:00:46. > :00:53.A very good morning to all of you from all of us. This summer of sport

:00:54. > :01:00.just keeps on giving. Now it is time for the European Atletico to take

:01:01. > :01:08.centre stage. This place in zero is best known for the Weltklasse. It is

:01:09. > :01:10.time for this place to show champions and create champions.

:01:11. > :01:11.European champions of which Britain has had quite a few through the

:01:12. > :01:33.years. Well done Fatima Whitbread. Waite it

:01:34. > :01:38.is fast, long and high, a massive throw. Jonathan Edwards becomes

:01:39. > :01:47.European champion. Roger black takes gold for Britain.

:01:48. > :01:55.Daley Thompson, European champion. Jessica Ennis-Hill confirm in his

:01:56. > :02:05.status as the very best. -- confirming her status. Magnificent.

:02:06. > :02:21.Denise Lewis, the new champion. Mo Farah does it again. STUDIO: Some

:02:22. > :02:33.great memories. After dropping out of the Commonwealth Games, Mo Farah

:02:34. > :02:35.is here in 08. -- Zurich. You all featured in those memories of

:02:36. > :02:45.European Championships. I liked your hair Denise! Great memories. It was

:02:46. > :02:49.a great Championships. We were always strong and competitive and I

:02:50. > :02:59.always had to be at my best. The challenge for the athletes, two

:03:00. > :03:03.Championships so close together. Ten and 11 days between the end of one

:03:04. > :03:08.and the start of the next one. It is hard because you have to manage the

:03:09. > :03:12.two peaks and get ready for one and if you did really well, get over

:03:13. > :03:17.that high and get ready to come back and treat this as a fresh one. If

:03:18. > :03:23.you did not go well in Glasgow, come into this on the rebound with some

:03:24. > :03:32.way to make amends. It did not go too well for you in Manchester,

:03:33. > :03:38.Colin? You are spot on Paula, I had to change my approach after running

:03:39. > :03:45.disappointingly in Manchester 2002. I had to bounce back, only ten days

:03:46. > :03:50.to try to defend my European title. It is never easy doing Championships

:03:51. > :03:53.back to back. It is day one and it is a busy morning and this is what

:03:54. > :04:11.is coming up. Hannah England, Laura Muir and Laura

:04:12. > :04:15.Weightman will be in this. Not quite such a good experience for Goldie

:04:16. > :04:22.Sayers. She is the captain and says she is in great shape.

:04:23. > :04:30.This is Matthew Hudson-Smith. He goes in the individual event after a

:04:31. > :04:36.great relay leg in Glasgow. Breakfast with Tiffany just about

:04:37. > :04:41.lunch time with the heats of the women's 100-metre hurdles. And this

:04:42. > :05:22.is the timetable. Lots to look forward to. Paul,

:05:23. > :05:31.particularly, the women's 1500 metres, after what was a very tough

:05:32. > :05:36.event in the Commonwealth. This is a really tough event. There is not an

:05:37. > :05:44.easier option, they were up against the Kenyan girls in Glasgow and they

:05:45. > :05:49.are up against the Ethiopians today. It will be a tough event. It will be

:05:50. > :05:58.tough even to qualify today but the girls are in great shape, Laura Muir

:05:59. > :06:03.and Hannah Weightman. They have been really buoyed, Hannah Weightman,

:06:04. > :06:12.particularly by the silver medal in Glasgow. Hopefully, Laura Muir has

:06:13. > :06:20.managed to put itself back together mentally because she is in great

:06:21. > :06:24.shape. We will focus on the mend's decathlon, let's hear from our

:06:25. > :06:35.British competitor. My name is Ashley Bryant and I am doing the

:06:36. > :06:39.mend's decathlon. I was very happy, I did not go there to score big but

:06:40. > :06:46.I am in great shape so I want the points to reflect the shape I am in.

:06:47. > :06:50.Hopefully I can now relax and put the score down. How does your body

:06:51. > :06:56.feel post Commonwealth Games? What is the shortest gap you have had in

:06:57. > :07:03.between the Catalans before? Three weeks is the shortest. That one week

:07:04. > :07:08.does make a difference. I had worked for that. Long and physically it was

:07:09. > :07:15.hard. You will be tired at the end of the day, it is a decathlon. When

:07:16. > :07:23.it comes to British heritage in a decathlon, we looked at Dean Macey

:07:24. > :07:28.and Daley Thompson. Are you inspired by the history? I do not go back and

:07:29. > :07:32.look at the statistics. But you see the videos and you see what they

:07:33. > :07:40.achieved. I want to get up to those schools. -- scores. It will take a

:07:41. > :07:46.few years for me to even think about being where they were. But it is a

:07:47. > :07:53.maturing event. I definitely think it is possible to get up to the

:07:54. > :08:00.mid-8 thousands. It is not easy to be here at all? Jemma there have not

:08:01. > :08:13.been many people scoring 8000 in Britain. Standards have gone up. To

:08:14. > :08:18.be the only decathlete here is good. Let's go and put down the big

:08:19. > :08:26.scores. The places will take care of themselves. Ashley Bryant getting

:08:27. > :08:31.ready for this first event. Denise, we talked about the challenge of

:08:32. > :08:35.back-to-back championships, the hardest fought decathletes.

:08:36. > :08:45.Absolutely, they are on the track. Many athletes. -- they are on the

:08:46. > :08:51.track for so many hours. But Ashley Bryant is ready and he knows this

:08:52. > :08:54.championship is wide in decathlon. They are a handful of athletes out

:08:55. > :09:02.there who are very much capable of scoring well. He needs to be at his

:09:03. > :09:08.best and make sure he gets his championship to a great start.

:09:09. > :09:11.Realistically, he is looking at a score rather than a medal which is a

:09:12. > :09:18.different mindset to what he had in the Commonwealth Games. He has not

:09:19. > :09:21.been over 8000 point many times in his career and you need to really

:09:22. > :09:25.establish yourself as a true performer and get it up to those

:09:26. > :09:31.high marks to give you a fighting chance at this level. He knows that.

:09:32. > :09:38.It is time to make that step. Make that transferrin is into those

:09:39. > :09:46.finals. -- transference into those finals. Steve Cram, Steve Backley

:09:47. > :09:57.and festival Andrew Cotter in the commentary box. COMMENTATOR: Welcome

:09:58. > :10:02.to a very sunny stadium. It is a little colder than it has been the

:10:03. > :10:09.last few days. Heavy rain yesterday. Very happy the weather is nice today

:10:10. > :10:15.and conditions just about perfect. The ground slowly filling up. We

:10:16. > :10:24.have become used, certainly in the Commonwealth Games and Olympic

:10:25. > :10:36.Games, to see sessions fall. -- full.

:10:37. > :10:45.To put things in perspective, he had such success in the Commonwealth

:10:46. > :10:49.Games. European decathlon is stronger than Commonwealth the

:10:50. > :10:56.catalogue? It is. This is an opportunity for Ashley Bryant. It

:10:57. > :11:01.was not a great performance for him in terms of the hijab and the long

:11:02. > :11:09.jump and hurdles, he hit every hurdle. -- terms of the high jump.

:11:10. > :11:12.Should he go below 11 seconds, and get off to a better start than he

:11:13. > :11:20.did in the Commonwealth Games, who knows? The Hungarian in this is 37

:11:21. > :11:39.now. Former world bronze-medallist. Good conditions for sprinting.

:11:40. > :11:43.Pretty much flat calm. For all of these athletes, it is about getting

:11:44. > :11:50.off to a good start and challenging your personal best. Two more heats

:11:51. > :12:14.to come after this. We shall see how Ashley Bryant fares.

:12:15. > :12:26.The Estonian comes through on the far side. Not quite as Ashley Bryant

:12:27. > :12:32.would have been hoping for. A little bit disappointed perhaps. Not the

:12:33. > :12:36.start we would have hoped for. He ran 11.1 in Glasgow two weeks ago.

:12:37. > :12:45.He looked like he might be over striding here. Towards the end.

:12:46. > :12:51.Almost bounding along. Outside of 11.3, 11.4, not quite enough for the

:12:52. > :12:54.start he would have hoped. He will have to do a lifetime best to get

:12:55. > :12:59.amongst the medals here. No doubt about that. He needs performances

:13:00. > :13:14.beyond his lifetime best and that is not one of them.

:13:15. > :13:24.A busy start to the field of events. Very busy, somewhat 50 athletes

:13:25. > :13:49.involved. Combination of pol falters.

:13:50. > :14:34.Look out for Tomasz Majewski and David Storl, the defending champion.

:14:35. > :14:42.He has just gone beyond the yellow line, I don't think he fouled,

:14:43. > :14:47.that'll advance him into this afternoon's final. Looked quick

:14:48. > :14:50.across the final. Always tough coming into the morning

:14:51. > :14:55.qualification for every athlete. It is the start of the championship and

:14:56. > :15:00.you have to get off with a bang. Which is what the bog area and has

:15:01. > :15:07.done. Automatic qualification. -- that is what the old dairy and --

:15:08. > :15:40.Bulgarian has done. events, unfortunately, but some of

:15:41. > :15:53.the best in the world will contest for medals later this afternoon.

:15:54. > :15:58.This is your favourite, defending champion. 6000 calories a day and

:15:59. > :16:10.has thrown just below 22 metres this year. That is shot technique. Very

:16:11. > :16:17.comfortably, 20 metres point -- 20.20. That is

:16:18. > :16:25.comfortably, 20 metres point -- 20.20. That clinical. Very

:16:26. > :16:38.comfortable for the German champion. He will go through to deny the's

:16:39. > :16:43.final also. -- to tonight's final. 20.76 metres, confirmation. Ashley

:16:44. > :17:02.Bryant is down there. After that is slightly disappointing

:17:03. > :17:09.first event for Ashley Bryant, he will be watching what happens in the

:17:10. > :17:26.rest of these 100 metre races. Van der Plaetsen in lane two.

:17:27. > :17:51.25 years of age. Two Frenchmen in this. One of the quickest men in

:17:52. > :17:55.this second race here, Haslett. Just get used to some of the colour of

:17:56. > :18:02.the strips. Ashley Bryant was in the British strip, predominantly blue

:18:03. > :18:09.will stop a lot of blue out there, but it is micro-blue. A lot of blue

:18:10. > :18:13.out there, but it is helpful that the French are in the dark blue.

:18:14. > :18:50.There is Meyer in lane three. A good first event for

:18:51. > :18:56.Sintnicolaas. We will get the first official time for that shortly. A

:18:57. > :19:04.good first event for him. There is a lot of talk about this track, that

:19:05. > :19:11.it was going to be very fast. Into the breeze that does not help. The

:19:12. > :19:21.headwind is possibly canceling that out. It is all to do with the

:19:22. > :19:29.coefficient of restitution. Kevin Meyer of France in second place,

:19:30. > :19:39.looking very good. He is Nancy's -- fancied as one of the contenders for

:19:40. > :19:45.goal here. This is Majewski of Poland, his first attempt to get

:19:46. > :19:54.through to tonight's final. The old men of the competition. Looking like

:19:55. > :20:03.a youngster. Watch out for this men, he has a handy knack of getting it

:20:04. > :20:08.right at the major championship. He will be the dark horse for many

:20:09. > :20:15.people. He might need the stimulus of a European title, it will just

:20:16. > :20:26.flow through his veins. The course of the final later. He will be in

:20:27. > :20:33.the mix, without a doubt. Bucki of France, 23 years of age. He has not

:20:34. > :20:41.managed over 20 metres this year, his lifetime best. It does go beyond

:20:42. > :20:48.the 20 metres. The yellow line is the automatic qualification. They

:20:49. > :20:59.will all go through to the final if they go over 12. A maximum of 12. A

:21:00. > :21:04.season best in qualification for the Frenchmen.

:21:05. > :21:16.Shy of the automatic. We will have to wait and see. Sintnicolaas with a

:21:17. > :21:25.season best. That is his best so far this year. Kevin Meyer, just outside

:21:26. > :21:38.his personal best. The top three in heats to. -- heat two. How did you

:21:39. > :21:44.find it? You are only as good as it your performance. A little bit down

:21:45. > :21:51.in the 100. I and not too disappointed, it is a decent start.

:21:52. > :22:02.You had just done a decathlon in Glasgow. I have never turned around

:22:03. > :22:06.that quick, three weeks. Everyone can appreciate how you feel after a

:22:07. > :22:12.decathlon. I would not turn up if eye was not ready to go and perform

:22:13. > :22:18.well. We have talked about the contrast between a full stadium in

:22:19. > :22:22.Glasgow, it shows how great the British fans have been at home. You

:22:23. > :22:38.would not want any more than Glasgow. The stadium was perfect.

:22:39. > :22:51.The stadium was perfect. They. -- the fans were perfect. Qualification

:22:52. > :22:58.continues. A personal best of 21.40 metres for the Russian champion and

:22:59. > :23:05.this season. That was all over the place. The shot seemed to slip away

:23:06. > :23:12.from the neck and that is connect, that is -- disconnect, that is not

:23:13. > :23:15.the start he would have wanted. Maybe he is feeling at the nerves

:23:16. > :23:22.and what it means it to be in a European Championship. He will have

:23:23. > :23:41.two more attempt to advance and improve on that performance. To the

:23:42. > :23:56.third heat of the 100 metres. The German is in lane three.

:23:57. > :24:03.It is the season best times which get these men into the quickest

:24:04. > :24:18.heats. All of these men have gone below 11 seconds this season. Strong

:24:19. > :24:19.competition from Kazmirek. He is a good bit quicker than anybody else

:24:20. > :24:42.in this race. Not the strongest of the German

:24:43. > :24:54.contingent there. Distelberger of Austria in lane eight. And Rietveld

:24:55. > :25:03.making of the line-up, from the Netherlands. Over 8200 point this

:25:04. > :25:18.season. A very strong line-up, but in terms of times, the German, whose

:25:19. > :25:26.father was a very good athlete, he would have competed against Daley

:25:27. > :25:33.Thompson, but for the East German, it is left up to the West German. He

:25:34. > :25:46.is an upstanding athlete. The third heat of the 100 metres in

:25:47. > :26:12.the decathlon. Give them one chance to make that

:26:13. > :26:23.false start. It is difficult to tell who was at fault there. It might

:26:24. > :26:31.have been Freimuth. His reaction time is 0.021. Anything below

:26:32. > :26:38.0.1... There is a twitch from him, first of all. The two Germans have

:26:39. > :26:43.been drawn side-by-side. I think that is helping in terms of getting

:26:44. > :26:48.a decent time in year at the start of this decathlon. The European

:26:49. > :26:55.leader, Kazmirek, possibly being dragged along by the favourite for

:26:56. > :27:02.this final heat. It is a perfect situation for the European leader.

:27:03. > :27:11.We saw in the Commonwealth Games, the Australian athletes

:27:12. > :27:14.double-faulted, two false starts. You can carry on competing but you

:27:15. > :27:18.will not be competing in the overall reckoning, so Freimuth just has to

:27:19. > :27:53.be careful here. Ready to go again. Freimuth doing the very least that

:27:54. > :27:58.he would have expected there. Eventually picking up and coming

:27:59. > :28:09.through to win it. Anywhere near his season 's best, I do not think it

:28:10. > :28:19.is. Kazmirek looking very strong to his best. It has been given as a

:28:20. > :28:37.personal best, Kazmirek. Freimuth was not up to the caliber

:28:38. > :28:50.of Daley Thompson, but running very well next to his patronage. --

:28:51. > :28:57.compatriot. Off and running, at least, into a very strong wind as

:28:58. > :29:01.well. Kazmirek with a personal best, which is what you are looking for in

:29:02. > :29:14.a decathlon. Target your personal best and move on.

:29:15. > :29:19.Ashley, you said you thought he looked a little bit tired, but he

:29:20. > :29:25.seems to be reasonably happy. You have to tell yourself you feel

:29:26. > :29:29.great, because it is a mental battle through these days, and I thought he

:29:30. > :29:33.looked a bit heavy legged, and nobody could really criticise him,

:29:34. > :29:39.because it is such a tough turnaround to do this event. He just

:29:40. > :29:47.looked not as fresh as he did in Glasgow, as you would expect. A bit

:29:48. > :29:58.of Chad about the track. -- a bit of talk about the track. It is quite

:29:59. > :30:03.soft and they wanted to get maximum rebound and not get stuck in the

:30:04. > :30:13.track before they take off. You want to get as much energy transference

:30:14. > :30:22.back to the athlete. Laura Muir has something to prove after a very

:30:23. > :30:30.disappointing games. I just wanted to finally put to rest exec at what

:30:31. > :30:35.happened in the 1,500 metres. It was the tiny is the eclipse from someone

:30:36. > :30:39.behind me. I lost my footing. I watched it back and was thinking

:30:40. > :30:44.that I was in the right place at the right time. I did what I wanted to

:30:45. > :30:50.do and they cannot control what happens behind me. It could happen

:30:51. > :30:54.again but I hope it does not. It was pretty heartbreaking. I work for it

:30:55. > :30:59.for years and it meant everything to me. It was difficult. My coach told

:31:00. > :31:03.me I could have a day off the next day but I went back to training.

:31:04. > :31:14.These things happened and I hope this time around I can get clear of

:31:15. > :31:17.it. Paula, she will obviously be very focused here but her main thing

:31:18. > :31:22.was to do well in the Commonwealth Games in front of a home crowd.

:31:23. > :31:27.Exactly and as she said, she did nothing wrong in that race. She

:31:28. > :31:31.cannot control what happened behind her. She needed to come away and

:31:32. > :31:37.mentally pick herself up because physically, she is in a very good

:31:38. > :31:41.shape. She has a chance to come back and redeem herself but it is how

:31:42. > :31:47.well mentally she has picked herself up from that. What happened to Laura

:31:48. > :31:54.Weightman could easily have happened to Laura Muir because they were in

:31:55. > :31:58.very similar shape. Exactly. You are spot on, the most important thing is

:31:59. > :32:01.that she realised she worked really hard in the winter to come through

:32:02. > :32:06.and be in the position she is in today. She has to not get down on

:32:07. > :32:09.herself after the Commonwealth Games, she has to keep a positive

:32:10. > :32:16.mindset because she can perform very well. The opposite problem, if you

:32:17. > :32:22.like, for Laura Weightman, although it is not a problem, she is coming

:32:23. > :32:27.off a massive high. It is how you manage that elation. Getting

:32:28. > :32:32.yourself fresh and ready to do this again and repeat. It is a great

:32:33. > :32:37.opportunity for both of these girls to mix it up and get into the

:32:38. > :32:41.medals. Laura Muir, I think she has to prove to herself she can do it in

:32:42. > :32:46.finals because she has been unfortunate to have these incidents

:32:47. > :32:50.when it really matters. It has happened in doors and in the

:32:51. > :33:01.Commonwealth Games. The real test is on this young lady, Laura Muir.

