot

:38:13. > :38:18.got himself into a good position. The 19-year-old still had the

:38:19. > :38:26.positional sense to look up at the scoreboard to see really was. We

:38:27. > :38:42.will confirm the times later to find out where Andrew Osagie stands.

:38:43. > :38:52.He is also qualifying. This is his last attempt. It is beyond 65

:38:53. > :38:55.metres. It took all of the three attempts that he was allowed to

:38:56. > :39:10.confirm a definite place in the final. He was probably in any way

:39:11. > :39:14.with the second round attempt. It was over to the Polish champion to

:39:15. > :39:26.join them in the final. 65 metres on the nose. Just under automatic

:39:27. > :39:46.qualification for Piotr Malachowski. Martin Dede can seem two offers

:39:47. > :39:51.German compatriots qualify. -- Wierig has seen two of his. He looks

:39:52. > :40:02.like he has gone beyond that automatic qualifying. I make that

:40:03. > :40:21.five in total, two Germans. Gerd Kanter of dystonia. -- of dystonia.

:40:22. > :40:28.Amel Tuka finish very strongly. Andreas Almgren also goes through.

:40:29. > :40:34.Giordano Benedetti might just be ahead of Andrew Osagie. We can

:40:35. > :40:45.confirm that for you. This is the result. Andrew Osagie is the third

:40:46. > :40:54.fastest loser. Mark English looked very good going through.

:40:55. > :41:05.Michael Rimmer of great Britain. Andrew Osagie is one of the fastest

:41:06. > :41:11.losers. We hope that Michael Rimmer comes through and that it is a slow

:41:12. > :41:24.race. We want to see Michael have a good race. He has struggled with

:41:25. > :41:25.back problems as well. Silver-medallist from 2010. He goes

:41:26. > :41:35.in this fourth heat. For Michael Rimmer, qualification

:41:36. > :41:50.will be tough. It is not one of the best years for him. He is racing

:41:51. > :42:02.against people who can 11.46. -- who can run 1.46.

:42:03. > :42:14.Essentially if the first five run faster than 1.48.19 Andrew Osagie is

:42:15. > :42:29.out. They have all run faster than that this year.

:42:30. > :42:33.If anyone is brave enough to make the pace is decent on the first lap

:42:34. > :42:45.then they could all go through. There's a next man in this heat so

:42:46. > :43:03.we did not have to have an extra heat. -- there is an extra man. The

:43:04. > :43:13.only thing about Pierre-Ambroise Bosse is he does not run tactically

:43:14. > :43:20.well in big races. It'll be interesting to see how he does. He

:43:21. > :43:25.just needs to get food here and Pierre-Ambroise Bosse has went to

:43:26. > :43:35.the front to do what his name says. He is making this a little bit slow.

:43:36. > :43:42.That is the right thing to do. At the end of the day they can all run

:43:43. > :43:49.faster than 1.48. The opening lap looks to be a little bit quicker.

:43:50. > :43:55.52.8. They can run 1.48 quite comfortably. Michael Rimmer is

:43:56. > :43:59.coming round the outside. He was in a bad position on the topping and is

:44:00. > :44:02.working his way round. He is giving himself a bad position on the

:44:03. > :44:18.topping and is working his way round. He is giving himself daylight

:44:19. > :44:24.so he Andreas Bube eight is always a quick finish and always gets through

:44:25. > :44:35.the rounds. Pierre-Ambroise Bosse had a little look around. He has to

:44:36. > :44:46.run for a time you. Michael Rimmer is going to come under pressure. He

:44:47. > :44:52.is in six. Has Andrew Osagie made it through? We will have to wait to

:44:53. > :44:55.see. Michael Rimmer hasn't and shakes his head. He has had an even

:44:56. > :45:02.more difficult season with back problems. I would thought it was

:45:03. > :45:07.starting to come together in the last few weeks for him. Not good,

:45:08. > :45:18.not good at all and he knows it. I just wonder if we have got anybody

:45:19. > :45:25.going through to the semifinal? That is what was going through my mind.

:45:26. > :45:34.Weeknight not have one guy in the semifinal. Michael Rimmer not

:45:35. > :45:39.running comfortably. Almost a stumble. Bosse in control, as we

:45:40. > :45:47.expect him to be. Michael Rimmer tries to look for the and Sprint.

:45:48. > :45:56.Five athletes ahead of him. Bosse is having no problems at all. Andrew

:45:57. > :46:04.Lasorda is out. Michael Rimmer is out so we don't have anybody in the

:46:05. > :46:15.next round. -- Andrew Suji. Bosse locks comfortable. Back to drawing

:46:16. > :46:23.board for the British 800 metres athletes. It was a disappointing

:46:24. > :46:30.performance from Michael Rimmer and also Osagie, who might have a very

:46:31. > :46:37.good excuse for his performance. Disappointment for Michael Rimmer?

:46:38. > :46:43.Yes, and for Andrew Osagie because he won't qualify as a fastest loser.

:46:44. > :46:48.Both of them back to getting strong and recovering from the injury

:46:49. > :46:51.problems they have had and from the mental turmoil of going through the

:46:52. > :47:01.Championships. Less sober Michael, but more for Andrew. Has not had any

:47:02. > :47:07.luck all year. He needs to go away to get healthy, get his head right

:47:08. > :47:12.to go into the winter season. It is the key thing in getting your mind

:47:13. > :47:16.back into the groove. We know they are capable runners. It is so

:47:17. > :47:21.frustrating when you have worked so hard and your body lets you down.

:47:22. > :47:25.They have both felt the energy of being in big finals and performing

:47:26. > :47:30.well. They will be desperately disappointed. We wish them the best

:47:31. > :47:35.of luck in their recovery because they have the world Championships in

:47:36. > :47:38.Beijing next year. Let's hope they can get back to the highs and

:47:39. > :47:44.successes. Andrew, with the progress he made making the global finals

:47:45. > :47:53.back-to-back, he would want that on his list, European final and

:47:54. > :47:56.potentially getting on the podium? Exactly, working towards something

:47:57. > :48:04.to show for their career. Andrew had a fast time. He worked so hard in

:48:05. > :48:09.2012 and was rewarded. But not able to deliver. A healthy body is what

:48:10. > :48:17.you require in athletics. We see it with Dai Greene as well. The dilemma

:48:18. > :48:23.for a lot of athletes, do I stay away until I am right. It is so sad

:48:24. > :48:28.to see them not getting through. Getting confirmation that Osagie is

:48:29. > :48:42.out. Let's get confirmation of the qualifiers from Steve Cram.

:48:43. > :49:02.Neither of the two British ex-beery instant 800 metres runners are

:49:03. > :49:11.through. Bad luck for the Brits, we are

:49:12. > :49:16.hoping for more success in the longer distances later. Jo Pavey is

:49:17. > :49:22.going in the 10,000 metres. Which brings me nicely on to another star,

:49:23. > :49:45.from 2002. Who could it be rushed in there goes the great Paula Radcliffe

:49:46. > :49:51.on her way to a famous victory. She has led all the way in Munich. The

:49:52. > :49:57.crowd on their feet. This is the greatest gift of distance running we

:49:58. > :50:05.have seen. Can she break the 30 minute mark? She wins the European

:50:06. > :50:15.Championship. It is a European record. What a performance from

:50:16. > :50:22.Paula Radcliffe. Breathtaking. It was a good year, 2002. You manage

:50:23. > :50:27.the two big championships. Was there a priority as he went into that

:50:28. > :50:34.year, one medal that meant more? They both meant a lot because I had

:50:35. > :50:40.gone into 94 injured and I could not go to the Commonwealth Games for the

:50:41. > :50:44.Europeans. I just wanted to make both the Championships. Also show I

:50:45. > :50:50.was in good shape because I knew which the winter I put in from my

:50:51. > :50:59.first The London Marathon, I was strong. I wanted to get the medals

:51:00. > :51:06.and the championship title but I was attacking the European record. That