:33:02. > :33:06.Behind the favourite of Sweden. I think Hassan comes in with a little

:33:07. > :33:12.more edge. They are the two they are aiming at staying with. Laura Muir

:33:13. > :33:22.can look at Laura Weightman's run and say, I am right with her and as

:33:23. > :33:26.good as she is. They will have the feeling they belong in this company

:33:27. > :33:30.and that they can come here and negotiate the heats safely and think

:33:31. > :33:38.about getting medals. Steve Cram will be commentating in this. We can

:33:39. > :33:45.talk to him now. Steve, a very big moment for Laura Muir. It is when

:33:46. > :33:48.you find out what you are made of. She was hugely unfortunate. She is a

:33:49. > :33:53.great acting and having a great season. I saw her come into the

:33:54. > :33:59.stadium with her coach Andy after that night she had fallen and it was

:34:00. > :34:03.good of her to come back. It was good what Andy did with her and get

:34:04. > :34:09.immersed back into it. I had a chat. I think you have to put things

:34:10. > :34:14.like that behind you. She is in great shape. Like Laura Weightman

:34:15. > :34:20.and Hannah as well, coming into these champions, knowing it will be

:34:21. > :34:24.tough. But they are in a position where they might be looking at a

:34:25. > :34:30.medal. She knows how the hard work she has put in. She is running well

:34:31. > :34:34.and she has every chance of running well. They have to negotiate these

:34:35. > :34:40.tough heats first and then they can look forward to the final on Friday.

:34:41. > :34:45.Laura Weightman, you coached here, when you sat down with her, how did

:34:46. > :34:52.you prioritise these two championships? Was Commonwealth more

:34:53. > :34:56.important? I don't think we prioritised one over the other.

:34:57. > :35:03.There was too short a gap between them. We said that she should try to

:35:04. > :35:07.qualify first of all. Getting into the team was not going to be

:35:08. > :35:14.straightforward. We decided not to put all of our eggs into an early

:35:15. > :35:19.basket. You get yourself in shape when championships are so close

:35:20. > :35:22.together and it is great to win a silver medal in the first one

:35:23. > :35:29.because you come to this one full of confidence. It would not have been

:35:30. > :35:41.as easy a job if that had not happened. Let's talk about the way

:35:42. > :35:45.the energy is returned, Steve Cram mentioned it. Can it make a

:35:46. > :35:54.difference? I would like to think so. This track surface has quick

:35:55. > :35:58.times and jumping, you get that rebound off the track and you always

:35:59. > :36:02.feel like you are floating, you do not expend energy going down into

:36:03. > :36:09.the floor. This track, they have made modifications. People seem to

:36:10. > :36:15.like it. Interesting to see how the hurdlers handle it. These 1500 metre

:36:16. > :36:25.runners will not have the same problem. Let's get back to Steve

:36:26. > :36:32.Cram. Laura Muir in this first heat, essentially a semifinal.

:36:33. > :36:35.The first heat has Laura Muir against one of the gold medal

:36:36. > :36:59.favourites. To be fair, if Laura conducts

:37:00. > :37:06.herself as she has done for most of her season, she should be fine. It

:37:07. > :37:13.is always difficult on a morning. It was Mr Buckley who went for that

:37:14. > :37:17.phrase. The warmer track is downtown and they have had to get up early

:37:18. > :37:22.and go from there hotels and go to the warm up track downtown and do

:37:23. > :37:28.that and then come on a bus to the track here and doing little more

:37:29. > :37:31.warm up downstairs. This first morning, everybody getting use to

:37:32. > :37:37.those conditions, preparing for your race.

:37:38. > :37:43.This is not always the best time of the day to run at your best so you

:37:44. > :37:48.have to be mentally on top of things. I am sure Laura Muir and her

:37:49. > :37:52.coach will be putting Glasgow behind them. She will be hungrier than most

:37:53. > :38:12.to do well here. Good conditions. We think there is absolutely no wind

:38:13. > :38:21.here today. A good morning. Good morning to Brendan foster. We have

:38:22. > :38:36.two contrasting thoughts about the English and British athletes.

:38:37. > :38:43.Laura Muir is right in the middle of the pack running sensibly. The pace

:38:44. > :38:47.looks pretty easy and comfortable. But she is coming out of the Common

:38:48. > :38:49.of games with a bit of a burden. She did not finish well. -- the

:38:50. > :39:24.Commonwealth Games. They are all looking and watching

:39:25. > :39:33.for the favourite. A pretty dominant start to the year. You just do not

:39:34. > :39:48.panic. Laura needs to settle when things like that happen.

:39:49. > :40:22.The Russians have been quiet so far in 2014.

:40:23. > :40:35.Laura Muir giving herself a chance on the outside.

:40:36. > :40:52.Laura Muir breaking that long-standing Scottish record of Eva

:40:53. > :40:55.Marie's. You can see Aregawi, but I think Laura Muir is running a

:40:56. > :41:03.sensible race but she has to hold it. The whole field is beginning to

:41:04. > :41:11.gather. The Russian looking pretty good. Laura Muir is getting boxed a

:41:12. > :41:21.little bit. She is finding some room. They have to be careful here.

:41:22. > :41:25.Aregawi looking comfortable. Laura Muir has worked herself from a good

:41:26. > :41:30.position, coming down the home straight. Once again, she is finding

:41:31. > :41:35.the long way round. Now she has to go for it. Laura Muir will have to

:41:36. > :41:43.really be strong over the last 200 metres.

:41:44. > :41:52.The Ukrainian can finish quickly. Top four only will be guaranteed

:41:53. > :42:00.through to the final. Laura Muir has to find something in the home

:42:01. > :42:06.straight. Aregawi looks comfortable. These will be the first four to

:42:07. > :42:18.qualify easily. Laura Muir will finish in six place. Poor Laura

:42:19. > :42:23.Muir. She is not out yet but just look at her. She was all over the

:42:24. > :42:28.place. It is difficult in slow races, it is difficult to know where

:42:29. > :42:36.to put yourself. You just have to not panic and I think she did panic

:42:37. > :42:40.a little bit once or twice. It is pointless looking at times, you have

:42:41. > :42:44.to be in a good position and give yourself a chance in the last lap.

:42:45. > :42:47.She went from a good position to a bad position and had a lot to do and

:42:48. > :42:54.could not find enough in the last 200 metres. There is the

:42:55. > :43:02.disappointment for the moment. Aregawi controlling this race. Laura

:43:03. > :43:07.Muir is 10th there, having been much closer. Much easier and much more in

:43:08. > :43:13.the race. Now she is running long on the outside, weigh on the outside,

:43:14. > :43:17.the race happening in front of her. At this point, Laura Muir is coming

:43:18. > :43:24.down the back straight but look at Aregawi, just strolling. You would

:43:25. > :43:33.rather be where Aregawi is. Band where Laura Muir is. -- van where

:43:34. > :43:41.Laura Muir is. First four to qualify. And then the four fastest

:43:42. > :43:48.losers. She will be a very nervous bystander when it comes to watching

:43:49. > :43:53.the second heat. Aregawi looking in control and comfortable. She wins

:43:54. > :44:07.her first heat of the women's 1500. Laura Muir at that point giving

:44:08. > :44:13.herself... There is a little bit of a stumble, which is what happens in

:44:14. > :44:28.1500 metres. She looked as if she was accelerating there but she

:44:29. > :44:32.fades. Terzic alongside Aregawi. She was one of the favourites for the

:44:33. > :44:36.Commonwealth Games, Laura Muir, and she was so disappointed in that race

:44:37. > :44:38.and it is difficult to shake off disappointment in a race like that,

:44:39. > :44:55.especially in your hometown. You gave it your all but it was not

:44:56. > :44:57.the result you wanted? No. I was close a couple of times to falling.

:44:58. > :45:02.the result you wanted? No. I was close a I will have to wait until

:45:03. > :45:08.after the second race. What is it like when you are in that kind of a

:45:09. > :45:13.race, still gaining experience all the time, is it something you think

:45:14. > :45:18.you need to progress with, not to panic in certain situations? I

:45:19. > :45:31.thought I kept pretty cool but it was quite slow and it was bunched

:45:32. > :45:44.up. I am here to learn. This is Mike second year of competition -- my

:45:45. > :45:53.second year of competition. It is completely different when you are by

:45:54. > :45:58.yourself in single file. To have eight or nine people bunched up

:45:59. > :46:04.together, it is very different. I just have done enough to get

:46:05. > :46:12.through. We wish you well. Thank you. I think she knows the pace of

:46:13. > :46:17.that race makes it a long shot but she will still be in there for the

:46:18. > :46:25.final. We will look forward to the second heat.

:46:26. > :46:43.Laura Weightman, one of the top of four, quickest in Europe this year.

:46:44. > :46:51.Going quickly to the line. Hannah England goes here, along with Laura

:46:52. > :46:56.Weightman. Just an example of what can happen.

:46:57. > :47:05.The athletes become stretched out through the diamond league season,

:47:06. > :47:10.and championship racing is very different, very tactical at times.

:47:11. > :47:17.They know what time they have to look for here. Hannah England in

:47:18. > :47:21.second place. Laura Weightman back in about seventh or eighth place.

:47:22. > :47:39.The first four will go through automatically. They are already

:47:40. > :47:43.running as if they were they the -- they are already running. In much

:47:44. > :47:49.better race this time than the first round. There is Laura moving

:47:50. > :47:58.through. She had just seen Laura Muir. This is almost like a final.

:47:59. > :48:03.The final is on Friday. The fastest lap, 68 seconds. Hannah England is

:48:04. > :48:08.running well. Laura Weightman decides she wants to be a bit closer

:48:09. > :48:14.and that is good movement. The way they are moving, it looks as if the

:48:15. > :48:22.first four could easily, from this heat. The Polish champion does a bit

:48:23. > :48:28.of pace making on the circuit herself. She is helping the rest of

:48:29. > :48:36.them along. They are all in good positions at the moment. We talked

:48:37. > :48:41.about Hassan and Aregawi, the two standouts athletes this year.

:48:42. > :48:49.Assigned in the bright orange vest -- Hassan in the bright orange vest.

:48:50. > :48:57.The Albanian, we mentioned before, " or the with -- she is in close

:48:58. > :49:05.quarters. All in good positions at the moment. Hangeland likes running

:49:06. > :49:09.the shortest way around which the -- Hannah England likes running the

:49:10. > :49:11.shortest way around. Laura Weightman moving closely down the back

:49:12. > :49:19.straight. shortest way around. Laura Weightman

:49:20. > :49:25.moving closely down The EPO and the -- the Ethiopian athlete who is now

:49:26. > :49:29.running for Holland, she is moving. They all moved quickly, England

:49:30. > :49:34.moves quickly. Around the top bend, coming into the Straits. You have

:49:35. > :49:39.got to be careful now and make sure you do not lose a good position. The

:49:40. > :49:45.targets champion making a move on the outside will stop -- Turkish

:49:46. > :49:51.champion is making a move on the outside.

:49:52. > :50:06.They heat the bell. The sun looks good. This is the point in the race

:50:07. > :50:13.-- Hassan looks good. Hannah England is in a good position. A few

:50:14. > :50:24.athletes ahead of her, but she had to dig heat. England looks good and

:50:25. > :50:37.Laura Weightman still has a bit to do. Hannah England has been in a

:50:38. > :50:43.good position throughout the race. The Italian champion is in second

:50:44. > :50:55.place. Hassan out in front, controlling this. Look at the

:50:56. > :50:59.strength of the Dutch athlete there. Hannah England is going to have to

:51:00. > :51:06.wait and see. Weightman goes through automatically. Hannah England,

:51:07. > :51:11.despite being in fifth place, will go through as one of the fastest

:51:12. > :51:18.losers, I am sure. Both of the English athletes safely through. The

:51:19. > :51:29.pace of that one spells trouble. No further competition for Laura Muir.

:51:30. > :51:34.She used her head. That was a very impressive performance. The

:51:35. > :51:39.acceleration has already started. Look at Laura Weightman. She is

:51:40. > :51:49.running strongly now. The race has gathered and that suits her style.

:51:50. > :51:55.She looks to be more powerful, more strong in every sense, and doing

:51:56. > :51:59.enough. She knows the time is good enough but she wants to be in the

:52:00. > :52:07.first four. Hannah England goes through as the fastest loser. The

:52:08. > :52:13.difference between them, that is what the games gives you, she is

:52:14. > :52:26.running with confidence. That was a very good performance. Her coach did

:52:27. > :52:31.a great job. It is a good race. Laura Weightman goes through as an

:52:32. > :52:46.automatic qualifier. Not good news for Laura Muir. Laura and Hannah are

:52:47. > :52:51.with me. Well done. You came through with ease. It was a bit messy out

:52:52. > :52:57.there because it is so slow and everyone is pushing for positions. I

:52:58. > :53:03.stayed relaxed and came through that last 200 metres to get in the

:53:04. > :53:12.automatic spot. Knowing the first race was not so quick, what was your

:53:13. > :53:18.mindset? It was a decent pace. She did not make it a decent pace.

:53:19. > :53:28.Hassan made that the big move. It was an opportunity. I just try to

:53:29. > :53:33.feel good in the last 100. Did you feel good overall? I did. I have had

:53:34. > :53:40.time to recoup since the Commonwealth Games. I just try to

:53:41. > :53:44.stay in position. I went home after the Commonwealth Games and got out

:53:45. > :53:49.of that environment. I just wanted to go back to Leeds and chill out

:53:50. > :53:53.and regroup. I feel ready to go again and I am looking forward to

:53:54. > :54:04.the challenge. A couple of days until the final. Very best of luck

:54:05. > :54:14.with that. Very impressive they are. It might be a battle for the minor

:54:15. > :54:22.medals. All of the fastest losers are coming through from that second

:54:23. > :54:35.heat. All of the qualifiers knowing through to the final, which is on

:54:36. > :54:40.Friday. Hassan out in front. Aregawi and Hassan are the standout

:54:41. > :54:49.athletes. Laura Weightman will be challenging them, I am sure. Sadly,

:54:50. > :54:58.Laura Muir was in sixth place and will not go through to the final.

:54:59. > :55:00.Colin Jackson has disappeared to the commentary box. I am left with Paula

:55:01. > :55:14.and Denyse, which is lovely. To watch Laura Muir, it was really

:55:15. > :55:19.heartbreaking, wasn't it? It was. It was really hard because she was so

:55:20. > :55:24.mentally shook up by what happened in the Commonwealth Games. Then to

:55:25. > :55:30.nearly stumble a couple of times just resurrected those memories. She

:55:31. > :55:38.was tense. She had also run a lot of the race wide in lane two, almost in

:55:39. > :55:41.lane three, but it was this stumble here as they went through the ballot

:55:42. > :55:48.that really not her, and then she panicked. -- through the bell. If

:55:49. > :55:57.she had stayed relaxed she could have maybe come back, but it is

:55:58. > :56:00.understandable why she panicked. She is seeing another final run away

:56:01. > :56:06.from her and she was tensing up and was not able to make up that ground.

:56:07. > :56:09.She did not have the advantage that she had in the second semifinal,

:56:10. > :56:11.when you know what she had in the second semifinal,

:56:12. > :56:19.when you know time you are aiming for and what time you need to act.

:56:20. > :56:25.-- need to get. All of the fastest losers came from the second

:56:26. > :56:32.semifinal. To hide out there. Most era will be back after pulling out

:56:33. > :56:36.of the -- Mo Farah will be back after pulling out of the

:56:37. > :56:47.Commonwealth Games. Here are some experts from a recent interview. I

:56:48. > :56:51.had a chipped tooth and it got infected and I had some pain and I

:56:52. > :56:58.went for a run and I came back and I collapsed in the bathroom. I was

:56:59. > :57:04.knocked out. I was in so much pain in my stomach and they had to be

:57:05. > :57:10.airlifted to the main hospital. They thought something was wrong with my

:57:11. > :57:16.heart. It was crazy. I was in hospital for four days. It must have

:57:17. > :57:24.been scary. It was scary, but things happen. I'm just quite a lot of

:57:25. > :57:29.running. I would love -- I lost quite a lot of running, but I would

:57:30. > :57:32.have loved to continue and go to the Commonwealth Games. I did not want

:57:33. > :57:40.to disappoint my fans but I was nowhere near ready. I did one track

:57:41. > :57:45.session. Paula was there and she said, she was watching the track and

:57:46. > :57:51.she asked if I was all right and if should stop, and for someone like

:57:52. > :57:58.her to say that, she has seen it, and she said it was not right. It

:57:59. > :58:04.took a lot out of me, and later on, I chose the easy option, which was

:58:05. > :58:14.not fair, but she saw me struggle. It was disappointing. But if I am

:58:15. > :58:20.going to turn up I have to be 100%. There must have been some sort of

:58:21. > :58:26.misunderstanding. You and Mo Farah are very close. And we continue to

:58:27. > :58:30.be so. I was disappointing when I saw that headline. He might have

:58:31. > :58:35.seen the headline and not seen what I actually said, because he twisted

:58:36. > :58:38.it a little bit. I never said he was choosing the easy option, I just

:58:39. > :58:45.said it was an easier race here, certainly. He had longer to get over

:58:46. > :58:49.the problems, and when he was doing that session, he needed to decide,

:58:50. > :58:55.was he coming into here, and he was running tired, it was from the

:58:56. > :59:00.stress of the illness, and he was trying to recover the few days that

:59:01. > :59:05.he had lost, and he had time to do that. I was just surprised, and he

:59:06. > :59:10.was disappointed because he had not managed to get back into good

:59:11. > :59:15.shape, but he had already pulled out. I am sure that little

:59:16. > :59:20.misunderstanding will be cleared up. I suppose the bigger issue is that

:59:21. > :59:29.he doesn't seem quite fragile. The struggle he does -- he seems quite

:59:30. > :59:40.fragile. He is the double European champions. It happens a lot, they

:59:41. > :59:49.get into some injuries, all being unwell, and the defences do come up.

:59:50. > :59:53.It is scary. Yes, to get suddenly airlifted out. To have all of those

:59:54. > :59:57.concerns about your health. Then it becomes not even about getting wed

:59:58. > :00:01.either championships, it is making sure you are OK and healthy as a

:00:02. > :00:07.person. Then you can focus on whether you can come and compete.

:00:08. > :00:18.That is the men's 400-metre hurdles heats. COMMENTATOR: No British

:00:19. > :00:30.competitors in this one. The first four go through

:00:31. > :00:46.automatically and then the four fastest losers.

:00:47. > :01:04.Broz of the Czech Republic is in the outside lane.

:01:05. > :01:07.This is a fairly open a fairly open affair this year. They are moving

:01:08. > :01:18.along strongly at the moment. Puemi taking most of the cheers from

:01:19. > :01:45.the crowd. Kanervo still going strongly. It

:01:46. > :01:51.might be a fierce battle for the minor places. The tall German coming

:01:52. > :02:18.through. It will be Broz from the Czech Republic... Colin Jackson, we

:02:19. > :02:23.thought Kudryavstev... Because it is so open, these guys are literally

:02:24. > :02:32.competing from the tape. -- until the tape. The Russian showing he is

:02:33. > :02:45.in good shape. We will continue to chat a little

:02:46. > :02:49.bit about Mo Farah. The marathon training, it would seem, not

:02:50. > :02:55.understanding it well, but it has had a real impact on him? I think it

:02:56. > :02:59.has had an impact but I think a good impact. He was in phenomenal shape

:03:00. > :03:04.over the winter and that strength carried onto the summer. We will see

:03:05. > :03:07.that when he comes out and races that he is in good shape. But he

:03:08. > :03:15.took a knock mentally and physically, from the illness. From

:03:16. > :03:19.not being able to go to the Commonwealth Games as well. He would

:03:20. > :03:23.have been sitting at home worrying about his health and watching the

:03:24. > :03:29.race and wanting to be dead but that the same time, not wanting to put

:03:30. > :03:36.himself on the line unless he is 100%. -- watching the race and

:03:37. > :03:41.wanting to be there. The evidence does not seem to be that he was in

:03:42. > :03:50.amazing shape. If you saw the training he was doing in Kenya, he

:03:51. > :03:58.was in good shape. And he ran in marathons, there are few people who

:03:59. > :04:02.can do what he does. He did hit some problems coming into the race but

:04:03. > :04:06.the block of training he did over the winter was probably the best

:04:07. > :04:10.volume and intensity of training he has ever done. So he would have come

:04:11. > :04:15.out stronger, but he did struggle with a calf injury coming into

:04:16. > :04:19.London. He did not run as well as he wanted to do. But he still ran well

:04:20. > :04:27.I think. But that was another mental blow. He came in expecting him to be

:04:28. > :04:32.right up there. But that did not happen. So that was already

:04:33. > :04:37.something mentally to get over. Then he gets back into training and he

:04:38. > :04:41.collapses. I think he is a little bit lost mentally now, he does not

:04:42. > :04:48.have that aura of confidence that we have seen him having previous years.

:04:49. > :04:52.He is not the same Mo Farah, joking and laughing around and being

:04:53. > :04:57.himself. He is looking for himself a little bit. Hopefully he will find

:04:58. > :05:01.it here. Because he has been so successful, people expect him to

:05:02. > :05:07.just walk onto the track and just be victorious. Like you say, you have

:05:08. > :05:13.to learn how to run a marathon and that takes a little while. I think

:05:14. > :05:18.maybe, the guard is up a little bit. The criticism from the press

:05:19. > :05:27.perhaps, twisting things, like Paula said, it makes an athlete feel

:05:28. > :05:30.tense, that they are battling. I have experienced it. You close off a

:05:31. > :05:34.little bit because they always has to be that self-preservation to make

:05:35. > :05:39.you do what you do best and that is function in the heat of the moment,

:05:40. > :05:44.on the track, and make decisions that are the best decisions for your

:05:45. > :05:54.sport. It was tough for him because the week before he ran his

:05:55. > :05:58.marathon, there was a comparison with him and another athlete who was

:05:59. > :06:04.running well. I hardly got knocked off kilter? I think that if he had

:06:05. > :06:06.not been ill and he had been able to race this track season as he

:06:07. > :06:12.normally would have progressed, he would have been fine. It has taken

:06:13. > :06:17.it out of him. And then feeling as if you are a little bit criticised

:06:18. > :06:22.and you close yourself off and you feel attacked and that takes more

:06:23. > :06:27.energy. What he needs to do is get out there and do what he does best.

:06:28. > :06:34.Quick question, can you run a really fast marathon and run a fast 100

:06:35. > :06:40.metres? Aberdeen not within a couple of weeks. But -- probably would not

:06:41. > :06:51.within a couple of weeks. I believe he will go faster and

:06:52. > :06:55.build towards that but he will probably lose some of that 1500

:06:56. > :07:01.metres speed but right now, he is still the best in the world. Let's

:07:02. > :07:10.get back out on the track. Steve Cram.

:07:11. > :07:17.COMMENTATOR: This is the result of the first heat.

:07:18. > :07:30.Andrew? Broz goes through automatically. We will come back to

:07:31. > :07:38.some of that, more going tomorrow night. Women's 10,000 metre final

:07:39. > :08:12.tonight. This very open 400-metre hurdles event. Felix Franz.

:08:13. > :08:29.Thomas Barr showing great form. But watch out for Felix Franz. He really

:08:30. > :08:39.has a chance of taking this title. Thomas Barr started well. Franz a

:08:40. > :08:45.little bit slower. There is Franz. Thomas Barr started very well

:08:46. > :08:50.through this first 200 metres. Colin will tell us after, you really

:08:51. > :08:55.cannot take it easy in the 400-metre hurdles. You have to go out there

:08:56. > :09:00.and run hard. The young German has a lot of work to do. Thomas Barr going

:09:01. > :09:16.well. Here comes Franz coming through. Thomas Barr going well. The

:09:17. > :09:22.Russian might have just got fourth. That was a contrasting race. Thomas

:09:23. > :09:27.Barr, a little bit more experience, went out really hard. We know the

:09:28. > :09:33.sort of athlete Franz is. He came storming down the home straight to

:09:34. > :09:37.finish second. Well done Thomas Barr. The German run very

:09:38. > :09:47.cautiously. He did the right thing to qualify.

:09:48. > :09:54.He will have studied the form and he knows his opponents. He knew what he

:09:55. > :10:02.could produce. Thomas Barr, the young Irish lad, I was watching his

:10:03. > :10:06.stride patterns, very comfortable 13 strides around hurdle six. I think

:10:07. > :10:11.he has lots of potential and he is pretty decent on the flat four as

:10:12. > :10:15.well. If he can blend that hurdling technique with maturity and speed on

:10:16. > :10:25.the flat that he is demonstrating, the young lad has a future.

:10:26. > :10:33.These are the athletes that made it successfully through to the final

:10:34. > :10:37.later on this afternoon. David Storl leading the qualification. He is the

:10:38. > :10:45.favourite defending from two years ago. Watch out for Majewski, double

:10:46. > :10:46.Olympic champion. Lesnoy, at the bottom, one of the highly fancied

:10:47. > :11:13.athletes. A lifetime best of 61 metres plus.

:11:14. > :11:22.That looks good, good space on the line. Beyond qualification I think.

:11:23. > :11:27.Just shy of 60 metres. She qualified for the Olympic final in 2008. Now

:11:28. > :11:37.26 years of age. Often said to be the pride for javelin throwers. No

:11:38. > :11:43.real wind to speak of. The javelin should fly. That is auto qualifying.

:11:44. > :11:48.She can take her spikes off. And go and rest ready for the final. She is

:11:49. > :11:59.up Thursday so two days rest. Slightly unusual.

:12:00. > :12:11.Thomas Barr joining me here. I have not had a race in a couple of weeks.

:12:12. > :12:14.It shows, I came out to get to the round in the final. Into the semis

:12:15. > :12:20.tomorrow. Qualification was not too bad. There are five heats and four

:12:21. > :12:27.fastest from each one so I knew God vocation today would not be too

:12:28. > :12:33.bad. -- so I knew qualification today would not be too bad. You

:12:34. > :12:40.cannot slow down too much, you have to attack each hurdle. If you get

:12:41. > :12:44.your stride pattern wrong, it could be the difference between places if

:12:45. > :12:48.you really mess it up. The only time you can use up in the last 40

:12:49. > :12:56.metres. We look forward to seeing you next round.

:12:57. > :13:09.It is Hanna Hatsko-Fedusova from the Ukraine. That is too close to the

:13:10. > :13:13.line. She had to bail out on that. 67 metres plus, a huge lifetime best

:13:14. > :13:16.and goes in as one of the contenders, but she will have to

:13:17. > :13:37.sort her run-up out and give herself some space. Cut that short. She is

:13:38. > :13:42.certainly capable of a lot more. Barbora Spotakova, what can she do

:13:43. > :13:49.first attempt? That looked very controlled and very comfortable.

:13:50. > :13:55.Drops in very precisely. That is impressive. She had a year out last

:13:56. > :14:03.year to give birth to her first child. Yannick. She says she feels a

:14:04. > :14:12.sense of responsibility as a mother and she is through to the final. We

:14:13. > :14:22.move on to the third of five heats in the men's 400-metre hurdle. There

:14:23. > :14:32.is Rojer for Great Britain. -- Sebastian Rodger. Steve was talking

:14:33. > :14:38.a moment ago about the youngsters, Thomas Barr and the Frenchman,

:14:39. > :14:41.Franz, a lot of 22 and 23-year-old 's who are looking to make an

:14:42. > :14:45.impact. They may well be the favourites. I think the favourite

:14:46. > :14:54.might be the Estonian at the top. He is in Lane 1, not a great lane

:14:55. > :15:37.for the favourite. champion. There is Rodger. A lot of

:15:38. > :15:53.the finalists are going to be contenders for medals. The Hungarian

:15:54. > :16:09.finished second in the Hungarian championships this year, behind his

:16:10. > :16:15.rather. There is Magi. Lane two on the inside, not quite as tight as

:16:16. > :16:20.lane one. Four will go through automatically to the semifinals. You

:16:21. > :16:31.cannot take it too easily in the hurdles.

:16:32. > :16:44.The first four will go through automatically to the semifinals.

:16:45. > :16:55.This will be a fiercely contested hurdles because there is not one

:16:56. > :17:07.standout. Magi has been running so well this season. Rodger is leaving

:17:08. > :17:13.himself a bit too do here. He is beginning to make a bit of a move

:17:14. > :17:21.here around the bend. Magi looking comfortable but going very strong.

:17:22. > :17:28.Rodger is stepping up a bit. He is moving into a good position. It will

:17:29. > :17:36.be a battle for fourth place. Rodger in there to take third place. He

:17:37. > :17:41.eventually came through. The Polish athlete looked very strong. Magi

:17:42. > :17:46.looked very comfortable, but Rodger has done what was necessary to get

:17:47. > :17:52.through. The key thing is to qualify and he did that very well indeed. I

:17:53. > :17:57.am pretty sure he will be pleased with third place. It is important to

:17:58. > :18:01.feel what the conditions are like. You are battling against the

:18:02. > :18:06.barriers and your opponents, but also the conditions. A strong wind

:18:07. > :18:12.can affect your stride pattern and that is crucial to your performance.

:18:13. > :18:18.A cracking season last year. Got very close to that 49 second

:18:19. > :18:22.barrier. Not so sharp this year, but I think he enjoys this type of

:18:23. > :18:28.competition, because there is no clear favourite and this is an

:18:29. > :18:31.opportunity to raise his game. He looks his lead leg over the barriers

:18:32. > :18:39.and that could cause a bit of a Rob, . If you click one -- a bit of a

:18:40. > :18:45.problem if you clip one. You could end up falling. It will get really

:18:46. > :19:02.serious tomorrow in the semifinals, but Rodger will be there. Have --

:19:03. > :19:19.Magi managed to just sneak through. Rodger safely through. COMMENTATOR:

:19:20. > :19:23.how was that? I work hard this week. I tried to rectify problems

:19:24. > :19:30.and it seems to have clicked. I am looking forward to tomorrow. You

:19:31. > :19:40.will have to up your game. It will be a bit more cut-throat. I am just

:19:41. > :19:50.happy. I can really concentrate on tomorrow. The Commonwealth Games, I

:19:51. > :19:54.did not want to let people down, so why am happy to have the opportunity

:19:55. > :20:03.here. We wish you all the best for tomorrow. Thank you. COMMENTATOR:

:20:04. > :20:10.well done to Rodger. You are just joining us, there was disappointment

:20:11. > :20:14.for Laura Moore or, who did not make it through, but Hannah England and

:20:15. > :20:19.Laura make -- Laura Muir did not make it through, but Laura Weightman

:20:20. > :20:30.and Hannah England did. There is a bit of work for Rodger to do. You

:20:31. > :20:34.can see that his hurdle technique, he just seems to roll his leg a

:20:35. > :20:40.little bit, and it throws him off balance on landing. He is losing a

:20:41. > :20:44.lot of time over the hurdles. We know he is good on the flats, but

:20:45. > :20:49.that he gets to rip with his technique, -- grip with his

:20:50. > :20:55.technique, his time could really calmed down. He is making that

:20:56. > :21:00.transition into the senior ranks. There is a lot to be and proved

:21:01. > :21:07.here. One men who has come through massively this year is Neil

:21:08. > :21:15.Flanery. This is a real opportunity for him. Absolutely. He has already

:21:16. > :21:20.taken one big step up this year and he will be coming in, riding high,

:21:21. > :21:28.and hopefully negotiating the rounds safely and producing big results. It

:21:29. > :21:32.is a mindset change for an athlete to go into the Championships. A year

:21:33. > :21:36.ago he thought perhaps this was a dream and now we have a chance of

:21:37. > :21:46.getting on the podium. He missed out on a medal in the Commonwealth Games

:21:47. > :21:52.will stop his --: Commonwealth Games. He will have looked at the

:21:53. > :21:57.rankings, he is confident. He is ranked second in Europe and he knows

:21:58. > :22:02.there is an opportunity. I love his attitude and the way he competes.

:22:03. > :22:09.Fingers crossed for him this morning. We have talked about the

:22:10. > :22:13.issue of stride pattern. You cannot take it too easy. There is the

:22:14. > :22:23.mascot. I am not sure what he is called. We might see some towels in

:22:24. > :22:35.the studio later on. This has all gone horribly wrong. I am not

:22:36. > :22:40.digging you out of that whole! If you have been in Z?rich the last

:22:41. > :22:46.couple of years, the mascot has been a big fixture, and he has driven

:22:47. > :22:51.everybody bananas. As mascots go, he is good, one of the best, and he

:22:52. > :22:59.never stops working. I don't know how he keeps his weight on. He is

:23:00. > :23:14.somebody that the people in Z?rich will know very well indeed. Back to

:23:15. > :23:20.business. Flanery, there he is will stop a great start or Hammett this

:23:21. > :23:25.season and then he lost his way into the beds and iPods he -- dare he is.

:23:26. > :23:31.A great start for him this season and then he lost his way. His

:23:32. > :23:37.training partner Tom Burton goes in the final heat will stop should be

:23:38. > :23:45.-- heat. It should be fairly straightforward for him. There is

:23:46. > :23:52.the new champion, 20 years of age, not a junior anymore. We have the

:23:53. > :23:59.Championships recently in Eugene and a few people have come over from

:24:00. > :24:04.them. He is 20 now, Al-Qaeda the Junior ranks. -- he is now out of

:24:05. > :24:13.the Junior ranks. The big tall Serbian had such a

:24:14. > :24:36.great year last year. Just looking for Flanery to

:24:37. > :25:00.negotiate here. Flanery could be woken up a little

:25:01. > :25:16.bit. He is judging in the race well. He just manages to pick himself up

:25:17. > :25:33.again. Striding into the last hurdle. Flannery finishing much

:25:34. > :25:37.better. 49.78, very good indeed. Bekric went off so hard and we saw

:25:38. > :25:43.what he can do. He was brilliant last year. I wonder if he will be a

:25:44. > :25:49.danger. I think he was a little bit excited. Well done, Flannery. At the

:25:50. > :25:56.Commonwealth Games, Flannery really struggled in that first round. He

:25:57. > :26:00.performed very well in the final. He ran a far more controlled race here,

:26:01. > :26:05.no panic whatsoever when people came up on him from the outside or

:26:06. > :26:14.inside, and he won that race perfectly well. He judged it well.

:26:15. > :26:18.Really pleased he has gone in at 49 seconds, because that is a mental

:26:19. > :26:23.breakthrough for a lot of these athletes. Coming into these

:26:24. > :26:28.championships with 48.8, and the defence of his performance in the

:26:29. > :26:32.Commonwealth Games, I think that sets him up nicely. Semifinal, and

:26:33. > :26:51.hopefully, the final. This is the first attempt of Jelaca

:26:52. > :26:56.to go beyond qualification. Way beyond it. Beyond the 60 metres.