:51:07. > :51:17.was when the European Championships came every four years. Who knows how

:51:18. > :51:19.many more you could have had around your neck. Jo Pavey was one of the

:51:20. > :51:21.phases of the Commonwealth Games with the performance to split the

:51:22. > :51:24.canyons to get on the rostrum. She became an overnight sensation. She

:51:25. > :51:29.had only given birth to her second child ten months before. What can

:51:30. > :51:44.she deliver here? She has been speaking to Phil Jones. Look at Jo

:51:45. > :51:50.Pavey. Bronze medal for Jo Pavey. Brilliant, brilliant performance. It

:51:51. > :51:52.seems only two minutes ago you were collecting a medal at the

:51:53. > :52:00.Commonwealth Games and now the European Championships. How have you

:52:01. > :52:10.taken stock of the workload? It is a difficult balance. I have had to

:52:11. > :52:14.recover but also put in some last-minute training. Difficult

:52:15. > :52:16.challenge, but I am ready for it. Spurred on by those amazing scenes

:52:17. > :52:21.in Glasgow? Every time I tried to make move, the crowd was deafening

:52:22. > :52:25.and it helped. I did have a race plan in mind but bearing in mind

:52:26. > :52:31.there were three canyons. I was surprised when I crossed the line I

:52:32. > :52:37.got a medal. At my age with two kids, I found it amusing. When I was

:52:38. > :52:44.younger I would put everything into it, eat, sleep and trained. Now I am

:52:45. > :52:49.busy and I don't get stressed about training. It seemed funny but quite

:52:50. > :52:57.pleasing. Being so busy in the day has given me more endurance. When I

:52:58. > :53:02.got into the athlete Village, it was all right and I felt rested. You are

:53:03. > :53:09.doing both five and ten here? Because I recovered after the

:53:10. > :53:17.10,000, because I just about managed to put the double together, he gave

:53:18. > :53:25.me hope I could do that again. You look at the European field, you must

:53:26. > :53:28.feel medals are up for grabs? There is a lot of strong athlete but I

:53:29. > :53:35.will be trying my best. It was pleasing for me that I could beat

:53:36. > :53:41.competitive with the canyons. -- be. I was pleased with the lap

:53:42. > :53:46.times. It sounds a bit boring, but I was pleasantly surprised I could

:53:47. > :53:52.still be competitive. What has it done in terms of your lip on the

:53:53. > :53:58.future? I have thoughts of carrying on for a while. I am still enjoying

:53:59. > :54:05.it. I think I will Peter out gradually and get slower and slower.

:54:06. > :54:09.It don't think anybody wants to see you going anywhere Jo Pavey. We

:54:10. > :54:14.loved that performance. So many people are talking about her. She

:54:15. > :54:19.genuinely was that kind of inspiration to people, we all know

:54:20. > :54:23.as mums, when you are away from them you have so much more energy.

:54:24. > :54:28.as mums, when you are away from them you have so much She relished the

:54:29. > :54:32.time she could chill out in the Athletes' Village and recharge their

:54:33. > :54:36.batteries. But she said something you were nodding to. When you have

:54:37. > :54:41.children if put things into perspective. And the stresses and

:54:42. > :54:47.strains you agonised over seemed inconsequential? Yes, she used to

:54:48. > :54:58.worry about the little things, what she was going to eat and now she has

:54:59. > :54:59.not got as much time to do that. She can focus on going out and

:55:00. > :55:02.performing. The best thing is the way she attacks every race. She

:55:03. > :55:09.wants to come out and said she has no regrets. She left it all out

:55:10. > :55:17.there on the track. That is why people find her so inspirational.

:55:18. > :55:22.You and her were racing together as kids in the Cross Country? I wasn't

:55:23. > :55:29.back close, she was far ahead. She was battling with the English school

:55:30. > :55:44.titles in Yeovil, which would have been 1988. Denise, it must fill you

:55:45. > :55:45.both with joy. 40 is not old, but in athletics terms, if she wins here

:55:46. > :55:52.she will be the oldest gold-medallist in history? Yes, we

:55:53. > :55:58.have watched each other complete over the years and in the senior

:55:59. > :56:00.international ranks. Her performance at the Commonwealth Games has

:56:01. > :56:06.endeared her to many people, particularly in Europe. I was at a

:56:07. > :56:18.relative's house a few days ago and came across this wonderful article.

:56:19. > :56:24.She is the one to watch. They have put Jo Pavey as one of the six to

:56:25. > :56:31.watch. It is testament to what she can achieve. Mo Farah is there.

:56:32. > :56:39.Colin, she is not just an unearthed talent. The quick mother. I bumped

:56:40. > :56:42.into her as we talent. The quick mother. I bumped

:56:43. > :56:51.into came back down from the Commonwealth Games at the airport.

:56:52. > :56:53.She was still so gentle and putting her stuff through the x-ray machine.

:56:54. > :57:03.She was very buoyant and enjoying the attention given to her. I was

:57:04. > :57:13.in, I wonder what what are you two thinking, why can't we there

:57:14. > :57:19.competing? It is too late. Jo Pavey has turned back the hands of time.

:57:20. > :57:24.She has done an amazing job of keeping herself in shape. She said

:57:25. > :57:28.when she looks back at the 10,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games,

:57:29. > :57:32.what is satisfying is she ran a very good lap. Like she said, she is

:57:33. > :57:40.worried she will get slower, but it is still there at the moment. The

:57:41. > :57:43.rest others cannot do that. If any of these performances have inspired

:57:44. > :57:49.you, you can find out where a club or activity near you might be

:57:50. > :57:53.happening. It might not be athletics, but go to the BBC Sport

:57:54. > :58:01.website. It was a busy morning session to pick you up this morning.

:58:02. > :58:06.It was the 1500 metre heats, the women. Let's look at Laura Muir,

:58:07. > :58:14.which did not go well for her. What did you make of her racing? She got

:58:15. > :58:21.bumped and barged quite a lot during the race. She had run a wide for a

:58:22. > :58:28.long time in the race up to that point. She did say towards it was

:58:29. > :58:34.messy. She did not run confidently. You can see she is tensing up and

:58:35. > :58:42.struggling. She has seen the qualifying places running away from

:58:43. > :58:50.her. But at the same time she is disappointed. She has tried to come

:58:51. > :59:01.back from the pushing in the Commonwealth Games. She has

:59:02. > :59:05.struggled to get back on top of that and came away disappointed. It is

:59:06. > :59:14.something she was aiming for in Scotland. Wanted to make amends

:59:15. > :59:25.here, but the race did not go to plan. After the personal best in

:59:26. > :59:28.Paris, it looks like she was one of the Brits you would have to beat.

:59:29. > :59:32.She was the girl with the power, if you like. The season has not backed

:59:33. > :59:36.up? . Laura Weightman, who is right with her. What can happen now

:59:37. > :59:42.mentally for an athlete, they go under for a little while. She will

:59:43. > :59:52.need a lot of support to tell herself these things happen. You

:59:53. > :59:56.have to get over them. In the ten days she has had, I don't think she

:59:57. > :59:58.has. She has not grown from that experience. Not mature enough, it is

:59:59. > :59:59.too close. It is a shame to see somebody with that ability not

:00:00. > :00:01.getting the best out of the championships. She can deliver. As

:00:02. > :00:03.Denise said, you have to deal with the disappointment, take what you

:00:04. > :00:06.can and learn from it. Laura is very intelligent and probably spend too

:00:07. > :00:10.much time looking over and sometimes there aren't any reasons, these

:00:11. > :00:17.things happen and you cannot do anything about it. The next heat,

:00:18. > :00:22.Laura Weightman and Hannah England who had the fabulous run in the

:00:23. > :00:31.Commonwealth Games. They were in this one and they raced well?

:00:32. > :00:38.They ensured that they qualified. They would have known that they were

:00:39. > :00:44.ahead. They knew that they were going to get fastest losers, and

:00:45. > :00:51.that is why Hannah is not stressing. Laura Weightman ran really well, she

:00:52. > :00:54.showed the confidence that she has gained from getting the silver medal

:00:55. > :00:58.in the Commonwealth Games, and she ran with maturity, she did not do

:00:59. > :01:05.any more than she needed today. Hannah England will hope to just

:01:06. > :01:10.improve on the Commonwealth Games performance. Yes, she seems to be

:01:11. > :01:15.getting herself in the right position at the right time, she ran

:01:16. > :01:21.a brilliant race. She can get boxed in, but she gave herself every

:01:22. > :01:26.opportunity to be in the race. A bit more speed that we need to find. A

:01:27. > :01:31.bit more speed in during. She came into the season a bit behind, but

:01:32. > :01:36.she has not panicked, she has moved on. She suffered in the Commonwealth

:01:37. > :01:44.Games, but she will have recovery time here. She will come back fresh.

:01:45. > :01:48.There was also the men's 400 metres heats this morning, and all of the

:01:49. > :01:52.British men did well, they qualified. It is Matthew

:01:53. > :01:57.Hudson-Smith that we will look at first, he has burst onto the scene,

:01:58. > :02:04.he went under 45 in Glasgow, he anchored the gold medal in the

:02:05. > :02:09.relay, and he is becoming a star, and a compelling athlete to watch.

:02:10. > :02:14.We love his innocence. When he finishes a competition, he is

:02:15. > :02:20.radiant, and he is appreciative of the situation. I love that, it is

:02:21. > :02:25.refreshing to see that he is improving and enjoying it without

:02:26. > :02:31.getting arrogant, because sometimes athletes can have an aura about

:02:32. > :02:35.them. He is learning his trade. Very laid back. He managed to sleep in

:02:36. > :02:40.the team meeting last night when the speeches were going on, according to

:02:41. > :02:47.our colleagues. He has got a lovely way about him, and his performance

:02:48. > :02:52.on the rostrum of -- was worthy, he was not sure where to stand, but he

:02:53. > :02:59.might have to do it again this week. And Martyn Rooney was really

:03:00. > :03:03.impressive this morning, 45.48. In an outside lane. He dominated so

:03:04. > :03:09.well, he controlled it the whole way round. I love the fact that he

:03:10. > :03:15.thinks this could be his Championships. He could do something

:03:16. > :03:19.special. If he can go under 45 seconds a game, he may be the only

:03:20. > :03:26.one capable of doing it. Let's keep our fingers crossed, and see how it

:03:27. > :03:30.goes. The semifinals tomorrow, the finals on Friday. Let's catch up

:03:31. > :03:38.with Steve Cram on the women's's 1500 metre heats, Hannah England and

:03:39. > :03:59.Laura Weightman. It was a sense of knowing what you had the fastest

:04:00. > :04:09.losers were going but the British athletes went intelligently. Yes, it

:04:10. > :04:15.is difficult, Championships, it is hard to get through the rounds at

:04:16. > :04:18.times. Laura Muir, after the world indoor Championships and the

:04:19. > :04:21.Commonwealth Games and here, she will have to have a look at that

:04:22. > :04:26.with her coach, but for Lora and Hannah, all good, and looking

:04:27. > :04:30.forward to Friday. I will let you focus on the next races on the

:04:31. > :04:36.track. Goldie Sayers qualified this morning, she is the captain of Great

:04:37. > :04:41.Britain, so she has the added responsibility. She will love that,

:04:42. > :04:46.she is the mother figure, she has championship experience, and she

:04:47. > :04:50.threw well this morning. She qualified on her only throw. A

:04:51. > :04:57.brilliant result. She almost looked surprised. Actually, things were not

:04:58. > :05:03.right, but I still got the qualifying distance! It bodes well

:05:04. > :05:05.for the final. Maybe she is liking the destruction of the

:05:06. > :05:13.responsibility. It seems to be working. I thought I would jump in!

:05:14. > :05:20.Dwain Chambers is a Mitchell athlete, he picked up something that

:05:21. > :05:29.Goldie Sayers said, imagine this was your last race, how will you run? It

:05:30. > :05:36.was magical and mature. I thought Phil had said that to him. It was

:05:37. > :05:40.Goldie Sayers, the captain! I wondered why still was hanging out

:05:41. > :05:44.with Dwain Chambers! Tiffany Porter has not got Sally Pearson to race,

:05:45. > :05:49.because she has been in front of her. No Europeans have been in front

:05:50. > :05:54.of her, so she must feel that this is for her, this championship is for

:05:55. > :06:00.her to win. You are absolutely right, but she has a difficult

:06:01. > :06:08.challenge, which is Cindy Billaud from France. She has run 12.56 this

:06:09. > :06:14.year, she is looking dominant. Tiffany is looking pretty strong.

:06:15. > :06:20.She surprised everybody with that performance, into a very strong

:06:21. > :06:26.headwind, -2. We could see her getting close to her personal best

:06:27. > :06:27.and the British record. Let's get back out in the field, Steve Backley

:06:28. > :06:44.has the shot put. David Storl is the outright

:06:45. > :06:53.favourite. Tomasz Majewski is a previous

:06:54. > :07:07.champion. The Croatian qualified with just shy

:07:08. > :07:19.of 20 metres, able need more than that. That looks around 20 metres. A

:07:20. > :07:24.red double up of the shot put and the javelin, he is a 77 meter man,

:07:25. > :07:30.impressive. The 23-year-old, a lifetime best of 20.60. He might not

:07:31. > :07:38.threaten that, but he will take the lead in the early stages. We

:07:39. > :07:44.mentioned the big favourite, and here he is, the defending champion,

:07:45. > :07:54.he can drop a bomb here. That is superb week.

:07:55. > :08:01.The man who became the youngest ever shot put world champion in 2011

:08:02. > :08:09.looking on his way to defending his European title. 24 years old. He

:08:10. > :08:13.said he wants 22 metres, he may have put the competition to bed in the

:08:14. > :08:28.first round. The rest have to follow that. Borja Vivas has thrown over 21

:08:29. > :08:32.metres in the past. A low elbow. He might lose centimetres from that.

:08:33. > :08:46.You saw his elbow drop as he rotated. Did not like that. But it

:08:47. > :08:50.is the Spanish champion, the man who took over from Martinez as the

:08:51. > :08:56.Spanish number one, looking to make his mark in the shot put final. The

:08:57. > :09:05.first round is always a chance to capitalise on the adrenaline.

:09:06. > :09:17.If the door open for Tomasz Majewski? David Storl, 21.41.

:09:18. > :09:24.He settled his big frame at the back of the circle and exploded out

:09:25. > :09:33.towards 21 metres. He went a bit early, for me. He is a tall man.

:09:34. > :09:42.140 kilos. He takes some unwrapping, but he unwrapped early,

:09:43. > :09:43.which make the shot come through. We know he is capable of more than

:09:44. > :09:53.that. The temperature drops slightly, not

:09:54. > :09:57.necessarily for them, but it is a bit cool and cloudier than early.

:09:58. > :10:02.The weather forecast is mixed for the week, so we might see showers,

:10:03. > :10:08.as you would expect in a country with rain and lakes. It is pleasant

:10:09. > :10:23.at the moment, though. Next, a man who was one of the greatest.

:10:24. > :10:36.Thompson is way out at the front of the rest of the field. A personal

:10:37. > :10:44.best in any decathlon. That was an aggressive and constructive piece of

:10:45. > :10:49.pole vaulting. That is just short of 16. The British support recognise a

:10:50. > :10:51.very good performance indeed. Can he run a personal best here? He is

:10:52. > :11:00.charging for the line. The European champion 1986, Daley

:11:01. > :11:12.Thomson. At last, the reception he deserves.

:11:13. > :11:20.European champion, greeted by the British in this crowd.

:11:21. > :11:27.The next event on the track if the men's 400 metres in the decathlon,

:11:28. > :11:29.which started this morning, so let's bring you up to speed with Steve

:11:30. > :11:53.Backley. He will have to do a lifetime best

:11:54. > :12:04.to get amongst the medals. A good first event for Eelco Sintnicolaas.