:26:57. > :27:07.There is no-one that we have seen so far go beyond that line. It looks as

:27:08. > :27:12.though the 24-year-old Serbian has put a place in the final. She has

:27:13. > :27:15.booked her place successfully there, it would seem. That is a league

:27:16. > :27:35.qualifier. -- league qualifier. One more heat to come. I am sure Tom

:27:36. > :27:39.Burton got a good view of that one. The Russian just about got rounds. A

:27:40. > :27:55.personal best for the finish it seems like this has worked

:27:56. > :28:01.perfectly today. I just had to run a race that IT was good to get into

:28:02. > :28:07.the top two, to get a cut that short I just knew that I had to run a race

:28:08. > :28:16.that was good to get into the top two. I was happy with that. It is

:28:17. > :28:22.supposed to be horrible tomorrow but nothing I have not run in before. I

:28:23. > :28:33.was just chilling out and then putting the burners on. I am happy

:28:34. > :28:41.with it. A nice, controlled race. We wish you well. COMMENTATOR: there is

:28:42. > :28:50.the mascot again. With reference to my previous comments about towels in

:28:51. > :29:07.the studio, this is what I meant. He makes a noise! Let's forget about

:29:08. > :29:13.that. A great performance from Flannery. He did not panic, he ran

:29:14. > :29:18.smoothly, then a bit of a burst on that last hurdle just to make his

:29:19. > :29:22.presence felt. I am sure he has taken a great deal of confidence

:29:23. > :29:28.from his performance at the Commonwealth Games. You see that

:29:29. > :29:31.little bit of acceleration. Just knowing that you are going to come

:29:32. > :29:36.through and qualify, just put a little bit in there to show the

:29:37. > :29:48.others that you mean business. Just a quick word on dye green. Get well

:29:49. > :29:54.soon. Torrid times. It is back to back injuries, illnesses, being

:29:55. > :29:58.unwell, and not able to show the caliber of athlete that he really

:29:59. > :30:05.is. You do not put down the times that he has run with that sort of

:30:06. > :30:11.pedigree, and the job now is to find his confidence. Have a run of being

:30:12. > :30:15.free of injury and get some training under the belt and get back on the

:30:16. > :30:19.track and let people know that he is not finished by any stretch of the

:30:20. > :30:28.imagination. He has had so many years now where he has not had to do

:30:29. > :30:33.that work. He is going to come back from so many knocks. He has got

:30:34. > :30:38.himself out, he went to the Olympics, and he went there and

:30:39. > :30:44.David absolutely everything, and the amount of Chaco and he gave it

:30:45. > :30:48.absolutely everything -- and he gave it absolutely everything. You have

:30:49. > :30:59.got to feel for what he has been through.

:31:00. > :31:07.There is Tom Burton going in the final heat and the men's 400 metres.

:31:08. > :31:19.All of the mascots now feel they have to raise their game! That is

:31:20. > :31:24.some serious overacting going on! He is going to injure himself, or

:31:25. > :31:36.herself, I do not know who is in their! -- there.

:31:37. > :31:55.Tom Burton has one of the quickest times this season in this line-up.

:31:56. > :32:17.Right, Tom Burton, second in the UK Championships, but find Flannery. --

:32:18. > :32:26.behind Flannery. Lane 8, not a dreadful lane for the hurdles.

:32:27. > :32:37.Fernandez of Spain in three. The Belgian champion in Lane 5. Good

:32:38. > :32:46.hope for the home nation in Lane 6, Hussain. Four to go through

:32:47. > :32:53.automatically and the fastest loser, at the moment, is from Russia.

:32:54. > :33:20.Tom Burton running a patient race at the moment.

:33:21. > :33:29.Burton has Hussain inside and alongside him at the moment. He must

:33:30. > :33:34.not panic, Burton. He must run his own race but Hussain running very

:33:35. > :33:38.strongly at the moment. Tom Burton in a good position, third at the

:33:39. > :33:45.moment. Just hitting that hurdle and looking around and seeing that he

:33:46. > :33:55.can do it, Hussain ambling across the line. Tom Burton again, safely

:33:56. > :34:00.through. Good performance, nice to see all of our boys through to the

:34:01. > :34:08.next round. But everybody will have to step up, that semifinal. Good

:34:09. > :34:17.victory from the Swiss. The home advantage, we saw that help athletes

:34:18. > :34:20.in London. This is a very open competition, Hussain will certainly

:34:21. > :34:31.be one we need to watch. He has been pretty good all season. Great stuff

:34:32. > :34:35.by the Swiss athlete. Tom was in Lane 8, a difficult one to run in

:34:36. > :34:39.hurdles, because you do not train very much in those very far outside

:34:40. > :34:47.lanes. So it can affect your stride pattern. It is very crucial. He just

:34:48. > :34:50.clipped that barrier, it did not affect in too much, he kept focused

:34:51. > :34:59.and did not throw his shoulders back. A little bit more of a grimace

:35:00. > :35:04.and he lent back, off his guard, but he still had the opportunity to

:35:05. > :35:11.check his position. We will see you next round pond. -- Tom. Pole vault

:35:12. > :35:36.qualification. This may be the height that sorts

:35:37. > :35:39.out the finalists. Just 12 athletes. To go through to the final on

:35:40. > :35:47.Thursday. A very good clearance for the defending champion, four metres

:35:48. > :35:52.and 60 at her best this season but has jumped four metres and 76 from

:35:53. > :35:59.last year. Looking very comfortable indeed. First-time clearance.

:36:00. > :36:10.This athlete from Greece looking to match that clearance. Two

:36:11. > :36:27.consecutive Paul's of athletes. That is another good clearance.

:36:28. > :36:30.Let's just confirmed the qualifiers from the first heat of the 400-metre

:36:31. > :36:34.hurdles. Let's just confirmed the qualifiers

:36:35. > :36:36.from the first heat of the Hussein looked very good, a decent time, he

:36:37. > :36:51.just rolled across the line. Burton went through in third place.

:36:52. > :37:01.These are the qualifiers that moved through to the semifinals tomorrow.

:37:02. > :37:10.Flannery safely through, as was Sebastian Rodger. Tom Burton also

:37:11. > :37:17.safely through as an automatic qualifier.

:37:18. > :37:20.Like if you British guys before you, you took that with ease and it

:37:21. > :37:26.looked like a comfortable performance. It felt comfortable, I

:37:27. > :37:37.was a little bit on top of the hurdles down the back straight. How

:37:38. > :37:43.were your nerves? I felt really up for it weirdly. I expected to be

:37:44. > :37:50.more nervous. Talking of tomorrow and what you will need to do, it

:37:51. > :37:55.goes up another notch. It does, they are good guys out there. I will

:37:56. > :38:00.speak to the coach and watch it back and analyse. Watch where I went

:38:01. > :38:01.wrong. The time was not too bad. There is definitely a bit more in

:38:02. > :38:10.there. Well done Tom Flannery, and

:38:11. > :38:36.Sebastian Rodger and Tom Burton. see our boys doing well. Let's hear

:38:37. > :38:45.from the British number one, Asha Phillip. I told myself I was going

:38:46. > :38:50.to do two championships so I prepared myself to do both. My body

:38:51. > :38:58.has held up well luckily because I told myself I can do it. I did get a

:38:59. > :39:05.personal best. I was happy I was able to compete with those girls in

:39:06. > :39:10.the final. I always stick to a plan but I noticed this Commonwealth, a

:39:11. > :39:18.lot of things changed through the week of my training and through the

:39:19. > :39:21.competition. Me and my coach will take that through to this

:39:22. > :39:26.competition and it seems to be working so far. What happens with me

:39:27. > :39:27.is that I learn on the go. Every year something

:39:28. > :39:32.is that I learn on the go. Every year new and I say, I will take this

:39:33. > :39:37.on to next year. What went right here was my start, my MPs to be

:39:38. > :39:43.better, what do I need to do next and better in the next race? I am

:39:44. > :39:51.hoping this week will show all of the hard work. STUDIO: Asha Phillip

:39:52. > :39:59.goes into the Heat 3. It has been good to see Asha get into the form

:40:00. > :40:04.we know she can have. Yes and her coach has done a great job with that

:40:05. > :40:11.young lady, Christine Bal maker -- Christine Bowmaker. She has got her

:40:12. > :40:18.confidence to get where she needs to be to compete at this level. As she

:40:19. > :40:22.said, she is able to improve round by round. She makes those little

:40:23. > :40:25.mistakes, maybe she has not come out of the blocks very well, but she

:40:26. > :40:37.seems to correct herself as she goes. We normally see the best of

:40:38. > :40:45.her in those finals. In terms of world terms, perhaps, but those

:40:46. > :40:47.girls will not have it easy. Two very good Dutch women.

:40:48. > :40:51.world terms, perhaps, but those girls will not have it Dafne

:40:52. > :40:59.Schippers also in very good shape and probably one of the favourites.

:41:00. > :41:10.A heptathlete. Remarkable how quick she is running. She is. Her coach

:41:11. > :41:15.advised her to just go with it and advise it and to have an opportunity

:41:16. > :41:20.to win D1 amateur 100 metres in these championships so good luck to

:41:21. > :41:26.her. We will go to Heat 1 with Andrew Cotter.

:41:27. > :41:45.COMMENTATOR: We will see a few athletes, greater favourites than

:41:46. > :41:54.the British athletes. Samuel and Pinto in Lane 7 as well.

:41:55. > :42:08.Busy morning here in the Letzigrund Stadium. Women's pole vault.

:42:09. > :42:23.We have seen two athletes go clear. That looks solid. Tidy. Simple

:42:24. > :42:29.technique. And a good clearance. Just looking at the plant, the

:42:30. > :42:33.athlete rocks back and drives the feet up skywards and then pushes

:42:34. > :42:36.hands and goes over the bar. Athletic power, agility, speed. A

:42:37. > :42:56.wonderful display. She is one of two very capable Greek

:42:57. > :43:02.pole vaulters. Her team-mate also a huge contender here for the title.

:43:03. > :43:10.Well clear, look at the height achieved there. Way over that

:43:11. > :43:13.marker. Automatic qualification is four metres 50. But speculation is

:43:14. > :43:18.that there are not many athletes going clear on the first attempt. So

:43:19. > :43:27.maybe this title sort out the top 12. -- so maybe this height will

:43:28. > :43:35.sort out the top 12. That was a good first-time clearance.

:43:36. > :43:41.Just about ready for this first round heat in the women's 100

:43:42. > :43:42.metres. Dafne Schippers taking all of the headlines for the

:43:43. > :44:13.Netherlands. Four to go through automatically

:44:14. > :44:49.plus the four fastest losers. Switzerland have a winner to

:44:50. > :44:54.celebrate. The time of that, 11.32. All right, calm down! We will see a

:44:55. > :45:15.lot of that row in these championships. -- that cow. Pinto

:45:16. > :45:28.did not look that impressive. A national record for Switzerland.

:45:29. > :45:35.What happens to Samuel? A great talent, but she just squeezed

:45:36. > :45:40.through. Never quite got into it. You would expect someone like that

:45:41. > :45:59.with that pedigree, what of the fastest, you would expect of them to

:46:00. > :46:10.be better. Mayer, looking very good. The Frenchman with a lifetime best

:46:11. > :46:20.in the long run. A season's best of 33. Fourth in Moscow last year, and

:46:21. > :46:27.a very good start. Close to his PB. He looks pleased. A new lifetime

:46:28. > :46:36.best, and he puts his marked out and says, come and catch me. Ashley

:46:37. > :46:43.Bryant a little bit later on. A slightly disappointing start, not as

:46:44. > :46:49.quick as they would have hoped he would run. He did not run

:46:50. > :46:56.particularly well. A lot of these athletes have mentally prepared and

:46:57. > :47:01.this is their big championships. Mayer is definitely one of them. We

:47:02. > :47:13.know that the French are very good at their pole-vault. He made some

:47:14. > :47:21.strides in that area. Dafne Schippers, unusual to see a

:47:22. > :47:28.multi-event athlete running such world-class speeds. She has been

:47:29. > :47:36.displaying an electric speed this year. It is incredible. She trains

:47:37. > :47:41.really hard. I know her training group. She has grown in such

:47:42. > :47:49.confidence in the last couple of seasons. I think it bodes well. She

:47:50. > :47:52.is enjoying printing at the moment. -- sprinting. The Dutch are really

:47:53. > :47:59.celebrating the form of this young women. What should we expect for

:48:00. > :48:06.Henry and these championships? I don't know. She was fourth in the

:48:07. > :48:12.world Junior championships. A lot of optimism around her. She was one of

:48:13. > :48:17.the torch bearers at the Olympics. A lot to look forward to in terms of

:48:18. > :48:22.prospects, but we have not seen her recently, and I would like to gauge

:48:23. > :48:29.how she moves and how she is feeling for these championships. Another

:48:30. > :48:33.athlete we will see who is a double world champion, Morgan Lake, and

:48:34. > :48:44.they have the Avalon, and also in the high jump will stop -- in the

:48:45. > :48:50.Avalon and also in high jump. I think, she is only 17, and she still

:48:51. > :48:54.has enough time to double up at the Championships, and they are never

:48:55. > :48:58.easy, and I think she has made a sensible decision to come here and

:48:59. > :49:13.feel this environment and see how she gets on. A great crop of young

:49:14. > :49:22.sprinters here. Henry is just 18. Look down at the ranking list. Dafne

:49:23. > :49:35.Schippers, a great performance this year in Glasgow.

:49:36. > :49:44.She cannot run for events on the she can on the run three. Henry needs to

:49:45. > :49:51.be on the case here. She should be fine. Emily one of the slightly more

:49:52. > :49:58.difficult heats -- probably one of the slightly more difficult heats.

:49:59. > :50:15.The French women might be one to watch. The Swiss just watched her

:50:16. > :50:21.team-mate run very well. They are hoping their sprinters can do well

:50:22. > :50:24.here. It might be difficult against Schippers and Henry. Top four go

:50:25. > :50:48.through. A terrible start for French.

:50:49. > :51:03.Schippers looks excellent. 11 point 11 -- 11.11. Not phased by being

:51:04. > :51:07.right beside one of the growing stars. Qualification was the most

:51:08. > :51:12.important thing and she did it very well. That went pretty good to me.

:51:13. > :51:23.It looked good from about 30 metres. She did not have the best

:51:24. > :51:30.start. For Henry, good running, I am watching what she is doing, slightly

:51:31. > :51:34.chasing at the end. That comes with experience. She will just go with

:51:35. > :51:42.the flow. A good performance, excellent time. I think this young

:51:43. > :51:50.lady may get closer to that 11 second mark. She is close enough as

:51:51. > :51:55.it is. The way she is running, and that performance in Glasgow, the

:51:56. > :52:00.track is quick, a slight breeze, and we will not be sure about conditions

:52:01. > :52:06.until later on, but I am sure she will be close to 11. This is the

:52:07. > :52:09.first time she has come into the Championships as a favourite, and

:52:10. > :52:12.that will affect her mentally, because people will be expecting

:52:13. > :52:25.things. How she deals with the pressure, only time will tell. This

:52:26. > :52:32.is the European leader in terms of height to clear this season.

:52:33. > :52:45.She starts her fourth bed at the European jam in chips. A good

:52:46. > :52:52.clearance there. She was eighth in the World Championships last year.

:52:53. > :53:10.That is a very comfortable clearance indeed. A tremendous start to your

:53:11. > :53:14.senior career. This is a whole different level. I have come into

:53:15. > :53:20.the championship with no expectations whatsoever. I am so

:53:21. > :53:30.thankful to have been selected for an individual. I am relaxing and

:53:31. > :53:34.having fun with it. A couple of days I was doing starts with Dafne

:53:35. > :53:38.Schippers and we told each other good luck, and she said I had an

:53:39. > :53:44.amazing start, so that is a compliment. I am looking forward to

:53:45. > :53:51.the next round. I am definitely happy. We are looking forward to

:53:52. > :53:57.that. COMMENTATOR: how nice and polite! When you are 18, it is

:53:58. > :54:04.great, every time you come out, your personal best is always in the air,

:54:05. > :54:18.and she has got one there. Schippers looked very good indeed. Amy

:54:19. > :54:23.Foster, just out of it. A great performance from Henry. The

:54:24. > :54:32.first major championships as a senior. She looked good. She has got

:54:33. > :54:36.great physique and she uses her legs really well. A new personal best is

:54:37. > :54:42.ink rideable. I was not sure what she would do here, -- is incredible.

:54:43. > :54:47.I was not sure what she would do here, with her nerves. She has

:54:48. > :54:52.watched Bianco Williams and Jodie Williams run brilliantly for the

:54:53. > :54:58.Commonwealth Games. It was all on her to see whether she belonged in

:54:59. > :55:02.this new caliber of British female sprinting, but she lived up to what

:55:03. > :55:09.we know she is capable of, and she ran really well. An interesting

:55:10. > :55:13.point, this fact of the feeling at home in a major championship, it

:55:14. > :55:21.does not always happen automatically. No, it does not, but

:55:22. > :55:23.when you come as a youngster, there is not the huge pressure of

:55:24. > :55:34.expectation, it is about coming in and having fun, and that is what she

:55:35. > :55:42.did out there. Asha Philip on the line for heat number three. Fourth

:55:43. > :55:49.at the world indoors, bronze in the relay. She is just beside the

:55:50. > :55:52.European Champion four years ago. There is to drag each other a long

:55:53. > :56:03.and it should be there he comfortable for them to qualify. The

:56:04. > :56:18.Bulgarian in lane one, just fresh back from a doping band. Four to go

:56:19. > :56:29.through automatically. The Ukrainian is looking nice. The

:56:30. > :57:01.Bulgarian it takes the fourth place. Sale or just taking it ahead of Asha

:57:02. > :57:05.Philip. A good performance by them both. We expect them both to qualify

:57:06. > :57:14.comfortably. They had a nice little battle down the home straight. They

:57:15. > :57:29.know they will be in serious contention later on. That winning

:57:30. > :57:34.time was given to us. Dafne Schippers will be very hard to

:57:35. > :57:44.beat. Asha Philip safely through. Those two on the outside. It has

:57:45. > :57:59.been given to the Bulgarian in lane one. First and second place go to

:58:00. > :58:05.Verena Sailer and Asha Philip. You had to walk up quite a few steps to

:58:06. > :58:12.join me. I am so tired! Thank you for doing that. I'm sure people will

:58:13. > :58:16.not criticise me for speaking to people when they are out of breath.

:58:17. > :58:26.What does this do to your mentality at the start? I want to attack every

:58:27. > :58:32.round. It was really good. Not too bad. I am happy with it. I don't

:58:33. > :58:38.know what time my God, but I just hope I get a good lane in the

:58:39. > :58:44.semifinals -- what time I got, but I just hope I get a good lane in the

:58:45. > :58:50.semifinals. You came into your own. I am hoping it will all go well for

:58:51. > :58:54.me. I run my own race and stay focused, and I can come out of here

:58:55. > :59:05.with a medal or a personal best. All of the best for tomorrow.