:12:05. > :12:13.Kai Kazmirek running well alongside after a deli.

:12:14. > :12:20.Kai Kazmirek is fancied to take the gold medal here. It is a new

:12:21. > :12:28.personal best. Can he improve on his opening attempt? That was 7.21. It

:12:29. > :12:33.is an improvement, 7.39. Kai Kazmirek is number one. They have

:12:34. > :12:40.had a sprint and long dreamt, they are now doing the shot put. This is

:12:41. > :12:45.Kevin Mayer. I think he likes that. Ashley Bryant needs to get beyond

:12:46. > :12:51.the 14 metre mark. No. He needs a big improvement. Arthur Abele looks

:12:52. > :12:59.wobbly at the back. He likes that, it is big, 15.39. He is up for it.

:13:00. > :13:05.Here are the standings after three events. Germany has a rich history

:13:06. > :13:20.in the decathlon. Ashley Bryant of Great Britain is

:13:21. > :13:24.down in 14th place, he has not had the greatest start. We discussed how

:13:25. > :13:29.difficult it would be for him to build on his success in Glasgow.

:13:30. > :13:33.The fourth event, the high jump, has taken place, Steve Backley can fill

:13:34. > :13:49.you in. The event leader. This is his second

:13:50. > :13:55.attempt at 2.01. That was no good. His best was 1.98. That was

:13:56. > :13:59.disappointing, coming into this event in the lead, and he has opened

:14:00. > :14:08.the door for his team-mate, Kai Kazmirek. He could maybe jump into

:14:09. > :14:09.the first place position after four events. Just before hundreds meters

:14:10. > :14:28.to come. Kai Kazmirek had a fantastic

:14:29. > :14:35.clearance. He went on to clear 2.13. After the disappointment of four

:14:36. > :14:41.Arthur Abele. Another German, the European leader, who may have to get

:14:42. > :14:51.beyond his own mark. Nobody expected this, it was Andre Kravchenko, 2.22.

:14:52. > :14:58.That matches the best ever performance in a decathlon high

:14:59. > :15:05.jump. That is world-class high jumping. That leapfrogged everybody,

:15:06. > :15:11.he had been in seventh place, and then he found himself in the lead,

:15:12. > :15:19.matching personal bests in the shot put also, he went beyond 15 metres.

:15:20. > :15:22.The Belarus athlete, the Olympics or the medallist, the World Junior

:15:23. > :15:29.Championship in the past, an unknown quantity this year, he looks as

:15:30. > :15:35.though he is in contention. Along with Kai Kazmirek of Germany. The

:15:36. > :15:46.first day has been eventful, and it looks as though it will be very

:15:47. > :15:55.close indeed. There is the confirmation. 22 points in front of

:15:56. > :16:07.the German. Just the 400 metres to come.

:16:08. > :16:14.All of these athletes are in contention is that the medals. Six

:16:15. > :16:20.athletes. Six events to come, I should say. Ashley Bryant,

:16:21. > :16:26.disappointment at being in 20th, after his silver medal in Glasgow.

:16:27. > :16:33.He will be disappointing with his standing, Ashley Bryant but it is

:16:34. > :16:40.understandable, it is so difficult. Multi-eventers don't usually choose

:16:41. > :16:44.to compete ten days apart? Not by choice. It is hard to be critical.

:16:45. > :16:49.It is tough, probably nothing in his legs. As much as he thinks mentally

:16:50. > :16:56.he wants to be aggressive and attack, it is a shame. Time for the

:16:57. > :17:03.fifth event. They will be desperate to get this 400 metres done. There

:17:04. > :17:09.is a bit of a delay, which means women's 10,000 metres will go off a

:17:10. > :17:12.little bit later. The first of these heaps and Ashley Bryant is in heat

:17:13. > :17:29.number four. Andrew Potter has this. Arthur Abele has run so well so far

:17:30. > :17:53.this season. Arthur Abele, with this strong

:17:54. > :18:00.German challenge in the decathlon is running well. Oleksiy Kasyanov is in

:18:01. > :18:09.lame five, he is running well. -- lane. The Ukrainian trying to finish

:18:10. > :18:19.strongly. It is a good run from Arbor Abele. He is inside his

:18:20. > :18:27.season's best. 48.59, his good day continues. It is a very good run for

:18:28. > :18:32.Arthur Abele. It was well timed by Oleksiy Kasyanov, lying in seventh

:18:33. > :18:45.coming into this final event of the first day. Arbor Abele had a decent

:18:46. > :18:49.amount of running in him. Get close to your personal best and get better

:18:50. > :18:55.than your season's best and that is what he has done. Third place coming

:18:56. > :19:01.into this event and his position will be good at the first day.

:19:02. > :19:05.They have redrawn these heaps so Ashley Bryant will be going in the

:19:06. > :19:11.next heat. This is a chance for him to get some points if he can get it

:19:12. > :19:17.out of the bag? Last event of the day, has to show a lot of heart.

:19:18. > :19:22.Attack it and bring it home. The next day he will try to salvage

:19:23. > :19:26.something. You heard Andrew saying it is about as getting as close to

:19:27. > :19:33.your personal best to your season's best. Get something technical to

:19:34. > :19:38.work on and take it into the winter competitions he might have going

:19:39. > :19:44.forward. It is a building block, laying your best and your training

:19:45. > :19:47.to get something out of your season. Whatever happens he has the silver

:19:48. > :19:55.medal from Glasgow, he will hopefully build on. He will want to

:19:56. > :20:02.take more than this than a top 20 place. Steve Cram will be calling

:20:03. > :20:08.his heat. The high jump went on a bit longer. It has given them time

:20:09. > :20:27.to get ready for these 400-metre races, the last event on the first

:20:28. > :20:36.day. The German who is in second place, we must of had another

:20:37. > :20:47.redraw. I am just going to look. We were handed, ten minutes ago

:20:48. > :21:10.redraw, which included the Germany will be in the fourth heat now.

:21:11. > :21:17.Sintnicolaas, he has done well. This tell burger. He is on the outside.

:21:18. > :21:29.-- Dominick this tell burger. Ashley Bryant Iran 49 in Glasgow. Great

:21:30. > :21:38.silver medal behind Canada's Damian Warner. Has not been a great day but

:21:39. > :22:04.understandable. The time between these two events.

:22:05. > :22:17.Quite a long cold in the set position. It is Distelberger of

:22:18. > :22:27.Austria who started the best. Ashley Bryant making decent progress. Rico

:22:28. > :22:35.Freimuth, would wanted to have been in a better position than he finds

:22:36. > :22:43.himself. Sintnicolaas coming through. Ashley Bryant are moving

:22:44. > :22:48.with him. Gael Querin of France. Ashley Bryant going backwards in the

:22:49. > :22:52.home straight. Sintnicolaas doing exactly what he wanted to do.

:22:53. > :23:01.Sintnicolaas it is who wins it. It is a pretty good performance. Will

:23:02. > :23:10.be a season's best for the Dutchman. He has some good events in day two.

:23:11. > :23:15.If he had an excellent pole vaults, if he keeps himself in contention,

:23:16. > :23:21.that has set himself up nicely. Rico Freimuth, after a disappointing day,

:23:22. > :23:30.that was better for him. Ashley Bryant faded in the home straight.

:23:31. > :23:36.It has been a tough day and the delays do not help, but they do need

:23:37. > :23:43.the extra time. Ashley Bryant was in a decent position but it is a tiring

:23:44. > :23:47.event. When you have done a decathlon less than two weeks ago.

:23:48. > :23:57.Sintnicolaas did himself an awful lot of good.

:23:58. > :24:08.Round two of the shot put. David Storl of Germany. Can he extend his

:24:09. > :24:16.lead? He stepped out. Stepped out of the front of the circle. If you get

:24:17. > :24:22.it right, the force comes back and it almost keeps you from making the

:24:23. > :24:28.file. You can see his left foot came down on top of the board at the

:24:29. > :24:35.front of the circle. That would have put him off balance. Second round a

:24:36. > :24:44.bit of a mess for David Storl. It is up to the rest to change that. Borja

:24:45. > :24:52.Vivas of Spain. Elbow stayed a little bit higher this time. I think

:24:53. > :24:58.he likes that, all he is in pain! It was a big throw. Getting all the

:24:59. > :25:12.falls into the shot, almost pushed him back. Saved it and did not step

:25:13. > :25:18.out. It looks like an improvement on his opening round throw.

:25:19. > :25:26.Appreciation from his coach. It is an improvement. He is closing in on

:25:27. > :25:35.David Storl. Tomas Mejias skeet is capable of 21 metres plus. On the

:25:36. > :25:41.21-metre line or the big man. Does not give much away. Just saw him

:25:42. > :25:48.lose the left side in the first round. Maybe stayed with it a bit

:25:49. > :25:57.better there but leaned on it rather than trusting his legs to force the

:25:58. > :26:11.power up through the body. Sloppy from the double Olympic champion.

:26:12. > :26:20.Just shy of 21 metres by the looks of it. His first round was just over

:26:21. > :26:30.20 metres. Real battle for the minor medal. Can anyone get up to David

:26:31. > :26:33.Storl. These athletes are looking right on their game to get around 21

:26:34. > :26:40.metres. David Storl looks comfortable beyond that. The

:26:41. > :26:46.Croatian has thrown a lifetime best. Stipe Zunic. Heat number three of

:26:47. > :27:25.the 400 metres in the decathlon. Ready to lay siege to the 400 metres

:27:26. > :27:34.now. Little bit of noise inside the stadium. Ready now. The alarm goes

:27:35. > :27:49.and the false start signal. It might be the athlete in lame number four.

:27:50. > :28:06.Lars Vikan Rise. Yes it was. You can see the tat is on the legs of

:28:07. > :28:17.Kravchenko. They depict the ten disciplines in the decathlon. All he

:28:18. > :28:21.has to do is beat the person you can change it. He has had a very good

:28:22. > :28:32.first day, Kravchenko. Took a huge leap into the lead in seventh place.

:28:33. > :28:38.Personal best in the shot put. He hasn't got a season's best this year

:28:39. > :28:47.in the 400 metres. But he is capable of going below 47.17. Kravchenko in

:28:48. > :29:15.lame number two. We are looking at the two on the

:29:16. > :29:25.inside, Kravchenko and a less key coercion of -- Ilya Shkurenyov. It

:29:26. > :29:29.is a strong looking run from Ilya Shkurenyov, the Russians. Little bit

:29:30. > :29:36.and find the pace at the moment, Kravchenko. The man in the lead in

:29:37. > :29:41.the decathlon at the moment. An impressive run so far from Ilya

:29:42. > :29:53.Shkurenyov. Long way clear here and not showing any signs of slowing

:29:54. > :30:01.down. Big season's best for Ilya Shkurenyov. A decent time.

:30:02. > :30:06.Kravchenko was a long way behind. He is going to lose his lead after this

:30:07. > :30:12.event. It was an impressive run for the Russian. Got off to a reasonable

:30:13. > :30:18.start in the 100 metres. We knew his running ability was right up there.

:30:19. > :30:20.He had great endurance in the 400. Held onto his speed well down the

:30:21. > :30:36.home straight. It has been a tough day for you,

:30:37. > :30:40.Ashley, but coming off the back of the Commonwealth Games, you have

:30:41. > :30:45.shown great determination. It has not quite gone according to plan,

:30:46. > :30:51.but you have to admire your courage. One of the things I am happy with, I

:30:52. > :30:58.made a few mistakes in Glasgow, and I have corrected that he. The high

:30:59. > :31:02.jump, I cleared everything, and then my legs reminded me I did Glasgow a

:31:03. > :31:07.couple of weeks back. Wanted to score well, but I have to realise I

:31:08. > :31:14.did do a decathlon a couple of weeks back. Steve Cram said that everybody

:31:15. > :31:18.else in the 400 race with you has been gearing up with this, but you

:31:19. > :31:21.have not had that opportunity, occurs your goal was the

:31:22. > :31:27.Commonwealth Games. I thought I run the 400 well until 250. But it was

:31:28. > :31:36.not there. It was a bit disappointing. But I know why. You

:31:37. > :31:42.will come back fighting tomorrow, five more events. Hopefully, I can

:31:43. > :31:53.get back on track with a view good performances tomorrow. All the best.

:31:54. > :32:06.Borja Vivas is chasing down David Storl in the shot put. Just opened

:32:07. > :32:12.up the left shoulder, maybe. Went around the left side a bit too

:32:13. > :32:17.quickly. Cleared it out of the way. Possibly suffered as a result of

:32:18. > :32:22.that. I do not think that is an improvement. What do you do, you

:32:23. > :32:35.three centimetres ahead of Tomasz Majewski, but chasing 21.41.

:32:36. > :32:42.Can Tomasz Majewski close in on the lead? That looked better

:32:43. > :32:49.technically. Just crouched away from that. He does not quite use his full

:32:50. > :33:01.height, 2.04 metres. He looked low on that. He knows it. 21.41. He

:33:02. > :33:11.wants to win here, he has won twice before. No improvement. We wait for

:33:12. > :33:22.the final heat in the decathlon 400 metres.

:33:23. > :33:31.Andre Kravchenko, a long way off his personal best, but he has not won

:33:32. > :33:40.400 metres this season. In the next heat, we have Kai Kazmirek, who is

:33:41. > :33:46.in second place at the moment. He was moved into this heat because of

:33:47. > :33:56.the delay. The women's 10,000 metres is coming up at 7:20pm, 7:25pm, Jo

:33:57. > :34:04.Pavey and Beth Potter involved. To look out for here, Kai Kazmirek of

:34:05. > :34:17.Germany. The Germans have such a proud record, going back a long

:34:18. > :34:23.time. Rico Freimuth's father was an East German athlete. He has been a

:34:24. > :34:26.disappointment today, others have come forward, Kai Kazmirek and Kevin

:34:27. > :34:42.Meyer. Kai Kazmirek on the far right side

:34:43. > :34:49.is capable of going below 47 seconds. He is a very fine 400 metre

:34:50. > :35:01.runner. He has gone off on a grand pace. He led the long jump with

:35:02. > :35:07.7.68, a personal best. He is going to lead this. He went off very

:35:08. > :35:15.quickly indeed. Also looking strong, Kevin Meyer in Lane 2. This is a

:35:16. > :35:26.very impressive run from Kai Kazmirek. Just outside his season's

:35:27. > :35:31.best, but that is a good run. That is what it takes out of you. Getting

:35:32. > :35:37.close to your season's best, that is all you can ask for. He will move

:35:38. > :35:43.into the lead with that. Did he ask for that? He has been flawless on

:35:44. > :35:54.the first day, fantastic. He may find himself not in the lead after

:35:55. > :36:00.the final event of the first day. It was Andrei Krauchanka in the high

:36:01. > :36:07.jump that extended and pushed him out in front after four events. But

:36:08. > :36:08.Kai Kazmirek has scored more than any other European athlete this

:36:09. > :36:16.year. Absolutely exhausted after a great

:36:17. > :36:27.day's work. A big datacom. They will enjoy their sleep tonight.

:36:28. > :36:31.The sun is setting beautifully this evening, as we approach our first

:36:32. > :36:37.final on the track. One of the athletes we have been looking at

:36:38. > :36:41.might appear to be enjoying an Indian summer in her career, but she

:36:42. > :36:46.has been one of the most consistent performers for Great Britain over

:36:47. > :36:48.many years, and most recently her performance in an England vest was

:36:49. > :36:55.one of the moment of the Commonwealth Games.