:59:06. > :59:09.COMMENTATOR:. Safely through. That is a long way behind Dafne

:59:10. > :59:28.Schippers, though. Safely through, and perhaps more to come. The long

:59:29. > :59:43.jump a very impressive. He has got a lifetime best of 7.58.

:59:44. > :59:49.He has just run a personal best in the 100 metres. Readers may be more

:59:50. > :59:56.to come from him. If you have ran a personal best in the 100, you'd

:59:57. > :00:01.expect to do that in the long jump. There may be more to come from him.

:00:02. > :00:15.7.25. Ashley Bryant, what do they get him

:00:16. > :00:26.out of the 100 metres? Seven out of ten?

:00:27. > :00:33.He looks good on the board. Silver medal last week at the com of

:00:34. > :00:43.games. He puts on the British vest here. Looking to get amongst the

:00:44. > :00:55.medals. -- the Commonwealth Games. Tiredness can not be a factor. It

:00:56. > :01:03.doesn't -- does not look like it is what is needed. 7.21. Back to the

:01:04. > :01:10.pole vault. Second attempt for the Russian. She jumped a personal best

:01:11. > :01:17.to win the Russian Championships this summer.

:01:18. > :01:26.Under pressure, coping with it well, good plan. I do not know why the

:01:27. > :01:30.first attempt was a foul. There's a lot to think about and the pole

:01:31. > :01:38.vault, possession of the bar, speed on the runway. -- position of the

:01:39. > :01:48.bar. She is clear on our second attempt at 4.35 metres.

:01:49. > :01:56.It is pretty busy at the top end, the pole vault was on and also the

:01:57. > :02:38.shot put. The women's 100 metres is out for heat four.

:02:39. > :02:51.four that go through. Not the strongest of the heats. Most of the

:02:52. > :02:58.heats have two or three contenders. This morning, with the sun shining,

:02:59. > :03:04.the first time on this track, it is nothing more than a breeze. Pretty

:03:05. > :03:09.good conditions. These might be the best conditions we get all week. The

:03:10. > :03:13.weather forecast is not brilliant to be honest. The women's final is

:03:14. > :03:17.tomorrow night. They have the semifinals and then the final. It

:03:18. > :03:47.will probably be cooler than it is today.

:03:48. > :04:01.11.03! . That could come down, Colin. What a run. That was flat

:04:02. > :04:06.out. To me, that was flat out. That equals the best in Europe this year.

:04:07. > :04:20.If we did not know already that she was a contender, she has underlined

:04:21. > :04:27.it there. She got a decent start. When you are really a 200 metres

:04:28. > :04:29.specialist that has stepped down, she has really surprised everybody

:04:30. > :04:35.by banging out that performance. That could be part of our plan. She

:04:36. > :04:42.wants to see what she could do at this time in the morning in a one

:04:43. > :04:47.off race. She could go a little bit quicker in the final. She could be

:04:48. > :04:54.testing herself out. What a way to test yourself out, 11.03, equalling

:04:55. > :04:57.the European leader. She has been running very well in the last few

:04:58. > :05:12.weeks and it proves she's a big contender for the gold medal here.

:05:13. > :05:17.very strong German contenders for a medal. He ran below 11 seconds in

:05:18. > :05:21.the 100 metres. This is his first attempt at the long jump. That was

:05:22. > :05:33.good on the board. You could hear that. It looks very good indeed. He

:05:34. > :05:37.is looking very impressive. 10.90 in that 100 metres. He transferred his

:05:38. > :05:48.speed well. It could be a lifetime best. That was decent technique. He

:05:49. > :05:53.looked pleased. 7.55 metres and a personal best for the German. The

:05:54. > :06:01.three Germans are having a ball. Here is another one of them. Rico

:06:02. > :06:05.Freimuth. He was the fastest of all of all the athletes and that 100

:06:06. > :06:12.metres. His first attempt in the long jump. He looks steady on the

:06:13. > :06:18.approach, controlled. He did not unleash the speed that we saw taken

:06:19. > :06:24.out to that very quick time in the first of the ten events. The Germans

:06:25. > :06:32.are very strong in all of the technical events as you would

:06:33. > :06:42.expect. Rico Freimuth with a lifetime best of 7.55. 7.34, a

:06:43. > :06:50.slight improvement on his first round and it equals his season 's

:06:51. > :07:07.best. Steve Backley, what about the design of those nice spotlights as

:07:08. > :07:10.we frame nicely the results. With that 11.03, that was very quick but

:07:11. > :07:18.we will mention the spotlights later.

:07:19. > :07:27.We have seen some heats of the women's 100 metres. Myriam Soumare

:07:28. > :07:32.arry ran very heart and was the pick of the bunch. She looked great. I do

:07:33. > :07:37.not know why she felt she needed to run so hard. It was a brilliant run

:07:38. > :07:41.from half. That was in contrast to Dafne Schippers who was very

:07:42. > :07:45.relaxed. She was within herself and she had more to Dafne Schippers who

:07:46. > :07:49.was very relaxed. She was within herself and she had more together.

:07:50. > :07:53.Dafne Schippers does not have an electric start, she does her running

:07:54. > :07:58.towards the end of the race. We have seen that from our time and time

:07:59. > :08:05.again. Because she is such a good 200 metres runner we do not worry.

:08:06. > :08:10.At this point we would have expected her to shut down and he's off, maybe

:08:11. > :08:13.in the back of her mind that she wants to show that heptathlete that

:08:14. > :08:19.she is not going to come here and run away with this. I am here for

:08:20. > :08:23.business. What more athlete will like is somebody coming from another

:08:24. > :08:28.event and starting to shake things up? You will feel the challenge and

:08:29. > :08:48.feel that you want to put the markdown, Mark your territory. Heat

:08:49. > :08:57.five? I am really loving Ashleigh she is, quick and confident. It is

:08:58. > :09:44.Ashleigh Nelson being introduced. Ivet Lalova is the other contender

:09:45. > :09:50.for the medals here. 11.49 is the fastest time for Phil Healy. The

:09:51. > :09:53.fastest of the losers is 11.52. That should not be a concern for Ashleigh

:09:54. > :10:50.Nelson. Four go through automatically.

:10:51. > :10:57.Ivet Lalova not as quick as the other seats. Ashleigh Nelson safely

:10:58. > :11:01.through. Ivet Lalova not as quick as the

:11:02. > :11:05.other seats. Ashleigh Nelson She normally explodes out of the blocks

:11:06. > :11:11.but she took time, she ambled out of the blocks. She literally just

:11:12. > :11:15.floated through this 100 metres. Ashleigh Nelson ran very well

:11:16. > :11:25.indeed. It would not surprise me if she ran a personal best. 11 point

:11:26. > :11:40.19. Very good on this track. -- 11 .19. Celine Distel-Bonnet goes

:11:41. > :11:46.through automatically as well. What a run for Ashleigh Nelson. That is a

:11:47. > :11:52.second personal best for a British athlete this morning. Fantastic, I

:11:53. > :11:56.am delighted for her. You heard time and again in athletics, great

:11:57. > :12:04.Junior, full of promise, lost Highway. 11.19, fantastic. It did

:12:05. > :12:09.not look quick. She came through nicely towards the end. It is a new

:12:10. > :12:13.personal best. What is great to see, all the three of the athletes

:12:14. > :12:17.were comfortable in this environment. You need to feel at

:12:18. > :12:20.home and show you belong here. Negotiate the rounds with getting an

:12:21. > :12:25.eye to the best performance in the final.

:12:26. > :12:38.Well done. A new personal best to start off. 11.19. Wicked. I wanted

:12:39. > :12:43.to run the first 40 and Sievert was, make it through to the next round.

:12:44. > :12:47.This could be a fast-track, it is proving to be so, what did it feel

:12:48. > :12:52.like? I raced on this track last year and they have changed it.

:12:53. > :12:58.Faster people make a fast tracks, so I will stick with that. Good

:12:59. > :13:04.psychology. Tomorrow, you need to step it up but there's more to come.

:13:05. > :13:09.I feel really good. Coming off the back of the Commonwealth Games,

:13:10. > :13:12.winning a bronze medal in the relay, that is a boost. I want to see if I

:13:13. > :13:20.can do something on my own individually.

:13:21. > :13:28.The result of that final heat in the women's 100 metres. Eve yet --

:13:29. > :13:34.Yvette Lalova safely through, the defending champion. Ashleigh Nelson

:13:35. > :13:35.goes through automatically. These are the qualifiers for the

:13:36. > :14:15.semifinals tomorrow night. Phil Healy sadly missed out. Goldie

:14:16. > :14:18.Sayers has an eye on that, she is getting ready to qualify in the

:14:19. > :14:31.javelin. Let us hear from her. You have the honour of being the

:14:32. > :14:36.team captain when the British team has got a great buzz around it, it

:14:37. > :14:38.doesn't make your job easier? Yes, it is a huge honour. That is what

:14:39. > :14:49.everybody says. It is a privilege to be back in the

:14:50. > :14:58.team to see -- so to see it as an added bonus is understating it. It

:14:59. > :15:04.has been quite nerve wracking. I am pretty nervous about it. It is

:15:05. > :15:09.mainly because you know it is an honour to do it, to make the speech.

:15:10. > :15:16.I think I will go the speech. I think I will have learned in the

:15:17. > :15:20.last two years. For me, it is giving me more perspective on my career and

:15:21. > :15:25.my life in general than any other time that I have been competing. I

:15:26. > :15:28.have been competing for Great Britain since I was 15. I have

:15:29. > :15:33.learned a tremendous amount but never as much as in the last two

:15:34. > :15:38.years. Athletes talk about injury all the time and it gets boring but

:15:39. > :15:44.I have torn my catheter twice. All of a sudden I feel fully fit. I

:15:45. > :15:52.thought it was all over. -- Tom the muscle in my lower leg. Having said

:15:53. > :15:58.that, I think it was the best thing now, I know my speed of release is

:15:59. > :16:04.two metres per second quicker than that it has in my career, I am very

:16:05. > :16:15.fast and just need to hit the right angles at the right time. It is all

:16:16. > :16:22.about timing. It certainly is all about timing. Goldie Sayers going in

:16:23. > :16:28.the qualification competition. 5750 is the level she has to reach. She

:16:29. > :16:33.will probably do that. Steve Backley has joined us. Interesting to hear

:16:34. > :16:39.Goldie Sayers talking there. She didn't quite get it right at the

:16:40. > :16:44.Commonwealth Games. As she said, it is all about timing and she didn't

:16:45. > :16:51.get it quite right in Glasgow. She said she was either going to throw

:16:52. > :16:56.57 metres or 67 metres and unfortunately it was the former. In

:16:57. > :17:02.qualifying, that 57 would get them through but she needs to tie her

:17:03. > :17:06.arms and legs together. Her technique was out of sorts in

:17:07. > :17:12.Glasgow but she needs to pull together her timing and get her legs

:17:13. > :17:18.involved. She is very comfortable in this environment, a world-class

:17:19. > :17:22.thrower. Given what happened at London 2012, perhaps she wants it

:17:23. > :17:25.too badly and that might be the timing issue, she wants it too badly

:17:26. > :17:29.and that might be the timing issue, she wanted to badly? In London 2012

:17:30. > :17:35.she was in fantastic shape, she threw a British record just before

:17:36. > :17:41.the games and she snapped a ligament in her elbow. She had no chance. She

:17:42. > :17:44.went bravely, many thought that she shouldn't. Many thought it was a

:17:45. > :17:51.career ending decision in the Olympics. Maybe she had doubt in her

:17:52. > :17:56.mind, she was rusty going into Glasgow. Coming into championships,

:17:57. > :18:01.your blood feels different. Adrenaline flowing through your

:18:02. > :18:06.veins. She will have come to terms with what that feels like. She will

:18:07. > :18:13.have unfinished business and needs to get into the final first of all

:18:14. > :18:20.but at her very best is a contender. She needs that sense of calm and

:18:21. > :18:28.mass. Not getting ahead of herself. You have got to stay calm but stay

:18:29. > :18:32.aggressive. -- of calmness. It contradicts everything you have been

:18:33. > :18:37.thinking about, rushing and going quick. You need to stay relaxed. It

:18:38. > :18:47.is a real mixture of emotions and keeping an eye on your technique.

:18:48. > :19:00.Here she goes. 57.50 is what she needs. That didn't look quite

:19:01. > :19:05.together. 57.50 is the yellow line. Her legs strike, her arms are on the

:19:06. > :19:13.move. There is no delay. Javelin throwing is almost like cracking a

:19:14. > :19:19.whip. Her legs and arms are working together. She needs to find her

:19:20. > :19:24.separation. She has an automatic qualification. She can take her

:19:25. > :19:33.boots and walk away. That is an automatic codification and that is

:19:34. > :19:39.OK to start. I wonder whether she might have another couple of throws.

:19:40. > :19:48.Would she want to have a couple more throws? Maybe out the back but not

:19:49. > :19:54.with anyone watching. These athletes have been on the bus this morning.

:19:55. > :20:01.James Wilkinson at the team training track, I saw him doing some barrier

:20:02. > :20:04.work. He said he enjoyed the Commonwealth Games experience. It

:20:05. > :20:09.was a brave runner when he went with the pace and really attacked it. It

:20:10. > :20:17.was a really big learning experience for him. He is in good shape. He has

:20:18. > :20:25.thoughts of doing well. It is going to be a very open race. This man

:20:26. > :20:47.surprised everybody back in 2006. A former champion. This is a man to

:20:48. > :21:03.look for. Christians are left ski. -- Zalewski. Garcia has been around

:21:04. > :21:12.a little longer. Tsenov of Bulgaria, just 21 years of age. He is the new

:21:13. > :21:19.Bulgarian record-holder. That stood for 45 years. So it is Tsenov next

:21:20. > :21:24.to James Wilkinson, of Leeds City. Based down in Loughborough. When

:21:25. > :21:31.Foster is next to me in the commentary box. It was good to see

:21:32. > :21:36.him attack it. He was on a record pace for the first three laps. He

:21:37. > :21:42.didn't have an option, the Kenyans were running, what do you do? He has

:21:43. > :21:49.taken a bit of confidence from that. I'm sure he has. He has been

:21:50. > :21:53.impressive this year. To run 8.2 to four the steeplechase. The fastest

:21:54. > :21:59.time by a British athlete for 20 years. He is really establishing

:22:00. > :22:03.himself. The steeplechase has been the poor relation of middle and long

:22:04. > :22:07.distance running in British athletics for a long time. He is

:22:08. > :22:13.showing that with application and hard work and regular commitment you

:22:14. > :22:16.can make progress. Obviously, the Kenyans put everybody else off

:22:17. > :22:22.because they are so good but there is usually only three of them.

:22:23. > :22:25.Sometimes they have for because they have a wild card. But James

:22:26. > :22:33.Wilkinson is running well and I think he will do well today. Just to

:22:34. > :22:45.clarify, it is the first five through. Watch for all those names I

:22:46. > :22:50.mentioned. One man I didn't mention, the German, he is still their best

:22:51. > :23:02.runner. He is towards the back. Happy just to hang back for these

:23:03. > :23:04.first few laps and just click off. The decathlon on long jump just

:23:05. > :23:27.continues. Chi Better on the board but there is

:23:28. > :23:37.still more to come. He is highly fancied to take gold. The under 23

:23:38. > :23:46.European champion. His first attempt was 7.25. Wonderful shots of what is

:23:47. > :23:50.a very good leg shoot. Looking to pull himself into the mark that his

:23:51. > :24:14.feet make. He is waiting for his mark. It is very good. Seven metres

:24:15. > :24:22.and 68. Martina Ratej, the Slovenia representative is way beyond

:24:23. > :24:35.qualifying. She has booked her place in the final. Way beyond 60 metres

:24:36. > :24:46.there. Joining Britain's Goldie Sayers. Well done. I am not going to

:24:47. > :24:56.ask any more stupid questions about the javelin. I will stick to what I

:24:57. > :25:01.know. In the dark blue at the back, is somebody who is going to be a

:25:02. > :25:10.danger, he has got good 1500 metres pace. Happy to let this early pace

:25:11. > :25:31.go. I am just wondering what shape he is in. Just keep an eye on him

:25:32. > :25:35.finishing quickly. Kowal.. The pace is not slow but it is not super

:25:36. > :25:45.quick. We will come back to Brendan in a second. Back to the javelin.

:25:46. > :25:54.One of the favourites, Linda Stahl from Germany. Ranking amongst the

:25:55. > :26:05.season's best. She should be very comfortable. Oh no, it is a foul.

:26:06. > :26:08.The right foot on the line. Minimum energy expenditure. That is what she

:26:09. > :26:21.would have been after but she will have to go again. 2.55 opening 1000

:26:22. > :26:24.metres. The whole field including James Wilkinson together. Coming

:26:25. > :26:30.down the barrier in the home straight. They will see the lap

:26:31. > :26:34.scorer. Now it is time to get serious. There are too many

:26:35. > :26:39.therefore James Wilkinson to be comfortable. He has competed well

:26:40. > :26:46.this year. He is beginning to put himself in a good place. Hurdling

:26:47. > :26:54.well. He needs to be a little bit further up. He had a strenuous race

:26:55. > :26:57.at the Commonwealth Games. Sometimes athletes can respond to a

:26:58. > :27:08.championship like the Commonwealth Games, like James did, but sometimes

:27:09. > :27:26.they suffer for it. Kowal coming up on the far side. Nasti in front, I

:27:27. > :27:35.am sure he isn't. Lundgren of Sweden on the inside. Wilkinson has put

:27:36. > :27:39.himself in a good position all the way. He gives himself a site of the

:27:40. > :27:46.barriers and he knows with two laps to go when the kick-start starts to

:27:47. > :27:52.go, he has every opportunity to follow with the kick. But there are

:27:53. > :27:58.too many therefore comfort. Because these athletes don't get the chance

:27:59. > :28:03.to race on the circuit with fellow athletes, they are not going to know

:28:04. > :28:09.about the sprint finish. They will see them occasionally on the Diamond

:28:10. > :28:14.league circuit. But often they cannot get on the Diamond league

:28:15. > :28:17.circuit. It is one of the weaknesses of European athletics. James

:28:18. > :28:21.Wilkinson needs to be careful. He is moving into a good place and will

:28:22. > :28:31.have to battle hard to keep that place. When you get in that

:28:32. > :28:41.position. Nasti is going back through the field. The Russian has

:28:42. > :28:50.made a big move. Zalewski the big poll is in the front. Wilkinson is

:28:51. > :29:02.fifth at them well. The German is one to watch. James Wilkinson has

:29:03. > :29:06.got to be careful. He counted the athletes in front of him. He

:29:07. > :29:11.realised, there is too many. There are four ahead of him. He will have

:29:12. > :29:21.to work hard down the back straight. Kowal is looking good. Zalewski also

:29:22. > :29:32.looking good. Just had a bit of a coming together with the German.