:36:56. > :37:05.It is raining, it is a bit cold, perfect running weather. Jo Pavey, a

:37:06. > :37:09.very familiar sight. Back into action after the birth of her second

:37:10. > :37:17.child. She will be happy to be in amongst it. Jo Pavey at the front

:37:18. > :37:20.again. What an inspirational run. She desperately wants a medal, there

:37:21. > :37:31.is a medal available, just keep driving. The crowd of boring her

:37:32. > :37:32.arm, can she hang gone? Come on, one more! She will be OK, a bronze

:37:33. > :37:46.medal. A brilliant performance. Three top places across four

:37:47. > :37:50.Olympics, a European silver medal, countless other medals, she knows

:37:51. > :37:56.how to do it on this stage, and she was leading the athlete out. She was

:37:57. > :38:02.straight out there. We need to get on with this! She has got the

:38:03. > :38:07.experience, at this stage, she just wants to get on with the race. It

:38:08. > :38:11.has been tough to come back and recover from the Commonwealth Games

:38:12. > :38:17.and to get the training in. Hopefully, she is ready to go again

:38:18. > :38:22.tonight, as is Beth Potter. Indeed, she was fifth in the Commonwealth

:38:23. > :38:26.Games. Let's go to Steve Cram and Brendan Foster.

:38:27. > :38:34.Is this the time for Jo Pavey? Can she finally win a major championship

:38:35. > :38:44.gold medal? She came close to choose a go. The lady running behind her,

:38:45. > :38:50.Ana Dulce Felix, ran away from her in the last few laps in Helsinki.

:38:51. > :38:59.Then, they went to London, Jo Pavey ran so well. A big field, some

:39:00. > :39:13.familiar names from cross-country, Sophie Duarte, Anna dolce Felix.

:39:14. > :39:22.Fiona while Britain. Clemence Calvin will be the big threat. Sara Moreira

:39:23. > :39:26.has raised Jo Pavey on many occasions over the years. And Beth

:39:27. > :39:45.Potter, after the great fifth place. Fionnuala Britton had a great couple

:39:46. > :39:54.of years. Perhaps starting her marathon career as well. Contesting

:39:55. > :40:00.the 10,000 metres first, the first track final here in Z?rich. The

:40:01. > :40:05.first year that Jo Pavey started running 10,000 metres in earnest,

:40:06. > :40:08.she almost picked up a medal, you can remember back to Japan,

:40:09. > :40:19.different conditions from tonight. She just missed out. She finished in

:40:20. > :40:25.fourth place. That was seven years ago, and here we are, still going

:40:26. > :40:34.strong. Hopefully, fingers crossed, a big performance tonight. The

:40:35. > :40:39.conditions are just about perfect. It is around 18 or 19 degrees.

:40:40. > :40:46.Brendan and I in our shirtsleeves. We are looking forward to what I

:40:47. > :40:52.think will be a fascinating race. Jo Pavey always looks like a reluctant

:40:53. > :40:58.hero. With that bit of pace that she showed, the tenacity, we know she

:40:59. > :41:08.always has it, but the pace at the end of the 10,000 metre race might

:41:09. > :41:12.be enough here. Gavin is here, her husband, both of her children are

:41:13. > :41:17.fear, grandparents in the stand as well. We might get a glint of them.

:41:18. > :41:23.I think that young lady will be a big threat, Clemence Calvin. She won

:41:24. > :41:32.the European 10,000 metres in very hot conditions in her first 10,000

:41:33. > :41:34.metres of her career. She is just embarking on her championship

:41:35. > :41:42.career, so it will be difficult in terms of experience. Jo Pavey has

:41:43. > :41:46.the experience in her favour. Beth Potter represented Scotland so well

:41:47. > :41:54.in Glasgow. She looks a little nervous, Jo Pavey.

:41:55. > :42:01.She has been a superb competitor, when she has been fit, not having

:42:02. > :42:10.injury problems, she has always done very well in the big races. The

:42:11. > :42:17.women's 10,000 metre final. Is it a night of destiny for Jo Pavey? Is

:42:18. > :42:29.this the night she can get on top of the Rostron? Brendan, I am trying to

:42:30. > :42:35.get it set up, but we would take great pleasure in it. It would be

:42:36. > :42:39.great. Listening to your introduction, I would have an each

:42:40. > :42:44.way bet on Jo Pavey and on Clemence Calvin, because that is the

:42:45. > :42:47.information you gave us! A couple of them have good chances. You said

:42:48. > :42:53.that Jo Pavey looked nervous, when you are running a 10,000 metres just

:42:54. > :42:57.after the Commonwealth Games 5000 metres, you see a sign that says 25

:42:58. > :43:02.laps to go, and that makes you nervous. We are going to have a

:43:03. > :43:06.competitive race, it will not be one of the greater distance races of all

:43:07. > :43:12.time, it will not be like the race that Paula Radcliffe run in Munich.

:43:13. > :43:22.Here, you can hardly pick a favourite. Lots of athletes have a

:43:23. > :43:29.good chance. Lots of the European stars establishing their credentials

:43:30. > :43:33.here. But because they do not run a big 2000 -- 10,000 metre race apart

:43:34. > :43:41.from here, you cannot judge. It is difficult to do so. I hope Beth

:43:42. > :43:45.Potter can equip herself well. She ran well for Scotland in the

:43:46. > :43:51.Commonwealth Games. But it will be tough, she ran the 10000 and 5000 in

:43:52. > :43:55.the Commonwealth Games. On an emotional high from the Commonwealth

:43:56. > :44:04.Games, Jo Pavey, and tonight, it would be great to see her as

:44:05. > :44:10.competitive as she was then. If you look at her record at 10,000 metre

:44:11. > :44:14.races against some of the big names, she has raised Fionnuala

:44:15. > :44:20.Britton three times and has one on each occasion, she has raised Sara

:44:21. > :44:28.Moreira twice, she has won once, she has only raced against Anna dolce

:44:29. > :44:38.Felix once, she lost that. But she comes here in as good a shape as she

:44:39. > :44:43.could possibly hope for at 40. You sound like the Cheltenham races, you

:44:44. > :44:50.back your horse, then you look at the form book. It is picking got on

:44:51. > :44:54.your valid point, they do not race each other often. A few of them

:44:55. > :45:01.raced against each other in the European 10,000 metres earlier in

:45:02. > :45:08.the season. But Jo Pavey and a lot of the British athletes, there was

:45:09. > :45:12.an English 10,000 metres in May, and Jo Pavey went there and perform very

:45:13. > :45:18.well, she won that race. The European race was won by Leonard

:45:19. > :45:23.Calvin. The other good Portuguese athlete will contest the marathon

:45:24. > :45:29.here. That gives a line through the others. Clemence Calvin came out on

:45:30. > :45:34.top, but very different conditions. Some people go well in the heat and

:45:35. > :45:53.humidity, others do not. For Jo Pavey and most of these, they will

:45:54. > :45:57.be very happy with the conditions. Just as the athletes come round the

:45:58. > :46:14.bend back, they go past the shot put circle. A lot of weight behind the

:46:15. > :46:21.shot. He likes it. His best so far is 20 metres and 86. I don't think

:46:22. > :46:37.he is closing in on the first throw of David Storl. This man has thrown

:46:38. > :46:45.further than anyone this season. Very simple technique. Balanced,

:46:46. > :46:51.powerful. Good drive from the legs. Finishes it off from the top half.

:46:52. > :46:59.That is the face of a man who thinks he has one, I think. Has gone a bit

:47:00. > :47:08.flat and is waiting for someone to give him a spark. No improvement.

:47:09. > :47:11.His only other valid score. Let's show you how the 400 metres affected

:47:12. > :47:41.the decathlon. Just coming through the finish line

:47:42. > :47:49.with 21 laps left. 3.23, the first lap. If they kept that pace the

:47:50. > :47:57.whole way, they wouldn't be far off 34 minutes. They have picked up the

:47:58. > :48:09.pace since then. Everybody fairly comfortable in these early stages,

:48:10. > :48:14.as you would expect. Just going back to racing 10,000 metres, it is so

:48:15. > :48:20.different. Most athletes, because they get so few chances to race,

:48:21. > :48:27.they get in races with pacemakers, so it is either running as fast as

:48:28. > :48:31.they can to qualify, and then they qualify and the next time they run,

:48:32. > :48:38.they are running a tactical race like this? If you look at them, they

:48:39. > :48:45.have different motives. Fionnuala Britton from Ireland, she is always

:48:46. > :48:51.near the front. When she runs with athletes of this calibre, she is

:48:52. > :48:57.always close to the front in Cross Country and close to the front in a

:48:58. > :49:03.road race. And in the track, they are counting the laps. Literally

:49:04. > :49:19.right next to Fionnuala Britton is the reigning European cross country

:49:20. > :49:23.champion, Duarte. If this was a cross-country race, they would be at

:49:24. > :49:29.the front. You always attack a cross-country race a bit more, you

:49:30. > :49:39.would not get them waiting for the rest of the field. They would not

:49:40. > :49:44.set of thinking about keeping all of the runners together. But on the

:49:45. > :49:50.track, it is a different mentality and you have to be patient, you have

:49:51. > :49:57.to wait until other people make a move and you cover it if you want

:49:58. > :50:12.to. It is interesting to watch the kind of machinations they go through

:50:13. > :50:17.in their minds. Look at Prokopcuka. She is very comfortable leading when

:50:18. > :50:26.she runs on the roads. These athletes run very few 10,000 metres

:50:27. > :50:33.track races, they run 10,000 metres road racers and occasionally

:50:34. > :50:42.marathons and cross-country. But there is Felix of Portugal, settling

:50:43. > :50:47.down nicely. Jo has been up and down. Jo Pavey of Great Britain

:50:48. > :50:55.moving on the outside. Every time I look, she is slipping on the

:50:56. > :51:07.outside, overtaking, she has not settled into this race yet. Not sure

:51:08. > :51:26.she is enjoying running behind GIB fast and Berg of the Netherlands. --

:51:27. > :51:41.Vastenburg. The Belgian, has been running for a few years now. If you

:51:42. > :51:45.analyse this, you have the reigning champion on the inside, in the green

:51:46. > :51:52.of their star Portugal. Jo Pavey, runner-up in the European last time.

:51:53. > :51:57.You have the reigning European cross-country champion, Duarte in

:51:58. > :52:02.the middle. Then you have the newly Britton next to her. You have Sarah

:52:03. > :52:11.Marrero of Portugal upside her team-mate. Then you have a powerful

:52:12. > :52:16.Russian athlete, two Russian athletes, both have run well

:52:17. > :52:25.recently in the Russian Championships. It is moving on a

:52:26. > :52:31.little bit. Little gaps appearing. Jo Pavey is on the outside running

:52:32. > :52:36.along way round. But when it gets faster, she needs to be on the

:52:37. > :52:47.inside. She has not settled. Get yourself a position, and settle into

:52:48. > :53:02.it. Pace is not changing that much. 3.16 for the second kilometre. So it

:53:03. > :53:09.is staying about the same. Jo Pavey enjoying this at the moment. Nobody

:53:10. > :53:27.attempting to break this field up. Just been watching Calvin. She is a

:53:28. > :53:39.good friend of Duarte. She is a danger. She finished second in the

:53:40. > :53:52.French 1500 metre Championships. She is embarking on a new 10,000 metre

:53:53. > :54:00.career. She is an athlete not frightened of the distance yet.

:54:01. > :54:09.Doesn't have the experience yet. But just the one race where she beat

:54:10. > :54:14.many of the women in this field. She must be a danger. 16 laps to go in

:54:15. > :54:39.this 10,000 metre final. Moving up quickly on the outside for the first

:54:40. > :54:49.time, into the lead, is Belete. There is Sarah Marrero. Of Portugal.

:54:50. > :55:08.I think the pace is picking up a little. Just that little move has

:55:09. > :55:15.shaken everything up. It is just all starting to bunch a bit. There was a

:55:16. > :55:27.little bit of pace, now they have slowed a bit. Jo Pavey allows Duarte

:55:28. > :55:35.and Calvin. Stipe Zunic, can he get into the medals? Looks as though

:55:36. > :55:39.that will be his best of the evening and it is fourth place. Agonising.

:55:40. > :55:51.Happy to have thrown his best ever. Skips across. 23 years of age. Just

:55:52. > :55:58.saved that. What will it take to get into the medals? Always a horrible

:55:59. > :56:17.position but fourth place is confirmed. Lifetime best. The medals

:56:18. > :56:26.have been decided. Tomas Mejias ski, can he use the impetus to get past

:56:27. > :56:30.21 metres? Did he say that? Shy of the 21 metre line. It looks like a

:56:31. > :56:33.big man will have to resign himself to a bronze medal. The medal

:56:34. > :56:45.positions have not changed since the second round. 20.83, 32 years of

:56:46. > :56:57.age. Looks like no improvement. Shake of the head. Decent series but

:56:58. > :57:08.third place it is. What do you do? What can this man do? The tall

:57:09. > :57:13.Spaniard is the only man left to stop David Storl taking the gold

:57:14. > :57:21.medal. You know it is the last throw, you gather every bit of

:57:22. > :57:32.energy you possibly can. 6'7" tall. Was not to be. David Storl has taken

:57:33. > :57:38.the gold medal. It is gold for the Spaniard. There is David Storl. He

:57:39. > :57:42.just squashed the competition. Looks like he will have his last throw

:57:43. > :57:49.anyway. But it is a gold medal for Germany. The first medal to be

:57:50. > :57:56.decided in the European Championships, goes to David Storl

:57:57. > :58:01.of Germany. That was no surprise. David Storl dominant in the shot

:58:02. > :58:08.put, winning Germany's first goal medal, the first of these European

:58:09. > :58:16.Championships. The first one on the track is a long way from being

:58:17. > :58:31.decided. They ran 3.23 for the first kilometre, then they ran 3.16, 3.16,

:58:32. > :58:43.3.16. 12 dropping off, but not too many. Most of them comfortable. --

:58:44. > :58:54.one or two. Now the race plans can evolve. Get to the halfway point,

:58:55. > :59:05.see how you are going. They are all connected together. Only a few of

:59:06. > :59:14.them have dropped off. Jarzynska leading. Jo Pavey making her move

:59:15. > :59:20.behind Duarte, the cross-country champion. 12 laps to go and they are

:59:21. > :59:28.all joined together. Nobody is brave enough just yet. 12 laps to go is a

:59:29. > :59:38.long way. You wait until it gets down to seven or eight. Six or five

:59:39. > :59:42.is better, but seven or eight is OK. Just starting to shake it up a

:59:43. > :59:48.little bit. The newly Britton and Jo Pavey watching what is going on at

:59:49. > :59:53.the front. Two Spaniards at the back of the group. The Russian looking a

:59:54. > :00:05.little bit uncomfortable at the back of the group. Everybody else is

:00:06. > :00:11.clicking off, 78, 77, 79, nothing to tax the better athletes so far.

:00:12. > :00:15.Fatigue will be building slowly now. When you do get a fast lap, it will

:00:16. > :00:23.be interesting to see who will go with it. As you said, when fatigue

:00:24. > :00:29.is building, the mental preparations and the mental rehearsals and the

:00:30. > :00:35.race plans go out of the window. Some of them stay with the resolve.

:00:36. > :00:42.Some of them come with a plan, and when they feel tired with 11 laps to

:00:43. > :00:50.go, the plan goes out of the window. We will look in the next few laps to

:00:51. > :00:55.see if anybody has a strong race plan. One by one, the group just

:00:56. > :01:02.breaking up. Even though the pace is not significant. There is a move by

:01:03. > :01:17.pitch champion. Dulce Felix. Every time we look at

:01:18. > :01:22.the front, we see something happening, and when I look back at

:01:23. > :01:27.Jo Pavey, she is always passing somebody. I would like to see her

:01:28. > :01:33.move up half a dozen places, because the big names are at the front.