:29:33. > :29:35.Head down for Zalewski at the front. James Wilkinson is struggling. He

:29:36. > :29:42.needs to keep going because there are fastest losers spots. He does

:29:43. > :29:49.not have the pace of these guys. Garcia has done that before!

:29:50. > :29:54.Flattened out. He took the last barrier, not concentrating. He

:29:55. > :30:05.hasn't got up. I hope he hasn't done himself a real injury. His race has

:30:06. > :30:11.gone. Goodness me, in the European Championships he fell in 2012 at the

:30:12. > :30:18.last hurdle and then got up and finished. I hope he is OK there. He

:30:19. > :30:22.hit the ground flat. That was a terrible fall. He seems to be OK.

:30:23. > :30:39.What a shame he was in a qualifying position. There they go across the

:30:40. > :30:47.finishing line. Six of them through. Look at Garcia

:30:48. > :30:54.Garcia was in a good place. He looks as though he is hot but he does not

:30:55. > :31:05.look too bad to be honest. He must have winded himself. He went flat on

:31:06. > :31:11.his front. Let us see if we can have another look at this. There are.

:31:12. > :31:19.Coming round the bend towards the last water jump. James Wilkinson

:31:20. > :31:38.coming under pressure. Garcia is six at this point. Readers Garcia moving

:31:39. > :31:48.onto the outside. It was his trailing leg, just as he came into

:31:49. > :31:53.contention with the German. I wonder if he was distracted, I wonder if

:31:54. > :32:00.you looked across when you look to cross when they should have been

:32:01. > :32:04.keeping his eyes firmly ahead? We could see a different angle. That is

:32:05. > :32:12.James Wilkinson finishing. He hit his left knee and what a bang he

:32:13. > :32:16.came down with. The RUC James Wilkinson looking to the side, he

:32:17. > :32:26.sees the following athlete to does not help qualify. -- he sees the

:32:27. > :32:29.athlete who has fallen. What a fall that was, it was horrendous. He

:32:30. > :32:38.looks like he does not have too bad an injury. James Wilkinson, a very

:32:39. > :32:41.good performance in the Commonwealth Games in fifth place. You need to

:32:42. > :32:56.watch the next race as he James, hard work out there, you've

:32:57. > :33:01.not been 100%. I have had a cold since the Commonwealth Games. I

:33:02. > :33:15.thought I could be good for the heat. In the final I will be

:33:16. > :33:26.perfect. It is just a matter of getting there. I felt wrath on my

:33:27. > :33:38.chest was tight. I mean a lot of the right moves. -- I made a lot of the

:33:39. > :33:42.right abuse. I think I was seventh because the Spanish guy fell. I have

:33:43. > :34:09.got There are some decent athletes in

:34:10. > :34:20.this heat. There are no British athletes going here.

:34:21. > :34:48.Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad has been the man who has disrupted Kenyan

:34:49. > :34:52.dominance. He is the winner of the last two European Championships. If

:34:53. > :34:54.the controls the race like you should then I cannot see anybody

:34:55. > :34:58.beating him. We are looking should then I cannot see anybody

:34:59. > :35:05.beating him. We are at the clock because of James Wilkinson spine.

:35:06. > :35:16.8.39.78. It will be interesting to see how the set. You are very

:35:17. > :35:20.correct when you said disrupted the Kenyan domination. He gets in

:35:21. > :35:29.amongst them and tries to disrupt the tactics. He is a terrific

:35:30. > :35:36.athlete. He will try to win a European title at 1500 metres and

:35:37. > :35:41.also at the steeplechase. You cannot have a steeplechase without a Kenyan

:35:42. > :36:17.and the former Kenyan athlete is now representing Tuckey in the lead.

:36:18. > :36:24.Ashley Bryant looking for some support here. Can they improve on

:36:25. > :36:36.his opening attempt, 7.21? He may have done. He could be left wanting

:36:37. > :36:41.for more. He is watching a group of athletes jumping lifetime bests,

:36:42. > :36:49.personal bests, season 's breasts and extending the lead away from

:36:50. > :36:56.him. Unless he can get into his own personal bests he will be in the

:36:57. > :37:03.middle of the field. The Germans are flying. 7.39, it is an improvement.

:37:04. > :37:13.We saw the German fowl on the first floor. Has she given herself some

:37:14. > :37:25.space? It is enough to qualify. The yellow line is the automatic

:37:26. > :37:35.qualification. It looks as if she is beyond the automatic qualification.

:37:36. > :37:52.Last chance saloon for a Rico Freimuth. He is looking to improve

:37:53. > :38:04.on his best. He was the fastest in the 100 metres. 7.34 in the second

:38:05. > :38:11.round. Lead the way. Good technique, great possession, great

:38:12. > :38:32.hang time. It is an improvement of two centimetres. 7.36. There are a

:38:33. > :38:54.couple of strong Polish athletes in this round. You can see the tall

:38:55. > :38:59.figure in the blue vest. He is very much at ease. Sitting comfortably in

:39:00. > :39:04.the position he wants to be. He has got pregnant -- plenty of running in

:39:05. > :39:08.him. This race is quicker than the first one which is not good news for

:39:09. > :39:27.James Wilkinson. There are ten athletes in that group. They are

:39:28. > :39:43.strong out a little. They are being led by Tarik Langat Akdag. The

:39:44. > :39:52.Turkish athlete continuing to lead. Looking good and looking strong. The

:39:53. > :39:59.groups are splitting out. 8.39.9 is the qualifying time. There's a group

:40:00. > :40:06.of seven began beginning to separates itself. Mahiedine

:40:07. > :40:17.Mekhissi-Benabbad is at the back of accurate. -- is at the back of that

:40:18. > :40:27.group. Victor Garcia is a bit of a loss, he was the third quickest in

:40:28. > :40:38.Europe this season. There is a tall figure, just striding along.

:40:39. > :40:42.Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad is in about six police. He will begin to

:40:43. > :40:46.put the squeeze on, make a move with a couple of laps to go. He now moves

:40:47. > :40:53.into the automatic qualification places. He just moves through the

:40:54. > :41:01.field, kicks off one after the other. There are a four athletes

:41:02. > :41:07.ahead of him. He is in an automatic qualifying position. He is hurtling

:41:08. > :41:48.well and running well. He is saving himself. I am excited to see what he

:41:49. > :41:58.does in the 1500 metres. We were doing the arithmetic. We're looking

:41:59. > :42:03.at that athlete and thinking about James Wilkinson. It will because.

:42:04. > :42:09.They are stretching out a little bit as they kept bell. Down the back

:42:10. > :42:15.straight, positions are settling and are being sorted. It is now just a

:42:16. > :42:19.case of getting around. Do not compete to severely if you are in

:42:20. > :42:24.the first five. You do not want to happen what happened in the last

:42:25. > :42:29.round when Garcia was injured. This looks to be considerably quicker.

:42:30. > :42:39.The ninth position is the key one for James Wilkinson. Up at the

:42:40. > :42:47.front, looking for the first five qualifiers. The German and the

:42:48. > :42:58.Polish athletes have done their work. It is now a race against the

:42:59. > :43:05.clock. James Wilkinson sitting and watching. The two behind will be

:43:06. > :43:08.automatically through. The Finnish athlete finished strongly and I

:43:09. > :43:18.think he will knock out James Wilkinson. James Wilkinson will not

:43:19. > :43:23.move through to the final. Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad did what he had to

:43:24. > :43:24.do and he looks fresh. The group probably carry on and run the final

:43:25. > :43:48.now. -- he could probably carry on. Bitter disappointment that James

:43:49. > :43:54.Wilkinson did not make it through to the final of the steeplechase. There

:43:55. > :44:01.was better news when they saw Goldie Sayers in the first round of

:44:02. > :44:05.qualification for the javelin. It was not a throw that she was pleased

:44:06. > :44:10.about but its lead over the automatic qualification line. -- it

:44:11. > :44:16.sneak over. These printers will love that

:44:17. > :44:31.suffers. It is very quick. These printers will -- the sprinters

:44:32. > :44:35.will of that suffers. That'll was terrible but it is through. Job

:44:36. > :44:40.done. The final to come. They have to ask you about last night because

:44:41. > :44:47.you had to get the team captain speech. How was it? I think it went

:44:48. > :44:54.pretty well. I was pleased with it. I have some people say nice things

:44:55. > :45:11.afterwards. I had to switch off and go straight to bed. Switch off and

:45:12. > :45:19.get up for this morning. However tricky it is out there, you just

:45:20. > :45:24.have to go out there and deliver. It is extra energy and I have two

:45:25. > :45:27.conserve it is today. If you give an excellent speech and perform

:45:28. > :45:34.rubbish, it doesn't have the power. We wish you all the very best for

:45:35. > :45:42.the final. All the very best to Goldie Sayers,. What do you make of

:45:43. > :45:47.the Captain's role within athletics. Somebody like her would really

:45:48. > :45:53.relished the opportunity. To get into the mix and have her say. She

:45:54. > :45:57.has had a rocky road over the last couple of years. She has had her

:45:58. > :46:05.injuries. She will have given a rousing speech, full of passion and

:46:06. > :46:11.very matter of fact. She doesn't mince her words. She is honest. For

:46:12. > :46:15.me, it is just one of those things. They seem to be revolving it and

:46:16. > :46:23.changing it a lot. Which I don't get. It takes a lot of energy.

:46:24. > :46:28.Public speaking is one of the most stressful things. Your team-mates,

:46:29. > :46:34.marking you out of ten. It takes a bit of doing. To psych yourself

:46:35. > :46:39.before that takes adrenaline and energy and giving a speech in front

:46:40. > :46:42.of your team-mates. A lot of people will say that she is an

:46:43. > :46:47.inspirational figure but she will look back at the room and take

:46:48. > :46:51.inspiration from them as well. What she said is true, the best way to

:46:52. > :46:58.lead the team is by example out on the field. Qualification is never

:46:59. > :47:05.easy. It is difficult first thing in a morning. You struggled yourself.

:47:06. > :47:10.It was wonderful to see that she smiled. It is wonderful to see her

:47:11. > :47:19.smiling, I hope she can relax because she can launch one. Men's

:47:20. > :47:33.400 metres qualification coming up. Matthew Smith is involved but he

:47:34. > :47:41.does not go in this one. First we have the next heat of the 3000

:47:42. > :47:54.metres steeplechase men. Alloh of the qualifiers for Thursday.

:47:55. > :48:03.The overwhelming favourite goes through very easily. Zalewski, the

:48:04. > :48:12.Polish athlete looked very strong. All of these athletes going through.

:48:13. > :48:16.The Finnish athlete going through as fastest loser so James Wilkinson not

:48:17. > :48:24.making it. A pity for James Wilkinson. Early morning, latest

:48:25. > :48:34.morning, not suiting him today. Let's hope the 400 metres men are

:48:35. > :48:48.wider weight and ready to go. -- wide awake. The three British

:48:49. > :48:56.athletes. We look at Kevin Borlee, one of the twins. Five heats, the

:48:57. > :49:03.first four to go through and the four fastest losers to the

:49:04. > :49:09.semifinals tomorrow. Kevin Borlee is the best-known athlete here. Fifth

:49:10. > :49:15.at the Olympic Games. The champion of Europe back in 2010. Storming

:49:16. > :49:24.through to win ahead of his brother. 26 years of age now. The twins have

:49:25. > :49:30.been very dominant. If you are a big follower of athletics. The man who

:49:31. > :49:35.would have been the favourite, from the Czech Republic, he is not here

:49:36. > :49:47.so it leaves the way open for the British athletes and probably the

:49:48. > :49:56.brothers thinking of medals here. Qualifying first. The French athlete

:49:57. > :50:01.in Lane 2, I would expect him to go well here. He ran well in the

:50:02. > :50:26.European team championship, in the B race. He has started fast. Mame-Ibra

:50:27. > :50:38.Anne following Kevin Borlee down the home straight. Daniel lemma check,

:50:39. > :50:51.from Russia the other qualifier. -- Daniel Nemecek. He had picked up an

:50:52. > :50:57.elbow injury falling over. I wouldn't write him off. He is going

:50:58. > :51:06.to get better and quicker. No real surprises in that heat. Mame-Ibra

:51:07. > :51:14.Anne and Kevin Borlee the only top ten runners in that heat. Going

:51:15. > :51:27.through easily. A look at one of the best throws in qualifications. A

:51:28. > :51:39.young thrower. The German 21-year-old. She joins Linda Stahl.

:51:40. > :51:40.The Germans with very strong representatives across all throwing

:51:41. > :51:57.events in the European Championships. She has booked her

:51:58. > :52:04.place in the final. This is confirmation of the qualifiers. The

:52:05. > :52:13.big throwers have all got through. The Olympic champion in fifth place.

:52:14. > :52:26.Storl wrote also favoured to take the championship. -- Linda Stahl.

:52:27. > :52:40.Two events, pleaded of the ten in the decathlon. Kai Kaczmarek is in

:52:41. > :52:50.the lead. Bryant of Great Britain in 15th place.

:52:51. > :53:01.We have been reminiscing about women's javelin qualification. 1986.

:53:02. > :53:07.Fatima Whitbread broke the world record in qualification. I remember

:53:08. > :53:22.her coming into the warm up area. We were very nervous because there was

:53:23. > :53:30.a certain Petra Felk who could also launch it very far. We were worried

:53:31. > :53:35.that she might achieve the world record and not win the European

:53:36. > :53:40.Championship. But she did it with the second throw over. Can anyone

:53:41. > :53:51.ever remember another world record in qualifying? I remember Wilson

:53:52. > :53:59.doing it in doors after doing strides with me, so I am claiming

:54:00. > :54:06.responsibility. We are all excited about Matthew Hudson-Smith. He has

:54:07. > :54:12.had a meteoric rise to fame. He was brilliant at the trials but had that

:54:13. > :54:15.cool disqualification. Just amazing Championships at the Cuomo Wealth

:54:16. > :54:25.games. He was brilliant in the four x four. -- Commonwealth Games. He

:54:26. > :54:30.had the legs of all legs. He is so fresh. He has two coming to these

:54:31. > :54:38.championships and show what he is capable of. He is very innocent. It

:54:39. > :54:43.is all very new to him. He is very nervous but when he steps on the

:54:44. > :54:51.track, he was amazing. Such a mature runner for a young athlete. The

:54:52. > :54:56.exact words that came to my mind. A very mature performance. He didn't

:54:57. > :55:01.panic, he didn't accelerate. He just ran the race as a young man full of

:55:02. > :55:09.confidence. He knows exactly who is behind him. At that point, when he

:55:10. > :55:18.went through beyond the athlete from Trinidad, we were all saying, you

:55:19. > :55:24.have gone too soon. He handled this very well indeed. He knew that Chris

:55:25. > :55:32.Brown was going to come at him so he timed his lead very well. Thank you

:55:33. > :55:36.very much. He is a quality athlete and we are going to enjoy watching

:55:37. > :55:39.him for many years. He is not in this next heat. Back to the

:55:40. > :55:55.commentary team. Before we get to that, let's round

:55:56. > :56:02.up the result of the first heat. Kevin Borlee looking very good.

:56:03. > :56:11.Pavel Trenikhin just nodding through for that final spot. Now to the

:56:12. > :56:22.second heat. Jonathan Borlee goes in this one. No British involvement.

:56:23. > :56:29.Richard Morrissey goes for Ireland. There has been a bit of disharmony

:56:30. > :56:37.in the Belgian camp. Lee-Marvin Bonevacia goes for the Netherlands.

:56:38. > :56:43.That is Richard Morrissey, a finalist at the European under 23

:56:44. > :56:51.championships last year. That is Jonathan Borlee. He has a slightly

:56:52. > :57:00.slower time this year than Kevin. Their younger brother Dylan has not

:57:01. > :57:09.made the four x 400 squad. It has not gone down well with the family.

:57:10. > :57:16.He has often stepped in in the past to augment the squad. Jonathan and

:57:17. > :57:27.Kevin are a cut above their sibling. We will see what Jonathan Borlee can

:57:28. > :57:35.do here. Maksim Dyldin of Russia goes in Lane 4. Jonathan Borlee in

:57:36. > :57:45.Lane 8. The first four go through automatically. Jonathan Borlee of

:57:46. > :57:51.the twins running blind out in Lane 8 but he will run his own race and

:57:52. > :58:00.should be too strong for many of the athletes here. He looks perfectly at

:58:01. > :58:08.ease. Marek Niit of Estonia is going well. Four go through automatically

:58:09. > :58:14.to the semifinal tomorrow. It is even around the bend. Jonathan

:58:15. > :58:19.Borlee has a little bit of work to do. This is a bit of a race for the

:58:20. > :58:24.automatic places. Jonathan Borlee is struggling a little bit. He will

:58:25. > :58:44.only get there in fourth place. It was won by Maxime building, --

:58:45. > :58:50.Maksim Dyldin, the Russian. I think he went out to easily. Marek Niit

:58:51. > :58:56.went out so hard. It has been a good year for the Russian. Hasn't been

:58:57. > :59:03.running very much at this year, but very strong coming through here.

:59:04. > :59:08.Marek Niit pulling of trees in the last 200 metres. Jonathan Borlee

:59:09. > :59:13.does not want to have to work that hard to finish in fourth. It wasn't

:59:14. > :59:21.good. He had to run right to the line. Just looking at the time by

:59:22. > :59:29.Maksim Dyldin. He looked fairly comfortable. Jonathan Borlee in

:59:30. > :59:52.fourth place behind Marek Niit, a national record for Estonia running

:59:53. > :59:58.well behind Lee-Marvin Bonevacia. This is a. -- this is her second

:59:59. > :00:34.attempt. final comfortably. Good clayton's at

:00:35. > :00:47.4.45 metres. -- good reasons. It was not necessary that the bar went to

:00:48. > :00:59.the automatic qualification at 4.50. 4.45 was in. No Brits present.

:01:00. > :01:07.The next three seats in the 400 metres all feature British people.

:01:08. > :01:14.In the next one is Conrad Williams. He is a quality athlete.

:01:15. > :01:21.He has got eight relay medals under his belt with the last one being in

:01:22. > :01:26.Glasgow. It is time that he launched himself and got into the major

:01:27. > :01:33.finals. He is a quality runner. He is like Phil Brown many years ago.

:01:34. > :01:35.He would do well in the relays but does not deliver the magical

:01:36. > :01:41.performances in the individual events. I am hoping that this could

:01:42. > :01:46.be his Championships. I think that this 400 metres competition is wide

:01:47. > :01:55.open. I could not state who will win this title. It will be a free for

:01:56. > :01:59.all. It must be frustrating for an athlete to know that they have got

:02:00. > :02:04.the time in their legs but when the gun goes, you cannot quite bring it

:02:05. > :02:08.out. I do not know how that translates to 400 metres. The more

:02:09. > :02:14.worried about it you are and the more you go over it in your mind, it

:02:15. > :02:21.becomes a bigger banner -- barrier and your body tenses up. It is sport

:02:22. > :02:25.psychology. I think so. It is down to the athlete and to the coach to

:02:26. > :02:31.look at what type of training they are doing. If you are doing the same

:02:32. > :02:36.things over and over, it is going to translate into the performances on

:02:37. > :02:38.the track. He is 32 now. He has got a big heart and a good attitude. Let

:02:39. > :02:50.us hope for the best. It is interesting to see how he will

:02:51. > :02:57.go. There are some known names in here. Ricardo Dos Santos is just 19.

:02:58. > :03:14.The Turkish athlete is just 18. When you have got young, developing

:03:15. > :03:28.athletes, you are never sure what will he will get. Julien Watrin has

:03:29. > :03:35.got a new personal best first year. The Italian is 21 years of age.

:03:36. > :03:47.People will come here, first time in a big Championships. At the other

:03:48. > :04:03.end of the spectrum, Conrad Williams, 32 now. When you see his

:04:04. > :04:14.times, he should be OK. The same with Yannick Fonsat. 45.11 for the

:04:15. > :04:20.Polish athlete. 24 years of age. He has made a big jump forward. You

:04:21. > :04:26.would not want to argue with him, would you?

:04:27. > :04:36.Watch out for Dos Santos. The young Portuguese athlete in lane two. The

:04:37. > :04:41.first four. Conrad Williams in lane seven. He will be pleased that

:04:42. > :04:49.Yannick Fonsat is outside him. It will give him something to run at.

:04:50. > :04:57.Yannick Fonsat and Conrad Williams in lane eight and seven. Started

:04:58. > :05:05.quickly. Conrad Williams has ran a good 200 metres. He needs to stay

:05:06. > :05:10.strong. The Polish athlete will be good in the home straight. Dos

:05:11. > :05:20.Santos of Portugal is also going well in lane two. Yannick Fonsat of

:05:21. > :05:26.France's got a lot of work to do. Conrad Williams in amongst the needs

:05:27. > :05:31.to stay strong in the home straight. The Polish athlete looking around.

:05:32. > :05:37.Yannick Fonsat finishes just well enough to get through. Well done

:05:38. > :05:42.Conrad Williams. Got a strong, got into a good position. The Polish

:05:43. > :05:47.athlete will be a threat. The Conrad Williams it was all about getting

:05:48. > :05:53.free without problems. He was able to relax over the last 50 metres. It

:05:54. > :06:00.is a very strong Polish team. Polish athletics is really coming on. Look

:06:01. > :06:08.at Conrad Williams, he judged it very well. Yannick Fonsat left it

:06:09. > :06:14.late. Ricardo Dos Santos in second place. You will see the effort being

:06:15. > :06:20.put in by Yannick Fonsat outside him. You want to lead a little bit

:06:21. > :06:25.in the tank but you are thinking about your time for the lanes for

:06:26. > :06:33.the semifinal. You do not want to take it too easy and being ran out

:06:34. > :06:38.of the top four. Decent run from Conrad Williams to make his way

:06:39. > :06:43.through in the automatic qualifying places. Also very impressive from

:06:44. > :06:44.the Polish athlete. Ricardo Dos Santos going through and Yannick

:06:45. > :06:55.Fonsat as well. Breaking world records in heat and

:06:56. > :07:09.qualification, there was a world record in the heats of the 400

:07:10. > :07:10.metres. This was in Jamaica in 1948. We talked about Matthew

:07:11. > :07:37.Hudson-Smith, let us hear from him. First year of 400 metres made me do

:07:38. > :07:43.the last leg. I asked them if I was sure -- if they were sure. I am only

:07:44. > :07:50.19. It kind of worked. I was happy that I was able to get a gold for

:07:51. > :07:59.everybody in the team, not just me. They all looked after me in the

:08:00. > :08:08.village. They were all around me trying to encourage me. It will not

:08:09. > :08:12.be like this in the individual event because it is all for one. I think I

:08:13. > :08:23.can look after myself. We think he can look after himself too. It was

:08:24. > :08:30.right to riches. From 48 seconds to 44.97. He stuck up upon everybody on

:08:31. > :08:39.outside lane. He glided past everybody in the field. He shot

:08:40. > :08:43.himself. -- he surprised himself. He backed it up and surprise himself

:08:44. > :08:52.again. We can look at him being a quality athlete full stop --. Would

:08:53. > :08:58.you call him a favourite given his lack of experience? You always have

:08:59. > :09:03.to wait and see. That is why we come to the stadium to watch the events.

:09:04. > :09:08.You have to see what happens in the final. He is one of the favourites

:09:09. > :09:14.and he is in form. This is the first season he has attacked the 400

:09:15. > :09:18.metres. He has been on a slow path focusing on 100 metres and 200

:09:19. > :09:28.metres with a plan to move up. I know Tony Hadley very well. He is a

:09:29. > :09:32.long-standing coach. When Matthew walked through the door, I am sure

:09:33. > :09:44.he said that he had a gem and he would have to protect them. His

:09:45. > :09:49.innocence might pay off. -- have to protect him. It could be somebody

:09:50. > :09:56.like Rooney who has been there and done it that challenges him the

:09:57. > :10:04.most. COMMENTATOR: fascinating to see how he gets on. Is that

:10:05. > :10:08.expectation of success. It is the slightly baffling disbelief that he

:10:09. > :10:10.is doing what he is doing. He is smiling and excited but he does not

:10:11. > :10:19.know how or why he is I do not know if you can cover in

:10:20. > :10:25.the favourites because of his inexperience. But he could be.

:10:26. > :10:36.Donald Sanford, the American now runs for Israel. Baker's Brian

:10:37. > :10:42.Gregan, the Irish Champion. Sixth in the last European Championships. And

:10:43. > :11:02.there is Can of turkey. They will handle Carol bold Uche

:11:03. > :11:15.Nwofor were inside. We did not see them. -- Carol bold Uche Nwofor.

:11:16. > :11:28.It is very interesting to see how this 19-year-old runs the very

:11:29. > :11:29.experienced Swede. How we -- how will the pace it and judge it? What

:11:30. > :11:50.can you do? Away they go. Donald Sanford a

:11:51. > :11:57.decent athlete outside him. He is moving away from Hudson-Smith. The

:11:58. > :12:01.Swede is making a move. Hudson-Smith will be expecting to be something in

:12:02. > :12:06.a tank and come through strongly in the second half of the race. He has

:12:07. > :12:10.left the bit to do. Also going strongly is Brian Gregan.

:12:11. > :12:19.Hudson-Smith is making a bit of a move. Hudson-Smith is looking

:12:20. > :12:24.comfortable and four go through automatically. It is a good race.

:12:25. > :12:31.Hudson-Smith putting the squeeze on to take the win. Brian Gregan coming

:12:32. > :12:41.through and taking third place. And here comes the athlete from

:12:42. > :12:48.Gibraltar. Matthew Hudson-Smith, I think he judged that well, Steve? He

:12:49. > :12:52.did not panic. He saw Donald Sanford going away from him. He had the

:12:53. > :12:59.Swedish man inside him that is not running as well. He could have

:13:00. > :13:03.panicked. You can fuel the man on the inside catching you and the man

:13:04. > :13:13.outside you is going away. -- you can feel. He has got that peacock

:13:14. > :13:18.style, his chest is out. When he comes into the home straight, he is

:13:19. > :13:24.strong. When he came round a top end, he knew he had to get moving.

:13:25. > :13:28.He ran this part of the race well. You come in to the home straight and

:13:29. > :13:34.can assess where you are. There are a couple of people around and pushes

:13:35. > :13:38.on. He gets his chest out in front. He decides he might as well when

:13:39. > :13:44.this now. I think it was a very good performance. He is still young and

:13:45. > :13:49.still developing. Still finding his feet. He got disqualified at the

:13:50. > :13:54.British Championships. He is probably nervous and are believed to

:13:55. > :14:05.get that out of the way. He wins that slower than the three previous

:14:06. > :14:15.kids. He probably needs a little bit more injection of pace. They leaned

:14:16. > :14:18.across take place tomorrow. Hudson-Smith with the victory.

:14:19. > :14:56.Confirmation of that time. Just north of 46 seconds. The time

:14:57. > :15:02.irrelevant. For him to control the race so well, that was the most

:15:03. > :15:07.important thing. When he accelerated, I don't think that

:15:08. > :15:16.people realised that he put his foot down. If you can glide past people

:15:17. > :15:21.like that, it is a perfect thing to have in your tool bag. He is with

:15:22. > :15:25.Phil now. Considering you are new to the event, you took that in your

:15:26. > :15:31.stride and qualified with ease. It was a bit easy but it was not the

:15:32. > :15:38.way I wanted to run it. I left it a bit late. There is a lot more in

:15:39. > :15:44.there but getting through the round is the main thing. What was the

:15:45. > :15:53.plan? I didn't really have one. I just what of a little bit too slow.

:15:54. > :16:03.I am not happy with that. 46.0, bit easy. You were strong in the final

:16:04. > :16:12.finish. Savage winters. But I am happy. Thank you very much. A little

:16:13. > :16:19.bit overwhelmed by the experience but he still won his heat. You know

:16:20. > :16:28.what I really love about him. I just want to cuddle him. Maternal

:16:29. > :16:34.instinct. Maybe. At 19, you do not want athletes to have all the

:16:35. > :16:41.answers. He is new to the spot, new to the event. He said that he made

:16:42. > :16:48.mistakes. We have heard Michael Johnson say that you have to go out

:16:49. > :16:56.hard for the first 200, assess it and then leave some in the tank. He

:16:57. > :17:00.did it all the wrong way round. But he can rectify that and he is still

:17:01. > :17:05.learning. Final heat, Martyn Rooney in this one. At the Commonwealth

:17:06. > :17:10.Games, we spoke about some people who didn't quite manage to perform.

:17:11. > :17:18.It was a bit of a shock for him to be out of the medals. We will see

:17:19. > :17:25.how he can respond. Over to Steve Cram.

:17:26. > :17:32.He watched the guys win the medal in the four x 400 metres after deciding

:17:33. > :17:36.not to be in it, so he could not joining the celebrations. He needs

:17:37. > :17:43.to find something to celebrate himself. He has not got the easiest

:17:44. > :18:11.of heats. Of guys he will know very well. Garcia is one of them. Nick

:18:12. > :18:15.Ekelund-Arenander of Denmark is another. Whenever Rooney is in Lane

:18:16. > :18:25.8, you worry that he will go off a bit easy but the sort of form he is

:18:26. > :18:44.in, he will be all right. Kamghe Gaba of Germany. Milos Raovic has

:18:45. > :18:51.run well this year. We have the former junior champion and junior

:18:52. > :18:58.competitor in the decathlon running the individual here. He is in Lane

:18:59. > :19:08.4. The top four to go through, this is the final heat. Rooney just needs

:19:09. > :19:14.to get out through the first 200 metres comfortably and assess where

:19:15. > :19:21.he is at. Lorenzo Valentini of Italy is one of the slowest in the field.

:19:22. > :19:31.Garcia of Spain moving nicely. Milos Raovic of Serbia has started hard.

:19:32. > :19:36.Kamghe Gaba on the inside. We will watch the stagger on wind into the

:19:37. > :19:43.home straight and he still has work to do. He has a three metre lead on

:19:44. > :19:48.the field. Garcia in second. Kamghe Gaba coming through on the far

:19:49. > :19:55.side. That is a really good run. Even looking across at the camera.

:19:56. > :19:59.That was as impressive as anyone. He could not afford to take too many

:20:00. > :20:04.chances, had to take it out but it meant that he could kill a little

:20:05. > :20:28.over the last 50 metres. Mr Rooney is pretty good at doing that. 49.48

:20:29. > :20:38.his official time. -- 40 5.48. 45.48 a combination of being in Lane 8 and

:20:39. > :20:43.his last results meant he could not leave it too slow in the first 200.

:20:44. > :20:52.Now without a beard, perhaps that is a superstition from the Commonwealth

:20:53. > :20:57.Games. He knew he was with some decent athletes and couldn't go out

:20:58. > :21:04.gently. Giving a little look to the camera. He knew that he had done it

:21:05. > :21:12.and it is a quick time. Able to have a little glance outside and in. When

:21:13. > :21:20.he gets out quickly, as he didn't in the final of the 400 in Glasgow, he

:21:21. > :21:26.looks a very impressive run. He has a point to prove to himself after

:21:27. > :21:30.his relative failure at the Commonwealth Games, not returning

:21:31. > :21:34.with a medal and watching his team-mates winning the gold medal in

:21:35. > :21:44.the four x 400. But in this round, very impressive indeed. Is that

:21:45. > :22:12.fingers crossed? Whatever it was, he did very well indeed. Milos Raovic

:22:13. > :22:21.goes through as the fastest loser. I found my rhythm. Anyway, how are

:22:22. > :22:28.you? I am loving it here. And I am loving seeing performances like

:22:29. > :22:38.this. What you did in the Commonwealth Games coming through.

:22:39. > :22:44.The Commonwealth Games took something out of my legs, but I am

:22:45. > :22:48.fit and I am good. I am in good shape and hopefully I will do

:22:49. > :22:54.something decent. You must be excited about what is to come. I

:22:55. > :23:06.have no idea what the time was. I ran in my rhythm, 45.5 should be

:23:07. > :23:11.easy. I love that buzz. My rhythm. I was concerned about the guys coming

:23:12. > :23:17.back, they finished quite well. It was great to start my championship

:23:18. > :23:27.with a win. All the best. Thanks, Phil. Cheers. If he didn't know what

:23:28. > :23:33.time he ran, he might be pleased to know that he is the second fastest

:23:34. > :23:46.qualifier. Maksim Dyldin ran pretty hard and will be a threat. The young

:23:47. > :23:52.19-year-old from Portugal, I am not sure what more there is from him.

:23:53. > :23:56.Conrad Williams going through. Then those going through as fastest

:23:57. > :23:58.losers, including Richard Morrissey with a new personal best making it

:23:59. > :24:12.through to the semifinal. All our boys coming through but

:24:13. > :24:19.Martyn Rooney was the most impressive. Definitely. He sounded a

:24:20. > :24:24.little bit more comfortable with his own performance. He is keeping a

:24:25. > :24:28.wise head. Only looking forward to the semifinal. I think he has got a

:24:29. > :24:36.cracking chance. I think he fancies it. Absolutely. Listen to the things

:24:37. > :24:41.he isn't saying. He is very confident and very positive. I sat

:24:42. > :24:46.next to him on the plane coming out here and his training has gone well,

:24:47. > :24:51.he has prepared well. Didn't get caught up in the whole Commonwealth

:24:52. > :24:58.thing. Just trained, prepared and is ready. Next up on track is the

:24:59. > :25:02.women's 100 metres hurdles qualification. A chance for Tiffany

:25:03. > :25:19.Porter. I thrive on competition. One special

:25:20. > :25:24.thing with the hurdles is that everybody is so good. It really

:25:25. > :25:30.makes you step up your game as an athlete and makes you not slack off

:25:31. > :25:36.in practice. If some of the other hurdlers are so good right now. I

:25:37. > :25:46.feed off that energy and it helps propel me in competition. Last year

:25:47. > :25:50.was very special for many reasons. Number one, a little bit of

:25:51. > :25:55.redemption from the disappointment I had at the Olympics in 2012. Then

:25:56. > :26:03.the fact that everybody has been running so well. They counted me out

:26:04. > :26:09.at the World Championships. The fact that I was able to come away with my

:26:10. > :26:14.first global outdoor medal, it was very special. I will never forget

:26:15. > :26:20.that moment. It filled with me a bit of confidence that I can compete

:26:21. > :26:27.with the rest in the world. Tiffany Porter of Great Britain with a first

:26:28. > :26:31.medal. I couldn't really dwell too much on how I did in door because I

:26:32. > :26:40.knew the Commonwealth was the next big one. To be honest, even though I

:26:41. > :26:44.got a silver medal and I was super thrilled by that I did not execute

:26:45. > :26:49.the best race I could have so I am looking to learn from that and put

:26:50. > :26:53.together a better race. I was really happy with my silver medal but I

:26:54. > :27:03.have more work to do here at the European Championship. Tiffany going

:27:04. > :27:10.in Heat 4. She has not run quite as well this year as she did last year

:27:11. > :27:16.when she got the bronze medal. She has had problems through the season

:27:17. > :27:21.but she keeps at it. She is always in contention. These championships

:27:22. > :27:26.are very important for her. She has an opportunity to win a title. She

:27:27. > :27:30.has always been the bridesmaid, there have been so many talented

:27:31. > :27:36.women around her but she is one of the women in the mix. She has a bit

:27:37. > :27:43.of a problem from Cindy from France who has been a bit more consistent

:27:44. > :27:53.than the Tiffany but she is a good race and she could pull this one

:27:54. > :27:59.off. A real opportunity, she just needs to up that level a little bit.