:01:34. > :01:41.Almensch Belete is there. Ana Dulce Felix. She realises the danger, and

:01:42. > :01:48.Jo Pavey says, I can sense somebody is getting itchy. Clemence Calvin

:01:49. > :01:56.and Sophie Duarte and Sara Moreira are there, with Ana Dulce Felix.

:01:57. > :02:07.Fionnuala Britton following the British athletes through. Jip

:02:08. > :02:12.Vastenburg looking around. Ana Dulce Felix said, OK, I will go back

:02:13. > :02:14.inside. But that was the first nibble at trying to push things on.

:02:15. > :02:29.But now, as you well. I do not know why she looked at the

:02:30. > :02:35.school board their! Almensch Belete hits the front, but it is far too

:02:36. > :02:40.easy in a race like this to make a long run for home. Every move is

:02:41. > :02:49.being covered, but nobody is responding, nobody is leading on

:02:50. > :02:55.from it. There is Sophie Duarte. She went the cross-country in December.

:02:56. > :03:02.On the inside again, Ana Dulce Felix of Portugal. The champion moving

:03:03. > :03:09.closer to the front. Jo Pavey has found a place on the inside, I am

:03:10. > :03:14.pleased to see that. Yes, normally. I would like her to keep an eye.

:03:15. > :03:21.Plenty of laps, if somebody makes a move, you do not have to panic. Once

:03:22. > :03:29.more, Jip Vastenburg wanting to see her name on the screen. Almensch

:03:30. > :03:36.Belete has lost the lead for now, Clemence Calvin wants to be near the

:03:37. > :03:41.front. She is having a great season. Sophie Duarte on the outside. The

:03:42. > :03:47.other Portuguese athlete on the curb. Beth Potter moving up a bit.

:03:48. > :03:53.Jo Pavey is towards the back of the lead group. While it is slow, that

:03:54. > :03:58.is OK, but if somebody makes a dart, she will have some ground to make

:03:59. > :04:03.up. She is fine at the moment. You have to admire their consistency,

:04:04. > :04:10.another free: 16 for the last kilometre. It has been a metronomic

:04:11. > :04:19.pace. Not wearing them down too much at this point. Beth Potter is going

:04:20. > :04:24.well, and Jo Pavey passing athlete. She has been up and down the field,

:04:25. > :04:27.but it does not really matter. We are now getting to the serious end

:04:28. > :04:31.of the race, somebody will make a long run for home. You have got to

:04:32. > :04:39.be close, you do not want to give them a start. Fionnuala Britton is

:04:40. > :04:42.right at the back of the group. The champion trying to stretch it out,

:04:43. > :04:47.she looks as though she has got something in her legs, when she hits

:04:48. > :04:52.the front, she is opening up a few yards. Beth Potter just ahead of Jo

:04:53. > :05:00.Pavey, they have been through the Commonwealth Games. Beth Potter did

:05:01. > :05:05.the 5000 and 10,000 metres. Jo Pavey ran an essentially in the 5000

:05:06. > :05:09.metres. For the rest of them, they have been preparing for these

:05:10. > :05:14.championships. The British athletes have been in the Commonwealth Games.

:05:15. > :05:20.It is sometimes a handicap, it is easier to run just one championship.

:05:21. > :05:25.It is harder to run twice. The experienced marathon runner, twice

:05:26. > :05:30.winner of the New York Marathon, hit the front for the first time. She

:05:31. > :05:35.seized the comfortable signs, seven laps to go, a mile and three

:05:36. > :05:43.quarters, she knows what that feels like. It was at this point, 3000

:05:44. > :05:49.metres to go, two years ago, Ana Dulce Felix forced it on and managed

:05:50. > :05:53.to drop Jo Pavey. Maybe Jo Pavey remembers that, because she moves

:05:54. > :06:01.close. It was a different race, there was not this the group and all

:06:02. > :06:08.of these athletes in contention. Beth Potter and Jo Pavey are there.

:06:09. > :06:12.Just keeping an eye on things. Fionnuala Britton at the back of the

:06:13. > :06:22.leading group. We have not seen too much of her. She has to take a

:06:23. > :06:29.couple of steps inside, that is OK, she does not get an advantage. You

:06:30. > :06:32.can feel the anxiety building. You can feel the tension growing, that

:06:33. > :06:38.something has got to give pretty quickly. Somebody has got to push on

:06:39. > :06:45.and try to break up the group. The British athletes have run well, Beth

:06:46. > :06:50.Potter has equipped -- acquitted herself extremely well after the

:06:51. > :06:56.Commonwealth Games. There she is, closing up on Sophie Duarte and the

:06:57. > :07:02.leaders. Behind her, Jo Pavey. Six laps to go. It is time to get

:07:03. > :07:08.serious. Starting to think about a race plan. These athletes in this

:07:09. > :07:14.group, one or two of them are going to stay and stick with the resolve

:07:15. > :07:20.coaches and they have agreed, make the one for home at the time they

:07:21. > :07:24.decide. Clemence Calvin is dangerous in second place, she ran the 3000

:07:25. > :07:32.metres at the European Team Championships, and it is less than

:07:33. > :07:37.that distance to go now. She acquitted herself reasonably well.

:07:38. > :07:41.She has got a bit of pace, but it might not be enough to hold off the

:07:42. > :07:46.others. She looks as though she is ready to go. It looks as though she

:07:47. > :07:51.feels as though she wants to force it, but she does not have the

:07:52. > :07:58.courage yet. Ana Dulce Felix, lots of experience on the inside. Jo

:07:59. > :08:03.Pavey slots in towards the back of the group. At this point, I would

:08:04. > :08:09.like to see her being a bit closer to the front, because once we get to

:08:10. > :08:13.five laps to go, for laps to go, you have got to work hard to get 50

:08:14. > :08:21.metres back. Sophie Duarte is pulling out. She has a problem, it

:08:22. > :08:29.looks like a hamstring. That is her race over. She takes no further

:08:30. > :08:35.part. The group that we are looking at, there are too many. The

:08:36. > :08:41.Portuguese athlete look strong. Jo Pavey and Beth Potter looking good.

:08:42. > :08:47.Fionnuala Britton is still in contention. We see them running so

:08:48. > :08:54.often on the roads, and on the country, and in marathons, and

:08:55. > :08:58.shorter distances. I would not know who is the fastest sprinter, occurs

:08:59. > :09:03.you do not often see them in a position where they are sprinting

:09:04. > :09:08.for the finish. When they looked around at the 200 meter point, there

:09:09. > :09:14.are too many for comfort, it is time to start making decisions. Blood

:09:15. > :09:20.streaming down the legs of the German, she has been spiked already.

:09:21. > :09:24.Look at the pushing and shoving. They have to be careful. Something

:09:25. > :09:31.has got to give. Clemence Calvin is slowing it up. She wants to control

:09:32. > :09:33.it. For laps to go. Jo Pavey moving up on the inside, sensing the

:09:34. > :09:53.danger. Almensch Belete at the back of the

:09:54. > :09:54.group, a bit of pace. Fionnuala Britton still has a chance, and Beth

:09:55. > :10:11.Potter. There is Jo Pavey, sitting, waiting.

:10:12. > :10:17.Jip Vastenburg, the tall Dutch figure, you are going to have to run

:10:18. > :10:24.wide to get around her. Three and a half laps to go. This is the closest

:10:25. > :10:30.Jo Pavey has been to the leader. A lot of British fans in the stadium,

:10:31. > :10:34.a lot of us watching Jo Pavey run so magnificently at the Commonwealth

:10:35. > :10:40.Games in the 5000 metres. When she comes into the straight, she will

:10:41. > :10:45.look up and see three laps to go. She was second last time. The

:10:46. > :10:51.champion is ahead of her, she looks to be ready to go. She hits the

:10:52. > :10:56.front. Ana Dulce Felix of Portugal. And her team-mate, Sara Moreira.

:10:57. > :11:04.Three laps to go. They are making a move. The two French women, the two