:28:00. > :28:04.It is the consistency we are looking for from her. She is a good

:28:05. > :28:10.competitor and she is going to need that. She has opposition. She is not

:28:11. > :28:15.coming in thinking she can coast it. She cannot. She has to work really

:28:16. > :28:21.well. She has made a difference to her training. She has hurdled a lot

:28:22. > :28:22.better in the latter part of her races. That will hold her in good

:28:23. > :28:59.stead because Billeaux is fantastic. First of a well-qualified and the

:29:00. > :29:24.four fastest losers. She has to put the paper fingers

:29:25. > :29:30.because she is allergic to the track. -- put the tape on her

:29:31. > :29:56.fingers. The big danger to Tiffany Porter is

:29:57. > :30:01.this lady. She ran the world indoor Championships and missed out on a

:30:02. > :30:08.medal. She is a good starter. Like Tiffany Porter, in that range were

:30:09. > :30:13.away from the European Championships, going towards the

:30:14. > :30:18.World Championships and Olympics, she can do very well. In the

:30:19. > :30:24.100-metre hurdles, anything can happen. She will want to negotiate

:30:25. > :31:13.her way through this comfortably. 12.76. There is a headwind. When you

:31:14. > :31:19.are watching Colin, there's no question that Tiffany Porter and the

:31:20. > :31:23.other athlete of the class acts. You want to get through without

:31:24. > :31:30.problems. She did that very nicely. She is the quality act in this race.

:31:31. > :31:35.Which she has demonstrated. Technically, she is very good. She

:31:36. > :31:44.runs off the barrier as well. She gets into that lovely sprinting

:31:45. > :31:47.pattern. If you can adjust your sprinting to take on the barriers

:31:48. > :31:57.then you are nearly heading towards perfection. Huddling from France's

:31:58. > :32:07.very strong at the moment. -- hurdling. We know all about the men,

:32:08. > :32:13.they are doing very well, they have got the world junior champion,

:32:14. > :32:44.France. At the moment the powerhouse of sprint hurdles.

:32:45. > :32:56.16.55 needed to get into the final. That looked very balanced. Good

:32:57. > :33:06.rhythm. He has a season 's best of 16.61. He might be challenging that.

:33:07. > :33:11.This is a good shot from the front. Very good indeed in terms of

:33:12. > :33:20.balance. Such a key component of triple jump. 16.52. Just short of

:33:21. > :33:24.automatic. Now the UK champion. Julian Reid. Looking to book a place

:33:25. > :33:42.in the triple jump final. 16.55 is needed. That did not look too bad at

:33:43. > :33:47.all. He looks as though he might have gone beyond automatic

:33:48. > :33:53.qualification. His personal best is five years old, 16.89. He cooks that

:33:54. > :34:08.helped his possession a little bit longer. Just waiting for that mark

:34:09. > :34:11.to be measured. -- he could have held his position. He is just a

:34:12. > :34:34.couple of centimetres shy. This is now the shot put for the

:34:35. > :34:43.decathlon. Kevin Mayer is a very competent shot putter. He is having

:34:44. > :34:48.a good morning. His lifetime best is below 50 metres. That might have

:34:49. > :34:56.been beyond that. He just managed to save it. You cannot touch that block

:34:57. > :35:21.at the end of the circle. He knows it is big. Kevin Mayer of France. It

:35:22. > :35:31.is big, lifetime best, 15.14. The German is in it is in fourth place

:35:32. > :35:36.overall. It looks like France versus Germany. Three Germans in

:35:37. > :35:41.contention. That is also big. It looked like it landed in the same

:35:42. > :35:46.hall as a French one. Just beyond 15 metres. It could be threatening his

:35:47. > :35:53.lifetime best. It looks as if it could go down to the wire. Europe

:35:54. > :36:03.has been traditionally strong in the past. These are some new talent

:36:04. > :36:10.coming through. It is our for a belly with a lifetime best. --

:36:11. > :36:22.aBELE. Coming up for the next heat for the

:36:23. > :36:35.women's 100 metres Hoddle. -- 100 metres hurdles. What do you make of

:36:36. > :36:38.that technique, Colin? It is probably somewhere in the Albert

:36:39. > :36:51.went to drama school this is currently getting a telling off. --

:36:52. > :37:03.probably someone in that costume. Not running in the second of four

:37:04. > :37:13.eats. Is it Denise Lewis that is inside that? We are talking about

:37:14. > :37:20.people that make fitting Tiffany Porter. The athletes and win one and

:37:21. > :37:26.in lane seven of the quickest in Europe so far. -- in lane one. It is

:37:27. > :37:46.the Belgian record-holder. The Russian champion goes in lane

:37:47. > :37:47.two but she has not raced outside of Russia the season so she is an

:37:48. > :38:56.unknown quantity. Three go through automatically. The

:38:57. > :39:01.Belgian showing higher class. You do not see her too much on the circuit

:39:02. > :39:05.but she is very competent. Let us look at her from the beginning. She

:39:06. > :39:13.goes gingerly into the first barrier. She is very tall and I

:39:14. > :39:19.think she prepares herself for the first barrier instead of going at

:39:20. > :39:23.it, being aggressive. When she gets into that beautiful, flowing action.

:39:24. > :39:38.The technique is nice and solid. It sees her through for the victory.

:39:39. > :39:49.Nelson Evora from Portugal, Olympic champion from 2008. Now 30 years of

:39:50. > :39:58.age. His first attempt. Wonderful technique as you would expect from

:39:59. > :40:05.the Olympic champion. 16.65 is actually automatic qualification so

:40:06. > :40:17.I correct myself from earlier. That is what is needed to advance to the

:40:18. > :40:22.final for the Portuguese champion. He is not happy with the with the

:40:23. > :40:27.forward rotation, either that or he needs to be quicker. He is one

:40:28. > :40:34.centimetre shy of qualification. It is the biggest distance we have seen

:40:35. > :40:39.this morning. Here is the oldest man any contradiction, but that sealed

:40:40. > :40:44.the natural, the defending champion. -- the oldest man in the

:40:45. > :40:49.competition, for Brits yield a natural.

:40:50. > :40:55.The veterans, with a bit of adrenaline, they know what they are

:40:56. > :41:05.doing, hairy experience. The natural is 16 times Italian champion. --

:41:06. > :41:19.Donato. Look at that, he is exactly on the

:41:20. > :41:34.same mark as Nelson Evora. Rumen Dimitrov of pokey area. -- of

:41:35. > :41:39.Bulgaria. That was a huge step. His hop loop control. He extended into

:41:40. > :41:45.the step and got out of it. If you go big in the first two sectors, you

:41:46. > :41:53.have to go big out of it. Very good on the board. He really extends

:41:54. > :42:00.through the step sector, the middle sector and he gets out into the jump

:42:01. > :42:09.sector. He is very aggressive. 16.62. It is the third best jump we

:42:10. > :42:27.have seen in qualifying. 17 centimetres ahead of Julian Reid.

:42:28. > :42:31.This is his second attempt. The look on his face tells the story. He was

:42:32. > :42:37.quite far behind the board and he knew it. He slightly aborted it. He

:42:38. > :42:43.did not look as committed as he might have done. He needs to get

:42:44. > :42:49.that right. We talk about the fast track, it affects the jumpers. They

:42:50. > :43:03.have to get the step marks correct. It has to be meticulously placed. No

:43:04. > :43:17.improvement for. -- no improvement for him. Rico Freimuth in the

:43:18. > :43:27.decathlon. You have to have quickly to have that checkmate. -- to have

:43:28. > :43:29.that technique. She is a 15-metre floor at his best. His feat not as

:43:30. > :44:14.good as it could've been. He likes that and it is big. He was

:44:15. > :44:19.wobbling around on his support lead. He steadied it. He was very open on

:44:20. > :44:30.the right side for a left-handed shot putter. He is up for it, isn't

:44:31. > :44:46.he? 16 metres. Another huge lifetime best. 15.39. Just to round up the

:44:47. > :44:59.second heat in the women's 100 metres hurdles. Quite a quick heat.

:45:00. > :45:28.We think Rosina Hodde might be OK. For spots available. Kondakova in

:45:29. > :45:40.Lane 1. Lisa your Hildebrand is having a very good season. We can

:45:41. > :46:00.see the Lithuanian on the outside. We mentioned Lisa your wreck on the

:46:01. > :46:05.outside. -- Urech, she was in a world-class league. But now coming

:46:06. > :46:17.back from injury. She was one of the best Swiss athletes in world terms.

:46:18. > :46:27.Hildebrand, Bakker, Urech, some pretty good athletes in here.

:46:28. > :46:35.Kondakova got a reasonable start in Lane 1. Urech, as well. Hildebrand

:46:36. > :46:45.coming away at the moment. She is going to go and win this one. She

:46:46. > :46:56.gets it ahead of Kondakova. We lost Koudelova. That wasn't bad at all.

:46:57. > :47:02.12.78. Her season has been very good so far. Pretty consistent. If any of

:47:03. > :47:11.the top to falter, the likes of Hildebrand will not be too far-away.

:47:12. > :47:16.The wind was zero so for hurdlers that was pretty perfect. Good solid

:47:17. > :47:23.tech week. She has been doing that all season and she has been rewarded

:47:24. > :47:28.with another swift time of 12.78. The athletes who are the most

:47:29. > :47:35.consistent and make the tiniest of mistakes tend to suffer big time.

:47:36. > :47:41.They are all quite fragile, these women and the hurdles are pretty

:47:42. > :47:46.heavy. They rely on good smooth technique and sprinting speed. If

:47:47. > :47:51.you marry that, then you get the ultimate performance. This is a good

:47:52. > :47:56.competitive field. Good, swift times. I am looking forward to

:47:57. > :47:59.seeing how they raise their game for the semifinal. Also, we have Tiffany

:48:00. > :48:13.Porter, let's see what she can produce. Tiffany coming up very

:48:14. > :48:27.shortly. Let's have a look back at heat number one. Billaud is still

:48:28. > :48:33.the favourite. She is the danger woman. Her hurdling technique is

:48:34. > :48:37.good and compact than she gets into her running action very quickly and

:48:38. > :48:44.from there she just holds. That is where Tiffany is going to really

:48:45. > :48:50.have to focus and rely on her technique Tiffany can get tight

:48:51. > :48:57.sometimes. This woman, for me, is pretty majestic. Pretty easy.

:48:58. > :49:01.Hearing Tiffany's interview, saying how excited she was to win the

:49:02. > :49:08.silver medal in Glasgow. Hopefully, that can be a bit of a springboard.

:49:09. > :49:14.She said she was happy with that but she also has a lot of unfinished

:49:15. > :49:17.business. Her first proper shot at a major European title. She wants to

:49:18. > :49:24.focus on that and she seems to be doing that. I actually don't know

:49:25. > :49:29.whether Tiffany was happy with that silver. She thought there was a

:49:30. > :49:33.chink of vulnerability in the Sally Pearson who had not had the best

:49:34. > :49:38.year up to them. I think she really could go on and win it. She could

:49:39. > :49:47.win this title if everything goes well. She has two hold well, which

:49:48. > :50:04.is where she has problems. Sally Pearson did raise her game in the

:50:05. > :50:12.final of the Commonwealth. Zagre finished very well. A young Belgian

:50:13. > :50:16.athlete. They have a young collection of athletes coming

:50:17. > :50:21.through, just as the Dutch have. And she looked really good. Another

:50:22. > :50:27.thing the athletes have an issue with is the speed of the track. We

:50:28. > :50:35.have seen a couple of personal bests in the 200 metres. Ashleigh Nelson

:50:36. > :50:42.and Desiree Henry. The women's hurdles have been running into a

:50:43. > :50:48.headwind. 1.54 Billaud's race. I think she was surprised at the time

:50:49. > :50:54.because it was pretty effortless. I expect the times to come down in the

:50:55. > :50:59.next race. A little bit of a disappointment in the menstrual jump

:51:00. > :51:04.so far. I don't know what has happened to that event. We have some

:51:05. > :51:08.very exciting events globally at the moment but she pulled jump does not

:51:09. > :51:15.seem to be one of them. We are looking at the shot put in the

:51:16. > :51:26.decathlon. Ashley Bryant going for this.

:51:27. > :51:39.Silver medal in Glasgow just over a week ago. He needs to get beyond the

:51:40. > :51:49.40 metre mark. No. That is below 14 metres. You can see clearly. On

:51:50. > :51:56.balance, just leaning a little. You see his eyes go down on release. He

:51:57. > :52:04.needs a big improvement. Talking about tired earlier. We are seeing

:52:05. > :52:10.it. So to the final track event of the first session. The final heat of

:52:11. > :52:16.the women's 100 metres hurdles. It is the event in which we see Tiffany

:52:17. > :52:22.Porter. Silver at the Commonwealth Games. Will gold follow in the

:52:23. > :52:46.European Championships? We have a couple of rounds to go. Three to go

:52:47. > :52:53.through automatically. Isabelle Pedersen of Norway is a former world

:52:54. > :53:03.youth champion. Schrott made the final in the Olympics are couple of

:53:04. > :53:14.years ago. Is a bearing is a talented heptathlete with her fan

:53:15. > :53:24.base. -- Zbaren. Pesiridou has a rather modest personal best. This is

:53:25. > :53:35.a very strong heptathlete as well. Bearings is a former European indoor

:53:36. > :53:45.champion. Neziri. And there is Tiffany Porter. The gauntlet has

:53:46. > :53:50.been set down by Billaud. Let's see what Tiffany Porter can do. It is

:53:51. > :53:53.not just about the time, it is about getting through safely because this

:53:54. > :54:12.event can hold a couple of dangers if you get it slightly wrong. Three

:54:13. > :54:14.to go through automatically plus the fourth fastest losers through the

:54:15. > :54:40.heats. Tiffany Porter a little bit slow out

:54:41. > :54:52.of the blocks. Here she comes now talking about a celebration there.

:54:53. > :54:57.12.69. Into a strong wind, as well. Two metres per second headwind. So

:54:58. > :55:03.that is a very quick time. She has laid down a marker. A good win for

:55:04. > :55:17.Tiffany Porter. I was looking where Tiffany could make-up a bit of

:55:18. > :55:27.ground. It is between hurdles number two and eight. That is where Cindy

:55:28. > :55:31.Billaud is very strong. She pushed into the next hurdle, driving into

:55:32. > :55:36.every single one of these barriers. If you are a young hurdler, that is

:55:37. > :55:41.exactly what you need to do. Come off your trailing leg and work hard

:55:42. > :55:46.into the next one. Then you end up with good performances like that.

:55:47. > :55:55.The start was a bit misleading because of bearings being a very

:55:56. > :56:03.quick starter. Never back off. Hard into it and keep the flow going.

:56:04. > :56:09.Into a -2 wind that is a very strong performance. I have to say, we

:56:10. > :56:15.cannot feel a breath of it but that is what they say. A good time by

:56:16. > :56:20.Tiffany Porter setting the quickest paste ahead of Billaud and

:56:21. > :56:24.Hildebrand. She will go through into the semifinals. That is tonight.

:56:25. > :56:29.Another chance to seep Tiffany Porter today. That is confirmation.

:56:30. > :56:38.A long way ahead. Let's hear from Tiffany Porter now. Tiffany is just

:56:39. > :56:43.discovering there was a two metre headwind. What a performance. It is

:56:44. > :56:47.pretty encouraging because it did feel pretty easy and hopefully I

:56:48. > :56:56.will get better every round. You have to do it again tonight. What do

:56:57. > :57:00.you do between then and now. Just relaxing and decompressing and

:57:01. > :57:04.forgetting about this round. Focusing on the task in hand which

:57:05. > :57:09.is the semifinal. Hopefully, it will go well. Do you know what kind of

:57:10. > :57:16.mindset you were in at the start today? I was rather relaxed. I am

:57:17. > :57:21.always most nervous before the first round so I am glad that is out of

:57:22. > :57:31.the way now. Well done. Thank you. Thanks, guys. So there we are. The

:57:32. > :57:35.trees are not moving at all but two metres a second headwind. It doesn't

:57:36. > :57:41.really matter. A good run from Tiffany Porter. Qualifies quickest.

:57:42. > :57:48.These are the qualifiers overall to go through to tonight's semifinal.

:57:49. > :57:53.Porter heading the way ahead of Billaud. A good run from Hildebrand

:57:54. > :58:19.as well. Bakker with a personal best. Lisa who qualifies as fastest

:58:20. > :58:25.runner up. Some brilliant hurdling from Tiffany Porter. She has Opto

:58:26. > :58:30.game. She is obviously peaking at just the right time. Her trailing

:58:31. > :58:37.leg, coming through was just devastating. Her speed is up to her

:58:38. > :58:41.best. Some terrific performances from British athletes today but one

:58:42. > :58:46.disappointment was Laura Muir not qualifying in the 1500 metres. Your

:58:47. > :58:57.heart went out to her. She did not do well in the Commonwealth Games.

:58:58. > :59:01.It is sad to see Laura looking a little bit lost right now. She needs

:59:02. > :59:05.to find herself mentally more than physically because she is in good

:59:06. > :59:10.shape. A quick look ahead to what we are going to see this evening. Jo

:59:11. > :59:16.Pavey in the final of the 10,000 metres. I am really looking forward

:59:17. > :59:20.to that race. She ran really well in the common wealth games. The way

:59:21. > :59:24.that she battled in the Commonwealth Games it was one of the best races

:59:25. > :59:29.for me. The way she was fighting to the last four that Bedell and she

:59:30. > :59:38.will be doing the same tonight. Thank you very much indeed. We are

:59:39. > :59:41.back at 4.45 this afternoon. Jo Pavey going for a medal in the

:59:42. > :59:52.10,000 metres. We will see you then.
